Chương 160: Shape Has to Score

The second wave did not arrive like the first. The first had been obvious. Balls in the air. U. A. as direction. Reflex and training meeting impact. The second wave was smarter. It waited until U. A. breathed. That was worse. Bakugo's first hit had landed cleanly, one target gone from a Ketsubutsu candidate who had expected him to chase and gotten angle instead. Ren's deflection had opened the window. Jiro's sound call had kept the left lane from folding.
Todoroki's ice lip had cut the first high arc without becoming a wall. Sero's tape had made retreat a route instead of panic. One breath. Shape held. Then the field punished them for thinking a breath was time.
"Movement left" Jiro called Her earjack pulled free from the wall as she pivoted, because staying plugged in too long would make her stationary in the wrong way.
"Multiple groups. not one wave" Yaoyorozu's hand lifted.
"Do not clump" Iida followed immediately.
"Left alley partial pressure. right elevated pressure. center open but exposed" Kaminari's voice stayed low.
"Center looks too open""Agreed" Yaoyorozu said "No center collapse" Bakugo grinned toward the right.
"They are waiting for us to turtle" Kirishima's shoulders loaded. Then stopped.
"No wall unless assigned""Good" Bakugo snapped without looking at him A low rumble passed through the ground. Not loud. Enough. Ren felt it through the chair frame before the sound reached his ears. The front wheel alignment tugged left. The chair corrected, but the floor had not moved like impact. It had moved like the field itself had been told to disagree. Shindo. The name came with a fragment and a smile that was too warm. Ren did not say the name. Not useful yet. He said "Ground vibration.
left source possible. chair stable. adjust routes" Midoriya's eyes sharpened.
"Status before movement. left source?" A student from Ketsubutsu stepped into view near a broken wall, smile bright, posture loose, hands raised like a friend who had arrived late to a party. Yo Shindo.
"U. A.! Looks like everyone decided to start with you. Rough luck" Bakugo's grin turned sharp.
"Fake" Shindo laughed.
"No, really. We should coordinate before the field becomes a mess" Kaminari whispered "He sounds like a helpful trap" Jiro said "That is because he is one" Shindo's smile did not move. His fingers touched the ground. The next vibration hit harder. Not enough to injure. Enough to turn stable stance into question. Kirishima widened his feet. Iida's route line shifted. Uraraka grabbed a slab before it tipped. Ren's chair rocked once. Not danger. Not yet. He gripped the control and did not overcorrect. Map. Field.
vibration. chair stable. left wrist quiet. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. targets intact? check. A ball came low through the tremor, not at his body. At the chair-back target. Ren moved forward half a meter. Not enough. The ball clipped the edge of the chair-back target. The target flashed. One lost. A clean hit. Not wheel. Not unsafe. Target. Ren breathed.
"Chair-back lost. one lost. not finished. map present" No one turned into wall. Good. Bakugo blasted past the line of the vibration, not toward Shindo, but toward the Ketsubutsu candidate who had thrown through it. His ball hit concrete where the candidate had already moved. Miss. Information.
"Fast left" Bakugo called Kurose's voice was not in the field. Aizawa's board was not in the field. Still, the sentence lived in them. A miss can be information. Bakugo grinned.
"Again" Yaoyorozu called "Scoring lanes now. surviving is not passing" There it was. The first true problem. U. A. could hold shape and still fail if it became only a shield. One hundred slots. Six balls. Two eliminations needed. Being hunted created openings, but only if they took them. Sero shot tape to the right and anchored to an elevated rail.
"Route line" Mina slid under a ball that clipped the air where her shoulder had been and flicked acid low, not to attack a candidate, but to make a floor zone they would not step through.
"Left lane ugly""Good ugly" Kaminari said softly Jiro called "Three closing from left. two from upper. Shindo still smiling""Stop commenting on his face" Bakugo snapped"It is tactical face""It is fake face" Shindo's voice floated from the broken wall.
