The city ended by degrees. At first, it was only buildings lowering their shoulders. Tall offices became apartment blocks. Apartment blocks became small houses. Small houses became shops with shuttered fronts, fields behind train lines, roads that curved without asking permission from grids. Then the bus climbed, and the air changed. Ren noticed before the scenery did. Less exhaust. More green. Damp soil somewhere beyond the sealed windows.
A faint pressure at the base of his skull that was not quite memory and not quite fear. He did not wait for it to become impressive.
"Yellow. Environmental shift. No heat. No image. Smell association possible" Kurose looked back from the staff seat.
"Logged" Shinso, across the aisle and one row behind, lifted his eyes from his phone.
"Status stable?"
"Yellow stable""Good enough" Ren nodded. The bus kept moving. Students had been loud for the first hour, then less loud after Aizawa looked down the aisle once, then loud again in smaller pockets after Kaminari discovered that whispering in a moving bus created the illusion of secrecy. It did not. Aizawa heard everything. Kurose heard the things Aizawa ignored. Iida attempted to maintain aisle discipline until Uraraka gently told him that people breathing in seats did not require route correction.
Midoriya held his single notebook closed with both hands as if it might escape. Bakugo had spent most of the ride staring out the window and occasionally telling Kirishima not to interpret mountains emotionally. Ren had written one line early. The morning moved and I moved with it.
Then Kurose had looked at him through the gap between seats, and he had closed the notebook before one line became a field report, a field report became a pattern analysis, and a pattern analysis became a way to leave the bus before arriving. Movement did not require documentation to be real. Annoying. Useful. The road narrowed. Trees appeared properly now. Not decorative roadside trees. Forest. Tall trunks. Dense undergrowth. Slopes layered in shadow. Sunlight broken into strips across leaves.
The kind of green that did not care who had signed which form. Ren's right palm warmed. Mild. Immediate. He opened his hand on his knee.
"Yellow-red. Forest visual trigger. Mild right palm heat. No image. No new detail. Continuing seated" Kurose stood and moved down the aisle with a tablet already in hand. Recovery Girl's remote check-in opened on the screen. Her face appeared, sharp and displeased by distance.
"Heat level""Mild. Decreasing after report""Location in body""Right palm. No forearm. No bilateral""Image?"
"No. Only forest visual trigger""Urge?"
"Observe. Speculate. No movement urge""Action""Report. Remain seated. No speculation. Continue arrival" Recovery Girl nodded once.
"That is stable behavior" The bus went quieter around him. Not silent. Students were trying not to listen and failing because a bus had no privacy and everyone had learned too much to pretend status reports were background noise. Bakugo muttered from the back "At least the trees are getting paperwork" Aizawa said "Bakugo""What? I didn't say anything about him""You said enough" Ren said "It was accurate" The bus went still. Bakugo turned.
"What?" Ren looked back over the seat.
"The trees are getting paperwork. That is accurate" Shinso covered his mouth. Kaminari whispered "Did Akiyama just validate Bakugo?" Kirishima whispered "Historic" Aizawa closed his eyes. Kurose wrote something. Bakugo stared at Ren as if he had been attacked.
"Don't agree with me like that" Ren turned forward.
"Noted" Shinso murmured "Social heat?"
"No""Pity" The right palm heat faded. Ren logged it. The forest remained. It did not apologize for that. The buses turned off the main road onto a private mountain route. Kurose stood at the front.
"Arrival protocol begins now. Bags remain overhead until instructed. No one stands before full stop. No windows opened. Conditional candidates remain seated after general disembarkation until staff check" Kaminari raised a hand halfway. Aizawa said "No""I didn't ask""You were going to""I was going to ask if bathroom counts as conditional""No""I was not""Yes you were" Sero whispered "You were" Kaminari sank back into his seat. The road climbed. Then opened.
The buses stopped at a wide overlook cut into the side of the mountain. The view appeared all at once through the windows. A valley of trees stretched below them, dense and bright under the afternoon sun. Far beyond, on a lower ridge, a lodge complex sat among green slopes, its roofs barely visible between trees. A road curved away somewhere behind the overlook and vanished. The forest between the overlook and the lodge looked too wide to be scenic and too beautiful to be trusted. Ren stared. His palm stayed cool.
Good. His stomach did not. That was not medical yet. Just recognition. The bus doors opened. Fresh air entered. Forest. Soil. Leaves. Heat from the road. Something floral. Something damp. Something alive enough not to care that U. A. had categories. Ren inhaled. No heat. Kurose's eyes found him. He nodded once. Status stable. Aizawa stood.
