Chương 87: When Smoke Became Weather

The morning after the smoke report began with no smoke. That was almost worse. Ren stood on the lodge porch at 06: 40 with Kurose on his left, Aizawa near the steps, Mandalay by the railing, and Recovery Girl's face watching from Kurose's tablet. The forest beyond the porch looked ordinary in the specific way that made human alarms feel dramatic. Leaves moved. Insects made thin morning sounds. Sunlight touched the upper branches.
The air smelled of damp wood, soil, and breakfast beginning somewhere inside the lodge. No smoke. No fire. No intruder. No proof. Ren held his hands open. Right palm cool. Left forearm cool. No thread. No lattice. No fever. Only the memory of the previous night's dry trace at the back of his throat and the sentence he had written before sleep. The structure caught the report. I do not know yet if it caught the danger. Recovery Girl spoke first.
"Status""Yellow. Morning review. No heat. No fragment. Sleep five fifty. Woke twice. No dream retained clearly. Smoke association present as memory, not active""Hands stable""Yes""Any urge to reinterpret last night to make it cleaner?" Ren looked at the forest.
"Yes" Kurose wrote. Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good. Do not" Aizawa's eyes moved from the tree line to Ren.
"Say what we know" Ren breathed once.
"No real smoke confirmed. No perimeter breach found on routine sweep. No distress call detected by Mandalay. Smoke association occurred during approved porch block. Moderate right palm heat, mild left forearm warmth. Reported before image. Heat decreased after moving inside.
No actionable location""Say what we do not know" Kurose said"Whether it was false association, early warning, stress pattern, environmental cue below staff detection, or unrelated fragment pressure" Mandalay's expression tightened at below staff detection, but she did not object. Good. Kurose said "Action today""Continue schedule with heightened reporting. No speculation outside staff review. No treating absence of evidence as proof of safety. No treating report as proof of danger" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" The word landed without comfort. That was probably correct. Mandalay looked toward the forest.
"Tiger will add two additional perimeter sweeps. I will keep broader communication watch during afternoon blocks. Staff routes remain unchanged for now" Ren nodded. No dramatic cancellation. No evacuation. No turning one incomplete warning into a cage. He had asked for that before camp. If I report fear or fragment association, the response cannot be automatic shame or automatic removal unless threshold requires it. The structure was following the rule.
He hated that following the rule meant staying near the forest. Trustworthy data was sometimes cruel because it refused to panic for him. Breakfast carried the information without making it public. The staff did not announce smoke. The standard groups were not told that Ren had felt something. They were told that perimeter checks were increased due to routine safety review and that anyone leaving assigned routes would be dragged back by staff, paperwork, or both. Aizawa said that last part while looking at Bakugo.
Bakugo pointed with chopsticks.
"I haven't left a route""Preventive glare" Kaminari whispered "The tool evolves" Sero whispered "It has always been alive" Midoriya looked at Ren once from across the hall. Not with panic. Not exactly. More like he wanted to ask whether the air had changed and knew asking in the dining hall would make the air change by itself. Ren gave the smallest shake of his head. Not now. Midoriya nodded and looked back at his food. Good. Uraraka watched the exchange and then deliberately drank water.
Iida saw that and did not ask a question. Todoroki looked toward the windows for one second, then away. Yaoyorozu touched the edge of her schedule, breathed, and folded it again. Bakugo noticed all of them noticing and scowled at his tray.
"Everyone's acting weird" Kirishima looked up.
"We always act weird""Not the same weird" Kurose's voice came from the staff table.
"Eat" Bakugo glared at her. Aizawa said "That applies to you too" He ate. Ren logged breakfast. Food completed. Appetite moderate-low. No nausea. Social environment alert but contained. No heat. Shinso read the line over his shoulder.
"Social environment alert but contained sounds like a warning label for this whole school" Ren said "Accurate""Did you sleep?"
"Five fifty""Bad""Acceptable""No. You would mark me down" Ren paused. Then wrote: Sleep low. Fatigue risk. No compensation. Extra check before afternoon. Shinso nodded.
