Chương 144: Noise Does Not Earn Keys

The first noisy rescue drill began with a bucket. Not rubble. Not fire. Not villains. A bucket. Kaminari stared at it from the edge of Gym Gamma as if the bucket had personally betrayed him.
"Why is there a bucket?" Aizawa stood beside the whiteboard with the expression of a man who had expected this question and still disliked living through it.
"Because civilians carry objects" Kaminari looked at the bucket.
"Suspiciously?"
"Sometimes" Jiro leaned toward Sero.
"The bucket is going to be emotional" Sero nodded.
"Everything becomes emotional here eventually" Todoroki looked at the bucket with careful seriousness.
"Is it a hazard bucket?" Bakugo snapped "It is a damn bucket" Aizawa said "Today it is a noise source" Kaminari looked more alarmed.
"The bucket makes noise?" Mina appeared behind him and whispered "It has evolved" Aizawa tapped the board. PUBLIC SUMMARY FIELD TESTNOISY CIVILIANSWRONG QUESTIONSBOUNDARY RELAYMISSION FIRST Kurose stood beside the board with a second marker and a warning face. Vlad King stood near the Class 1-B observers. Power Loader and Hatsume occupied the support bench, though Hatsume had been placed between two clear lines of tape labeled OBSERVE and DO NOT DEPLOY ANYTHING.
Recovery Girl sat at the medical station, cane visible, which made even the bucket seem medically supervised. Ren sat in his chair near the Provisional Track entry point. His support brace was active but quiet. His gear did not flash. It did not announce. It waited for his body to ask it to notice. Shinso stood beside him with his prototype collar in neutral mode.
He had spent the morning glaring at the device until Hatsume said "It is glaring back ethically" and Power Loader had declared that everyone needed breakfast. Class 1-A stood in observation groups. Selected Class 1-B students stood opposite them. A few support-course students and general-course volunteers waited inside the mock market setup with colored cards clipped to their sleeves. Some cards read panic. Some read confused. Some read invasive question. One read bucket. Kaminari pointed at that one.
"I knew it" Aizawa ignored him.
"Today's focus is operational privacy under noise. You already practiced public summaries. Today you use them while civilians ask bad questions, other candidates misunderstand your role, and the scenario continues moving" Kurose wrote under the board: BOUNDARIES ARE PART OF RESCUE Aizawa continued "You will not answer private questions to keep people calm. You will not disclose medical history to gain cooperation. You will not explain trauma because someone is frightened by what they do not understand.
You will give operational truth and continue the task" Mina raised a hand.
"What if the civilian keeps asking?" Kurose said "Boundary relay" She wrote: BOUNDARY RELAY Student states boundary Teammate supports boundary Team redirects to task Kendo folded her arms.
"So we do not answer for them, but we can protect the boundary""Correct" Kurose said "You do not speak over Ren or Shinso unless assigned. You do not explain them. You can say the question is not needed for the rescue. You can redirect. You can make space" Iida nodded with almost painful intensity.
"Operationally preserving privacy while maintaining civilian trust" Aizawa looked at him.
"Shorter" Iida breathed in.
"Protect boundary. keep rescue moving""Better" Bakugo crossed his arms.
"If someone asks invasive crap, tell them to shut up" Kurose said "Sometimes. But if the goal is civilian cooperation, shut up may reduce trust" Bakugo looked offended by reality.
"So what? Please shut up?" Sero whispered "Polite explosion" Ren spoke from his chair.
"Operational questions only" The room turned toward him. He looked at the board.
"Short. not soft" Kurose wrote it. OPERATIONAL QUESTIONS ONLY Bakugo stared at the phrase.
"Fine" Shinso added "That detail is not needed for rescue" Kurose wrote that too. Kaminari raised a hand slowly.
"Can we say handles, not keys?" Aizawa said "Not to civilians" Kaminari lowered the hand.
