Chương 109: Trigger Quality

Garaki had a gift for making cruelty sound like a calibration problem. Ren learned that during the next phase. The doctor did not call it punishment. He did not call it interrogation. He did not call it torture, or conditioning, or violation, or any of the words that would have given the room the dignity of admitting what it was. He called it trigger refinement. Ren hated the phrase before he understood it. Then he understood it and hated it more.
The lights brightened by a fraction after what the laboratory considered morning. There was no window to make the lie convincing, but the machines changed rhythm, assistants changed shifts, and the feeding line at his left arm slowed after delivering enough nutrients to keep the Regenerative Scaffold from cannibalizing him too quickly. His fever had lowered, then risen again, then settled into a wrong plateau that made his skin feel like it belonged under glass. Pain Suppressor flickered less often now.
That should have been good. It was not. When it activated, it did so in narrower channels. A line of pain across his right shoulder would switch off. A section of wrist restraint would vanish. The ache behind his ribs would dull for exactly seven breaths and then return with interest. Garaki watched each episode with the expression of a man reading a weather pattern no one else had noticed.
Regenerative Scaffold worked underneath the fever, slower and hungrier, pulling support toward damaged tissue and old scar pathways. It did not fix him. It made repairs possible in the way scaffolding made a building possible while saying nothing about whether the building had wanted to be built. Scar Tissue remained between them. Boundary tissue. Containment. Pale lines under the skin around the graft sites, not raised enough to be scars yet, not deep enough to ignore. Thin maps of refusal.
Ren turned his head and looked at the left arm where the first graft had entered. They are in me. They are not mine. The line was still true. He repeated it until the room blurred around it. Garaki entered at 06: 12 by the monitor clock, accompanied by two assistants and the same sterile patience. He reviewed the charts before speaking to Ren, which was either professional focus or a reminder of the order. Data first. Subject survival second. Boy third. Ren remembered. Garaki knew he remembered.
That was the problem with good memories in bad rooms. They became resources unless guarded. The doctor looked from the monitor to Ren.
"Pain events are becoming more localized" Ren said nothing.
"Scar boundary formation has thickened around both graft points. Not full integration. But containment is stabilizing" Ren stared at the ceiling. Garaki came closer.
"You dislike that the containment is useful" Ren turned his head slowly.
"You dislike that I know what containment means" The doctor's mouth curved faintly.
"Yes. A little" Good. Small. Not enough. Still good. Garaki gestured to one assistant. A screen lowered from the ceiling near Ren's left side, angled so he could see it without turning too far. At first it showed nothing but gray. Ren's pulse changed anyway. He hated that too. Garaki noticed.
"The body anticipates before the mind confirms" Ren closed his eyes.
"Say your phrase and get it over with""Trigger quality" There it was. Ren opened his eyes again because hiding would not stop the screen. Garaki stood beside it.
"During extraction, your strongest flare occurred when social anchors were physically engaged. Recovery Girl at the shoulder. Kurose at the wrist. Aizawa attempting line-of-sight recovery. Your body did not merely respond to personal pain. It responded to being separated from human anchors" Ren said nothing. The monitor beside him betrayed heart rate. Garaki glanced at it.
"Then, after graft introduction, containment strengthened when you invoked routes back. Not places. People. The room is not your only environment. Your body is carrying relational maps" Ren stared at him. He wanted to laugh. He wanted to bite. He wanted to be anywhere else. Instead, he said "You make love sound like infrastructure" Garaki considered the sentence.
"Perhaps it is""No""No?"
"Not for you" The doctor's face did not change much. The monitor near his hand beeped once. Ren did not know what that meant. Garaki folded his hands behind his back.
"We are going to examine which anchor categories generate the most useful response" Ren's stomach dropped. Useful. Always that word. He pulled once against the restraints. The right wrist restraint held. The left wrist restraint held. The chest strap, loosened during observation, tightened automatically by two notches in response to movement. Ren froze. Garaki watched.
"Please do not injure yourself before we begin" Ren breathed through clenched teeth.
