U. A. announced the dormitories with a packet. This was the first mistake. The second mistake was the title. MANDATORY RESIDENTIAL SECURITY TRANSITION Kurose read it once and looked at Nezu.
"No" Nezu folded his paws.
"Too forceful?"
"It sounds like the building has decided to eat the students for their own good" Aizawa looked at the first page.
"It also sounds like a hostage relocation notice" Recovery Girl said "I thought that was the point" Kurose pointed at the paper.
"No" The meeting took place in Nezu's office because the decision had become too large for any single classroom and too personal for a general assembly. After Kamino, U. A. had to do what it should have done earlier: pull students closer, reduce travel exposure, control campus access, coordinate training, and stop pretending that ordinary commutes were still ordinary after villains had crossed every boundary adults claimed existed. Dormitories were necessary. Necessary did not mean harmless.
Nezu opened a new document. DORM TRANSITION Kurose stared.
"Better" Aizawa said "Still bland""Bland is safer than predatory" Recovery Girl lifted her cane.
"Add consent language before I lose patience" Nezu typed. Dorm TransitionResidential safety measure with student and guardian briefing, consent review where applicable, and individual support conditions. Kurose read it.
"Acceptable" Aizawa looked at her.
"That was fast""The previous title lowered my standards" Nezu's eyes brightened.
"Progress through contrast" Recovery Girl said "Do not sound proud of bad paperwork" Nezu wisely did not. The general student version would go to Class 1-A that afternoon. The Provisional Track version required a separate room. Of course it did. Everything involving Ren and Shinso required a separate room now, not because they were fragile in the simple way people misused the word, but because rooms had to prove they understood what they were asking before the question reached them.
Ren received the dorm briefing in R-2 at fourteen degrees. Fourteen had become less dramatic after two days, which Ren resented because progress should not become boring before he decided what it meant. His left wrist was wrapped in the newest brace prototype made of cloth, foam, and a removable sensor patch that Hatsume had not been allowed to call a baby. It did not tighten when Graft Lattice flickered. It did not light up. It sent private vibration feedback only when he asked it to test mode. He distrusted it.
He also liked that it distrusted public display. Both. Always both. Hana sat beside the bed. Daichi sat beside her with Bentaro leaning against his knee. Kurose stood at the foot of the bed with the new packet. Aizawa leaned by the wall. Recovery Girl occupied the monitor station and looked prepared to fight every noun. Nezu appeared on screen this time because Ren had said yes to that and not yet had become now.
The title on the packet read: DORM TRANSITION Under it, in handwriting Kurose had clearly added before printing: NOT PROTECTIVE CUSTODY Ren stared.
"Good subtitle" Kurose nodded.
"It was necessary" Aizawa said "You wrote it too large""No" Recovery Girl said "It could be larger" Ren looked at Hana. She was trying very hard to smile normally. That meant she was terrified. Daichi's hand rested on Bentaro's handle with the careful pressure of someone holding an old object because the new problem was too large to hold. Nezu spoke first.
"After Kamino, U. A. is moving Hero Course students into on-campus dormitories. This reduces exposure during travel, centralizes emergency response, allows faster communication, and creates better supervision for license preparation" Ren nodded.
"Class 1-A""Yes. Class 1-B as well, with staggered transition. Provisional Track requires individual arrangements""Because of medical" Recovery Girl said "Medical, safety, common sense, and the universe owing me fewer surprises" Kurose said "For you, the proposal is a medical-adjacent dorm room first. Not a permanent infirmary bed. Not R-2. A student room in the residential wing closest to medical access, with modifications you approve" Ren looked at her.
