Chương 96: Public Target, Classified Target

By morning, the news had learned how to circle without knowing what it was circling. They gathered outside U. A.' s gates in vans and coats and polished urgency, cameras pointed toward stone walls that had given them nothing yet. Headlines had already started to breed from scraps. VILLAIN ATTACK AT U. A. TRAINING CAMP STUDENTS INJURED PRO HERO STAFF MEMBER MISSING SECURITY QUESTIONS MOUNT No student names. Not officially. No Bakugo Katsuki. No Ren Akiyama.
No Ragdoll beyond the phrase missing staff member and a photograph taken from a happier day when the Wild Wild Pussycats had still been a team of four in the public eye. Ren saw none of it directly. Observation room one had no television. That was deliberate. It had one secured tablet controlled by staff, one bolted table, one bed, one monitoring stand, one chair too comfortable to trust, and a glass wall that made privacy into something theoretical. Kurose had told him the news existed. She had not shown him.
Ren appreciated that. He hated appreciating it. His breakfast had been inspected, opened, stirred, and declared safe. Hana had sent another approved text. Eat. Sleep if ordered. Do not become noble before noon. Bentaro has been cleared for supervised hallway presence. Your father says this is an institutional breakthrough. Daichi had added his own line below. Route back counts even if it has security tape. Ren read the message three times and then ate before the food could become argument. His palms stayed cool.
The coolness had started to feel like a suspicious visitor. Aizawa arrived at 08: 30. He did not knock on the glass. He simply appeared outside it, hair slightly damp from a shower, bandage at the jaw, scarf replaced, expression unchanged except for the fact that his exhaustion had learned to stand upright. Kurose walked beside him with a folder. Nezu followed, small and composed.
All Might came last in hero form, so broad that the hallway seemed to narrow around him, yet his eyes moved like someone trying very hard not to step on broken glass. Ren stood because All Might had entered. Recovery Girl, who had also appeared somehow from nowhere, immediately said "Sit down before symbolism damages my patient" Ren sat. All Might's mouth twitched with something too tired to be a smile.
"Good morning, young Akiyama" Ren looked at him. There was no good way to answer that.
"Morning" Recovery Girl said "That is acceptable" Nezu stepped inside after the room scan. No one carried loose objects. Even All Might had been checked, which Ren tried not to think about because the mental image of a security officer asking the Symbol of Peace to empty his pockets felt like an entire social collapse disguised as procedure. Nezu climbed onto the opposite chair.
"Today will be uncomfortable" Aizawa leaned against the wall.
"Understatement""Intentionally" Nezu said Kurose sat with the folder closed in front of her. All Might remained standing. Ren noticed. All Might noticed that Ren noticed. He sat too. The chair looked too small under him. Recovery Girl watched Ren's hands. Ren kept them open on the table. Nezu began.
"U. A. will release a public statement within the hour. It will confirm that an attack occurred during training camp, that multiple students were injured, that all students are accounted for, and that one staff member remains missing after hostile action" Ren's hands warmed slightly at all students are accounted for. Not because it was false. Because it was incomplete in the exact way truth could be. Nezu continued before Ren could speak.
"The statement will not name Bakugo Katsuki. It will not name you. It will not describe the capture method. It will not state Ragdoll's Quirk status. It will not explain internal security failures beyond acknowledging an ongoing investigation" Ren looked at the folder.
"So the public will think U. A. is hiding something" Kurose answered "We are" Aizawa said "Because the alternative gets people killed faster" Ren nodded. He knew. Knowing did not make the sentence less heavy. Nezu folded his paws.
"The public category and the operational category must diverge for now. Publicly, all students were attacked. Internally, that is insufficient. The enemy selected" Selected. The word had a clean edge. All Might's hand closed on his knee. Nezu looked toward the door.
"Bakugo will receive his own briefing. You will receive yours. Some information overlaps. Much does not" Ren said "Targets do not stack" Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"Don't turn it into a catchphrase""I was not trying to""Good. It's a safety rule, not poetry" Kurose looked at Aizawa.