"Better" Ren looked at him.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Smoke report memory. No Quirk pressure. Wanting to ask if we should leave. Not asking because it is not my call" Ren's chest tightened.
"You can ask as status" Shinso looked away.
"Should we leave?" The question sat between them. Not challenge. Not cowardice. Not debt. Ren answered honestly.
"I do not know" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Terrible answer""Yes""Trustworthy?"
"Yes""Worse" They went to the morning block anyway. The safe-zone relay continued under heightened staff watch. That phrase appeared on the top of the packet and made everyone act as though the paper had weight. HEIGHTENED STAFF WATCH Ren stood on the blue square at the observation deck. The railing was familiar now. Familiarity was risk. He reported that.
"Yellow. Familiar deck. No heat. Caution for comfort" Kurose wrote. Mandalay smiled faintly.
"Comfort reported before complacency. Good" The first active group moved below. Midoriya, Uraraka, Iida, Asui. They were on a route through damp lower terrain. Rescue pack. Visibility screens. Moving obstruction. Staff sweep visible in the background. Tiger stood farther out than usual, arms crossed, watching both the drill and the tree line. Ren noticed Tiger. That was safety data. He did not overanalyze. The group moved well.
Midoriya stumbled once on a root and corrected without fracture, without apology, without looking toward the deck. Uraraka reported nausea one. Iida slowed at the correct turn. Asui checked overhead before everyone else remembered overhead existed. No call for three minutes. No-call discomfort. Reported. Held. Then Mandalay's posture shifted. Small. A hand near her temple. Not alarm yet. Ren saw. Kurose saw him see.
"Status" Kurose said softly"Yellow. Mandalay posture shift noticed. No heat. Awaiting staff, not speculating" Mandalay opened her eyes.
"Tiger reports no breach on east sweep. One old campfire trace outside current perimeter, cold, likely from prior hikers or maintenance. No active smoke" Cold campfire trace. Ren's right palm warmed. Mild. He opened it.
"Yellow-red. Smoke-adjacent information trigger. Mild right palm heat. No image. No new location. Continuing seated" Enjoying the story? Show your support by reading it on the official site. Recovery Girl was not on live tablet this block, but Kurose logged and said "Proceed if stable" Ren nodded. Cold campfire trace. Prior hikers. Maintenance. Could mean nothing. Could mean someone had tested a route. No speculation outside staff review. He wrote only: Cold trace. Staff aware. The block continued.
He transmitted two calls. One for stretcher swing risk. One for false distress sound near the ravine. Both accepted. Both useful. No additional heat. The second group entered. Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero, Kaminari. Explosions made the forest feel more normal, which Ren found unfair. Bakugo's violence had become a known variable. Known variables could deceive. Still, the group's route discipline had improved. Sero marked paths earlier. Kirishima protected civilian routes instead of only bracing impacts.
Kaminari asked before discharging. Bakugo accepted one transmitted call with a shouted "I saw it!" and then followed it anyway. Strong data. Ren did not smile. Mostly. The third group started late because of a staff adjustment. Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, Tokoyami, Shoji. Lower shadow route. Dense trees. The same branch-heavy area as yesterday. Ren's palm warmed before they entered. Mild. Anticipatory. He reported.
"Yellow-red. Anticipatory heat before branch-heavy route. Mild right palm. No image. No sound. Request whether to continue relay" Kurose looked at Mandalay. Mandalay looked at the group below, then at Ren.
"You may continue with one-call limit. If heat rises, stop" Ren nodded.
"Accepted" Todoroki moved first this time, creating a thin dry strip with heat instead of ice. Yaoyorozu marked edges. Shoji extended arms for side awareness. Tokoyami kept Dark Shadow closer than yesterday. Good. The first branch cracked under Shoji's far-left hand. Expected. Heat mild. No call needed. The second crack came from farther beyond the route. Not where the group stood. Not staff. Ren felt smoke before smelling it. No. Not smell. A memory of smell. Dry. Sharp. Wrong for damp forest.
His right palm flared moderate. Left forearm warmed.
"Yellow-red rising. Smoke association again. Moderate right palm heat. Mild left forearm. No visual. No confirmed real smoke. Trigger: off-route branch crack plus route area" Kurose turned immediately.
