Chương 152: Durability Is Boring

The next morning, the board was offensively calm. RECOVERY AND PRECISION DAY Under it, Aizawa had written: NO FULL MOCKNO HEROIC COMPENSATIONNO PROVING YOU ARE FINEBORING IS TRAINING Kaminari stared at the final line with deep suspicion.
"Boring is training sounds like something adults invented after losing a fight with fun" Aizawa stood beside the board holding a thermos and the expression of a man who had won several fights with fun by refusing to attend them.
"Correct" Kaminari blinked.
"You admit it?"
"Yes""That makes it worse" Jiro looked at the board and then at the class.
"I hate that I am relieved" Sero nodded.
"I am relieved and offended" Mina raised her hand.
"Can we have emotionally colorful boring?" Kurose, standing near the window with a folder that looked thinner than yesterday's but somehow more dangerous, said "No" Mina lowered her hand.
"Oppressed by beige" Todoroki looked at the board.
"Boring can be durable" Bakugo turned his head slowly.
"Do not start" Todoroki looked genuinely confused.
"I thought that was the lesson""It is. That is why you should not say it like tea" Todoroki considered.
"Tea can be durable" Bakugo looked at Aizawa.
"Make him stop" Aizawa sipped from his thermos.
"No" Kirishima whispered "This is the recovery part" Bakugo snapped "You are all damage" The class was not in Gym Gamma. That was the first strange thing. They were in the common room. No target vests. No foam rubble. No H. U. C. actors. No buckets. The bucket remained in storage under what Kaminari called "protective custody" and Kurose called "peace" Class 1-A sat around low tables with water, breakfast, recovery sheets, and body-map templates.
Ren attended through audio only for the first half hour from his room because Recovery Girl had declared that cameras were not required for existing. Shinso sat at the edge table with barley tea, his small board folded beside him. The exam date remained on the common board. September 2. Below it: PASSABLE MEANS THE DOOR EXISTSNOT THAT YOU RUN THROUGH IT Someone had added during the night: DURABILITY HAS REST DAYS No one had admitted it. Aizawa tapped the first board.
"Yesterday you were passable. Today you prove nothing" The room went quiet. That sentence had too much aim. Midoriya's hands stopped moving on his notebook. Bakugo's jaw tightened. Uraraka looked down. Iida breathed out. Ren's audio clicked on.
"Suspicious instruction" Aizawa looked at the speaker.
"Map" Ren answered without delay.
"Ren's room. desk. audio only. breakfast finished. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. tired. no gate. map present" Recovery Girl's voice came through after him.
"He did not lie about tired. Mark the day" Kaminari whispered "Medical holiday" Jiro whispered "Do not make his honesty festive" Ren's voice came back.
"Thank you" Kaminari winced.
"Sorry""No harm" Aizawa turned to Shinso.
"Map" Shinso stared into his tea.
"Common room. edge table. board. class. throat mild. shoulder mild. tired. annoyed. map present""Good" Aizawa looked at the whole class.
"Everyone maps one thing that is worse today than yesterday" Kaminari raised a hand.
"My soul" Jiro said "Specific""My left calf. Also soul" Aizawa said "Write left calf" Kaminari wrote left calf and looked mournfully at his soul. The exercise should have been simple. It was not. Because students who could map a battlefield struggled to map the cost of surviving it. Midoriya wrote right forearm tension and then stopped. Aizawa stood behind him until he added sleep poor. Uraraka wrote shoulders sore and hesitated before adding cried after lights out. No one commented. Good.
Iida wrote calves tight and command impulse elevated. Kurose underlined the second one and wrote useful data. Bakugo wrote palms fine. Aizawa looked at it. Bakugo glared back. Aizawa waited. Bakugo scratched out fine so violently the paper nearly tore and wrote palms hot after wakeup. jaw tight. wanted extra training. Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Bakugo looked personally insulted by his own honesty. Todoroki wrote left side colder this morning after stress and then added wanted large ice during dream. He stared at the second phrase for too long before Yaoyorozu quietly slid him another sheet so the words did not have to sit alone at the top. Kaminari wrote left calf and, after Jiro tapped the table twice, added scared of unstable marker. He stared at that one like it had betrayed him by existing. Shinso's paper stayed blank longer than most.
Kurose did not stand behind him. Aizawa did not either. That helped. Eventually, he wrote: wanted to make refusal civilian stop fearing me after drill Then he stared at it. Ren's audio remained quiet. Good. No rescue. No analysis. Not his role. Aizawa read Shinso's sheet when Shinso pushed it forward with two fingers.