"You say that as if half your teaching style is not hostile poetry" Aizawa stared at her. All Might made a strangled sound. Recovery Girl smiled with too many teeth. Ren looked at the table because looking anywhere else felt dangerous. Nezu allowed the moment to exist. Then he said "Bakugo Katsuki is classified as a public-value target. The enemy's attempt to isolate him was consistent across multiple reports.
His combat ability, temperament, visibility, and symbolic usefulness make him attractive to groups seeking recruitment, leverage, or public destabilization" Ren listened. Public-value target. Not just strong. Not just angry. Useful to the story the enemy wanted. Nezu turned the folder slightly but did not open it.
"You are classified differently. The official internal term is classified structural-interest target" Ren looked up. Kurose watched his face. Aizawa did too. Ren repeated the words slowly.
"Structural-interest" Nezu nodded.
"We are not using biological target in student-facing documents" Recovery Girl's expression hardened.
"Good" Ren understood why. It did not help much.
"What does structural-interest mean?" Kurose answered this time.
"It means the enemy showed interest in how you function under stress, not in your public value. It includes your Quirk status, fragment reports, target protocol behavior, and the object-route attempt inside shelter" Ren's hands warmed more. He opened his fingers. All Might's eyes lowered to them, then back to his face. Ren said "That sounds like a polite way to say specimen" Silence. No one corrected him quickly enough. That was answer. Recovery Girl spoke first.
"That is why I hate the category" Nezu's eyes softened.
"Categories are tools. They are not identities" Ren looked at him.
"I know" Nezu shook his head once.
"No. You understand it. That is not the same thing as knowing it when someone places the tool against your skin" The words slipped past Ren's first layer of control. For one second, he had no answer. Kurose gave him one by not giving him one. Aizawa said "You're a student. The category is for our behavior, not your worth" Ren let out a breath through his nose.
"That sentence also sounds like hostile poetry" Kurose looked at Aizawa. Aizawa said "No" Recovery Girl said "Yes" All Might looked down, shoulders shaking once. Nezu's ears lifted. Ren's hands cooled by a fraction. Human absurdity remained medically useful. Then Nezu opened the folder.
"The immediate restrictions are as follows. Continued secured observation today. Guardian contact under controlled conditions. No unvetted objects. No unsupervised student visits. No public movement. No personal communication device. No media exposure. Limited debrief only. Review tomorrow for possible relocation within campus" Ren's stomach tightened at relocation. Kurose saw.
"Not off-campus. Not yet" That helped. Not enough. Ren nodded. All Might leaned forward.
"You will not be treated as cargo" The sentence came too fast. Too personal. Aizawa looked at him. All Might did not look away from Ren.
"You will be protected. There is a difference. If we start forgetting it, you will tell us" Ren thought about locked rooms, checked hugs, no loose objects, no private phone, no home release.
"I might not notice in time" Kurose said "Then your parents will" Recovery Girl added "And I will bite someone" Aizawa said "She means that legally enough" Nezu said "We have all made a note" Ren breathed. The room felt slightly less airless. Nezu closed the folder.
"Last matter. Questions from other students" Ren looked toward the glass. There were no students outside now. Still, he could feel the hallway.
"What can I say?" Kurose answered "As little as you want""That is not practical""No. But it is a place to start" Aizawa folded his arms.
"If someone asks why you are under guard, say you are under security review after the attack""That makes it sound like I did something""If they're idiots, yes""Aizawa" All Might said softly Aizawa did not apologize. Kurose translated.
"Say I was affected by a classified part of the attack and I am not cleared to discuss details" Ren repeated it in his head. It felt clean. Too clean.
"People will hate that" Kurose said "Some will""Midoriya?" All Might's face changed. The room quieted. Recovery Girl answered.
"Young Midoriya is not asking anyone anything today. He is sedated, stabilized, and lucky I am too busy keeping him alive to scold him properly" Stolen content warning: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences. Ren's palms warmed. Aizawa's voice softened by one degree.
"He saved Kota. He also destroyed himself doing it. Both will be addressed when he can stay awake long enough to be yelled at" All Might's eyes closed briefly. Ren looked at him and saw the wound behind the Symbol. Izuku had chosen movement. Ren had chosen stillness. Both had saved something. Both had cost something. All Might opened his eyes.
