Chương 102: Transfer Window

The third morning after the attack, Ren woke to the words on the wall. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE For a few seconds, before memory finished assembling itself, the sentence seemed almost funny. A room had a door that locked from outside, a kettle bolted to the counter, a shelf inspected twice a day, a camera in the corner, a window that did not open, and a movement schedule approved by people with clipboards. The room was very much in charge of several practical things.
Then Ren turned his head and saw Bentaro's laminated portrait wearing Hana's scarf from the shelf, ridiculous and solemn and official enough to have survived security review. He breathed. The room was not in charge of that. That mattered more than it should have. His palms were cool. His arms felt ordinary. His scars were quiet beneath his sleeves. No heat. No thread. No lattice. No fever. No waking image.
No dream retained, though he had woken once in the night with the feeling that something small had clicked against wood far away. The nurse had checked him. Nothing had been there. He had gone back to sleep badly, which Recovery Girl had called "annoyingly normal under the circumstances" Normal had become such an elastic word that it no longer deserved trust. Breakfast arrived with inspection, soft spoon, and a sealed message from Hana. Today, choose something before someone chooses all of it for you.
Even if the choice is small. Your father says Bentaro prefers the left side of the shelf. Ignore him. Bentaro has no interior design training. Daichi had added underneath: False. Bentaro has excellent spatial instincts. Ren read the message twice and looked at the shelf. Bentaro was on the right. He stood, crossed the room, and moved the laminated portrait to the left. The room did not explode. The camera did not object. No staff rushed in. A small stupid thing had moved because he moved it.
Ren stood there with one hand still on the edge of the shelf and felt his throat tighten. A knock came at the glass. Kurose stood outside with two folders and the expression of someone about to say something that had passed through too many meetings. Ren lowered his hand. The door opened after the usual scan. Kurose entered alone. No Recovery Girl. No Aizawa. That was either good or dangerous. Possibly both. She looked at the shelf.
"Bentaro relocation?"
"Spatial instincts""Your father?"
"Yes""Of course" She placed the folders on the bolted desk but did not sit. Ren noticed.
"What happened?"
"Nothing yet""That answer is illegal" Kurose's mouth twitched. Then she became serious again.
"We are planning a movement assessment today" Ren's hands stayed cool. That seemed suspicious.
"Movement assessment""Not release""I assumed""Good. Keep assuming less than hope wants" He looked toward the wall panel. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE The sentence suddenly felt like it had been overheard by administrators and punished with logistics. Kurose opened the first folder.
"Medical says you no longer need continuous medical-room confinement if monitoring remains available. Security says you cannot return to standard student housing, standard classroom space, or any area with uncontrolled object flow. Guardians say this suite is slowly teaching everyone involved to hate kettles. Faculty agrees more movement is necessary if we want you to remain a person and not a protected rumor" Ren sat slowly.
"What movement?"
"A controlled transfer from this secured recovery suite to a temporary residential safe room inside the protected wing" Ren stared at her. Not home. Not dorm. Not class. But residential. A room meant to be lived in rather than watched medically. He hated how much the word mattered. Kurose saw that too.
"It is still restricted""I know""It still has object rules""I know""It still has cameras in shared routes and staff control over entry""I know""It is not freedom" Ren looked at her.
"I know" She closed the folder halfway.
"Then say the part you do not know" Ren's fingers tightened on his knee.
"I do not know if wanting it makes me stupid""No" The answer was immediate. Too immediate to be strategy. Ren looked down. Kurose's voice softened by one degree.
"Wanting movement does not mean you trust the world too much. It means the room is doing what rooms do when people stay too long in them""Which is?"
"Becoming the whole map" Ren looked at the wall panel again. The room was not in charge. But it was trying.
"When?" he asked"Assessment walk late morning. If stable, transfer late afternoon. Your parents will be briefed. Shinso may be cleared for a short route overlap if both of you consent. No target stacking with Bakugo. No Midoriya wing. No press exposure. No exterior route""Inside campus""Inside secured interior campus""That distinction sounds expensive""It is" Ren let out a breath. The room did not change. The air did. A transfer meant doors. Hallways. Corners. Elevators maybe. People checking floors.