"Student room""Yes""Not medical room""Correct""Near medical""Yes""Sounds like compromise" Aizawa said "It is" Ren looked at the packet again. A student room. The words should have been easier than Hero Course. They were worse. Hero Course was a door. The dorm was a room behind it. Rooms had become complicated. Cells. labs. R-2. rooms on probation. rooms with signs. rooms that kept him alive. rooms that held him. rooms he could not leave until someone else unlocked something.
rooms where adults talked about his body in words he had to interrupt before the words became ownership. A student room. Near medical. Modified. Safe. Maybe. Ren's wrist gate flickered. He felt it.
"Stop" The private vibration in the brace gave one soft pulse under his own command, confirming the gate had started to narrow. No external light. No alarm. No room attention except the people already watching him because they cared. Pain stayed. Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. Kurose. Aizawa. Nezu on screen. dorm packet. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. scared. not lab. not custody. still scared" Nezu's ears lowered slightly.
"Thank you" Ren opened his eyes.
"For being scared?"
"For saying it before the room guessed badly" Kurose looked down at the packet.
"The room itself has conditions. We wrote initial ones. You can add, reject, or revise" Ren looked at the first page. PROVISIONAL TRACK DORM CONDITIONS — REN AKIYAMA Student room, not medical custody. No hidden surveillance. Medical sensors private-first and limited to agreed parameters. Emergency alert visible to staff only if student triggers stop, body-map loss is detected, or medical threshold is crossed. No public display of Graft Lattice activity.
Door opens from inside unless medical emergency override is active. Emergency override logs automatically and is reviewed afterward. Parent access schedule flexible during transition. R-2 signs may move only if Ren chooses. Home room remains home room. Ren stopped reading at that line. Home room remains home room. Hana made a small sound. Daichi looked at the ceiling. Ren's throat tightened. He looked at Kurose.
"You wrote that?" Kurose shook her head. Hana's voice was quiet.
"I asked for it" Ren looked at her. She tried to smile and failed honestly.
"Your room at home stays your room" Daichi's voice came rougher.
"A dorm is not replacement" Ren looked down at the blanket. His left hand moved. Hana waited. He nodded. She touched his hair. A dorm is not replacement. A student room. A way back. Maybe not every room with a bed became a claim. Nezu said softly "The dorm is intended to reduce danger, not remove family" Ren's voice was thin.
"Dangerous distinction""Yes" Aizawa stepped closer.
"You can say no today" Ren looked at him.
"To dorm?"
"To agreeing today. The broader safety transition is happening for the school. Your placement can wait until conditions are clear" Recovery Girl said "Medical placement can definitely wait if people become stupid" Ren breathed.
"I want to see the room" Hana's hand paused. Daichi looked at him. Ren did not look away from the packet.
"I do not want to agree to paper. I want to see the door" Aizawa nodded once.
"Good" Kurose wrote. Site visit before decision. Recovery Girl pointed at the paper.
"Wheelchair visit only. No standing in emotional hallways" Ren looked at her.
"Emotional hallways?"
"You know exactly what you did two days ago""Corridor mobility drill""Emotional hallway" Ren accepted the correction with no dignity. Shinso's dorm briefing happened in a smaller conference room with fewer adults and more silence. He had requested no screen, no semicircle seating, and no chair with its back to the door. U. A. provided all three conditions, which made him suspicious but not enough to reject the room. Kurose sat at one side of the table. Aizawa stood by the wall.
Nezu sat across from Shinso but slightly angled, not directly opposite. The packet in front of Shinso had the same title. DORM TRANSITION Under it, Kurose had written: NOT A RESCUE LABEL Shinso stared at it. A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
"That subtitle is pointed""Yes" Kurose said"At me?"
"At the room" He looked at her.
"Good answer" Nezu spoke carefully.
"U. A. is moving Hero Course students into dormitories. Because you are entering Provisional Track, we are offering you on-campus housing attached to your training schedule and support conditions" Shinso leaned back.
"Offering""Yes""Not requiring" Nezu's paws folded.
"Your current course status differs from the Hero Course cohorts, so the administrative route is different. However, if you accept Provisional Track housing, U. A. will formalize it as part of your conditional training support" Shinso looked at the packet but did not touch it.
