The next board had only three lines. PRIVATE TRUTHOPERATIONAL TRUTHPUBLIC SUMMARY Class 1-A disliked it immediately. This was no longer surprising. Aizawa stood beside the board and waited while the room processed the shape of another problem they had not known was waiting behind the last one. Kaminari stared at the words.
"I miss when boards had normal subjects like math" Jiro looked at him.
"You do not miss math""I miss the idea that math stayed on paper and did not ask me about consent" Sero leaned back in his chair.
"Math has word problems" Kaminari paled.
"Never mind. All boards are villains" Todoroki looked at the three lines.
"Private truth sounds dangerous" Bakugo crossed his arms.
"It sounds obvious" Yaoyorozu's eyes narrowed in thought.
"Operational truth may be what people need to know in order to act safely" Kurose, standing by the window, nodded.
"Correct" Midoriya's notebook was closed. His hand rested on top of it. That had become its own small training exercise. Uraraka sat forward.
"So public summary is what you can say without explaining everything?"
"Yes" Kurose said "And what you must be able to say when full explanation is unsafe, inappropriate, private, or unavailable" Ren sat on screen from his room, camera on. The temporary paper beneath his blank door plaque still said REN'S ROOM. The board behind his desk had gained two new lines after yesterday. STOP IS PROTECTIVE ACTION SCORES CAN BE TAUGHT TO SEE BETTER He looked at the common room board. Private truth. Operational truth. Public summary. His left wrist patch stayed quiet. That was good.
That was suspicious. Shinso sat near the edge table with his prototype collar inactive, arms crossed, eyes half-lidded in the way that meant he was awake enough to be irritated by everyone. Aizawa tapped the first line.
"Private truth is what belongs to you. Medical details. trauma details. family details. fragments. fear. exact limits beyond what mission safety requires. You do not owe private truth to classmates, evaluators, civilians, media, or other schools" The room changed at fragments. Not visibly enough to expose them. Enough. Midoriya's fingers tightened on the notebook. Todoroki looked down. Bakugo's eyes shifted toward Ren's screen and then away. Aizawa tapped the second line.
"Operational truth is what people need to act safely with you. Stop commands. route limitations. role summaries. consent conditions. hazard warnings. what not to do around your Quirk during a scenario" He tapped the third.
"Public summary is operational truth compressed for people who do not know you and do not need your history" Kaminari raised a hand.
"So like an elevator pitch but for not making someone worse?" Kurose looked at him.
"That is ugly but close" Kaminari looked proud. Jiro said "Do not become too proud""Private pride later" Aizawa wrote a fourth line. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO MAKE YOUR WOUND LEGIBLE The room went silent. Kurose added beneath it. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO MAKE YOUR RESPONSE LEGIBLE Ren stared at the screen. The first sentence hurt. The second one gave the hurt a rail. He breathed.
"Map" Recovery Girl's voice came from his side speaker.
"You first""Ren's room. desk. screen. private truth board. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. pressure. no gate. map present""Good" Aizawa waited. Then said "Today we practice with people who do not know the full context" Kaminari's eyes widened.
"People?" Aizawa said "Yes" Mina sat up.
"Actual people?"
"Class 1-B" Bakugo's expression darkened instantly.
"No" Aizawa looked at him.
"That was not a vote" From the hallway, a familiar voice rang out with theatrical delight.
"Ah, so the mighty Class 1-A trembles before the concept of outside witnesses!" Kendo's voice followed.
"Monoma" The door opened. Class 1-B entered under Vlad King's supervision, though not the whole class. A smaller group had been selected for controlled interaction: Kendo, Monoma, Tetsutetsu, Tokage, Shiozaki, and Awase. Monoma stepped in first because fate liked making points with terrible timing. He spread one hand toward the room.
"How touching. The celebrated class of scandals, survivals, and symbolic retirements now requires an audience to learn how to summarize itself" Kendo chopped him on the back of the head. Monoma folded at once.
"A cruel censorship of truth!" Kendo bowed slightly toward Aizawa and Kurose.
