Chương 139: Normal Requires Training

The first morning in the dorms began with three alarms, one kettle, two slammed doors, a whispered apology, and Kaminari shouting "Who moved the floor?" No one had moved the floor. Kaminari had fallen out of bed. Again. Jiro, from the hallway, said "Gravity" Sero opened his door halfway.
"Powerful enemy" Kaminari appeared on the floor of his room with his hair worse than usual and one sock halfway off.
"I thought dorms were supposed to protect us" Todoroki walked past with a towel over one shoulder and a kettle in one hand.
"They do not protect against personal incompetence" Kaminari stared.
"That was meaner because you sounded calm" Todoroki considered this.
"Should I sound excited?"
"No. Somehow no" Bakugo's door opened with enough force to make three people flinch. He stepped into the hall in a tank top, hair already aggressive, expression murderous in the way that meant he had been awake for forty minutes and hated that everyone else was now catching up.
"Stop yelling about floors" Kaminari pointed from the ground.
"You yell about everything" Bakugo looked down at him.
"Because everything is stupid" Iida appeared at the end of the hall in full order, glasses shining, posture sharpened by responsibility and sleep deprivation.
"Good morning, everyone. Please remember that corridor noise should remain moderate until the designated morning activity period" Bakugo stared.
"You scheduled morning?"
"I scheduled morning expectations""That is worse" Mina's door opened. She leaned out with one eye half-closed and hair flattened on one side.
"Iida, if you make morning a committee, I will defect""To where?"
"Night" Asui passed behind her, already awake, already calm, already making everyone else look less amphibiously competent.
"Breakfast first" The hallway accepted that because breakfast had become the only authority higher than teachers, alarms, and existential dread. In the Provisional Track wing, Shinso woke before his alarm. That was not new. The room was. For three seconds, he did not know which ceiling he was looking at. Then the ceiling became a map. Dorm room. bed. desk. window. door. small board on desk. card beside alarm clock. one exit. second exit down hall. Aizawa's office route two corridors over.
common room left turn, then stairs. courtyard visible if window opened. His hand moved under the blanket. No capture scarf. No immediate threat. No one at the door. The room waited without trying to interpret him. Good. Suspicious. He sat up slowly. The small board on his desk faced him. I CAN LEAVE AND STILL BE ALLOWED BACK He hated that the sentence helped. He hated that he had written it. He hated more that he looked at it before standing. A knock came at the door. Three taps. Then a pause. Then Kurose's voice.
"Morning check. No entry unless you answer" Shinso stared at the door. Good. Still annoying.
"I am alive""That was not one of the approved check phrases""You should have chosen better ones""Do you want hallway breakfast information?" He looked at the closed door. Breakfast information. Not come eat. Not you should join. Not everyone is waiting. Information.
"Yes""Common breakfast starts in fifteen. Attendance optional. Food also available as tray pickup from side counter. You can take food and leave. You can sit at edge. You can say no to conversation. Aizawa is present. I am present. Mina has been warned" Shinso blinked.
"Mina specifically?"
"Strongly""Good""Do you want a five-minute warning?" He looked at the board again. The room did not answer for him.
"Yes""Accepted" Footsteps moved away. No one tried the handle. No one said they were glad he was awake. No one made being alive into an invitation. Shinso put his feet on the floor. The room remained normal. Still suspicious. Less hostile. In Ren's transitional room, the first morning began with pain present and not enough of it. He woke at 06: 12 because the wrist gate flickered when he turned in his sleep. For once, the new support patch vibrated softly against his skin before anyone else knew. Private-first.
No red light. No alarm. No room deciding for him before he had the chance. Ren opened his eyes. Door. room. temporary sign under plaque. bed. desk. winter blanket. Hana asleep in the chair. Daichi asleep with one hand on the box of room things. Recovery Girl's remote monitor dock unplugged because he had chosen no overnight live feed unless thresholds were crossed. optional sensor patch active. left wrist. right shoulder. ribs. less pain. hunger. fear. room not R-2. room not home. room still room.
The support patch pulsed again. Gate. He whispered "Stop" The pulse changed rhythm once, confirming the narrowing. Not announcing. Not celebrating. Not asking the room to stare. Pain stayed. Less than yesterday. Still his. Hana stirred anyway because mothers had sensor systems that did not require Quirks.