"Why?" Kurose said "Safety. training access. consistent supervision. consent protocols. reduced commute exposure. less pressure on whatever home arrangements become strained by Provisional Track" His eyes lifted sharply.
"Whatever home arrangements" Kurose did not flinch.
"I am not asking for details you do not want to give today""Good" Aizawa spoke.
"Villains know U. A. students are targets. Provisional Track increases your visibility inside the school even if we limit public details. Dorms make route control easier" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"So danger enrolled me again" Nezu's eyes softened.
"Danger informs the offer. It does not own the reason you may accept" Shinso stared at him.
"That sounds like something from the packet""I wrote it after speaking with Kurose""Of course" Kurose slid the packet forward by two inches, then stopped. Shinso looked at the movement. Then took it himself. Good. He read. PROVISIONAL TRACK DORM CONDITIONS — HITOSHI SHINSO Student housing, not protective holding. No room entry without consent except emergency. No mandatory Brainwashing availability outside scheduled training. No requests to manage student panic in dorm spaces unless prior protocol exists.
No dormmate informed of Quirk details beyond student-approved summary. No curfew enforcement by peer pressure. No guardian-contact assumptions without student review. Option for quiet room placement. Option for phased integration with Class 1-A common areas. Right to refuse family-style invitations without explanation. Shinso stared at the last line. Right to refuse family-style invitations without explanation. He had not expected that to be written. He hated that it had to be.
He hated more that he was glad it was. Kurose said "The Akiyamas asked whether meals could be flexible if you ever wanted to join Ren during transition. I told them the first rule would be your right to say no without managing anyone's feelings" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"They asked?"
"Yes""Why?" Kurose did not smile.
"Because they like you""That is not an administrative reason""No" He looked at Aizawa. Aizawa said "Some things in school are not administrative" Shinso hated that sentence. It sounded dangerous. It also sounded warm in a way he did not want near paperwork. He looked down again.
"No rescue label" Kurose nodded.
"Correct""No host-family implication""Correct""No calling this placement because my home is bad""Correct""No one looks relieved if I stay" Nezu said "We will try" Shinso's eyes cut to him. Nezu corrected himself.
"We will structure the room so your decision does not become our relief" Shinso nodded once.
"Better" Aizawa stepped away from the wall.
"You can say no""I know""Say it" Shinso glared.
"I can say no""Again""I can say no""Do you want to?" Shinso looked at the packet. Quiet room placement. Phased integration. No mandatory availability. Right to refuse family-style invitations. A dorm meant people near doors. people in common rooms. people asking if he wanted food. people hearing him leave. people knowing if he came back late. people who might call that care. people who might make care feel like surveillance without meaning to.
A dorm also meant no commute through streets where anyone could have learned his route. It meant training access. It meant Provisional Track did not stop at the gym door. It meant maybe, someday, a room that did not ask him to prove he deserved it. He said "I want to see it first" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Kurose wrote. Site visit before decision. Nezu's smile was small.
"An excellent answer" Shinso pointed at him.
"Do not sound relieved" Nezu closed his mouth. Kurose looked pleased. Aizawa looked tired. Progress. Class 1-A received the general dorm briefing after lunch. The reaction was exactly as chaotic as Aizawa had expected and somehow still worse. Kaminari nearly fell out of his chair.
"We are living at school?" Jiro looked at him.
"You are saying that like we do not already practically live here emotionally" Sero said "Do we get to decorate?" Mina gasped.
"Rooms" Aizawa said "Do not make rooms a competition" Bakugo immediately said "I will win" Kirishima said "At rooms?"
"At everything" Todoroki looked thoughtful.
"What defines victory in room?" Bakugo stared at him.
"Having the best one" Todoroki considered.
"Best is subjective" Bakugo pointed.
