Chương 111: Breach Is Not Rescue

The floor answered in layers. First vibration. Then sound. Then dust loosening from somewhere above the light fixtures. Ren felt it through the transport frame before his ears understood it. The laboratory shook once, not with the careless violence of an explosion, but with the controlled weight of something enormous telling the building that it no longer owned its own walls. A route becoming sound. Here. The word had left his mouth before the impact. Now the floor said it back.
The assistant holding the injector froze for half a second. Half a second was not freedom. It was enough to remember that rooms could be interrupted. Garaki turned toward the door, face no longer blank, no longer delighted, no longer arranged into clinical patience. Calculation had stripped him down to the thing beneath the doctor. Not panic. Not yet. Something colder and faster. The overhead speaker crackled.
"Sedate him and move" All For One's voice had lost its amusement. That frightened Ren more than the laughter had. Garaki looked at the transport frame, the monitors, the lines still reading Ren's fever and graft instability, the pale boundary marks crawling under his skin like maps that had not decided whether to be scars or doors.
"Full sedation risks destabilizing the bridge""Then partial""Spatial transfer in this state risks systemic collapse" The speaker was silent for one terrible second. Then the voice said "Data survives collapse better than prisoners survive rescue" Garaki's face tightened. Ren heard it. Not the words only. The order underneath. Data first. Subject survival second. Boy third. Even Garaki disliked the order when it threatened the work. That was useful. Ugly. Useful. The assistant raised the injector again.
Ren pulled against the left wrist restraint. The strap cut into skin already raw from the first mark. Pain answered bright and clean. Pain Suppressor moved toward it, trying to lower the volume. No. Not there. Not now. He clenched his fingers until the pain stayed sharp enough to locate his hand. Scar Tissue warmed around the wrist, angry at the new damage. Regenerative Scaffold stirred uselessly, wanting fuel and repair and permission it had not earned. Borrowed function under protest. Not integration.
Not acceptance. A narrow route. Ren slammed his left fingers down against the transport frame arm as far as the restraint allowed. One. Two. Three. The assistant grabbed his wrist. Ren dragged his finger under the marks anyway. The skin tore. Small. Enough. Here. Garaki saw. His face changed. Really changed. Not because of the blood. Not because of the mark. Because the room was losing cleanliness faster than it could move him. The injector came down. The second impact hit the facility. Closer. Lights flickered.
One monitor went black and rebooted into a warning screen. Somewhere beyond the room, metal screamed, then stopped screaming because something stronger held it in place. Garaki shouted "Hold him!" The assistant pressed the injector against Ren's left port. Ren twisted. Not away. Toward pain. His right shoulder should not have moved. It did. Pain Suppressor lowered the shock before it could swallow the command. Regenerative Scaffold braced the strained joint just enough to keep it from tearing further.
Scar Tissue heated across old injury lines and the new graft boundaries, not smooth, not obedient, not clean, but aligned for one breath around a single purpose. Delay. The injector slipped. The dose entered wrong. Not none. Not full. Cold spread into Ren's left arm and up toward his chest, but unevenly. His vision blurred at the edges. The room tilted. He stayed awake. Garaki's eyes snapped to the monitor.
"Partial dose. Incomplete sedation" Ren smiled with blood on his lip.
"Fake paperwork lost" Garaki stared at him. The speaker said "Doctor" Garaki moved. Everything moved. Panels opened. Assistants detached lines. A wall section folded back, revealing a corridor that had not existed a minute earlier. The transport frame unlocked from the floor and rose on silent supports. Another tremor rolled through the facility, closer still. Alarms began shouting in layered tones. Ren tried to keep count. Two assistants visible. Garaki. Hidden corridor. Transport frame. Injector incomplete.
Door to main room. Possible warp. Fever. Pain. Here. The transport frame turned toward the hidden corridor. Then stopped. Not because Ren stopped it. Because the room lost power for half a second. Half a second. Again. The lights died and returned red. In the dark, before the emergency backup fully caught, Ren heard something impossible. A voice through concrete. Not words at first. Sound. Controlled. Massive. All Might. The frame lurched. Garaki said "Move manually" The assistant grabbed the transport handles.
The wall behind them cracked. Not exploded. Cracked inward in a precise vertical line, as if the building had been cut along a decision. Cement dust burst into the room. The assistant turned. A strip of binding cloth flashed through the new seam before the wall fully opened. Garaki's head snapped back. Aizawa's voice came from beyond the broken wall, rough and cold.
