Move-in day at U. A. began with a warning from Aizawa. This was normal. Move-in day at U. A. also began with a second warning from Kurose, a medical warning from Recovery Girl, a structural warning from Power Loader, a social warning from Iida, a snack-related warning from Sato, and an unauthorized decorative proposal from Mina that was intercepted before it became wallpaper. This was less normal. The board in Class 1-A's temporary common room had five written instructions.
NO ROOM COMPETITIONNO SURPRISE WELCOMINGASK BEFORE ENTERINGASK BEFORE DECORATINGNO SYMBOLIC FRESH STARTS Under them, in smaller writing, someone had added: NORMAL FRESH STARTS REQUIRE REVIEW Kaminari stared at the board while holding a cardboard box labeled chargers, snacks, misc, possible destiny.
"Why does everything require review now?" Jiro walked past him with a box of clothes.
"Because you label boxes possible destiny""It was a joke""It is evidence" Sero leaned around the doorframe.
"Can we have symbolic snacks?" Aizawa's voice came from the hallway.
"No" Sero recoiled.
"He hears concepts now" Mina appeared behind him with a roll of colored tape and an expression of innocent treason.
"What about non-symbolic tape?" Kurose held out one hand without looking up from her clipboard.
"Give it here" Mina hugged the tape to her chest.
"It is for marking common storage" Kurose's eyes lifted.
"Mina" Mina sighed and surrendered it.
"I am being oppressed by process" Iida stepped into the common room with three folders.
"Process is what prevents chaos during group relocation" Bakugo walked past him carrying one box under each arm.
"Your face prevents joy during group relocation" Iida inhaled. Then visibly chose not to become a speech. Growth. Uraraka whispered "Good stop" Iida adjusted his glasses.
"Thank you" Bakugo stopped.
"Did you just get praised for not talking?" Kirishima grinned.
"Training is everywhere" Bakugo looked disgusted.
"Everyone is broken" Todoroki stood near the window with a box labeled winter clothes and kettle. He looked at the board, then at the common room, then at the hallway.
"This is not as chaotic as expected" On cue, Kaminari tripped over his own box and spilled chargers across the floor. Jiro said "Wait" Todoroki nodded.
"There it is" The dorm building itself was new in the way institutional buildings pretended to be welcoming by smelling like clean wood, fresh paint, and anxiety. Class 1-A's main common room had wide windows, low tables, a kitchen, couches, and enough space for teenagers to turn safety into noise if left unsupervised for more than three minutes. Most students moved through it with visible excitement. Most also carried something heavier underneath. Kamino had moved in before them.
It lived in the way Midoriya looked toward the nearest exit before setting down his box. In the way Bakugo checked blind corners without admitting it. In the way Todoroki stood with his back not quite to the wall. In the way Uraraka touched the edge of her room door and smiled only after taking a breath. In the way Iida read every safety notice twice. In the way Kirishima laughed loudly and then looked around to see who needed him quieter. Dorms were supposed to be a solution. U. A.
was learning that every solution arrived carrying the shape of the problem that made it necessary. Aizawa stood in the center of the common room and waited until noise lowered enough to become answerable.
"Class" Everyone froze in different postures of guilt. He looked at the board.
"Dorms do not erase what happened. They do not make you safer because the building is magic. They make coordination easier, routes shorter, and supervision faster. Your job is not to become careless because a bed is on campus" The room listened. Even Kaminari, who was still kneeling among chargers. Aizawa continued "Rules are posted. Follow them. If you want to visit a room, ask. If someone says no, leave. If someone says not now, leave.
If someone says maybe later, that does not mean wait outside like a haunted raccoon" Kaminari lifted a hand slowly.
"Is this about me hypothetically?"
"It is about the class species""Harsh""Accurate" Kurose stepped beside him.
"Ren and Shinso will move into Provisional Track rooms today. Those rooms are not extensions of your common room. Do not visit without explicit permission. Do not bring gifts without asking. Do not write cards as a group without asking. Do not turn their arrival into proof that everything is better" Mina lowered the little notebook she had been hiding. Kurose looked directly at her.