"Hero Course. Bags stay. Exit in assigned order" Groans rose immediately.
"Bags stay?" Kaminari said"That sounds bad" Sero said Mina pressed her face near the window.
"Why does that view look like a threat?" Bakugo stood.
"Because it's far" Kirishima grinned.
"Mountain training! That's manly!" Aizawa looked at him.
"You may regret that word""I already do a little" Students filed off the bus. Ren remained seated. Shinso remained seated. A few other conditional or support-observer students remained too, but most of the bus emptied into noise, sunlight, and mountain air. Ren watched through the window. The Wild Wild Pussycats were waiting. Pixie-Bob stood on a rock near the overlook with theatrical energy practically radiating from her body. Mandalay stood beside her, calm and composed. Ragdoll waved with both hands.
Tiger stood near the edge of the road with arms crossed and the posture of someone who could carry three students under each arm if needed. A small boy stood near Mandalay, unimpressed by everything. Kota. Ren did not know him. Not in story. Not yet. Still, something flickered. Water. A child looking down. A hero name on a memorial? No. Too vague. No heat. He reported softly.
"Yellow. Child-associated fragment pressure possible. No image stable. No heat. No action" Kurose moved one step closer.
"Logged. Continue seated" Shinso looked through the window.
"Which child?"
"Near Mandalay. Red cap" Shinso looked.
"Do I report staff?"
"Already staff present. Low. No action" Kurose nodded.
"Correct" Outside, Pixie-Bob lifted both arms.
"Welcome, kittens!" Several Hero Course students froze. Bakugo looked personally offended by the sky. Kaminari whispered something Ren could not hear, but Sero nearly laughed and Iida looked scandalized, so it was probably not academically useful. Mandalay spoke next, voice carrying with practiced ease.
"This training camp will test terrain awareness, endurance, Quirk control, rescue coordination, decision-making under fatigue, and group discipline. You will be separated by approved training categories. Follow staff instructions exactly" Pixie-Bob's grin sharpened.
"For standard Hero Course route candidates, your first task is simple" The forest seemed to lean closer.
"Reach the lodge" Silence. Then noise.
"What?" Kaminari shouted Mina pointed at the distant roofs.
"That lodge?" Sero said "That is not a walk" Kirishima brightened.
"That is definitely training" Bakugo smiled. Finally. Mandalay lifted one hand.
"Standard Hero Course groups will take a supervised terrain route through Beast Forest. Staff will monitor. You have until evening" Beast Forest. The words entered the bus. Ren's palm stayed cool. Interesting. The name was dramatic enough to be less dangerous than ordinary forest lodge had been. Maybe because drama belonged to staff, not fragments. Pixie-Bob looked toward the bus.
"Conditional and modified-route candidates remain under Kurose-sensei and Aizawa-sensei's instructions. Do not improvise unless you want Recovery Girl to hear about it before dinner" Recovery Girl's tablet, still in Kurose's hand, said "I am already hearing" Pixie-Bob's ears twitched.
"Scary medical kitten" Ren closed his eyes. Shinso whispered "She has range""Unfortunately" Aizawa turned back into the bus.
"Akiyama. Shinso. Remain seated until standard route departure. Then disembark for arrival check" Ren nodded. The Hero Course group outside was already reacting. Midoriya looked at the forest with terror and awe braided together. Bakugo looked like someone had finally offered him a problem he could punch without being told to use gentle body angles. Iida's entire body was screaming about route discipline. Uraraka tightened her gloves. Todoroki looked at the trees with quiet calculation.
Yaoyorozu was already assessing supplies they were not allowed to access. Kirishima was vibrating with readiness. Kaminari was calculating regret. Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit. Mandalay explained the rules. No leaving assigned path. No unsupervised separation. No excessive property damage beyond training constructs. No attacking staff. No forcing someone else to carry your bag because bags were staying on buses and would be transported.
The last part revived Kaminari emotionally. Then the ground changed. Pixie-Bob pressed both hands to the earth. The forest below moved. Not the whole forest. Earth rose in sections, paths shifting, training constructs forming among the trees. Beast shapes emerged from soil and stone, large enough to be obstacles, controlled enough to be exercises, animated by her Quirk with delighted brutality. Several students screamed. Bakugo laughed. Ren's chest tightened. Not heat. Observation hunger. The route was a problem.