"Harsh" Bakugo did not answer. Good. Shinso did not either. Better. Several candidates had already decided not to answer anything from him. That was visible in the way they looked at his mouth and then away, like silence could make him disappear. Silence does not mean absent. Shinso moved. Not toward them. Across them. His scarf snapped around a broken signpost, pulled him sideways, and changed the angle of the entire middle-rear line.
A ball thrown at his chest target passed through the space he had occupied and struck the wall behind him. He threw low at the candidate's ankle line. Not to hit. To make them lift a foot. They did. Jiro's ball took their side target.
"Jiro hit. Shinso window" Yaoyorozu called Shinso said "No power. movement window" The candidate swore and retreated. Good. No power did not mean no threat. Ren watched the left lane collapse by two degrees. Not enough for a warning from everyone else. Enough if you were sitting lower, seeing knees, wheels, gaps, foot pressure, and the strange honesty of people who forgot their stance was public.
"Kaminari. low rebound left wall. candidate with blue stripe overcommits after vibration" Kaminari swallowed.
"Left wall. low rebound" He threw. His first ball hit the wall too early. Miss. But the blue-striped candidate reacted exactly as Ren had seen. Sero's ball caught their lower target during the dodge.
"Sero point. Ren read. Kaminari miss opened movement" Yaoyorozu called Kaminari blinked.
"My miss counted?" Ren said "Information" Kaminari looked almost too happy. Jiro said "Do not celebrate. next""Right. next" Another rumble ran through the ground. This one came from a different angle. Shindo was moving. Or someone else was copying pressure. The field did not care. Midoriya moved to support Uraraka when a cluster turned toward her, then stopped one step before overcommitting.
"Status. Uraraka?"
"Stable. two closing. I can float debris""Support from angle" He did not rush into the center. He threw from where he was. The ball struck a piece of floating debris Uraraka had lifted and redirected into a Ketsubutsu candidate's shoulder target. Hit. Stolen story; please report.
"Midoriya point. Uraraka window" Yaoyorozu called Midoriya breathed. Not too much. Good. Then the first announcement sounded overhead.
"Ten candidates have qualified" The field changed again. A number became pressure. Kaminari's voice almost rose. He lowered it.
"Ten already. not us""Field condition" Iida said"Not verdict" Uraraka added Bakugo's grin was all teeth.
"Then score faster" Aizawa watched from the observation area with his arms folded so tightly his scarf seemed calmer than he was. Beside him, Kurose had a clipboard she was not allowed to throw. Recovery Girl sat near the medical observation feed with Ren's private medical status available only to authorized staff. The monitor showed stress, not collapse. Good. She did not relax. Mizushima stood beside the H. U. C. evaluators observing from the second-stage staff area, even though her part had not begun.
"They are holding shape" she said Kurose's eyes stayed on the field.
"They can hold shape and still fail" Aizawa said "They know" On the screen, Yaoyorozu called scoring lanes. Kurose's shoulders lowered one centimeter.
"Good" Recovery Girl tapped the Ren feed with one finger.
"One target lost. no compensation behavior yet""Yet" Aizawa said"Correct" Back in the field, Ketsubutsu stopped pretending to be friendly. That was almost a relief. Shindo's next vibration came under the central lane just as three other candidates angled balls from high cover. The tremor broke footwork, not buildings. Designed for students. Designed for openings. Todoroki's ice started small. Then failed. The vibration split the lip before it formed a useful barrier. Proportion first.
If proportion fails, name escalation.
"Small ice failed. wider ridge. no wall" He placed a broader ridge across the floor, angled, not blocking the field but ruining the timing of the incoming throws. Two balls hit the ridge. One skipped high. Asui's tongue snapped out, redirecting it toward open space.
"Thanks""Ribbit. high risk" The third ball came through. Toward Yaoyorozu's chest target. Iida moved. Not in front. Across. He struck the ball with his own and sent it spinning wide.
"Route support. Yaoyorozu open" Yaoyorozu used the opening instead of thanking him. She created a short baton-like tool, flicked it against a fallen sign, and sent her target ball ricocheting through a narrow gap. It clipped the blue-striped candidate's second target.