"Ren?"
"Here" She sat up, blinking.
"Warm or cold?"
"Warm. hungry. less pain. gate stopped" Daichi woke halfway through the sentence.
"Here" Recovery Girl's voice came through the approved bedside speaker after a soft chime.
"Morning threshold check. Student initiated stop during sleep transition. Numbers acceptable. Do not turn breakfast into philosophy" Ren stared at the speaker.
"Good morning to you too""Eat" Hana rubbed her face.
"She is not wrong""She is never wrong about food. It makes her dangerous" Daichi looked at the blank plaque and temporary paper under it. REN'S ROOM The paper was still there. Temporary. Enough.
"Breakfast in room?" he asked Ren looked toward the door. Hall sounds were faint. Not too close. Not empty. Dorm building awake. Class 1-A noise somewhere beyond the protected route. Shinso maybe awake. Common room maybe too much. Room maybe too small if he stayed only because leaving frightened him. He breathed.
"Door open first" Hana nodded. Daichi stood carefully and opened the door halfway after Ren gave the sign. Hallway air entered. No one entered with it. Good. Ren listened. Distant voices. a kettle. someone complaining about rice. someone probably Kaminari saying "I am not banned from ladles" and Jiro saying "You are now" Normal. Too much. Maybe.
"Tray here" Ren said Hana nodded.
"Tray here" Daichi asked "Door?" Ren looked at the opening.
"Open""How much?"
"Half" Daichi adjusted it. A room with a way out. Not breakfast in common room. Not hiding. Half. That was the morning's first compromise. It counted. Common breakfast was a disaster in a controlled environment. Sato had made rice, eggs, soup, and enough toast to prevent Kaminari from experimenting. Yaoyorozu created an emergency serving spoon after Iida declared the current spoon too small for equitable distribution.
Bakugo cooked fish because apparently incompetence offended him enough to become culinary excellence. Todoroki made tea with terrifying solemnity. Asui placed cups where people would not knock them over. Mina tried to make a welcome breakfast sign and was intercepted by Kurose before the marker uncapped.
"It says welcome breakfast" Mina protested Kurose looked at the paper.
"It says welcome breakfast with sparkles""Sparkles are not meaning. Sparkles are decoration""Decoration can become meaning under pressure" Mina looked at Jiro.
"Help" Jiro sipped water.
"I told you to use no sparkles" Mina looked betrayed.
"You did""Yes" Shinso entered during this legal dispute and immediately considered leaving. The room noticed him. Then pretended not to notice too hard. That was also noticeable. Kaminari stared at his bowl with the intensity of a man resisting social combustion. Sero looked at the ceiling. Kirishima smiled and then forced his face into neutral expression so abruptly he looked like he had been unplugged. Iida inhaled and did not speak. Mina folded the sparkle sign behind her back.
Uraraka gave a small wave from the table edge. Shinso stopped at the doorway. Aizawa, already seated in the corner with coffee and despair, said "No one perform normal" The room exhaled. Shinso looked at him.
"That sentence helped""I know" Kurose pointed to the side counter.
"Food options. Sit, take, leave, or combine" Shinso approached the counter. Todoroki stood near the kettle.
"Tea?" Shinso looked at him.
"Meaning?"
"No""Type?"
"Green. black. barley, unfortunately" From the hallway, Ren's voice came through the half-open medical route speaker that Hana had activated by request.
"Barley slander continues" This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings. Everyone froze. Shinso turned toward the small speaker on the counter.
"Are you haunting breakfast?" Ren's voice answered "Half participation" Kaminari whispered "Dorm ghosts already" Jiro said "Do not make him a ghost""Right. Sorry. Half remote student" Ren said "Conditionally accepted" Mina clutched her sparkle sign to her chest.
"Can I say good morning?" Kurose looked at the speaker. Ren said "Yes" Mina leaned toward the counter as if the speaker were a person and then corrected herself by standing normally.
"Good morning, Ren""Good morning, Mina" She looked like she had passed an exam. Aizawa said "Do not become emotional about greetings" Mina whispered "Too late" Recovery Girl's voice came through Ren's side of the line, muffled but audible.
