Chương 155: Conditional Does Not Mean Lesser

The debrief did not happen in Gym Gamma. That was the first warning. The second warning was that there were chairs arranged in a circle instead of desks. The third warning was Nezu. Kaminari stopped in the doorway of Conference Room 3 and whispered "Absolutely not" Jiro stepped around him.
"You have to enter rooms eventually""Not rooms with circles" Sero looked over Kaminari's shoulder.
"Circle means feelings" Kaminari nodded gravely.
"Exactly" Aizawa stood inside the room with his arms crossed.
"Enter" Kaminari entered. Not bravely. Functionally. Class 1-A filed in after him, slower than usual. There were no target vests waiting. No training balls. No foam rubble. No civilian actors. No buckets. Just chairs, water, folders, a projector screen, and a long whiteboard covered with only one line. A DECISION IS NOT A FINISH LINE Mina looked at it.
"Can the board stop being right before breakfast?" Aizawa said "It is after breakfast""That does not help emotionally" Kurose stood near the whiteboard with a marker and a stack of papers. Recovery Girl sat beside the medical display table, cane across her knees. Power Loader had a folder. Mizushima from H. U. C. was present with her clipboard. Vlad King leaned against the back wall. Nezu sat on the central chair with a cup of tea that somehow made the whole room feel like a courtroom designed by a polite predator.
Ren entered last with Hana and Daichi behind him. His chair moved slowly, not because it had to, but because the morning corridor had been crowded and he had chosen low speed instead of proving the chair could do more. The Boundary Return Monitor module rested on the left control side, off for now. His wrist patch was quiet. His blanket was folded neatly across his lap. Shinso came in from the opposite side, hands in pockets, collar neutral, scarf folded over one arm. He did not look at the circle of chairs.
He looked at the exits. Then at Ren. Ren looked at the exits too. Two. Clear. Good. Aizawa pointed to the seats.
"Sit where you can stay" That was better than assigned seating. Still terrible. Ren chose a place near the left side, angled toward the board and the door. Hana sat behind and slightly to the side, close enough to be there, not close enough to become explanation. Daichi sat beside her with a notebook he had not opened. Shinso chose an edge chair with a clear view of both exits. Kurose noticed and did not comment. Class 1-A spread around the circle. Bakugo refused the center. No one had expected otherwise.
Aizawa waited until everyone settled. Then he looked at the board.
"Today is not training" Kaminari whispered "I distrust that" Aizawa continued "Today is debrief and participation review. You completed the second mock with improved markers in both stages. That does not mean you are ready. It means the staff has enough data to decide whether continued preparation toward September 2 remains appropriate" The date landed. September 2. Closer now. Not a story. A calendar. Nezu lifted his cup.
"Four days" No one breathed quite right. Four days. Mina's fingers curled around her sleeve. Midoriya's notebook stayed closed by force. Bakugo looked at the floor like the date had insulted him. Ren's wrist patch pulsed once. Gate? No. Stress. He pressed two fingers to it. Map. Conference Room 3. circle. board. four days. Aizawa. Kurose. Recovery Girl. Nezu. Mizushima. Class 1-A. Shinso. Hana. Daichi. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. pressure. no gate. map present. Recovery Girl looked at him.
"Good" Aizawa turned to the class.
"Before individual review, group debrief. Stage one. improved. why?" Yaoyorozu answered first.
"We adapted previous corrections instead of repeating them mechanically" Aizawa nodded.
"Example" She sat straighter.
"When Class 1-B retreated instead of hunting immediately, we did not keep defensive shape as a script. We advanced with lanes and maintained support" Kurose wrote: ADAPTATION WITHOUT ROLE LOSS Iida followed.
"Route verification held even under changed pressure. I corrected aloud when field information changed" Jiro said "Sound relay was used for positions, not emotional translation" Kaminari raised his hand slightly.
"I scored without panicking dramatically" Jiro looked at him.
"Less dramatically""Less dramatically" he corrected Aizawa nodded.
"Better" Bakugo spoke without raising his hand.
"Monoma stayed quiet. We stopped waiting for him to be bait out loud" Monoma, who was not present but somehow still felt accused, remained absent. Vlad King looked amused anyway. Aizawa looked at Bakugo.
"And?" Bakugo's jaw tightened.
"If someone changes their trick, the fix changes too" Kurose wrote: IF THE TRICK CHANGES, THE FIX CHANGES Todoroki read it.
