Chương 97: The Shape of Questions

The first question came from the news. Ren did not hear it directly. U. A. did not let the students watch the press conference live, which meant every student immediately understood that the press conference was bad enough to become interesting. Even Kaminari, still half-hoarse from irritant exposure and wrapped in a medical blanket he had started calling his tragic cloak, had muttered that nothing said do not panic like adults hiding a screen. Kurose had not disagreed.
She had simply said "Eat first" That was how Ren knew the press conference was worse than she wanted to admit. Observation room one remained stripped of small objects, but by the second morning after the attack it had gained a strange domestic ugliness. A second chair had been approved for supervised visits. The bolted table had a scratch on one corner from nothing Ren was allowed to blame on anyone. A sealed food tray sat to the left of his chart.
The glass wall reflected him faintly when the hallway lights shifted, making him look like a boy inside an exhibit about surviving badly. He looked away from the reflection. His palms were cool. That was good. That was suspicious. That was just a fact. Kurose stood by the glass with a tablet in one hand. The press conference transcript was on it. She had not offered to show him the video. Ren appreciated that too much.
She read the first public question aloud because Ren had asked to know the shape of what was outside the walls. A reporter had asked whether U. A. could still claim to protect its students after a villain group breached a remote training site. Kurose stopped there. Ren waited.
"That is the first question?"
"Yes""What did Nezu answer?" Kurose looked at the tablet.
"He said protection is not a claim. It is a duty measured by actions before, during, and after failure. Then he stated that all students were accounted for, medical care was ongoing, and the investigation would determine what failed and what held" Ren looked at his open hands.
"What failed and what held""Yes""That sounds like him""It made three reporters uncomfortable""That also sounds like him" Kurose's mouth twitched. The next question was about the missing staff member. They did not use Ragdoll's name at first. Then someone did. Someone always did. The transcript said a reporter asked whether the missing pro hero Ragdoll was presumed dead. Ren's hands warmed. Not much. Enough that Kurose stopped reading and looked at him.
"Continue?" she asked Ren breathed once.
"Yes" Kurose read Nezu's answer.
"No such presumption has been made. Search and recovery operations continue. We will not discuss operational details that could endanger her" Ren closed his eyes. Alive remains possible. Possible was a cruel word. It was still better than gone.
"What was the next question?" he asked Kurose looked at the tablet, then at him.
"The next one is about students""Read it""A reporter asked whether any student was specifically targeted" Ren's palms warmed more. There it was. The shape outside the gates had found one of the real questions. Not the whole question. Enough.
"What did he say?" Kurose read more slowly.
"Principal Nezu said the investigation is ongoing, and U. A. will not release information that could increase risk to minors" Ren let the answer settle. Clean. Incomplete. Necessary.
"That is not a no""No" Kurose said"People will hear that""Yes""And then they will invent names""Yes" He looked toward the glass. No reporters there. Still, he could feel the gates. Bakugo's name would grow teeth faster than his own because Bakugo had a public shape. Explosions. Anger. Festival footage. Loudness. A story people could misunderstand without knowing they were doing it. Ren was harder to invent. That did not make him safer.
It only made the questions narrower and more dangerous when they came from inside. Kurose lowered the tablet.
"That is enough press for now" Ren almost objected. Then noticed his hands. Warm. He nodded.
"Enough" Kurose placed the tablet face down on the bolted table.
"Good""Trustworthy" Ren corrected automatically She looked at him. He looked back. After a second, she said "Annoying, but yes" The second question came from Ashido Mina. Not through a screened message this time. In person. U. A. had begun allowing short supervised peer visits in groups of two or three, stripped of loose items and inspected so thoroughly that Sero had apparently asked whether his elbows counted as detachable equipment. He had been denied an answer.
Mina arrived with Jiro and Sero, all three of them looking like they had been told to be casual by someone who had never met trauma or teenagers. Mina waved with both hands open.
"Look. No marbles. No pens. No sneaky emotional support glitter. I am legally boring" Jiro said "You have never been legally boring" Sero lifted both empty hands.