"Eyes on the room" The black mist that had begun to curl from the hidden corridor recoiled so violently it thinned into ragged smoke. Erasure. Ren almost broke at the sight of it. Not relief. Relief was too weak. Recognition. The route had a face. The wall gave way under controlled force. All Might did not smash through like an explosion. He entered like a held earthquake. Cementoss shaped the break around him. Power Loader's braces locked the edges.
Ectoplasm clones poured into the room ahead and to the sides, checking angles, panels, floor seams. Present Mic's voice sounded from somewhere behind, not shouting, but carrying through comms in a focused line.
"Two assistants. one doctor. one subject frame. hidden corridor right. mist activity suppressed" Subject frame. Not boy. The correction came immediately. Kurose's voice through another comm, sharp enough to cut wire.
"Student frame" Present Mic answered "Student frame" Ren's throat closed. Student. Not subject. Garaki moved faster than his shape suggested possible. This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work. One assistant vanished through the hidden corridor. The other triggered a purge panel and lunged for the monitors. Aizawa's scarf caught the assistant's wrist and slammed it into the wall before the hand reached the control. Ectoplasm clones swarmed the console.
Power Loader shouted for data containment. Cementoss sealed the floor drains as white purge foam began to hiss upward from one grate and then stopped, trapped under concrete before it could spread. All Might's eyes found Ren. For one second, the Symbol disappeared. Not physically. His face broke around the boy on the frame. Then Recovery Girl's voice cracked through the room.
"Do not you dare freeze!" All Might moved. Garaki saw him move and understood immediately that he could not win the room. He also understood what he could still take. He grabbed one sealed data cartridge from the console, then another from the inner drawer that opened under his palm. Aizawa shifted his gaze toward him and the black mist near the corridor crawled back another inch, but Garaki himself had no visible Quirk to erase in that second, only old hands and a choice. All Might crossed the distance.
The floor dented beneath him. Garaki lifted one hand. Not to fight. To drop something. A small capsule hit the floor. Aizawa shouted "Mask!" Present Mic's voice boomed from the hall, not at full power, but enough to blast the spreading vapor sideways before it reached the transport frame. Cementoss raised a slab between the gas and Ren. All Might changed direction mid-step, not toward Garaki, toward Ren. That was the choice. Garaki reached the hidden corridor.
The black mist was almost gone under Aizawa's stare, but not fully. It clung to the far edge where line of sight broke around a bend. Aizawa lunged. His scarf caught Garaki's coat. For one fierce second, the doctor was pulled backward. Garaki twisted out of the coat with practiced ugliness, leaving white fabric wrapped in capture cloth. Aizawa snarled. The old doctor disappeared through the seam with one data cartridge pressed to his chest. The mist folded after him.
Aizawa's gaze hit it too late to close the last inch. The hidden corridor sealed itself halfway before Power Loader jammed a tool into the mechanism and stopped it from locking completely. Garaki was gone. Ren was not. That became the room's only fact. All Might reached the transport frame and stopped before touching him. Stopped. Hands open. Visible. Shaking. Ren's vision blurred around him. The partial sedative pulled at the edges of thought. Fever pushed from underneath. Pain came and went in pieces.
His right shoulder was too quiet. His left wrist was too loud. The graft sites burned. All Might's voice was barely a voice.
"You are here" Ren tried to answer. His mouth moved. No sound. Recovery Girl shoved past an Ectoplasm clone with Kurose at her side and two medical staff behind. Aizawa held his position near the hidden corridor, eyes still locked on any trace of black fog, blood running fresh from his reopened temple wound. Present Mic's voice continued mapping from the hall. Power Loader swore at the jammed door. Cementoss sealed the purge vents. Every adult had a job. Good. Rage had jobs.
Recovery Girl climbed onto the lower step beside the transport frame and looked at Ren's face. Not the machines first. Him.
"Eyes on me" Ren found her. The room tilted less. Recovery Girl's mouth tightened.
"Good. No heroic twitching" His breath hitched. A laugh tried to happen and failed. Kurose stepped into his line of sight from the left, hands visible, face controlled and devastated.
"Ren" The monitor spiked. Scar heat flashed across his forearm. Recovery Girl snapped "Careful" Kurose stopped immediately. Not away. Still there. Ren forced his eyes to her. Her voice lowered.
"You are here. We are here. Medical first. No questions" His throat worked. No sound. He tried again.
"Here" The word came out like scraped metal. Kurose's eyes filled. She did not cry. Not yet.
"Here" she said Recovery Girl cut the nearest restraint with a medical release tool, then stopped before freeing the next one.