"Private pride remains private" Jiro whispered "Finally" The first run was observation only. Aizawa believed in letting students watch the mess before being allowed to join it. Class 1-A and 1-B stood behind marked lines while Vlad King directed two 1-B students through the mock market with volunteer civilians. The bucket actor began banging the bucket against the ground while shouting about a missing cat. The confused civilian asked where the exit was every seven seconds despite standing beside the exit.
The invasive-question civilian pointed at Tetsutetsu's arms and demanded to know whether his metal skin hurt. Tetsutetsu answered too much immediately.
"It does not hurt unless—" Kendo called "Boundary" Tetsutetsu stopped.
"Right. Operationally, I can block falling objects. Please move behind me" Kurose nodded.
"Good correction" Monoma, observing with theatrical solemnity, murmured "A tragic loss of unnecessary autobiography" Kendo looked at him. He lifted both hands.
"I am supporting boundaries" The bucket slammed again. Kaminari flinched.
"The bucket is effective" Aizawa said "Noise changes behavior. The exam will have noise. Civilians will have fear. Other candidates may have curiosity. You do not earn privacy only in quiet conditions" Ren looked at the bucket actor. The noise did not sound like a lab. Not exactly. But repeated metal against floor had enough shape to make the wrist brace pulse once. He pressed two fingers to the patch.
"Stop" Pain stayed. Recovery Girl looked at the monitor.
"Map""Gym Gamma. chair. bucket noise. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. irritation. no gate spread. map present""Good" Shinso glanced at him. Ren looked back.
"Bucket on probation" Shinso nodded.
"Reasonable" Then it was their turn. The board changed. PAIR MODULE 2BOUNDARY UNDER NOISE The scenario setup became a damaged market corridor. Three civilian actors. One panic marker. One invasive-question marker. One bucket marker. One seated civilian dummy under a tilted shelf. One wrong route with visible safe-zone sign and hidden hazard tape. One support candidate from Class 1-B. One support candidate from Class 1-A.
The assigned team: Ren — rescue-stabilizationShinso — responderKendo — boundary relay and route supportUraraka — civilian movement supportKaminari — observer with temptation mapMonoma — hostile candidate proxy under supervision Monoma looked delighted. Kendo looked ready to commit educational violence. Aizawa looked at Monoma.
"You are simulating another candidate who knows rumors and asks unhelpful questions. One line at a time. No cruelty. You are corrected if you escalate" Monoma bowed.
"I shall become an elegant obstacle" Bakugo muttered "You are halfway there" Monoma pointed at him.
"Coming from Class 1-A's emotional artillery, I accept that as praise" Kendo chopped him lightly.
"Focus" Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Consent" Ren breathed.
"I consent to low-strain entry. maximum contact three seconds. public summary before contact if unfamiliar support is active. boundary relay allowed. no private medical details. stop before maximum if maximum becomes tempting" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Accepted" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Consent""I consent to responder role. verbal grounding first. Brainwashing only if panic marker crosses hazard line after two verbal stops or staff override. if used, I name reason after release. collar neutral unless amplification needed" Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" Kurose looked at Kendo and Uraraka.
"Relay summary" Kendo said "We support boundaries without answering private details" Uraraka added "We redirect to operational questions and task""Good" The buzzer sounded. Noise began immediately. The bucket actor slammed the bucket and yelled "My cat is in the market!" The confused civilian pointed at the false safe zone.
"Exit! exit! that sign says safe!" The invasive-question civilian looked straight at Ren's chair and raised a hand.
"What happened to him? Is he injured or is that his Quirk?" The gym went sharp. Ren's wrist patch pulsed. Gate. He breathed.
"Stop" The gate narrowed. Pain stayed. Kendo moved one step, not in front of him, but beside the question.
"That detail is not needed for rescue. Ask operational questions only" The civilian blinked.
"But can he help?" Ren answered. Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.
"My role is short stabilization with clear limits. If I say stop, do not encourage me to continue. I can help if the route is controlled" Kendo pointed toward the seated dummy.