"I miss pockets" Ren sat at the bolted table and felt the room shift from medical display to awkward social disaster. That was an improvement. Maybe. Kurose stood near the door.
"Ten minutes. No details beyond cleared categories. No crowding" Mina gave her a salute.
"Yes ma'am" Jiro looked at Ren.
"You look less dead than yesterday" Sero winced. Jiro's face changed.
"Sorry. That came out wrong" Ren said "It was accurate enough" Mina pointed at him.
"No. You do not get to make awkward easier by agreeing with it" Ren blinked. Sero nodded gravely.
"She's right. We need to suffer through our own bad wording" Ren almost smiled. Jiro sat across from him. Mina sat beside her. Sero took the chair nearest the glass and immediately looked betrayed by its lack of wheels. For a moment, no one asked anything. Ren could tell they wanted to. He could also tell they were trying not to. That was worse in a gentler way. Mina broke first.
"Okay. I have one question, and you can say no, and I won't explode or cry dramatically unless you want me to for distraction" Ren said "Ask""Are you scared of us asking?" The question did not go where Ren expected. His hands stayed cool.
"Yes" Mina nodded like she had needed that more than an explanation.
"Okay. Then we'll be less stupid" Jiro looked at her.
"Bold promise""I said less" Sero leaned forward.
"Can I ask a practical one?" Ren nodded.
"If we see you in the hall later, and you have security with you, are we supposed to pretend that's normal?" Ren breathed. That was a good question. A human one.
"No. Pretending will probably make it stranger. But do not make it the only thing in the hallway" Sero thought about that.
"So like, we can say hi""Yes""Can we complain about homework?"
"If there is homework, yes" Jiro said "There will be homework. Evil survives everything" Mina leaned her chin on her hand, then stopped because staff had warned her not to place hands too close to the table edge if sudden movement happened. Her face tightened with irritation at the rule, then softened when she noticed Ren notice.
"Does that bother you?" she asked"Yes""The rules?"
"Yes""Do you want us to act like they don't?"
"No" Enjoying the story? Show your support by reading it on the official site.
"Do you want us to be mad about them?" Ren paused. That one took longer.
"Maybe a little" Mina nodded.
"Cool. I am mad about them" Jiro lifted a hand.
"Same" Sero said "Yeah. They're awful. I'm glad they're here. Both" Ren looked at him. Sero shrugged.
"Tape user. I understand hating useful restrictions" Jiro snorted. Mina looked at Ren more carefully.
"Are you allowed to answer if someone asks what happened with you?"
"No""Okay. Then we won't ask" The simplicity of it hit harder than interrogation would have. Ren looked down.
"Thank you" Mina's voice softened.
"You don't have to thank people for not making it worse" Ren looked back up.
"I might anyway""Fine. But I will judge you""Accepted" Jiro pointed at him.
"That word is banned unless medically necessary" Ren blinked. Sero nodded.
"Yeah. Yesterday everything was accepted. Accepted this, accepted that. It was spooky" Mina leaned back.
"Say something normal" Ren stared at them.
"What counts as normal?"
"Complain about breakfast""The spoon was too soft" Jiro looked delighted.
"There" Sero said "Tragic" Mina placed a hand over her heart.
"Healing begins with spoon criticism" Kurose looked at the ceiling. Ren smiled. Small. Real. Mina saw it and did not make the mistake of celebrating too loudly. When their ten minutes ended, Jiro stood first. At the door, she turned.
"If people start asking in gross ways, tell us" Ren said "I am not supposed to start fights" Jiro's mouth flattened.
"I did not say fight" Sero raised his hand.
"For legal reasons, none of us heard a plan" Mina gave Ren another open-handed wave.
"Here, okay?" He answered.
"Here" They left. The room felt better for three minutes. Then quieter for the fourth. The third question came from Midoriya's mother. Not to Ren. Not directly. He heard about it from Recovery Girl, who entered the room at 11: 40 looking like she had personally threatened three administrators and a vending machine. She checked Ren's palms without preamble.