"Mina" Mina sighed.
"It was not a card yet""That is not a defense" Uraraka raised her hand.
"What can we do?" Kurose's expression softened slightly.
"Ask. Leave space. Behave normally after asking what normal is for the person in front of you" Asui nodded.
"Normal is not universal""Correct" Jiro looked toward the hallway.
"What if we mess up?" Aizawa said "Correct before defending yourself" The room absorbed that. Good. Difficult. Training. At 11: 00, Ren's room received its first object. Not a bed. The bed was already there. Not a monitor. The monitor was still optional. Not a sign. The first object was a folded blanket from home. Hana carried it in both hands as if it were ceremonial and then stopped at the threshold because ceremonial was dangerous today. Ren sat in his chair just outside the room.
The blank plaque still waited beside the door. No name yet. A temporary paper had been taped above the handle. STUDENT ROOMNOT MEDICAL CUSTODYNOT REPLACEMENT HOMEON PROBATION Recovery Girl had objected to "on probation" because rooms did not need encouragement to misbehave. Ren had won that one. Barely. Aizawa stood inside by the desk. Kurose stood near the blank board. Dr. Seno checked the optional sensor dock, still unplugged. Daichi held a small box labeled room things, not too many.
Bentaro leaned in the hallway because Recovery Girl had banned umbrella entry until the room completed initial safety review. Ren looked at the blanket.
"That one?" Hana nodded.
"Your winter blanket""It is not winter""No" He looked at her. She did not explain too much. Good. He nodded.
"Bed" Hana stepped inside and placed it at the foot of the bed. Not spread out. Folded. Waiting. That helped. Daichi lifted the box.
"Desk?" Ren looked at the desk.
"Yes" Daichi placed the box on the desk and opened it only halfway. Inside were three notebooks, one pen case, a framed photo facing down, a small repair kit, a stress ball Hana had bought and Ren had never admitted using, and a spare inspection tag for Bentaro that Daichi had included with the expression of a man preparing for legal war. Recovery Girl saw it.
"No" Daichi covered the tag.
"No what?"
"The umbrella does not need dorm documentation""Respectfully, Bentaro's chain of custody—""No" Ren looked toward the box.
"Tag stays in box" Recovery Girl narrowed her eyes.
"Fine. Box probation" Daichi looked satisfied. Kurose watched Ren.
"Signs?" Ren looked at the blank board. Too much blank space. Too much possibility. This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Too much chance to make the room into R-2, or into home, or into something that failed both. He breathed.
"Only one today" Hana nodded.
"Which?" Ren looked at the wall. Not Room Still on Probation. That was already on the door. Not Better is allowed to be good and wrong. Too much for first day. Not The grafts follow rules. I choose meaning. Important, but this room did not need to begin with Graft Lattice. He looked at Kurose.
"Write" She uncapped the marker. Ren said "A room with a way out is allowed to become a place to return to" The marker paused. Hana covered her mouth. Daichi looked down. Aizawa looked toward the window. Recovery Girl muttered something about emotional density. Kurose wrote the sentence in careful letters. A ROOM WITH A WAY OUT IS ALLOWED TO BECOME A PLACE TO RETURN TO Ren stared at it. The room did not become home. Good. It became less impossible. The plaque remained blank. That was also good.
Shinso's first object was a pillow. Not a symbolic pillow. Not a gift pillow. His own pillow. He carried it under one arm with a box balanced against his hip and glared at anyone who looked like they might find that emotionally meaningful. Kurose walked beside him. Aizawa carried nothing because Shinso had said help with boxes would make the hallway feel like relocation. Aizawa had accepted the sentence and looked slightly proud of how irritatingly precise it was. The door to Shinso's room had a temporary sign too.
STUDENT ROOMNOT A RESCUE LABELNO SURPRISE MEANING Shinso stared at the last line.