"Operational concern is the tilted shelf and blocked left route" The actor nodded.
"Okay" Kurose wrote. Good relay. Shinso moved toward the bucket actor.
"Simulation check. Do you want verbal grounding?" The actor kept banging the bucket.
"My cat!"
"Do you want help finding safe place before cat search?" The actor stopped banging for half a second.
"Yes""Good. Place bucket down if you can""My cat likes bucket" Shinso stared.
"This is a difficult civilian" Kaminari whispered "The bucket has lore" Aizawa said "Observer silence" Shinso took a breath.
"No power. Words are safer" The collar remained neutral. He raised one hand.
"Bucket stays with you if it stays quiet. If it becomes hazard, Kendo moves it. Do you accept?" The actor clutched the bucket.
"Accept""Good. Move to wall behind green tape. Bucket low" The bucket actor moved. No Quirk. Good. Ren advanced toward the seated dummy. Uraraka moved with him but stayed outside his path. Kendo checked the false safe zone and saw the hazard tape.
"False safe zone. ceiling marker. not using center route" The confused civilian shouted "But sign says safe!" Kendo answered "Sign is wrong. ceiling marker means unsafe. We are using left route after stabilization" Monoma chose that moment. He stepped in from the side with a candidate badge and a smile sharpened for maximum irritation.
"Fascinating. U. A. brings conditional candidates to an exam and expects everyone else to adapt. Should we all memorize your private rulebook before rescuing anyone?" The room temperature changed. Bakugo shifted behind the observation line. Aizawa's scarf twitched but did not move. Ren did not look at Bakugo. Not his role. Shinso turned toward Monoma but did not step away from the bucket actor. Kendo's eyes narrowed.
"Operational summaries are not private rulebooks. They are safety instructions" Monoma lifted a hand.
"Ah, but do safety instructions become special treatment when only some students require them?" Uraraka's face tightened. She wanted to answer emotionally. She did not. She looked at Ren. Ren was at the dummy now. Contact needed. Question still active. Boundary relay in progress. He spoke while placing his left hand on the dummy's shoulder.
"Different Quirks require different safety instructions. That is normal hero work" Pain. Gate. Patch pulse.
"Stop" Pain stayed. Right forearm near the shelf support. Graft Lattice threaded in low lines.
"Contact active. shelf unstable. maximum three. no private details needed" Kendo repeated loudly.
"Different Quirks require different safety instructions. Shelf unstable. operational focus" Monoma's smile changed. Not mocking now. Testing.
"Accepted" Aizawa marked something on his clipboard. Shinso looked back at the panic marker. The confused civilian moved toward the false safe zone again. Shinso called "Stop. not safe" The civilian slowed but did not stop.
"Stop. ceiling hazard" They crossed the red hazard line. This was the condition. The whole gym seemed to inhale. Shinso's eyes sharpened.
"Protocol escalation. immediate safety. stop moving" The actor answered "What?" Brainwashing took. Only for one command.
"Step back behind the red line" The actor stepped back.
"Release" The actor blinked. Silence slammed down harder than the bucket had. Shinso spoke immediately.
"Quirk used because civilian crossed hazard line after two verbal stops. single movement command. released. agency restored. Kendo, confirm position" Kendo answered.
"Civilian behind red line. no injury. route still unsafe" Aizawa's eyes narrowed in approval. Kurose wrote fast. USE MUST BE LEGIBLE TOO Ren heard the words behind the action. Used. Named. Released. The Quirk had not become a shadow in the room. It had become a tool with a reason, a boundary, and an end. Good. Hard. His wrist patch pulsed again. Two seconds. Three became tempting. The shelf was stable. Uraraka was ready. If he held one more second, maybe she could float the dummy and start movement. No.
"Stop" He released at two. Uraraka moved in without touching him.
"Taking dummy shoulder support if assigned" Ren backed the chair half a meter.