"Please do not pretend that sentence was concern""Fair correction" The screen activated. R-2 appeared. Empty. For one second, Ren could not breathe. The room was exactly wrong. The shelf was there. Bentaro's portrait. The family photo. The wall panel. The tea labels. The fixed desk. The sealed window. The bed. The request button glowing faintly beside it. No one inside. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE Ren stared at the words. The lab disappeared for half a breath. Then the lab returned sharper. His scars heated.
Garaki turned slightly toward the monitor.
"Room anchor. moderate response" Ren forced air into his lungs.
"Not live" Garaki looked back at him.
"Correct" He had expected Ren not to know. Good. Ren held onto that. Garaki asked "How did you determine that?" Ren smiled through dry lips.
"You cleaned it" The doctor's eyes narrowed. Ren looked at the screen.
"R-2 is never that clean. Hana would have moved the tea label by now because BARLEY, UNFORTUNATELY annoys her when it is crooked. Daichi would have placed Bentaro slightly wrong after checking the room. Kurose would pretend not to notice and then fix it exactly one minute later. That room is staged" Silence. Then the speaker in the ceiling crackled. All For One's voice entered, amused.
"Remarkable" Garaki did not look pleased. Ren did. Barely. Enough. The screen went dark. Garaki spoke to the assistant.
"Reduce reliance on visual staging. Subject detects environmental continuity errors" Ren closed his eyes. Too much. Again. But this time the data also belonged to the route back. R-2 existed. They had used an image. Maybe old. Maybe stolen from earlier surveillance. Maybe reconstructed. But they knew the room. That meant U. A. mattered enough to imitate. It meant the room had not become nothing. The screen changed. This time, audio. Static first. Then Hana's voice.
"Warm or cold?" Ren's body reacted so sharply the chest strap tightened again. His scars flared. The Pain Suppressor factor misfired down his right arm and killed the pain there entirely. For three breaths, his injured shoulder vanished. Panic rose. Then he listened. The voice repeated.
"Warm or cold?" Wrong. The words were right. The rhythm was wrong. Too even. No breath before warm. No tiny break after cold where Hana waited for the answer like she was already touching his forehead in her mind. Ren opened his eyes.
"Fake" Garaki tilted his head.
"Voice synthesis is imperfect, then""No""No?"
"You do not know what she is afraid of when she asks" The words cost something. The monitor showed it. Garaki saw. All For One said "And yet the body responded before correction" Ren breathed.
"Yes" The room went quiet. He had not meant to give that. But denying it would teach them more. He chose the smaller truth.
"My body is faster than your fake" Garaki looked almost pleased again.
"An important distinction" Ren hated him. The next audio clip came from Daichi.
"Route back counts" Wrong too. Not terrible. Worse because close. Ren kept his eyes on the ceiling.
"Fake" Then Kurose.
"Ren" The voice broke on his name. The monitor spiked. His scars flashed hot along both arms. Not because the voice was correct. Because the memory was. Kurose screaming in the imaging room. Her grip slipping one centimeter. His name torn out of her as the fog folded. Garaki watched the lines climb. Ren clenched his teeth.
"Fake" Garaki said "The response is stronger despite detection" Ren breathed in. Out. Do not feed. Do not chase. Do not prove. He said "Memory is not permission" Garaki's pen paused above the tablet. All For One was silent. Ren turned his head enough to look at the doctor.
"You can trigger a doorbell by imitating the sound. That does not make you a guest" The doctor stared at him. For once, he did not immediately name the pattern. Good. At U. A., Mandalay returned to the command room at 07: 40. No one stopped her. That was either because she had permission or because everyone who might have stopped her understood that grief had already done worse. She stood before the main board and looked at Ragdoll's name first. Then Ren's. Her eyes were red. Her voice did not shake.
"You are searching like people without Search who still remember what Search would ask" Nezu turned from the map.
"And what would Search ask?" Mandalay stepped closer.
"Not where he is first" Aizawa looked up. Mandalay's hand closed around the edge of the table.
"Search gives location, but Ragdoll always used it with context. She did not just point. She asked why someone was there, who they were near, whether they were moving, whether the location made sense. Without the Quirk, you still need the questions" Kurose nodded slowly.