A beautiful, terrible, large-scale problem. Terrain, moving hazards, fatigue, rescue potential, team distribution, visibility, sound distortion, possible group splitting, Quirk overuse, route failure, injury cascades. His mind began building maps. He stopped. Report.
"Yellow-high. Analysis pull. No heat. Wanting to map standard route. Not my role" Kurose nodded.
"Action?"
"Do not analyze route beyond conditional relevance""Good" Shinso leaned back.
"I also want to watch""That is allowed""I want to be irritated at not going""That is also allowed" Kurose said "Both logged if useful" Shinso sighed. Outside, Aizawa gave the standard group one final look.
"If you treat this like a game, you will fail before lunch" Kaminari whispered "It is after lunch" Aizawa's eyes moved. Kaminari straightened.
"Yes sir" Mandalay gave the signal. The Hero Course students launched into the terrain route. Not all at once. That would have been chaos. But almost. Bakugo blasted forward first, of course, until Aizawa's scarf snapped near his shoulder and forced him to adjust his path without stopping.
"Assigned group" Aizawa said Bakugo shouted something unsuitable and slowed enough for Kirishima and Sero to catch him. Midoriya moved with Iida and Uraraka, eyes wide, One For All low and careful. Good. Too careful? Maybe. Not Ren's role. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu took a different segment with Tokoyami and Tsuyu. Todoroki used ice sparingly at first, likely watching ground stability. Yaoyorozu looked relieved to have terrain data and alarmed by the volume of it.
Tsuyu looked as if forest routes were merely weather with legs. The first earth beast rose from below. Noise exploded. The students disappeared into trees. The bus felt suddenly empty. Ren's hands were open on his knees. No heat. Something else. Loss? No. Exclusion. Yes. Also relief. He reported.
"Yellow. Watching standard group depart. Exclusion and relief. No heat. Analysis pull decreasing" Kurose wrote.
"Stable" Shinso looked out the window.
"They get Beast Forest""We get arrival protocol""Sounds less marketable""Yes""Probably less likely to kill us""That is the intent" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"I hate that intent is correct""So do I" Aizawa climbed back into the bus.
"Now conditional group. Bags remain until staff unload. Akiyama first. Status before standing" Ren sat straighter.
"Yellow. No heat. No image. Mild disappointment. Stable""Stand" He stood. No dizziness. He stepped into the aisle. Shinso remained seated until Aizawa looked at him.
"Status""Yellow. Irritation. Disappointment. Personal want present. No Quirk pressure""Stand" They disembarked into the mountain air. The first breath outside was worse than seeing it through glass. The forest entered completely. Damp earth. Leaves. Sun-warmed bark. Distant shouts from students already deep enough in the training route to sound smaller. A branch cracked somewhere below. Ren's right palm warmed. Mild. He stopped on the bus step. Aizawa stopped behind him without touching.
Kurose, beside the door, lifted the tablet.
"Report""Yellow-red. Branch crack auditory trigger. Mild right palm heat. No image. No new detail. Standing on bus step. Request pause before full disembark" Recovery Girl's voice came through.
"Pause granted. Heat trend?"
"Stable mild""Breath" Ren breathed. Once. Twice. The air smelled like forest. The branch crack did not repeat. The palm heat faded one degree.
"Heat decreasing. Continue?" Kurose asked "Your call within protocol" Ren looked at the ground below the bus step. Road. Not forest floor. Road. Safe zone. Staff present. Aizawa behind. Shinso waiting. Kurose beside.
"I continue""Step down" He did. The road held. Of course it did. His body had still needed proof. Shinso descended after him. No comment. Good. Pixie-Bob appeared in front of them with far too much energy for a person who had just launched half a class into a mountain.
"Here are my conditional kittens!" Ren froze. Shinso's face emptied. Aizawa said "Pixie-Bob""What? It's affectionate!" Kurose said "Use candidate names" Pixie-Bob pouted for exactly half a second, then snapped upright.
"Akiyama Ren. Shinso Hitoshi. Welcome to camp" Ren bowed slightly.
"Thank you" Shinso said "Thank you" Mandalay approached with Kota beside her. The boy looked at the conditional group, then at the buses, then at the distant forest where students were shouting and fighting earth beasts. His expression said he had already judged all of them and found the result unimpressive. Mandalay smiled politely.
"This is Kota. He will be around the lodge area. Do not involve him in training" Kota's eyes narrowed.