"Do not move him until I say. He has graft fever, partial sedation, shoulder strain, active boundary lines, and if anyone yanks one limb I will end their career with educational value" All Might took one step back immediately. Aizawa said from the corridor "Understood" Power Loader said "Very understood" Present Mic said "Aggressively understood" Recovery Girl looked at Ren's arms. Her face changed when she saw the lines. Not surprise. Fury given anatomy. She touched nothing at first.
"Tell me what hurts" Ren breathed. Pain Suppressor flickered. For one second, nothing hurt clearly enough to name. Panic rose. Recovery Girl saw it.
"Not what the graft says. What you know" Ren's eyes burned. What he knew. Right shoulder wrong. Left wrist cut. Chest tight. Fever. Mouth. Graft sites. He forced pieces out.
"Right shoulder. left wrist. fever. mouth. ports. pain goes missing" Recovery Girl's face hardened.
"Trustworthy" The word almost broke him. Garaki had monitors. Recovery Girl had vocabulary. That mattered. Kurose closed her eyes for half a second. All Might turned away just enough that Ren would not see his face collapse. Aizawa's voice came from the corridor.
"Grafts?" Recovery Girl did not look away from Ren.
"Yes" The room stilled around the word. Ren's breath caught. Kurose leaned forward, careful, precise.
"Ren. Listen to me. You do not have to explain them" He looked at her. She repeated "You do not have to explain them" His mouth trembled.
"They put things in me" The sentence entered the room and stripped every adult bare. All Might's hands closed. Aizawa's scarf trembled. Recovery Girl's voice, when it came, was low enough to frighten everyone who knew her.
"I know" Ren shook his head once. Small. Violent.
"They are not mine" Recovery Girl's hand hovered near his forehead. Stopped. Asked without words. Ren looked at her hand. Then nodded. She touched his forehead with the back of her fingers. Warm. Human. Not diagnostic first.
"They are in you" she said His eyes sharpened with old terror. Kurose's face changed because she knew the line before it came. Ren whispered "So was the needle" Recovery Girl's mouth tightened.
"Yes" No correction. No comfort too soon. Just yes. Then she said "And you are still Ren Akiyama before, during, and after every foreign factor in this room" His breath broke. Not crying. Not yet. Something lower. Kurose said "Medical first. Identity never left" Aizawa turned his head slightly. Still watching the corridor. Still holding Erasure. His voice was rough.
"You did everything right" Ren's eyes squeezed shut. The monitor spiked. Recovery Girl snapped "Aizawa, if you make my patient emotionally combust before transport, I will sedate you instead" Aizawa's mouth tightened.
"Understood" Ren made a broken sound that might have been a laugh. Good. Awful. Good. The facility shook again. Present Mic's voice cut through.
"Movement below. multiple contacts leaving through lower east tunnel. No heavy breathing signatures in this room besides ours and Ren's. Gas contained. purge sealed. We need exit before secondary systems wake up" Nezu's voice through comms, calm and terrible.
"Priority is student extraction. Evidence team secondary. Do not pursue Garaki beyond line of support" All Might's jaw clenched. Aizawa said "Copy" The word cost him. Ren heard it. Good. No one else gone because of him. Recovery Girl worked fast. She did not remove every restraint at once. She replaced them. That mattered and hurt. Lab restraints became medical supports. Captivity became stabilization one strap at a time, each change announced before it happened.
"Chest strap coming off. Medical brace replacing it""Left wrist support. It will touch the cut""Right shoulder stays supported. Do not help me""Port line remains until we control fever. I hate it too" Ren listened. Each sentence put a wall between this room and Garaki's room. Not enough. Enough to breathe. Kurose stayed where he could see her. No questions. No file. No demand. Only witness.
All Might lifted the transport stretcher when Recovery Girl finally allowed movement, but he did it under her direction, not as rescue made forceful.
"Slow" she said All Might moved slow.
"Lower on the right" He lowered.
"Stop" He stopped.
"Again" He obeyed. Ren watched the Symbol of Peace take orders about centimeters and thought distantly that Bakugo would either respect this or combust from secondhand frustration. The thought surprised a weak smile out of him. Kurose saw.
"What?" Ren's voice barely worked.
"Bakugo would hate this" Aizawa said from the corridor "He will be informed selectively" Kurose looked like the laugh hurt her throat. Recovery Girl muttered "Good. Cognition annoying but present" Present Mic's voice from the hall broke.
"Say that again?" Recovery Girl glared toward the comm though he could not see her.
"No" The exit route was not clean. Breach rarely was. The hallway outside the lab had been reshaped by Cementoss into a controlled channel. Foam hissed behind sealed vents. One Ectoplasm clone carried a case of recovered drives. Another marked the hidden corridor with tracking residue and did not follow beyond the support line. Power Loader moved backward, sealing mechanisms as he went.
