Chương 107: What Was Put Inside

The first thing they gave him was not a Quirk. It was silence. Not the absence of sound. The room had too many sounds for that. Machines breathed. Monitors chimed. Air moved through hidden vents. Liquid clicked through tubes somewhere out of sight. Shoes crossed the floor and stopped and crossed again. The doctor murmured instructions in a low voice, and assistants answered with numbers instead of words. But none of those sounds belonged to Ren. That was the silence. No Hana asking warm or cold.
No Daichi turning fear into practical nonsense. No Kurose saying his name like it was still larger than the file. No Aizawa making a command sound like a wall he could lean against. No Recovery Girl insulting him back into his body. No Shinso making the room less powerful by hating it properly. No Midoriya breathing through a screen. No Bakugo pretending not to care badly enough that everyone noticed. The room had sound. It had no one.
Ren lay strapped to the examination frame and watched the light above him reflect against metal arms that moved without hurry. His right arm had been repositioned after the first scan. The restraint around that wrist was padded now, which did not make it kind. The doctor had called it "preventive respect for tissue integrity" and Ren had decided he would rather be insulted honestly. His scars had cooled. Not completely.
They lingered under his skin like banked coals, especially along the right shoulder where the warp pull and the failed anchor had fought each other through muscle, tendon, and scar. The incomplete lattice had left thin pale lines under the surface. Not the full pattern. Not the controlled version. A bad echo. The doctor had photographed it. Ren had looked away. That had still given him the data. The speaker in the ceiling had gone quiet again.
All For One, or whatever name belonged to the voice Ren refused to chase, came and went like pressure behind the room. When the voice was absent, the doctor filled the space with observation. When the voice returned, the doctor became more careful. That told Ren something. Not enough. Enough to keep. The doctor stood near a tray that had risen from a side compartment after the room decided honesty was unnecessary. Two sealed containers rested inside a cradle of white polymer. Not syringes in the usual sense.
Not vials exactly. Each held a cloudy thread suspended in clear fluid, coiled like something sleeping badly. Ren stared at them. His stomach understood before the doctor spoke.
"No" The doctor looked up. A small smile.
"You have not asked what they are""No""Efficient refusal""No" The doctor sighed, but not with irritation. With a kind of regret so shallow it did not deserve the name.
"Pain modulation first. Then regenerative scaffolding. Low-dose staged introduction, not full-factor implantation at once. I would prefer more preparation, but the rescue window is unpredictable" Ren's hands tried to close. The restraints stopped them. Pain modulation. Regenerative scaffolding. Words clean enough to be crimes in laboratory coats. The doctor adjusted his gloves.
"Your original Quirk is responding faster than projected. That creates risk, but also opportunity. If I wait too long, your system may seal itself defensively and reject later integration attempts. We must introduce the factors while the scar architecture remains open" Ren turned his head toward him.
"They are not mine" The doctor paused. Something like satisfaction crossed his face.
"Not yet" Ren pulled against the restraints. Not enough to move. Enough to hurt.
"They are not mine" The doctor stepped closer.
"No. At this moment, they are not. That is precisely why your body's response matters" Ren's breath came too fast. He forced it slower because the monitors wanted every panic.
"You think this is science""It is science""It is theft""It is also theft" The honesty made Ren colder than denial would have. The doctor looked down at him with infuriating patience.
"You think categories exclude each other because moral language is cleaner that way. It does not. A thing can be monstrous and still true. Violation and discovery often enter through the same door. I did not build the world that way""You chose the door" The doctor's smile faded. For one second, real irritation showed. Good. Ren held onto that. The speaker crackled.
"Doctor" A warning. The doctor inhaled once and turned back to the tray. Ren looked at the ceiling. No. No. No. The word filled his skull until it stopped being language and became pressure. A panel opened near the side of the frame. A mechanical arm moved with a restraint band wider than his palm, curved and white. It settled over his upper left arm, not tight, just enough to keep the limb in place. The doctor came close with the first container. Ren looked at him.