"Negative search" Mandalay looked at her. Kurose continued "We cannot locate Ren directly. We locate the absences around him. Power that should not be used. clinics that should be closed. supply chains that moved before the abduction. archives cleared after the search team deployed. Staff routes altered around invisible centers" Mandalay's mouth tightened.
"Yes" Nezu's eyes sharpened.
"Proceed" Mandalay looked at the board.
"Ragdoll's Search would also detect if a target moved. You cannot do that. So find what must move because Ren is there" Power Loader leaned forward.
"Biological support" Recovery Girl said "Nutrient load. Fever management. sterile supplies. pain regulation. Quirk-factor stabilizers if grafting occurred" Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings. Dr. Seno's remote voice added "Specialized metabolic support for connective tissue recruitment. anti-inflammatory buffers. electrolytes. protein-dense medical feeds. cooling systems" Hakamata began typing.
"Tracking unusual medical supply purchases and thefts" Aizawa said "Garaki uses shells. He will not buy directly" Kurose said "Then find what disappears. Inventory discrepancies. clinics reporting spoilage. hospitals losing nutrient support bags. veterinary suppliers. sports medicine facilities. anywhere less watched" Present Mic said "And noise" They looked at him. He tapped the map.
"You need cooling and machines. If a hidden lab is running hot, it dumps heat or sound somewhere. People complain before they know what they heard. Humming. vibration. weird nights. pipes clicking. lights flickering" Nezu's ears lifted.
"Mandalay, Present Mic, Power Loader, Kurose. Build me a map of things that should not be moving around a place that does not exist" Aizawa said "I am joining" Nezu looked at him.
"You were going to regardless""Yes""Good. You may do so where I can supervise the consequences" Aizawa glared. Nezu ignored it. Mandalay stared at Ragdoll's name again. Her hand trembled once. Then stopped.
"We find both of them" No one called it a promise. It was not allowed to be one. It was direction. In the protected common room, the students built their own wrong map. It began because Kaminari could not sit still and because Jiro got tired of watching him turn fear into static. He stood, paced six steps, stopped, paced back, sat, stood again, and finally said "This is stupid" Jiro looked up.
"Which part?"
"All of it""Useful""No, I mean we know stuff" Iida straightened.
"We have been instructed not to interfere with active rescue operations" Kaminari pointed at him.
"Not interfere. Think. Those are different things" Todoroki said "Sometimes" Uraraka rubbed her eyes.
"What do we know?" The room went quiet. Shinso sat on the floor against the wall, knees up, arms resting across them. He had not said much since Ren was taken. His silence had edges. Bakugo stood by the approved wall pad, arms crossed, eyes fixed on nothing. Kirishima said "We know Akiyama notices weird details" Sero nodded.
"He stores everything" Jiro added "Especially if someone says something they do not want him to remember" Asui's eyes narrowed.
"Then if he hears anything, he will try to keep it. Even if he can't send it" Uraraka swallowed.
"Like words" Iida took a breath.
"Then our question is what words he would consider important" Bakugo turned. The room noticed. He said "Names. routes. numbers. stupid labels" Kaminari snapped his fingers.
"Archive Node Four" Everyone stared at him. He held up both hands.
"I heard someone say it in the hall" Iida looked horrified.
"Kaminari!"
"What? I hear things under stress!" Shinso's voice came from the floor.
"Shock" The room turned to him. He did not look up.
"Kaminari heard archive node four. I heard shock. Not full word. Maybe label fragment" Bakugo's eyes sharpened.
"If Akiyama heard shock he would keep it" Todoroki nodded.
"Because it is specific" Jiro leaned forward.
"And because he would not know if it mattered yet" Uraraka's voice was quiet.
"He keeps things before they become useful" Asui said "So we make a list of words he would try to bring back" Iida looked toward the door.
"We should not possess classified information" Bakugo barked a laugh without humor.
"Too late" Kirishima said "We can give the list to Aizawa" Iida looked conflicted for exactly three seconds. Then he took the fixed marker attached to the table board.
"Then we will make it clearly and without unauthorized conclusions" Kaminari said "That sounds like unauthorized conclusions wearing glasses" Iida ignored him. At the top of the board, he wrote: WORDS AKIYAMA WOULD KEEP Bakugo muttered "Too neat" Iida added a line underneath. NOT A RESCUE PLAN Bakugo stared. Then looked away.