Aizawa walked near the stretcher with his gaze flicking from shadows to panels to the edges where black mist might try to remember itself. All Might carried the forward weight. Two medical staff guided the rear. Recovery Girl walked beside Ren's head. Kurose walked on his left. Ren tried to keep his eyes open. The sedative argued. Pain argued. Fever argued. The corridor blurred. Then sound struck from behind the walls. A low warp-thrum. Aizawa snapped his head left.
The black fog began to form through a maintenance seam ahead of them, thin and desperate, not enough for a full gate, enough for a hand, enough for a blade, enough for one last theft if everyone flinched. Aizawa's hair lifted. The fog thinned. His eyes were already red. He did not blink.
"All Might""I have it" All Might shifted one hand from the stretcher just enough to brace the wall beside the seam without jarring Ren. The pressure of his palm cracked concrete inward and sealed the seam against the fog's edge. Cementoss reinforced it from behind. Present Mic released a focused pulse down the adjacent passage, disrupting whatever sound or pressure helped the gate hold shape. The fog vanished. Aizawa swayed. Kurose saw.
"Aizawa""I'm fine" Recovery Girl said "Lie in my presence again and become a lesson" Aizawa kept walking.
"Later" Ren stared at him through fever.
"Blink" Aizawa looked down. Ren whispered "Not worth eye damage" For one impossible second, Aizawa looked angry enough to live another week on that alone.
"Do not manage my Quirk during your rescue" Ren's mouth twitched.
"Bad habit" Aizawa blinked once. Fast. Then opened his eyes again. Good. Small. Real. They reached the breach exit. Outside, the evening air hit Ren's face. Cold. Dirty. Real. Not filtered through lab vents. His body did not know what to do with it. He inhaled and almost sobbed because the air belonged to no machine. The old trauma rehabilitation center rose behind them, partially sealed by Cementoss, surrounded by police lines far enough back not to trigger chaos near the medical route. Pro heroes held perimeter.
No students. No cameras. No crowds. Above, the sky existed. Ren stared at it. Had it only been days? Had it been years? The stretcher lowered into the medical transport. Recovery Girl entered with him. Kurose too, after a brief argument that Recovery Girl won by pretending it had been her idea. All Might stayed outside for one second, huge and shaking, then stepped back because the transport needed space more than it needed the Symbol inside it. Ren turned his head toward him.
"All Might" The hero froze. Recovery Girl snapped "Short" Ren swallowed.
"Do not apologize first" All Might's face broke. Then held. He nodded once.
"I will search the rest" That was not sorry. Good. Ren closed his eyes. The transport doors closed. Inside, the world narrowed to medical light, Recovery Girl's hands, Kurose's voice, and the rhythm of machines that were at least on his side now. Not safe. Safer. Different. Kurose sat where he could see her.
"You left marks" Ren opened his eyes halfway.
"Did they work?"
"Yes" He breathed. The word did something in his chest nothing medical could measure. Kurose continued "Hana knew" His eyes burned.
"Daichi?"
"Him too" Ren looked toward the ceiling. Not lab ceiling. Transport ceiling. Still ceiling.
"He remembered" Kurose nodded.
"He remembered" Ren's mouth trembled. The sedative pulled harder. Recovery Girl checked his temperature and swore under her breath.
"Stay with me for one more minute" Ren tried. His body had other plans. Pain Suppressor flickered. Regenerative Scaffold pulsed under his shoulder. Scar Tissue held boundaries around both, frightened and exhausted and stubborn. Borrowed function under protest. He whispered it. Kurose leaned closer.
"What?"
"Borrowed. Not mine" Recovery Girl's hand stilled. Kurose's face went very pale. Ren forced the next words out because they mattered and because if he slept before saying them, the lab might keep them.
"Pain door. Repair scaffold. Containment. Trigger quality. Garaki. Archive node four. Shock. Lower archive. Remote index. Fake voices. R-2 staged wrong. Kurose voice fake. They used routes. They used you" His breathing hitched. Recovery Girl said "Stop" Ren shook his head weakly.
"Need to discharge" Kurose's voice was steady only because she made it so.
"We are receiving. Then stop" Ren swallowed.
"Old diagnostics storage. second lab. trauma rehab. not full integration. bridge under threat. They wanted operational function before identity" Recovery Girl's eyes flashed. Kurose looked like every word was cutting her and she held the wound open anyway so he could empty his hands.
"Received" Ren stared at her.
"Not debrief" Kurose's voice broke for the first time.
"No. Voluntary discharge""Good" Recovery Girl touched his forehead again.
