Chương 161: Passing Is Also Leaving

The shape bent. Did not break. Yet. The vibration rolled under the street again, stronger than before, and the field answered with the ugly honesty of loose concrete, shifting stance, and target balls turning simple throws into accidents with names. Ren's chair rocked once. Not danger. Not yet. The left wheel corrected against a crack that had not been there a second ago. His hand tightened around the control and did not overcorrect. The Boundary Return Monitor was still inactive. Stage one. No boundary role.
No exit. No brace for scoring. Current map. Field. rear-left. one target lost. chest and shoulder intact. chair-back gone. left wrist quiet. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. vibration. pressure. map present.
"Ground shift increasing. left lane unstable" Ren called Yaoyorozu's voice cut across the lane.
"Split lanes. score through disruption" That was the difference. Not survive disruption. Score through it. Shindo's smile widened from the left street as the tremor moved through U. A.'s line. He looked friendly enough to be dangerous and dangerous enough to make the friendliness feel like part of the Quirk.
"U. A. adapts quickly!" Bakugo would have answered. Bakugo was gone. Qualified. Field keeps moving. Jiro's earjacks snapped against a metal frame and pulled sound out of the shaking street.
"Three closing behind the tremor. one high. two low" Iida did not amplify instantly. He verified.
"Left route unstable. right half-clear. support right" Kaminari's voice stayed low.
"Right half-clear. spark not safe. throwing" His ball hit a wall, bounced too high, missed everyone. The candidate who had expected electricity flinched anyway. Mina slid acid in a thin line across the broken street and made the flinch worse. Jiro's throw struck the candidate's lower target. Hit.
"Kaminari forced. Mina shaped. Jiro point" Yaoyorozu called"Miss still useful" Kaminari muttered"Next" Jiro said He moved. Good. The overhead announcement crackled.
"Seventy candidates have qualified" The number hit the field like a second tremor. Seventy. Thirty slots left. Not enough for hesitation. Not enough for panic either. U. A. was still mostly inside. Bakugo had passed. Todoroki had passed. The loud edge and the weather edge were gone. That meant everyone else had to become more precise, not larger. Midoriya saw the same thing. Ren could tell by the way his shoulders wanted to lift and did not.
"Pair scoring" Midoriya called "No rescue shape" Uraraka answered "Left pair. I am with you""Status. targets?"
"One lost. no elimination. multiple points""No targets lost. no elimination. multiple points" They moved. Not like Sports Festival footage. Not like canon fragments wanted to pretend. Better. Uraraka floated three pieces of debris at knee height, small enough not to become shields, moving enough to disturb aim. Midoriya used controlled bursts through the gaps and forced two Ketsubutsu candidates to separate. One tried to bait him with a false stumble. Old reflex flared. He saw a body falling and almost went.
Then the body's hand stayed too ready. Status before movement.
"False fall. not rescue" Uraraka's ball hit the candidate's side target. Midoriya used the flinch and struck the chest target. Asui dropped from above and hit the final target with a clean flick of her tongue-guided throw. The local system chimed. Candidate eliminated by Asui Tsuyu. Asui's second elimination. Candidate Asui Tsuyu qualified. Asui landed on a wall ledge, eyes widening for half a breath. Then she moved toward the exit line.
"Field keeps moving. ribbit" Her voice was calm. Her hand shook once. Good. One more U. A. out. One more gap. Ren watched the shape re-form. Asui's high support had been quiet until it was absent. Now the upper angles opened. Jiro saw it too.
"High support gone. upper left exposed" Iida answered "Taking route watch" He was not high support. He did not pretend to be. He verified, called, redirected. Good. Shindo's tremor came again. This time, Midoriya used it. Not against Shindo. Against the candidates riding the wave. He waited for the exact moment the floor betrayed their knees and threw low. Uraraka released a floating slab at the same time, not blocking but redirecting. The ball hit one target.
The slab forced the second candidate into Midoriya's next throw. Two hits. The candidate twisted away from the final ball. Into Uraraka's line. Hit. Candidate eliminated by Uraraka Ochaco. Her first elimination.
"Uraraka one" Yaoyorozu called "Midoriya window" Uraraka breathed.