"Do not start" Iida stood with enough force to make the desk tremble.
"Class residential transition is a serious institutional trust measure that demands maturity, cleanliness, punctuality, and proper communal conduct" Mina whispered "He is already dorm leader" Sero whispered "He was born dorm leader" Aizawa erased part of the board with dead eyes.
"Sit before you legislate furniture" Iida sat. Uraraka was quieter than most. Midoriya noticed. So did Asui. Uraraka's hands rested on her lap, fingers tight around each other. Dorms meant safety. It also meant family expenses, distance, guilt, relief, opportunity, and the kind of school life she had probably imagined but never like this. Asui leaned closer.
"You okay?" Uraraka smiled.
"Both" Asui nodded.
"Good word" At the back, Bakugo stared at the board and did not shout again. Dorms meant he had not been captured. Dorms meant Ren had. Dorms meant All Might had retired. Dorms meant the school was changing shape around the hole villains had left. His face made none of that easy to see. Kirishima saw enough. He did not say anything. Good. Todoroki listened with the expression of someone hearing the word home and refusing to let it decide anything too quickly. Aizawa finished the briefing.
"Parents and guardians will be contacted. No one moves today. No one packs tonight unless instructed. No room competition. No visiting Provisional Track rooms without permission. No making dorms into symbolic fresh starts" Kaminari lifted a hand.
"What about normal fresh starts?" Kurose, present by the door, answered "Ask the fresh start first" Kaminari lowered his hand.
"I am not equipped for this level of metaphor management" Jiro said "None of us are" Aizawa looked at the class.
"You will learn" The site visit happened in the late afternoon. Ren went first because Recovery Girl wanted maximum daylight, low corridor traffic, and no students gawking around medical wheels. The student room was on the first floor of a residential wing connected by a short secured hallway to the medical access route. Not R-2. Not quite Heights Alliance proper.
A transitional room, Kurose had called it, and then immediately written transitional does not mean temporary value on a sticky note because language was a disease now. Ren approached the door in his chair. Hana walked on his left. Daichi on his right. Aizawa ahead. Kurose behind. Recovery Girl beside him, one hand on the chair, not pushing unless needed. Nezu waited at the door. The plaque was blank. Ren stared at it.
"No name?" Nezu said "Not until you choose" Ren looked at the handle.
"Does it lock?"
"Yes. From inside. Staff override only during emergency, logged and reviewed""Window?"
"Yes. Opens partially with safety stop you control""Medical sensor?"
"Optional. Private-first. Not installed yet""Cameras?"
"No" Ren looked at Aizawa. Aizawa said "No cameras" He looked at Recovery Girl.
"No cameras" He looked at Kurose.
"No cameras" He looked at Hana.
"No cameras" she said softly Daichi added "Bentaro inspected the concept remotely" Recovery Girl closed her eyes.
"Do not give the umbrella fictional clearance powers" Ren breathed.
"Open" Nezu opened the door. The room was smaller than his room at home and larger than R-2 felt after weeks of medical attention. A bed stood against one wall. A desk. A shelf. A soft chair. A low table reachable from seated height. A closet. A blank board near the bed for signs if he chose. A small emergency stop panel by the bed and another near the desk, both covered with transparent guards so they would not be pressed accidentally. A rail by the wall, not medical-looking if one was generous. Curtains.
A window looking toward a small courtyard. No machines humming. No monitor unless he chose. No red lights. No labels. No room smell yet. Just space. Ren did not move. Recovery Girl said "Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"Residential wing. transitional student room. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. Kurose. Aizawa. Nezu. door open. bed. desk. window. no cameras. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. scared. not R-2. not home. maybe room" No one corrected maybe. Good. Hana stepped inside first only after Ren nodded. Daichi followed. Aizawa stayed by the door. Kurose stayed at the threshold. Recovery Girl moved the chair in slowly. Ren looked around from seated height. The desk was reachable. The shelf was too high. He pointed.