"Eat" The common room paused. Ren said "I am eating" Recovery Girl said "Talking is not eating" Shinso took barley tea because the absurdity had become tradition too quickly to resist.
"No meaning" he said to Todoroki Todoroki poured.
"No meaning" Kaminari lifted a hand slowly.
"Can I ask if you want to sit?" Shinso looked at him.
"You just did" Kaminari's face blanked.
"I did""Yes""Was that wrong?"
"No" Kaminari stared like he had discovered a door.
"Do you want to sit?"
"Edge" Uraraka shifted her tray slightly, not clearing a whole heroic space, just making the edge easier.
"Edge is open" Shinso looked at the seat. Then at the exit. Then at the food.
"Fine" He sat at the edge. No one applauded. Good. Ren listened from his room while eating breakfast at his desk with Hana and Daichi nearby and the door half-open. The speaker carried only common audio, not private conversations. He had chosen that. Common room sound without common room demand. The soup was acceptable. The rice was better than medical rice because Bakugo had apparently threatened the kitchen into competence by proximity. The protein drink remained morally questionable.
He listened as Shinso said "No meaning" three more times, each time with slightly less defensive force. He listened as Kaminari asked for soy sauce normally and did not look relieved when Shinso passed it. He listened as Iida began "Regarding communal schedules" and stopped after Uraraka gently tapped the board where ASK FIRST had been taped. He listened as Bakugo shouted "Who the hell put my pan in the wrong place?" and Sato answered "You did" and Bakugo went silent for three seconds. Normal required training.
Apparently everyone was failing and passing at once. At 08: 30, Aizawa moved them from breakfast to the first official dorm-adjacent training block. Not physical. The class groaned anyway. The whiteboard in the common room read: NORMALITY MODULE 1PRESENCE WITHOUT INVASION Kaminari stared.
"Normality has modules?" Aizawa said "For you people, yes" Mina raised her hand.
"Is this because of the sparkle sign?"
"Partly""I regret nothing" Kurose stood beside the board.
"Today's exercise is simple. You will practice invitations, refusals, exits, and non-defensive correction. This is not therapy. This is dorm conduct, rescue conduct, and Provisional Track conduct overlapping because apparently all of you require the same skills in different costumes" Sero whispered "It is therapy with uniforms" Jiro whispered "Shut up before she hears" Kurose heard.
"We begin with invitations" The class suffered. Ren watched through the common room screen from his desk. Shinso sat in the common room edge seat, arms crossed, tea untouched now. His body looked ready to flee, but he had not. That counted. Aizawa wrote a scenario. You want to invite a classmate to eat with the group. Mina was chosen first because she had caused the sparkle incident and because Kurose believed in consequences. She turned toward Shinso. Then froze. Shinso stared back.
"You look like I am a bomb""You kind of are socially" Aizawa said "Mina""Right. Sorry. Correction. I am nervous because I do not want to make eating weird" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Better" Mina inhaled.
"Do you want to eat with us tonight? You can say no. You can also sit at the edge. You can also take food and leave. I will not make a face" Aizawa said "Too many options at once" Mina deflated.
"Too much?" Shinso nodded.
"Yes""Okay. Again" She breathed.
"Do you want to eat with us tonight?" Shinso said "No" Mina's face twitched. She caught it.
"Accepted" Kurose nodded.
"Good. Now no explanation extraction" Mina pressed her lips together. It visibly hurt. Ren spoke through the screen after Kurose nodded.
"Face was almost disappointment" Mina turned toward the screen.
"I know. I killed it" Shinso said "Mostly" Mina pointed at him.
"That is progress""It is" That landed softly. Mina looked down, then up.
"Thanks""No meaning""Minimal meaning" Shinso considered.
"Acceptable" The room breathed. Next, Iida had to practice receiving a refusal without drafting a policy. This proved more difficult. He turned to Todoroki.
"Would you like to participate in a rotating cleaning responsibility schedule with clearly defined roles and equitable time distribution?" Todoroki looked at him.
"No" Iida inhaled. Then stopped. His entire body fought a war.
"Accepted" Aizawa said "Good" Iida's right hand trembled. Kaminari whispered "He is being so brave" Jiro elbowed him. Then Bakugo had to practice making an invitation. Aizawa chose him because Aizawa believed in targeted suffering. Bakugo stared at the board.