"You are not opposites" he said quietly Ren looked down.
"I was thinking it""I know""Is that a teacher thing?" All Might's smile was small and sad.
"No. Regret recognizes itself" No one made a joke after that. The meeting ended ten minutes later. Nezu left to speak with police and the board. All Might left because the Symbol had to appear in a place where cameras could not see how much the night had carved from him. Aizawa remained at the door. Kurose stayed seated. Recovery Girl checked Ren's hands one more time and grunted.
"Cool. Annoyingly healthy""Thank you?"
"Do not sound proud. You are still medically inconvenient" She left too. Aizawa watched the hallway. Then said "Bakugo's briefing is next" Ren looked up.
"He knows?"
"He knows he was targeted. He does not know your classification details. He does not need them" Ren nodded. Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"Do not give them to him because he is angry enough to make you feel obligated" Ren almost smiled.
"Bakugo makes everyone feel something. Obligated is not usually first" Kurose said "Accurate" Aizawa looked tired enough to become transparent.
"He came to see you yesterday""Yes""He said something useful""Yes""Do not make that intimacy" Ren blinked. Kurose covered her mouth with the folder. Aizawa's expression did not change.
"He is a classmate who shared a battlefield and a target pattern. He is not your guard, confessor, or proof that the event has meaning" Ren absorbed that. It was blunt. Necessary. Also horrible.
"He would hate being called my confessor""He can hate it from his own briefing room" Aizawa left. Kurose finally lowered the folder.
"He is not wrong""I know""Do not sound disappointed" Ren looked at her.
"I am not. It is just strange that people can matter without becoming responsible" Kurose's face softened.
"Yes" The sentence stayed with him after she escorted him back to observation room one. People can matter without becoming responsible. He wrote it down before the next meeting could erase it. In another secured room three corridors away, Bakugo Katsuki listened to Nezu explain why the enemy had wanted him. He lasted seventeen seconds before interrupting.
"So they thought I'd join them?" Aizawa stood by the wall. Nezu sat across from Bakugo with a tea cup no one had allowed him to bring until it had been inspected.
"We cannot reduce the motive to one possibility" Bakugo's hands sparked.
"I can. They're idiots" Aizawa said "They almost took you" Bakugo turned on him.
"They didn't""Because your team held you, staff adapted, and you followed instructions just enough not to hand yourself over""Don't make it sound like I was luggage" Nezu's eyes sharpened.
"That is precisely the problem, is it not?" Bakugo went still. Kirishima had asked to be there. Denied. His parents were not in the room yet. That came later. So Bakugo had no one to perform at except adults who had no interest in giving him clean surfaces. Nezu continued "The enemy attempted to convert you from person to symbol. From student to object. From fighter to message. Your anger at the term target is appropriate. Your conclusion that fighting harder is always the answer is not" Bakugo's jaw clenched.
"Are you telling me to stop fighting?"
"No" Aizawa said "I'm telling you to stop helping people carry you away" Bakugo's palms popped. Tiny explosions. Aizawa did not move.
"You chased voices. You nearly broke line twice. You almost blasted your own visual contact" Bakugo opened his mouth. Aizawa cut him off.
"You corrected. That matters. It does not erase the almost" Bakugo looked away. Nezu said "Your group's refusal to let the enemy define the fight prevented your capture. Kirishima held physical line. Sero established visual line. Kaminari adapted output. You changed position and answered count despite hating it" Bakugo muttered "Because it worked""Yes" Nezu said "Humiliating when that happens" Aizawa glanced at him. Bakugo stared.
For one second, it almost looked like he wanted to laugh and bite someone at the same time. Then he sank back into the chair.
"Why me?" Nezu folded his paws.
"Because you are powerful. Because you are visible. Because your public behavior can be misread by people who want heroes to fail. Because if you were taken, the public would imagine a story before U. A. could correct it. Because your anger looks useful to people who do not understand you" Bakugo's eyes lowered. Not soft. Never soft. But something behind the fury shifted.