"That is concise" Bakugo pointed at him.
"Do not adopt it" Todoroki looked confused.
"It is not a cat" Sero muttered "Could be" Aizawa's scarf twitched. The room stopped. Aizawa moved on.
"Stage two. improved. why?" Uraraka answered.
"We did not treat previous labels as permanent. The loud barrier was not first at first. Then it became urgent. We updated priority" Asui said "Quiet medication was not less urgent because it was quiet" Midoriya said "Competing candidate status became part of triage instead of an obstruction" Kirishima added "Loud can become first. But not because loud. because condition changed" Mizushima nodded.
"Good" Shinso spoke from the edge.
"Overtrust was a different risk than refusal" The room shifted toward him. He did not look away.
"I almost treated civilian trust as permission. It was not" Kurose wrote: TRUST IS NOT CONSENT Ren added quietly "Being chosen was information, not proof" Kurose wrote that too. BEING CHOSEN IS INFORMATION. NOT PROOF. Hana's eyes went wet. Daichi looked at his unopened notebook. Aizawa let the line sit. Then he turned to Mizushima.
"H. U. C. assessment" Mizushima stood. She did not smile this time.
"Your group remains inconsistent in polish but improved in recoverability. That matters more than polish at this stage. In the first mock, the group became passable because correct behaviors existed. In the second mock, those behaviors changed shape when conditions changed. That is the first sign of readiness, not the end of readiness" Kaminari whispered "First sign feels better than passable" Jiro whispered "Do not hug the sign" Mizushima continued "The major remaining risks are predictable.
First, old habits return under fatigue. Second, students still attach identity to specific corrections. Third, the group may overprotect conditional candidates if they perceive them as targeted. Fourth, students may confuse improved with safe" She looked at Ren and Shinso only on the fourth point. Not cruelly. Precisely.
"Improved is not safe" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Keep that" Kurose wrote: IMPROVED IS NOT SAFE Ren felt the line land in his ribs. Not pain. Not exactly. Truth near old bruises. Aizawa looked at the class.
"Say it" Kaminari's face fell. Everyone said it anyway.
"Improved is not safe" Bakugo said it like he wanted to fight the sentence. Midoriya said it like he wanted to apologize to it. Ren said it quietly. Shinso said it flatly. Recovery Girl looked satisfied. Nezu set his cup down.
"Now the participation review" Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon. The room tightened. There it was. Aizawa opened a folder.
"Provisional Track candidates. Hitoshi Shinso and Ren Akiyama. Conditional registration was approved for preparation. Today, staff determines whether they remain active candidates for the September 2 exam, shift to observation status, or withdraw from this exam cycle" Silence. Not empty. Full. Shinso's jaw set. Ren's fingers pressed lightly into the blanket. Hana did not reach for him. Daichi did not either. Good. No one made the choice smaller by touching it before it had a shape. Aizawa looked at Shinso first.
"Shinso. Summary of current performance" Kurose handed him a sheet. He did not take it.
"I can summarize" Aizawa nodded.
"Do it" Shinso sat forward slightly.
"Responder role holds under refusal, overtrust, and route pressure. Brainwashing use has been limited, named, released, and followed by civilian confirmation. Non-Quirk scoring exists through scarf, movement, micro-reactions, and teammate communication. Weaknesses. throat strain under repeated calls. tendency to look for staff validation after control. freeze risk when trust becomes too direct. risk of being treated by others as control solution" Mizushima wrote. Aizawa nodded.
"Conditions you propose for participation" Shinso breathed.
"Collar neutral by default. release reminder enabled during rescue phase and optional during first stage if Quirk use becomes likely. no voice modulation. no stolen voices. no surprise voice use. Brainwashing only under active candidate exchange or immediate safety threshold. person confirmation before staff map. If voice strain rises past agreed marker, switch to hand signals and Jiro or assigned relay. If I become the team's default control answer, I call role break" Kurose's marker paused.
Then wrote: IF I BECOME THE DEFAULT CONTROL ANSWER, I CALL ROLE BREAK Aizawa looked at Recovery Girl.
"Medical?"
"Throat strain manageable with limits. Psychological discomfort present but mapped. Release reminder appears helpful, annoying, and not coercive. That is acceptable" Shinso muttered "Helpful, annoying, and not coercive is my entire week" Kaminari whispered "That could be on a shirt" Jiro kicked his shoe. Nezu looked at Shinso.
