Chương 82: The Morning That Moved

The last day before departure was too ordinary. Ren distrusted that most of all. There should have been a storm. A security incident. A fragment. A sudden medical delay. A final meeting called by Nezu where everyone said calm things with terrifying implications. At minimum, there should have been rain, because rain had already established itself as the weather of conditional decisions.
Instead, Sunday morning arrived clear and bright, with sunlight cutting through the apartment curtains, the smell of rice in the kitchen, Daichi muttering at Bentaro near the door, and Hana checking the refrigerator as if food could be organized into emotional preparedness. Ren woke before his alarm. That was not suspicious by itself. Everything else was. He lay still for thirty seconds and performed the first check. Body. No scar heat. No stiffness beyond normal. No fever. No nausea. No fragment pressure.
No trees. No smoke. No branch crack. No hand reaching. Just ceiling. Just morning. Just the absurd knowledge that tomorrow he would leave home carrying socks, medical forms, status cards, and a conditional yes that had been signed by too many adults to remain imaginary. He sat up. No dizziness. He wrote the first chart entry before leaving his room. Sleep: 6h50. Woke once. No dream retained. No scar heat. No fragment association. Emotional state: yellow-low, anticipatory. Action: breakfast before bag review.
He looked at the line. Breakfast before bag review. The sentence sounded like Hana wearing paperwork. Probably because it was. In the kitchen, Hana looked up when he entered.
"Status?"
"Yellow-low. No heat. No fragment. Breakfast before bag review" She nodded.
"Good" Daichi turned from the doorway with Bentaro half-open in his hands.
"Bentaro status yellow" Ren stopped.
"What?" Daichi tested the umbrella hinge again.
"Minor stiffness. No structural failure. Emotional readiness high" Hana looked at him.
"You are not bringing Bentaro to U. A."
"I know""You are checking him because Ren leaves tomorrow" Daichi paused. Then closed the umbrella carefully.
"Yes" Ren's throat tightened. No heat. Just father. Hana placed breakfast on the table.
"Food first" Ren sat. Daichi placed Bentaro back by the door with great seriousness.
"Food first" They ate without discussing the bag for seven minutes. Ren knew because the kitchen clock was visible and because he was not allowed to time things in a way that made breakfast into a test, which of course made him aware of the time with even greater precision. Hana knew. She said nothing. This was mercy. After breakfast, the bag came out. It sat on the living room floor like a small, dark animal pretending it had not changed the room's gravity. The main compartment was packed.
The side pocket held medical forms and status cards. The top pocket held flashlight, water bottle, and the allowed emergency contact card. The inner pocket held the blue Anchor card. The grounding item problem remained. Ren placed three cards on the table. The Anchor card. COMMUNICATION ANCHORI keep the map and give the next safe action. On the back: I do not need to reach it to affect it. The family card. Food before becoming symbolic. On the back: Route can hold one step at a time.
And the copy Shinso had given him. If I become someone's anchor, I still get to be a person standing on the floor. Hana looked at the three cards. Daichi looked at the cards, then at Ren, then at Bentaro, as if weighing whether umbrellas could become legal precedent. Ren said "Thirteen said one grounding item" Hana nodded.
"You were going to ask Kurose""I sent the question last night" His phone buzzed on the table as if summoned by administrative fate. Ren picked it up. Kurose's answer was brief. Approved. Anchor card counts as role material. Family card approved as grounding item. Shinso card approved as peer-boundary reminder if stored with support documents. Do not turn cards into archive. Ren read it aloud. Hana's mouth twitched. Daichi nodded.
"Clear categories" Ren stared at the phone.
"She knew I would create an archive" Hana said "Everyone knew" Daichi said "I hoped""That is not better" He placed the Anchor card into the role sleeve, the family card into the inner pocket, and Shinso's card with the peer awareness documents. Three cards. One bag. No archive. Barely. The rest of Sunday moved in small tasks that felt larger because every ordinary thing had become the last ordinary version before departure. Laundry. Final bag check. Lunch. Chart update. Phone charging. Medical pouch check.
No extra training. No extra research. No secret review of forest terrain. No searching for camp speculation. No reading public forums. No opening the bag more than twice after final check. That last rule was Hana's. Daichi broke it first. Hana caught him with one hand on the zipper. He froze.
"I was verifying the verified""You were anxiety-checking" He withdrew his hand.
"Correct" Ren said "Trustworthy data" Daichi pointed at him.
