Chương 136: Gear That Asks

Support gear made Ren suspicious. This was not fair to support gear. A brace could hold a wrist without lying about the wrist. A harness could catch a fall without claiming the fall had been heroic. A sensor could tell medical staff what the body was doing before the body became too proud to say it aloud. A rail could give a hand something to trust while the legs remembered they were allowed to stop. Tools were not the problem. Tools that entered a room too confidently were the problem. Tools that said more.
Tools that said faster. Tools that said useful. Tools that made adults smile as if metal, fabric, circuits, and straps could solve what had happened to a body without asking the body whether it wanted to be solved. So when Aizawa told Ren that Provisional Track required an initial support consultation, Ren looked at him and said "No" Aizawa did not blink.
"That was fast""Efficiency""You do not know the proposal""Support gear""Yes""No" Recovery Girl, sitting beside the monitor with a cup of tea she had earned through violence and seniority, nodded.
"Healthy suspicion" Aizawa looked at her.
"That is not helping""It is medically accurate" Ren sat at fourteen degrees in R-2, blanket over his knees, left wrist wrapped, right shoulder taped, ribs less angry than they should have been. Better remained wrong. Wrong remained better. The new sign on the wall had already become part of the room's legal ecosystem. BETTER IS ALLOWED TO BE GOOD AND WRONG AT THE SAME TIME The terrible cat now had a soup bowl. Ren suspected Hana had given it soup to avoid legal consequences for making it worse.
Aizawa held a folder but did not open it. Good. Folders made things official before consent had finished breathing.
"Provisional License preparation requires support review" he said "Not equipment approval. Review" Ren looked at him.
"Difference""Support review asks what tools would protect your conditions. Equipment approval gives you tools. We are not there yet" Kurose, seated by the desk, lifted a pen.
"That sentence is going into the student version" Aizawa ignored her. Ren looked at Recovery Girl.
"Medical opinion?"
"Support gear can prevent stupidity if designed by someone with enough fear of me""That is not answer""It is my answer" Dr. Seno stood near the wall with a tablet held against her chest.
"Your Graft Lattice creates several specific support needs. A wrist brace that does not compress the pain gate. rib cooling that does not trigger repair overreaction. a harness point that distributes load without forcing Scar Tissue to compensate. body-map feedback visible to you before staff. nutrition access that does not require full hand function" Ren stared.
"That is many""Yes""Too many""Bodies are inconvenient" Recovery Girl said "His especially" Ren looked at Aizawa.
"Who?" Aizawa's mouth tightened in a way that suggested he was about to say a name and already regretted it.
"Hatsume Mei" Silence. Kurose looked at the ceiling. Recovery Girl closed her eyes. Dr. Seno looked like a scientist who had never met a natural disaster but had read concerning reports. Ren looked at all of them.
"That silence is informative" Aizawa said "She is talented" Kurose said "Extremely" Recovery Girl said "Unsupervised, she is a medical incident with tools" Aizawa continued as if the interruption had been expected.
"She will be supervised. By Power Loader, Kurose, me, Recovery Girl through remote threat, Dr. Seno, and your parents if you want them present. The first meeting is design intake only. No fitting. No attachment. No testing" Ren processed that.
"No testing""No testing""No equipment touches me without consent""Correct""No calling gear upgrade""Correct""No calling me a platform" Aizawa's eyes sharpened.
"Correct""No saying Graft Lattice can be optimized" Kurose pointed at the folder.
"Already banned language" Ren blinked.
"Good" Recovery Girl said "We learn slowly but violently" Hana, who had been quiet beside the bed, touched Ren's hair after his nod.
"You can say no after seeing the room" Ren looked at her.
"Yes" Daichi, standing near Bentaro, added "You can say no before seeing the room too" Ren looked at him.
"Yes" Aizawa said "You can also say yes to review and no to specific tools" Ren looked back at him. That mattered. Not all doors. Specific doors.
"Fine" Aizawa raised an eyebrow.
"Fine means?" Ren sighed.
"I consent to design intake review. No fitting. No touch. No testing. No support gear language crimes" Kurose wrote. Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Recovery Girl pointed at him with her cane.