"Mandalay" Mandalay closed her eyes. Seconds stretched. Below, the active group continued, unaware. Ren's urge to call them back spiked. He opened both hands.
"Usefulness pressure. Wanting to halt field group. Not my call" Kurose's voice stayed level.
"Good. Hold" Mandalay opened her eyes.
"No distress call. But Tiger reports faint scent west-northwest, not visible yet. He is checking" Kurose's face changed. Aizawa, lower on the trail, looked up toward the deck. Ren's heat held. Not rising. Holding. No image. No hand. No smoke visible. But the word had crossed from Ren's body to Tiger's nose. That mattered. Kurose lifted the radio.
"Pause Group Three at safe marker. Reason: staff route check. No alarm" Mandalay transmitted. Below, Todoroki's group stopped. Good. No panic. Ren breathed. One. Two. Then the wind shifted. This time, everyone smelled it. Not much. A thin line of dry burn under damp leaves. Real smoke. Mandalay's eyes snapped toward the west. Aizawa's scarf moved before his body did. Kurose's voice hardened.
"Field hold. Conditional candidates remain on deck" Ren reported because his body demanded movement and reporting was the rail.
"Smoke real. Yellow-red. Right palm moderate-high. Left forearm mild. No image yet. No movement. Maintaining role" The forest below changed. Not visibly at first. Sound changed before sight. Birds rose. Not all at once. A ripple. Then a distant shout from the west route. Not one of the students on Ren's visible field. Mandalay's hand went to her temple. Her face went white.
"Unknown hostile presence on west route" Silence. Then Aizawa's voice through the radio.
"Confirm" Mandalay listened to something Ren could not hear. Then spoke with the controlled precision of someone holding panic by the throat.
"Tiger engaged. Multiple intruders possible. Smoke source active. Standard groups hold or withdraw per staff command" Kurose pressed the emergency channel.
"Lodge protocol" Thirteen moved toward the deck stairs. Ren's heat climbed. High-moderate. No thread. No lattice. No activation. He kept his hands open.
"Status high-moderate. No activation. No image. Request assigned role" Kurose looked at him. The world had shifted and she still answered the structure.
"Communication Anchor. Deck relay until moved. Calls only through staff. No field movement""Yes" Shinso stood from the bench behind him.
"Status. Yellow-red. Anger. No Quirk pressure. Awaiting assignment" Kurose pointed to him.
"Disruption Support. Remain with conditional group. If lodge civilians or students panic, physical and verbal obstruction only unless cleared. No independent movement""Yes" Mandalay's voice changed. Telepathic broadcast. Ren did not hear it with his ears, but every visible student below reacted as if the air had spoken directly into their skulls. A moment later, Mandalay repeated aloud for the staff channel.
"All students. This is an emergency. Villains have entered the forest. Follow staff instructions. Do not engage unless necessary for survival. Move to assigned safe positions" Villains. The word struck the deck like a dropped beam. Ren's vision narrowed. Not because he had not expected danger. Because expectation did not make arrival smaller. He reported automatically.
"Villain confirmation trigger. Right palm high. Left forearm moderate. No image. No thread. No movement. Maintaining role" Recovery Girl's tablet lit up in Kurose's hand before anyone touched it. Of course she had been patched in.
"Hands" Ren lifted them. The palms were red but not ridged.
"No lattice""Good. Sit if dizzy""Not dizzy""Do not become a hero about chairs" Ren sat on the deck bench without arguing. Kurose looked relieved for half a second and then not. Below, Todoroki's group began withdrawing under Aizawa's command. Todoroki placed controlled ice barriers behind them, not large, not showy, enough to slow approach from the west. Yaoyorozu marked the safe path with bright strips. Shoji shielded Tokoyami's side. Tokoyami kept Dark Shadow tight despite the shade deepening around them.
Ren's mind began mapping. West-northwest smoke. Tiger engaged. Group Three visible withdrawing. Group One lower ravine. Group Two east clearing. Lodge safe route. Kota. The pressure hit like a hand around the spine. Kota. Water. Stone. A hidden place away from heroes. A boy not in the dining hall. A boy who did not want to be where heroes gathered. No. No image stable. But the association sharpened. Ren's heat surged high. Both palms now. He opened them wider.