"Better" Shinso rose from the floor and took the marker when Iida offered it. He wrote: Archive Node FourShockGarakibaselineroutescontainmentnot mine No one asked how he knew the last two mattered. They all knew. In the lab, Garaki tried pain next. Not increased pain. That would have been crude. He manipulated absence. Pain Suppressor activated in controlled pulses through the graft site, dulling one region at a time while scanners measured scar response. Right shoulder off. Left arm on. Wrist off. ribs on.
old knee injury off. lip on. Then all pain back. Then half off. Then wrong. Ren learned quickly that losing pain could hurt the mind worse than pain hurt the body. Garaki watched.
"Localized suppression produces distress beyond pain relief. Why?" Ren stared at the ceiling. The answer was obvious. It was his. He kept it. Garaki adjusted a control. Pain vanished from both wrists. Ren's body forgot the restraints were there. His hands tried to move and met pressure he could not feel properly. Panic surged, hotter than the fever. Scar Tissue flared around both wrists. Boundary lines thickened.
"There" Garaki said The pain returned. Ren gasped. Garaki leaned closer.
"The distress is not from relief. It is from loss of bodily mapping" Ren closed his eyes. Damn him. Garaki was right. The restraints were worse when he could not feel them. Pain told him where the world touched him. Without it, the world became invisible contact. Garaki said "Pain is part of your orientation" Ren breathed hard.
"It is not yours""No. But the system built around it may be teachable" The room blurred. Pain Gate. That stolen phrase waited under the conversation. Ren refused it. The doctor moved to the second graft. Regenerative Scaffold stimulation came through warmth. Small. Controlled. Triggered at the right shoulder where the extraction had strained deep tissue. The warmth entered, spread, and became hunger. The support line increased. Scar Tissue heated around the shoulder, first defensive, then uncertain.
Containment wavered. For one terrifying second, the scaffold and scar boundary aligned. Not fully. Just enough. The pain in his shoulder reduced for a reason that was not suppression. Inflammation decreased. The joint felt held from the inside by something newly built and wrong. Ren's breath stopped. Garaki saw. So did every machine.
"Repair lattice precursor" Garaki whispered"No" The word tore out of Ren before thought. Scar Tissue flared hard. Pain returned. Fever spiked. The partial alignment collapsed into heat and tremor. Garaki stepped back, eyes bright.
"Volitional rejection? Emotional rejection? Or original Quirk boundary response to perceived identity violation?" Ren shook against the restraints.
"No" Garaki turned to an assistant.
"Note phrase. Identity violation may disrupt integration" Ren's laugh came out ragged.
"You needed a note?" The doctor looked at him.
"Yes" Ren stared. Sometimes the monster was not complicated. Sometimes he simply had no idea which truths were obvious because he had stepped around humanity for so long that he no longer knew where the floor should be. The speaker crackled. All For One's voice was thoughtful.
"Perhaps we should not force the word mine yet" Ren went still. Garaki turned slightly.
"Integration will require eventual ownership""Or use" The room changed. Garaki frowned. All For One continued "A weapon need not feel owned by the hand to cut" Ren's stomach dropped. Garaki considered.
"Operational function before identity integration""Precisely" Ren pulled against the restraints. Pain. Good. Real. His.
"You will not make me use them" All For One's voice was almost gentle.
"Everyone uses what keeps them alive" Ren closed his mouth. Too close. Again. Garaki looked back at the monitors.
"Then we test survival function" The next screen did not show R-2. It showed the imaging room. Not staged. Recorded. Red light. Scanner. Aizawa's scarf. Recovery Girl lunging. Kurose's hands on his wrist. The black fog folding. Ren's own body jerking as the warp took him. Ren watched himself be taken. For one second, he became the boy on the scan bed and the boy restrained in the lab and the body between them. His scars ignited. Pain Suppressor misfired down both arms. Regenerative Scaffold surged at the shoulder.
Scar Tissue did not merely contain. It braced. The restraints creaked. Garaki's voice sharpened.
