Chương 113: The Word Mine Waits

Ren saw the sign before he saw the bed. That was probably intentional. R-2 had not changed much. The door still opened from outside after checks. The window was still sealed. The tea station was still bolted. The shelf still held Bentaro's portrait, the family photograph, and the large approved objects that made security look like it had lost arguments to ordinary love. The wall panel still declared, with stubborn authority, that the room was not in charge.
THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE But beneath it, taped with medical-safe adhesive and surrounded by enough visible approval stamps to make the absurdity official, Mina's sign waited in block letters large enough to offend every minimalist principle in U. A. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST Under it, in Shinso's tighter handwriting, also large enough to pass safety review: ROOM STILL ON PROBATION And beside both, printed on a separate reinforced card because nobody trusted Bakugo near wall markers: Machine lost. Ren stared.
The transfer chair stopped just inside the room. Recovery Girl stood at his right side, one hand on the chair's control. Dr. Seno stood behind her with the portable monitor. Kurose stayed on his left. Hana and Daichi stood in the doorway because Recovery Girl had threatened the entire concept of family if anyone crowded him during the first room re-entry. Ren read the signs again. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST ROOM STILL ON PROBATION Machine lost. His chest hurt. Not graft. Not fever. Something worse and better.
He made a sound that began as a laugh and came out broken halfway through. Recovery Girl looked down at him.
"Do not emotionally overuse signage" Ren tried to answer. Failed. Tried again.
"Terrible" Kurose's eyes softened.
"Yes""Trustworthy""Yes" Hana pressed both hands over her mouth. Daichi looked at the signs with solemn respect.
"The room has received corrective feedback" Recovery Girl said "The room has received vandalism with forms attached" Kurose said "Approved vandalism" Ren looked at the Bakugo card. Machine lost.
"Did Bakugo approve this?" Kurose's mouth twitched.
"He sent it as a message. Mina requested permission to print it. Aizawa approved it without admitting he approved it" Ren blinked slowly.
"Aizawa approved wall aggression""Under protest""Everything he does is under protest" Daichi said "Healthy posture" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Do not encourage staff modeling" The signs blurred. Ren closed his eyes before tears could become a report. The room smelled faintly of tea and medical disinfectant. Not the lab. Not fully home. Something between. A room that knew he had been taken from one kind of protection and returned to another kind that would have to prove itself now. A room that had waited without becoming a shrine. That mattered. Kurose crouched beside the chair so he did not have to look up.
"You can choose bed, chair, or back to medical isolation" Ren opened his eyes.
"Choice real?"
"Yes""Limits?"
"Bed or chair only if vitals stay within range. Back to isolation if fever spikes, graft function misfires globally, or you ask""Door?"
"Controlled, but request panel active. If you press it, a person answers before any mechanism opens""Who?"
"Assigned staff. Today me, Recovery Girl, or Seno" Ren looked at the request button near the bed. Still there. Not glowing like a trap. Just waiting. His hands were cool, mostly. Pale lines slept under his skin, faint around left forearm and right shoulder. Graft Lattice did not show unless stress or movement stirred it, but the knowledge of it sat under every inch of him. One evolved Quirk with graft-derived functions. Foreign functions. Contained. Borrowed. Integrated by survival. Under protest.
The word mine waited somewhere he refused to enter.
"Bed" he said Recovery Girl nodded.
"Slow transfer. You do not help unless told. If your heroic instincts twitch, I will blame the signage" Ren almost smiled. All Might was not there. That mattered too. He had wanted to come. Ren knew because everyone had wanted to come and most of them had been stopped. Recovery Girl had declared the room re-entry a low-crowd procedure, which apparently meant only a doctor, a homeroom teacher, parents in doorway, one old nurse with terrifying sovereignty, and signs made by emotionally unstable students.
Ren was moved from the transfer chair to the bed slowly enough that the room had time to become real one piece at a time. Mattress. Pillow. Right shoulder support. Left wrist cushion. Blanket. Monitor line. No restraints. Sensor bands. Not restraints. He checked twice. Recovery Girl saw.
"Sensor band" Ren nodded.
"Not strap""Correct" Kurose added "If it begins feeling like a strap, we change it" He looked at her. She meant it. Good. The bed held. Bad chairs were traitors. Beds were more complicated. Ren leaned back and stared at the ceiling. R-2's ceiling looked ordinary. After the lab, ordinary seemed suspiciously generous. Hana entered only when Recovery Girl jerked her chin in grudging permission.