"If she calls anything a baby near your body, you say stop" Ren blinked.
"What?" Aizawa looked tired.
"You will understand" That was not reassuring. Shinso consented to the review in less time and with more suspicion. He arrived at Support Development Studio 4 with Aizawa on his left, Kurose on his right, and the expression of someone being marched into a room where every object probably had opinions. Ren joined remotely first, because Recovery Girl had decided that physical travel to Support Studio without first assessing the level of chaos would be a crime against her profession.
His screen appeared on a movable medical display stand that Kurose had personally inspected for hidden enthusiasm. Class 1-A was not present. Good. This was not a class module. This was not a show. This was a door with tools behind it. Support Studio 4 looked less like a classroom and more like a forge that had discovered electricity, ambition, and poor impulse control. Workbenches lined the walls.
Half-built gauntlets, boots, helmets, cables, braces, capture-line prototypes, sensors, and objects Ren could not name sat in carefully labeled areas that somehow still looked one startled sneeze away from revolt. Power Loader stood in the center with both hands on his hips. Beside him stood a girl with pink hair, goggles pushed up, eyes bright enough to make the room feel under-lit by comparison. Hatsume Mei looked at the medical display. Then at Shinso. Then at Aizawa. Then at the whiteboard Kurose had rolled in.
On the whiteboard, Kurose had written: DESIGN INTAKE ONLYNO FITTINGNO TOUCHNO TESTINGSTUDENT FIRSTTOOLS MUST ASK Hatsume leaned forward.
"Tools must ask?" Kurose said "Yes" Hatsume's grin widened.
"That is a fascinating design constraint!" Ren looked at Recovery Girl off-screen.
"She used exclamation" Recovery Girl's voice came through the side speaker.
"I heard" Power Loader cleared his throat.
"Hatsume""I know, I know. No surprise deployment. No involuntary contact. No demonstration explosions. No touching the medical student. No touching the brain student. No calling them prototypes" Shinso stared.
"Brain student?" Hatsume looked at him.
"Your Quirk is Brainwashing, yes? That makes you brain student in my mental filing system" Kurose said "No" Hatsume blinked.
"No?"
"No filing students by Quirk feature" Hatsume looked genuinely thoughtful.
"Student Hitoshi Shinso. Candidate support category voice-mediated consent-control heroics" Shinso stared.
"That is somehow worse and better" Power Loader pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Use names" Hatsume nodded hard.
"Shinso! Akiyama! Names first. Babies second" Every adult in both rooms reacted. Ren's heart rate rose. Recovery Girl said "Stop" The room froze. Hatsume froze too, goggles sliding slightly. Kurose stepped in immediately.
"Language pause. In this room, the word baby may refer only to your equipment, never to the students, their bodies, their Quirks, or their medical conditions" Hatsume's eyes widened.
"Oh! Yes. Of course. My babies are inventions. Students are not babies unless biologically or emotionally complicated, and even then not mine" Shinso whispered "This is unbearable" Ren said through the speaker "Accurate" Hatsume turned toward the screen.
"Apologies. Correction accepted?" Ren looked at her. The apology was fast. But not slippery. She was not asking him to make her feel better. He nodded once.
"Accepted" Recovery Girl said "Proceed carefully" Hatsume saluted the speaker.
"Carefully proceeding!" Aizawa muttered "This will be long" Power Loader looked at the whiteboard.
"We start with student goals. Not gear ideas" Hatsume vibrated in place with visible suffering.
"But gear ideas are how I breathe""Then hold your breath""I may explode""No demonstrations" She slapped both hands over her mouth. Shinso looked at Aizawa.
"Is she always like this?" Aizawa said "Often worse" Hatsume dropped her hands.
"Student Shinso first?" The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation. Shinso glanced at Kurose. Kurose nodded.
"You can decline any question" He faced Hatsume.
"Fine" Hatsume grabbed a marker and turned to a clean board.
"Hero objective?" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Responder" The word came out smaller than it should have. Hatsume did not laugh. She did not make a dramatic sound. She wrote it in big letters. RESPONDER Then under it: arrives after requestreduces harmdoes not make panic prove itself right Shinso stared.
