The next board was almost insulting in its size. SMALLEST NEXT FIX Under it, Aizawa had written: DO IT ONCETHEN DO IT AGAINTHEN DO IT TIREDTHEN STOP Kaminari stared at the board.
"No" Aizawa looked at him.
"That was not a question""It was a spiritual refusal""Denied" Kaminari placed one hand over his heart.
"My spirit has been overruled" Jiro said "Your spirit files poor paperwork" Sero nodded.
"Passable spirit. not ready" Kaminari pointed at him.
"You have been waiting to use that" Sero smiled.
"Durability is repetition" Mina turned to Aizawa.
"Are we allowed to hate the board and still learn from it?" Kurose, standing beside the board, said "That is most of education" Todoroki looked thoughtful.
"Then resentment can be instructional" Bakugo turned toward him.
"Stop helping the board""It did not ask for help""That has never stopped you from adding tea to things" Todoroki considered.
"Tea helps by existing" Bakugo looked at the ceiling.
"I hate this dorm" Aizawa tapped the board before the room could become philosophy.
"Today is targeted fixes. Yesterday you identified the smallest next fix. Today you test whether it survives a second repetition. Not maximum. Not full mock. Not dramatic correction. Small fix. repeated cleanly" The gym had been divided into four stations. Station one: status before action. Station two: exit role and re-entry boundary. Station three: civilian confirmation after control. Station four: waiting information under priority pressure. No full-field chaos. No long scenario. No one was happy. That was good.
Ren sat at the Provisional Track edge with the new chair monitor module attached but inactive. The small switch sat near his left hand, close enough to choose, not close enough to command him. Hatsume had wanted to call it the Deliberate Return Baby. Kurose had threatened to rename it Evidence Exhibit A. The device was now officially listed as Boundary Return Monitor, which everyone except Iida found too long. Shinso stood beside him with the updated collar on.
The release reminder function was installed but disabled. He had said he would test it today. He had not said when. Recovery Girl sat at the medical station. Hatsume sat behind the support tape line with both hands clamped around a clipboard as if physically restraining invention. Power Loader stood behind her. Kurose held the station sheets. Aizawa looked at the class.
"Everyone gets two runs at their smallest fix. If the first run succeeds, the second is not a reward. It is the test. If the second succeeds, you stop. Success does not buy another rep" The class groaned. Aizawa waited. The groan died.
"Good. Station one" Station one belonged to Bakugo first. Status before threat. The setup was painfully simple. A competing candidate actor blocked a narrow route with a foam panel. Behind the panel, a civilian actor was half-visible. Bakugo's job was to get status before treating the blocker as an obstacle. The candidate actor was Monoma. Bakugo looked at Aizawa.
"You did this on purpose" Aizawa said "Yes" Monoma placed one hand over his chest.
"I am honored to be trusted as a precision irritant" Kendo said from the observation line "Limited irritant" Monoma bowed.
"Elegantly limited" Bakugo walked to the start line. Aizawa said "Fix" Bakugo looked like he was chewing glass.
"Ask status before threat""Begin" Monoma stepped into the route with a clipboard and a smile.
"This route is occupied by superior judgment" Bakugo's palms sparked. Aizawa said nothing. Bakugo's shoulders loaded. Then stopped.
"Civilian status?" Monoma blinked. The pause was real enough that Kendo smiled.
"Airway clear. leg trapped. stable. moving panel wrong drops side support" Bakugo's eyes snapped to the panel.
"Then say that first, idiot" Aizawa called "Pause" Bakugo turned.
"What? I asked""You added idiot""It was educational" Kurose wrote partial on his sheet. Bakugo looked betrayed. Aizawa said "Second attempt later. Not immediate. You do not get to brute-force correction while angry" Bakugo looked ready to argue. Then remembered the board. Do it once. Then do it again. Then do it tired. Then stop. He stepped back.
"Fine" Kirishima whispered "That was already growth" Bakugo pointed without looking.
"Your face is loud" Kirishima covered his face. Station one continued with Midoriya. Status before self-sacrifice. His actor was a silent injured civilian behind a blocked route and a visible child crying near the entrance. The child reached toward him. Midoriya's body moved. He stopped it. His hands shook.