"Do not use school against me" Hana said "Too late" The doorbell rang at 16: 00. Shinso stood outside with his bag over one shoulder and a face that said he had come for logistical reasons and would fight anyone who called them emotional. Hana opened the door.
"You are early" Shinso looked at the floor.
"My bag was checked at home and then I did not want to keep rechecking it there" Hana stepped aside.
"Come in. Rechecking limit is two" Shinso entered.
"Is this a rule?"
"Yes""House or camp?"
"Both now" He looked at Ren.
"Your family has annexed reality" Ren said "They started with soup""Terrible precedent" Shinso's bag was smaller than Ren expected. Efficient. Dark. Labeled because Aizawa had won that war. A small gray tag hung from one side pocket. DISRUPTION SUPPORT / PEER AWARENESS CONDITIONAL Ren looked at it. Shinso noticed.
"Do not""I said nothing""You were going to""I was going to ask status" If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. Shinso stared. Then exhaled.
"Yellow. Bag is real. Camp is real. Social debt low. Personal want present. No Quirk pressure" Hana, already halfway to the kitchen, said "Good report" Shinso closed his eyes.
"I walked into that" Daichi brought tea.
"Sit before becoming symbolic" Shinso looked at Ren.
"You are contagious" Ren said "Good enough" They sat on the living room floor with both bags between them, not because anyone needed to sit there, but because bags were easier to face from ground level. Hana pretended to chop vegetables in the kitchen. Daichi pretended to adjust papers. Neither pretended well. Ren looked at Shinso's bag.
"Grounding item?" Shinso's fingers touched the side pocket.
"The card""Only one?"
"I am not you""Fair" Shinso looked at Ren's bag.
"How many?"
"Categorically one""That is not an answer""It is Kurose-approved""Disturbing sentence" They sat in silence. Then Shinso said "I got the daily consent form" Ren nodded.
"Me too" Daily consent. Not one yes forever. Every morning. Every major block. Travel. Arrival. First route. Peer awareness. Status. Again and again, consent would be checked until it became annoying enough to remain alive. Shinso leaned back on his hands.
"What if I say no one morning?" Ren looked at him.
"To peer awareness?"
"Yes""Then you say no""What if you are worse that day?"
"Then staff uses other support""What if you look betrayed?" Ren thought of guilt face. The category existed now.
"I report guilt face if present" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"You better""What if I say no?"
"To camp?"
"To a block. To peer awareness. To continuing after yellow-red" Shinso looked at him.
"Then you say no""What if you are disappointed?"
"I will be" Ren nodded. Honest. Shinso continued "And then I will either deal with it or report being bad at dealing with it" Ren looked down.
"That helps""Good" The word came without resistance. They both noticed. Neither commented. Mercy again. Dinner that night was not a celebration and not a funeral. Hana had apparently decided those were the only two categories she absolutely refused. It was rice, grilled fish, vegetables, miso soup, and fruit. Normal food. Too much of it. But not dramatic. Daichi did not make a toast. Hana did not cry at the table. Shinso did not pretend the meal meant nothing, which was perhaps the most shocking development of all.
Halfway through dinner, Daichi said "Tomorrow morning, we leave at seven" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Hana said "No bag opening after breakfast except final medication check""Yes" Daichi said "No forgetting phone charger""Yes" Shinso said "No emotional towel escalation" Hana pointed at him with chopsticks.
"Correct" Ren stared at Shinso.
"You joined them""I adapted to the dominant logistical ecosystem" Daichi looked impressed. Hana said "Good" Shinso looked betrayed by language again. After dinner, they did not speak of danger for almost twenty minutes. They spoke of the bus. Of whether Aizawa would sleep on the ride. Of whether Pixie-Bob would call anyone else kitten. Of whether Bakugo would survive being told not to duel terrain. Of whether Midoriya had successfully chosen one notebook. He had. Barely. He had sent proof to the group chat.
One notebook. One. Closed. Captioned with visible suffering. Bakugo had replied: No one cares about your emotional notebook diet. Todoroki had replied: The phrase is memorable. Yaoyorozu had replied: It may help him remember the rule. Bakugo had replied: I'm muting again. Kaminari had replied: You never muted. Bakugo had not answered. The table at the Akiyama apartment laughed quietly at that. Even Shinso.
After Shinso left with a container of leftovers and no argument left strong enough to defeat Hana, Ren stood by the door and looked at the bags. One dark bag. One empty space where tomorrow it would be gone. Hana stood beside him.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Bag real. Departure real. No heat" She nodded. Daichi joined them. For a while, none of them spoke. Then Daichi said "No is not the only way to love you" Ren closed his eyes.
