Chương 159: The Door Opens

September 2 arrived without asking permission. That was the first insult. The sky was clear. That was the second. Kaminari stood in the common room before sunrise and stared out the window as if weather had failed to understand dramatic structure.
"It should be raining" Jiro, sitting on the couch with her exam bag at her feet and one earjack wrapped loosely around her finger, did not look up.
"No""Not storming. just respectful rain""No""Clouds?"
"No""Atmospheric acknowledgment?" Aizawa's voice came from the doorway.
"The weather does not get a vote" Kaminari turned slowly.
"You were waiting to say that" Aizawa walked in with a coffee and the expression of a man who had not slept enough but had accepted that as a personality setting.
"I knew you would give me an opening" Sero leaned over the back of the couch.
"Sensei planned for weather complaints" Aizawa said "You are predictable in useless ways" Kaminari placed one hand over his heart.
"I feel seen and poorly used" The common room board had been erased sometime before dawn. Now it held only five lines. SEPTEMBER 2THE EXAM IS NOT A VERDICTTHE FIELD KEEPS MOVINGARRIVE WHOLEBEGIN WITH CURRENT MAP No jokes came immediately. That was how everyone knew the day had weight. Mina stood in front of the board in her travel jacket, hands tucked into her sleeves.
"Begin with current map" Kurose, standing near the bag table, said "Not last night's map. not yesterday's map. not the map you wish you had" Mina nodded once.
"Current""Good" The bags were still closed. Checked. Tagged. Not locked. The tags had survived the night, which Kaminari privately considered a miracle because anxiety had hands. Ren sat near the window, exam bag beside his chair, blanket folded across his lap, wrist patch quiet. The Boundary Return Monitor module was packed in its padded slot, not attached yet. His public summary card was in the front sleeve. His emergency withdrawal card was visible, not centered. Hana and Daichi had arrived before sunrise.
Not to ask if he was sure. Not to say he had to pass. Not to hand him courage like a burden. Hana held a small wrapped breakfast container. Daichi held nothing except the look of a man preventing himself from holding too much. Ren looked up when they approached.
"Morning" Hana smiled.
"Morning" Daichi nodded.
"September 2 is rude" Ren's mouth twitched.
"Yes" Hana placed the container on the table.
"Food. no meaning required" Recovery Girl, already present and already tyrannical, said "Food has metabolic meaning" Hana looked at her.
"Emotional meaning optional" Recovery Girl considered.
"Accepted" Ren ate. Not all of it. Enough. Recovery Girl accepted enough because enough had been mapped. Shinso entered a few minutes later, exam bag over one shoulder, collar in its pouch, scarf folded. His hair looked like it had fought the pillow and negotiated no peace terms. Kaminari looked at him. Then looked away. Private. Good. Shinso noticed anyway.
"Good morning?" Kaminari froze.
"Is that operational?"
"No""Then maybe" Shinso nodded.
"Maybe accepted" Hana turned.
"Broth is packed for after. School cooler. no meaning required" Shinso looked at her. Then at the floor.
"After exists?" Hana's face did not change too much.
"Yes" Shinso stared. Then nodded once.
"Accepted" Daichi handed him a folded paper.
"Paper only" Shinso looked at it.
"Bentaro?"
"Bentaro has no exam license but strong logistical opinions" Shinso took it. Did not open it. Good. Ren had his own note in his jacket pocket already. Umbrellas open only when needed. Good. Aizawa clapped once.
"Body facts" No one groaned. That was suspiciously mature and therefore suspicious. Midoriya said "Right forearm relaxed. stomach tight. map present" Bakugo said "Palms warm. not hot. slept badly. map present" The room reacted. Not visibly. But it reacted. Bakugo glared.
"What?" Aizawa said "Good""Tch" Todoroki said "Left side normal. thinking about Shiketsu. not weather. map present" Bakugo pointed at him.