Staff timing movement around other movement. Every yes opening another thing to secure. And beyond U. A., if the villains had learned anything, movement would be the word they wanted. Ren said "This creates a window" Kurose nodded.
"Yes""You are doing it anyway""Yes""Why?"
"Because never creating windows is another kind of capture" The sentence landed quietly. Ren hated it. He needed it. Kurose sat then.
"The plan is not to pretend movement is safe. The plan is to make movement honest. Visible route. Prepared destination. Staffed intervals. No improvisation. You are told why, when, and how. If something changes, you are told before you are moved unless immediate danger prevents it" Aizawa's no surprise room changes had survived the meeting. Ren felt that in his chest.
"Who argued for that?"
"Aizawa threatened someone""That sounds right""Your mother also threatened someone politely""Worse""Much" Ren almost smiled. Kurose slid the second folder toward him.
"This is the student-facing version. Read it. Mark words that make you feel like furniture" Ren blinked.
"Is that the official instruction?"
"No""Good" He opened the folder. TEMPORARY RESIDENTIAL SAFE ROOM TRANSFERSTUDENT: AKIYAMA RENPURPOSE: REDUCE MEDICAL CONFINEMENT BURDEN WHILE MAINTAINING TARGET PROTECTION He circled confinement. Then burden. Kurose watched without comment. He read further. The route was listed in plain language. Suite 3A to corridor west. Corridor west to internal lift B. Lift B to protected residential wing level two. Room R-2. Estimated movement time seven minutes. Route cleared ten minutes before transfer.
No other student movement during window. Staff points: Kurose, Aizawa, Recovery Girl, security two, medical one. Optional peer overlap after arrival: Shinso Hitoshi, subject to separate clearance. Guardian visit after room inspection: Hana and Daichi Akiyama. Ren stopped on the phrase no other student movement during window.
"You are stopping a hallway for me" Kurose leaned back.
"We are stopping a hallway because an enemy tried to compress people into objects""That sounds reasonable when you say it that way""It is reasonable""It also makes me hate walking""That is why you mark the sentence, not swallow it" He circled no other student movement. He kept reading. Unknown object protocol. No floor contact with unidentified items. No accepting objects. No reaching for dropped items. If object appears, stop. Staff handles.
If student experiences heat, image, dizziness, or movement impulse, student informs nearest staff. He looked up.
"Student informs nearest staff" Kurose raised an eyebrow. Reading on Amazon or a pirate site? This novel is from Royal Road. Support the author by reading it there.
"Too furniture?"
"Too classroom" She took the page and crossed out student informs nearest staff. She wrote by hand: Ren says it out loud to whoever is there. That was worse grammar. Much better sentence. He nodded. Kurose closed the folder.
"Good""Trustworthy""Today I will accept either" The assessment walk happened at 11: 20. Not 11: 00. Not 11: 15. 11: 20, because apparently the corridor needed five extra minutes after a maintenance worker discovered a dropped screw near a wall panel and the entire route had to be checked again. The screw had been ordinary. The delay had not felt ordinary.
Ren stood at the door of the secured suite in soft shoes with no hard tips, no loose laces, and no objects on him except a laminated ID tag clipped flat to his shirt. He disliked the tag immediately.
"It says escorted movement" Recovery Girl looked at it.
"Yes""It could say student""It could say patient if you prefer to be annoyed differently" Ren glared. Aizawa stood beside the door, scarf wrapped loosely, eyes scanning the corridor.
"It says escorted movement because that is what security needs to see fast""I know""Stop making every label personally philosophical before lunch" Kurose said "Too late" Ren looked at the ID again. Then at the hallway. The corridor outside had never looked so large. He had walked it yesterday, but that had been with Aizawa and Kurose for ten minutes and the route had ended where it began. This one had destination weight. The room behind him would not be the room he returned to if the assessment went well.
His palms stayed cool. Annoyingly. He almost wanted them to heat so the fear would have official language. They did not. Aizawa noticed his glance downward.
"Hands are not the only place fear lives" Ren looked up.
"I know""Then walk" He walked. Kurose on his left. Aizawa slightly ahead. Recovery Girl behind him, cane tapping softly. Two security officers farther apart than Ren liked, one near the next door and one at the end of the corridor. A nurse with a portable monitor stood midway down, pretending not to look ready to intervene. The hallway had been stripped. No carts. No signs hanging from stands. No trash bins. No decorative plants. No stray chairs. No students.