"I don't need telling" Aizawa said "Good. Then you can comply efficiently" Kota blinked. Shinso looked away, shoulders shaking once. Ren looked at the boy and felt that faint pressure again. Water. Loss. Hero parents? No clear image. No heat. He reported softly.
"Yellow. Kota association low. No heat. Possible grief-related fragment pressure. No action" Mandalay's expression shifted. Kurose wrote. Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Kota scowled.
"What are you whispering about?" Ren answered carefully.
"Status reporting. Not about you for action" Kota stared.
"That means it was about me" Ren did not deny. Mandalay placed one hand near Kota's shoulder, not touching. Kurose said "Akiyama has a reporting protocol for safety. No one is asking you to participate" Kota looked between them. His scowl deepened.
"Heroes are weird" Then he turned and walked away toward the lodge path. Mandalay sighed.
"He is not part of training" Ren nodded.
"Understood" Shinso whispered "Child has excellent defensive hostility" Ren said "Recognized" Aizawa said "Do not collect children with defensive hostility" Both of them looked at him. Aizawa looked back.
"I know how this starts" Kurose's mouth almost moved. Ren decided not to think about how Shinso stood beside him at all times now. The conditional group's arrival protocol began immediately. No dramatic route. No Beast Forest. No earth monsters. They walked along the service road toward a small observation platform halfway between overlook and lodge, under staff escort. Their bags would be transported by vehicle. They would complete orientation, status check, and first hazard mapping from a safe zone.
Ren walked on pavement while distant students fought through trees below. The contrast hurt. Not sharply. Dully. Like pressing on a bruise through fabric. He reported at the first scheduled stop.
"Yellow. Disappointment. Relief. No heat. Standard group audible. Analysis pull moderate. Role remembered" Kurose nodded.
"Action?"
"Observe assigned safe route. No standard-route mapping""Good" Shinso reported next.
"Yellow. Disappointment. Irritation. Wanting to say I could handle more. No Quirk pressure. Not saying it as argument" Aizawa said "You just said it""As report""Acceptable" Pixie-Bob led them to the observation platform and gestured dramatically.
"From here, modified-route candidates can observe terrain features without entering the Beast Forest route. Still useful. Still training. Less screaming" A distant scream rose from below. Kaminari, probably. Pixie-Bob pointed.
"See? Less" Mandalay gave a professional explanation of the visible terrain. Slope angles. Tree density. Sound distortion. Soil variation. Animal paths. Emergency access trails. Staff movement routes. Lodge location. Weather risks. Visibility after dusk. Ren listened. This was his role. Not the route he wanted. The route he had. He opened his notebook with permission and wrote only three categories. Hazard. Call. Support. Hazard: sound distortion through trees. Call: confirm visual before acting on voice.
Support: Mandalay telepathic communication available? Ask constraints. He raised a hand. Mandalay nodded.
"Question?"
"Your communication Quirk. Range and privacy limitations for camp safety?" Mandalay's expression sharpened with interest.
"Good question. I can send telepathic messages within a wide range, but I cannot receive thoughts. I need line-of-knowledge, not line-of-sight, for most practical purposes, but terrain and distance can affect timing. I can broadcast to groups or individuals, but students should not treat it as replacement for reporting. If you are lost or hurt, you still use your device and voice if possible" Ren wrote.
"Thank you" Pixie-Bob leaned toward Kurose.
"Tiny serious kitt—" Kurose looked at her.
"Akiyama""Akiyama. Very serious" Ren wrote: Supervisor corrected naming after prompt. Shinso whispered "Coward. Record the kitten""No""History will suffer" The first modified drill was simple. Too simple. Ren had to stand on the observation platform, identify three hazards in the visible route, give one compressed call for each, and identify which staff or student support role would handle the issue. Hazard one: loose soil on slope. Call: slow before descent, one at a time, no carrying until footing tested.
Support: Iida route discipline or staff terrain lead. Hazard two: sound distortion from ravine. Call: confirm visual before responding to voice from below. Support: Mandalay communication clarification. Hazard three: hidden branch fall near narrow path. The branch. His palm warmed. Mild. He reported immediately.
"Yellow-red. Branch hazard trigger. Mild right palm heat. No image. Continuing verbally" Kurose said "Continue only if stable" Ren breathed. The branch crack in memory. No image. No smoke. No hand. He looked at the visible terrain. Real branch. Real hazard. Not prophecy.
"Call" Mandalay prompted gently Ren answered.
"Pause before narrow path. Look up and down. Move one at a time. Do not assume ground hazard is only hazard" Kurose nodded.