"Sorry" Aizawa said "Expected" Vlad King sighed.
"That is worse than forgiveness" Shinso looked at Monoma from the edge table.
"Is he always like that?" Kendo said "Yes" Monoma recovered enough to point.
"And you must be the rumored Provisional Track addition" Shinso's expression flattened. Kendo's hand lifted again. Kurose said "Let him correct or fail" Kendo stopped. Monoma blinked.
"Ah" The room waited. Monoma's expression shifted through performance, calculation, embarrassment, and pride trying to survive contact with accountability. He lowered his hand.
"Correction. I am making you into rumor because that is easier than admitting I walked in curious" Shinso stared. Then said "Terrible delivery. Useful content" Ren's voice came from the screen.
"Communal phrase" Monoma turned toward the screen.
"And Akiyama. The second special case" The room went cold. Kendo moved. This time Kurose did not stop her. The chop landed. Monoma went down to one knee.
"Deserved" he wheezed Kendo looked at Ren's screen.
"Sorry" Ren looked at Monoma. Then Kendo.
"Correction?" Monoma, still kneeling, lifted one finger.
"Give me a moment. Accountability has mass" Bakugo muttered "Hit him harder next time" Kirishima whispered "That is not supportive""It would support improvement" Monoma stood slowly, dignity damaged but functional. He faced the screen.
"Correction. I referred to you as a special case. That makes your situation more important than your person and lets me sound clever instead of respectful" Ren breathed.
"Accepted" Monoma blinked.
"That was fast""First acceptance. not full trust""Ah" Kendo nodded.
"Fair" Aizawa looked at both classes.
"Good. That was unplanned and useful" Monoma looked horrified.
"I became curriculum?" Kaminari whispered "Welcome" Jiro whispered "Do not welcome him" Vlad King folded his arms.
"Class 1-B is here because the exam will not be made of people who know your context. Other schools may know rumors. Evaluators may know official summaries. Civilians know nothing. You need operational language that survives curiosity, misunderstanding, and bad first impressions" Tokage grinned.
"That sounds fun" Kendo gave her a look. Tokage lifted both hands.
"Educationally fun" Shiozaki looked toward the board.
"Truth should not be scattered carelessly" Kurose said "Correct" Tetsutetsu looked at Ren's screen and Shinso.
"So we help by not knowing everything?" Aizawa said "Yes" Tetsutetsu nodded hard.
"Got it" Monoma murmured "A rare tactical use of ignorance" Kendo said "Monoma""I am correcting internally" The first exercise was not a scenario. It was language. Aizawa wrote: INTRODUCE ROLESTATE LIMITSTATE WHAT OTHERS SHOULD DOSTATE WHAT OTHERS SHOULD NOT ASK Then he looked at Shinso.
"Public summary. Thirty seconds" Shinso's jaw tightened. He stood. Not because he had to. Because sitting suddenly made the room too much like a panel.
"My name is Hitoshi Shinso. Candidate hero name Responder. My Quirk is voice-based. I use verbal grounding first. During training or rescue, do not answer me as a joke, do not imitate my voice, and do not ask me to use my Quirk because it seems faster. If I say no power, follow verbal instruction unless staff overrides" If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. The room listened. No one laughed. Good. Aizawa said "Again.
Less defensive at the end" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"I was not—" Kurose said "Correction before defense" He inhaled.
"Again" He repeated it. This time the final sentence came cleaner.
"If I say no power, that means words are currently safer" Aizawa nodded.
"Keep that" Kurose wrote: NO POWER MEANS WORDS ARE SAFER Kaminari whispered "Good sentence" Shinso looked pained.
"Unfortunately" Aizawa turned to Ren's screen.
"Public summary. Thirty seconds. You can pass" Ren looked at the board behind Aizawa. Private truth. Operational truth. Public summary. He breathed.