It felt less like a hallway and more like the building holding its breath. Ren hated that. He also hated that it worked. His steps sounded too loud. At the first turn, he saw the tape line leading toward the medical wing. Midoriya was not visible. Of course. Still, the knowledge of him existed behind doors and staff and medicine. Ren's steps slowed. Aizawa did not stop this time. He only said "Forward" One word. Not unkind. Ren kept walking.
Recovery Girl said from behind him "If you turn this into yearning exercise, I will make the next route shorter" Ren almost laughed. That helped more than sympathy would have. They reached the lift. Ren stopped before the doors. He had not considered the lift enough. Small enclosed box. Doors closing. No clear hallway. No immediate side exit. Controlled movement inside a container. His palms warmed. There. Finally. Not high. Enough. Kurose saw his hands.
"Elevator problem?"
"Lift problem""British now?"
"Apparently" Aizawa looked at the doors.
"We can take stairs" Recovery Girl said "Stairs add three turns and two uncontrolled landing checks" Aizawa said "I know" Ren looked at the stairwell door, then the lift. The lift was awful. The stairs were more route. More corners. More chances. The lift was a box. The stairs were a map. Both bad. He hated correct answers.
"Lift" he said Kurose nodded.
"Why?"
"Shorter exposure. Known space. Bad feeling does not make longer route safer" Aizawa pressed the call button with a gloved knuckle.
"Correct" Ren almost told him to use trustworthy. He did not have the energy. The doors opened. Empty. Checked. No objects. No reflective floor beyond standard polished metal, now covered by a matte temporary mat. Someone had thought of that. Good. Terrible. They entered. Aizawa first. Ren and Kurose next. Recovery Girl behind. One security officer stayed outside. One rode with them. The doors closed. Ren's palms heated to moderate. He said it before anyone asked.
"Palms moderate. Door closure. No image" Kurose said "Heard" Not accepted. Not logged. Heard. Good. The lift moved. Seven seconds. Maybe eight. Enough for Ren to imagine spheres appearing in corners, the floor dropping, a click in the ceiling, the entire box folding into a point. No image. No object. Only imagination. He said "Fear only" Aizawa answered "Fear counts. It does not command" The lift opened. Ren stepped out. His palms cooled immediately. He hated that too.
The protected residential wing looked less medical and more artificial. U. A. had clearly tried to make it warm without making it cluttered. The walls were cream instead of white. The floor was soft gray. The lights were lower. Doors had name panels that could be changed from outside. There were no loose decorations, but the wall at the end had a mural painted directly onto it, mountains and sky and an orange cat that looked like someone had lost a bet. Ren stared at the cat.
Kurose said "Present Mic insisted the wing needed morale" Aizawa muttered "He called it emotional acoustics" Recovery Girl said "The cat is hideous" Ren looked at it. The cat was very hideous. Orange, wide-eyed, slightly cross, floating near a badly painted cloud.
"I like it" Aizawa sighed.
"Of course" Room R-2 stood halfway down the hall. The door was open. Ren stopped outside. Inside, the room was larger than the suite. Not much. Enough. A bed. A desk fixed to the wall. A shelf already holding the Bentaro photograph and THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE panel, moved ahead of him. A second blank wall where more approved objects could go. A window into the inner courtyard with a wider view of trees. Still sealed. Still not open. But trees.
A small seating area with two heavy chairs, too large to move quickly. A tea station fixed into the counter, kettle bolted, but the tea case now had labels in Hana's handwriting printed large and laminated above it. GREENBARLEY, UNFORTUNATELYCHAMOMILESUSPICIOUS CITRUS Ren stared. Recovery Girl said "Your mother filed an amendment" Kurose said "It was easier to approve than continue discussing citrus" Daichi had added something too. A laminated note beside the tea station read: Soft spoons prevent duels.
Tactical loss accepted under protest. Ren did not laugh. He breathed in and the room entered him wrong. It was still controlled. Still watched. Still designed around threat. But it had been argued with. That was different. Kurose stood beside him.
"Step in?" Ren stepped into R-2. No click. No heat spike. No vanish. He crossed to the shelf and touched Bentaro's laminated corner. Moved. Still here. The old room had not kept all the pieces. Some had come ahead. His palms cooled.