"No" Aizawa said "That is refusal practice. We are on invitations" Bakugo glared.
"Invite who?" Aizawa looked at the room.
"Midoriya" The room froze. Midoriya looked up.
"Me?" Bakugo's face twisted.
"This is stupid" Aizawa said "Yes" Bakugo looked like the word had stolen his best defense. He turned toward Midoriya without fully facing him.
"Food later. Training notes. If you want" Midoriya blinked.
"Food later?" Bakugo snarled "I said what I said" Kurose said "Too unclear" Bakugo rounded on her.
"What part was unclear?"
"The activity, the location, whether the invitation is friendly, hostile, or a trap""It is not a trap!" Kaminari whispered "That is what traps say" Bakugo pointed at him.
"I will end you" Aizawa's scarf shifted.
"No ending in common room" Bakugo took one breath through his nose. Then looked at Midoriya again.
"I am eating in the common room after afternoon training. I am looking at your body-map sheet because it is probably terrible. You can sit there if you want. No crying" Silence. Ren stared at the screen. Shinso looked like he wanted popcorn. Midoriya's eyes went wide.
"Yes" Bakugo snapped "Do not look like that" Midoriya tried to rearrange his face and failed.
"Accepted" Aizawa said "Terrible delivery. Clear invitation" Kurose added "No crying was unnecessary and emotionally defensive" Bakugo muttered something violent. Kirishima looked proud enough to become a target. Bakugo saw him.
"Do not" Kirishima looked at the floor.
"I said nothing""Your face is loud" Ren spoke softly through the screen.
"Bad emotional environment" The entire common room turned toward him. Bakugo stared. Then snorted once.
"I hate that phrase" Todoroki said "It is useful" Bakugo pointed at him.
"You started it" Todoroki nodded.
"Yes" The module continued until everyone was uncomfortable enough to have learned something. Uraraka practiced saying no to taking extra chores because she felt guilty that her parents were not there helping move things. Asui practiced asking for quiet without apologizing for needing it. Kaminari practiced admitting fear before making a joke. Jiro practiced accepting that compliments could be brief and still real. Todoroki practiced saying he wanted tea alone without making it sound like weather evacuation.
Sero practiced not turning awkwardness into group entertainment. Midoriya practiced not asking Ren to review his sheet. That one happened quietly. Kurose placed the body-map draft on the table between Midoriya, Aizawa, and Toshinori's remote audio. Ren watched from the screen but his audio was muted by his own condition. Midoriya looked at the muted icon. Then looked at Aizawa.
"I want to ask him" Aizawa said "I know""I am not going to""Good" Midoriya swallowed.
"Can I say that I want to?"
"Yes""I want to ask him because he explains things in a way that makes sense and because part of me thinks if he says it is right, then I am allowed to trust it" The room went quiet. Toshinori's breath came softly through the speaker. Aizawa said "And what is the problem with that?" Midoriya looked at the paper.
"It makes him responsible for whether I trust my own body""Correct" Midoriya's hands clenched.
"Then I am asking you. And Toshinori. And Recovery Girl later if needed" Toshinori's voice came through, rough but steady.
"I am here" Midoriya's face changed. Small. Important. Aizawa picked up the sheet.
"Good. We review" Ren watched without hearing the rest. That was better. That was worse. That was the point. He leaned back and mapped. Room. desk. screen. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl near hall. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. wanting to help. not helping. okay. The wrist gate stayed quiet. At lunch, Class 1-A had its first normal failure. It came from kindness. That made it harder. Mina had not made a sign. She had not made a card. She had not brought sparkles.
She had placed a small extra dessert cup on the side counter with a sticky note. FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS ONE No names. No pressure. Good. Mostly. Kaminari saw it and said "Oh, extra pudding for Shinso and Ren?" The room froze. Mina's face went white. Shinso, who had been reaching toward the counter, stopped. Ren's speaker was off, thankfully. Aizawa looked at Kaminari. Kaminari's face collapsed.
"I did it. I made it weird" Kurose stepped in before shame became spectacle.
"Correction before defense" Kaminari turned to Shinso.
"I turned general food into targeted food because I was thinking about welcoming you and Ren. That made it pressure. Sorry. Correction. The pudding is general. I will take one first if that helps make it general again" Shinso stared. Then looked at the pudding. Then at Kaminari.