"My name is Ren Akiyama. Candidate role rescue-stabilization. My Quirk supports short controlled stabilization under strict limits. If I say stop, do not encourage me to continue. Take over support or maintain current position if assigned. Do not pull me through a route. Do not ask medical or trauma details during a scenario. My gear alerts me first" Silence. Then Hatsume's voice came from the support bench where she had somehow been allowed to observe.
"Excellent private-first gear mention!" Power Loader said "Volume" Hatsume slapped a hand over her mouth and gave a thumbs-up instead. Recovery Girl's voice came through Ren's speaker.
"Acceptable" Ren looked faintly relieved. Aizawa said "Again. Remove strict. It invites challenge" Ren blinked.
"Strict limits""People hear strict and want exact numbers. Use clear instead" Kurose nodded.
"Clear limits sounds less like hidden weakness and more like operational boundary" Ren looked down.
"Again" He repeated it.
"My name is Ren Akiyama. Candidate role rescue-stabilization. My Quirk supports short controlled stabilization within clear limits. If I say stop, do not encourage me to continue. Take over support or maintain current position if assigned. Do not pull me through a route. Do not ask medical or trauma details during a scenario. My gear alerts me first" Aizawa nodded.
"Keep" Mina whispered "That was good" Bakugo muttered "It was a summary" Todoroki said "Summaries can be good" Bakugo looked exhausted by Todoroki's continued existence. Class 1-B took turns reacting as outsiders. Kendo went first.
"Clear. I would know what not to do" Tetsutetsu nodded.
"Same. I would probably want to help physically, but the do not pull part helps" Awase looked thoughtful.
"For Shinso, do we need to know whether answering him activates the Quirk?" Shinso answered "Operationally, yes. Do not answer active prompts unless you are in the protocol or intentionally responding. Normal conversation is fine. Context matters" Awase nodded.
"That should be in summary" Aizawa looked at Shinso. Shinso grimaced.
"Add?" Kurose said "Add" Shinso tried again.
"My name is Hitoshi Shinso. Candidate hero name Responder. My Quirk is voice-based. In active rescue or training, do not answer prompts as a joke and do not imitate my voice. I use verbal grounding first. If I say no power, words are safer. Do not ask me to use my Quirk because it seems faster" Aizawa nodded.
"Better" Tokage raised her hand.
"What if someone asks why you are not using your Quirk and is being annoying?" Shinso looked at Monoma. Monoma looked offended.
"Why did your gaze find me?" Kendo said "Pattern recognition" Shinso answered "Because the current person still has agency and words are working" Aizawa said "Keep" Kurose wrote: CURRENT PERSON HAS AGENCY AND WORDS ARE WORKING Shiozaki looked at Ren.
"And if someone asks why you stopped when the rescue is not complete?" Ren's throat tightened. He answered slowly.
"Because continuing would make me a second casualty and reduce total rescue capacity" Kurose wrote immediately. Recovery Girl said "Keep that" Bakugo said "Also because stop means stop" Kurose wrote that too. Bakugo glared.
"Stop making me educational" Shinso said "You should stop saying useful things" Bakugo pointed at him.
"You should start running" Aizawa's scarf shifted.
"No" Vlad King leaned against the wall and watched both classes with interest.
"The exam includes other candidates. You will meet students who do not respect your summary" Monoma lifted a hand.
"As an educational villain proxy, may I assist?" Kendo said "You are too eager" Aizawa looked at him.
"Controlled assistance. One line. No cruelty" Monoma straightened.
"Ah, then my entire skill set is restrained" Kendo lifted her hand. He continued quickly.
"One line. Understood" Aizawa nodded toward Ren first. Monoma faced the screen.
"So your Quirk is useful for only a few seconds? That seems rather inefficient for a rescue candidate" The room tightened. Ren's wrist patch pulsed. Gate. He touched the desk.
"Stop" Pain stayed. Recovery Girl said "Map""Ren's room. desk. screen. Monoma line. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. anger. gate narrow. map present" Aizawa said "Response. Public summary level" Ren looked at Monoma.