"You do not get to call this integration" The doctor's hand paused. Ren's voice shook. He hated that. He kept speaking.
"You do not get to call it compatibility. You do not get to call it treatment. You do not get to say my body accepted something you forced into it" The room listened. Machines listened. The doctor listened most of all. Ren said "If it survives, it survived you" For once, the doctor did not immediately answer. Then the speaker voice said softly "Remember that line, Doctor" Ren closed his eyes. The injection did not feel like a needle at first.
It felt like cold pressure beneath the skin, then a spreading wrongness that moved too slowly to be pain and too personally to be numbness. His left arm stiffened. His fingers twitched against the restraint. The first Quirk factor entered like a foreign rhythm trying to teach his nerves a new language before asking if they wanted one. Ren clenched his teeth. No scream. The doctor watched the monitors.
"Initial nociceptive response high. No immediate systemic rejection. Autonomic spike. Original Quirk heat rising" Ren felt it. Scar Tissue waking not at the surface, but inward, as if every scar in his body had turned its head toward the new thing and asked whether it was wound, weapon, infection, or instruction. His left arm went numb from elbow to wrist. Then not numb. Worse. Pain flickered out. For one impossible second, the aching in his right shoulder dimmed. The bruised pull down his ribs quieted.
The restraint pressure faded. The cut on his lip vanished from awareness. His body was still damaged, but the alarm wires had been cut. The absence was horrifying. Ren gasped. The doctor leaned closer.
"Yes. There. Pain suppression onset. Faster than expected" Ren tried to find the pain. It was not gone. It was behind something. A door inside his nerves. Locked from the wrong side. Panic hit harder than pain had. He pulled against the restraints again.
"Turn it off" The doctor's eyes brightened.
"Subjective distress at analgesic onset. Fascinating""Turn it off!" His voice broke. The pain did not return. That was the terror. Pain was awful. Pain was his. This silence inside his own body was not. Ren felt his palms heat. His scars followed. Scar Tissue surged toward the foreign factor, not to use it, not yet, but to wall it off. Heat gathered along his left arm in jagged patches. Pale lines rose near the injection site, thin and branching, trying to isolate the new rhythm from the rest of him.
The doctor's voice sharpened.
"Scar capsule formation beginning already. Remarkable. Reduce stabilizer by three percent. Let it work" Let it work. Ren's breath shook. His body was building around the theft. The doctor was letting it. Not stopping. Not helping. Observing. The numbness faltered. Pain came back all at once. Right shoulder. Left arm. ribs. lip. wrists. spine. The rebound hit like a door kicked open from inside. Ren screamed before he could stop himself. The room answered happily. Monitors spiked. The doctor did not touch him.
"Rebound severe. Integration incomplete. Pain Gate potential present but unstable" Pain Gate. The phrase entered the room like a brand. Ren choked on air.
"No" The doctor turned to the assistant.
"Record that term as provisional only" Ren laughed. Broken. Horrible.
"You name stolen things fast" The doctor looked almost wounded.
"I name patterns""You name wounds while they are still bleeding" That landed harder. The doctor looked away first. Good. Then he reached for the second container. Ren's body went cold.
"No" The word came out hoarse now. Find this and other great novels on the author's preferred platform. Support original creators! Less defiant. More animal. He hated that too. The doctor held the container gently, as if gentleness mattered after the first one.
"Regenerative scaffolding. This one may feel warmer" Ren stared at him.
"I will not consent""I know""Say it" The doctor looked at him. Ren's voice turned low.
"Say you know" Silence. The assistant looked at the doctor, uncertain. The speaker did not intervene. The doctor set the container down for a moment. Then said "I know you do not consent" Ren breathed once. It did not make anything better. It made the truth harder to steal. The doctor picked up the container again. Ren closed his eyes. The second injection burned. Not with fire. With growth.