"That was close" Todoroki said "I stopped before weather""Barely" Uraraka said "Shoulders tense. apology face present. mapping it. map present" Iida said "Calves ready. urge to over-organize high. map present" Kirishima said "Shoulders loaded. no wall unless assigned. map present" Jiro said "Left ear okay. noise expectation high. map present" Kaminari said "Voice wants joke. left calf fine. fear loud. map present" Mina said "Face active. not driving. map present" Sero said "Hands ready. joke reflex high.
map present" Asui said "Breathing slow. not hiding concern. map present" Yaoyorozu said "Decision pressure high. second caller plan present. map present" Shinso looked at his bag.
"Throat fine. collar packed. fear of being default answer present. map present" Kurose nodded. Ren pressed two fingers to his patch.
"Common room. exam day. Hana. Daichi. class. bag closed. left wrist quiet. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. pressure. no gate. map present" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good" Aizawa looked around the room.
"Departure in five. No speeches" Kaminari whispered "He says that because speeches are trying to hatch" Jiro whispered "Smother them" Midoriya did not open his notebook. That was probably the largest speech he could have made. At the dorm entrance, parents and staff occupied the edges of the morning without becoming a crowd. Inko stood with Midoriya, hands clasped tightly, face brave enough to hurt. She did not tell him to win. She told him to come back for dinner. He cried a little. No one mocked him.
Bakugo looked aggressively elsewhere. Toshinori stood farther back in a plain coat and hat, thin form hidden by timing, distance, and the fact that only the people who should know were allowed to notice. Midoriya saw him. Toshinori lifted one hand. Not the old gesture. Not the pointing finger. Just a hand. Midoriya nodded. No speech. Good. Hana touched Ren's shoulder only after he leaned half an inch toward her. That half inch mattered.
"Arrive whole" Ren breathed.
"Whole is not undamaged" Daichi said "Good memory" Hana's hand trembled once. Then steadied.
"We will be here after" After exists. Ren nodded.
"Yes" Daichi tapped his own pocket.
"Bentaro will maintain umbrella readiness" Ren almost smiled.
"Tell him tactical absence acknowledged""Will do" Kurose checked her watch.
"Bus" The word moved them. The bus was the same bus. That was unfair. It had carried orientation yesterday. Today it carried the exam. It looked unchanged and therefore suspicious. Aizawa stood by the door.
"The bus is still not a battlefield" Kaminari said "But emotionally—" Aizawa looked at him. Kaminari climbed aboard.
"Bus. not battlefield. map present" The ride to the exam site was quieter than orientation. Not because there was nothing to say. Because most things that could be said had already been turned into cards, boards, or boundaries. Ren sat secured in place, hands resting on the blanket. The Boundary Return Monitor remained packed. Stage one hypothetical: inactive at start. Boundary ready only if eliminated or withdrawn. Current map would decide. He looked out the window. The city moved normally again.
People crossed streets. A delivery driver argued with a vending machine. The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. An old woman watered plants on a balcony. Two children ran late in school uniforms. The world had not paused for September 2. Good. The exam was not the whole world. Shinso sat diagonally behind him, collar still in bag. He had opened Daichi's note on the bus while everyone looked elsewhere. Bentaro respects optional answers.
Bentaro also notes that handles are useful because they are not locks. Shinso folded the note slowly. Put it back in his pocket. Handles, not locks. Annoying family. Useful. The exam center appeared through the front window. Same sign. Same gate. NATIONAL PROVISIONAL HERO LICENSE EXAMINATION CENTERAUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY Kaminari whispered "Authorized anxiety only" Jiro whispered "Map""Bus. exam sign. authorized anxiety. fear loud. voice low. map present""Better" Ren looked at the sign. Patch pulse. Stress. No gate.
Map. Bus. sign. chair secured. bag closed. left wrist quiet. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. pressure. map present. Good. At the checkpoint, U. A. disembarked into a staging lot that felt much less neutral than yesterday because every bus now seemed to be unloading a future opponent. Schools everywhere. Shiketsu. Ketsubutsu. Seijin. Seiai. Isamu. Others Ren could not place by uniform because fragments were not a catalog and the world had more people than canon scenes. That thought helped. More people than scenes.
