Chương 93: Secured Is Not Safe

U. A.' s secured medical intake did not look like rescue. That was the first thing Ren noticed. It looked like lights. White lights over a covered entrance. Blue guide strips on the floor. Staff in medical coats and security uniforms moving in crossing lines that never quite touched. Stretchers. Clipboards. Doors that opened only after someone said a name and someone else confirmed it. Students moving in groups that had once been classes and were now categories. Critical. Smoke exposure. Irritant exposure.
Target protocol. Witness. Staff injury. Guardian contact pending. Missing staff. Ragdoll's absence arrived with them. Not physically. That was the point. It came in the way Mandalay stopped speaking whenever someone said complete roster. It came in the way Tiger's hands stayed half-curled after he helped transfer Midoriya's stretcher.
It came in the way Pixie-Bob looked ready to tear the medical bay doors off their hinges and had to be guided toward a staff debrief room by two people who clearly did not believe they could stop her if she decided otherwise. It came in the red line on Arai's copied map, folded inside Kurose's folder. RAGDOLL MISSING — TAKEN The convoy stopped. The doors opened. No smoke entered. Ren still reported.
"Yellow-red. Intake arrival. Palms warm. No ridging. No lattice. No image. Door opening trigger mild" Kurose stood outside the transport before he stepped down.
"Accepted. Stand" He stood. Shinso stepped down after him, not before, because awareness support did not become shield unless ordered. Arai followed with the route packet held in both hands. Kenta checked the ground before anyone asked. Sano had no cards, which made him look unfinished and maybe safer. The intake floor was clean. No pebbles. No spheres. No unknown objects. A security officer scanned the ground anyway. Ren watched. No heat spike. Good.
Aizawa stood near the entrance with one sleeve torn and a dark bruise already forming along his jaw. He looked like a man who had lost an argument with an entire forest and intended to file a complaint against geography later. His eyes counted them.
"Akiyama""Here""Shinso""Here""Arai""Here""Kenta""Here""Sano""Here" Sano's voice shook. Aizawa's gaze stayed on him for one second.
"Good" Sano looked like the word nearly knocked him over. Then Aizawa turned to Ren.
"Target protocol continues inside. You are not isolated. You are not stacked with Bakugo. You are not placed near medical critical unless called. You remain visible to staff" Ren nodded.
"Status yellow-red. Accepted" Recovery Girl's voice came from inside the intake before her body appeared.
"Stop accepting things like a funeral bell and move" She emerged through the automatic doors in a white coat, shorter than everyone around her and somehow the center of the hallway anyway. Her eyes went first to Midoriya's stretcher as it passed, then to Ren's hands, then to Bakugo two vehicles away, then to Aizawa's bleeding jaw, then back to Midoriya because priority did not ask permission from worry.
"Midoriya to trauma bay two. Bakugo to decontam and examination three. Akiyama to observation room one under target protocol. Shinso to smoke and Quirk-use check after escort handoff. No one argues unless they want sedation in spirit" Kaminari, being wheeled past under a blanket, whispered "Can spirit sedation be prescribed?" Jiro, walking beside his chair with irritated affection, said "For you, necessary" Recovery Girl pointed without looking.
"Kaminari. Breathing first. Comedy later""Yes ma'am" Ren stepped inside. The doors closed behind him with a soft mechanical seal. His palms warmed. Moderate.
"Door seal trigger. Palms moderate. No image. No lattice. Request visible check" Arai, beside him, answered before staff did.
"Floor clear. No small objects. Vents fixed. Doors controlled. Windows reinforced. Students visible. Staff visible. No one alone" Kurose looked at her.
"Good" Arai blinked. Then nodded once, as if praise had been classified and stored. Ren's heat decreased. Observation room one was not a hospital room. It was a room designed to prevent a person from disappearing. That was worse. Glass wall on one side. No loose objects. Built-in seating. Bolted table. Sealed vent panel. Medical monitor already attached to a rolling stand. Two exits, both visible from the central chair. Security camera in the corner. Blue tape on the floor marking safe approach lanes.
