Chương 94: The Count That Came Home

U. A. did not let the students return as a crowd. That was probably wise. Crowds turned fear into weather. Crowds made it too easy to look for someone and too hard to admit who was missing. Crowds gave panic routes through shoulders, elbows, doorways, whispers, half-heard names, and the empty space where a voice should have answered. So U. A. broke them into lines. Medical line. Irritant line. Witness line. Guardian contact line. Target protocol line. Staff debrief line. Missing staff file.
Ren watched the categories form through the glass wall of observation room one and understood, slowly, that the school had not brought them home. It had sorted the wreckage. His room had no loose objects. That remained the first thing his mind returned to whenever the hallway became too much. No loose pens. No small clips. No rolling stool. No water bottle without a tether. No tray. No coins. No keys. No unsecured medical tools.
Even the monitor cables were clipped to the stand, and the stand was locked to the floor. The room was not empty. It was disciplined. That made it worse. Ren sat in the central chair, hands open on his knees, palms warm but no longer hot. Kurose stood near the glass. Shinso sat across from him after a second smoke check, eyes red but lungs declared functional enough for observation and voice rest he clearly intended to ignore.
Recovery Girl had left to handle Midoriya, then returned twice, then left again, moving through the intake with the fury of someone whose patients had become a battlefield against her wishes. Aizawa had not sat down once. Nezu had come and gone. All Might had come and gone. Hana and Daichi had been taken to a guardian briefing room and had not come back yet. That was correct. Ren hated correct.
He wrote because Recovery Girl had allowed charting in limited blocks and because his hands needed a task that did not become escape. U. A. intake. Observation room one. No loose objects. Palms warm. No ridging. No lattice. Target protocol active. Parents briefed separately. Shinso present by consent. Count incomplete. He paused on the last line. Count incomplete. Then added: Not because students are missing. Because Ragdoll is. Shinso read it upside down from across the room. His mouth tightened.
"Trustworthy" Ren looked at him.
"You are replacing good""Good is suspicious today""Yes""Trustworthy still sucks""Yes" Kurose said "Both of you. Status" Ren answered first.
"Yellow-red. Palms warm. No lattice. Writing controlled. Count incomplete line trigger mild" Shinso leaned back.
"Yellow-red. Smoke throat. No Quirk pressure. Social debt from guardian concern unresolved. Ragdoll line trigger present. Irritation at chairs moderate" Kurose wrote.
"Chairs?" Shinso looked at his chair.
"It has become symbolic" Ren said "Food first" Shinso pointed at him.
"Do not bring your mother into furniture trauma" Kurose closed her eyes for one second. That meant the world had not ended entirely. Outside the room, Iida passed with his mother and brother's name on his phone screen, though he had not been allowed a long call yet. His posture was immaculate and wrong. Too straight. Too ready to become useful again because usefulness was easier than shaking.
Uraraka sat on a bench farther down the hall with a cup of water in both hands, her parents' voices coming through a secured tablet while she kept nodding as if they could see every nod and be held together by them. Todoroki stood alone near a wall under staff supervision, one hand wrapped around a paper cup he had not drunk from. Yaoyorozu sat two seats away, not beside him, because staff had made every distance intentional. Bakugo was in a separate decontamination and assessment room.
His voice occasionally reached the corridor anyway, reduced by walls but recognizable by outrage. Kirishima's laugh followed once. Then a cough. Then someone told them both to stop talking. Alive sounds. Ugly. Necessary. A secured monitor on the wall outside switched from intake status to emergency guardian information. No sound came through. Only text. U. A.
STUDENT SAFETY REVIEW IN PROGRESSGUARDIAN BRIEFINGS BY CATEGORYPUBLIC STATEMENT PENDING POLICE COORDINATIONDO NOT SHARE UNVERIFIED INFORMATION The last line repeated every thirty seconds. Do not share unverified information. Ren looked at it until the words became shapes. Shinso noticed.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Public statement anxiety. No heat""Action?"
"Look away" He did. Kurose wrote. Good. No. Trustworthy. The first formal count at U. A. happened at 19: 10. Not in the hall. Not with everyone gathered. Nezu had refused the symbolic disaster of placing every surviving student in one room and reading names under lights. Instead, the count moved through connected rooms, medical bays, guarded corridors, tablets, clipped radios, and staff voices. A count that traveled because no room could hold the whole event safely. Still, Ren heard parts of it. Everyone did.
Names became architecture.