"No celebration. next" Good. Midoriya had not passed. Uraraka had not passed. But the scoring had begun to move faster. The field noticed. Other candidates shifted away from Bakugo's absent lane and toward U. A.' s less explosive center. They saw Yaoyorozu organizing, Jiro calling, Ren reading low angles, Shinso scoring despite silence, Midoriya still inside, Uraraka gaining points. They adjusted. Smarter. Two candidates from a smaller school moved toward Ren together. Not recklessly.
One had long elastic arms with target balls held at strange angles. The other used small gusts of air from her palms to alter the final path of throws. They had seen the chair-back target gone. They had seen Ren moving low and slow. They had also seen his rebounds. So they did not throw at his chair. They threw around it. Good. Bad. Ren's right shoulder target became the question. The first ball curved from low right. The second delayed from high left.
A third came from the elastic-armed candidate's stretched hand after the first two committed him. He could avoid two. Not three. No brace. No proof. He moved backward, then stopped, making the first ball pass in front of his chest. He angled the chair left enough for the second to strike the wall. The third clipped his right shoulder target. Flash. Second target lost. The field narrowed. Two lost. One remaining. His condition arrived with teeth. If I lose two targets, I remain active only if map stable. Map. Field.
rear-left. two targets lost. chest target only. chair stable. left wrist quiet. shoulder target hit, no injury. ribs quiet. pressure rising. proof? no. map present. Ren said it aloud before anyone else could say anything.
"Second target lost. map stable. continuing. no compensation behavior" Kirishima's shoulders loaded from three lanes away. He stopped.
"No wall unless assigned" Good. Shinso's eyes flicked toward Ren. Ren answered before he asked.
"Not finished" Shinso nodded.
"Visible. not captured" The elastic-armed candidate heard enough to smirk.
"One left" Ren looked at him.
"Yes" No more. Operational. The gust candidate shifted her hands. Ren saw the angle. Not the ball. The hand. Low view. Wrist turn. She was not aiming at him. She was aiming to force him to dodge into the elastic candidate's throw. A fix is not a script. Stationary would lose. Backward would lose. Forward would look impossible. So he moved forward. Half a meter. Again. But this time, he did not throw at either candidate. He threw at the gust.
The ball crossed the air current at the wrong angle, slowed, dipped, and struck the ground between them. The gust candidate stepped right to avoid the rebound. Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site. Shinso's ball hit her back target. Jiro's followed and hit her shoulder. Ren's second ball, already bouncing off the broken curb, struck her chest target from below. The local system chimed. Candidate eliminated by Ren Akiyama.
For half a second, the world went too quiet. His first elimination. One left. One target left. Proof rose like a hand from deep water. Ren pressed two fingers to his patch.
"Proof" The word was ugly. Useful.
"I scored one elimination. reducing chase. map present" Uraraka, passing behind with Midoriya, answered without turning it into comfort.
"Field keeps moving" Good. Bakugo would have approved in the most irritating way possible. From the qualified candidate area, Bakugo did in fact approve. He stood behind the boundary barrier with Todoroki and Asui, arms crossed, teeth bared at the field like he was personally offended by glass.
"He said proof" Todoroki looked at the display.
"He stopped the proof" Bakugo clicked his tongue.
"That is what I said""No, you said—""I know what I said" Asui, standing beside them, looked at the field.
"Ren has one target left. ribbit" Bakugo's grin faded by one degree.
"Yeah" The field kept moving. The elastic-armed candidate, now alone and down two teammates, decided Ren was too costly. That was useful. He turned away. Ren let him. Not every open back was his. Not every chance was clean. Elsewhere, Shinso was hunting for his second elimination without looking like a hunter. He had one elimination. No targets lost. One Quirk use. Throat fine. Release reminder disabled because stage one choice had been correct at the beginning.
The choice did not become wrong because one use happened. Conditions begin with current map. Current map said he could use Brainwashing again if reason clean. It did not say he had to. A candidate from Seiai saw him watching and snapped "Do not speak" Shinso did not. He moved his scarf instead. The candidate had one target left. Jiro and Kaminari had taken the other two through a sound-and-flinch window. The candidate knew Shinso needed a finish and refused to answer. Fine. Silence was not absence.