"I know" Hana said "Coming home is also part of leaving" He opened his eyes. That sentence was worse. Better. Worse because it touched the place fear lived. Better because it gave the leaving a route back.
"Say it" she said Ren breathed.
"Coming home is part of leaving""Good" Daichi placed one hand on the bag. Then removed it. Not checking. Just saying something without words. Ren wrote three lines before bed. The bag is ready because I stopped opening it. Then: Daily consent means tomorrow's yes does not have to carry the whole week. Then: Coming home is part of leaving. He closed the notebook. No more. The last night before movement did not feel like sleep. It felt like waiting with the lights off. Still, he slept. Six hours thirty. Woke twice.
No dream retained. No heat. Morning arrived before fear could become dramatic. Departure morning had rules. Breakfast. Chart. Medication check. Phone. Bag. Shoes. No last-minute research. No extra socks. No symbolic speeches before leaving the apartment. Hana broke that one. Not with a speech. With a card. At the door, she handed Ren a small folded slip.
"Not a grounding item. Read on the bus or not at all" Ren took it.
"What is it?"
"A sentence" Daichi lifted Bentaro.
"Two, maybe" Ren looked at them. His throat tightened. No heat.
"Thank you" Hana hugged him after asking. He said yes. Daichi hugged him after pretending he was only adjusting the bag strap and then giving up. Ren allowed that too. At the station, Shinso waited near the entrance with his bag, hair slightly damp from morning humidity, expression carefully blank until he saw them. Hana waved. Shinso looked trapped by politeness and raised one hand. Daichi held up Bentaro. Shinso said "Status of umbrella?" Daichi answered solemnly "Green. Emotional load high" Shinso nodded.
"Trustworthy data" Ren almost laughed. They reached U. A. at 07: 52. The buses waited beyond the main gate. Two large vehicles, dark windows, staff near the luggage hold, students clustered by class and assignment. The destination was still not written anywhere. The air smelled like exhaust, wet pavement, and too many bodies pretending excitement and dread were easy to separate. Hero Course students were louder than conditional students. That seemed natural.
Kaminari argued that secret destinations made him hungrier. Sero asked if anxiety could count as cardio. Mina was trying to guess whether the Pussycats would make them hike immediately. Kirishima carried a bag that looked suspiciously heavy. Bakugo had no visible excess luggage and an expression that said anyone who asked about it would die. Midoriya stood near Iida with one notebook in his hands. Closed.
Arai, who was not going but had come to see off several Cross-Course students, looked at the notebook and nodded once. Midoriya looked relieved. Uraraka waved at Ren. Yaoyorozu had her bag perfectly packed, because of course. Todoroki stood beside her with a bag that looked normal except for one small family charm attached to the zipper. Ren saw it. Looked away. The door was his. Kurose stood beside the conditional check-in table.
Aizawa stood near the bus door with a clipboard and the expression of a man already regretting every teenager present. Recovery Girl was not coming, but her face appeared on Kurose's tablet during medical check-in. Ren stepped forward.
"Chart" He handed it over. Kurose read. Recovery Girl, through the tablet, said "Status""Yellow. Departure. No heat. No fragment. Slept six thirty. Woke twice. No dream retained. Breakfast completed. Medication pouch checked" Recovery Girl narrowed her eyes.
"No hidden compensation?"
"No""No extra training last night?"
"No""No reopening bag after final check?" Ren glanced at Hana. Hana looked innocent.
"No" Daichi said "Verified" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Medically cleared for travel. Not cleared for stupidity" Ren said "Understood" Bakugo, passing behind him, muttered "That should be everyone's clearance" Recovery Girl's eyes snapped toward the tablet edge.
"Bakugo Katsuki, I can hear you" Bakugo froze. The entire area froze with him. He slowly turned.
"How?" Recovery Girl smiled. No one felt safe.
"Medical instinct" Bakugo walked away faster. Shinso checked in next.
"Status" Aizawa asked"Yellow. Departure. Social load high. Personal want present. No Quirk pressure. Labeled items endured. Daily peer awareness consent not yet requested" Aizawa nodded.
"Travel peer awareness block. Consent?" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren looked back. Kurose said "Daily, specific, revocable" Ren answered first.
"I consent to Shinso within awareness range for travel and arrival check. Not sole support. Revocable" Shinso said "I consent to awareness range for travel and arrival check. Not handler. Not medical. Revocable" Kurose wrote.