Nothing small enough to roll. Target protocol had traveled faster than them. Ren stood at the threshold and disliked every inch of it. Kurose noticed.
"Status""Yellow-red. Room designed around capture prevention. Palms warm. No image. Emotional response: objectified" Recovery Girl, who had followed them, snapped "Accurate. Also necessary" Ren looked at her.
"I know""Good. Sit anyway" He sat. The chair had a back. Of course it did. Recovery Girl took his hands without warning, then paused before contact. Her face tightened.
"Permission for medical examination" The pause struck harder than the touch would have. Ren swallowed.
"Yes" She took his hands. Her fingers were cool and professional. She checked palms, skin, tendons, old scars, heat distribution, capillary refill, small tremor. Then forearms. Then pulse. Then eyes. Then breathing.
"No lattice""No""No ridging""No""No hidden activation signs""No""Pain besides heat?"
"No""Lying?"
"No" Her eyes narrowed.
"Good. I believe that because your answers are boring" Kurose wrote. Shinso, standing near the glass with Aizawa, muttered "Boring is medical praise now" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"Yes. Try it sometime" Shinso shut his mouth. She turned back to Ren.
"You are not cleared to sleep without monitoring tonight. You are not cleared to be alone. You are not cleared for debrief longer than fifteen minutes without reassessment. You are not cleared to convert survival into analysis for emotional self-harm" Ren paused.
"That last category seems broad""It is""Understood" Aizawa entered only after Recovery Girl stepped back. He did not sit. He looked at Ren as if checking whether the boy in front of him matched the one from the hall, the deck, the bus, the trial run of every rule that had been written because someone had expected him to break in predictable ways.
"You stayed in protocol" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes""You requested removal from relay before activation""Yes""You did not move toward Midoriya, Kota, Bakugo, Ragdoll, or the object" Each name landed. Ren kept his hands open.
"Yes" Aizawa's jaw flexed.
"Good" The word hurt again. Ren said "Ragdoll was still taken""Yes""I warned too late" Aizawa's eyes sharpened.
"Wrong" Ren looked up. Aizawa's voice did not rise.
"You warned when you had data. Ragdoll was taken before the object route was understood. Your job is not retroactive omniscience" Ren's hands warmed. Not heat. Shame. Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. Maybe both.
"Status. Failure association. Palms mild increase. No image" Recovery Girl said "Good. Say the correction" Ren closed his eyes.
"I am not responsible for data I did not have before I had it" Kurose wrote the sentence down. Aizawa nodded once.
"You will hate that sentence. Keep it" Shinso whispered from the glass "Ugly line" Ren opened his eyes.
"Yes""Keep it" The room held. Then the guardian call became guardian arrival. Hana arrived at U. A. like fear had learned to walk quickly without running. Daichi came beside her with Bentaro under one arm despite there being no rain, because some objects survived by refusing relevance. They were stopped at three security points before reaching the protected waiting corridor, and Ren saw each point through the glass before they saw him. Hana's face when she found him was worse than any smoke. Relief first.
Then inventory. Hands. Face. Chest. Visible blood. None. Then the glass. Then Kurose. Then Recovery Girl. Then the empty room around him. Then the truth that a room could be designed to keep her son from being taken. Her hand went to her mouth. Daichi's grip tightened around Bentaro's handle until the old umbrella creaked. Ren stood before anyone told him not to. Recovery Girl said "Slowly" He stopped.
"Status. Guardian visual. Palms warm. No lattice. Emotional spike. Request approach?" Recovery Girl looked at the security officer. Then at Kurose. Kurose said "Controlled guardian contact. No loose objects. No unsupervised physical contact until check" Hana's eyes flashed.
"Unsupervised physical contact?" Kurose did not flinch.