"Trigger response severe. extraction memory. Social anchors. Identity threat" Ren could not look away. Kurose's grip slipped one centimeter again. The video froze there. Garaki froze it. Kurose falling forward. Ren's name in her mouth. Aizawa mid-lunge. Recovery Girl's hand still on his shoulder. The fog closing. Ren's body shook. No. No. No. All For One's voice entered softly.
"They failed to hold you" The sentence struck with surgical precision. Ren's mouth opened. No sound. Scar Tissue flared along his arms, chest, shoulder, ribs. The Pain Suppressor factor tried to mute the damage. Regenerative Scaffold tried to support the tissue. For one terrible instant, all three aligned under pressure. The restraints screamed. Not broke. Screamed. Garaki shouted "Stop playback!" The screen went dark. Ren's body arched against the frame. Pain vanished. Then returned.
Then vanished in right shoulder only. Warmth built under the damaged tissue. Scar boundary lines spread across both graft sites, linked by thin pale threads under the skin, not full lattice, not external, but connected. Garaki stared.
"Graft bridge" Ren could not breathe. The phrase entered him like another violation. Graft bridge. No. Containment was not acceptance. But this was not only containment now. Something had connected under threat. Something that felt like Scar Tissue using what had been forced inside because the alternative was failing the route back. The lab blurred. Ren dragged in one breath. Then another. He said the only thing he could.
"Not yours" The restraints quieted. The pale lines dimmed but did not disappear. Garaki looked at him with reverence. That was worse than hunger.
"No" the doctor said softly "Not mine" Ren stared at him. Garaki's voice lowered.
"But possible" At U. A., the student list reached Aizawa through three layers of adult disapproval and one layer of Iida's formatting. Kurose handed it to him in the operations room without comment. Aizawa read the title. WORDS AKIYAMA WOULD KEEPNOT A RESCUE PLAN His face did something almost painful. He read the list. Archive Node Four. Shock. Garaki. baseline. routes. containment. not mine. His hand tightened around the page.
Kurose said "They guessed more than they should""They listened more than we wanted""Yes" He looked at not mine.
"Shinso""Likely" Aizawa looked toward the student wing though there were several walls between them.
"They are scared""Yes""They are useful""Yes""I hate that""So do they" Aizawa brought the list to Nezu. Nezu read it twice. Then said "We add it to the working assumptions" Hakamata looked uncertain.
"Student speculation?" Nezu looked at him.
"Student observation of a peer whose habits they know better than we do in some contexts" Recovery Girl leaned over. Her eyes paused on not mine. Her mouth tightened.
"Grafts" No one spoke. She tapped the words.
"Containment. Not mine. If Ren had any way to think during forced grafting, that is where he would stand" Dr. Seno's voice from the speaker was quiet.
"Yes" Aizawa looked at the list again.
"He would keep words" Kurose said "Then we keep a room ready to receive them" Nezu nodded.
"When we recover him, assume he carries data under trauma conditions. No immediate debrief. Medical first. consent before questioning. But prepare channels for voluntary discharge of information" Recovery Girl pointed her cane at him.
"That almost sounded like you were treating him as a person" Nezu bowed.
"I attempt innovation daily" Aizawa did not smile. But his breathing changed. A little. At 18: 22, the second lead emerged from supply movement. Three clinics in different wards had reported missing high-density recovery solution over the last month. Two could be ordinary theft. The third had a delivery signature matching a shell company tied to the demolished diagnostics clinic. Not the storage site. Another facility. A sports rehabilitation center closed for seismic renovation. Power draw high.
Noise complaints dismissed as construction. Basement plans inconsistent. Distance from the archive node: eleven kilometers. Too obvious? Maybe. Too useful to ignore? Yes. Aizawa looked at the map. All Might stepped beside him. This time Nezu did not tell either of them to wait. He said "Adults only. Two teams. One visible perimeter approach. One covert structural assessment. We assume bait. We assume evidence. We assume both are true" Aizawa pulled his scarf into place.
"Finally" All Might's smile did not reach his eyes.
"Finally" Recovery Girl's voice cut across the room.
"You bring him back breathing or I will become impossible in ways none of you have trained for" Present Mic said "Terrifyingly noted" Mandalay stood near the board, eyes on Ragdoll's name.