Daichi followed, carrying nothing because Bentaro remained outside the room for now, allegedly to avoid crowding and definitely because security feared losing another umbrella argument. Hana stopped beside the bed.
"Warm or cold?" Ren looked down at his hands. The left one hurt. The right shoulder hummed with low pain behind the new gate. Fever sat beneath the skin, lower than before. Repair warmth stirred when he breathed too deeply.
"Warm" Hana nodded.
"Then warm" Daichi looked at the bed frame.
"Holding?" Ren swallowed.
"Yes""Traitorous?"
"Not yet""Good. We monitor" Recovery Girl sighed.
"The furniture review is not part of my chart" Kurose said "It is part of his" Recovery Girl glared at her. Kurose looked back calmly.
"Medical first does not mean medical only" For a moment, Recovery Girl looked like she wanted to argue. Then she looked at Ren, at the signs, at Hana's hand hovering near the blanket, at Daichi's fingers flexing because he wanted to hold something and was choosing not to without permission.
"Fine" she said "Furniture review may exist in a separate emotional appendix" Daichi nodded. The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Acceptable" Ren closed his eyes. The room was full of people fighting over stupid things so the serious things did not swallow him whole. That was love, apparently. Annoying. Useful. The first hour in R-2 was not restful. Everyone pretended it might be. It was not. Rest was difficult when his body kept discovering itself differently. If he shifted his right shoulder too far, pain rose, then lowered at the edge without asking.
If he clenched his left hand, pale lines flickered near the graft boundary, not full Scar Lattice, not the old Scar Tension, but something finer, layered beneath the skin like a warning written in tissue. If his pulse jumped when a sound came from the hall, Repair Scaffold warmed where the extraction had strained him, as if preparing for damage before damage arrived. His body had become anticipatory. He hated that. He needed it. That contradiction sat beside him like another visitor. Dr.
Seno checked the monitor and spoke only after turning the display slightly away from him.
"Graft Lattice remains quiescent at rest. Minor pain modulation around the shoulder. Repair scaffold low-level maintenance only. Scar containment stable" Recovery Girl grunted.
"Translation. Boring enough to continue being annoying" Ren opened one eye.
"Boring?"
"Medically desirable""Emotionally offensive""Good. Stay offended and alive" Kurose sat at the desk with no folder open. That was clearly on purpose. Her hands were folded around nothing. She watched the room more than the monitor, which made Ren feel safer and more exposed at the same time. Hana finally asked the question she had been holding.
"Does it feel like them?" The room became careful. Ren looked at his left arm. Pain modulation graft. Repair scaffold graft. Foreign functions. Scar Tissue channels.
"No" Hana breathed out. Not relief. Not exactly. He continued "It feels like my body built walls around tools that were left inside a wound" Daichi's face tightened. Hana sat down slowly. Dr. Seno looked at him.
"That is medically imprecise but conceptually accurate" Recovery Girl muttered "Better than half your reports" Ren looked at Dr. Seno.
"They are not separate anymore?" Dr. Seno chose her words carefully.
"They are no longer behaving like independent Quirk factors diffusing through your system. Scar Tissue has incorporated their useful mechanisms into controlled channels. Pain modulation is gated by Scar Tissue. Repair scaffold is limited by Scar Tissue. Both appear dependent on your original Quirk's boundary and stress-routing system" Ren stared at the blanket.
"So Garaki succeeded""No" Kurose said The word snapped through the room. Ren looked at her. Kurose stood now. She had not meant to. She stayed standing.
"He forced a biological event. He did not succeed at owning its meaning" Ren's throat tightened. Dr. Seno nodded.
"Scientifically, he proved compatibility was possible under monstrous conditions. That does not mean he achieved what he wanted" Ren whispered "He wanted operational function before identity" Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened. Kurose's face went pale again. Daichi's hand closed. Hana's voice was low.
"What does that mean?" Ren tried to answer. Words lined up and collapsed. Garaki's voice. All For One's. A weapon need not feel owned by the hand to cut. Survival function. Trigger quality. Borrowed function. His pulse rose. The monitor noticed. Recovery Girl leaned forward.
"No full explanation now" Ren shook his head.
"Need to—""No. You need to not turn every remembered knife into a spoken object before your fever drops" Kurose stepped closer.
"You already discharged the urgent terms. We have them" His eyes searched her face.