"Take one" Kaminari took one like it was a live explosive. Mina breathed again. Shinso took one after him.
"No meaning" Kaminari nodded too fast.
"No meaning" Jiro said "Slow face" Kaminari attempted slow face. It was terrible. Shinso looked at him.
"Your normal face is worse than pressure""That is not my fault""It probably is" The room recovered. Mostly. Mina waited until Shinso had left the counter before looking at Kurose.
"I really tried" Kurose's face softened.
"I know""I still messed up""Yes" Mina's eyes shone.
"Correction before defense""Exactly" Mina nodded hard. Then took a pudding cup and ate it with the expression of someone punishing dessert. In Ren's room, lunch came with a pudding cup. Not because of Shinso. Not because of Ren. Because Sato had made too many, and the delivery note said exactly that. SATO MADE TOO MANYTHIS IS A LOGISTICS DESSERT Ren stared at the note.
"Logistics dessert" Hana smiled.
"Good category" Daichi read the note.
"Trustworthy" Recovery Girl checked the tray.
"Approved" Ren ate the pudding. It was very good. He chose not to say that aloud because then dessert might gain influence. Afternoon brought the first corridor overlap between Ren and Shinso without adult scheduling. Mostly. Ren was doing a short chair route from his room to the courtyard entrance. Shinso was returning from the common room with a notebook and a face that said society had happened to him. They met at the junction where Provisional Track route tape shifted from blue to gray. Both stopped.
Ren looked at Shinso.
"Normality module?" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"You watched""Partially""Traitor""Student""Same problem" Ren looked toward the courtyard. Shinso looked toward the same path. No adults spoke. Aizawa was at the far end of the hallway pretending to read something on his phone. Kurose was near the stairwell pretending to check a notice board. Recovery Girl was probably listening through the walls by force of will. Ren said "Courtyard?" Shinso looked at him.
"Invitation?"
"Yes""Meaning?"
"Low""Options?" Ren considered.
"Walk beside chair. walk behind. say no. say later. say insulting thing and leave" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Too many options" Ren blinked.
"Right" He tried again.
"Courtyard?" Shinso looked at the exit route.
"Yes. Edge""Accepted" Daichi was not pushing the chair this time. A mobility assistant was present, but Ren had the hand control and the chair moved slowly at his command. That was new. Not independent. Not alone. His. They entered the courtyard. The tree moved in the afternoon air. No one else was there. Shinso walked at the edge of the chair path, neither behind nor beside enough to imply escort. Good. Ren stopped near the bench.
"Room?" Shinso sat on the bench's far end.
"Still normal""Worse?"
"Less worse""Good""Not good good""Good operational distinction" Shinso groaned.
"We need new phrases""No" They sat in silence. It did not become comfortable quickly. That was fine. Shinso looked at the courtyard path.
"Common room is loud""Yes""You are lucky" Ren glanced at him.
"Room-bound?" Shinso winced.
"Bad wording""Yes""Correction. You are spared some common-room stupidity due to medical route restrictions""Accepted""Still lucky sometimes" Ren thought.
"Sometimes" Shinso nodded.
"Sometimes unlucky""Often""Both""Always" The wind moved through the leaves. Ren's wrist patch pulsed once. Gate flicker. He whispered "Stop" Shinso looked over but did not ask too fast. Ren breathed.
"Okay" Shinso nodded.
"Private alert?"
"Yes""Good gear?" Ren looked at the wrist.
"Gear that asks" Shinso looked at his own hands.
"Hatsume asked if support gear can protect the user from extension" Ren turned slightly.
"She said that?"
"Yes""Terrifyingly good""I know. I hate it" Ren looked at the tree.
"Normal can protect person from extension too" Shinso stared at him.
"That is awful""Yes""Because it is right""Yes" Shinso leaned back.
"Normality module infected you""Unfortunately" They stayed five minutes. At four minutes and thirty seconds, Ren felt the courtyard becoming meaningful in ways he had not consented to. He looked at Shinso.
"Return" Shinso stood.