"He was targeted by a contact-capture method. We need to prevent object transfer, unknown contact items, and panic movement. This is not mistrust of you" Hana inhaled. Once. Twice. Then placed her bag on the security table without being asked. Daichi placed Bentaro beside it with visible pain.
"Bentaro complies" No one laughed. Ren almost did. Almost became crying. Hana removed her rings. Daichi emptied his pockets. Security scanned both. No small objects. No loose items. No unknown contact. Then the door opened. Hana stepped in. Stopped one pace away. The distance was worse than touch.
"Can I hug you?" Ren's voice failed once. Then worked.
"Yes" She hugged him carefully because careful had become the shape of love under protocol. Daichi stood behind her, one hand hovering, waiting until Hana released him before stepping in. Then he hugged Ren too, not pretending it was a strap adjustment this time. Ren's hands closed against his father's back. Recovery Girl's voice cut through.
"Hands" He opened them immediately.
"Sorry. Reflex. No heat spike" Daichi stepped back.
"No sorry before alive" Hana made a sound. Ren looked at her.
"I am alive" She nodded too quickly.
"I know""I did not activate""I know""I stayed visible" Her face broke.
"I know" Daichi looked at the room. Then at Kurose.
"How serious?" Kurose did not soften it.
"Serious. Ren was identified as a secondary target during the attack. The primary student target appears to have been Bakugo. Ren's status is classified as targeted due to unknown hostile interest and an attempted contact-capture route inside the shelter" Hana's face went white. Daichi's hand found Bentaro's absence and closed on air. Ren said "I was not taken" Hana looked at him sharply.
"That is not enough" The words hit the room. Not cruel. True. Ren nodded.
"No" Daichi's voice was quiet.
"But it is where we start" Ren looked at him. Route back counts. Yes. Hana wiped her face once, angrily.
"What can we know?" Kurose glanced at Aizawa. Aizawa answered.
"What you need for safety. Not everything. Not yet. Contact-capture method involved small unknown objects. No touching unknown items. No accepting objects from unverified people. No isolation. Secure transport only. Guardian home protocol will be provided if and when he is released from campus medical observation" Hana looked at Ren.
"You are not coming home tonight" Recovery Girl answered.
"No" Hana closed her eyes. Daichi looked down. Bentaro, abandoned outside the room, was not available to absorb the moment. Ren said "Medical observation is correct" Hana opened her eyes.
"I hate correct" Shinso, still outside the glass because guardian contact had not included him, whispered "Common theme" Hana turned. Saw him. Something in her face changed.
"Are you hurt?" Shinso looked startled.
"Smoke exposure mild. No major injury. Quirk use authorized once. Social debt low because survival category overrides soup" Hana stared. Then her face crumpled in the smallest possible way.
"Good" Shinso looked down. Daichi, through the open door, said "Soup remains not a contract" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"I know""Good" The door closed again because protocol still existed. Hana sat only after Recovery Girl told her sitting near Ren was allowed. Allowed. The word entered the family like a bruise. Ren watched his mother accept it because not accepting it would make safety worse. That was another form of love. A terrible one. After ten minutes, the debrief began because time had become triage. Not the classified debrief. The human one. Ren told his parents the safe version. There was an attack. Students were evacuated.
Midoriya was alive but badly hurt. Bakugo was targeted but not taken. Ragdoll was taken. Ren was identified as a target but remained under protocol. He did not reveal full fragments. He did not explain impossible images. He did not name villains he did not know. He did not describe Ragdoll becoming a sphere because Mandalay had not consented to that grief becoming family knowledge, and because not every truth he saw became his to give away. Hana listened with both hands clasped so tightly the knuckles went white.
Daichi asked practical questions. Transport. Security. Observation. Food. Medication. Sleep. Release timeline. Every practical question kept him from shattering. Ren loved him for that. Hana asked only one question after the first wave.
"When you knew you were targeted, did you want to run?" Ren looked at the floor.
"Yes" Her breath hitched.