"Kota association high. High bilateral palm heat. No lattice. Images unstable. Water, stone, high place or side path. Safety-actionable question. Is Kota accounted for?" Mandalay turned. All color left her face. Kurose spoke at once.
"Mandalay" Mandalay closed her eyes. Telepathic reach. A second. Two. Three. Her eyes opened.
"I do not have visual confirmation. He is not in lodge. He may be at his usual hideout" Usual hideout. The pressure became shape. Not location in Ren's mind. But confirmation that the question had been right. Ren gripped the bench edge. No. Hands open. He opened them.
"Kota unaccounted. Association confirmed as safety-actionable. Request staff dispatch. I do not know location" Mandalay's voice was tight.
"I do" Aizawa's voice came through radio.
"Nearest staff?" Mandalay answered "I am too far. Tiger engaged west. Pixie-Bob with east route. Ragdoll checking lodge perimeter" Another radio crackle. Static. Then Tiger's voice, strained.
"West route blocked. Cannot disengage cleanly" Ren's mind moved faster than permission. No. Role. Map. Not body. Known students. Midoriya's group lower ravine? In canon? No canon. Here Group One near lower ravine and could be closest to side path? Need staff decides. Ren looked at the visible map. He did not know the hideout. Mandalay did.
"Question" he said sharply Kurose looked at him.
"Ask""Which active student group is nearest to Kota's likely location, and can Mandalay transmit coordinates to staff or group without pulling students into combat?" Mandalay's eyes snapped to the terrain map. Aizawa's radio crackled.
"Answer" Mandalay pointed to a side ridge beyond the lower ravine.
"Midoriya's group may be closest, but sending students toward an unconfirmed hostile is unsafe" Correct. Terrible. Ren said "Do not send group. Send location to nearest pro. If no pro, instruct nearest group to avoid but report sightline?" Kurose shook her head.
"No student search" Good. Correct. Still impossible. Then Mandalay flinched. A voice only she heard. Her gaze shot toward the lower valley.
"Young Midoriya has broken from Group One" The deck went still. Ren's stomach dropped. Midoriya. Of course. Of course. Aizawa's voice snapped "Why?" Mandalay's eyes closed.
"He saw smoke and heard about Kota in broadcast overlap. He is moving toward ridge" Kurose's hand clenched on the radio. Ren's heat hit high. No thread. No lattice. No activation. He did not stand. That felt like tearing skin.
"Status high. Midoriya deviation trigger. No movement. Maintaining Communication Anchor. Request message to Midoriya: do not engage alone, confirm visual, report location, preserve body" Kurose looked at Mandalay.
"Transmit" Mandalay did. Ren did not hear it. He imagined Midoriya hearing words in his mind while running toward a child who hated heroes because heroes had left a wound in the shape of absence. Preserve body. Do not engage alone. Would he? Maybe. Maybe not. Ren's role was not belief. It was the next safe action. He forced his eyes back to the map.
"Group One remaining?" Mandalay listened.
"Iida, Uraraka, Asui holding lower route under Tiger's prior instruction. Tiger cannot reach. Aizawa moving west intercept. Pixie-Bob redirecting constructs to slow east approach" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Calls" He understood. She was authorizing map support. Not field command. Calls.
"Call one. Group One hold lower route and do not follow Midoriya unless staff directs. They become secondary casualties if they chase" Mandalay transmitted.
"Call two. Group Three withdrawal continue to lodge via marked route, Todoroki rear barrier only if it does not isolate him" Mandalay transmitted. Below, Todoroki's ice shifted smaller. Good.
"Call three. Group Two east clearing protect civilian route and wait for Pixie-Bob. Bakugo not to pursue smoke source" Mandalay's mouth tightened. She transmitted. A distant explosion answered. Kurose said "He received it" Shinso muttered "Did he accept it?" No one answered. The smoke became visible then. A thin gray thread above the trees to the west. Not much. Enough. Real. Ren stared. His hands burned. No ridges. No thread.