"You wrote that because of me" Kurose said "Yes""Good" He opened the door himself. The room was still too normal. Bed. desk. closet. window. shelf. quiet walls. He stepped inside and stood in the center. No one followed until he looked back and said "Fine" Kurose entered. Aizawa remained at the doorway. Shinso placed the pillow on the bed. Then the box on the desk. He opened it. Not much inside. Clothes. notebooks. capture scarf training notes. a cheap alarm clock. two worn books.
one packet of instant coffee he was too young to be this emotionally attached to. A small card from the Akiyamas that he had not opened and had not thrown away. Kurose looked at the card.
"Do you want to open it?"
"No""Do you want it moved somewhere?"
"No""Desk?"
"Yes" She did not touch it. He moved it himself. Good. Aizawa looked around the doorway.
"Modifications" Shinso looked at the room.
"Curtain heavier""Accepted""Desk facing door""Accepted""No automatic common-room check-ins""Already written""No one calls this cozy at me" Kurose wrote. Aizawa said "At you?"
"Yes. If they say it about the room when I am not present, I do not care""Accepted" Shinso looked at the blank wall above the desk.
"Whiteboard" Kurose said "What size?"
"Small""For signs?" He grimaced.
"For conditions. Not signs""Different sentence""Yes" Aizawa looked at him.
"First condition?" Shinso looked at the room. It was quiet. Too quiet. He could hear the hallway, but not too clearly. Good. He could see the door from the desk. Good. The window opened only partially but enough for air. Good. The bed was his if he accepted that his could be used without becoming trap. He said "I can leave and still be allowed back" Kurose's marker stopped against her clipboard. Aizawa's expression did not change. That was his version of care. Kurose wrote it.
I CAN LEAVE AND STILL BE ALLOWED BACK Shinso stared at the words.
"Too much" Aizawa said "True things often are""That is a Ren sentence""He is contagious" Shinso sighed.
"Put it on small board when it arrives. Not wall" Kurose nodded.
"Accepted" The common room met Ren by accident that had been scheduled more honestly than the courtyard. At 15: 00, Ren's medical route passed the edge of Class 1-A's common room on the way back from a corridor assessment. Recovery Girl had approved three minutes of common-area visual exposure, which sounded like a wildlife study and made Ren deeply suspicious.
He arrived in his chair with Hana behind him, Daichi carrying the small box of room things now mostly empty, Recovery Girl to his left, and Aizawa ahead like a human warning sign. Class 1-A did not freeze. Not fully. They had been warned. That helped. Mina did not cheer. Kaminari did not wave with both hands. Iida stood and then sat halfway because standing too fast might be formal pressure. Uraraka smiled but did not move closer. Asui raised one hand slightly.
Todoroki looked toward the chair brakes, the hallway, then Ren's face. Bakugo kept arranging something on a shelf with aggressive disinterest. Midoriya looked at Ren, then down at his own hands, then back up without reaching for his notebook. Progress. Sero spoke first.
"Neutral operational presence acknowledged" Ren stared. Shinso, who had appeared in the hallway from the opposite direction at exactly the worst possible time, said "Absolutely not" Mina whispered "We workshopped it" Kurose's voice came from behind Ren.
"You were told not to" Mina pointed at Sero.
"He workshopped it" Sero looked betrayed.
"I thought we agreed on shared liability" Jiro shook her head.
"No. You said the phrase and we all stared" Kaminari nodded.
"It was a warning stare" Ren looked at the common room. Noise. boxes. students. half-assembled shelves. Todoroki's kettle on a table for reasons no one had stopped yet. Kaminari's charger nest. Yaoyorozu labeling communal supplies. Iida trying not to regulate everything and failing in installments. Class. Not his. Not yet. Maybe. He breathed.
"Common room on probation" Mina's face lit up.
"That means it exists enough to be judged" Ren considered.
"Yes" She looked moved by that and visibly restrained herself from saying something too large. Good. Bakugo turned from the shelf.
"Your room done?" Ren looked at him.
"No""Good" That was all. Ren understood. If the room were done in one day, it would be suspicious.