"Did you?"
"No" She closed her eyes. Daichi whispered "Good" Ren's throat tightened.
"It did not feel good" Hana opened her eyes.
"Most good things aren't" The old sentence returned like a hand on the back. Not pushing. Holding. Recovery Girl ended the guardian contact at fifteen minutes with no mercy and no apology.
"Enough. He needs monitoring and you need separate briefing" Hana looked ready to fight her. Recovery Girl looked ready to win. Daichi stood first.
"Hana" She stood. Slowly. At the door, she turned.
"Hands open if needed" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Daichi said "Come home angry" Ren tried to smile.
"Eventually" Hana's face changed at eventually. Then she nodded because the word was honest. They left for the guardian briefing room. Bentaro was returned to Daichi outside the door. He checked the hinge once. No one commented. When the door sealed again, Ren sat back down. The room felt larger and worse. Shinso was allowed in next for his medical check because Kurose argued that awareness support and smoke exposure could be handled in the same room if both students consented and no loose objects entered.
Recovery Girl grumbled but allowed it. Shinso sat across from Ren, not beside. He looked like exhaustion had hollowed out his sarcasm and left the frame standing.
"Status?" he asked Ren answered.
"Yellow-red. Guardian contact. Target briefing partial. No heat spike. No lattice. Emotional overload contained badly" Shinso nodded.
"Good""Your status?"
"Yellow-red. Smoke exposure mild. Quirk use authorized. Regret about ball comment still present. Hana asked if I was hurt and that was worse than smoke" Ren's chest hurt.
"No contract""I know" They sat. Kurose wrote. Recovery Girl checked Shinso's lungs and eyes.
"No serious irritant injury. Voice rest if coughing worsens. No Quirk use without clearance" Shinso said "I was not planning recreational Brainwashing""Good. Boring""Medical praise""Correct" Aizawa entered again. This time with Nezu. The room changed. It always did. Nezu's expression held sorrow in a shape too intelligent to waste. His fur was immaculate. His eyes were not. All Might came behind him in hero form, large enough to fill the doorway and quiet enough that he seemed smaller than usual.
He did not deflate. Not here. Not with parents nearby, students nearby, cameras possibly in secure hallways, and too many secrets already bleeding. Ren's posture changed before he could stop it. All Might saw. His face softened for one second. Then became the Symbol because the Symbol was still a tool and tools mattered during disasters. Nezu spoke first.
"Akiyama" Ren opened his hands.
"Status yellow-red. Nezu and All Might arrival. Palms warm. No lattice. No image" Nezu nodded.
"Thank you. This will be brief" Recovery Girl said "It had better be" Nezu did not look offended.
"Immediate classification. The attack had multiple objectives. Public student target: Bakugo Katsuki. Confirmed by hostile behavior, capture pattern, and field reports. Secondary classified target: you. Confirmed by object-route attempt inside shelter, your direct fragment report, and hostile reaction pattern. Staff target of opportunity or planned degradation: Ragdoll. Her capture has removed a critical search asset" The words entered one by one. Public target. Secondary classified target. Staff target.
Planned degradation. Ren swallowed.
"Classified target means my parents cannot know full basis" Kurose looked at him.
"Correct. They will know safety instructions and that hostile interest exists" Ren nodded.
"Good" All Might's hands clenched. A small motion. Almost hidden. Ren saw. Nezu continued "Your role during the attack will be reviewed carefully. Initial assessment indicates your reporting materially reduced the probability of Bakugo's capture and prevented at least one contact-capture event inside the shelter. It did not prevent Ragdoll's capture" No false comfort. Good. Cruel. Good. Ren said "Both lines remain" Nezu's eyes sharpened.
"Yes. Both lines remain" All Might finally spoke. His voice was lower than television.
"You stayed" Ren looked at him. The Symbol's face held too much.