"Yaoyorozu hit. target has two lost" Jiro called"Finish window" Bakugo said He could take it. The candidate was left of his line. One blast and a throw. Easy enough. But Bakugo already had one target on another candidate. Chasing this one would break his angle and central draw. He stopped.
"Not mine" Kaminari blinked.
"What?" Bakugo yelled "Finish if in lane!" Sero was in lane. He threw. Hit. The blue-striped candidate's final target flashed. Eliminated. The field display above the sector updated. Candidate eliminated by Sero Hanta. Sero stared for half a heartbeat. Then moved.
"First elimination. not passed. need second""Good" Yaoyorozu called "No celebration" Kaminari whispered "No celebration but spiritually confetti" Jiro said "Private""Private confetti" Ren moved rear-left along the broken wall. One target lost. Two remaining. No brace. No monitor. Stage one. Inactive. Current map. A candidate from a smaller school saw the chair-back target already gone and decided Ren was half-finished. That was fair. It was also useful. They came in too direct. Ren did not retreat. He stopped.
Stationary looked done. The candidate threw toward his shoulder. Ren's hand moved a fraction. The chair shifted backward, not forward, just enough for the ball to graze cloth and miss target. He threw low. The candidate dodged. Expected. Ren's ball hit the curb and rebounded at ankle height toward their back target. They twisted to avoid it. Shinso's ball struck their chest target.
"Shinso hit. Ren forced twist" Jiro called The candidate looked at Shinso's mouth and then away. Shinso said "Still here" They did not answer. Fine. He did not need them to. A ball came from high right toward Shinso's shoulder target. He caught it with scarf but the movement pulled him half a step out of route. His own throw would be weak. Ren saw the angle.
"Sero. right tape lift" Sero snapped tape to a streetlamp.
"Lift" Shinso used the tape tension to pivot, released the caught ball downward, and struck the same candidate's side target through a narrow lane.
"Second hit on same candidate. Shinso point. Sero window. Ren call" Yaoyorozu said Shinso's throat stayed fine. No Quirk. Good. The candidate swore. Then made a mistake.
"Say something now, brainwashing guy!" The field seemed to inhale. Shinso stopped. Not frozen. Assessing. Active candidate exchange. They had addressed him directly. No civilian. no rescue. no refusal. no overtrust. Stage one. Release reminder disabled by current choice. He could ignore. Use scarf. Let the window pass. No power if words work. But this was not rescue. This was scoring. His Quirk was not forbidden because it frightened people. He looked at the candidate.
"Do you want the answer?" The candidate laughed.
"No" Brainwashing took. Clean. Immediate. Not triumphant.
"Hold target line" Shinso threw. His ball hit the candidate's final target. The target flashed.
"Eliminated" the field system announced locally Shinso said "Release" The candidate blinked. Stumbled back. Shinso reported out loud, because naming use reduced shadow even here.
"Quirk used. active candidate exchange. one hold command. released" Several candidates nearby backed away. Not all. Enough. Kaminari's face tried to become proud and worried and too many things. He forced it down. No face. Good. The overhead display updated. Candidate eliminated by Shinso Hitoshi. Shinso had one elimination. Not passed. One. He breathed. Throat fine. discomfort moderate. no regret. map present. Good. Bakugo's laugh cut through the lane.
"About time!" Shinso did not look at him.
"Scoring is not betrayal" Bakugo blasted past a column.
"Never said it was!"
"No. You implied it at volume" Kaminari whispered "Battlefield banter. healing" Jiro said "Do not narrate" The second announcement sounded.
"Twenty-five candidates have qualified" The number hit harder. Twenty-five. A quarter gone. Somewhere outside U. A., candidates were passing while U. A. was surviving the cost of being known. Surviving is not passing. Yaoyorozu changed the shape.
"Pair scoring. no full group defense. Iida and Jiro coordinate exits. Bakugo right strike. Todoroki center control. Midoriya and Uraraka left score. Shinso and Ren flexible lane. Kaminari and Mina disruption. Asui high support. Sero route and finish" Bakugo grinned.