"Short stabilization at the correct moment can prevent larger harm. My role is not continuous holding. It is clean timing, route support, and stopping before I become another hazard" Monoma blinked. Then smiled with less mockery.
"That is annoyingly difficult to mock" Kendo said "Good" Ren breathed. No private truth given. Enough. Aizawa looked at Shinso. Monoma turned to him with theatrical softness.
"And you. If your Quirk can stop people, withholding it sounds like hesitation" Shinso's eyes sharpened. His collar stayed neutral. He answered.
"Withholding control when words work is not hesitation. It preserves agency. If agency fails before a hazard line, I can escalate under protocol" The room went still. Kurose wrote: ESCALATION UNDER PROTOCOL Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Monoma bowed slightly.
"My work here is morally uncomfortable" Kendo grabbed his collar and moved him back.
"That is enough" The second exercise used Class 1-B as unfamiliar responders in a live mini-scenario. Not full combat. No scoring. Just operational summaries under pressure. The setup was simple. A mock hallway collapse. One seated civilian dummy. One panic marker. One unstable route. Ren and Shinso would enter with Kendo and Tetsutetsu as unfamiliar support candidates. Their job: state public summary, assign safe behavior, and complete containment or extraction depending on the route. Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Consent" Ren breathed.
"I consent to low-strain entry. maximum contact three seconds. no lifting. public summary required before contact. no live command beyond role. stop before maximum if maximum becomes tempting" Recovery Girl said "Accepted" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Consent""I consent to responder role. verbal grounding first. Brainwashing only if panic marker crosses hazard line after two verbal stops or staff override. public summary required before active prompts. collar neutral""Accepted" Kendo and Tetsutetsu stood across from them. Kendo looked serious. Tetsutetsu looked determined enough to become a structural hazard himself. Ren looked at him.
"Do not pull me" Tetsutetsu nodded hard.
"Do not pull""Say full" Tetsutetsu blinked. Ren said "Public summary response" Tetsutetsu straightened.
"You are rescue-stabilization with short controlled stabilization. If you say stop, I do not encourage. I take over support if assigned. I do not pull you through a route" Ren looked at Kendo. She said "Your gear alerts you first. I do not ask medical or trauma details during scenario" Ren breathed.
"Good" Shinso looked at both.
"My Quirk is voice-based. In active rescue, do not answer prompts as a joke or imitate my voice. I use verbal grounding first. If I say no power, words are safer" Kendo nodded.
"If you say no power, we do not pressure Quirk use because faster is not always safer" Tetsutetsu clenched his fists.
"Current person has agency and words are working" Shinso stared.
"That was actually very good" Tetsutetsu beamed.
"Thanks!" Shinso looked away.
"Volume""Sorry!" Aizawa said "Begin" The hallway scenario started with Tokage as panic marker. This was immediately a problem because Tokage treated panic like an opportunity to improvise.
"My friend is in there, the ceiling is probably fine, I can squeeze through, I am very slippery emotionally and physically" Kendo put a hand over her face.
"Setsuna" Tokage grinned.
"Realistic annoying civilian" Shinso stepped forward.
"Tokage. Simulation check. Do you want verbal grounding?"
"Yes""Do you want touch?"
"No""Accepted. Stay before the red line""What if I am extremely heroic?"
"Then you stay before it heroically" Tokage laughed. Then sobered when Shinso did not.
"Okay. Staying" He looked at Kendo.
"Responder summary active. Verbal grounding working. No power" Kendo nodded.
"No power because words are safer" Ren moved toward the seated dummy with Tetsutetsu beside him and Kendo between Tokage and the hazard line. Ren gave his summary as he moved.
"Rescue-stabilization. short contact. stop means take over or hold position. do not pull me" Tetsutetsu nodded.
"Ready to take support if assigned" Ren reached the dummy.
"Dummy stable. right shoulder contact. no lifting. contact now" Pain. Gate. Patch pulse.