That was the only word his mind could find, and it was wrong because growth should have belonged to living things that wanted to become larger. This was not growth. This was a scaffold unfolding in tissue that had not asked for architecture. A warm lattice of instructions entered the bloodstream, found injury, found inflammation, found old scar channels still open from the first graft, and tried to offer repair in a language built for bodies that had been designed to be modified. Ren's skin flushed.
His scars heated. His right shoulder pulsed. His left arm went rigid. The doctor's voice came distantly.
"Regenerative factor detected. Local tissue recruitment. Increased metabolic demand. Temperature rising" Ren tasted bile. Not metaphorical. Actual. His stomach twisted. He swallowed hard. The warmth expanded into hunger so sudden and violent it became nausea. His body wanted fuel. Salt. water. sleep. protein. minerals. Anything. Everything. It had been given a construction order and no materials. Scar Tissue reacted. Not outward. Inward.
Old scars across his shoulder and ribs warmed in linked sequence, then the new injection site, then the damaged right arm, then his spine. The warmth did not become healing. It became negotiation. Walls inside walls. Scar around scaffold. Scaffold against scar. Repair trying to happen before consent, before resources, before safety. His body tried to survive the contradiction. The doctor whispered "Beautiful" Ren opened his eyes.
The doctor was watching the monitors with the expression Hana had when Ren was young and the fever finally broke, except emptied of love and filled with possession. Ren's voice came out thin.
"Do not call it that" The doctor looked at him. Ren pulled in a breath that shook around the restraints.
"My body is not beautiful for surviving you" The doctor's face changed. The speaker voice returned, quieter than before.
"No. But it is impressive" Ren turned his head toward the speaker.
"No" The voice paused. Ren's vision blurred at the edges, but he held the word.
"No" This time, nobody answered. The fever rose for twenty minutes. Or five. Or an hour. Time became measurement without mercy. The doctor monitored him through the first crisis. Assistants adjusted fluids. Broad bands around his arms delivered nutrients and stabilizers through ports that did not look like needles but still entered him. Cooling pads slid beneath his back. A mask lowered near his face and offered oxygen.
He turned his head away until Recovery Girl's voice in memory snapped at him for refusing air to spite a room. He accepted the mask. Not for them. For return. That distinction mattered. The Pain Suppressor flickered twice more. Each time, pain vanished in patches and returned wrong. The Regenerative Scaffold tried to recruit tissue around the right shoulder and left injection site. Scar Tissue tried to wall both off, then failed, then tried again. The three processes did not become one. They collided.
Ren drifted near unconsciousness and clawed back because unconsciousness felt too close to surrender. The doctor noticed.
"Sleep would help" Ren's eyes opened.
"Then I refuse help""That is not a sustainable strategy""It only needs to annoy you" The doctor smiled faintly despite himself.
"It does" Good. At U. A., annoyance had become grief with a job. That was Present Mic's description. No one wrote it down officially. Unofficially, it became a room's operating principle. The school had not slept. Not in any meaningful sense. Students were kept away from the search floor, which meant they created their own circles of not-sleep in common rooms, medical bays, guardian housing, and cleared hallways.
Staff moved between them with information measured in pieces small enough to hold and large enough not to lie. Ren was alive. Probable. Ren was conscious at extraction. Confirmed. Ren was injured. Confirmed. Ren was taken by warp method. Confirmed. Destination unknown. Confirmed. Ragdoll's capture likely linked. Confirmed enough. No, there was no ransom. No, there was no public statement naming him. No, Bakugo could not leave campus to hunt anyone. That last answer had required three teachers.
Bakugo stood in the protected common room with his hands sparking so hard the air smelled like burnt sugar and metal. Kirishima stood in front of him, not blocking him exactly, because blocking Bakugo was how people got launched. He stood close enough to be a person instead of an obstacle. Bakugo snarled "Move" Kirishima shook his head.
"No""I said move!"
"Yeah. I heard""Then move!"