"Good" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Not good""Good data""Still annoying""Yes" Kurose looked at the class.
"Recovery is not what happens after training. Recovery is part of whether training survives. If you skip the repair step, you are not becoming more disciplined. You are making yesterday less useful" She wrote on the board: UNRECOVERED TRAINING BECOMES NOISE Kaminari whispered "That is rude to my calf" Mina patted his shoulder.
"Your calf can heal emotionally" Recovery Girl's voice came through Ren's line.
"Muscles do not heal emotionally" Mina whispered "She hears hope" Aizawa tapped the schedule.
"Today's work is precision. Small corrections only. No full-field runs. No maximum output. No target competition. No extra repetitions after success" The class reacted to that last one. Subtly. But Aizawa noticed. Of course.
"No extra repetitions after success" he repeated Bakugo looked away. Midoriya looked down. Iida looked like he had been accused by name. Ren's audio clicked.
"That line is illegal" Recovery Girl said "It is medical law" Shinso muttered "Unfortunately constitutional" Aizawa wrote: SUCCESS DOES NOT BUY ANOTHER REP The room collectively hated it. That was usually how they knew the sentence would stay. The first precision station was called exit role. Ren attended in person for that. Not because it required physical effort. Because it required him to sit in Gym Gamma and not re-enter after exiting. Apparently this was training. He disliked it immediately.
The setup was almost embarrassingly small. One foam sign. One civilian dummy. One brace point. One boundary line labeled EXIT. One chair path. Aizawa stood beside the boundary. Recovery Girl sat near the medical station. Kurose watched with the folder. Hana and Daichi observed from the side because Recovery Girl said if the boy was going to practice not proving things, his family should see the part where he succeeded by doing less. Ren hated that she was right.
The board for the station read: EXIT MUST HAVE ROLE TOOEXIT IS NOT VANISHINGBOUNDARY SUPPORT IS STILL SUPPORTDO NOT TURN EXIT INTO APOLOGY Ren stared at the last line. Kurose said "Yes, that one is for you" Ren looked at her.
"Rude""Efficient" Aizawa said "Scenario. You provide one short stabilization. emergency brace not needed. After transfer, you exit to boundary. From boundary, you may perform only the role declared before entry. If you exceed that role, run ends as unstable" This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. Ren breathed.
"Declared role?"
"Your choice" That was worse. Ren looked at the field. Foam sign. dummy. brace point. boundary. support candidate. The support candidate was Tetsutetsu because the mock had revealed they worked well together and because Tetsutetsu treated being useful as a sacred sport. Tetsutetsu gave Ren a thumbs-up.
"I am ready to take support!" Ren nodded. Good. Too loud. Fine. Ren looked at Aizawa.
"Entry role. stabilize sign for brace transfer. exit role. angle monitor only. no commands except brace angle and route unsafe. no civilian contact after exit" Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" Recovery Girl added "No contact after exit unless new emergency threshold and staff authorizes re-entry" Ren swallowed.
"Accepted""Begin" Ren moved in. Chair path clean. Contact to sign support. Pain. Gate flicker.
"Stop" Gate narrowed. Pain stayed.
"Contact active. sign stable. Tetsutetsu brace ready" Tetsutetsu moved.
"Taking brace" Ren released.
"Outcome. sign held by Tetsutetsu. dummy not under falling support. map. gate local. pain present" He backed to the boundary. Crossed the EXIT line. The run should have been simple after that. It was not. The foam sign shifted deliberately when Aizawa pressed a floor trigger. Tetsutetsu adjusted wrong. Ren's whole body wanted to move. Not far. Just one meter. Just enough to touch the brace point again. He did not.
"Angle monitor. lower left support two centimeters" Tetsutetsu adjusted. Too much.
"Up one""Up one!" The sign stabilized. Good. Then the dummy's arm slipped out from under the sign, creating the illusion of injury. Ren's hand moved on the chair control. Aizawa said nothing. That was cruel. Recovery Girl said nothing. Worse. Ren stopped his hand.
"Boundary role. no civilian contact. Tetsutetsu, dummy arm visible. request field rescuer" Tetsutetsu called "Need field rescuer for dummy arm!" Kendo, assigned but hidden behind a panel, entered.
"Taking civilian check" The run ended. Aizawa nodded.
"Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"Gym Gamma. boundary. exited. wanted re-entry when arm shifted. did not. left wrist quiet. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. frustration. map present" Recovery Girl said "Good" Ren opened his eyes.
"Not done" Aizawa pointed at the board.
"Exit is not vanishing. You supported from boundary" Ren looked at the foam sign. His body did not believe it. Not yet. But the sign had held. The dummy had not worsened. Tetsutetsu had adjusted. Kendo had entered. Ren had not returned. Passable. Precision. Not ready. Good. Kurose wrote on his station sheet: EXIT ROLE HELD Daichi exhaled from the side. Hana's hands were tight but she smiled when Ren looked over. No applause. Good. The second precision station belonged to Shinso.
It was called civilian confirmation before staff. He hated the name because it described exactly what he had done wrong. Aizawa had not softened it. The station had one civilian actor near a red hazard line, one green tape safe zone, one staff marker, and one observer. The board read: IF YOU USE CONTROLOUTCOME TO CIVILIAN FIRSTSTAFF MAP SECONDDO NOT ASK STAFF TO ABSOLVE YOU BEFORE THE PERSON RETURNS Shinso stared at the final line. Kurose stood beside him.
"Too much?" He swallowed.
"No""Keep?"
"Yes" The actor was the same H. U. C. teen who had refused his voice during the mock. That was deliberate. Mizushima believed in repetition under changed conditions. Aizawa believed in discomfort with supervision. Shinso believed both adults were dangerous. The teen stood near yellow tape, breathing fast. Aizawa said "Scenario begins after threshold. This is not a test of whether to use Brainwashing. This is a test of what happens after" Shinso nodded. Map. Gym Gamma. station. teen actor. red line. collar neutral.
throat mild. hands. discomfort. map present. Aizawa said "Begin" The teen crossed red. Shinso spoke.
"Immediate safety. stop moving" The actor answered "No!" Brainwashing took.
"Step back behind green tape" They stepped back.
"Release" The moment after release opened like a trap. Every instinct looked toward Aizawa. Did I do it right? Was that acceptable? Did the staff see? No. Person first. Shinso kept his eyes on the teen.
"You are behind green tape. You crossed a red hazard line after prior refusal and verbal warning. I used one movement command to move you back. You are released now. You do not have to answer me. Jiro is available if you want another contact" The actor breathed. Then nodded once. Shinso turned to Aizawa.
"Map. Quirk used once. one movement command. released. civilian oriented behind green tape. throat fine. discomfort moderate. no regret. map present" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" The teen actor lifted a hand. Mizushima nodded.
"Report" The actor said "Better. I knew I was back before he checked with staff. It made the staff report feel less like he was asking if I counted" Shinso went very still. Kurose wrote that down without looking at him too hard. Shinso breathed.
"Good" Mizushima said "Again" Kaminari, watching from the side, whispered "She is terrifying" Jiro whispered "Useful terrifying" Shinso did it again. Three times. Not more. No extra repetitions after success. On the third, his voice trembled slightly when he said "You are released now" The actor nodded anyway. The run ended. Aizawa wrote: PERSON ORIENTED BEFORE STAFF ABSOLVES Shinso looked at the line.
"Absolves is aggressive" Kurose said "Accurate?" He looked away.
"Unfortunately" The third station was not for Provisional Track. It was for everyone else. Status before action. The board read: STATUS BEFORE THREATSTATUS BEFORE HELPSTATUS BEFORE SELF-SACRIFICESTATUS BEFORE SYMBOLISM Bakugo stared at the first line.
"Do not look at me" Aizawa said "I am looking at everyone""You are looking at me with extra grammar""Correct" The station rotated students through tiny errors from the mock. Bakugo practiced seeing a competing candidate blocking a route and asking "civilian status?" before saying anything else. The first time, the words sounded like a threat wearing a costume. Mizushima made him do it again. The second time, it sounded like a demand. The third time, it sounded almost like a question.
Mizushima said "Passable" Bakugo looked offended.
"Not ready?"
"Not ready" He nodded.
"Good" That, too, was alarming growth. Midoriya practiced seeing two priority conflicts and asking for status before moving his body. His first attempt included too many words and one sentence that began "I can go if—" before Aizawa simply stared him into stopping. Midoriya tried again.
"Status compare. airway? bleeding? route?" Aizawa nodded.