"Stop" Narrow. Pain stayed. Graft Lattice threaded through wrist and shoulder. Ren counted silently. One. The route looked unsafe. Two. Tetsutetsu leaned in too early. Ren said "Hold" Tetsutetsu froze. Good. Three became tempting because Tetsutetsu was there and Kendo had the panic marker and Shinso had the room and maybe if Ren held one more second the support handoff would look clean. No.
"Stop" He released. Tetsutetsu took the support point without touching Ren. The dummy remained stable. Ren backed the chair half a meter.
"Stopped before maximum. continuing would make me second hazard. Tetsutetsu has support. route still unsafe. containment recommended" Kendo repeated loudly.
"Containment recommended. route unsafe. support held. no extraction yet" Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Good. Legible. Shinso kept Tokage before the red line.
"Tokage. name your job""Do not become extra problem""More professional""Report hazards and stay clear""Good" The scenario ended with containment, no extraction, no Brainwashing, no pulling, and no one treating the summary like gossip. Aizawa called pause.
"Class 1-B. Report" Kendo answered first.
"Public summaries worked. I knew not to ask history. I knew what stop meant. Repeating containment made the decision legible" Tetsutetsu nodded.
"I wanted to grab the support and maybe Ren too. The summary stopped me. Do not pull was clear" Tokage raised a hand.
"I wanted to be annoying and learned that verbal grounding can be boring on purpose" Shinso looked at her.
"That is one description""Effective boring""Better" Monoma, from observation line, lifted one hand.
"The summary deprived me of several invasive questions" Kendo said "Good" Monoma sighed.
"Yes. Unfortunately" Aizawa looked at Class 1-A.
"Debrief" Yaoyorozu spoke first.
"Public summary allows unfamiliar allies to become safer quickly" Iida nodded.
"It prevents over-helping" Uraraka added "And it protects private truth without making people useless" Kurose wrote that down. PROTECT PRIVATE TRUTH WITHOUT MAKING PEOPLE USELESS Ren looked at the words. That was it. That was the balance. Not silence. Not exposure. Enough. Kaminari raised a hand.
"So public summary is like giving people handles, not keys" The room went quiet. Everyone looked at him. He blinked.
"What?" Jiro stared.
"That was good" Kaminari straightened slowly.
"Private pride now?" Aizawa said "Later" Kurose wrote: HANDLES, NOT KEYS Kaminari whispered "She wrote it" Sero patted his shoulder.
"Later pride is going to be huge" Recovery Girl's voice came from the medical station.
"If pride interferes with hydration, I will intervene" Kaminari whispered "Threat noted" The third exercise was media. Everyone hated it before it began. Vlad King took the lead for this one.
"You may be asked questions by reporters after the license exam. You may be asked by other students in locker rooms, hallways, waiting areas. You may be filmed. You need sentences that do not reveal private truth under pressure" Bakugo's face became thunderous.
"Reporters ask, I leave" Aizawa said "Valid in some contexts. Not all" Bakugo growled. Kurose looked at Ren and Shinso.
"You need refusal language" Ren's mouth went dry. Media questions were not doors. They were hands. He disliked them already. Kurose wrote examples. What happened to your body? Are you stronger now because of the attack? Why didn't you use your Quirk? Is Brainwashing safe? Are you afraid you will lose control? Do you think you deserve the license after everything? The room became cold. Mina whispered "Those are awful" Kurose said "Yes" Monoma looked at the board.
"I would mock most reporters and be wrong to enjoy it" Kendo said "At least you know" Ren looked at the questions. Are you stronger now because of the attack? His wrist patch pulsed. He whispered "Stop" Recovery Girl said "Map""Gym Gamma. media questions. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. anger. no gate spread. map present" Kurose looked at him.
"You can refuse" Ren nodded. Then looked at the question again.
"No private answer. Public answer. My current training is supervised and conditional. The attack does not define my readiness. My choices in the field do" Aizawa nodded.
"Keep" Shinso looked at Is Brainwashing safe? His mouth tightened.
"Bad question" Kurose said "Yes""Public answer. Any Quirk can be unsafe if used badly. My training is built around consent, escalation protocols, and verbal alternatives. Safety is a choice structure, not a personality claim" The room held still. Kurose wrote. SAFETY IS A CHOICE STRUCTURE Aizawa looked at him.