"No" Kaminari, from the couch, looked like he wanted to help and also like he wanted to live. Jiro stood beside the wall, jaw tight. Sero had one strip of tape half-extended before remembering every object and restraint rule in the universe and retracting it with visible misery. Bakugo's palms popped.
"He got taken from inside the damn school!" Kirishima's face tightened.
"I know""He was under every stupid rule they had!"
"I know""So what, we sit?" The room went silent. Because that was not just anger. That was the wound. Ren had sat. Midoriya had moved. Bakugo had been held. Now Ren was gone. Every lesson from the last week had become sharp enough to cut. Aizawa spoke from the door.
"Yes" Bakugo spun. Aizawa looked worse than usual. Blood had dried near his temple despite someone clearly trying to clean it. His left shoulder sat too stiff. His eyes were red, not from Quirk use alone. Bakugo's voice dropped.
"Don't" Aizawa stepped into the room.
"Yes. You sit. You stand. You punch approved training equipment when cleared. You do not leave campus and become the second target they actually get to move" Bakugo's lips peeled back.
"I'm not a target" Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"You are exactly a target. You hate the word. Good. Use that hatred to stop acting convenient" Kirishima looked between them. Bakugo's voice shook with fury.
"He told me not to get carried""I know" Aizawa did not ask how. He knew because messages had been reviewed, because everything was reviewed now, because privacy had become another casualty and everyone hated it. Bakugo's hands sparked again.
"I wasn't""No" Aizawa's voice turned quieter.
"He was" The sentence hit the room so hard Kaminari looked down. Bakugo went still. Aizawa did not soften it.
"That is not your guilt. It is the enemy's action. Do not turn it into their next opening" Bakugo's jaw clenched. For a moment, he looked young in a way anger usually hid. Then he turned and punched the fixed training pad mounted on the wall. Once. Hard enough that the whole frame shook. Aizawa did not stop him. The pad was approved. The second punch came weaker. The third did not come. Bakugo stood with his fist pressed into the pad, shoulders shaking. Kirishima stayed close. Not touching. There if allowed.
Bakugo did not say anything else. That was probably why everyone heard him. In medical, Midoriya tried to sit up when he heard. He failed. Not dramatically. His body simply refused the order. Pain cut across his face so sharply Inko's hand flew to the call button before Recovery Girl even entered.
"I said no moving" Recovery Girl snapped Midoriya's eyes were wide.
"Akiyama""I know""I have to—""You have to lie down or I will personally invent a worse injury category for you" His breath shook. Inko held his hand this time, carefully, because the medical team had finally allowed it. Izuku looked at Recovery Girl.
"Is he alive?" Recovery Girl's face changed. It did not soften. It became truer.
"We believe so" His eyes filled.
"That's not enough""No" she said "It is not" He tried to lift his head again. Inko squeezed his hand.
"Izuku" He stopped. Barely. Tears slid into his hairline.
"I left the route for Kota" Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened.
"Yes""Akiyama stayed""Yes""Now he's gone" Inko flinched. Recovery Girl stepped closer.
"You are about to make a false equation" Midoriya closed his eyes.
"It feels true""Feelings lie with confidence" His mouth trembled.
"I should have—""No" Inko said The word came from somewhere deeper than fear. Izuku opened his eyes. His mother leaned over him, crying openly now and still somehow fierce.
"You do not get to make your broken body responsible for another stolen child""But—""No" He swallowed a sob. Recovery Girl nodded once.
"Good mother" Inko did not look away from Izuku.
"I mean it. You can be scared. You can be angry. You can love him. You can want to go. You cannot turn your bed into a courtroom and convict yourself because you are stuck in it" Midoriya cried then. Not quietly enough to hide. Inko stayed. Recovery Girl stayed. The room stayed. At guardian housing, Hana did not cry after the first hour. Daichi worried about that more than the crying. She sat at the small table with both hands around a cup of tea she had not drunk.