"Midoriya Izuku. Trauma bay two. Alive. Critical but stabilized for transfer" Uraraka covered her mouth in the hallway. Iida's shoulders shook once. Todoroki's eyes closed. Bakugo's room went silent. Kota, somewhere beyond Ren's sight, made a sound no child should have to make after hearing alive and critical in the same breath.
"Bakugo Katsuki. Observation three. Alive. Irritant exposure mild-moderate. Minor injuries. Elevated target status" Bakugo shouted "Stop saying target like I'm luggage!" Aizawa's voice answered from somewhere closer.
"Then stop being classified as one""That's not my fault!"
"No. It is still the category" Silence. Then Bakugo said something too low to hear. Kirishima laughed once and was ordered to breathe instead.
"Uraraka Ochaco. Hallway medical bench two. Alive. Irritant exposure mild. Nausea controlled" Her hands tightened around the water cup.
"Iida Tenya. Witness line. Alive. Minor strain" Iida bowed to no one, because the count was not a person.
"Asui Tsuyu. Medical bench four. Alive. Irritant exposure mild""Shinso Hitoshi. Observation one. Alive. Smoke exposure mild. Authorized Quirk use recorded" Shinso's face changed. Not much. Enough. Ren said softly "Counted" Shinso swallowed.
"Annoying""Trustworthy" He looked away.
"Akiyama Ren. Observation one. Alive. No major injury. Target protocol active. No Scar Tissue activation" The name entered the room differently when spoken by someone else. Ren felt his palms warm. Not high. A flare of being made official.
"Status. Name in count trigger. Mild heat increase. No lattice" Kurose wrote.
"Good" Shinso said "Trustworthy" Kurose looked at him.
"You two are not rebranding my feedback system without paperwork" If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. Ren almost smiled. Almost. The count continued.
"Todoroki Shoto. Intake hall. Alive. Minor smoke exposure""Yaoyorozu Momo. Intake hall. Alive. Quirk fatigue mild-moderate""Kirishima Eijiro. Decontam observation. Alive. Laceration and impact bruising""Sero Hanta. Decontam observation. Alive. Irritant exposure and tape burns""Kaminari Denki. Medical bay three. Alive. Irritant exposure, Quirk fatigue""Kota. Guardian-adjacent protective holding with Mandalay. Alive. No major injury" The hallway went very quiet at that. Alive. No major injury.
No category could hold what had happened to him. Then the staff count.
"Mandalay. Active. Protective holding""Tiger. Active. Medical support and debrief pending""Pixie-Bob. Active. Perimeter debrief pending""Aizawa Shota. Active. Injury check pending" A pause. Too long. Everyone knew.
"Ragdoll. Missing. Confirmed hostile capture likely. Recovery investigation active" Mandalay's cry came from somewhere down the corridor. It was short. Stopped. That made it worse. Ren's hands heated. Moderate. He reported before anyone asked.
"Ragdoll count trigger. Palms moderate. No image. No lattice. Failure association" Kurose stepped closer.
"Correction" Ren looked down.
"I am not responsible for data I did not have before I had it""Again""I am not responsible for data I did not have before I had it" Shinso said quietly "Again" Ren looked at him. Shinso's eyes were on the floor.
"Again" he said Ren breathed.
"I am not responsible for data I did not have before I had it" The heat lowered. Not gone. Lower. Recovery Girl appeared in the doorway.
"Good. Hate it later. Repeat it now" Ren nodded. She looked at Shinso.
"You. Voice rest" Shinso said "This is important""Then be important quietly" He closed his mouth. She turned to Kurose.
"Midoriya will be moved to advanced care. Not conscious enough for visitors. Kota wants to see him. Mandalay asked whether a visual confirmation from outside the room is possible" Kurose's face tightened.
"Can it be done safely?"
"Yes. Ten seconds. No touch. Glass only. He needs to see breathing or he will invent worse" Ren looked toward the hallway. Kota. Not his door. But the count had lines that needed eyes. Recovery Girl saw the thought forming.
"No. You do not go""I did not ask""You thought loudly" Shinso made a small sound. Recovery Girl looked at him.
"Voice rest includes not laughing" His face returned to blankness by force. Ren said "Status. Kota visual request trigger. No heat. No action""Good" Recovery Girl said "Keep it that way" She left. The room felt smaller after her. Not because she was gone. Because she took motion with her. For ten minutes, nothing happened to Ren. That was its own kind of test. The hallway moved. Staff passed. Parents spoke in briefing rooms. Students made calls in controlled intervals. Police arrived behind closed doors.