"Cool""Yes""Any dizziness?"
"No""Any urge to perform emotional surgery on yourself with a pencil you do not have?" Ren looked at her.
"That is very specific""I have met you" Kurose, near the glass, made a quiet sound that was not laughter because she valued survival. Recovery Girl folded her arms.
"Young Midoriya's mother arrived" Ren's chest tightened.
"How is he?"
"Still alive. Still severely injured. Still lucky and stupid in proportions that make my blood pressure a war crime" Ren swallowed.
"And his mother?" Recovery Girl's expression changed. Not soft. Older.
"She asked why saving one child required her child to become unrecognizable on a stretcher" Ren had no answer. There was none. Recovery Girl looked at him.
"That question is not yours to answer""I know""Do you?" Ren looked at his hands.
"I want to""That is not the same thing""No" She sat across from him, which was alarming enough that Ren straightened. Recovery Girl pointed a finger at him.
"Listen carefully. There will be questions that feel like doors because you can imagine an answer. That does not mean you are the person who should walk through them" Ren's mouth went dry.
"Midoriya saved Kota""Yes""He also hurt himself badly""Yes""I know both lines""Good. Keep knowing them. Do not use them to appoint yourself priest of everyone else's grief" Kurose muttered "Excellent phrasing" Recovery Girl ignored her. Ren nodded.
"I will not""You might. So we will stop you" That was more comforting than it should have been. Recovery Girl stood.
"Also, his mother asked if he was in pain. I said not more than I can help. She did not like that answer. I did not either" Ren closed his eyes. Midoriya had moved. Kota had lived. Inko Midoriya had received a son broken by heroism and no answer clean enough to hold him. Ren opened his eyes.
"Can I send a message?"
"To Midoriya?"
"To his mother" Recovery Girl looked at him for a long moment.
"What would it say?" Ren thought. Not apology. Not explanation. Not debt.
"Thank you for letting us know he is still here" Recovery Girl's face changed in a way he could not read. Then she nodded once.
"I will ask if she wants to receive it. Not before""Yes" She left again. Kurose watched Ren.
"That was careful""Barely""Barely counts in disaster" The fourth question came from Bakugo's mother, indirectly, at a volume that suggested walls were a personal challenge. Ren was being moved to the cleared student overlap room for lunch when a door down the corridor opened and Mitsuki Bakugo's voice shot out.
"So he's supposed to just sit there while adults decide what story people tell about him?" A quieter voice answered, likely Masaru Bakugo.
"Mitsuki""No. I'm asking" Bakugo's voice followed.
"I'm right here!"
"I know you're right there! That's why I'm yelling where you can hear me!" Aizawa's voice cut in.
"Mrs. Bakugo""What?"
"Lower volume. Injured students" Silence. Then, grudgingly, quieter.
"Fine. Injured students get quiet rage" Ren passed the door at exactly the wrong time. It opened wider. Bakugo saw him. Mitsuki saw him too. Her eyes moved over Ren's stripped observation clothes, the visible security escort, the open hands, the absence of anything personal on him. Her face changed. Not pity. Recognition of another mother's nightmare in a different shape.
"You're Akiyama" Ren stopped because Kurose stopped.
"Yes" Mitsuki looked at him for half a second longer than politeness allowed. Then said "You eating?" Ren blinked. Bakugo made a strangled sound.
"Ma!"
"What? He's skinny""I swear to—" Aizawa said "Bakugo" Ren answered before the hallway could combust.
"Yes" Mitsuki narrowed her eyes.
"Enough?" Kurose said "Monitored and improving""That sounds like no" Ren said "It was half breakfast and lunch pending" Mitsuki pointed at him.
"Finish lunch" Bakugo looked betrayed by reality.
"Stop parenting random people in the hallway!" She rounded on him.
"Stop getting nearly kidnapped and I'll consider hobbies" Masaru murmured "That is not a hobby" Mitsuki ignored him. Then she looked back at Ren.