"Do you wish to remain an active candidate?" The room went still again. Shinso looked at the board. No is not failure. Refusal changes the plan, not the person. Last does not mean abandoned. Trust is not consent. If I become the default control answer, I call role break. He looked at Aizawa.
"Yes" Nezu waited. Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Yes, with conditions. If conditions fail, I withdraw from the stage, not from being a student" Kurose wrote that without asking. WITHDRAW FROM THE STAGE. NOT FROM BEING A STUDENT. Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" Not final yet. But accepted. Then Aizawa turned to Ren. Ren's body wanted to become paper. Flat. Readable. Filed. No. Map. Conference Room 3. chair. all eyes. Hana. Daichi. Shinso. board. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. pulse. gate local? no. pressure. map present. Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened.
"Map remains" Ren nodded once. Aizawa said "Ren. Summary of current performance" Ren swallowed.
"Stabilizer role holds under short contact, refusal, selective consent, targeted pressure, and priority changes. Direct scoring exists through chair movement, rebound angles, misread, and teammate windows. Boundary role after exit held twice with monitor support. Emergency brace used once per run when approved and followed by exit. Weaknesses. proof temptation under contact. desire to re-enter after exit. delayed civilian instruction when focused on brace transfer. fatigue accumulation.
risk of team becoming wall around me" Kurose wrote: RISK OF TEAM BECOMING WALL AROUND ME Kirishima looked down. Bakugo clicked his tongue.
"Already fixing" Ren glanced at him.
"Yes" Aizawa said "Conditions you propose" Ren looked at Recovery Girl first. Then at Aizawa. Then at his parents. Not for permission. For reality. Then he spoke.
"Boundary Return Monitor available. choice before each stage. Stage one. chair mobility only unless structural hazard enters rescue-style emergency, which should not happen in first stage. no Graft Lattice brace for scoring. contact none. If I lose two targets, I remain active only if map stable. If I lose third or map degrades, eliminated status accepted without compensation behavior" Kurose's marker moved fast. Ren continued "Stage two. contact maximum two seconds.
one emergency brace only if immediate collapse or direct civilian hazard and if no safer support can reach. after emergency brace, active field exit unless staff clears boundary monitoring. outcome to civilian first if safe. map to staff after. if exit role is declared, no re-entry unless emergency threshold and verbal override. If team becomes wall, I call role break" Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"Add proof" Ren breathed.
"If proof appears, I say proof and stop or reduce role" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Add pain absence" Ren's fingers curled.
"If pain disappears globally or body map blurs, immediate withdrawal""Good" Kurose wrote: IF PROOF APPEARS, I SAY PROOF Then: MAP BLUR MEANS WITHDRAWAL Mizushima looked at Ren.
"Do you understand that these conditions may cost you the exam?" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes""And?"
"Passing by breaking conditions would not prove readiness" Aizawa nodded once. Small. But visible. Nezu looked at Ren.
"Do you wish to remain an active candidate?" Hana's hands were folded so tightly her knuckles paled. Daichi's notebook stayed closed. Ren looked at the board. A decision is not a finish line. Conditional does not mean lesser. The line was not there yet. But it arrived anyway. He answered.
"Yes, with conditions. If conditions fail, I withdraw from the stage, not from being a student" Shinso looked at him. Same sentence. Different wound. Same handle. Kurose wrote it again. WITHDRAW FROM THE STAGE. NOT FROM BEING A STUDENT. Nezu folded his paws.
"Staff recommendation" Aizawa spoke first.
"Remain active candidates. Conditions mandatory. No heroic interpretation. No teacher discretion to encourage beyond limits during exam simulation or actual exam" Recovery Girl said "Remain active with medical veto. Veto immediate and final. I do not care about score" Kurose said "Remain active as students, not symbols. Language must stay clean. No reward framing. No compensation framing. No tragedy-to-opportunity framing" Mizushima said "From H. U. C.
perspective, both candidates demonstrate enough role clarity and adaptive conduct to attempt the exam under their conditions. They are not ready without conditions. They may be ready with them" Power Loader said "Support gear is stable for optional use. No untested features before exam" Hatsume made a dying sound behind her clipboard. Power Loader added "No untested features" Hatsume whispered "I heard the tragedy" Vlad King said "Class integration has improved. Class 1-A must keep role discipline around them.