"Finally""Do not chase" Yaoyorozu said"I know!"
"You like hearing it""I like ignoring it less now" Kirishima whispered "That counts" Bakugo pointed.
"Fight your own targets" Right strike became violence with boundaries. Bakugo and Kirishima pushed toward a group that had been trying to collapse U. A.' s right flank. Bakugo did not chase the loudest candidate. He cut through the angle the candidate expected him to abandon. Kirishima did not become wall. He announced support lane, took one ball on a hardened forearm away from his targets, and forced a second candidate to step into Bakugo's throw. Hit. Then another.
Bakugo had two targets on one candidate in under ten seconds. The candidate panicked and tried to run toward center. Bakugo could have chased straight. He did not.
"If they expect chase, I choose angle" Kirishima moved support lane. The candidate turned into the path Bakugo had made before they understood it existed. Third hit. Eliminated. Bakugo had one elimination. His grin sharpened.
"Next" A Ketsubutsu candidate tried to hit his back target during the moment after the elimination. Kirishima's shoulders loaded. No wall unless assigned. He did not block. He called "Back high!" Bakugo dropped low and blasted backward without turning fully. The ball missed. His own throw clipped the attacker's chest target.
"Bakugo point. Kirishima call" Iida shouted"Do not narrate me!"
"Operational clarity!"
"Annoying!" Left score moved differently. Midoriya and Uraraka refused the obvious route. Shindo's tremors kept making direct movement costly. Uraraka floated debris pieces low, not high, creating small moving cover. Midoriya used controlled bursts to reposition without launching himself into dramatic rescue-shape. A smiling Ketsubutsu candidate tried to bait him.
"Midoriya, right? You always jump in, do you not?" Midoriya's body knew that sentence. It almost obeyed. Then. Status before movement. He looked at the candidate's feet. Too balanced. Bait.
"Not without status" The candidate blinked. Uraraka's ball hit their shoulder target.
"Uraraka point. Midoriya held bait" Asui called from above Midoriya breathed. His right hand did not clench. Good. Then the ground trembled again. Harder. Shindo had moved closer. A crack ran through loose concrete, not a real break, a controlled disruption. Enough to split U. A.'s left lane from center. Midoriya looked toward him. Fragments in Ren's head flickered. Smiling. friendly. hand on ground. quake. split. U. A. scattered. Ren's jaw tightened. Not prophecy. Pattern.
"Left split coming. Shindo ground source. do not cross center break without route check" Yaoyorozu echoed "Left split. route check" Shindo's smile finally changed. Not gone. Interested.
"Sharp eyes" Ren did not answer. Operational only. Shindo's hand touched the ground again. The tremor hit. This time U. A. was ready enough not to be ready perfectly. Asui went high before the floor moved. Uraraka pulled one debris piece away from a collapsing footline. Midoriya shifted right instead of forward. Iida verified a route instead of amplifying instinctively. Kaminari's voice stayed low.
"Left split. no spark. route dirty" Jiro called "Two candidates using tremor as cover" Mina grinned.
"My kind of ugly" She slid acid in a curve along the broken line, not at people, but at the route they wanted to use. The candidates slowed. Sero's tape snapped low. One tripped sideways. Not injured. Off rhythm. Kaminari's throw hit their chest target. He stared.
"Hit. I hit. no spark" Jiro said "Next""Right" Ren saw the second candidate overcorrect away from Mina's acid and Sero's tape. Low lane. His throw would be blocked by a broken curb unless he moved. Moving forward would expose his shoulder. Stationary would lose the lane. A fix is not a script. He moved backward. The candidate expected forward or still. Not backward. Ren's ball skimmed the curb at a shallow angle and bounced up into their side target. Hit. His first direct point. Not assist. His. The target flashed.
For half a second, the world narrowed dangerously. Useful. Proof? Ren's wrist patch pulsed. Small gate flicker at the edge of the left wrist. He pressed two fingers.