"Yes""You stayed when Young Midoriya was in danger""Yes""You stayed when Young Bakugo was in danger""Yes""You stayed when you were named" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes" All Might bowed his head. Not deeply. Enough.
"That was heroism" Ren's hands warmed. Not Scar Tissue. Something worse.
"I was seated" All Might looked at him.
"Yes""I did not fight""Yes""I did not save Ragdoll" All Might's eyes changed.
"No" The room held the word. No. Ren looked down. All Might continued "Heroism did not make the outcome whole. It almost never does" That sounded like something learned late. Ren remembered. Learn earlier than me if you can. He whispered "I hate that" All Might said "So do I" Nezu allowed the silence for exactly two seconds. Then returned to structure.
"Going forward, we assume hostile interest may continue. We also assume the enemy has learned from this failure" Failure. Ren looked up. Nezu saw the reaction.
"From their perspective. They failed to capture Bakugo. They failed to capture you. They succeeded in taking Ragdoll. They exposed a method. They learned about our response. We learned about theirs. This is not an end state" The room cooled around that. Not safe. Never safe. Aizawa said "Target protocol remains. You will not return to normal classes until security review" Ren nodded.
"Expected" Recovery Girl added "You will not return to training until medical review""Expected" Kurose said "You will not become a walking classified report" Ren paused. That one hit differently.
"What does that mean?"
"It means people will ask. Some because they care. Some because they are afraid. Some because rumors have teeth. You will answer within cleared categories. You will not bleed yourself into public explanation because you think it will make the room safer" Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso's face said nothing. His presence said enough. Ren nodded.
"Accepted" Nezu stood.
"One more thing. Ragdoll's capture is not on your conscience" Ren's chest tightened. Nezu's voice remained gentle and merciless.
"It may be in your grief. It may be in your memory. It may be in your future caution. It is not on your conscience" Ren could not answer. Recovery Girl did for him.
"He will need to repeat that for weeks""Likely" Nezu said All Might looked at Ren one last time.
"You are alive" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Stay that way without making alive a debt" The sentence hit the guardian call, Shinso's chair, Hana's hands, Daichi's umbrella, Kota's question, Bakugo's glare, Midoriya's broken smile, Ragdoll's red line on the map. Alive without debt. Impossible. Necessary.
"I will try" All Might nodded.
"For tonight, that is enough" They left. The room did not become lighter. Only less full. Shinso leaned back in his chair.
"Alive without debt is a worse line than all the others" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes""Keep it?"
"Yes""Unfortunately" Later, after scans, after another palm check, after Recovery Girl declared his body stable enough to remain under observation and unstable enough to make her angry at biology, Ren was allowed to write the final chart entry of the day. He wrote slowly. U. A. medical intake. Target protocol continues. Guardian contact completed. Parents informed safe categories. Shinso alive. Soup remains not contract. Midoriya alive, critical. Bakugo alive, elevated target. Ragdoll missing, likely captured.
Ren classified secondary target. No Scar Tissue activation. No unreported heat. No movement outside assigned route. Failure association present. Debt association present. He stopped. The last line took a long time. Alive is not a debt, but tonight it feels like one. He stared at it. Shinso read it from across the room. For once, he did not say good immediately. He waited. Then said "Trustworthy" Ren looked up. Shinso's eyes were tired.
"Not good. Trustworthy" Ren breathed. That was better. Outside the observation room, U. A. moved around them like a fortress discovering its walls had shadows. Parents waited. Teachers briefed. Police asked questions. Doctors worked. News vans gathered beyond gates without knowing enough to deserve the words they wanted. Somewhere inside the building, Midoriya remained alive. Somewhere else, Bakugo shouted at someone and proved the same. Somewhere beyond U. A., Ragdoll was missing.
And somewhere Ren could not see, someone had learned that he could stay seated while burning. Ren placed both hands flat on the chart. No ridges. No lattice. Warm. Open. For tonight, secured did not mean safe. It only meant the count had reached a room with locks. And the locks were listening now too.