"Status compare. child breathing and mobile. silent civilian unknown. checking silent first. Uraraka, stay with child and explain" Uraraka moved in.
"I am with the child. Go" Midoriya checked the silent civilian. Airway clear. Breathing shallow.
"Silent priority. Need route support. Child waiting with Uraraka. not abandoned" Aizawa said "Pause" Midoriya looked up.
"Good. What did it cost?" Midoriya swallowed.
"Everything in me wanted to go to the child first because the child reached" Mizushima nodded.
"Good data. Second run later" Midoriya nodded. No notebook. Good. Station two waited like a trap made of tape. EXIT ROLE AND RE-ENTRY BOUNDARY Ren rolled toward it with the monitor module still inactive. The field setup was almost the same as yesterday. One sign. one civilian dummy. one brace support. one exit line. one boundary position. Except today, there were two new elements. A second hazard sound after exit. And the monitor switch. Hatsume visibly vibrated.
Power Loader said "Quietly" She whispered "I am being quiet in my bones" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Fix" Ren answered "Declare boundary role before entry. use monitor mode when chosen. do not re-enter unless emergency threshold and verbal override" Recovery Girl added "No emergency brace in first run" Ren nodded.
"No emergency brace in first run" Aizawa looked at him.
"Your choice on monitor mode" Ren looked at the switch. The chair did not trap him. The chair did not know better. The chair could ask. Returning deliberate. He pressed the switch. A soft pulse moved through the chair arm. No sound. No light. A small indicator appeared on his private control display. BOUNDARY RETURN MONITOR READY Hatsume made a sound like compressed fireworks. Kurose lifted one finger. Hatsume swallowed the fireworks. Ren breathed.
"Entry role. stabilize sign for brace transfer. exit role. angle monitor only. no re-entry unless emergency threshold and verbal override" Aizawa said "Begin" Ren moved in. Contact. Pain. Gate flicker.
"Stop" Gate narrowed.
"Contact active. sign stable. Tetsutetsu brace ready" Tetsutetsu took support.
"Taking brace!" Ren released.
"Outcome. sign held by Tetsutetsu. dummy not under falling support. map. gate local. pain present" A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. He backed across the EXIT line. Monitor mode activated with one private pulse. The chair's acceleration softened. Not locked. Questioning. Boundary. Aizawa triggered the sign shift. Tetsutetsu adjusted wrong. Ren's hand moved forward. The chair pulsed twice. Not alarm. Question. He stopped.
"Angle monitor. lower left support two centimeters" Tetsutetsu adjusted. The sign stabilized. Then the second hazard sound played. The dummy's arm slipped again. Ren's hand moved. The chair pulsed. His body hated the pause.
"Boundary role. no civilian contact. request field rescuer" Kendo moved in.
"Taking civilian check" The run ended. Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Map""Gym Gamma. boundary. monitor mode active. wanted re-entry twice. stopped twice. left wrist quiet. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. frustration. map present" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good" Hatsume whispered "It asked" Ren looked at the switch.
"Yes" Aizawa said "Second run later. Stop now" Ren nodded. Stopping after success tasted like unfinished work. Good. That was the work. Station three belonged to Shinso. CIVILIAN CONFIRMATION AFTER CONTROL The updated collar rested at his throat with release reminder disabled. Aizawa looked at him.
"Fix" Shinso said "Person first. staff second. release reminder test by choice" Kurose said "Choice now?" Shinso looked at the collar. If he tested it later, later would become proof. If he tested it now, it would become part of the work. He hated both.
"Enable for one run" Hatsume's eyes widened. Power Loader put one hand on her shoulder before she could combust. Shinso tapped the collar twice. A small private pulse answered. Release reminder ready. No public signal. Good. The actor was the same H. U. C. teen. Yellow line. red line. green tape. Aizawa said "Begin at threshold" The teen crossed red. Shinso spoke.
"Immediate safety. stop moving" The actor answered "No!" Brainwashing took.
"Step back behind green tape" They stepped back.
"Release" One private pulse. Then three. Reminder. Not because he forgot. Because the device asked whether the end had been completed. He kept his eyes on the civilian.