Good. U. A. drew eyes instantly. Sports Festival. Kamino. All Might's retirement. Endeavor not present. Todoroki present. Bakugo present. Midoriya present. Ren present. Shinso present. Rumor had plenty to eat. Aizawa stopped the group before registration.
"Short forms. operational only. no rivalry. no private answers. no faces that pressure classmates. If someone asks whether you are ready, you are allowed not to satisfy them" Kaminari whispered "I am not ready to answer if I am ready" Aizawa said "Then do not""That felt healing""Do not make it a thing" U. A. moved to registration. IDs checked. Bags checked. Support declarations confirmed. Hero costumes routed to staging. Ren's file drew the same look from the desk official as yesterday. Maybe less of it.
Maybe he imagined that because he wanted less. The official said "Active conditional candidate. accessible route and support declaration confirmed" Ren said "Confirmed" Recovery Girl stood beside him. No extra explanation. Good. Shinso's collar was inspected.
"Voice collar. neutral amplification. release reminder. no modulation" Shinso said "Correct" The official marked it. Good. No moral commentary. Bakugo's gauntlets received their inspection. The support official looked relieved when they matched registration exactly. Bakugo looked offended that anyone expected last-minute changes. Hatsume, far away and not allowed near the exam site, would have been devastated. Good. In the changing area, U. A. became hero candidates. Not heroes. Not yet. Costumes went on.
Support items settled into place. Cards went into accessible pockets. Water checked. Medical tags checked. No one added anything. Ren's modified chair support system fit around the costume without making the chair look like a throne or a hospital bed. That was the compromise Power Loader had fought for with his entire tired soul. The Boundary Return Monitor attached to the control side but remained inactive. The patch stayed private. The emergency card stayed accessible. Ren looked at himself in the mirror.
Not a hero costume in the way posters imagined. Not a patient's disguise. Candidate. With visible limits. His wrist stayed quiet. Shinso adjusted the collar around his throat. Neutral. Release reminder disabled for stage one. Directional amplification available. No public alarm. No stolen voices. No surprise. He looked at the mirror and almost hated it. Then he breathed. The collar does not decide. I do. The scarf settled around his shoulders. Responder. Candidate. Not default answer. Good enough.
Class 1-A gathered near the staging hall entrance. Bakugo rolled his shoulders.
"Targets?" Aizawa said "Soon" Bakugo grinned. Aizawa looked at him.
"Remember. fists no" Bakugo clicked his tongue.
"Target balls. I know" Todoroki flexed his fingers once.
"Proportion first" Yaoyorozu checked her belt, then stopped herself from checking again.
"Checked once" Jiro tapped the wall lightly with one jack.
"Echo higher than orientation. map present" Kaminari lowered his voice before speaking.
"Fear loud. voice low. map present" Mina smiled at him. No big face. Small. He nodded. Good. Then the briefing hall doors opened. The room from orientation was full now. More than full. Hundreds of candidates in rows, school groups marked by banners and staff clusters, support gear glinting, costumes bright enough to make the air feel crowded even before anyone spoke. U. A.' s assigned seats were still in the third block. Ren's accessible seat was still in the row. Not separate. He rolled into place.
The empty space beside him was not a spotlight. It was space. Good. Shinso sat two seats away. Not glued. Not isolated. Class 1-A filled around them. Other candidates looked. Of course they did. A Ketsubutsu student with an easy smile looked over Midoriya, then Bakugo, then Ren, then away like he had collected something. Yo Shindo, if fragments were to be trusted. Fragments stayed quiet after that. Not now. Not for Ren to use. A Shiketsu line sat across the aisle. Inasa looked enormous even while sitting.
Shishikura looked like a rule waiting to become judgment. Camie sat somewhere behind them, posture loose, attention sharp in a way that felt inconsistent with the face she wore. Ren looked away. Not his door. Not now. Present Mic's voice exploded through the hall speakers with enough energy to make half the room flinch and the other half pretend they had not.