"Better?" Recovery Girl asked Ren nodded slowly.
"Not free""No one claimed free""Better" Aizawa looked around the room.
"Window line?" The security officer answered "Interior courtyard only. Reinforced. No opening mechanism accessible. Exterior visibility blocked by wall angle""Vent?"
"Sealed and filtered. Panel requires staff tool""Objects?"
"Approved large items only. Inventory checked""Door?"
"Staff control with student-request open request panel. Emergency override external" Ren looked at the panel beside the bed. Student-request open request panel. A button he could press to ask a door to stop being a wall. Not control. Request. Still, better than nothing. Aizawa noticed his gaze.
"It is not symbolic""Yes it is" Aizawa looked pained. Kurose said "He is right""Unfortunately" Recovery Girl added Aizawa muttered something about everyone becoming unbearable. The assessment ended with Ren sitting on the bed, then at the desk, then in one of the heavy chairs, because Recovery Girl wanted to see whether the room changed his body response. His palms stayed cool. His pulse lowered. His shoulders remained tense but less high.
When asked which chair he preferred, he stared at them long enough that Kurose said "Choose before the furniture develops meaning" He chose the one closer to the shelf. Transfer approved. Late afternoon. R-2 would become his room until further review. The walk back to the suite felt strange because it was a return to a room he was about to leave. Ren packed almost nothing because almost nothing was his. That was the part that made him angriest again. A chart. Approved clothing. Medical kit not his.
The Bentaro photo had already gone. The wall panel had already gone. Tea labels were printed in the new room. His phone remained locked somewhere else. Personal items from home were still under review. Packing took four minutes. It should not have. Hana arrived before the official transfer window with Daichi and an expression that made staff step aside more quickly than usual. She looked at the small approved bag on the bed.
"That is all?" Ren looked at it.
"Yes" Her face tightened.
"No" Kurose said "Additional approved objects are pending" Hana did not look at her.
"I know. I am saying no to the feeling, not the logistics" Daichi set Bentaro, still tagged, against the wall outside the room because it was not allowed in.
"Feeling receives objection" Hana crossed to Ren.
"May I?" He nodded. She hugged him. Less carefully than before. Still checked. Still real. When she pulled back, her hands stayed on his shoulders.
"You are moving because this room is too small. Not because you are being moved away from us. Not because you are being hidden better. Not because anyone decided you are easier to store somewhere else" Ren swallowed.
"Okay""No. Not okay. Repeat the part that matters" Daichi murmured "Hana" She looked at him.
"He forgets when the words are cruel" Daichi nodded.
"Fair" Ren looked at his mother.
"I am moving because this room is too small""And?"
"Not because I am easier to store somewhere else" Her grip loosened.
"Good" Daichi stepped forward.
"The new room has the citrus warning""I saw""Your mother fought hard""Citrus needed accountability" Hana said Ren almost smiled. Daichi leaned closer.
"Also, we are in guardian housing on the same campus. Not ideal. Still route""Still route" Ren said Hana's eyes softened. Then she looked at the empty shelf where Bentaro had been.
"Rooms should not get to keep the last word" Ren nodded.
"No" The transfer window opened at 16: 40. That was the phrase everyone used. Transfer window. Ren disliked it immediately. Windows could be watched. Opened. Broken. Missed. Used. Still, he walked. This time Hana and Daichi were not in the route. They would meet him after arrival. Too many people in the corridor increased risk. That was reasonable. It still felt like leaving them behind in a waiting room made of rules. Shinso was cleared for route overlap at the final hallway only. Not the lift.
Not the suite departure. Final hallway. Ren saw him waiting near the orange cat mural, hands empty, expression carefully bored. The sight hit harder than expected. Kurose saw. Of course. But she said nothing. They reached the lift again. Moderate palm heat when doors closed. No image. No object. Doors opened. Heat dropped. The hallway with the ugly cat waited. Shinso straightened.
"Nice cat" Ren looked at the mural.
"It is terrible""I said nice, not good" Aizawa muttered "Do not bond over the cat" Shinso looked at him.
"Too late" Ren breathed. The final hallway did not feel safe. It felt peopled. That was different. They walked to R-2. Shinso stayed half a step back, exactly where consent had placed him. At the door, he stopped.