Bentaro leaned against the wall beside Daichi's chair, tagged and useless and present. The room they had been given was comfortable enough to be cruel. On the table lay a printed copy of the family-facing Quirk explanation. Origin is not blame. Hana had read that line twelve times after Ren was taken. It had not helped. Not because it was wrong. Because the enemy had taken the body that carried the origin. Daichi stood by the window, though there was nothing to see but the inner wall of the campus building.
Hana spoke without looking up.
"They will call" Daichi turned.
"Who?"
"The people who think this proves he should never have moved" Daichi said nothing. Hana's voice remained calm. Too calm.
"They will say the scan was the door. They will say the map was arrogance. They will say the room was safer" Daichi crossed the room and sat across from her.
"The room was not safe. It was only still" Her hands tightened around the cup.
"He wanted the scan""Yes""He wanted to understand his body""Yes""They took him through that want" Daichi closed his eyes briefly.
"Yes" Hana looked up. Her eyes were dry and terrible.
"I hate them for making me afraid of his wanting" Daichi reached across the table and stopped before touching her cup. She looked at his hand, then nodded. He placed his hand over hers. Light. Stable.
"That is what they are trying to take next" Hana's mouth trembled.
"His wants?"
"Ours too" She breathed in. Out. Then she moved the cup aside and opened the folder Kurose had left them for verified updates.
"Then we keep them" Daichi nodded.
"How?" Hana picked up the soft approved pen. The first line she wrote was not a request. It was an instruction for the room they would demand remain ready. Ren's room stays Ren's room. Daichi read it. Then added below: Bentaro remains on shelf unless Ren objects. Hana stared at him. Daichi said "Practical continuity" She laughed. Once. It broke. Then she cried. Daichi held her hand through it. In the lab, Ren woke from a few minutes of forced sleep with someone touching his right arm.
He jerked against the restraints. Pain answered. Real pain. Good. Bad. His right shoulder burned less sharply, which was horrifying because he had not given it permission to improve. The Regenerative Scaffold had done something. Not healed. Not fixed. Reduced inflammation. Pulled resources. Built temporary support where the extraction had strained tissue. His body had used what they put inside. Ren turned his face away from the doctor. The doctor noticed.
"Ah" Ren said nothing.
"Bodily betrayal is a common feeling after forced intervention" Ren's head snapped back. The doctor looked calm.
"Do you think I do not know that?" Ren's voice came out ragged.
"You do not get to name that either" The doctor paused. Then nodded.
"Fair" The word almost made Ren laugh. Fair. In this room. The doctor checked the monitor.
"The regenerative scaffold reduced acute swelling in the shoulder. Minor stabilization around the right wrist. Your original Quirk is already encasing both factors in scar-mediated boundary tissue. Not integration yet. Containment" Ren stared. Containment. Good. Not good. His body was walling the theft off. For now. The doctor looked delighted.
"You are not rejecting them outright. You are not accepting them either. Your Quirk is making a third answer" Ren closed his eyes. Of course it was. Scar Tissue had always lived in third answers. Not healed. Not uninjured. Scarred. The doctor moved away.
"I will give you water" Ren opened his eyes.
"Why?"
"Because dehydration will damage the data and the boy" The order mattered. Data first. Boy second. Still boy. The doctor had said it. Maybe care was easier for monsters when it served measurement. An assistant lifted Ren's head and held a cup with a wide flexible rim to his mouth. Ren thought about refusing. Then thought of Recovery Girl, who would somehow know and be furious across distance. He drank. For return. Not for them. The water tasted like plastic and metal.
When the cup was taken away, the speaker crackled again. The voice returned.
"You are deciding which parts of survival count as cooperation" Ren looked at the ceiling. The voice continued "A difficult problem. Refuse water and you weaken yourself for pride. Accept it and you fear the room has made you participate" Ren said nothing.
"You have intelligent teachers. I wonder which one taught you that survival is not approval" Ren's jaw tightened. Too close. Again. The voice seemed pleased.
"Ah. More than one" Ren closed his eyes. Do not feed. The voice softened.