"Better" Uraraka practiced telling a crying child "You are waiting because breathing check is first. You still matter" until her voice stopped apologizing for the truth. Iida practiced shortening "I need you to remain where you are for the moment due to route assessment concerns" into "Stay on green tape. route check first" Todoroki practiced saying "I am not using ice near you. next tool is hand support" without sounding like he expected praise for restraint.
Kaminari practiced voice contact with loud civilians without making his fear louder than their fear. Mina practiced holding emotional presence without leaning into someone's space. Kirishima practiced not becoming wall. Sero practiced restraint naming. Asui practiced telling a quiet civilian "I am checking you first because quiet can hide worse injury" without making it sound like accusation. Yaoyorozu practiced distributed priority calls rather than centralizing every decision.
Jiro practiced being relay without becoming translator of everyone's feelings. None of it looked heroic. All of it was training. Boring was training. By midday, everyone hated precision day in a calmer way than they had hated the mock. That was progress. Lunch happened in the common room. Recovery Girl required it. This became law. Ren came physically for lunch because the morning's station had cost less than a field run and more than sitting would have.
He chose four minutes at the table and then a boundary seat near the door for the rest. Bakugo noticed.
"Half attendance" Ren nodded.
"Exit role" Bakugo stared. Then snorted.
"Good" Kaminari whispered "Everything is roles now" Jiro said "Your role is eating" He looked at his plate.
"I accept this role" Shinso sat at the edge with barley tea and a rice bowl. He looked quieter than usual. Kaminari looked at him. Opened his mouth. Closed it. Progress. Shinso noticed.
"You have a question" Kaminari flinched.
"Yes""Operational?"
"No""Then no""Accepted" Jiro looked proud. Kaminari whispered "I did not ask" Shinso looked at him.
"Private pride later" Kaminari nodded with solemn dignity.
"Later" Todoroki offered tea.
"Available. no role pressure" Bakugo groaned.
"Tea has evolved again" Todoroki poured for himself.
"I am reducing misunderstanding""You are increasing mine" Mina smiled into her rice.
"Recovery lunch is weirdly nice" Aizawa appeared in the doorway.
"No sentence with weirdly nice survives afternoon training" Mina covered her bowl protectively.
"My rice heard nothing" Afternoon precision belonged to support gear. Hatsume had waited all morning with the energy of a contained explosion. Power Loader looked exhausted before she began. The support review board read: GEAR MUST SUPPORT DURABILITYNOT PERFORMANCE DRAMA Hatsume bounced once on her heels.
"I have restrained babies" Kurose looked at her.
"Inventions""I have restrained inventions""Better" Power Loader handed out the first updated prototype. Shinso's collar had a new function. Not modulation. Not amplification beyond chosen range. A consent-status tactile mode. Three private pulses: One pulse — neutral voice useTwo pulses — protocol activeThree pulses — release reminder Shinso stared at the device.
"Release reminder?" Hatsume nodded so fast Power Loader lifted one hand in warning.
"Private tactile cue after Quirk activation timer begins. Not public. Not visible. Does not decide for you. It asks whether release has been completed" Shinso looked at Aizawa. Aizawa looked back.
"Your choice" Shinso held the collar.
"Can it be disabled?" Hatsume's eyes lit up.
"Yes! manual disable with logged switch, no penalty, no sad beep, no judgment tone" Kurose said "No judgment tone should not have needed saying" Hatsume looked offended.
"I have grown" Shinso touched the collar. Release reminder. Not staff absolution. Not public alarm. Gear that asked.
"Test later. not today" Hatsume looked like she might burst. Power Loader pointed at the tape line. She contained herself.
"Accepted" Ren's gear update was smaller. A chair control lockout option after declared exit. Not automatic. Manual. If Ren crossed an exit boundary and chose boundary role, the chair could enter low-mobility monitor mode: slower acceleration, no forward re-entry past a set line unless he pressed a deliberate override and verbally confirmed emergency re-entry. Private haptic warning if his hand tried to move forward too fast after exit. Ren stared at it. It stared back in the form of a small switch.
Hatsume spoke carefully, very clearly coached.
"It does not trap the chair. It asks if forward movement matches declared role. Override remains yours. Staff can see override only if you choose emergency mode or medical threshold triggers" Ren's throat tightened. A device that noticed the part of him that tried to return. A device that did not lock him in place. A device that asked. He looked at Recovery Girl. She said "Your choice.