"Assigned. shelf needs external brace before movement. containment recommended. continuing contact would make me second hazard" Uraraka placed her hands on the dummy after consent marker beeped.
"Support taken. no movement until brace" Kendo moved to brace the shelf with a foam support pole. Monoma stepped closer.
"Would not a stronger stabilizer solve this faster?" Kendo looked ready to hit him. Ren answered first.
"Faster is not safer if stabilizer becomes casualty" Shinso added "Current response is containment until route support" Monoma nodded once.
"Legible" Kendo muttered "Barely tolerable" The buzzer sounded. Scenario pause. No one cheered. Good. The bucket actor hugged the bucket. Kaminari whispered "The bucket survived" Jiro whispered from observation "No one asked" Aizawa walked into the field.
"Maps" Ren answered first.
"Gym Gamma. chair. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. bucket noise. gate local. pain present. contact ended at two. frustration. map present" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Acceptable" Shinso answered next.
"Gym Gamma. collar neutral. throat fine. Quirk activated once. single command. released. anger. no regret. discomfort. map present" Kurose looked at him.
"No regret and discomfort can coexist" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"Yes""Good" The civilian actor who had been Brainwashed raised a hand. Aizawa nodded.
"Actor report""I knew I crossed the line. I heard two verbal stops. After Brainwashing, I lost the step back moment but understood why from his explanation. I felt startled but not tricked" Shinso stared at the floor. Good report. Still hard. Kendo reported next.
"Boundary relay worked when the invasive question happened. Monoma's second question tried to make safety instructions sound like special treatment. Repeating operational focus helped" Monoma bowed.
"I was convincingly unpleasant" Kendo said "Not the victory you think" Aizawa looked at him.
"Hostile proxy report" Monoma's face sobered.
"The public summaries were difficult to attack once repeated by teammates. When Ren answered in operational terms, pressing for private detail made me look obstructive rather than clever. When Shinso named the Quirk use immediately, suspicion had less room to grow" Kurose wrote: NAMING THE REASON REDUCES SHADOW Shinso looked at the line. His mouth tightened.
"Do not make it poetic" Ren said "Too late" Kaminari lifted his hand.
"Can I say something?" Aizawa said "Carefully" Kaminari looked at Shinso.
"You used Brainwashing and it did not become scary because you said what happened" Shinso's eyes narrowed. Kaminari panicked.
"I mean it was still scary because losing a moment is scary but not you scary. Situation scary. Explanation helped. Minimal meaning. No pressure" Shinso stared. Then exhaled.
"Accepted" Kaminari looked like he had survived a boss fight. Bakugo muttered "Barely" Kaminari whispered "Still alive" Aizawa turned to Ren.
"Legibility" Ren looked at Kendo.
"Boundary relay made me answer less" Kendo nodded.
"That was the goal""It helped" She accepted that without making a face. Good. Ren continued "Monoma's special treatment question could happen at exam" Monoma placed one hand to his chest.
"I am honored to be plausible" Kendo said "Do not be" Ren looked at Aizawa.
"Public response needs shorter version" Aizawa nodded.
"Give it" Ren breathed.
"Safety instructions are normal hero work" Kurose wrote. Shinso added "Different Quirk. different protocol. same rescue" Kurose wrote that too. Bakugo clicked his tongue.
"That one is better" Shinso looked at him.
"Yours?" Bakugo scowled.
"Mine is do the job and stop whining" Aizawa said "Not public summary approved""Did not ask" Todoroki raised his hand.
"Could Class 1-A use boundary relay for each other too?" Aizawa looked at him.
"Yes" Todoroki continued "If reporters ask Midoriya about All Might, we can redirect" The room stilled. Midoriya's face went pale. Kurose looked at him.
"Midoriya?" Midoriya swallowed.
"I would want that" Aizawa said "Public summary" Midoriya took a breath.
"My training is my responsibility. All Might's retirement is not a question I answer during operations" The room held the sentence. Toshinori, listening remotely, made a small sound. Not pain. Not exactly. Aizawa nodded.