"How did you—""I listened to the briefing notes!" Hatsume said brightly Kurose said "With permission""With permission!" Hatsume repeated "I am improving socially under supervision!" Power Loader said "Question" Hatsume nodded.
"What problem should support gear solve without changing the meaning of your Quirk?" Shinso went still. Ren watched from the screen. Good question. Unexpected. Shinso looked at the board.
"Voice reach" Hatsume wrote.
"Clarity" She wrote.
"Non-lethal capture options if Brainwashing is not consented or safe" She wrote faster.
"Protection against people trying to gag me or block my voice" The marker paused for a fraction. Then continued.
"Review systems so people know when Brainwashing was used and when it ended" Hatsume turned.
"Excellent!" Shinso's shoulders twitched. Kurose said "Praise intensity" Hatsume inhaled dramatically.
"Controlled excellent" Shinso looked pained.
"Better" Hatsume tapped the board.
"Potential support babies—sorry—support concepts" Kurose nodded.
"Good correction" Hatsume wrote: VOICE FOCUS MASKDIRECTIONAL MICROPHONERESONANCE FILTERCAPTURE LINE COMPATIBILITYCONSENT INDICATOR LIGHTPOST-USE LOG TRIGGERVOICE SAMPLE LOCKOUT Shinso's eyes fixed on the last one.
"Voice sample lockout" Hatsume nodded rapidly.
"If you ever use voice modulation, the tool should require authorized samples, logged consent, expiration windows, and no permanent storage without approval. No stealing voices. No surprise voice use. No using someone's voice because it is convenient" The room went quiet. Shinso stared at her. For the first time, he looked less like he wanted to escape the studio and more like he had found a dangerous object worth inspecting. Aizawa's eyes narrowed in approval. Kurose wrote something down. Ren looked at the board.
No stealing voices. No surprise voice use. No using someone's voice because it is convenient. Hatsume lowered the marker slightly.
"I make support gear. That means I think about how tools can cheat. If I build cheating into the tool, the user has to spend energy not becoming worse. Bad design" Shinso breathed out slowly.
"That is actually good" Hatsume beamed.
"Controlled excellent?" Shinso grimaced.
"Controlled acceptable""I will take it!" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Condition?" Shinso nodded.
"Voice modulation only with explicit consent and temporary use window" Kurose wrote. Shinso added "No classmate voice sample without direct consent from that classmate. No teacher voice unless approved by staff and the teacher. No villain voice replication unless emergency protocol and post-review" Hatsume wrote everything. Then looked up.
"What about synthetic neutral voices?" Shinso blinked.
"What?"
"A non-person voice. Generated pattern that does not imitate anyone real. Lower ethical burden. Maybe useful for amplification without identity theft" Shinso looked at Aizawa. Aizawa said "Worth considering" Shinso looked back at Hatsume.
"Add maybe" Hatsume wrote MAYBE in enormous letters and underlined it three times. Kurose said "One underline" Hatsume erased two. Ren watched Shinso watch the board. The room had not made Brainwashing into convenience. The gear had asked how not to steal. That mattered. Then Hatsume turned toward Ren's screen.
"Akiyama" His heart rate rose before she said anything else. Recovery Girl said "Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"R-2. screen. Hatsume. Power Loader. Shinso. Kurose. Aizawa. Recovery Girl. Hana. Daichi. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. suspicious. okay""Pain absence?"
"No""Gate?"
"Quiet" Recovery Girl said "Proceed" Hatsume stood a little farther from the screen than before, visibly restraining herself.
"Hero objective?" Ren looked at the board. Hero objective. Not Quirk objective. Not gear objective. Not what can your body do now.
"What phrasing?" Hatsume tilted her head.
"What do you want the gear to help you protect?" Ren froze. The room did too. Kurose looked at Hatsume like she had accidentally stepped directly onto the correct pressure plate. Aizawa's expression did not change. Recovery Girl's silence became sharp with approval she would never admit. Ren breathed.
"Route back" Hatsume wrote.
"Body map" She wrote.
"Stop before collapse" She wrote.
"Civilian stabilization without overuse" She wrote.
"Graft Lattice visibility to me before staff" The marker paused. Then wrote.