"And if she is there?" Aizawa looked at her.
"We bring her back too" Mandalay nodded. No promise. Direction. At 18: 40, the second adult search team moved. In the lab, Garaki ordered rest after the graft bridge event. Ren did not believe in the word anymore. Rest meant observation with fewer questions. Rest meant machines measuring what the body did after being pushed too close to a threshold. Rest meant restraints loosened by one degree while assistants watched for another flare. Rest meant fever and hunger and pain returning in pieces. The screen was gone.
Good. The memory was not. Bad. Kurose's hand slipping. Recovery Girl's grip. Aizawa's scarf. The fog. They failed to hold you. Ren turned the sentence over. Not because he believed it. Because it had cut where it wanted to cut. They failed. No. The room failed. The route failed. The warp cheated. The enemy stole. Those were different sentences. The people had held. For point-eight seconds. Enough to make Garaki call it impossible. Enough to make the body remember anchors. Enough to make the graft bridge appear.
Ren breathed through fever.
"They held" His voice was barely there. The assistant near the monitor looked up. Ren did not care.
"They held" His scars warmed. Not flare. Warmth. Pain Suppressor flickered in the right shoulder, but this time the suppression did not spread randomly. It sat at the edge of pain, not closing the door, just lowering the volume enough for breath. Ren froze. The Regenerative Scaffold pulsed under the shoulder, not repairing freely, just supporting the strained area while Scar Tissue held boundaries around both grafts. Three processes. One breath. Not integration. Not yet. A temporary truce. Ren's eyes burned. No.
No, no, no. They are in me. They are not mine. But his body had heard they held and used the stolen tools to keep him conscious. Survival did not ask permission from pride. He hated that. He needed it. He whispered "Containment" The line in his shoulder steadied.
"Not acceptance" The pain stayed lower. Not gone. Lower. He turned his face into the side of the frame and laughed once, silent and broken. Garaki was not in the room to see it. Good. This tiny function had happened without him naming it first. That mattered. Maybe nothing in this room could matter enough. Maybe this could. Ren breathed. They held. Pain lowered, not vanished. Scaffold supported, not claimed. Scar Tissue contained, not surrendered.
For six breaths, the three wrong things inside him made one narrow route through the fever. Then it collapsed. Pain returned. Warmth scattered. The graft sites burned. Ren gasped and almost blacked out. But he remembered. Not for Garaki. For himself. In the operations room, the second search team reached the sports rehabilitation center at dusk. The building looked exactly like bait. Scaffolding outside. construction cover. noise dampening barriers. posted renovation permits. temporary generators. locked gates.
street cameras conveniently down for utility repair. Too many answers in one place. Aizawa hated it. All Might hated it more quietly. Present Mic stood half a block away, one hand pressed to his earpiece, listening to the building.
"Machines below. Not construction rhythm. intermittent pumps. ventilation cycling. Something liquid moving" Power Loader's voice came through comms.
"Basement reinforcement recent. east wall false thickness. utility line draw higher than listed" Ectoplasm clones spread across the rear entry. Hakamata coordinated police containment from outside visual range. Nezu's voice in their ears remained calm.
"Assume evacuation has begun if occupied. Do not rush into empty teeth" Aizawa said "Understood" All Might looked at the building. His fists flexed once. Aizawa glanced at him.
"All Might" The Symbol looked down. Aizawa's voice was rough.
"If he is there, you do not break the room before we know where in it he is" All Might's face twisted. Then steadied.
"Yes" Aizawa turned back.
"Entry" They went in without sirens. The first floor was empty. Second floor empty. Basement locked. False wall behind therapy pool equipment. Power Loader opened it with tools instead of force because evidence mattered and because everyone had been told that rooms could lie. The hidden lower level smelled like antiseptic and bleach. Fresh. Too fresh. Aizawa's scarf lifted. They moved room by room. Storage. Cooling units. Empty medical frames. Discarded nutrient bags. A broken monitor still warm.
A wall chart burned halfway. No Ren. No Ragdoll. No Garaki. In the third room, All Might stopped. On the floor near a drained examination frame lay a strip of scan-safe fabric. White. U. A. issue. Torn at one edge. Blood on it. Small amount. Aizawa knelt before anyone could stop him. He did not touch it. Power Loader photographed. Ectoplasm marked. All Might stood above them, shaking so slightly only Aizawa saw. Present Mic's voice over comm became almost inaudible.