No fitting today" He looked at Hana and Daichi through the video call on the side tablet because they had not been able to remain all afternoon but had asked to be present for support review. Hana's face was pale. Daichi looked at the switch like it was a small animal with legal implications. Hana said "Does it make leaving safer?" Ren breathed.
"Maybe" Daichi said "Does it make returning impossible?" Hatsume answered before anyone else.
"No. It makes returning deliberate" Silence. That was good language. Suspiciously good. Kurose wrote it down before Hatsume could ruin it. RETURNING DELIBERATE Ren touched the switch but did not activate it.
"Test later. not today" Hatsume contained herself so hard she trembled.
"Accepted" Aizawa looked at both devices.
"Good. Gear review complete" Hatsume made a tiny wounded sound.
"That was so few explosions of innovation" Power Loader said "Successful review" She whispered "Boring is training" Kurose nodded.
"Unfortunately for all of us, yes" The final task of the day happened back in the common room. Not a drill. A board. Aizawa wrote: DURABILITY CHECK Then handed each student a card. Three questions. What survived yesterday? What did not survive today? What is the smallest next fix? No essays. Kaminari sighed.
"Word limits?" Aizawa said "Twenty words each" Yaoyorozu looked personally challenged. Midoriya looked devastated. Bakugo looked delighted by their suffering.
"Finally. Short" His own first answer took twenty-seven words. Jiro noticed. He threatened her with silence. She counted anyway. Ren wrote his card in his room after returning from the support review. What survived yesterday? Exit after transfer. What did not survive today? Wanting to re-enter when arm shifted. Smallest next fix? Declare boundary role before entry and use monitor mode when chosen. He stared at it. Monitor mode. Returning deliberate. Not trapped. Not free to lie. Good.
Shinso wrote: What survived yesterday? Civilian confirmation before staff check. What did not survive today? Wanting staff to confirm I was not wrong. Smallest next fix? Release reminder test. Person first. Staff second. He hated every word. He kept them. Class 1-A's cards varied. Midoriya: route compare survived. self-sacrifice sentence did not. fix status before movement. Bakugo: no chase survived. status question sounded like threat. fix ask like I need answer. Uraraka: truth to child survived.
apology tone did not. fix say waiting without flinching. Iida: shorter routes survived. over-control in refusal did not. fix ask barrier to waiting. Todoroki: proportion survived. alternate tool delay did not. fix name next tool immediately. Kaminari: voice contact survived. panic pitch did not. fix lower voice before second sentence. Mina: space survived. face did not. fix disappointment map. Kirishima: no wall survived. shoulders loaded anyway. fix announce support lane. Jiro: relay survived.
irritation tone did not. fix neutral repeat. Sero: restraint naming survived. joke reflex did not. fix wait for civilian joke first. Asui: quiet urgent survived. comfort tone too flat. fix name danger gently. Yaoyorozu: priority calls survived. centralizing did not. fix assign second caller. Aizawa read them all. Said nothing for a long time. Then nodded.
"Good" Kaminari leaned toward Sero.
"Did we just pass boring?" Sero whispered "Passable boring" Aizawa said "Not ready boring" Kaminari sighed.
"Of course" Dinner was quiet that night. Not heavy. Precision tired. Ren came for six minutes exactly, then looked annoyed at the number and left at five fifty-seven. Bakugo noticed.
"Rejected round number" Ren nodded.
"Proof smell" Bakugo looked at his rice.
"Good" Shinso watched the exchange.
"You both sound like damaged clocks" Ren said "Accurate" Bakugo said "You want to be next?"
"No""Good" Todoroki offered tea.
"Available. no durability claim" Bakugo stared.
"I do not know what that means" Todoroki considered.
"Neither do I fully" Jiro whispered "Honest tea" The common board gained a new line before lights out. BORING IS WHERE READY GETS BUILT Mina was accused. She denied it. Kaminari confessed falsely. Jiro disproved his handwriting. Kurose refused to comment. Aizawa looked too tired to be innocent. No one removed it. Because after the mock, after the passable markers, after the precision stations and ugly little corrections, the line felt less like adult propaganda and more like a structure holding something fragile.
Ready was not made in the moment everyone watched. Ready was made the day after. When the body was tired. When pride wanted extra reps. When the correct fix was smaller than the feeling. When no one clapped because the success was leaving the field and staying useful from the boundary. When the gear did not make you stronger, only more honest. When the door remained ahead and no one ran through it just because it existed. Durability was boring. Good. Boring meant there was time to build.