"Accepted" No why. Good. They returned. At dinner, Ren came to the common room for seven minutes. Not because the morning had gone well. Because morning going well did not buy escalation. He came because he chose seven minutes after a map check, medical clearance, and two arguments with Recovery Girl, one of which he lost so badly that the final agreement included a portable nutrition backup. The common room had been warned. No one applauded. No one moved chairs dramatically.
Iida had placed a small route marker between entrance and edge table. Not flashy. Useful. Ren looked at it and said "Good" Iida nearly levitated with restrained pride. Bakugo said "Do not look like you won a medal for tape" Iida adjusted his glasses.
"I am accepting operational feedback""Your face is not" Ren sat at the edge of the table. Hana and Daichi stayed nearby but not hovering. Recovery Girl sat in a chair with the expression of a dragon supervising toddlers. Aizawa stood by the door. Kurose leaned near the counter. Shinso sat two seats away, edge position. Seven minutes. Mina placed no special food in front of Ren. Sato said "There is extra rice if wanted" General. Good. Ren said "Maybe" No one turned maybe into yes. Good.
Kaminari told a story about falling out of bed that grew more heroic each time he repeated it. Jiro corrected structural inaccuracies. Sero added dramatic sound effects until Aizawa looked at him. Todoroki offered tea to the table in general. Uraraka asked Asui if she had enough space. Iida tried not to comment on elbow placement and succeeded for four minutes. Normal. Messy. Trained. Ren ate three bites. The room did not stop to watch him. At six minutes, the wrist patch pulsed. Not gate. Fatigue threshold.
Private-first. He looked at the timer. Six minutes twenty. Not seven. His chest tightened. The room was working. He wanted to reach seven. Proof. No. He touched the brake.
"Stop" The table stopped. Too fast. Then corrected into stillness. Aizawa stepped forward.
"Route back" Ren nodded.
"Chair. room. left wrist okay. ribs tired. fatigue threshold. stopping before seven" Mina's face did not fall. Kaminari did not say but you were close. Midoriya's hands tightened under the table and stayed there. Bakugo looked at Ren's plate.
"Seven was arbitrary anyway" Ren looked at him.
"Yes""Six twenty is uglier""Yes""Good" Ren breathed.
"Good" Recovery Girl stood.
"Return" Hana touched the chair only after Ren nodded. Daichi picked up the portable tray without comment. As Ren left, Shinso said "Six twenty. terrible number" Ren looked back.
"Disgusting""Respectable" Ren nodded once.
"Accepted" The common room stayed still until he was gone. Then Kaminari whispered "I did not say you were close" Jiro patted his shoulder.
"Growth" Kaminari looked deeply proud. Aizawa said "Do not become proud of not making things worse" Kaminari deflated. Kurose said "You may become a little proud later. Privately" Kaminari whispered "Private pride" Bakugo muttered "This place is a cult" Todoroki said "With tea" Bakugo turned.
"That does not improve it""It improves many things" Shinso drank barley tea and looked toward the hallway where Ren had left. No one asked him what it meant that Ren had joined dinner for six minutes and twenty seconds. Good. He did not know yet. Maybe it meant nothing. Maybe it meant the room had worked for six minutes and twenty seconds. Maybe meaning could be optional until it was chosen. That night, Ren added one note to his desk board. SIX TWENTY IS ALLOWED TO COUNT Hana read it and smiled. Daichi nodded.
Recovery Girl said "It counts if you sleep now" Ren slept badly. But the room opened when he needed to check the hallway. The door closed when he returned. Across the wing, Shinso added a second line under his first. I CAN SAY YES AND STILL CHOOSE NO LATER He stared at it. Then placed the board back on the desk. Not wall. Not yet. Normal required training. So did yes. So did no.
So did eating pudding without meaning, standing at doorways, leaving before seven minutes, asking without pushing, correcting without defending, and letting a room become familiar one ugly number at a time. The dorms did not become home that day. They became a place where Ren stopped at six minutes and twenty seconds and everyone let it count. They became a place where Shinso took pudding after someone corrected the pressure around it. They became a place where Midoriya asked someone else first.
Where Bakugo made an invitation badly enough to be real. Where Mina killed disappointment on her face and did not demand credit for the murder. Where Class 1-A learned that welcome was not a feeling thrown at someone. Welcome was behavior. Repeated. Corrected. Asked again. And sometimes, if the room was lucky, accepted for six minutes and twenty seconds.