"Now you stop giving the world useful things and be a patient" His eyes closed.
"Bad at that""Yes. Catastrophically" Kurose said "R-2 is ready" Ren's eyes opened a fraction. She smiled through tears now.
"Mina made a sign. It is terrible" His lips moved.
"What says?" Kurose wiped her face quickly with one hand.
"Fake paperwork lost" Ren stared at her. Then a sound escaped him. Tiny. Broken. A laugh. Recovery Girl's face twisted with rage and relief at the same time.
"Terrible sign" Ren whispered "Trustworthy" Then he finally let the transport ceiling fade. At U. A., the protected medical wing prepared for a returning patient and a returning wound. Hana stood outside the receiving room because Recovery Girl had ordered her not to rush the door and because Daichi held her with both arms when the transport siren entered the secure bay. Bentaro leaned against his leg, tagged, ridiculous, present. The doors opened. Recovery Girl came out first. Hana's face went white.
Recovery Girl raised one hand before the question could become a scream.
"Alive" Hana folded. Daichi caught her. Not because she collapsed completely. Because alive was too large for standing. Recovery Girl continued, voice rough.
"Fever. graft instability. right shoulder strain. left wrist injury. partial sedation. conscious during recovery. He spoke. He left marks. He is alive" Daichi's eyes filled.
"Can we see him?"
"After stabilization" Hana clutched Daichi's arm.
"Did he know?" Recovery Girl looked at her.
"That you knew the mark?" Hana nodded. Recovery Girl's expression softened by a degree.
"Yes" Hana covered her mouth. Daichi closed his eyes. Recovery Girl looked between them.
"He also said they put things in him" The words landed. Hana did not cry immediately. Daichi did not move. Recovery Girl continued because false mercy would be cruelty.
"Likely two grafted Quirk factors. Pain modulation and regenerative scaffolding. Not fully integrated. His original Quirk is containing them. He is aware. He rejects ownership. Do not argue that with him" Hana's eyes sharpened through horror.
"Never" Daichi said "In him is not his" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Exactly" Kurose emerged behind the medical team, pale, holding a sealed note tablet with Ren's voluntary discharge. Her hands shook now that he was not looking. Hana saw. She let go of Daichi with one hand and reached for Kurose. Kurose looked startled. Then Hana pulled her in. Not politely. Not carefully. A mother grabbing the adult who had brought words back from the place her son had been. Kurose stood rigid for one second. Then her face crumpled.
"I had him. In the scan room. I had his wrist" Hana held her harder.
"You also brought him back words" Kurose shook. Daichi placed one hand on Kurose's shoulder.
"Both are true" Kurose cried then. Quietly. Fiercely. Recovery Girl looked away and pretended to check a chart because she was merciful in stupid ways. Aizawa came in last from the secure bay, one arm bandaged, temple rewrapped, eyes awful. Hana released Kurose and looked at him. Aizawa stopped.
"He is alive" he said Hana nodded.
"He told All Might not to apologize first?" Aizawa blinked. Kurose made a strangled sound that might have been a laugh. Recovery Girl said "Unfortunately" Hana's face broke around a smile.
"That is my son" In R-2, the shelf waited. Bentaro's portrait. Family photo. Tea labels. The wall panel. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE And beneath it, taped with medical-safe adhesive large enough to offend every design principle in the building, Mina's terrible sign waited in bright block letters. FAKE PAPERWORK LOST Shinso had added smaller text below it, also large enough to satisfy safety review. ROOM STILL ON PROBATION Bakugo had written nothing because no one trusted him with the marker near walls.
Instead, he had sent one approved message to be placed beside the sign. Machine lost. It was not tender. It was perfect. Ren did not see any of it that night. He was in medical isolation, fevered and monitored, Recovery Girl at war with every number on the chart, Dr.
Seno already called in, Nezu receiving the voluntary discharge, All Might searching the collapsed lab for anything left behind, Aizawa refusing sleep until Recovery Girl threatened him in five languages, Kurose rewriting every word subject into student wherever it dared appear, Hana and Daichi waiting outside the stabilization window with hands locked together. Ren did not see the room. But the room was ready. Not because it could protect him from what had happened.
Because someone had kept it from becoming past tense. In the dark hours before morning, while machines measured fever and graft instability and the strange pale boundaries under Ren's skin, Recovery Girl sat beside him and watched his hands. Open. Cooler than before. Not safe. Not clean. Alive. Ren stirred once. His lips moved. She leaned close.
"Here" Recovery Girl swallowed. Then answered the only way that mattered.
"Here" The room did not get the last word.