"Meaning" Hatsume looked at him. Ren stared back.
"What?"
"You said meaning?" He had not meant to. Maybe he had. The room waited. Ren swallowed.
"Gear should not make Graft Lattice look like the point" Hatsume's expression changed. Not dimmed. Focused.
"Gear should support you, not display the Quirk""Yes" She wrote: NO HERO DISPLAY OF GRAFT LATTICE Ren's throat tightened. She added: FUNCTION FEEDBACK PRIVATE-FIRST Kurose said softly "Private-first" Hatsume nodded.
"Data first to student, then medical staff, then instructors as permitted. If the support item lights up dramatically every time his Quirk activates, that teaches the room to stare at the activation instead of the person" Recovery Girl said "Good" Everyone looked at the speaker. Recovery Girl sounded offended at herself.
"Continue" Hatsume looked delighted but restrained it enough to survive.
"Potential concepts" She wrote: LOW-PROFILE WRIST BRACERIB COOLING BANDHARNESS-COMPATIBLE BELTBODY-MAP FEEDBACK PATCHESSTOP BUTTON ACCESSIBLE TO STUDENTNUTRITION QUICK-ACCESS PACKNONCOMPRESSIVE GLOVEPRIVATE ALERT VIBRATIONLOAD LIMIT STRIPFALL CATCH CONNECTOR Ren stared. Too much. Useful. Too much because useful. The wrist gate flickered. He felt it.
"Stop" The room stopped. Hatsume froze with marker in hand. Power Loader stepped between her and the board, not to hide it, but to hold the room still. Aizawa looked toward the screen. Recovery Girl said "Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"R-2. screen. board has too many tools. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. useful panic. pain present. gate narrowing. okay" Kurose said "Good stop" Ren opened his eyes. Hatsume lowered the marker completely.
"Too many at once" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Design correction. We reduce to three categories" She wiped part of the board without waiting for praise. Then wrote: STOP ACCESS MAP FEEDBACK LOAD SAFETY Ren breathed. Better. Three doors. Not ten. Hatsume looked at him.
"Is that intake-safe?" He looked at Recovery Girl. She said "Answer yourself" He looked back at Hatsume.
"Yes""Good. No. Controlled acceptable" Shinso muttered "She is adapting" Ren said "Worrying" Hatsume looked pleased. Power Loader said "Do not be pleased too loudly" She made a small contained fist pump that almost counted as quiet. Kurose looked at Ren.
"Conditions?" Ren nodded slowly.
"Support gear must not hide pain from me" Hatsume wrote.
"Must not auto-trigger pain modulation" Written.
"Must not tighten around Graft Lattice activation unless I command it" Written.
"Must not display activation publicly unless safety requires it" Written.
"Must prioritize stop access over performance support" Hatsume wrote that in larger letters. PRIORITIZE STOP ACCESS OVER PERFORMANCE SUPPORT Aizawa nodded once.
"Accepted" Ren continued "No red emergency light on my body" Hatsume paused.
"But emergency visibility—""No red emergency light on my body" Hatsume looked at Power Loader. Power Loader looked at Kurose. Kurose looked at Ren.
"Reason?" Ren breathed.
"Lab" The word was enough. Hatsume erased the small sketch she had begun beside alert systems.
"No red. Private vibration first. medical display second. instructor alert third. visual external only if collapse risk and approved" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Hatsume wrote: NO RED BODY ALERTS Then under it: DO NOT MAKE STUDENT LOOK LIKE MACHINE FAILURE Recovery Girl said "Keep that" Kurose said "Definitely keep that" Ren looked down. The wrist gate stayed quiet. Pain present. Good. The meeting broke for ten minutes because Recovery Girl declared everyone had reached maximum intake density. Shinso went to stand near a table of capture-line prototypes. He did not touch anything. Hatsume stood three meters away vibrating with the pain of not explaining them.
Ren remained on screen, but the audio to R-2 stayed open. Hana leaned closer.
"Okay?" Ren nodded.
"Better than expected" Daichi said "Dangerous praise""Yes" Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Numbers high but not stupid" Kurose approached the screen.