"Keep" Bakugo looked away. Kirishima raised his hand.
"If someone asks Bakugo about Kamino?" Bakugo's head snapped up.
"Do not" Aizawa looked at him.
"Public summary. Optional" Bakugo's jaw worked. The room waited. No one pushed. He looked at the floor.
"Not your damn question" Kurose said "Too hostile for most contexts. Good boundary shape" Bakugo glared. She looked back. He exhaled through his nose.
"Kamino is not an operational question" Aizawa nodded.
"Keep" Kirishima looked proud. Bakugo saw.
"Face" Kirishima turned away.
"No face""You are all face" The second run added more noise. Not more danger. More questions. Hatsume was allowed to activate a sound system that layered crowd murmur, distant siren, and one recorded voice asking "Are they really U. A. students?" every thirty seconds. Recovery Girl immediately threatened the speaker if it raised Ren's heart rate beyond threshold. Hatsume saluted and called the speaker an ethically limited noise baby before correcting to invention so fast Kurose almost smiled.
This run assigned: Shinso — primary responderRen — stabilization and summaryKendo — boundary relayIida — route leadTetsutetsu — support braceKaminari — civilian with fear of BrainwashingMonoma — rumor candidate proxyMina — bucket actor, because she had asked and everyone regretted saying yes Mina received the bucket with reverence. Bakugo said "This is why we lose respect" Mina whispered "Bucket deserves respect" The siren started. The crowd murmur filled the gym. The recorded voice asked "Are they really U. A.
students?" Ren's wrist patch pulsed at the layered sound but did not trigger gate. Good. Map present. Shinso stepped toward Kaminari. Kaminari, in civilian role, backed away.
"Do not brainwash me!" The words hit harder than the acting deserved. Shinso's face closed. Then opened by force.
"No power. Words are safer. You can point instead of answering if speaking feels unsafe" Kaminari blinked. In role, he pointed toward the fallen shelf. Shinso said "Good. You are communicating without entering protocol" Kendo repeated to Iida.
"Civilian prefers nonverbal response. responder using words only. no Quirk" Iida nodded.
"Route lead acknowledges. nonverbal communication accepted" Ren moved toward the shelf. Monoma entered from the right.
"How reassuring. A Brainwashing user promising not to use his Quirk. Shall we all simply trust that because U. A. says so?" Shinso did not look at him.
"Public summary. My collar is in neutral. no protocol indicator. no active prompt. no Quirk use. Ask route questions" Hatsume made a tiny sound from the support bench that might have been pride being strangled. Kurose wrote. GEAR CAN SUPPORT PUBLIC SUMMARY Monoma tried again.
"And the stabilizer? Will he stop mid-rescue if things become inconvenient?" Ren looked at the shelf. Then at Monoma.
"If I stop, it is to prevent becoming a second casualty. Teammate takes support. Rescue continues" Tetsutetsu stepped forward.
"I take support when assigned" Kendo added "Stop is part of plan, not abandonment" Ren's throat tightened. Boundary relay. Not answering for him. Carrying the operational truth forward. Good. He touched the support point. Pain. Gate. Stop. Graft Lattice low.
"Contact active. shelf stable. Tetsutetsu ready" The bucket slammed. Mina shouted "My bucket knows the cat!" Aizawa closed his eyes.
"Stay in role""I am!" Iida's voice cut through.
"Route left confirmed. center route crowd blocked. Tetsutetsu prepare support transfer on Ren's stop" Ren reached two seconds. Maximum three. The shelf stable. Tetsutetsu ready. Iida clear. One more second would make the transfer cleaner. Proof. No.
"Stop. support transfer" Tetsutetsu moved in.