Shinso threw his first ball high and deliberately bad. The candidate dodged toward cover. Sero's tape snapped from the side and made the cover line lower by two centimeters. Not restraint. Route. The candidate ducked. Shinso's scarf wrapped around a broken pole and pulled him into the angle the candidate had just made safe. He threw low. Hit. The final target flashed. Candidate eliminated by Shinso Hitoshi. Candidate Shinso Hitoshi qualified. The field system announced it without drama. That was almost insulting.
Shinso stopped. For one heartbeat, his body did not know what to do with qualifying. Continue? Leave? Help? Control? Default answer? No. Passing is also leaving. He looked toward Yaoyorozu.
"Qualified. exiting. field keeps moving" Yaoyorozu answered "Acknowledged. route adjusted" Jiro said "Responder exiting. I take voice relay if needed" Kaminari's face tried to do three things. He forced it into one.
"Good route" Shinso looked at him.
"Passable face" Kaminari whispered "I will take it" Shinso turned toward the qualified exit lane. A Ketsubutsu candidate tried to hit his back target as he moved away. He had already qualified. A hit did not matter for passing, but unsafe movement still mattered. He used scarf, knocked the ball aside, did not retaliate. No extra. No proof. No punishment. At the barrier, Bakugo looked at him.
"You used the damn voice once" Shinso said "And did not use it when I did not need it" Bakugo grunted.
"Good" Todoroki said "Passing is leaving" Shinso glanced at him.
"That sounded like tea""It was not" Bakugo said "It was close" Asui said "It was true. ribbit" Shinso looked back at the field. Ren was still inside. One target left. One elimination. The announcement came again.
"Eighty candidates have qualified" Twenty slots. U. A. still had too many inside. Midoriya. Uraraka. Iida. Kirishima. Jiro. Kaminari. Mina. Sero. Yaoyorozu. Ren. Sero had one elimination. Uraraka one. Jiro no elimination but several points. Kaminari no elimination. Mina none. Iida none. Kirishima none. Yaoyorozu none. Midoriya none. Ren one. The math was bad. But not impossible. Yaoyorozu saw the same ledger. Her face changed. Not panic. Decision.
"Cluster scoring. finish candidates with two targets lost. No one hunts alone. Passing order does not equal worth" Iida echoed "Passing order does not equal worth" Kaminari whispered "I needed that" Jiro said "Keep moving" The next two minutes became brutal. Not violent. Compressed. Every throw had to become more than itself. U. A. stopped trying to make personal victories and started building exits. Jiro called a candidate's hidden movement behind a wall. Mina's acid forced them out.
Kaminari's low throw took one target. Sero's tape shifted their dodge. Yaoyorozu finished. Candidate eliminated by Yaoyorozu Momo. Her first. Yaoyorozu did not pause.
"I have one. continue" Iida used his speed not to score first but to deliver information across a broken lane faster than voice could travel through noise. Then he saw a candidate with two targets lost stumble into his route. Motion wanted rescue. Exam wanted score. Ethics wanted not to injure. He threw cleanly, from the side, at the final target. Hit. Candidate eliminated by Iida Tenya. His first.
"I have one. no apology. continue" Kirishima laughed once.
"Good weird" Then he took his own first elimination by not becoming wall. A candidate expected him to harden and block for Kaminari. Instead he called "support lane" and stepped aside, revealing Mina's low acid curve and Jiro's throw path. The candidate dodged into Kirishima's ball. Final target. Candidate eliminated by Kirishima Eijiro.
"First. not enough. next" Kaminari's first elimination came because he did not spark. A candidate wearing insulated gear tried to bait his electricity, staying just outside a line where a discharge would be risky. Kaminari looked at the gear, lowered his voice, and threw a plain ball at the ground. It bounced under the insulation panel and hit the final target behind the knee. Candidate eliminated by Kaminari Denki. He stared.
"No spark" Jiro said "No time""Right!" Mina's first elimination came from making someone choose the least bad floor. They chose wrong. Her ball hit final target after Yaoyorozu's disc redirected it. Candidate eliminated by Ashido Mina. She did not cheer. Her face tried. She mapped it.