"You stopped before the board became too much""Yes""You did not apologize for stopping" Ren blinked. He had not. That realization felt larger than the support studio.
"No""Good""Not good good" Kurose smiled faintly.
"Good operational distinction" Ren sighed.
"Everyone" She looked amused.
"Communal vocabulary" Across the room, Shinso spoke without looking away from the capture-line prototypes.
"Hatsume" She froze.
"Yes?"
"If the voice mask exists, I want a visible consent mode" Her eyes widened.
"Meaning?"
"If I am using normal amplified voice, one indicator. If I am using authorized modulation, different indicator. If Brainwashing protocol is active, another. No hidden mode in training" Hatsume's entire face lit with design joy. Then she looked at Kurose. Kurose gave one careful nod. Hatsume turned back with contained intensity.
"That is excellent ethical interface design" Shinso looked uncomfortable.
"It is so people know what is happening""Yes! The tool tells the room what kind of interaction is occurring without revealing private data. Consent mode. neutral mode. protocol mode. emergency mode only staff-triggered" Shinso nodded.
"No emergency mode that makes me look like villain alarm" Hatsume's marker was back in hand.
"Write that?"
"Yes" She wrote: NO VILLAIN ALARM DESIGN Shinso stared.
"That is blunt""Blunt signs prevent bad babies—bad inventions—from becoming worse" Kurose said "Good correction" Hatsume beamed. Power Loader whispered "Progress" The second half of the intake involved Class 1-A for exactly fifteen minutes, because support gear that would affect shared modules required class awareness but not class ownership. Aizawa brought in a small group first. Midoriya, Bakugo, Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, Iida, Uraraka, Asui. No full class crowd.
Kaminari complained from the hallway that he had been excluded from the cool gear room. Jiro's voice answered "That is why" The selected students entered and immediately looked at the boards. Shinso's board. Responder. Voice sample lockout. No stealing voices. No villain alarm design. Ren's board. Stop access. Map feedback. Load safety. No hero display of Graft Lattice. Prioritize stop access over performance support. Do not make student look like machine failure. No one spoke for several seconds.
Then Bakugo said "Support gear has rules now?" Aizawa said "It always should have" Yaoyorozu stepped closer to the board, eyes thoughtful.
"Private-first feedback is excellent" Hatsume appeared at her side like a summoned engineering spirit.
"Yes! Because public displays alter peer behavior and increase performance pressure. Private-first keeps agency with the student unless safety threshold requires escalation" Yaoyorozu nodded seriously.
"That makes sense" Hatsume looked delighted.
"Finally someone wants details" Aizawa said "No" Hatsume deflated by four percent. Midoriya stared at Ren's board.
"Stop access over performance support" Ren watched him through the screen.
"Yes" Midoriya swallowed.
"Could that apply to costume design generally?" The room went still. Power Loader's expression changed. Hatsume's eyes widened. Aizawa looked at Midoriya.
"Explain" Midoriya's face reddened.
"Most of our gear helps us do more. Hit harder, move faster, extend range, withstand strain. But if gear only helps output and not stopping, then it might reinforce bad habits" Bakugo stared at him.
"Deku just insulted the entire support industry" Hatsume looked thrilled.
"No, he identified an underdeveloped design philosophy!" Bakugo groaned.
"Great. You fed her" Ren said "Good observation" Midoriya looked at him. Ren added "Dangerous for you" Midoriya nodded.
"Yes" Bakugo looked at Midoriya's gloves.
"Your gloves help shoot power out. Do they tell you when your arm is being stupid?" Midoriya blinked.
"No""Dumb" Midoriya looked at him. Bakugo looked away.
"Fix it" Hatsume already had a marker.
"Midoriya support review later!" Midoriya squeaked. Aizawa said "Later means later" Hatsume wrote LATER in medium size. Kurose approved the lack of underlining. Todoroki looked at Shinso's board.
"Voice sample lockout" Shinso looked at him.
"Yes""If you ever needed my voice for a training protocol, I would prefer limited duration and exact phrase restriction" The room went still. Shinso blinked.
"You are offering?" Todoroki nodded.
"If it is useful and controlled" Kurose said "Careful" Todoroki corrected immediately.