"Approved" Iida, nearby, looked like he wanted to applaud the procedural clarity and knew better. Uraraka smiled instead. Aizawa assigned seats. Not randomly. Never randomly. Ren sat on the aisle, middle section, close enough to Kurose's staff seat for reporting and far enough from the front that every stop would not feel like being called. Shinso sat across the aisle, one row back. Iida in front-left. Uraraka front-right. Yaoyorozu across from Kurose's row.
Midoriya and Bakugo farther back but not together at first. Aizawa saw the arrangement, sighed, and changed it.
"Midoriya. Bakugo. Same row" Both boys reacted. Bakugo shouted "Why?" Aizawa said "Because the bus is also data" Midoriya whispered "Oh no" Bakugo pointed at Ren.
"This is his fault somehow" Ren said "Low-confidence accusation" Shinso said "Report category: emotional displacement" Bakugo's glare could have damaged paint. Kirishima laughed.
"Come on man, same gate" Bakugo turned on him.
"Do not say that like a slogan" Kurose said "Board" They boarded. Ren placed his bag overhead only after checking that the medical pouch remained accessible. He sat. Shinso sat across and one row back. Hana and Daichi stood outside the window line. Not waving too much. Not crying in a way that made departure impossible. Just there. Kurose entered last before Aizawa. She held sealed envelopes.
"Destination disclosure" The bus went quiet. Even Kaminari stopped speaking. Kurose handed each student a sheet face down.
"Do not turn until instructed" Sano was not on the bus, but Ren heard his spirit object somewhere. Aizawa stood at the front.
"Turn" Pages flipped. Ren read. SUMMER TRAINING CAMP Remote forest training facility under Wild Wild Pussycats supervision. Location details restricted. Terrain: wooded mountain environment, variable elevation, controlled lodging facility. Arrival protocol: Remain with assigned group. No wandering. Conditional candidates report to staff before leaving bus area. Wooded mountain environment. The words aligned. Forest. Terrain. Elevation. His palm warmed. Mild. He opened his hand on his knee.
"Yellow-red. Location disclosure trigger. Mild right palm heat. No image. No new detail. Continuing seated" Kurose was beside him in two steps. Shinso turned. Not approaching. Good. Recovery Girl's tablet feed appeared in Kurose's hand.
"Heat?"
"Mild. Fading""Image?"
"No. Words triggered existing association""Action?"
"Report. Remain seated. No speculation" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Aizawa looked down the aisle.
"Travel continues" Ren breathed. Mild heat faded. No reset. No closure. Trustworthy data. Outside the window, Hana saw Kurose near Ren and stiffened. Ren lifted one hand. Open. Then thumb up. Not performance. Signal. Hana pressed one hand to her chest. Daichi held Bentaro even though there was no rain. The bus doors closed. That sound should not have mattered. It did. Ren looked through the window. Hana mouthed something. He could not hear. He knew anyway. Food before becoming symbolic.
Daichi lifted Bentaro in a small salute. Ridiculous. Load-bearing. Shinso leaned across the aisle slightly.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Door closed. Heat gone. Parents visible. No fragment""Good enough?" Ren looked at the closed door. At the road ahead. At the card in his pocket. At the slip Hana had given him. He opened it. Two sentences. Hana's handwriting first. Come home angry if you have to. Daichi's below. A route back counts as part of the route. Ren's eyes burned. No heat. Just eyes. He folded the slip and placed it with the family card.
"Good enough" he said The bus began to move. U. A. rolled backward outside the window. The gate passed. The road opened. City streets took them in, ordinary and crowded and unaware of how much structure had been built so that one conditional yes could sit in a bus seat and remain human. Midoriya turned around from his row.
"You okay?" Bakugo said "Don't start the bus therapy" Aizawa said "Forward" Both turned forward. Shinso muttered "Bus is data" Ren almost smiled. The bus turned onto the main road. No forest yet. No smoke. No branch crack. No hand reaching. Only movement. Only students. Only staff. Only a bag overhead, cards in his pocket, parents behind him, conditions around him, and a route that included coming back. Ren wrote one line in his travel notebook before Kurose could tell him not to over-document.
The morning moved and I moved with it. He stopped there. For now, one line was enough. Somewhere far away, later than U. A. believed but earlier than safety deserved, a message crossed a channel that did not know the word consent and would not have cared if it did. Students departed. Garaki read it in a room full of machines. He did not smile this time. Smiling was for curiosity. This was logistics.
"Movement confirmed" he said Behind him, something in the tank opened one eye. On the bus, Ren did not know. His scars stayed cool. The road continued. The morning moved. And for the first time, the door did not open in his mind. It opened under the wheels.