The public statement remained pending. Every few minutes, someone said no small objects in a new context, and the phrase became less absurd and more frightening. Ren sat. Shinso sat. Kurose stood. The room held him, and he hated being held by architecture. Finally, Hana and Daichi returned. Not into the room at first. To the glass. They stood on the other side after the security check, both stripped of loose items again. Hana's hair had come loose around her face.
Daichi looked older than he had that morning, though that was impossible because that morning had been a different era. Bentaro was not with him this time. It had been left in guardian storage. Hana placed one hand on the glass. Ren's palms warmed. No heat spike. Just recognition. Kurose opened the intercom.
"Controlled contact through glass first" Hana nodded without looking at her.
"Status?" she asked Ren answered.
"Yellow-red. Palms warm. No lattice. Count completed for students. Ragdoll missing. I am still under target protocol" Her eyes closed at target protocol. Daichi's jaw tightened at Ragdoll missing. He asked "Are you eating?" Ren blinked. Shinso looked at the ceiling. Kurose wrote something. Ren said "Not yet. Medical intake and debrief came first" Hana opened her eyes.
"Food before becoming symbolic""I know" Recovery Girl's voice came from the hall.
"He will eat" Hana turned slightly.
"Good" Daichi looked through the glass at Shinso.
"You too" Shinso froze.
"I had camp breakfast" Daichi's face did not change.
"That was before attack" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren said "He is correct""I hate this family" Hana's mouth trembled. Then steadied.
"Alive enough to hate us is acceptable" Shinso looked down.
"Trustworthy" Ren felt something in his chest crack and hold at the same time. The door opened after a second scan. Hana and Daichi entered with empty hands. Again, they asked before touching him. Again, Ren said yes. Again, the hug was careful. This time, Hana did not cry while holding him. She shook instead. Daichi stood behind her with one hand on Ren's shoulder, light enough that Ren could step away if needed and firm enough that he knew he was not expected to.
Hana whispered near his ear "I want to take you home" Ren closed his eyes.
"I know""I know I can't""I know""I hate knowing""So do I" She pulled back and looked at his hands.
"Warm?"
"Yes""Pain?"
"Mild""Fear?" He swallowed.
"Yes""Good" He almost laughed. She touched his face with both hands after checking that she could.
"Fear is allowed to come home too" That was worse. Better. Worse. Daichi said "What is the next route?" Practical. Good. Ren looked at Kurose. She answered.
"Ren remains overnight in secured observation. Guardians may remain on campus in assigned guardian holding if approved. No home release tonight. Tomorrow's status depends on medical, police, and security review" Hana said "We remain" Daichi said "Obviously" Kurose nodded.
"Expected" Ren looked down.
"Sorry" All three adults reacted at once. Hana said "No" Daichi said "No sorry before alive" Kurose said "Do not apologize for other people attacking children" The room held the correction. Ren whispered "Accepted" Shinso muttered "Barely" Ren looked at him. Shinso looked back.
"Trustworthy" Hana's eyes moved between them. Something in her expression softened, then hurt. She looked at Shinso.
"Do you have guardians here?" The room sharpened. Shinso's face closed. Not dramatically. Efficiently.
"U. A. contacted the required parties" That answered nothing and everything. Hana heard both.
"Do you have someone waiting?" Kurose's pen stopped. Ren did not speak. Not his door. Shinso's fingers tightened on his knees.
"No" The word was flat. Too flat. Hana inhaled. Daichi's face changed. Not pity. Recognition of a missing line in a count. Hana said "Then when allowed, you sit with us" Shinso's eyes snapped up.
"That is not necessary""I did not ask if necessary""Hana" Kurose said gently Hana looked at her.
"Protocol?"
"Guardian holding rules are strict. Non-family contact requires authorization""Then authorize it if appropriate. Do not if not. But he heard the offer" Shinso looked away.
"Soup is not a contract" Hana's voice softened.
"No. Neither is a chair" The room went silent. Ren felt his eyes burn. Shinso's face went very still. Then he said "Status. Yellow-red. Social debt spike. No Quirk pressure. Wanting to refuse before wanting to accept. Not answering yet" Kurose wrote. Daichi nodded as if this was a normal dinner table.
"Good report" Shinso looked like he might dissolve. Ren said softly "Trustworthy" Shinso glared at him. Weakly.