"You are behind green tape. You crossed a red hazard line after warning. I used one movement command to move you back. You are released now. You do not have to answer me. Jiro is available if you want another contact" The actor nodded once. Only then did Shinso turn.
"Map. Quirk used once. one movement command. released. civilian oriented behind green tape. reminder pulse helpful and irritating. throat fine. discomfort moderate. map present" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Mizushima looked at the teen actor.
"Report""Clear. He did not look away too soon" Shinso's jaw tightened. That sentence mattered more than it should. Aizawa said "Second run later. Disable or keep?" Shinso touched the collar.
"Keep" Hatsume whispered into her clipboard.
"I am very normal about this" Power Loader whispered back "No you are not" Station four was waiting information under priority pressure. It was Class 1-A's least favorite station because it sounded simple and kept hurting them. The setup had two civilians. One urgent but stable. One less loud but deteriorating. The rescuer had to tell the first person they were waiting without making it sound like a demotion. Uraraka went first. Her actor was a crying child with a scraped knee.
Behind them, a silent adult's breathing became shallow. Uraraka crouched.
"You are waiting because that adult's breathing is getting worse. You still matter. I am staying close enough to see you. Mina will sit with you while I check breathing" Mina moved in.
"Staying close. no crowding" The child actor nodded. Mizushima paused.
"Good. Second later" Uraraka looked like she hated the later more than the correction. Good. Iida practiced with an angry adult.
"You are waiting because the route behind you may drop debris. Waiting prevents more injury. I will update you after the brace check" Mizushima made him repeat it with fewer words. Then again with less command in his shoulders. Kaminari practiced with a loud medication actor.
"The bag matters. Your breathing is stable. I am assigning bag retrieval and checking quiet injury first. I will tell you when the bag is found" His voice only rose slightly. Jiro gave him a thumbs-up so small it counted as not making pressure. Todoroki practiced with someone afraid of fire.
"I am not using fire near you. You are waiting because the barrier must be supported first. Next tool is hand support and route marking" The actor nodded. Mizushima wrote. Good. Not ready. The phrase was becoming less terrible. By midday, the first repetitions were done. No one had done enough to feel satisfied. That was the point. Aizawa made them eat. Recovery Girl enforced it. This, too, had become structure. Lunch was in the common room.
Ren attended from a boundary seat near the door, monitor mode off, tray balanced on the small side table. His in-room nap had not happened yet because the schedule placed it after lunch. Recovery Girl had made him state that aloud so he could not pretend eating near others counted as rest. Shinso sat at the edge table with barley tea, collar still wearing the release reminder setting. He had not disabled it. He had not said why. Kaminari leaned toward him.
"Can I ask an operational question?" Shinso looked at him.
"Maybe""Does the pulse feel like staff watching?" Shinso considered.
"No. It feels like gear asking if I finished what I said I would finish" Kaminari nodded.
"That sounds better""It is still annoying""Most helpful things here are" Jiro whispered "He has learned" Shinso looked at her.
"Unfortunately" Ren looked at his chair control. Bakugo noticed.
"Monitor thing weird?" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Useful?"
"Yes""Still weird?"
"Yes""Good" Ren looked at him.
"Good?"
"If it was not weird, you would trust it too fast" Ren stared. Then nodded slowly.
"Useful content" Bakugo scowled.
"Do not say it like Monoma" Kirishima whispered "He did make a point" Bakugo looked betrayed by the table. Todoroki offered tea.
"Available. no monitor mode" Bakugo's head hit the back of his chair.
"Why would tea have monitor mode?" Todoroki looked at the kettle.
"It should not""That is not an answer!" Mina quietly wrote tea does not have monitor mode on a scrap paper and slid it to Jiro. Jiro folded it away like contraband. Afternoon brought the second repetitions. That was where the real test lived. Doing it once made a correction possible. Doing it twice made it less like luck. Doing it tired made it honest. Bakugo returned to Monoma's route-block station. He looked already irritated. Good. Monoma smiled.
"Once more, we meet in the narrow corridor of your restraint" Bakugo pointed one finger at him.
"No poetry" Aizawa said "Begin" Monoma blocked the route.