"Shota?" Aizawa stared at the blood. Then at the frame. Then the wall. There were marks on the restraint arm. Not deep. Fingernail? No. Strap friction. Maybe movement. Maybe fighting. Aizawa breathed in. Out.
"He was here" All Might closed his eyes. The building groaned around them. Power Loader shouted from the doorway.
"Evacuation purge!" Aizawa looked up. A wall panel flashed red. The floor vibrated. Not explosion. Flood. Chemical purge through lower drains. Nezu's voice cut through comms.
"Exit now" Aizawa grabbed the evidence bag with the fabric only after Power Loader sealed it. All Might looked toward the next corridor. Aizawa shouted "No!" All Might froze. Aizawa's voice cracked.
"Not blindly!" The Symbol of Peace looked like the words physically struck him. Then he turned. They ran. Behind them, the lower lab filled with white chemical foam that ate paper, blood, and surfaces fast enough to make the air hiss. They escaped with one strip of fabric, three partial supply labels, a broken monitor core, and confirmation that Ren had been in a second site recently enough for blood not to fully dry. Not rescue. Not failure. A route. At U. A., Hana received the update standing. Kurose gave it.
Daichi stood beside Hana with one hand on Bentaro. Kurose said "We found evidence he was at the second site. He was not there when the team entered. The site had been purged. We recovered fabric and blood evidence. We do not yet know his current location" Hana did not fall. Daichi's hand moved toward her back but stopped until she leaned into it. She asked "Alive?" Kurose answered carefully.
"The evidence suggests he was alive at that site recently" Hana closed her eyes. Recently. Alive recently. Not enough. More than nothing. Daichi's voice shook.
"Did he leave anything?" Kurose's face changed.
"We do not know yet" Hana opened her eyes.
"What do you mean?" Kurose hesitated. Then handed them a photo. The examination frame restraint arm, marked by pressure and movement. On the white surface near where a left hand might have reached, there were three short smears of blood. Not letters. Not exactly. Three vertical marks, then one horizontal line beneath. Kurose said "It may be accidental" Daichi looked at the photo. Hana did too. Three lines. One line. Not writing. Not proof. But Ren had always made charts out of less.
Hana whispered "Here" Kurose looked at her. Hana touched the photo.
"He marks presence before explanation" Daichi closed his eyes.
"Here" Kurose's face tightened.
"We will treat it as intentional unless evidence proves otherwise" Hana nodded. For the first time since the abduction, her tears fell without taking her voice.
"Good" In the lab, Ren woke during movement. Not fully. Enough. The restraints had changed. Transport frame. His wrists secured. Chest strapped. Head supported. Fever high. Pain uneven. Left arm heavy. Right shoulder held together by something he did not want to name. The room moved under him. Not R-2. Not U. A. Not the second lab. A corridor. Then darkness. Then a vehicle? No. Not wheels. Smooth. Lift? maybe. He tried to open his eyes wider. A masked assistant noticed.
"Sedation rising" Garaki's voice somewhere nearby.
"Do not over-sedate. We need memory continuity" Ren hated that phrase. Memory continuity. His memory was his. He forced his left fingers to move. One. Two. Three. A restraint edge cut already raw skin. Blood slicked under the fingertip. He pressed against the frame. Not letters. Not words. Presence. Here. Three lines. One base. Enough if someone loved him correctly. Pain Suppressor flickered. Regenerative Scaffold pulled at the skin. Scar Tissue heated to seal the small injury.
Ren forced the fingertip down one more second before the assistant noticed and tightened the hand restraint.
"Stop that" Ren smiled through fever. Too late. Maybe. Maybe not. Garaki leaned into view.
"What did you do?" Ren looked at him. His voice barely worked.
"Made the theft less convenient" Garaki's eyes sharpened. Then the transport lights changed. Ren lost the ceiling again. But not the route. Not all of it. Behind him, somewhere, three lines and a base might remain long enough. Ahead, the room was still learning. So were his routes back.