"Do I enter?" Kurose looked at Ren. Ren said "Yes" Aizawa said "Five minutes" Shinso stepped inside, looked around, and immediately found the tea labels.
"Suspicious citrus survived""Hana""Of course" He looked at the shelf. Bentaro. Wall panel. Blank space.
"This is less awful" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Shinso walked to the window, not too close, and looked at the courtyard.
"Trees" Ren followed his gaze. Small trees. Trimmed. Controlled. Inside walls. Still trees. His palms stayed cool.
"Trees" he said Shinso glanced at him.
"You okay?" Ren considered lying. The room did not feel like the old one. It did not feel like home. It felt like a compromise that had been dragged through teeth and paperwork and love until it became a place he could maybe sleep without becoming a shelf himself.
"No" Ren said "But better" Shinso nodded.
"That's probably the least suspicious answer" Aizawa said "Time" Shinso turned to leave, then paused.
"This room is not in charge" Ren looked at the wall panel.
"No" Shinso looked back at him.
"Do not let it negotiate" Then he left. Hana and Daichi entered after him. The room became smaller and larger at once. Hana inspected every corner. Daichi inspected the tea station and declared the kettle "less oppressed than the first one" Kurose pretended not to hear. Recovery Girl checked Ren's hands and looked reluctantly pleased. The transfer had worked. No object. No breach. No heat spike beyond the lift. No collapse.
Ren sat in the chair near the shelf and watched his parents argue about where a future approved family photo should go. For ten minutes, movement had not become disaster. That was dangerous because it felt good. Somewhere far from U. A., a line appeared in Garaki's feed. INTERNAL TRANSFER COMPLETED. MEDICAL SUITE TO RESIDENTIAL SAFE ROOM. ROUTE: INTERNAL. LIFT USED. PEER OVERLAP AT FINAL HALLWAY. GUARDIAN ACCESS POST-TRANSFER. HEAT RESPONSE MINIMAL. NO INCIDENT. Garaki read it twice. Not because it surprised him.
Because the cleanest data deserved respect. He opened the movement file. The structure had moved. Not far. Not externally. Not carelessly. But it had moved. And every motion had left a shape. Suite departure. Lift tolerance. Final hallway peer overlap. Guardian arrival after transfer. Room adaptation reduces distress. Humane movement successful. Garaki smiled faintly. Successful systems repeated themselves. He added a note. Internal movement tolerated. Future external movement will require stronger justification.
Identify trigger. Behind him, All For One's voice emerged from the dark.
"Did they move him?"
"Yes""Safely?"
"For now""How disappointing for you" Garaki's smile did not fade.
"Not at all. A system that never moves cannot be studied in motion""And this one?"
"This one wants to be humane" All For One was silent for a moment. Then he said "Good" Garaki looked at the route again.
"Yes" In R-2, Ren did not know the movement had already become data. He knew only that the room smelled faintly of new paint, inspected tea, and his mother's hand lotion. He knew Bentaro's photograph had survived relocation. He knew the courtyard trees looked real enough from the chair. He knew the door still locked from outside, but there was a request button within reach. He knew Shinso had seen the room and called it less awful.
He knew Hana had placed her hand flat against the wall panel and said "Correct" like she was swearing at the building. That night, after his parents left for guardian housing and Kurose completed the last check, Ren opened his chart at the fixed desk. He wrote: Movement assessment completed. Lift triggered moderate heat. No image. Heat resolved. Transferred to R-2 residential safe room. Not free. Better. Bentaro and wall panel moved ahead of me. This mattered. Shinso saw the room. Less awful.
Hana made me repeat I am not being stored. Daichi assessed kettle oppression. Courtyard trees visible. No Scar Tissue activation. No unknown object. No hidden heat. He paused. The new room hummed differently. Less medical. Still controlled. He looked at the request button beside the bed. A door he could not open. A door he could ask to open. A yes that was not freedom but not nothing. He wrote the final line. The first safe movement taught me that wanting the door open is not the same as opening the wrong one.
He read it. Trustworthy. Outside, the courtyard trees moved slightly behind sealed glass. Inside, the room listened. It was not in charge. Not entirely. For tonight, that was enough to make sleep feel less like surrender.