"All?"
"We have what you gave. If more comes, it can wait unless it is immediate danger" Immediate danger. Kamino pressed behind his eyes. Not now. Not this hour. He looked toward the doorway. No All Might. Good. Bad.
"Not immediate" he said Kurose watched him.
"You are sure?" No.
"Yes" Recovery Girl looked like she did not believe him and also like she accepted the answer because belief was not consent.
"Then it waits" The word waits joined mine somewhere inside him. Crowded place. Later, after Hana and Daichi were ordered out for food and rest under protest, and Dr. Seno left to compare scans, Kurose stayed with Ren while Recovery Girl checked supplies in the adjoining medical room. The door remained open. That mattered. Kurose sat in the heavy chair near the shelf. Ren looked at the shelf instead of her. Bentaro's portrait. Family photo. No shrine. No candles. No tragic arrangement.
Just objects too large to steal easily and too loved to ignore. He asked "Students?" Kurose's mouth softened.
"Contained""That is not reassuring""Correct. They are contained badly""Bakugo?"
"Approved wall pad remains in service" Ren closed his eyes.
"Good""Midoriya is awake and not cleared to move. He knows you are alive. Inko cried. He cried. Then he tried to apologize and was stopped by three people" Ren breathed.
"Good""Shinso requested to sit in the hall outside R-2 and say nothing" Ren opened his eyes.
"Approved?"
"Not yet""Why?"
"Because Recovery Girl says your monitor does interpret Shinso silence as an event" Ren's mouth twitched.
"It does""I know" Kurose leaned back.
"He made another sign proposal""What says?"
"Not a storage closet" Ren stared. Then laughed. The laugh hurt his ribs. Pain rose. Pain modulation lowered it too fast. Panic flickered. Kurose stopped smiling immediately. Ren gripped the sheet.
"Still here""Still here" The pain returned in enough places. He breathed.
"Sign rejected?"
"Deferred""Why?"
"Because Aizawa said the room did not need more opinions until morning" Ren nodded weakly.
"Aizawa is wrong""He often is under protest" The room settled. For a while, neither spoke. Then Ren said "Kurose" She looked at him.
"I remember your hand slipping" Her face changed. Pain crossed it nakedly before she could stop it. He continued because stopping now would make the memory worse.
"It was one centimeter" Kurose closed her eyes.
"Ren""You held" Her mouth trembled. His voice was hoarse.
"Garaki showed the video. All For One said you failed to hold me" Kurose opened her eyes. The temperature in her face vanished.
"He said that to you?" Ren nodded once. The monitor ticked upward. Kurose stood, then deliberately sat back down because the movement had been too sharp.
"He lied" Ren swallowed.
"I know""Do you?"
"Yes" She leaned forward.
"We held as long as physics and a stolen spatial Quirk allowed. Then they stole you. That is not failure. That is crime" His eyes burned.
"They used that too""I know""They used voices""I know""They used you" Kurose's hands shook. She placed them flat on her knees.
"Then let this version replace that one. I held. Recovery Girl held. Aizawa moved. They stole. We came" The words were plain. Almost too plain. That made them stronger. Ren repeated softly "You held. They stole. You came" Kurose nodded.
"Yes" The monitor slowed. Not much. Enough. Recovery Girl appeared in the doorway.
"Good sentence. Annoyingly therapeutic. Do not overuse it until fever lowers" Kurose wiped her face with one hand.
"Yes, ma'am" Recovery Girl squinted.
"I dislike your sudden obedience" Kurose said "Temporary symptom" Ren's eyes drifted closed. He held onto the sentence. You held. They stole. You came. The afternoon brought controlled contact. Not visits. Recovery Girl refused the word visits at first because visits implied people could behave like people and apparently that was medically risky. Kurose argued that calling them controlled contact intervals made Ren sound like a dangerous aquarium animal.
Recovery Girl said dangerous aquarium animals had better compliance. Dr. Seno said terminology mattered. Recovery Girl told her to stop agreeing usefully. In the end, the first interval was audio-only. Midoriya. Ren looked at the tablet mounted on the side stand and felt his pulse climb before the call connected. Recovery Girl pointed at the monitor.
"If either of you starts apologizing competitively, I end the call" Kurose added "This is not a guilt exchange" Ren whispered "Understood" The call clicked on. For one second, only breathing. Then Midoriya's voice, weak and thick.
"Akiyama?" Ren closed his eyes.