But his scars under both sleeves remembered cold, impact, restraint, ice, red lines, wanting.
"Status. Smoke visible. High heat bilateral. No lattice. No movement. Request medical check" Recovery Girl's voice was fierce.
"You are seated. Hands open. Breathe. If ridging appears, Kurose removes you from deck""Yes" Shinso stepped closer. Not into Ren's space. One step.
"Awareness range maintained" Kurose nodded.
"Good" The lodge alarm sounded. Not loud enough to panic. Sharp enough to organize. Students inside began moving under Ragdoll's direction. Conditional group members were escorted from side rooms toward the main hall. Sano appeared pale but holding a stack of signal cards he had no business carrying. Arai took them from him and gave him one back. Kenta moved to hold the door without blocking it. Quiet routes. Safe zone not empty. Now safe zone had to become shelter. Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Go with Thirteen. Main hall disruption support. Keep movement clear. No Quirk use unless authorized" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren said "Go" The word came out too sharp. Shinso's eyes narrowed. Not hurt. Checking. Ren corrected.
"Status support transferred to staff. I consent to end awareness range. Go" Shinso nodded once.
"Revoked cleanly" Then he moved. Good. Good. Terrible. Mandalay's face twisted suddenly.
"Contact near Kota" Ren's world narrowed.
"Who?" She listened.
"Young Midoriya. Unknown hostile. Large build. High aggression" Muscular. The name tried to arrive. Ren did not know it. Not clearly. Heavy. Muscle. Blood. A child behind. Green breaking. No. No. Do not name what you do not know.
"Fragment pressure. Heavy hostile near Kota. High danger. No clear name. Midoriya likely outmatched if alone. Message: evade, protect child, do not trade body for time unless no route. Request nearest staff intercept priority" Mandalay transmitted, voice shaking now. Kurose radioed Aizawa. Aizawa's answer came broken by static and movement.
"Blocked. Moving. West hostile delaying. Continue" Ren heard a crack in the distance. Not branch. Impact. His palms burned high enough that the skin felt too tight. No lattice. No lattice. Recovery Girl said "Akiyama. Look at Kurose, not the smoke" He did. Kurose stood in front of him now. Not blocking the map entirely. Blocking the part of the forest that wanted to become everything.
"Status""Red-edge. High heat. No ridging. No image stable. Heavy hostile, Kota, Midoriya. Usefulness pressure extreme. No movement""Action""Remain seated. Compress only staff-requested calls. Report if image stabilizes or lattice signs appear""Good" The word did not help. It held. From the main hall below the deck, voices rose. Not screams. Orders. Thirteen directing. Ragdoll calling names. Shinso's voice, sharp and dry, cutting through panic.
"Clear the doorway. If you are standing still, stand somewhere useful. Left side empty. Move" Someone protested. Shinso's voice sharpened.
"Do you want the medical route blocked?" Movement followed. Good. He was acting before they answered. Ren gripped the edge of his own knees. Open hands. No gripping. He opened them again. Mandalay transmitted constantly now, her face pale with the strain of too many minds, too many routes, too many children in trees that had stopped being training ground and become battlefield. Smoke thickened west. Then another column rose east. Multiple sources. Not accident. Villains. The word had shape now.
The structure had caught the report. It had not caught the danger before entry. But it was catching pieces. Routes. Groups. Warnings. Children. Ren's next image came all at once. Not clean. Not enough to be a map. A black-blue flame licking through trees. A grin split too wide. Hands reaching from shadow. A blade glinting low. A gas mask. A boy with explosions surrounded by smoke, anger making him bright enough to see from far away. Bakugo. Public target. The thought arrived like a warning label. Ren gasped.
"Image fragment. Unstable. Multiple hostiles. Flame. Blade. Gas mask? Hands? Bakugo in smoke. Public target association. Low-confidence but safety-actionable. Warn Group Two and staff: do not let Bakugo isolate or pursue. Smoke may be used to separate" Kurose did not question the length. She looked at Mandalay.
"Transmit compressed" Mandalay's voice became iron.
