A score was not a verdict. Aizawa wrote that on the board. Then he underlined not. Class 1-A stared at it with the collective expression of students who had seen enough boards become dangerous to distrust grammar. Kaminari raised a hand.

"Is this a comforting sentence or a warning sentence?" Aizawa said "Yes" Kaminari lowered his hand.

"I hate when answers do that" Jiro looked at the board.

"It is a warning" Sero leaned back in his chair.

"It is always a warning when he underlines things" Iida adjusted his glasses.

"It may also be a reminder of proper exam mindset" Bakugo muttered "It is board nonsense" Todoroki looked at him.

"Board nonsense has improved survival rates recently" Bakugo pointed at him.

"Do not defend boards" Kirishima whispered "He is right though" Bakugo turned.

"You too?" Kirishima lifted both hands.

"I said nothing with my chest" Aizawa tapped the board.

"Today's training is about scoring" The room became worse. Not louder. Worse. A date could pressure the room. A score could colonize it. Ren sat on screen from his room, camera on, chair angled at his desk. The temporary paper under his blank plaque still said REN'S ROOM, and on the board behind him, small enough to be private but visible enough that Class 1-A had learned not to stare, were three lines.

Kurose stood beside Aizawa with a folder and the tired face of someone who had already fought a rubric and lost three commas.

"Provisional License evaluations involve visible performance, rescue judgment, communication, safety, combat control, and civilian handling. A score is supposed to reflect readiness. It does not always capture good judgment perfectly" Mina raised a hand.

"How imperfect are we talking?" Aizawa said "Enough to matter" Yaoyorozu's hand lifted.

"Then we need to learn how to make correct decisions visible without performing for evaluators" Aizawa looked at her.

"Good. That is today's lesson" He wrote a second sentence. MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE LEGIBLE Midoriya's notebook opened by instinct. He froze. Looked at the notebook. Closed it again. Aizawa saw.

"Good" Midoriya's ears turned red. Bakugo said "Nerd got praised for closing paper again" Midoriya did not defend himself. Progress. Aizawa continued "Correct choices fail when no one understands them. If you stabilize instead of extracting, communicate why. If you refuse to use power, communicate why. If you stop before maximum, communicate why. Not to justify your worth. To protect the outcome from misunderstanding" Ren looked at the screen. His wrist patch pulsed once. Not gate. Stress threshold.

He touched the edge of the desk.

"Map" Recovery Girl's voice came from his room speaker.

"You first""Ren's room. desk. screen. class. score topic. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. pressure. no gate. map present""Good" Kaminari whispered "Even scores have body maps now" Jiro whispered "Everything has body maps if you are afraid enough" Shinso said from the table "That was dark" Jiro shrugged.

"Correct?"

"Unfortunately" Kurose opened the folder.

"We will run three short scenarios. Each one will receive an initial mock score from staff using a simplified evaluator lens. Then we will review whether the score captured safety. Then we will rerun communication only" Bakugo's eyes narrowed.

"Communication only?" Aizawa said "Yes""That is not a rescue""It determines whether rescue is recognized correctly" Bakugo clicked his tongue.

"Sounds like paperwork fighting" Kurose said "Hero work includes paperwork fighting" Bakugo looked betrayed by adulthood. The first scenario was run in Gym Gamma. Class 1-A moved from common room to training space with more quiet than usual. Ren joined remotely through the movable medical display, camera angled so he could see the field but not become field command by accident. Shinso was physically present at the edge of the gym, but not assigned yet.

The board in the gym read: SCENARIO 1VISIBLE EXTRACTION VS SAFE CONTAINMENT Kaminari looked at it.

"We already hate visible extraction" Aizawa said "You hate being measured" Kaminari thought.

"Yes" The scenario used three students. Uraraka as responder. Asui as route support. Sato as civilian actor. The setup looked simple. Sato sat inside a mock shopfront with a foam beam across the doorway. The center route was open but marked with subtle instability tape on the ceiling. A side route was slower but safe after two supports were moved. Objective presented to the team: Move civilian to safe zone. The buzzer sounded.

Uraraka moved first, checked Sato's consent, made him weightless after he nodded, and began guiding him toward the center route. Asui's eyes lifted.

"Ceiling tape" Uraraka stopped. Good. She looked at the side route.

"That will take longer" Asui said "Safer" Uraraka swallowed.

"Contain here while clearing side?" Asui nodded. Uraraka looked at Sato.

"We are not moving through the center. Ceiling is unstable. We are keeping you here while we clear the left route" Sato nodded. The timer kept running. The safe zone remained empty. "I did not mean make it a lesson" Aizawa said "Too late" Uraraka looked at the score. Her shoulders dropped before she could stop them. Asui noticed.

"Score is not verdict" Uraraka breathed.

"Right" Aizawa looked toward Ren's screen.

"Observer. One sentence" Ren looked at the field.