"This route is occupied by superior judgment" Bakugo's palms sparked. He stopped.
"Civilian status?" Monoma opened his mouth. Bakugo added before he could perform "Airway. bleeding. route risk" Monoma blinked.
"Airway clear. bleeding none. route risk high if panel moves" Bakugo nodded once.
"Then hold. I flank left" Aizawa called "Pause" Bakugo turned.
"No insult" Aizawa nodded.
"Good. Stop" Bakugo stared.
"That is it?"
"Yes""One clean second run?"
"Yes" Bakugo looked like success had offended him.
"Fine" Kurose wrote: STATUS BEFORE THREAT HELD TWICE Bakugo muttered "Boring" Aizawa said "Training" Midoriya's second run hurt more. The child actor reached for him again. The silent civilian behind the route breathed shallowly. Midoriya's whole body moved toward the child. He stopped one step later than the morning. Not perfect. He froze. Aizawa did not call pause. Midoriya corrected.
"Status compare. child breathing and mobile. silent civilian shallow. Uraraka, child contact. I check silent" He moved. Good. After the run, Aizawa asked "Report" Midoriya swallowed.
"Second run worse by one step. corrected before touch. route completed" Mizushima nodded.
"Good. Not clean. durable enough to continue training" Midoriya looked like he wanted to apologize. He did not. Uraraka's second waiting-information run had the child actor cry harder. Her voice shook.
"You are waiting because breathing comes first. You still matter. Mina is with you. I will update you after three breaths" Mizushima paused.
"Good. You gave a time anchor" Kurose wrote: WAITING CAN HAVE AN ANCHOR Uraraka breathed out.
"Keep""Keep" Shinso returned to his station. Release reminder enabled. Second run. Same threshold. The teen crossed red.
"Immediate safety. stop moving""No!" Brainwashing.
"Step back behind green tape" Step.
"Release" Pulse. Reminder. He stayed with the civilian.
"You are behind green tape. You crossed red after warning. I used one movement command. You are released now. You do not have to answer me. Jiro is available" The actor nodded. Shinso turned.
"Map. Quirk used once. one movement command. released. civilian oriented. reminder less irritating. still irritating. throat fine. discomfort moderate. map present" Aizawa said "Good. Stop" Shinso looked at him.
"Only two?"
"Yes""I can do third" Aizawa stared. Shinso's mouth shut. Success does not buy another rep. He exhaled.
"Stopping" Kurose wrote: RELEASE REMINDER HELD TWICE Hatsume silently pumped one fist under the table. Power Loader pretended not to see. Then Ren returned to station two. Monitor mode again. He felt more tired now. Not exhausted. Tired enough that the second run counted. Recovery Girl watched the monitor.
"State condition" Ren breathed.
"Monitor mode active. entry role. stabilize for brace transfer. exit role. angle monitor only. no re-entry unless emergency threshold and verbal override. no emergency brace this run" Aizawa nodded.
"Begin" He moved in. Contact. Pain. Gate flicker.
"Stop" Gate narrowed.
"Contact active. sign stable. Tetsutetsu brace ready" Transfer. Release.
"Outcome. sign held. dummy safe. map. gate local. pain present" Exit line. Monitor pulse. Boundary. Aizawa triggered the sign shift sooner this time. Tetsutetsu overcorrected. Ren's hand pushed forward on instinct. Pulse. Question. He stopped.
"Angle monitor. up one. not down" Tetsutetsu adjusted. Stable. Then the dummy arm slipped again. Ren's hand barely moved. Pulse. He did not push.
"Boundary role. field rescuer for dummy arm" Kendo entered.
"Taking check" Aizawa did not end it yet. Cruel. A secondary noise triggered behind Ren. Not field hazard. Startle. His chair hand tightened. The monitor did nothing because he did not try to move. Good. Aizawa called "End" Ren exhaled.
"Map. boundary. monitor active. two forward impulses. stopped both. startle no movement. left wrist quiet. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. frustration lower. map present" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good. Stop" Ren looked at the field. There were still things he could refine. Angle phrase shorter. Pulse response smoother. Startle mapping. No. Stop.