"Midoriya" A quiet sound came through. Maybe a sob. Maybe a laugh. Maybe both.
"You're alive""Yes""I'm alive too""I heard""I'm not supposed to apologize""Me neither" Silence. Then Midoriya gave a wet, broken laugh.
"We are very bad at this" Ren's mouth trembled.
"Confirmed" Recovery Girl leaned closer to the tablet.
"You have four minutes and zero dramatic self-blame credits" Midoriya sniffed.
"Yes, ma'am" Inko's voice came faintly in the background.
"Listen to her" Ren asked "Kota?"
"He called me stupid again""Good""He asked if you were stupid too""Correct answer?"
"I said yes""Trustworthy" Midoriya cried then. Quietly. Trying not to make it a problem. Ren listened. His chest hurt with the need to say too much. Lab. grafts. pain missing. old voice. Kamino. Your father maybe a monster. No. Not his door. Not now. Never like this. Instead he said "You came back for Kota" Midoriya's breath caught. Ren continued "I stayed. They stole me later. Those are separate events" Midoriya was silent. Recovery Girl looked sharply at Ren but did not stop him.
Midoriya whispered "I know""Do you?" A small laugh.
"No""Me neither" They sat with that. Bad at it at the same time. The call ended after four minutes and fifteen seconds because Recovery Girl was merciful in ways she denied. Ren slept for twenty-three minutes afterward. His fever dropped by point-two degrees. Recovery Girl wrote down nothing about emotional utility. Kurose saw her not writing it down. Neither commented. The second contact interval was text-only. Bakugo.
The message arrived through Kurose's tablet after several layers of review, probably because everyone feared what Bakugo would consider comforting. It read: Machine lost. Don't let the room claim overtime. Ren stared at it for a long time. Then typed with his left hand, slowly, Kurose holding the tablet steady but not touching his fingers. Room remains on probation. The answer returned three minutes later. Good. Beat it administratively. Ren smiled. Pain rose. Pain lowered. He breathed through the panic.
Still here. The third contact was not with Shinso. Not yet. Recovery Girl had decided Shinso's silence was too emotionally loud and Shinso had accepted that by saying "Stupid but medically annoying enough to be true" Instead, he sent a single approved line. You do not have to make the new things useful before you hate them. Ren read it once. Twice. A third time. Then covered his eyes with his left hand. Kurose did not ask.
Recovery Girl pretended not to notice the monitor spike because some readings deserved privacy. Ren replied later. Good line. Unfortunately yours. Shinso answered: Deny everything. Ren saved it. Evening brought Nezu. He remained at the threshold again until Ren invited him in, and even then he climbed only onto the chair nearest the door, not the one near the bed. Ren appreciated that more than he wanted to. Nezu looked tired. That was alarming on an animal who usually made tired look like strategy.
"We recovered several data fragments from the trauma rehabilitation center" Ren looked at him. Recovery Girl said "Careful" Nezu nodded.
"I will not ask him to supply context. I am telling him what his words helped us understand" That distinction mattered. Ren stayed awake. Nezu continued "Archive Node Four was real. Cleared, but real. The word Shock appears tied to a pediatric Quirk-factor archive. We do not yet know whether it indicates shock absorption, neurological shock resistance, impact buffering, or another related mechanism" Shock. The word sat in the room. Future road. Contaminated road. Ren felt nothing at first.
Then a cold thread of interest. That frightened him. Nezu saw. Of course.
"Do not decide anything now" Ren's mouth was dry.
"Decide?"
"Whether knowledge taken from Garaki can ever be used ethically. That is not tonight's question" Recovery Girl said "That is not this week's question" Kurose added from the desk "Possibly not this month's" Ren looked at his hands.
"Garaki was right that compatible grafting can work" Recovery Girl's face became thunder. Ren continued before she could stop him.
"That is exactly why he cannot own it" Silence. Nezu's eyes sharpened. Kurose stopped moving. Recovery Girl looked at Ren for a long time. Then said "You are too feverish to be that dangerously correct" Ren closed his eyes.
"Not proposing""Good""Just seeing road" Kurose said "Seeing a road does not mean walking it" Ren opened his eyes.
"But pretending it is not there leaves it to him" Nezu's ears lowered.
"Yes" The room hated the answer. Every adult in it hated the answer. Ren did too. That made it trustworthy. Nezu spoke quietly.