"Your mother here?"
"Yes""Good. Tell her Mitsuki Bakugo says this is bullshit" Aizawa closed his eyes. Kurose said "We will translate that into guardian solidarity" Mitsuki snorted.
"Don't translate me" Ren, against all medical odds, smiled.
"I will tell her" Bakugo pointed at Ren.
"Do not" Ren said "I thought you said I was bad at lying" Bakugo stared at him with open betrayal. Mitsuki laughed. Loud. Then remembered injured students and lowered it halfway.
"Kid's got you" Bakugo looked like he wanted the villains to come back. Kurose guided Ren onward before anyone could say something irreversible. As they walked, Ren's palms stayed cool. That seemed important. Hana received the message ten minutes later during lunch. Ren watched through a secured call as his mother listened to him repeat Mitsuki's exact words. Hana went very still. Then nodded gravely.
"Tell Mitsuki Bakugo she is correct" Daichi, off-screen, said "Guardian solidarity" Hana said "Do not translate me either" Ren smiled again. Food tasted less like safety after that. Not good. Less like safety. That was progress. The fifth question came from Todoroki. He waited until the student overlap room had thinned after lunch, until most of the others had been escorted back to medical checks or guardian calls.
He approached with both hands visible, stopped at the distance marked by the blue tape, and looked at Ren without forcing eye contact.
"Can I ask something?" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Todoroki's face was unreadable in the way that usually meant something very readable had been locked behind it.
"When the object fell, I knew freezing it directly might be dangerous. But I still wanted to freeze it directly" Ren waited. Todoroki continued "Not because it was the best option. Because it was fire and fear and a thing moving toward someone. I wanted to stop it before thinking" His left hand flexed once.
"I keep thinking about that" Ren looked at him. The question was not only about the sphere. Not only about the camp. Not his door entirely. Still, the hallway had put a piece of it in front of him.
"You changed the angle""Yes""That mattered""I know" Todoroki sounded faintly frustrated by knowing. Ren understood.
"Knowing does not always reach the part still replaying it" Todoroki's eyes lifted.
"No" They sat with that. Then Todoroki asked the real question.
"Do you want people not to ask you anything?" Ren looked through the glass toward the corridor. Mina's less stupid. Kurose's muscle. Recovery Girl's doors. Bakugo's do not get boxed. Hana's fear is allowed to come home too.
"No" Todoroki waited. Ren chose the words carefully.
"I want people to ask questions that have somewhere safe to go" Todoroki considered.
"If the question is only curiosity?"
"Then probably no""If it changes how we should act around you?"
"Then yes""If it is about something we saw?" Ren looked back at him.
"Maybe. But not everything seen belongs to everyone who saw it" Todoroki's expression changed. Small. Deep. He understood that too well.
"Yes" A beat passed. Then Todoroki said "Thank you" Ren said "You are welcome" Todoroki began to leave, then paused.
"Also, Bakugo's mother is loud" Ren blinked. Then laughed once. Todoroki looked mildly pleased with himself and left. The sixth question came from the board, though it wore a nicer suit. A U. A. administrator Ren did not know entered observation room one at 15: 00 with Nezu, Kurose, and Aizawa. The administrator had kind eyes and a folder full of phrases that made Ren immediately distrust him. He sat. Ren remained in the chair. The administrator began gently.
"Akiyama, we are reviewing how to refer to your involvement in internal summaries. We want to avoid language that makes you uncomfortable" That was the kind of sentence that hid a blade under a napkin. Kurose's expression did not change. Aizawa's did, which meant the blade was probably large. The administrator continued "Terms like classified target may be accurate, but they can create emotional burden. We are considering softer phrasing for non-operational documents.
Something like protected witness, or sensitive student" Ren stared. Protected witness. Sensitive student. Not target. Not structural-interest. Softer. Cleaner. Wrong in a different direction. He felt his palms warm. Not high. Enough. He opened his fingers. Nezu watched. Kurose did not speak. Aizawa looked like a man silently begging the administrator to continue so he could justify homicide by policy. Ren asked "Would the softer terms change the safety measures?" The administrator blinked.