"Shut up""Voice rest" Recovery Girl shouted from the hall. Shinso closed his mouth. Hana and Daichi stayed for eight minutes. Not enough. Too much. They were sent to guardian holding with promises of scheduled updates, which everyone knew were not promises of comfort. Hana left a sentence behind because she could not leave a card.
"Stay visible, but stay yours" Ren repeated it after the door sealed.
"Stay visible, but stay mine" Kurose wrote it down.
"Good""Trustworthy" Shinso corrected. Kurose looked at him. He closed his mouth before Recovery Girl could manifest again. Food came at 20: 30. It arrived in sealed containers inspected twice and opened by staff. Ren ate under observation because target protocol had turned even dinner into logistics. Shinso ate because Hana's absence had somehow made refusal more dangerous than compliance. Kurose ate standing until Recovery Girl entered, looked at her, and said "Sit before becoming symbolic" Kurose sat.
Ren stared at her. Recovery Girl pointed at him with a spoon.
"Do not make that face. Your mother is correct often enough to be medically inconvenient" Ren almost smiled. This time, it happened. Small. Tired. There. Shinso saw it and said nothing. Trustworthy. The second count happened after dinner. Not the official count. The student-to-student count. It began accidentally when Kaminari's voice came through the hallway from medical bay three.
"Jiro?"
"Here" Jiro answered from the bench outside A pause.
"Kirishima?"
"Here" Kirishima called from decontam observation"Sero?"
"Here, coughing artistically""Kaminari, stop yelling" Recovery Girl snapped Kaminari lowered his voice.
"Bakugo?" A silence. Then Bakugo's door opened somewhere down the hall.
"What?" Kaminari's voice was smaller.
"Just checking" Another silence. Then Bakugo said "Here, dumbass" No one laughed. Or maybe everyone did, too quietly to count. Kirishima called "Midoriya?" The hallway went still. Too still. No answer from Midoriya. Of course. He was unconscious or sedated or in too much pain. Then Kota's voice came from near the trauma corridor.
"He's here" Small. Angry. Holding the line.
"He's breathing" Uraraka made a sound that was almost a sob. Iida said "Thank you, Kota" Kota said "I'm not doing it for you" Asui answered "That is okay" Ren sat in observation room one and listened. The count moved.
"Todoroki?"
"Here""Yaoyorozu?"
"Here""Tokoyami?"
"Here""Shoji?"
"Here""Asui?"
"Here""Uraraka?"
"Here""Iida?"
"Here" Then Shinso, unexpectedly, raised his voice just enough.
"Akiyama?" Ren looked at him. The room waited. Ren answered.
"Here" Shinso nodded. Then from down the hall, Bakugo's voice cut in.
"Don't start a damn roll call without finishing it. Shinso?" Shinso froze. The hallway froze. Shinso's throat moved.
"Here" Bakugo said "Good. Now shut up" Kaminari whispered "That was emotionally supportive" Bakugo shouted "I said shut up!" Recovery Girl shouted "All of you shut up!" The student count ended there. It was ridiculous. It was necessary. Ren looked at his chart. The line wrote itself. The count came home in pieces. He added: Some pieces answered for those who could not. Kurose read it. Her expression softened by one degree.
"Trustworthy" Shinso whispered "See? Rebranding" Kurose did not deny it. Later, when the hallway quieted and guardian holding dimmed its lights and the news vans beyond U. A.' s gates multiplied like insects around a wound, Ren lay on the secured observation bed under monitoring. No loose objects. No small items. No privacy. No home. Alive. He had repeated the correction seven times. I am not responsible for data I did not have before I had it. It still felt false.
Maybe repetition did not create belief immediately. Maybe it only made a path belief could use later. Shinso had been moved to a nearby monitored room after renewed consent ended for the night. Not far. Not present. Still counted. Hana and Daichi were somewhere on campus. Not home. Still close enough that the building felt less like a sealed box. Ragdoll was not on campus. The count had come home. It had not come whole. Ren opened his chart one last time under the dim medical light. He wrote: Second count.
Student voices. Midoriya answered by Kota. Shinso counted. Bakugo remained visible and angry. Parents on campus. No home release. No Scar Tissue activation. No hidden heat. Then the final line. The count came home in pieces, and one piece is still in enemy hands. He stared at it until the letters blurred. Then he closed the chart. His palms were cool. For the first time since the smoke became real, his palms were cool. That did not mean safe. Secured was not safe. Home was not whole.
But the room with locks had heard every name it could. And somewhere beyond the locks, one missing name remained loud enough to keep them all awake.