"WELCOME, EXAMINEES!" Kaminari whispered "He is a hazard we brought from home" Jiro whispered "Respectfully, yes" Present Mic stood on the stage in official announcer mode, hair impossible, grin wide, voice too alive for early morning. Beside him stood a tired-looking official with rectangular glasses, drooping shoulders, and the energy of someone who had processed too many ambitious teenagers in one lifetime. Mera. The official took the microphone after Present Mic finished making noise into a civic institution.
"Good morning. I am Mera from the Hero Public Safety Commission examination administration" His voice sounded like paperwork had learned to breathe.
"Today's Provisional Hero License Examination consists of two primary practical stages. Passing the first stage is required to proceed to the second. The first stage is a mass elimination exercise. Each candidate will wear three targets. Each candidate receives six balls. A candidate is eliminated when all three of their targets have been hit. To pass, you must eliminate two other candidates by landing hits on all of their targets.
The number of passing slots is limited to the first one hundred candidates who qualify" The room changed. One hundred. A number with teeth. Kaminari whispered "I hate numbers with teeth" Jiro whispered "Map" He nodded.
"Briefing hall. hundred slots. fear loud. voice low. map present" Mera continued "Targets may be placed on approved areas determined during inspection. Support equipment must comply with registered limitations. Unsafe conduct may result in immediate disqualification. Attacks intended to injure rather than score will be penalized. Quirk use outside exam boundaries is prohibited" Ren listened carefully. Approved areas. The target placement staff had already discussed chair-compatible target placement with U. A.
and exam officials. One on the upper torso. one shoulder. one chair-back panel linked to candidate target zone but not wheel structure. The chair was not a target. The candidate was. Good. Mera's eyes scanned the hall with the deep exhaustion of a man who knew several students would ignore him anyway.
"Because U. A. High School's Sports Festival is nationally televised, U. A. candidates should be aware that their Quirks and tendencies may be well known. This is not a rule exception. It is a field condition" Every eye in the room seemed to tilt toward them. Not all. Enough. Bakugo grinned. Aizawa, seated with staff at the side, looked like a scarf might become a leash if needed. Yaoyorozu breathed.
"Field condition" Iida whispered "Not verdict" Uraraka whispered "Not rank" Shinso said very softly "Rumor eyes are not field conditions unless I let them drive" Ren answered "Visible. not captured" Mera continued "After briefing, candidates will proceed to target attachment and field entry. The first stage begins when signaled. Once the field opens, no additional briefing will be provided. Good luck. Please do not make my paperwork worse than necessary" Present Mic reclaimed the microphone.
"YOU HEARD THE MAN! TIME TO GET THOSE TARGETS ON!" The hall erupted into motion. Target attachment was organized chaos. Exam staff moved row by row with trays of target discs and attachment seals. Each candidate's targets were checked against costume, mobility gear, and safety rules. Midoriya's targets went on chest, left shoulder, lower back. Bakugo complained about placement and was ignored. Todoroki's went where ice formation would not instantly cover them without disqualification risk.
Yaoyorozu's were placed with creation zones considered. Shinso's targets were attached to chest, right shoulder, and back. He looked at the back target. Visible. Accessible. Not a moral statement. Good. Ren's target placement took longer. Of course. The exam staff member was professional. That helped.
"Candidate Akiyama. Approved modified placement. One chest target. one right shoulder target. one chair-back linked target. Chair mobility structure is not a valid target. Strikes to wheels or essential movement mechanisms may be penalized as unsafe conduct. Do you confirm understanding?" Ren answered "Confirmed" The staff member looked at him.
"Do you need the chair-back target adjusted for reach or safety?" Need. Not want. Not special. Good. Ren looked at the target.
"Two centimeters higher. lower placement may catch on support frame" The staff member adjusted it.
"Confirm""Confirmed" Recovery Girl watched from the staff line. No comment. Good. A student nearby muttered "So we cannot hit the chair?" Bakugo's head snapped toward the voice. Aizawa took one step. Ren answered first.