"Support?"
"Yaoyorozu or Kenta for sequence and load if present. Staff terrain lead if route active. I do not enter" Recovery Girl's tablet voice said "Good" The heat faded. Modified drill complete. Pass-level. No applause. Good. Below, explosions echoed through the forest. Bakugo. Then ice rose in a distant line. Todoroki. Then a green flash through trees. Midoriya. Ren's analysis pull surged.
"Yellow-high. Standard route visual triggers. No heat. Wanting to track Hero Course progress" Kurose said "Action""Eyes away for ten seconds" He turned. The lodge stood behind them in the distance, closer now. Wooden walls. Wide roof. Training grounds. Safe zone. Or safer. Nothing in the mountains was safe because people kept bringing students there. Shinso stepped into his line of sight. Not blocking. Just present.
"Status stable?"
"Yes""You look like you want to run a tactical overlay on their entire route""Yes""Do not""I am not""Good enough" The second modified drill belonged to Shinso. Aizawa took him aside to a marked path near the platform. No Quirk use. Only movement and assistance request under terrain uncertainty. Shinso had to cross a low obstacle route while Mandalay used projected sounds to simulate misleading voices from trees. He had to keep moving, request route confirmation, and not chase voices without visual confirmation.
The first false voice called "This way!" Shinso stopped. Good. Then did not move. Not good. Aizawa said nothing. Ren watched from the platform, hands open. No prompting. Shinso's jaw tightened. He looked at the path, not the voice.
"I need visual confirmation left route" Aizawa said "From who?" Shinso's face twisted.
"Mandalay-san, confirm left route" Mandalay smiled.
"Left route clear" Shinso moved. Good. The second voice sounded like someone hurt. He stopped faster. This time, he said "Unverified distress call. Holding position. Request staff direction" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Shinso looked offended by success. Ren wrote nothing. This was Shinso's. After the modified drills, conditional candidates were escorted to the lodge while standard Hero Course continued through Beast Forest. They arrived by road. Clean. Unheroic. Efficient. Ren hated the relief. The lodge was warm inside, all wood, open space, practical furniture, and the smell of cooking somewhere deeper in the building. Their bags waited in a supervised corner. Staff checked them in.
Rooms would be assigned later after the standard route group arrived. Conditional candidates would rest, complete arrival report, and prepare for indoor tabletop before dinner. Arrival report. Ren sat at a long table with his chart. Arrival: completed. Forest visual trigger: mild heat, reported, resolved. Branch auditory trigger: mild heat, reported, resolved. Kota association: low pressure, no heat, no action. Modified drill: completed. Emotional state: yellow, disappointment and relief.
Role adherence: maintained. Compensation urge: moderate, not acted on. Action: rest before tabletop. He looked at compensation urge. Then added: Wanted Beast Forest route. Did not request it. That line hurt. Good. Trustworthy data. Kurose read the report.
"Strong" Not pretty. Strong. Ren accepted the word. Shinso's report included: Wanted to say standard route looked manageable. Did not. False distress voice affected movement. Requested staff direction. Soup debt absent, camp food pending. Kurose read it.
"Why camp food pending?" Shinso looked at the table.
"If the food is good, emotional complications may arise" Aizawa, passing behind him, said "Report honestly""I am" Mandalay, overhearing, smiled.
"The food is good" Shinso went very still. Ren said "Status?"
"Yellow. Future social debt threat" Kurose wrote.
"Noted" The standard route group arrived near evening. Loudly. Exhausted. Filthy. Alive. Kaminari looked as if he had personally negotiated with death and lost several minor arguments. Sero had leaves in his hair. Kirishima looked delighted and bruised. Uraraka was dirty and grinning with the unstable relief of someone who had been terrified and competent. Iida looked exhausted but pleased by route completion. Yaoyorozu was mud-splattered and mentally cataloging failures.
Todoroki had dirt on one side of his face and seemed unsure whether to remove it immediately or respect its educational value. Midoriya looked like he wanted to write thirty pages and sleep for ten years. Bakugo looked energized, filthy, and annoyed that he had been forced to remain with his group enough to count as teamwork. Ren stood in the lodge entrance with the conditional group. Not waiting like a healer. Not a staff member. A student who had arrived differently. Uraraka saw him first.
"You're here!" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Kaminari staggered past.
"Road people. You are geniuses" Shinso said "We are legally restricted""Still geniuses" Bakugo stopped near Ren and looked him over.