"Too high" Nezu nodded.
"Adjusted""The stop panel looks dramatic" Recovery Girl said "It is a stop panel""Can it look less like room is expecting failure?" Kurose wrote.
"Covered panel integrated into bedside shelf?" Ren nodded.
"Better""The board?" Ren looked at the blank board. He imagined the signs. ROOM STILL ON PROBATION THE GRAFTS FOLLOW RULES BETTER IS ALLOWED TO BE GOOD AND WRONG AT THE SAME TIME The soup cat. He imagined them here. The thought did not feel like betrayal. That frightened him.
"I choose later" Hana nodded.
"Yes" Daichi walked to the window.
"It has courtyard view" Ren looked. The courtyard was small. A tree. two benches. gravel path. nothing heroic. Good.
"Can leave?" Aizawa said "When medically cleared. With route protocol at first""Route back?"
"Bed. chair. medical hall. courtyard bench. door remains visible" Ren looked at him.
"You mapped it""Yes""Good" Aizawa accepted the word without making it larger. Hana stood beside the bed. Her hand rested on the blanket folded at the foot. Then she took it away. Ren saw.
"Hard?" She turned.
"Yes""Because room""Yes""Because leaving home""Yes""Because safe" Her face cracked.
"Yes" Daichi stepped closer to her. Hana breathed.
"I hate that this is safer" Ren's throat tightened. Daichi said "Then we hate it and choose carefully" Ren looked at them. The sentence had become family law. He nodded.
"Carefully" They did not agree that day. They made a list. Shelf lower. Stop panel integrated. No red alerts. Medical sensor optional. Parent access. Window control. Door sign chosen by Ren. No staff using phrase residential custody. No one moving R-2 signs without permission. Home room remains home room. When they left, Ren looked back once. The blank plaque on the door looked less like a threat than before. Not safe. Not yet. But it had waited for his name. That counted. Shinso's site visit was quieter.
His proposed room was in a nearby first-floor hall, close enough to Provisional Track routes and far enough from the busiest 1-A common path that he would not have to perform sociability every time he wanted water. Aizawa opened the door and let Shinso stand outside as long as he needed. Kurose stayed beside him. Nezu had not come. Shinso had said the principal made rooms feel like decisions. Nezu had accepted the insult as useful data.
The room had a bed, a desk, a closet, a shelf, plain curtains, and a window looking toward the same small courtyard from a different angle. Shinso stared.
"It is normal" Aizawa said "Yes""Suspicious""Yes" Kurose said "You can choose quiet modifications. Sound dampening. alternate lighting. lock review. no automatic common-room check-ins" Shinso stepped inside. The floor did not creak. The room did not know him. That was good. That was bad. He walked to the window. From there, he could see the courtyard tree. No one else outside. Good. He looked at the desk.
"Too clean" Kurose said "You can make it worse""That sounds like permission""It is" He looked at her.
"Dangerous""Yes" Aizawa leaned against the doorframe.
"Thoughts" Shinso looked around.
"No posters from staff""Accepted""No motivational notes""Accepted""No surprise welcome basket" Kurose said "Mina will need warning""Strong warning""Accepted""No one says this is my first real home" The room went very still. Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Kurose's face softened and hardened at once.
"Accepted" Shinso looked at the bed.
"If I leave for weekend or break, no one asks if I am sure in that voice" Kurose wrote.
"Accepted""If I stay during break, no one makes that tragic either" Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" Shinso swallowed.
"If the Akiyamas invite me for dinner, I get to say no without being a project" Kurose's voice was quiet.
"Yes" He looked at the window again.
"And if I say yes?" Aizawa answered.
"Then you are a person eating dinner" Shinso closed his eyes. That answer was unfair. Not because it was wrong. Because it was simple enough to hurt. He opened his eyes.
"Room is acceptable pending modifications" Kurose wrote it down.