"Good" Ren said Bakugo clicked his tongue and went back to the shelf. Kirishima watched the exchange with a face full of emotional violence. Bakugo snapped "Stop looking at me like a wet dog" Kirishima whispered "I am proud of your bad delivery""Die" Aizawa said "No dying in the common room" Kaminari raised a hand.
"What about emotional dying?"
"No""Strict dorm" Shinso stepped into the common room entrance but not farther. Jiro looked at him.
"Do you want us to acknowledge you or pretend not to notice?" Shinso stared.
"That is the best terrible question" Jiro shrugged.
"I am improving" Shinso looked at the room. Then at Ren. Then at Aizawa.
"Acknowledge minimally" Kaminari lifted two fingers.
"Minimal" Mina said "Minimal welcome" Iida looked like he wanted to define minimal and fought himself hard enough to sweat. Asui said "You can stand there" Shinso looked at her.
"Thanks" No one moved closer. No one made him join. He stayed by the entrance. That counted. Ren stayed for exactly three minutes. At two minutes and forty seconds, the common room began to feel less like a room and more like expectation wearing furniture. He looked at Recovery Girl.
"Stop" The room stopped. Not dramatically. But enough. Aizawa nodded.
"Route back" Hana unlocked the chair after Ren nodded. Daichi moved aside. Class 1-A remained still. Ren looked at them.
"Good room" Mina covered her mouth with both hands. Kaminari whispered "We got rated" Jiro whispered "Do not ruin it" Bakugo muttered "Barely passed" Ren heard. He looked at him.
"Probation" Bakugo's mouth twitched.
"Tch" Then Ren left. Shinso watched him go. The common room waited. No one demanded Shinso follow. No one demanded he stay. After a few seconds, Uraraka looked at him.
"Do you want tea? No meaning" Shinso stared. Todoroki, from beside the kettle, lifted it slightly.
"I have tea" Kaminari whispered "Of course he has tea" Shinso looked at the kettle. Then at Uraraka. Then at the exit. A route back. He said "Yes to tea. No meaning" Todoroki nodded.
"Accepted" Mina looked at the ceiling like she might explode quietly. Jiro put a hand on her shoulder.
"Contain it""I am containing""You are vibrating""Containment has texture" Shinso entered the common room by three steps. Not all the way. Enough for tea. No meaning. Maybe some. Not assigned. That counted too. Evening came with the first dorm dinner. Class 1-A had attempted to organize shared cooking and discovered that hero students were capable of saving lives but not necessarily planning rice quantities. Sato intervened.
Yaoyorozu created additional serving utensils after asking whether that counted as misuse of Quirk in dorm context. Aizawa said no with visible exhaustion. Kaminari burned something that had not been assigned to him. Bakugo took over one pan while loudly declaring everyone else incompetent and produced food so good the room resented him. Ren did not attend dinner in the common room. Not yet.
His meal came to his transitional room, where Hana and Daichi sat with him while Recovery Girl conducted a twenty-minute argument with his calorie intake and won. The door stayed partly open because Ren had chosen it. Not because adults wanted visibility. Because he wanted hallway sound without room invasion. Shinso ate in the common room at the edge of the table. No one made a speech. No one pointed out that he was there. Kaminari asked him to pass soy sauce and then looked relieved that the sentence was normal.
Shinso passed it.
"Do not look relieved" Kaminari froze.
"Right. Normal face""That is worse" Jiro said "Just eat" Kaminari ate. Todoroki offered tea after dinner. Shinso said "No" Todoroki nodded.
"Accepted" No one made disappointment face. Mostly. Mina turned hers into a cough. Kurose, who was not in the room but whose influence haunted it, would have marked it as partial success. Later, when the common room emptied, Midoriya stood in the hallway outside Ren's door and did not knock. He stood at the edge of the route marker, where the floor tape changed color to indicate Provisional Track medical corridor. Aizawa appeared behind him. Midoriya jumped.
"I was not going in!"
"I know""I wanted to ask but then I realized he might be asleep or tired or not want—""Good" Midoriya stopped. Aizawa looked at the door.