The risk is less the candidates and more the group's response to the candidates being pressured" Bakugo said "We heard" Vlad King looked at him.
"Then keep hearing when the field gets loud" Bakugo's mouth shut. Good. Nezu looked around the room.
"Decision" No one moved. Nezu smiled gently. That made it worse.
"Ren Akiyama and Hitoshi Shinso remain active conditional candidates for the September 2 Provisional Hero License Exam" Silence. The words did not explode. They settled. That was better. Nezu continued "Their participation is not a reward for surviving harm. It is not compensation for being targeted. It is not proof that the harm was useful. It is a training decision based on observed conduct, stated limits, and the ability to withdraw without losing student status" Kurose wrote the line that mattered.
CONDITIONAL DOES NOT MEAN LESSER Then under it: CONDITIONAL MEANS THE LIMITS ARE VISIBLE Kaminari exhaled.
"That one is kind" Jiro whispered "Careful""I said it quietly" Shinso stared at the board. Conditional does not mean lesser. He looked like he wanted to reject the sentence because wanting it would make it dangerous. Ren looked at the same line. Conditional means the limits are visible. Visible limits. Not lesser. Not special prize. Not fragile object. Not weapon. Candidate. With edges. Aizawa turned to Class 1-A.
"Now your decision" The room shifted again. Mina blinked.
"Our decision?"
"Yes. You are not deciding whether they are allowed. Staff decided that. You decide whether you can accept their conditions as field reality without making them emotional theater" Kaminari whispered "That sentence has knives" Aizawa said "It should" Kurose wrote a new heading. CLASS COMMITMENT Aizawa said "One sentence. No speeches. What condition will you uphold?" Yaoyorozu started.
"I will distribute calls so Ren and Shinso do not become hidden command centers" Iida said "I will verify routes before amplifying and will not override withdrawal conditions for motion" Uraraka said "I will give waiting information without making their withdrawal feel like abandonment" Asui said "I will watch quiet changes and not force them to become loud to matter" Jiro said "I will relay facts and support Shinso's silence when silence is role" Kaminari said "I will not make every loud civilian Shinso's problem or every scary structure Ren's problem" Mina said "I will not turn their limits into room mood" Sero said "I will make routes, not emotional nets" Kirishima looked at Ren.
Then at Shinso. Then at the board.
"I will not become wall unless assigned. If I start becoming wall, I will say role break" Bakugo spoke next.
"If they stop, the field keeps moving" The room went still. That was the sentence. Crude. Correct. Merciful in his dialect. Kurose wrote it. IF THEY STOP, THE FIELD KEEPS MOVING Ren felt something loosen in his chest. Not relief. Not exactly. Permission not to be the scene. Shinso looked at Bakugo. Bakugo looked away.
"Do not make it a thing" Shinso said "Too late""Die" Aizawa's scarf lifted. Bakugo corrected without looking.
"Do not die. Obviously" Kaminari whispered "Character growth with violence residue" Jiro whispered "Private""Private" Todoroki spoke last.
"If a condition changes, I will ask what changed before deciding what should happen next" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Nezu sipped his tea.
"Then we proceed" Proceed. Not celebrate. Proceed. Good. The meeting did not end there. Because adults enjoyed layers. Kurose handed Ren and Shinso a printed document titled: ACTIVE CONDITIONAL CANDIDATE AGREEMENT She had clearly fought for the title. Shinso looked at it.
"Not provisional asset?" Kurose's smile was thin.
"Someone tried" Aizawa said "Someone lost" Nezu's smile became more charming. No one asked. Ren read the first page. Name. Role. Permitted stage participation. Conditions. Withdrawal rules. Medical veto. Support gear choice. Student status protection. No punitive consequences for withdrawal. No language framing participation as reward, redemption, compensation, or proof. No expectation of post-exam disclosure beyond student-approved public summary. Ren stared at the last two lines. No reward. No redemption.
No proof. No disclosure. Good. Shinso read the same section and breathed through his nose.
"Can I add one?" Kurose handed him a pen immediately. He wrote under student conditions: No one says I failed if I choose not to use Brainwashing and the team loses a possible point because of it. Kurose read it. Then nodded.