"Good. Keep them with you. People survive rooms better when they bring ghosts inside" Ren opened his eyes.
"They are not ghosts""No?" Ren stared at the ceiling.
"No" The voice waited. Ren said "They are routes back" Silence. The doctor looked at him. The speaker made no sound for several seconds. Then All For One said, almost gently "Then I will have to study routes as well" Ren's blood went cold. The doctor checked another monitor.
"Second phase in six hours" Ren turned toward him.
"There is more?" The doctor looked almost surprised by the question.
"Of course" Of course. Ren looked at the ceiling and tried to map the room again. Visible door. Hidden side panel. ceiling speaker. barrier field. restraint frame. two assistants. doctor. unknown voice remote. machines. vents high left. no window. no small objects. no allies. Routes back. He had said it. Now he had to believe it. He pulled against the left wrist restraint slowly. Not to escape. To test. The strap held. The doctor noticed but did not stop him. That meant testing was allowed because it produced data.
Fine. Ren tested anyway. The strap edge rubbed skin. Pain. His pain. Still his. He held onto it. At U. A., Nezu stood before a wall of moving information and did not blink for almost a full minute. Beside him, Hakamata updated search grids. Police reports. Hero patrol routes. Warp signatures. known League hideouts. black market clinics. abandoned medical facilities. suspected Garaki-associated shell properties. Every path produced too many branches. Every branch split again.
Ragdoll's absence hung over the map like a missing sense. Search should have made this easier. Search was gone. Taken first. Of course. Nezu folded his paws behind his back.
"Doctor Garaki" Hakamata looked up.
"You are certain?"
"No" Nezu's eyes remained on the map.
"I am past needing certainty to prioritize probability" Aizawa stood near the wall, bandaged and silent. Kurose sat at the table with Ren's route documents spread before her, every page marked, every false notification log open, every corrected procedure now a wound in paper form. All Might stood in the doorway, not entering fully, because if he entered he would start moving and there was not yet a destination.
Nezu continued "The method, the interest in physiology, the coordination with warp extraction, the linked capture of Ragdoll, the attempt to induce movement rather than simply attack. This is not only the League" Aizawa's voice was rough.
"Then we find the doctor" Hakamata said "We have no confirmed location" All Might's fist tightened. Kurose looked up.
"Then we find what he needs" Everyone turned toward her. She did not look triumphant. She looked angry enough to become precise.
"He took Ren during a baseline scan because he needs biological data. He took Ragdoll because Search changes pursuit. He failed to take Bakugo but still values public pressure. He is not improvising from a warehouse with a chair and a flashlight. He needs equipment. power. sterile supply. assistants. samples. storage. disposal. communications he can hide" Nezu's eyes brightened.
"Excellent" Aizawa said "Garaki's labs" Kurose nodded.
"Not one. Labs. Clinics. shells. storage sites. Anything with medical infrastructure and enough isolation to hold a conscious adaptive Quirk subject" All Might's voice lowered.
"Nomu facilities" Silence. The word entered the room like a corpse. Nezu turned to Hakamata.
"Begin with suspected medical shell companies tied to pediatric Quirk diagnostics, long-term care facilities, and abandoned research leases. Cross-reference power consumption anomalies, waste disposal, and structures with basement renovations" Hakamata was already typing. Aizawa moved toward the door. Nezu said "Where are you going?"
"To get Ectoplasm and Power Loader. If we are hunting labs, I want people who know how buildings lie" Kurose stood.
"I'm coming" Aizawa looked at her.
"You have not slept""Neither have you""You are compromised""So are you" For a moment, they stared at each other. Then Nezu said "Good. Go be compromised usefully" Aizawa and Kurose left. All Might remained. Nezu looked at him.
"You are waiting for permission to move" All Might's smile was strained and terrible.
"I am learning restraint""Painful?"
"Yes""Good" All Might looked at him. Nezu's expression softened by the smallest amount.