"They think they know me" Aizawa said "Yes""They don't""No" The answer was immediate. Bakugo looked up. Aizawa held his gaze.
"They don't. Make sure you do not prove their version for them" Bakugo's teeth ground together.
"That supposed to be advice?"
"Yes""It sucks""Yes" Nezu sipped his tea.
"It is also concise" Bakugo glared at him.
"You enjoy this""Not today" That silenced him more effectively than any lecture. Nezu set the cup down.
"Your restrictions. No public statement. No unsupervised movement. No media exposure. No isolated contact with students outside cleared settings. Guardian briefing. Security escort. You will not be placed with Akiyama" Bakugo's head snapped up.
"Why?"
"Two targets in one space increases risk" Bakugo scowled.
"He's not the same kind""No" Nezu said "Which is exactly why stacking you benefits the enemy" Bakugo hated that visibly. Aizawa watched him.
"You are allowed to hate it. You are not allowed to ignore it" Bakugo looked toward the door.
"Is he in some glass box?" Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"He is in secured observation""So yes""Bakugo""What? That's what it is" Nezu's tone remained level.
"It is a protective measure" Bakugo leaned forward.
"It looks like a box from the inside?" No one answered fast enough. Bakugo's mouth twisted.
"Yeah. Thought so" Aizawa said "That does not make you responsible for him""I didn't say it did""You were about to turn it into anger with legs" Bakugo stood. The chair scraped.
"You don't know what I was about to do" Aizawa did not move.
"Yes I do" Bakugo glared. Aizawa continued "You were about to decide that because they wanted you and they wanted him, you can solve both by becoming impossible to take" Bakugo's silence was loud. Nezu said "It is a seductive strategy. Also unreliable" Bakugo's hands sparked again.
"Then what, I sit down and count contacts forever?" Aizawa said "Sometimes" Bakugo looked like the word physically harmed him. Nezu added "Sometimes you fight. Sometimes you hold position. Sometimes you let others hold you in the route. Growth is rarely flattering" Bakugo stared at him.
"I hate all of you" Aizawa said "Still counted" That landed. Bakugo looked away. After a long moment, he muttered "Good" No one asked which part he meant. In observation room one, Ren's first student question arrived through Mina Ashido. Not in person. A recorded hallway message, screened by staff, because U. A. had apparently decided that spontaneous compassion was a controlled substance. Kurose played it only after Ren agreed. Mina appeared on the tablet looking tired, hair slightly flattened, eyes too bright.
"Hey, Akiyama. You don't have to answer. Like, seriously, do not answer if people are being weird. I just wanted to say I'm glad you're here. Also Kaminari says if anyone asks you about marbles, he will throw hands, but Recovery Girl says nobody is throwing anything ever again. So, uh, don't feel weird about being weird? That sounded better in my head. Anyway. Here" The recording ended. Ren stared at the black screen. Kurose said nothing. That was wise.
Ren said "That was very Mina""Yes""I do not know how to respond""You do not have to""I want to" Kurose considered.
"Short response. Cleared category. No details" Ren thought. Then recorded.
"Thank you. I am here. Tell Kaminari no throwing things" He stopped. Then added "I am glad you are here too" Kurose sent it after review. Ren felt ridiculous. Then lighter. Not much. Enough. The next screened message was from Yaoyorozu. She looked composed. Too composed.
"Akiyama. I wanted to inform you that Todoroki and I submitted a joint statement regarding the object-contact incident. We specified that your warning prevented direct student contact, but we also noted that the tray loss was not emotionally neutral for those present. I am aware this is an odd message. I wanted the record to be precise. I hope you are recovering" Ren looked at Kurose.
"She made a report into a welfare check""She is trying" Ren recorded back.
"Thank you. I am glad you included the tray not being neutral. You both changed your first impulse. That mattered" He paused. Then added "I hope you are recovering too" Kurose sent it. The third message was from Uraraka. She did not look composed.
"I don't really know what I'm supposed to say. Deku's still asleep. Kota said he's stupid, so I think he's okay enough to be scary when he wakes up. I just wanted you to know I'm glad you stayed. I mean, not glad like I wanted you trapped there. I mean… you know what I mean. I hope you know what I mean" Ren did. He recorded slowly.