"If it supports a training objective we both consent to" Shinso stared at him. Then nodded.
"I might ask later. Not now""Accepted" Bakugo made a disgusted sound.
"Everyone is getting too good at this" Uraraka looked at Ren's board.
"No hero display of Graft Lattice" Ren nodded. She looked at him through the screen.
"Does that mean no visible support lights unless emergency?"
"Yes""That is good. If it lit up every time, people would stare" Ren looked down.
"Yes" Asui said "And staring changes behavior""Yes" Iida adjusted his glasses.
"Then our class protocol should include no calling attention to private alerts unless assigned" Yaoyorozu nodded.
"That should be written" Kurose wrote. Bakugo muttered "Of course it should" Hatsume looked between the boards.
"Support gear can ask the room to behave too" Ren froze. The sentence had arrived from Hatsume too brightly, but it was right. Aizawa looked at her.
"Say that again, without exclamation" She inhaled.
"Support gear can ask the room to behave too" Kurose wrote it under the shared protocol. Support gear can ask the room to behave too. Ren stared. Maybe good gear did not just make a body more useful. Maybe good gear made the room less likely to use the body wrong. That was not small. The fifteen minutes ended when Hatsume began sketching six different feedback systems in the air with both hands and Power Loader announced that everyone was leaving before she entered orbit.
Class 1-A left with more questions than answers. Good. Answers became dangerous when they arrived too complete. Ren stayed on screen until the room emptied. Shinso remained by his board. Hatsume stood between the two boards, hands folded behind her back because Power Loader had told her marker privileges were conditional. Aizawa looked at Ren and Shinso.
"Decision?" Ren said "Continue concept design" Shinso said "Continue" Aizawa nodded.
"No prototypes yet" Hatsume made a wounded sound. Power Loader said "No prototypes yet" She straightened.
"Concept design only" Kurose said "Good" Ren looked at Hatsume.
"Thank you" She blinked.
"For what?"
"For changing the board when I said stop" Hatsume's expression softened in a way that did not suit her energy and therefore felt honest.
"The tool has to ask. So does the designer" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" Shinso looked at her.
"And for voice lockout" Hatsume saluted.
"No voice theft in my babies" Kurose looked at her.
"My inventions""My inventions!" Hatsume corrected "No voice theft in my inventions" Recovery Girl said through the speaker "She may survive" Power Loader exhaled like a man who had seen many possible explosions and avoided two. The intake ended there. Ren's screen went dark after a map check.
R-2 returned around him with signs, soup cat, Hana's hand near his hair, Daichi adjusting Bentaro's tag, Recovery Girl reviewing numbers with suspicion, and the strange tiredness of having let tools come near without letting them enter. Hana said "How do you feel?" Ren thought. Suspicious. Relieved. Tired. Less trapped. Worried about liking one of Hatsume's sentences.
"Tools can ask the room to behave" Daichi nodded slowly.
"That sounds good""It sounds dangerous""Many good things do" Hana smiled faintly.
"Most good things aren't simple" Ren closed his eyes. Map. R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. support intake over. no touch. no testing. stop obeyed. tools not trusted yet. tools maybe asking. Pain present. Gate quiet. Meaning present. Not fixed. Not solved. Present. In Support Studio 4, after everyone left, Hatsume stood before the two boards and stared at them longer than Power Loader expected. He watched her carefully.
"You are quiet""I am having design thoughts""That is never quiet""These are different" Power Loader waited. Hatsume tapped the board under Ren's section.
"Most support gear asks how to extend the user""Yes""This asks how to protect the user from extension" Power Loader's expression softened behind his helmet.
"Yes" She turned to Shinso's board.
"And this asks how to make a Quirk less socially invisible without making people more afraid of it""Yes" Hatsume grinned suddenly, bright but less explosive than before.
"These are very good babies" Power Loader sighed.
"Hatsume""My inventions are very ethically challenging inventions""Better" She picked up the marker.
"Can I write one more line?" He considered the boards. Then nodded.
"One" She wrote at the top between both projects: GEAR THAT ASKS BEFORE IT HELPS Power Loader looked at it. Then at her.
"Keep that" Hatsume beamed. This time, he let her.