"Unsafe conduct is penalized. targets are visible" The student looked at the targets. Then away. Bakugo muttered "You heard him" Aizawa said "Bakugo""What? Operational""Barely" Kirishima whispered "Barely operational is still visible" Bakugo pointed at him.
"No" As candidates moved toward the field entrance, schools began forming shapes. Not teams officially. Habits. U. A. stayed together without clumping. Class 1-A had learned that at cost. Shinso walked at the edge. Ren rolled rear-left. Midoriya and Uraraka held left-middle. Bakugo and Kirishima forward-right. Yaoyorozu center with Jiro and Iida. Todoroki central-rear enough to shape terrain if needed. Kaminari and Mina flexible. Asui high if terrain allowed. Sero where routes needed tape. Not perfect. Shape.
At the entry hall, Ms. Joke appeared beside Aizawa like trouble with a smile.
"Eraser! Your kids look serious enough to scare the exam itself" Aizawa did not look at her.
"They were trained" She leaned closer.
"Come on, smile a little. Big day""No""You wound me""Unlikely" Kaminari whispered "Is this flirting or combat?" Jiro whispered "Both maybe" Ms. Joke's eyes moved over Class 1-A, then paused on Shinso and Ren. Not pity. Curiosity. Professional interest.
"New faces in the pack" Aizawa's voice flattened.
"Students" She smiled.
"Good answer" Then she looked at the class and raised her voice slightly.
"Ketsubutsu will be aiming at you, by the way. No hard feelings. U. A. is just famous" Bakugo grinned.
"Good" Ms. Joke laughed.
"Oh, that one is definitely yours" Aizawa said "Unfortunately" Yo Shindo approached with the timing of someone who looked polite enough to be dangerous. Beside him stood Tatami Nakagame, posture compact, eyes assessing. Shindo smiled at Midoriya.
"U. A., right? It is an honor. Your Sports Festival was incredible" His voice was warm. Too warm? Maybe. Midoriya smiled politely.
"Thank you. We will do our best" Shindo's eyes flicked to Bakugo, Todoroki, Ren, Shinso.
"Looks like your roster is even more interesting now" Shinso's face did not change. Ren looked at the field doors. Midoriya did not overexplain.
"Operational questions can wait until after the exam" Shindo blinked. Then smiled wider.
"Fair enough" Tatami looked amused. Bakugo muttered "Fake" Kirishima whispered "Map not mouth" Bakugo clicked his tongue but did not escalate. Across the corridor, Inasa's voice boomed.
"U. A.! LET US FACE THE EXAM WITH FULL SPIRIT!" Several candidates flinched. Todoroki looked at him.
"I will face the field first" Inasa grinned like this was somehow excellent.
"GOOD!" Shishikura stood behind him, expression sour.
"Volume is not dignity" Inasa shouted "DIGNITY CAN ALSO BE LOUD!" Shishikura looked pained. Kaminari whispered "I like him and fear him" Jiro whispered "Correct" Then the field doors began to open. The sound was not dramatic. Not really. Metal tracks. heavy mechanisms. air shifting. The body disagreed. Ren's wrist patch pulsed. Gate. Small. He pressed two fingers.
"Stop" Pain stayed. Map. Entry hall. field doors opening. targets attached. chair. class. other schools. left wrist gate local. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. pressure. map present. Recovery Girl, from the staff line, nodded once. Shinso looked at the doors. Throat fine. Collar neutral. Release reminder disabled. No Quirk expected yet. Map. Entry hall. field doors. targets. crowd. voice pressure. throat fine. map present. Good. Aizawa spoke from beside them.
"One sentence" Not everyone. Just the class. Yaoyorozu said "Shape holds" Iida said "Verify before amplify" Uraraka said "Waiting gets information" Midoriya said "Status before movement" Bakugo said "If they expect chase, I choose angle" Todoroki said "Proportion first. escalation named" Kirishima said "No wall unless assigned" Jiro said "Facts.
not fear translation" Kaminari said "Voice low before second sentence" Mina said "Face not driving" Asui said "Quiet can be urgent" Sero said "Tape route before restraint" Shinso said "If agency remains, I protect it" Ren said "If I stop, field keeps moving" Aizawa looked at them.