"Trustworthy, then" In the lab, Ren learned the second thing they gave him. Not another Quirk. A mirror. Not glass. A screen lowered in front of him after the restraints tilted the frame upright. His body protested the movement with fevered shivers. The screen activated, showing him from the shoulders up. Pale. Sweaty. Hair damp against his forehead. Right arm strapped and slightly swollen. Left injection site reddened.
Thin pale lines under the skin around both arms, not full lattice, not normal scars, something new trying to decide whether it belonged. Ren stared at himself. The doctor stood beside the screen.
"I thought you should see" Ren's voice was flat.
"You thought wrong""Perhaps. But your subjective response matters""I am not answering""You already are" Ren hated that. The doctor pointed without touching the screen.
"Pain Suppressor factor. Here. Scar boundary forming around the injection path. Regenerative Scaffold. Here. Stronger vascular response. Your original Quirk is refusing diffusion into the central system without killing the factors. Extraordinary" Ren looked at the pale lines. Not mine. Not mine. Not mine. The lines did not care. They were in him. No. In was not same as mine. He held onto that distinction until it hurt more than the restraints.
The doctor said "Your body is trying to make them survivable" Ren whispered "My body does that""Yes""That does not make them mine" The doctor lowered his hand.
"No" The answer was quiet. The screen reflected both of them. Boy restrained. Doctor watching. Something new under skin. The doctor said "But if your body succeeds, the distinction will become complicated" Ren closed his eyes. That was the cruelty. Not the injection. Not only. The future. What if the theft stayed useful? What if survival built a bridge over violation before his mind could burn it down? What if his body chose integration because the alternative was death?
What if he lived because of what they put inside? The room wanted that question most. Ren opened his eyes.
"They started as what you did" The doctor watched him. Ren's voice shook. He kept it anyway.
"If they become anything else, it will not be because you were right" The doctor's expression went still. Ren looked at himself on the screen. Pale lines. Scar boundaries. Foreign factors. His face. His body. Not theirs.
"Turn it off" The doctor hesitated. Then turned off the screen. That was not mercy either. But it was obedience to one small no. Ren stored it. Small no. Not enough. Still his. Night, or what the lab called night, came without darkness. The lights dimmed only slightly. The machines did not sleep. The doctor left. Assistants changed. The speaker stayed quiet. Ren remained restrained, though the chest strap loosened again and his left wrist was adjusted after the skin reddened.
They did not want to break him carelessly. That was the worst promise the room made. He drifted. Woke. Drifted again. Pain flickered in and out as the Pain Suppressor factor misfired in small patches. Once, his right shoulder vanished from sensation for three breaths and came back with a wave so sharp he bit his lip open again.
Once, the Regenerative Scaffold triggered a fever spike and his body demanded food with a violence that made him retch bile against the side of his mouth until an assistant turned his head and cleaned him with clinical efficiency. He hated them for that. He needed the air. Routes back, he reminded himself. Water was route back. Breathing was route back. Pain was route back. Anger was route back. No was route back. Here was route back. Near the edge of another forced sleep, he heard Hana's voice in memory.
You come back to this room. Not the lab. R-2. Bentaro. The shelf. The wall panel. The ugly orange cat. Shinso hating the room properly. Midoriya being bad at not apologizing. Bakugo calling the machine weak. Aizawa saying he did everything right. Kurose saying his name as the fog took him. Recovery Girl keeping the room ready. Daichi saying the wrong thing was someone trying to steal the choice inside it. Ren opened his eyes in the laboratory light. His palms were hot. His scars were hotter.
The foreign factors stirred beneath boundary tissue, not integrated, not rejected, not silent. He could feel them now. Pain door. Repair scaffold. Two wrong things inside him, both trying to become survivable. He looked at the ceiling. The room wanted answers. Ren had one. Not consent. Not acceptance. Not surrender. A line. They are in me. He breathed. Then, through the fever, finished it. They are not mine. For now, that was the wall.