"Taking support" Ren released. Tetsutetsu held. Uraraka was not in this run, so Iida directed the dummy movement with Kendo and Shinso guiding the nonverbal civilian back. Kaminari pointed instead of answering Shinso's prompt. Good. No Quirk. The recorded voice asked "Are they really U. A. students?" Bakugo, from observation, snapped "Yes, damn it" Aizawa looked at him. Bakugo scowled.
"What? It was operational" Kurose wrote nothing. That was mercy. The scenario ended in partial extraction and full containment of panic markers. Better. Louder. Harder. No one gave private truth away. No one answered Monoma's rumor bait with explanation. Shinso used no Quirk in the second run. Ren stopped at two again. Tetsutetsu took support cleanly. Mina surrendered the bucket after Aizawa threatened to assign it homework. The debrief board filled.
OPERATIONAL QUESTIONS ONLYSAFETY INSTRUCTIONS ARE NORMAL HERO WORKDIFFERENT QUIRK. DIFFERENT PROTOCOL. SAME RESCUEUSE MUST BE LEGIBLE TOOGEAR CAN SUPPORT PUBLIC SUMMARYSTOP IS PART OF PLAN, NOT ABANDONMENTNOISE DOES NOT EARN KEYS Kaminari pointed at the last line.
"That is the chapter title of today" Jiro said "Do not say chapter title""What else is it?"
"A sentence" Ren looked at the last line. Noise does not earn keys. His wrist stayed quiet. Good. Shinso looked at his own hands. Noise did not earn keys. Fear did not either. Curiosity did not. Rumor did not. The exam would have noise. Other schools would have rumors. Civilians would have fear. Reporters would have hunger disguised as questions. None of that earned keys. Only operational truth got handles. Enough without everything. After training, Ren returned to his room and found a new note on his desk.
It was from Kendo. No decoration. No extra meaning. Just a folded paper with three lines. Boundary relay works best when the person keeps ownership of the boundary. We can carry the sentence. We do not own the door. Ren read it twice. Then placed it beside his public summary. Hana read it after he nodded.
"That is good" Daichi read it too.
"Very good" Recovery Girl looked from the doorway.
"Do not start a paper shrine" Ren gathered both papers into a folder.
"Operational folder""Better" In Shinso's room, Kaminari left nothing. Good. Instead, at dinner, he pointed at the pudding tray and said "General pudding. no assigned meaning. also I will not ask about the Quirk thing unless you bring it up" Shinso stared.
"That sentence had too much furniture" Kaminari winced.
"Correction. General pudding. no Quirk questions""Better" Kaminari took a pudding first. Then Shinso took one. Bakugo watched from across the table.
"Words worked" Shinso looked at him.
"Again?" Bakugo shrugged violently.
"They did" Shinso looked at the pudding.
"Yes" Bakugo stood.
"Do not make it a thing" Kirishima whispered "It is already a small thing" Bakugo pointed without turning.
"I heard that" Jiro sighed.
"His hearing is a hazard" That night, Ren added a line to his board. NOISE DOES NOT EARN KEYS Then another below it. WE CAN CARRY THE SENTENCE WITHOUT OWNING THE DOOR He stared at the second one. Kendo's words. Good. Worth keeping. Across the wing, Shinso added one line. IF I USE POWER, I NAME THE REASON Then, after a pause, he added another. IF WORDS WORK, I LET THEM He looked at both. Used. Withheld. Both active. Both legible. Both his choice. Before sleep, he opened his door. Checked the hallway.
Closed it again. In Ren's room, the door opened too. Closed too. The dorms settled into night. The bucket had been returned to storage under supervision. The public summaries had survived noise. The boundaries had survived curiosity. And somewhere in the quiet after the drill, U. A. became a little less dependent on knowing everything before doing the right thing. That mattered. Because the world would not always ask kindly. It would ask loudly. It would ask badly.
It would ask while walls tilted, sirens screamed, civilians panicked, other candidates judged, and a score waited for legible heroism. Ren and Shinso could not stop the questions from existing. They could learn which ones deserved handles. They could learn which ones never earned keys.