"Didn't explode from trees?" Ren opened one hand.
"Reported two triggers. No activation" Bakugo grunted. Then looked toward the road.
"Must've been boring" Ren met his eyes.
"Yes" Something in Bakugo's expression shifted. Not sympathy. Recognition of a different kind of hard. He clicked his tongue.
"Figures" Then walked past. Midoriya approached more carefully.
"Was it okay?" Ren considered.
"No" Midoriya's face fell. Ren added "It was correct" Midoriya nodded slowly.
"That makes sense""It was boring and hard and useful" Uraraka smiled.
"That also makes sense" Iida arrived beside them.
"Boring and hard and useful may describe much of responsible training" Shinso said "That sentence should be on a brochure" Todoroki, overhearing, said "No one would attend" Yaoyorozu said "The correct students might" Bakugo shouted from inside "Stop making dirt philosophical!" Mandalay called everyone to dinner. Camp's first meal was loud enough to drown most thoughts. Almost. Students ate like the Beast Forest had personally stolen from them.
Conditional candidates ate like people who had done less physical work and more emotional accounting, which was also tiring but less visible. Staff ate like adults who knew this was day one and therefore no one was allowed to believe the hard part had passed. Kota appeared briefly at the edge of the dining hall, looked at the room full of aspiring heroes, and scowled. Midoriya noticed him. Ren noticed Midoriya noticing. No. Not his door. He looked down at his food. Kota association low. No heat. No action.
No need to report aloud. Not every flicker needed a room if it stayed below threshold and had already been logged. After dinner, indoor tabletop began for conditional candidates while standard route students were sent to wash and recover. Ren almost laughed. The Hero Course students fought earth beasts and got showers. He got tabletop. Thirteen led it. Scenario: lodge kitchen fire during storm. Limited visibility. Mixed mobility. One child unaccounted for. Communication interference.
Conditional role: hazard map support from main hall. Child unaccounted for. Kota. Water. Parents. No heat. Pressure. Ren reported.
"Yellow. Child-unaccounted trigger. No heat. Kota association possible. Continuing tabletop" Thirteen nodded.
"Thank you. First call?" Ren looked at the map. Kitchen fire. Storm. Child missing. Communication interference. His body wanted to turn the map into a chase. He stayed seated.
"Confirm last known location before search. Assign one staff to exits. No student solo search. Smoke route first. Child may hide away from heroes, so search likely should include nonthreatening adult or known guardian" Mandalay, standing near the wall, went still. Kurose wrote. Thirteen said "Good" The tabletop continued. Ren did not know Kota's story. Not fully. He did not need to. The map needed care. Not ownership. At the end of the tabletop, Thirteen marked the exercise pass-level.
Ren accepted that without flinching. Mostly. That night, rooms were assigned. Ren shared with other conditional male students, Shinso included, with staff rooms close enough that Aizawa could materialize if someone breathed suspiciously. Hero Course rooms were separate. Bakugo complained loudly somewhere down the hall. Kaminari complained about soreness. Iida attempted to enforce lights-out structure and was ignored until Aizawa's voice ended the debate from somewhere unseen.
Ren sat on his futon and completed the final chart entry. Day one camp arrival. Travel completed. Forest triggers reported and resolved. Modified drills completed. Standard route exclusion painful but accepted. No Scar Tissue activation. No unreported heat. Kota association logged low. Role maintained. He paused. Then added: I arrived by road. That still counts as arriving. Shinso, from the next futon, leaned over.
"Good line" Ren looked at him.
"Thank you""No sarcasm because I am too tired""Good enough" Shinso closed his eyes.
"Food was good" Ren waited. Shinso sighed.
"Social debt trigger moderate. Also genuine appreciation. I hate camp" Ren almost smiled. Almost. Outside, the forest made night sounds. Branches. Insects. Wind. Nothing cracked loudly. No smoke. No hand. No heat. Not safe. Never safe. But for tonight, the lodge walls held. The road had counted. The first day had not required the forest to accept him as proof. Ren placed the family card under his pillow. Food before becoming symbolic. Route can hold one step at a time. He closed his eyes.
Somewhere beyond the lodge, the Beast Forest settled after being used as lesson, obstacle, and spectacle. Somewhere farther still, outside U. A.' s careful routes and hidden protocols, people who did not care about consent waited for better timing. Ren did not know. Not tonight. Tonight, he knew only this: He had arrived differently. He had arrived anyway. And the route back was still part of the route.