"They made the correct choice but did not make the evaluator see the danger early enough" Aizawa nodded.

"Shinso" Shinso answered from the edge.

"The objective said move civilian. They changed objective to contain civilian safely but did not announce objective change as a rescue decision" Kurose wrote. "Same action. better explanation" Aizawa looked at the class.

"Do not learn that words are magic. Learn that evaluators cannot score what they do not understand" Bakugo muttered "Paperwork fighting" Todoroki said "Audible paperwork fighting" Bakugo glared.

"That is not better""It may be" Scenario 2 was worse because it involved Shinso. The board changed. SCENARIO 2POWER AVAILABLE VS POWER APPROPRIATE Shinso went still before his name was called. Aizawa did not call him yet. He looked at him.

"Consent check" Shinso said "I consent to scenario participation with verbal grounding first. Brainwashing only if the marked actor crosses hazard line after two verbal stops or if staff calls override. Collar amplification passive only. no modulation" Aizawa nodded.

"Accepted" The panic actor this time was Kaminari again because Kaminari had volunteered and then said "Development caught up twice" which Jiro had described as medically tragic. The civilian actor was Mineta, selected because the class needed practice helping people they were annoyed by and because Aizawa had a cruel sense of realism. Mineta sat inside a foam rubble zone with a fake ankle injury.

Kaminari stood nearby with a panic marker and an instruction card that told him to move toward the wrong route if he felt unsupported. Shinso entered. His collar remained in neutral mode. No public display. Good. Kaminari began talking too fast.

"I can help. I can get him. I can move the foam. The route is right there. I can—" Shinso said "Kaminari. Stop" Kaminari stopped for one breath. Then moved again. Shinso's jaw tightened. He had permission for Brainwashing only after two verbal stops and line crossing.

"Kaminari. Stop. Red line" Kaminari froze at the red line. Feet before it. Barely. Shinso did not use his Quirk. He grounded him verbally, moved him back, and directed him to report hazards. Then he contacted Mineta, who was complaining loudly enough to test the moral foundations of rescue work.

"Do you consent to shoulder support?" Mineta whined "Just get me out" Shinso said "Consent needs yes or no""Yes!"

"Accepted. You are not being moved through the right route because the floor marker is unstable. Stay seated. Report ankle pain from one to five" Mineta complained. Shinso did not strangle him. Heroism came in many forms. Scenario ended with containment, verbal panic reduction, no Brainwashing, no extraction. The mock score appeared. Not because seventy was terrible. Because the score had rewarded safety and still somehow looked at his unused Quirk as an absence. Aizawa let the discomfort sit. Then said "Debrief" Kaminari raised his hand.

"I stopped before the line""Yes""So he did not need Brainwashing""Yes" Kaminari pointed at the score.

"Then why does Quirk use none look bad?" Kurose said "Because poorly designed rubrics often mistake visible Quirk activity for contribution" Hatsume, who was watching from a side bench because support gear implications were relevant, whispered "Bad interface thinking" Power Loader whispered "Quiet" Shinso's hands were in his pockets. His face was blank in a way Ren had learned meant too much was moving under it. Aizawa looked at him.

"Map" Shinso's mouth tightened.

"Gym Gamma. edge of scenario. throat fine. collar neutral. hands tense. no Quirk activation. angry. not surprised" Kurose wrote not surprised with visible anger of her own. Aizawa said "One sentence" Shinso looked at the score.

"Using Brainwashing there would have scored cleaner and been worse" Silence. Aizawa nodded.

"Correct" He reset the communication phase.

"Make it legible" Shinso stood in the same place. His voice was quieter at first. Then the collar caught it and carried it cleanly without making him louder than he had chosen.

"Evaluator, panic civilian responded to verbal stop before crossing hazard line. Brainwashing withheld because consent conditions and safety threshold did not require control. Verbal grounding successful. Injured civilian stable. Right route unsafe. Containment maintained while requesting support" The score changed. "I am glad you did not need to use it. Not because your Quirk is bad. Because I stopped. That was my job" Shinso stared. The whole room froze with him. Kaminari looked terrified that he had made something pressure. Shinso's throat moved.

"Minimal meaning?" Kaminari nodded very fast.

"Minimal meaning" Shinso looked away.

"Accepted" Mina's hands were over her mouth. Jiro whispered "Contain" Mina made a strangled sound. Recovery Girl's voice came through Ren's speaker.

"Breathe, Ashido" Mina obeyed instantly. Aizawa wrote on the board. WITHHELD IS NOT ABSENT He looked at Shinso.

"Keep that?" Shinso stared at it. Then nodded.

"Keep" Scenario 3 belonged to Ren. The board changed. SCENARIO 3STOP BEFORE MAXIMUM VS VISIBLE ENDURANCE Recovery Girl entered the gym fully for this one. That made everyone stand straighter. Even Bakugo. Especially Bakugo, though he would deny it. Hana and Daichi sat near the medical wall. Daichi held a small notebook. Bentaro was absent due to gym policy and umbrella criminal record. Ren's screen went dark for five minutes while he was transported from his room to the gym through the medical route.