"Proof" The word cut through his own body before it could become hunger. Uraraka heard. So did Shinso. So did Bakugo somehow, because Bakugo was unfairly tuned to ugly words. Ren continued "Reducing role. one direct hit. no chase. map present" Recovery Girl in the observation room sat forward.
"Good" Kurose's pen stopped pressing so hard. Aizawa's eyes did not leave the field.
"Good" In the field, Bakugo shouted "You scored. so stop making it weird" Ren exhaled.
"Working on it" Shinso moved closer by half a lane. Not shield. Line of communication.
"Direct hit is data" Ren nodded.
"Annoying line""Unfortunately yours now""Denied""Logged" The third announcement sounded.
"Forty candidates have qualified" Forty. The field accelerated. Candidates who had been patient became greedy. Candidates with one elimination began hunting for second finishes. Candidates with damaged targets became desperate. Smaller schools tried to pick off weakened students. Shiketsu began moving in shapes that looked less like groups and more like weather systems. Inasa was visible for three seconds on a far street.
Wind curled around him and sent a cluster of target balls spiraling into candidates who had thought distance made them safe. Three targets flashed across two opponents. He moved like a storm with manners. Todoroki saw. So did Shishikura, who moved in another lane with precise, unsettling control, punishing candidates who overextended with captured shapes and rigid judgment. Todoroki's left hand cooled.
"My field. not his" Yaoyorozu said "Center pressure. your tool?"
"Proportion. narrow lane freeze" He made ice low across the center, a channel rather than a wall, forcing candidates into two lines. Jiro called the right line. Iida called the left. Todoroki did not watch Inasa again. Good. Then a candidate from Seiai tried to isolate Yaoyorozu with a binding Quirk that spread ribbon-like from her sleeves. She had watched U. A. organize and chosen the center. Good target. Bad for U. A. Yaoyorozu raised a shield. Too central. Script risk. She saw it.
"Second caller" Iida answered "Taking routes" Jiro said "Positions on me" Yaoyorozu dropped the shield angle, created three small discs instead, and threw one to cut the ribbon's path, one to open a lane for Mina, one to redirect her own target ball. Mina's acid made the ribbon-user step back. Yaoyorozu's ball hit chest target. Jiro's ball followed through the opened angle. Second hit.
"Finish?" Kaminari asked Yaoyorozu looked. Her lane was blocked.
"Not mine" Asui dropped from above. Hit. Eliminated. Candidate eliminated by Asui Tsuyu. Asui had one elimination. Yaoyorozu had no elimination but multiple points. That mattered. Scoring was not always personal. Passing was. The system did not care about emotional fairness. The students had to care about strategy anyway.
"Fifty-five candidates have qualified" Kaminari made a small strangled sound.
"More than half" Jiro said "Voice" He lowered it.
"More than half. voice low. map present" Bakugo had one elimination and two targets on a second candidate. He knew it. Everyone near him knew it. The second candidate knew it most. They tried to lure him into a narrow alley where three teammates waited with balls ready. Old Bakugo would have gone in. Maybe. This Bakugo smiled.
"Bad math" He blasted the alley entrance, not the candidate, throwing dust and air pressure across the waiting teammates' aim. Kirishima called support lane. Sero's tape pulled one waiting opponent off angle. Bakugo ricocheted his ball off the alley wall. It hit the fleeing candidate's final target. The target flashed. Candidate eliminated by Bakugo Katsuki. The field system chimed. Candidate Bakugo Katsuki qualified. For one second, Bakugo looked furious. Not because he had passed. Because passing meant leaving.
The field still moved. U. A. still hunted. Ren saw the exact moment Bakugo's body wanted to stay. Fight more. Protect shape. Score more. Be present by force. Then Bakugo's own sentence came back to claim him. If they stop, the field keeps moving. Exam rule. Candidate qualified. proceed to exit route. Bakugo clicked his tongue so hard it sounded like a threat against the sky. Then he turned toward the nearest U. A. lane.
"Field keeps moving!" Kirishima grinned despite himself.
"Yeah!" Bakugo pointed at Midoriya.