"Group Two. Do not isolate. Bakugo remains with group. Smoke separation risk. Staff moving" Somewhere east, an explosion tore through the forest. Ren could almost hear Bakugo rejecting the warning. Almost. Then Mandalay said "Group Two acknowledged by Kirishima and Sero. Bakugo verbally resistant. Still in sight" Good. Not enough. Good. The main hall door opened behind them and Thirteen stepped onto the deck.
"Conditional shelter route secured. Kurose, if Akiyama destabilizes, I can take map relay" Ren heard the words. If Akiyama destabilizes. Not insult. Plan. Good. Terrible. He said "Status high but functional. No lattice. I can continue if limited" Recovery Girl said "Two more calls maximum unless new direct safety information. Then reassess""Accepted" Limit. Rail. Two calls. The forest roared. Not metaphor. A real roar of impact somewhere west, then a burst of force that made birds explode from the canopy.
Mandalay staggered.
"Kota and Midoriya engaged. Hostile overwhelming. Midoriya injured" Ren's body tried to stand. It did not ask permission. It moved. Half an inch. Kurose's hand came down on his shoulder. Not hard. Enough.
"Role" The word cracked through him. Role. Communication Anchor. Not body. Not red zone. Not forest. He sat. Every scar in his body seemed to hate him.
"Status red-edge. Movement impulse stopped. High heat. No lattice. Call one: Midoriya must use terrain, not direct contest. Protect Kota by moving him behind stone or elevation. Do not trade straight impact" Mandalay transmitted. Her voice shook. Ren could not know if it arrived in time. Call one used. The next minute lasted a year. Static. Smoke. Distant impacts. The lodge moving students. Shinso's voice below. Aizawa's radio cutting in and out. Tiger still engaged. Pixie-Bob redirecting earth constructs.
Todoroki's group nearing lodge. Bakugo's group not isolated yet. Midoriya and Kota still outside safe route. Ren's palms were too hot. Kurose crouched in front of him.
"Hands" No ridges. No lattice. Just red. Recovery Girl said "One call left. Do not spend it on fear" Ren almost laughed. It would have been hysterical. He did not. Mandalay's eyes snapped open.
"Young Midoriya is still moving. Kota conscious. Hostile pressing. No staff arrival yet" Ren's mind gave him nothing clean. No map. No solution. No miracle. Only one principle. The route back counts as part of the route. If Midoriya could not win, he needed a route that preserved Kota until help.
"Call two. Midoriya should move toward staff intercept if any path opens. Goal is child away from hostile, not victory. Repeat. Not victory" Mandalay transmitted. Ren's hands shook.
"Two calls used. Request removal from relay" Kurose's face changed. Pride. Pain. No time for either.
"Accepted. Thirteen takes relay. Akiyama shifts to recovery position inside" He wanted to say no. He had requested it. That did not stop wanting. He stood with Kurose's help only because standing alone might become proof. Thirteen took his place at the map board. Mandalay kept transmitting. Aizawa's radio crackled. The forest kept burning. Ren stepped off the deck. Not toward the forest. Toward the lodge. Every step felt wrong. Every step was correct. Inside, the main hall had become a shelter route.
Students not deployed or injured gathered in marked zones. Ragdoll counted names. Shinso stood near the inner doorway, body angled to keep the path clear. Sano held one signal card in both hands like a talisman. Arai organized water bottles without being asked. Kenta checked whether benches blocked the medical path. Safe zone was not empty. Quiet work was still work. Now quiet work sounded like controlled fear. Shinso saw Ren.
"Status?"
"Red-edge decreasing. Relay transferred. High heat. No lattice. Two calls used. Removed by request" Shinso stared. Then nodded.
"Good" The word almost broke him. Ren sat against the wall in the recovery zone because Kurose pointed there and because he had already spent enough of the day proving stopping was real. Outside, smoke thickened beyond the windows. Real. Gray. Moving through trees. The warning had become weather. Ren placed his hands flat on his knees. No ridges. No thread. No lattice. Not yet. He looked toward the door. He did not run. The structure had caught him. Now it had to catch everyone else.