"What did you want to ask?" Midoriya held a notebook to his chest.
"Body map sheets. For me. I made a draft. I wanted to ask if he thought the categories were right. But then I thought that might make him responsible for me again" Aizawa watched him.
"Good catch" Midoriya looked down.
"Yes""What can you do instead?"
"Ask you first. Or Toshinori. Or Recovery Girl. Or make my own draft and only ask Ren if he volunteers for that specific review and it does not cost his map" Aizawa nodded.
"Correct" Midoriya swallowed.
"Sir?"
"What?"
"Can you review it?" Aizawa looked at the notebook. Then at Midoriya.
"Yes" Midoriya's eyes widened. Aizawa held out a hand.
"Now go eat more. You look like guilt with bones" Midoriya handed him the notebook.
"Yes, sir" Inside the room, Ren had heard none of it because the door was open only enough for hallway sound, not individual voices. That was the point. He sat at the desk for the first time. Fourteen degrees had become chair time. Chair time had become desk test. Desk test had become writing one line on a sticky note and then stopping because Recovery Girl said first desk sessions were not memoirs. Ren looked at the blank plaque he had brought inside. His name was not on the door yet.
Hana sat on the bed, folding the winter blanket for the third time. Daichi sat in the soft chair, reading the dorm condition sheet as if it might change when unsupervised. Ren held a pen. The plaque waited. He did not write Ren Akiyama. Not yet. He wrote on a temporary paper instead. REN'S ROOM He stared at it. Too simple. Too much. Hana looked over. Her eyes filled. Daichi saw and closed his condition sheet. Ren breathed.
"Temporary" Hana nodded quickly.
"Temporary" Daichi's voice was rough.
"Good temporary" Ren taped it under the blank plaque, not on it. The door now said: REN'S ROOM Temporary. Enough. Across the hall in a quieter wing, Shinso stood inside his own room and looked at the card from the Akiyamas. He had moved it three times. Desk. Shelf. Desk again. Now it sat unopened beside the cheap alarm clock. He picked it up. Put it down. Picked it up again. The envelope had his name on it. Hitoshi. Not Shinso. Not student. Not project. Hitoshi. He opened it before the name became too much.
The card inside was small. No long message. No pressure. Hana's handwriting said: Broth is available if wanted. No meaning required. Daichi's handwriting below it said: Bentaro respects optional attendance. There was no adoption language. No rescue language. No "we are here for you" in a way that demanded gratitude. Just broth. Optional. And an umbrella with terrible boundaries. Shinso sat on the bed. The room was normal. Suspiciously normal. The card stayed in his hand. He whispered "Yes to broth.
No meaning" The room did not answer. Good. It did not need to. He placed the card on the desk, visible but not centered. Then he took the small temporary board Kurose had delivered and wrote the first condition himself. I CAN LEAVE AND STILL BE ALLOWED BACK He stared at it for a long time. Then placed it on the desk instead of the wall. Not wall yet. Desk was enough. The first night in the dorms did not make U. A. whole. Class 1-A took too long to quiet down. Kaminari forgot which room was his twice.
Iida conducted a hallway check no one had authorized. Bakugo threatened three people over dishwashing. Todoroki made tea at 22: 00 with the seriousness of a ritual and scared Sero by appearing silently near the kettle. Uraraka called her parents and cried only after hanging up. Midoriya rewrote his body-map sheet from memory and then stopped because Aizawa had written at the top rest is part of the map. Ren slept badly in his transitional room and woke three times to map the door. Each time, the door was there.
Closed. Openable from inside. A room with a way out. Shinso slept worse in his normal suspicious room and woke once with the certainty that staying had become a trap. He stood, opened the door, stepped into the hallway, counted two exits, then stepped back inside. No one stopped him. No one asked why. He returned. In the morning, both rooms were still there. Not home. Not holding. Not yet. Maybe not ever in the same way home meant for other people.
But a place did not have to become home in one night to become less enemy. Sometimes the first victory was simpler. The door opened. The door closed. The door opened again. And each time, the room allowed return.