"Do not get stupid" Midoriya nodded.
"I will not""That was too fast. suspicious""I will try not to""Better" He looked at Ren.
"You too" Ren said "Accepted" He looked at Shinso.
"Use the damn voice if the reason is clean" Shinso said "Operationally rude""Correct" Then Bakugo moved toward the qualified exit route, blasting one last time only to clear his own path, not to interfere. He did not look back. Mostly. The shape changed. Immediately. U. A. lost its loudest edge. Several outside candidates saw it too. Pressure shifted toward the gap. Kirishima's shoulders loaded. No wall unless assigned. He breathed.
"Right edge open. taking support lane. not wall" Iida called "Right lane adjusted. Bakugo exited. field keeps moving" Yaoyorozu said "Reform. no collapse around absence" Kaminari whispered "Absence is loud" Jiro said "Map""Right edge missing. fear loud. voice low. map present" Shinso moved half a lane right. Not to replace Bakugo. Wrong role. To change the angle. Ren rolled rear-left to cover the line that would otherwise pull Yaoyorozu backward. No monitor. No brace. Chair mobility. Current map.
Then Todoroki scored his second elimination. It happened almost quietly. A group had overcorrected around his narrow ice lane, assuming he would keep shaping terrain rather than scoring. He named escalation only to himself this time because no one needed it. Small ice lane failed. Direct throw. He used a thin ice plate to alter his ball's path by a handspan and struck the final target of a candidate he had already hit twice across the last five minutes. Candidate eliminated by Todoroki Shoto.
Candidate Todoroki Shoto qualified. He stood still for one heartbeat. Inasa's wind roared far away. Shoto looked toward U. A. Not his father. Not Inasa. Not weather. Field.
"Field keeps moving" Then he exited. No drama. Bakugo would hate that Todoroki made the sentence sound calm. Good. U. A.'s shape changed again. Two major known threats removed from the field. That was good for their pass count. Bad for those still inside. Because now the field saw openings. Because now some candidates realized the famous ones could be forced out by passing, leaving the rest exposed. Because Ren and Shinso were still there. Because Midoriya was still there. Because U. A. was still U. A.
"Sixty-eight candidates have qualified" Time changed texture. The first stage had become a narrowing throat. Yaoyorozu's voice remained clear.
"Remaining U. A. active. status" Midoriya said "No targets lost. one elimination? no. multiple points. map present" Uraraka said "One target lost. no elimination. map present" Iida said "No targets lost. points scattered. map present" Kirishima said "One target lost. no elimination. support lane. map present" Jiro said "No targets lost. one assist finish. map present" Kaminari said "One target lost. direct points. no elimination. voice low. map present" Mina said "No targets lost. disruption. no elimination.
map present" Sero said "One elimination. one target lost. map present" Asui said "One elimination. no targets lost. map present" Yaoyorozu said "No elimination. no targets lost. central risk. map present" Shinso said "One elimination. no targets lost. throat fine. Quirk used once. map present" Ren said "One target lost. one direct point. no elimination. no brace. map present" The numbers were not enough. Not for most of them. Surviving was not passing. Shape had to score.
The next wave came from Ketsubutsu and two smaller schools at once, drawn by the gap Bakugo and Todoroki had left. Shindo smiled from the left, hand near the ground. Yo Shindo looked directly at Midoriya.
"U. A. is still standing. Impressive" Midoriya did not answer the bait. Shindo's smile deepened. The ground began to hum. Ren felt the vibration through the wheels before it spread. Stronger than before. Not dangerous. Disruptive. Timed with incoming throws from three directions.
"Ground source left. strong vibration. incoming multi-angle" Ren called Yaoyorozu responded "Split lanes. score through disruption" Shinso's scarf lifted. Kaminari lowered his voice. Jiro's earjacks caught the high arcs. Midoriya shifted. Uraraka lifted debris. Iida verified. Kirishima did not become wall. Ren's chair rocked once. His hand steadied. One target lost. Two remaining. No proof. No brace. The balls came in. The shape bent. Did not break. Yet.