"Stopping" Kurose wrote: BOUNDARY ROLE HELD TWICE Hatsume whispered "It helped" Ren looked at the switch.
"Yes" Then he added, because honesty was apparently required by every adult alive "I hate that it helped" Recovery Girl said "Good" Hatsume looked delighted and wounded.
"Useful hate" Kurose pointed her marker at her.
"Do not name it that" Hatsume wrote something and then crossed it out very quickly. The day's final precision exercise was group-level. Not a mock. A targeted fix chain. Each student had to perform their smallest fix once in sequence while tired, without turning it into a full scenario. It was strange. Almost boring. Almost elegant. Iida verified before amplifying a route call. Yaoyorozu assigned a second priority caller. Kaminari lowered his voice before the second sentence.
Mina mapped disappointment on her face before it reached a civilian. Todoroki named his next tool after refusing ice. Kirishima announced support lane instead of becoming wall. Sero waited for a civilian joke before making one. Asui named danger gently. Jiro relayed without interpreting feelings. Midoriya asked status before moving. Bakugo asked status before threat. Uraraka gave waiting an anchor. Shinso confirmed civilian before staff. Ren held boundary role after exit. No one did a spectacular thing.
The room felt different anyway. Mizushima gave the final assessment.
"Precision day marker. passable" Kaminari whispered "We have reached passable boring" Mizushima continued "More durable than yesterday" The room went still. Aizawa wrote it. MORE DURABLE THAN YESTERDAY No one cheered. Good. They were learning the difference between joy and pressure. After training, Ren slept for thirty-two minutes. Not collapse. Sleep. When he woke, Hana was arranging dinner containers on the desk with Daichi while Recovery Girl inspected them like a border official. Ren looked at his chair switch.
"Still weird" Hana smiled.
"Still yours?" He nodded.
"Still mine" Daichi looked at the switch.
"It asked""Yes""Good asking?"
"Annoying asking""Good enough?" Ren breathed.
"Yes" He added to his board: THE SECOND TIME IS THE TEST WAITING CAN HAVE AN ANCHOR BOUNDARY ROLE HELD TWICE Then, after looking at the switch again: HELPFUL CAN STILL FEEL INVASIVE UNTIL IT PROVES OTHERWISE Recovery Girl read it.
"Keep" Across the wing, Shinso added: PERSON FIRST. STAFF SECOND. RELEASE REMINDER HELD TWICE SILENCE CAN BE ROLE. SO CAN RETURN. He looked at the last line for a long time. Return. Not just leaving. Not just not disappearing. Return as role. He did not put it on the wall. Still desk. But he did not hide it either. At dinner, Ren came for five minutes and fifty-seven seconds again. This time, no one commented. Not because they had not noticed. Because the number had become information and not invitation.
Kaminari visibly suffered. Jiro whispered "Private pride" He whispered back "Private noticing" Bakugo looked at Ren's chair.
"Monitor thing still on?" Ren said "Off now""You choosing it tomorrow?"
"Maybe""Good" Shinso sat at the edge with barley tea. Kaminari looked at his collar. Then looked at Shinso's face. Then looked back at his food. Shinso said "Good not-question" Kaminari brightened, then dimmed himself.
"Private pride""Later""Later" Todoroki offered tea.
"Available. no release reminder" Bakugo stared at him for three full seconds.
"I am too tired to fight that" Todoroki nodded.
"Recovery""Do not call it that" The common board gained a new line after dinner. THE FIX IS REAL WHEN IT SURVIVES BEING SMALL No one knew who wrote it. Mina denied with suspicious speed. Kurose smiled at the board for half a second and then became professional again. Aizawa looked too exhausted to deny anything. The exam date remained above it. September 2. Still coming. Still not a door to run through. But the hallway looked different now. Not because they had survived another big test.
Because the small fixes had survived a second time. Because Bakugo asked before threatening. Because Midoriya stopped one step late and still corrected. Because Uraraka gave waiting a time anchor. Because Shinso looked at the person before the staff. Because Ren stayed at the boundary when his body wanted to return. Because the gear asked and did not command. Because boring had repeated itself and become structure. Ready was still ahead. But durability had begun to answer when called.