"Keep" Kaminari whispered "That is such a Responder sentence" Shinso looked at him. Kaminari froze.
"Good? Bad?" Shinso sighed.
"Minimal good" Kaminari nodded, accepting victory under supervision. Todoroki looked at the media questions.
"Do we all need answers?" Vlad King said "Yes" Todoroki stared at Are you afraid you will lose control? His left hand flexed.
"Public answer. I train to make control visible before force becomes necessary. Fear is not the public's tool" The room became quiet. Endeavor's shadow did not enter the gym. But the door remembered it. Ren looked away. Not his door. Still proud. Quietly. Bakugo looked at Do you think you deserve the license after everything? His face went blank in a dangerous way. Aizawa watched him. Bakugo spoke through his teeth.
"Deserve is the wrong word. I either meet the standard or I do not" Kirishima looked at him. Kendo looked too. Monoma did not speak. Good survival instinct. Aizawa nodded.
"Keep" Midoriya looked at the same question. His hands shook. He took a breath.
"Deserving is not my answer. Readiness is. I am training to meet the standard without making other people carry my debt" Ren's throat tightened. Toshinori, listening through remote audio, inhaled softly. Aizawa said "Keep" Midoriya looked down. But he did not apologize. Good. The day ended with everyone writing public summaries. Not essays. Summaries. Aizawa enforced word limits with the severity of a man who understood teenagers could turn pain into paragraphs if left alone. Ren wrote his slowly.
My name is Ren Akiyama. Candidate role rescue-stabilization. My Quirk supports short controlled stabilization within clear limits. If I say stop, do not encourage me to continue. Take over support or hold position if assigned. Do not pull me through a route. My gear alerts me first. I do not discuss medical or trauma details during operations. He stared at the final sentence. Not enough? Too much? Operational. Public. Enough. Kurose read it.
"Good""Not too cold?"
"Cold can be useful""Not too evasive?"
"Evasive protects from a question. Boundary names what the question does not get" Ren looked at her.
"Good sentence""Keep it" He did. Shinso wrote his on the small board first before transferring it to the form. My name is Hitoshi Shinso. Candidate hero name Responder. My Quirk is voice-based. In active rescue or training, do not answer prompts as a joke or imitate my voice. I use verbal grounding first. If I say no power, words are safer. Do not ask me to use my Quirk because it seems faster. He looked at it. Then added: If agency remains, I protect it. Aizawa read over his shoulder.
"Keep" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"It sounds dramatic""It is accurate""Disgusting""Still keep" He kept it. That night, the common room was quieter than usual. Not peaceful. Quieter. The day had given everyone handles. Not keys. Kaminari enjoyed that phrase privately for exactly nine minutes before accidentally saying "handles not keys" while reaching for a cupboard and ruining his own mystique. Jiro laughed for twenty seconds. He claimed the laugh as public recognition. She denied it. Normal required training.
In Ren's room, Hana read his public summary once and did not cry. That was clearly difficult. Daichi read it twice.
"The last sentence is good" Ren looked at him.
"Boundary?"
"Yes" Ren placed the summary beside his registration form. The form no longer looked alone. That helped. Across the wing, Shinso placed his summary beside the Akiyama card. No meaning required. If agency remains, I protect it. Both sentences stayed on the desk. Not wall. Not yet. Before sleep, Ren added one line to his board. BOUNDARIES ARE NOT EVASION Shinso added one too. HANDLES, NOT KEYS Neither knew the other had written almost the same lesson in different rooms. They would find out later.
Probably through Kaminari saying it too loudly. For now, it was enough. Not everything needed to be shared to be real. Not everything real needed to be explained to be respected. Private truth could remain private. Operational truth could guide the room. A public summary could give people a handle without handing them a key. That was the line. Thin. Necessary. Trainable. And like every other line worth keeping, it had to be spoken before someone else decided where it belonged.