"Accepted pending staff sign" Aizawa said "Accepted" Shinso looked like he had expected a fight and was annoyed by immediate competence. Ren looked at his own document. The pen felt heavier than it should. He wrote: No one calls withdrawal medical failure if withdrawal happens before collapse. Recovery Girl said "Accepted" He added: No one says the grafts helped me earn the exam. The room went silent. Kurose's expression sharpened.
"Accepted" Nezu said softly "Accepted" Recovery Girl's cane tapped once.
"Accepted" Hana closed her eyes. Daichi looked at the ceiling. Ren continued before the silence became too large. No one asks me after the exam whether it was worth what happened. Aizawa's face did not change. But his voice was lower.
"Accepted" Kurose wrote on a separate copy. Accepted. Shinso looked at Ren. Then added one more line to his own page. No one calls Brainwashing safer just because it was useful. Kurose nodded.
"Accepted" Mizushima's pen stopped moving for once. Good. Some sentences deserved not to become evaluation. They signed. Not ceremonially. Practically. Ren signed first. His hand shook once. Not enough to stop. Shinso signed after him. His name looked sharper than usual. Kurose signed as homeroom witness for Shinso. Aizawa signed as training supervisor. Recovery Girl signed medical veto. Nezu signed principal authorization. Hana and Daichi did not sign because this was not parental permission. That mattered.
They were there. They were not the key. After the documents were collected, Aizawa erased the board except for two lines. CONDITIONAL DOES NOT MEAN LESSERIF THEY STOP, THE FIELD KEEPS MOVING He looked at the class.
"Remember both" Kaminari whispered "I will" No one kicked him. The meeting ended with food because Recovery Girl had infiltrated every serious decision with calories. No one called it a celebration. Kurose explicitly banned the word. Mina almost called it a not-celebration and was allowed to live because she said it only with her eyebrows. The common room later felt strange. Not happy. Not heavy. Held. Ren came for six minutes and twenty-one seconds. Different ugly. Chosen ugly. Bakugo noticed.
"Six twenty-one" Ren nodded.
"Document cost""Good" Shinso sat at the edge with barley tea and the collar beside him instead of on him. Kaminari looked at the collar. Then at Shinso. Then at his own rice. Private. Good. Shinso said "You are learning" Kaminari brightened.
"Publicly?"
"No" He dimmed.
"Privately""Acceptable" Todoroki offered tea.
"Available. conditional" Bakugo's head snapped toward him.
"No" Todoroki paused.
"Tea can have conditions""No""It can be too hot" Bakugo opened his mouth. Stopped. Looked angry that Todoroki had made sense. Jiro whispered "Tea won" Sero whispered "Again" At the far side of the common room, Hana placed a container of broth on the table. Not in front of Shinso. Not in front of Ren. In the middle.
"Available. no meaning required" Shinso looked at it. Then at Hana.
"Yes to broth. meaning still pending" Hana smiled.
"Accepted" Daichi placed a small folded note beside the bowl. Bentaro respects conditional participation. Shinso stared at it. Ren read it. Bakugo glanced over.
"The umbrella has opinions?" Daichi said "Many" Bakugo looked at Ren.
"Your family is weird" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Shinso took broth. No one made it adoption. No one made it rescue. Good. That night, Ren added three lines to his board. CONDITIONAL DOES NOT MEAN LESSER CONDITIONAL MEANS THE LIMITS ARE VISIBLE NO ONE CALLS WITHDRAWAL MEDICAL FAILURE IF WITHDRAWAL HAPPENS BEFORE COLLAPSE He stared at the last line longest. Before collapse. Not after. Not almost. Before. A success that looked like stopping. Across the wing, Shinso added: WITHDRAW FROM THE STAGE. NOT FROM BEING A STUDENT.
NO ONE CALLS BRAINWASHING SAFER JUST BECAUSE IT WAS USEFUL. IF I BECOME THE DEFAULT CONTROL ANSWER, I CALL ROLE BREAK. He stared at the first line until the letters blurred. Not tears. Fatigue. Probably. The common board gained one more line under the date before lights out. FOUR DAYSVISIBLE LIMITSFIELD KEEPS MOVING No one knew who wrote it. Aizawa saw it during final hallway check. He did not erase it. The date waited. September 2. Four days. Ren and Shinso were active conditional candidates now.
Not ready without conditions. Maybe ready with them. Maybe not. The decision had not made the door closer. It had made the handle visible. And for once, visible did not mean exposed. It meant everyone knew where not to pull.