"Then the first principle is this. Garaki proved possibility through atrocity. We do not let atrocity own possibility" Ren repeated the line silently. Kurose said "Second principle. No one calls stolen pieces resources in front of me" Recovery Girl said "Third. No one touches his body with future plans while I am alive" Ren looked at her. She glared.
"Do not test the alive part" Ren almost smiled. Nezu bowed his head slightly.
"Fourth. The word mine waits for Ren" The room settled around that. The word mine waited. The word Shock waited. The road waited. Kamino did not feel like it would wait much longer. Ren looked toward the doorway. All Might was not there. Again. Because everyone had learned timing. Because Recovery Girl had made sure. Because Nezu understood that some futures needed closed doors before they became spoken. Ren asked "Kamino?" Recovery Girl immediately said "No" Ren turned his head toward her.
"Not explain. Ask" Nezu's gaze sharpened.
"What are you asking?" Ren breathed. The fragment moved behind his eyes like heat lightning. Not clean. Not enough. Enough.
"Is it in the recovered data?" Nezu was silent for too long. Kurose's face changed. Recovery Girl swore softly. Ren closed his eyes. So yes. Nezu said "One recovered fragment from the trauma center contained shipping initials and a district reference. We are not certain. Kamino is one possible direction" Ren opened his eyes. The ceiling seemed farther away.
"Not possible" Recovery Girl leaned forward.
"Ren" He shook his head once. Small.
"Not full. But not possible. It is direction" Kurose moved closer.
"Fragment?"
"Yes" Nezu's voice softened.
"Can it wait until morning?" The fragment burned. All Might standing in smoke. The country watching. A hand pointing. The last of it. Ren's scars warmed. Graft Lattice stirred, pain modulation lowering the shoulder edge, repair scaffold pulsing once like a second heartbeat. Scar Tissue contained it, held it, refused to let the fragment become another uncontrolled trigger. Ren breathed through it.
"Yes" Recovery Girl looked surprised. So did Kurose. Ren stared at the ceiling.
"Morning. Protocol people. All Might. Not parents. Not students" Nezu nodded.
"Recovery Girl, Kurose, myself, All Might" Ren hesitated.
"Aizawa?" Kurose looked at him. Ren continued "He needs to know the line. Not all fragments. The line" Nezu considered.
"Yes. Aizawa" Recovery Girl muttered "This meeting sounds medically terrible" Ren whispered "Trustworthy" She glared at him.
"Do not use our words against us""Bad habit" Night returned to R-2. Not easily. Hana and Daichi came back for the last approved contact before sleep. Hana brought no object, but she had changed the tea label on the bolted counter so BARLEY, UNFORTUNATELY was slightly crooked. Ren noticed immediately.
"You moved it" Hana looked innocent in a way no one believed.
"Moved what?" Daichi looked at the label.
"Clearly natural drift" Recovery Girl said "Nothing in this room drifts naturally" Hana looked at Ren. His eyes were wet. She smiled.
"Now it is less staged" Garaki's fake R-2 lost another inch of power. Ren breathed.
"Yes" Daichi placed one hand over his own chest, then tapped three fingers against the air and drew a line beneath. Not on Ren. Not on the bed. In the air. I am here and the floor is still here. Ren answered with his left fingers against the blanket. One. Two. Three. Line. Here. Hana's hand hovered. Ren nodded. She touched his hair. Daichi stood close enough to hold the room steady. They stayed until Recovery Girl made them leave and threatened to install parental timers.
When they were gone, Ren looked at the signs again. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST ROOM STILL ON PROBATION Machine lost. The room was not healed. Neither was he. But the room had not become past tense. He slept in pieces. At some point before dawn, Pain Modulation narrowed the ache in his shoulder without swallowing the whole limb. Repair Scaffold warmed under the brace and demanded food. Scar Tissue held both through channels it had built from damage, refusal, and survival. Graft Lattice. Working description only.
Foreign functions. Contained. Borrowed. Under protest. The word mine waited. Kamino waited less patiently. Ren woke before the morning alarm, staring at the ceiling with the fragment already burning behind his eyes. Today, he would tell All Might. Not everything. Not the future like a script. A place. A warning. A cost. A line. At Kamino, you will be the Number One Hero for the last time. His throat tightened around the unsaid sentence. Then the second line followed, the one that mattered more.
That is not permission to die. Ren turned his left hand palm up on the blanket. Open. Cool. Here. For now, the floor was still here.