"Good. Go" They entered the field. It was not the same field as the mock. Good. A cityscape sprawled under the artificial sky of the exam arena, broader than Gym Gamma had ever been, layered with concrete streets, alleys, low buildings, elevated walkways, broken walls, open plazas, blind corners, and enough verticality to make every angle a question. The air smelled faintly of dust, rubber, and Quirk-safe construction material. Distant speakers clicked on overhead. Candidates spread quickly.
Schools formed clusters, broke them, reformed. Some looked at the terrain. Some looked at U. A. Some looked at both and made calculations. U. A. moved. Not clumped. Not scattered. Not chased. Not frozen. Ren took rear-left with a wall to one side and two exit lines mapped. His chair moved cleanly over the field surface. No wheel catch. Good. Shinso moved middle-rear, line of sight to Jiro, Yaoyorozu, Ren, and Iida. Collar neutral. Scarf loose. Balls secured. Bakugo wanted forward. Of course.
But he waited for shape. Barely. Good. Yaoyorozu called "Initial terrain. wide plaza ahead. alleys left and right. avoid center until first wave identified" Iida added "Left alley partial cover. right elevated risk" Jiro plugged into a wall panel for sound.
"Movement in multiple groups. Several turning toward us" Kaminari swallowed.
"U. A. hunted" Aizawa was not there to answer. They had to be. Yaoyorozu said "Field condition" Bakugo grinned.
"Finally" Midoriya said "Shape. not wall" Ren's targets felt very visible. Because they were. Good. Visible did not mean captured. Shinso's back target prickled without touch. Silence did not mean absent. The overhead speaker crackled. Mera's exhausted voice filled the field.
"First stage begins in ten seconds" Around them, candidates shifted. A Ketsubutsu cluster to the left. Shiketsu spread across the far side. Several smaller schools forming lines that angled toward U. A. Known. Hunted. Not alone.
"Nine" Ren breathed. Current map. Stage one. monitor inactive. targets three. no brace. chair mobility. lose two targets check map. third elimination accepted. field keeps moving.
"Eight" Shinso breathed. Stage one. release reminder disabled. no Quirk by default. candidate exchange only if appropriate. unanswered does not mean absent.
"Seven" Midoriya loosened his right hand. Not All Might. Me.
"Six" Bakugo rolled his shoulders. Targets tomorrow. Tomorrow was now.
"Five" Todoroki flexed both hands. Field first. Weather later never.
"Four" Uraraka's shoulders lowered. Apology face mapped.
"Three" Yaoyorozu raised one hand.
"Ready lanes""Two" Kaminari lowered his voice before he needed it.
"Map before sparks""One" Ren's wrist patch pulsed. Not gate. Pressure. He did not press it. Map present. The buzzer sounded. The field moved. Every school that had been waiting turned U. A. into a direction. Balls flew in the first second. Not randomly. At them. Of course. Bakugo blasted low and cut angle instead of chasing the nearest thrower.
"Right wave!" Jiro called "High left!" Sero's tape snapped into a route line. Todoroki made a narrow ice lip, not a wall. Kirishima moved support lane, not wall. Midoriya caught the first incoming ball and redirected it toward open ground instead of overcommitting. Uraraka floated a small debris slab to block a line. Yaoyorozu called "Do not clump. score windows only" Kaminari's voice stayed low.
"Left group closing. no spark yet" Shinso's scarf snapped out and knocked one ball off course before it could clip Jiro's shoulder target.
"No power. words are not needed yet" Ren stopped. Stationary. A ball curved toward his chair-back target. The thrower expected slow. Expected panic. Expected wall. Ren moved forward half a meter. The ball passed behind him. He threw from low right. Not at the thrower's chest. At the ball path of another candidate aiming at Bakugo. Collision. Deflection. Bakugo saw. Grinned.
"Good weird!" His return throw struck the candidate's shoulder target. Hit. The exam had begun. Not with a miracle. With a shape that held for one breath. Then the second wave hit.