"No. Operationally, no""Would they reduce what staff need to know?"
"No""Would they make my parents understand less?" The man hesitated. That was answer. Ren looked at the folder.
"Then they are not for me" The administrator's face flushed.
"I assure you, student comfort is one of our goals" Ren's voice stayed quiet.
"Comfort that makes the map worse is not comfort" Aizawa's eyes shifted toward him. Kurose's pen moved. Nezu folded his paws. The administrator tried again.
"Words can stigmatize""Yes" Ren said "So can hiding the useful ones because they sound ugly" Silence. Aizawa muttered "There it is" The administrator looked at him. Aizawa said nothing else. Nezu spoke softly.
"I believe Akiyama has answered" The man closed the folder.
"Understood" After he left, Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Good" Ren looked down.
"Trustworthy?"
"No. Good" Kurose nodded.
"Sometimes good is allowed" Ren's palms cooled. The seventh question came from himself. It arrived near dusk, after the hallway had quieted and the press outside the gates had become distant flashes beyond the walls. Ren was back in observation room one. Hana and Daichi were in guardian holding. Shinso was nearby. Bakugo was somewhere else under guard and probably ruining a nurse's day. Midoriya was still sedated. Kota had been allowed to see him breathe again for ten seconds. Ragdoll was still missing.
Ren opened his chart and wrote the day in pieces. Press questions. Students asked better than expected. Mina asked if I was scared of asking. Sero asked how to act in hallways. Jiro allowed awkwardness. Recovery Girl said some doors are not mine. Mitsuki Bakugo says this is bullshit. Hana agrees. Todoroki asked what kind of questions are safe. Administrator proposed softer words. Rejected because softer map was worse. He stopped. The question sat underneath all of it. What do I want people to know?
Not what was safe. Not what was allowed. Want. The word felt almost luxurious. He stared at the blank line. Then wrote: I want them to know I am scared without making fear the only thing in the room. Another line. I want them to know Ragdoll is missing without making her only a missing function. Another. I want them to know Bakugo was targeted without making him a prize that got away. Another. I want them to know I was targeted without making me an exhibit. He paused. The final line came slowly.
I want questions that leave the person larger than the answer. He read it. It sounded almost like something Nezu would say, if Nezu had been more tired and less interested in chess. Shinso, who had been allowed a final five-minute check-in and was standing outside the glass because voice rest had become legally meaningful, read the line through the room's reflection. He pressed the intercom button.
"That is disgustingly decent" Ren looked up.
"You were supposed to be resting""I was resting with my eyes open""That is watching""Don't police my healing" Ren almost smiled. Shinso looked at the chart again.
"Questions that leave the person larger than the answer""Yes""Sounds hard""Yes""People are bad at hard""Yes" Shinso's eyes moved toward the hallway. Then back to Ren.
"For what it's worth, you are still annoying after the category" Ren felt the words land in the exact place the day had been pressing. Still annoying. After the category. Person larger than answer.
"Thank you" Shinso grimaced.
"Do not thank me for insulting you""I might anyway""I will leave""You already have to" He lifted one hand.
"Here" Ren answered.
"Here" Shinso left. Ren looked back at the chart. The room was still stripped. Still secure. Still not home. Outside, people asked questions through cameras, offices, hallways, text messages, anger, jokes, silence, and closed doors. Some questions were knives. Some were bridges. Some were hands reaching without checking what they might be carrying. Ren placed both palms flat on the page. Cool. Open. His. He wrote one last line before the light dimmed.
A question is safest when it remembers there is a person on the other side. Then he closed the chart. Beyond U. A.' s walls, the cameras kept flashing. Inside, the locks kept listening. And for the first time since the attack, Ren thought that perhaps not every question had to be survived by refusing it. Some could be shaped. Some could be answered. Some could be left waiting at the door until they learned how to knock.