"I know what you mean. I am glad you held your route too. Tell Kota his insult has been received by the relevant parties" Kurose stopped the recording.
"Relevant parties?"
"Too formal?"
"For Uraraka, yes" Ren tried again.
"I know what you mean. I am glad you held your route too. And please tell Kota the angry luggage comment was effective" Kurose sent it. Aizawa would hate that. Good. The messages stopped after three. That was the limit. Ren wanted more. That was exactly why the limit existed. By noon, the public statement was released. Kurose read the official wording aloud because Ren had asked to hear it rather than see headlines.
"At approximately 18: 40 yesterday evening, U. A. students and staff at an off-campus training site came under attack by a hostile villain group. All students have been accounted for. Several students sustained injuries and are receiving care. One member of the Wild Wild Pussycats remains missing following hostile action. U. A. is cooperating with police and pro hero authorities. Further details are withheld to protect minors, staff, and the ongoing investigation" Ren listened. Every sentence was true.
Every sentence was incomplete.
"Again?" Kurose asked"No""Reaction?"
"It sounds clean""Yes""It was not""No""Will people hate it?"
"Yes" Ren looked at his hands. Cool.
"Good" Kurose raised an eyebrow. He explained.
"If they hate it, they noticed something is missing" Kurose sat with that. Then nodded.
"Trustworthy" By afternoon, the board briefing began somewhere Ren was not allowed to go. Nezu attended. Aizawa attended part of it and left before he said something career-ending, according to Present Mic, whose voice reached the hallway briefly before someone shut a door. All Might attended in hero form and said enough, apparently, to make several adults stop talking about risk exposure optics as if children had not been in the forest. Ren heard only pieces. Not details. Pieces were enough. He heard public trust.
He heard camp authorization. He heard why were vulnerable students present. He heard Kurose's voice once, very sharp, through the hall.
"Do not call him an intelligence asset in front of me again" Silence followed. Ren's palms warmed. Not fear. Something else. Shinso, allowed back for a second overlap after lunch, looked toward the door.
"Was that about you?"
"Probably""Good tone""It sounded dangerous""Even better" Ren looked at him.
"You enjoy adults being threatened""Only when they deserve it" Kurose entered five minutes later looking calm in the way people looked calm after choosing violence with grammar. Ren did not ask. She said "You are a student" Ren nodded.
"I know""I was not saying it because you forgot" He looked at her. She placed the folder on the table.
"I was saying it because some adults become stupid near useful children" The sentence sat in the room. Shinso said "That one can go on a card" Kurose looked at him.
"I am one bad meeting away from allowing it" Ren wrote it down. Some adults become stupid near useful children. Kurose saw.
"Do not quote me publicly""I will quote you privately""Acceptable" Then came the briefing Ren had expected and dreaded. Not with the board. With his parents. Hana and Daichi entered after another security check. Hana looked calmer than morning, which meant she had probably screamed somewhere private or had not yet had the opportunity. Daichi carried Bentaro again, orange tag still attached, and a paper cup of coffee approved by three levels of security. He looked offended on behalf of caffeine. Kurose stayed.
Recovery Girl stayed. Aizawa stood outside the glass, visible but not intrusive. Hana sat. Daichi sat. Ren sat across from them with the bolted table between. Hana said "Tell us what you can. Not what they think will make us feel better" Kurose looked at Ren. Ren nodded. He told them. Not everything. Enough. Bakugo had been a major target. Ren had been a different kind of target. The enemy used methods that made objects and contact dangerous. Ragdoll was taken. Ren's fragments and reports were part of why U. A.
was taking the threat seriously, but he could not describe all of them. He did not say structural-interest target until Kurose did. Hana went very still. Daichi's hand closed around Bentaro.
"What does that mean?" Hana asked Ren answered before Kurose could.
"It means they are interested in how I survive stress" The room changed. Hana's face drained. Daichi's voice went low.
"No" Just that. No. It was not denial. It was rejection. A father refusing the shape of a sentence. Kurose said gently "We do not know the full motive" Daichi looked at her.