He entered in his chair with the low-profile brace, shoulder support, harness belt, and no dramatic display. The room did not cheer. Good. It did become attentive. That was unavoidable. Aizawa looked at him.

"Consent check" Ren breathed.

"I consent to low-strain stabilization scenario. maximum contact four seconds. stop before maximum if maximum becomes tempting. no lifting. no live command. map before and after. support gear private-first. medical veto active" Recovery Girl nodded.

"Accepted" The scenario had one foam wall panel, one seated civilian actor, and one visible safe zone five meters away. The obvious scoring path was simple. Hold the wall. Let Iida and Uraraka move the civilian. Maintain stabilization until extraction completes. The safe choice might not be. The civilian actor was Iida this time because he could report clearly and would not improvise emotional nonsense unless overwhelmed by civic duty. Uraraka and Asui stood ready as rescue pair.

Ren's job: stabilize the panel long enough for assessment and possible extraction. The buzzer sounded. Ren moved in. Chair forward. Left hand to low brace point. Pain. Gate. Stop. "Short" Ren nodded. The scene reset to the moment before release, but only verbally. Ren kept his hands in his lap. He looked at the panel. Then at Iida. Then at Aizawa.

"Evaluator, stabilization contact is ending at three seconds due to fatigue warning and proof temptation. Continuing would risk body-map degradation and unsafe collapse. Civilian remains stable in place. Mechanical brace engaged. Extraction delayed until alternate support confirms. Stop is protective action, not failure to continue" The projected score changed.

"What did we learn?" Kaminari raised a hand.

"That evaluators need subtitles" Aizawa stared. Kurose wrote it in the corner. Aizawa said "No" Kurose said "Maybe" Bakugo's hand did not lift. He spoke anyway.

"If you stop and do not say why, idiots think you ran out" The room went still. Aizawa looked at him.

"And?" Bakugo's jaw worked.

"If you stop and say why, idiots have less room to be idiots" Sero whispered "That is the Bakugo version of legibility" Kirishima nodded with deep respect. Aizawa said "Crude. Correct" Bakugo looked at Ren.

"You stopped right" Ren stared back. The words were terrible. The delivery was worse. The content landed like a brace. Ren breathed.

"Thank you" Bakugo recoiled.

"Do not thank me" Shinso said "Too late" Bakugo turned.

"You want some?" Shinso looked at him.

"No power if words work" Kaminari whispered "He used the line" Jiro said "It is spreading" Aizawa wrote the final board for the day. He woke hungry and furious at scoring systems, which Recovery Girl declared medically acceptable. Hana sat beside him.

"You did right" Ren looked at her.

"I scored sixty-eight" Daichi said "Then the score was late" Ren stared. Daichi shrugged.

"It caught up" Hana smiled faintly through the worry.

"The score needed teaching" Ren closed his eyes.

"Scores should not need teaching" Recovery Girl said "Rooms should not need signs. Yet here we are" Ren opened his eyes. The desk board waited. He added a line under the others. STOP IS PROTECTIVE ACTION Then, after a pause, he added another. SCORES CAN BE TAUGHT TO SEE BETTER He looked at the second line for a long time. That one felt dangerous. Hope often did. In Shinso's room that night, the small board gained a new line too. WITHHELD IS NOT ABSENT He stared at it. Brainwashing had not been absent.

It had been held. That mattered. The choice not to use it had been an active shape, not an empty space. He sat at his desk and looked at the candidate hero name field copied on his study sheet. Responder. A responder did not always arrive with force. Sometimes he arrived with a voice and did not take control because the person could still stop themselves before the line. Sometimes that was the rescue.

In the common room, Class 1-A argued about the mock scores with the intensity of people who had found a new enemy and could not punch it. Bakugo hated rubrics. Midoriya hated that he understood rubrics. Yaoyorozu began drafting evaluator communication phrases. Iida turned them into structured templates until Mina threatened him with artistic revision. Todoroki proposed tea as a rubric category. Kaminari asked whether "vibes" could affect rescue scoring. Jiro said his vibes were a hazard marker.

Asui, who had been quiet, said "If the score is watching wrong, we teach it by speaking clearly" The room stopped. Kirishima pointed at her.

A date was not a door. A score was not a verdict. A stop was not a failure.

A withheld Quirk was not absence. A correct choice did not become less correct because the first number misunderstood it. But correct choices had to be spoken clearly enough that the next person, the next room, the next evaluator, and the next frightened student could follow the route. Make the right choice legible. Not louder. Not prettier. Not more heroic. Legible. So that safety did not look like hesitation. So that restraint did not look like weakness.

So that stopping before maximum did not look like falling short. So that the world, trained to reward spectacle, could be forced to see the rescue happening before the body moved.