"Good""Do not sound relieved" She looked at him.
"I am not relieved. I am glad" Shinso considered.
"Different sentence""Yes" He accepted that. Barely. That evening, Ren and Shinso met in the courtyard by accident that had been scheduled by three adults pretending it was not scheduled. Ren arrived in his chair with Daichi pushing after explicit permission and Hana carrying a thermos. Shinso arrived from the opposite hallway with Aizawa far enough behind to count as supervision and close enough to count as threat. Kurose appeared on a bench with a folder, which fooled no one.
The courtyard tree moved slightly in the evening air. Ren looked at Shinso.
"Site visit?"
"Room""Suspicious?"
"Normal""Worse""Yes" Daichi parked the chair near the bench and stepped back after Ren touched the brake. Hana sat on the bench with the thermos. Aizawa leaned against the wall. Kurose opened her folder and pretended to read. Shinso looked at all of them.
"This is staged" Ren said "Badly" Kurose said "We are new at subtle family-adjacent logistics" Shinso froze. Hana looked at Kurose. Daichi looked at the tree. Aizawa closed his eyes. Kurose lowered the folder.
"I said adjacent. Not assignment. Not adoption. Not rescue. Not project" Shinso's hands disappeared into his pockets.
"Still a dangerous phrase""Yes" Ren looked at him.
"Do you want her to retract?" Shinso stared at him. Then looked away.
"No" Hana's shoulders lowered by a fraction. Daichi breathed. Kurose nodded once.
"Then the phrase remains on probation" Shinso muttered "Everything is on probation" Ren said "Healthy institution""Disgusting phrase""Accurate?"
"Unfortunately" Hana poured broth into two cups. Shinso stared at the second cup. Hana held it but did not offer it forward.
"I brought extra. You can say no. You can say not today. You can say yes. No one will make it mean dinner, family, rescue, or emotional progress" Shinso looked at the cup. Then at Ren. Ren said "The broth is aggressively acceptable" Hana sighed.
"That is not how reviews work" Shinso's mouth twitched. He stepped closer and took the cup.
"Yes to broth. No meaning yet" Hana nodded.
"Accepted" Daichi looked at Bentaro, absent from the courtyard because umbrellas had not been invited.
"Bentaro would approve" Recovery Girl's voice somehow came from Ren's portable monitor.
"The umbrella approves nothing" Everyone looked at the device. Ren stared.
"Were you listening?"
"Medical supervision""That was broth commentary""Nutrition is medical" Shinso looked at Ren.
"Your life is surveillance with better ethics" Ren said "On probation" They drank broth in the courtyard. Not dinner. Not family. Not rescue. Broth. A student room waited for Ren with no name on the door. A normal suspicious room waited for Shinso with no posters and no tragic meaning installed. Class 1-A somewhere above them was almost certainly arguing about furniture despite Aizawa's direct warning. The school had become a place trying to hold students closer without closing its hands too tightly.
It would fail sometimes. All rooms did. That was why rooms needed doors. Ren looked at the courtyard path.
"Dorms mean routes" Shinso followed his gaze.
"Routes mean exits" Ren nodded.
"And returns" Shinso sipped broth.
"Annoyingly hopeful""Careful possibility""Worse phrase""Better phrase""Still disgusting" Hana smiled into her cup. Daichi looked away, eyes bright. Kurose wrote something in the folder. Aizawa saw.
"What did you write?" Kurose closed the folder.
"Nothing""Liar""Teacher""Worse" She smiled faintly. The evening air moved through the tree. Ren's wrist gate stayed quiet. Pain present. Not too much. Shinso held the cup with both hands and did not look like he knew what to do with the warmth. That was okay. Warmth did not require immediate interpretation. The dorm decision had not been made. Not fully. But the rooms had been seen. The doors had opened. No one had pushed them through. For today, that was what safety looked like. A room with a way out.
And, maybe, a way back.