"But that is the direction""Yes" Hana's hands were flat on the table. Not clenched. Flat. Ren realized she was copying him. Open hands. Visible. Her voice shook once.
"They do not get to turn my son into a research question" Recovery Girl's eyes hardened.
"No. They do not" Ren's palms warmed. Not because of the enemy. Because my son had landed harder than target. Hana looked at him.
"You hear me?" He swallowed.
"Yes""You are not interesting to them in a way that matters more than you are ours" The sentence was messy. Not polished. Better. Ren could not answer. Daichi leaned forward.
"We need rules for home eventually" Kurose nodded.
"We will draft them""No" Daichi said Everyone looked at him. He adjusted his grip on Bentaro.
"You will draft security rules. We will draft home rules" Hana looked at him. Daichi continued "Security says no small objects. Home says he still gets to choose tea if tea is safe. Security says controlled contact. Home says we still ask like family, not guards. Security says visible. Home says visible does not mean displayed" Ren stared at him. Kurose's pen moved quickly. Recovery Girl whispered "Good" Daichi looked embarrassed and angry about being profound. Hana touched his arm.
"Stealing my job again""Marriage" he said Ren's throat hurt. Kurose said "We will include both" That was the first time that day Ren believed a future room might not feel entirely like confiscation. Late afternoon brought Bakugo's parents. Ren did not see them. He heard them. Everyone heard them. A woman's voice, sharp enough to cut concrete.
"What the hell do you mean public-value target?" Bakugo's voice.
"Don't yell that in the hallway!"
"I'll yell wherever I want when villains try to steal my kid!" A man's quieter voice.
"Mitsuki, maybe inside voice""No!" Then Bakugo again, furious and young in a way he rarely allowed.
"I didn't get stolen!" His mother's voice cracked through anger.
"Yeah. I noticed. That's why I can yell at you" Silence. Then something softer Ren could not hear. Kurose closed the observation door gently. Ren looked at her. She said "That is theirs" He nodded. Not his door. But the hallway still carried the feeling of it. Public target did not mean public grief. By evening, Ren was allowed one more screened message. This one came from Bakugo. Not video. Text. Probably because Bakugo would rather swallow glass than record a welfare message.
It read: If anyone calls me angry luggage again, I'm blaming you. Ren stared. Then laughed. Not almost. Actually. It surprised him enough that his palms warmed. Kurose looked in from the hall. Ren lifted one hand.
"Humor spike. No danger" She looked at the tablet. Her mouth twitched.
"What will you reply?" Ren thought. Then typed: I will deny involvement. Poorly. He sent it. The response came three minutes later. Good. You're bad at lying. Ren smiled again. Then the next line arrived. Don't get boxed. Ren's smile faded. He typed: Don't get carried. This time, the answer took longer. Yeah. One word. No insult. No explosion. No comfort. Enough. Ren placed the tablet down. The room had no corners for dreams, but the day had found places to put people anyway. Bakugo behind anger.
Shinso behind sarcasm. Hana behind rules she hated. Daichi behind practical questions. Kurose behind controlled fury. All Might behind the Symbol. Aizawa behind bluntness. Kota behind insults. Ragdoll behind absence. Ren opened his chart. He wrote: Formal classifications. Bakugo: public-value target. Ren: classified structural-interest target. Ragdoll: missing staff, likely captured. Public statement clean but incomplete. Students asked through screened messages. Some care can be limited and still real.
Parents reject specimen framing. Home rules must exist alongside security rules. Bakugo text: do not get boxed. Reply: do not get carried. He paused. Then added: Public target means everyone may look. Classified target means almost no one may ask. Both are cages if the person disappears inside the category. He read the line. It was too neat. Maybe true anyway. Shinso would call it dangerously essay-like. Kurose would probably approve. Aizawa would tell him not to become poetry. Ren kept it. Outside, U. A.'
s gates stayed crowded. Inside, the categories held. Not identities. Tools. Tools could protect. Tools could cut. Ren placed both hands open beside the chart. Cool. Empty. His. For tonight, that had to be enough.