"Face not driving. continue" Sero got his second with tape as route, not restraint, guiding a candidate into Jiro's line then finishing through a rebound off his own tape anchor. Candidate Sero Hanta qualified. He exited with both hands raised halfway, then lowered them before they became celebration pressure.
"Field keeps moving" Asui called from the barrier "Good exit. ribbit""Eighty-eight candidates have qualified" Twelve slots. The field became desperate. Candidates stopped pretending to be polite. They targeted those with visible damage. They targeted U. A. because U. A. was still famous and still inside. They targeted Ren because one chest target remained like an invitation. Ren knew it. Everyone knew it. The chest target felt larger than his body. One target left. One elimination. One direct point. No brace.
No monitor. No proof. Map stable. A group of three smaller-school candidates angled toward him, not because they hated him, but because math had narrowed enough to make anyone vulnerable become route. Kirishima's shoulders loaded. He had one elimination. One target lost. He wanted to become wall. He did not.
"Ren pressure. I am support lane. not wall" Yaoyorozu called "Ren, role?" Ren looked at the three candidates. If he said retreat, they could retreat. If he said bait, wrong. No one becomes bait without saying it. But visibility was already there. The question was whether he chose the shape of it.
"Visible lane. not bait. I can draw one throw and call angle. no contact. no brace. if chest target threatened by second line, I exit route or accept hit" Yaoyorozu answered instantly.
"Accepted. no wall. scoring through visible lane" Jiro said "Three candidates. front gust. left elastic. rear blade-thrower" Not actual blade. A flat-edged disc Quirk maybe. No time. Ren moved into the broken street where his chair could roll cleanly but not fast. Open enough to be seen. Narrow enough to make angles honest. The three candidates took it. Of course. The front gust user was not the same one as before, but similar enough to be annoying.
The elastic candidate from earlier had returned, one target lost now from someone else. The rear candidate held two balls between finger joints. They threw. Ren did not dodge first. He watched hands. Front gust aimed to push his dodge left. Elastic aimed for chest if he went left. Rear aimed for chest if he stayed. Right was a crack. Bad for wheels. Not impossible. He moved right by less than a full wheel width. The chair jolted. Not catch. The first ball passed left.
The elastic throw stretched wide and missed chest by centimeters. The rear ball came straight. Ren threw at the ground in front of himself. Collision. Both balls deflected upward. Kaminari's throw took the rear candidate's second target. Jiro's throw took the third. Candidate eliminated by Jiro Kyoka. Her first. Ren's chest target remained. His left wrist pulsed. Gate flicker. Not from contact. Stress.
"Proof?" Shinso's voice carried from the barrier, not loud, somehow enough. Ren answered "No. stress. map present" Recovery Girl muttered from observation "Good" The elastic candidate cursed and overextended for a second throw. Kirishima called "Left stretch" Iida moved. Not to shield Ren. To take the route created by the stretch. His ball hit the elastic candidate's side target. Second lost. Ren saw the final target line. Not his? It could be. Should he take it? He needed one. Iida needed one.
Kirishima needed one. Passing order does not equal worth. But the lane was his. The chair angle was already set. If he delayed to be fair, the window would die. Score without apology. Ren threw. Low. Clean. Final target. Candidate eliminated by Ren Akiyama. For a breath, the field did not seem to understand. Then the system did. Candidate Ren Akiyama qualified. The sound hit him harder than any ball had. Qualified. With one target remaining. No brace. No contact. No Graft Lattice for scoring. Two eliminations.
One direct hit. One target left. Map? Map. Field. Ren. qualified. chest target intact. chair stable. left wrist gate flicker. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. proof rising. map present. He said the only sentence that could save it.
"Qualified. proof present. exiting. field keeps moving" Yaoyorozu answered "Acknowledged. route adjusted" Kirishima's face moved. He stopped it.
"Good exit" Iida said "Field continues" Ren turned toward the qualified exit route. Every part of him wanted to look back too much. He allowed one look. Not a rescue look. A map look. Midoriya still inside. Uraraka still inside. Iida, Kirishima, Jiro, Kaminari, Mina, Yaoyorozu. Numbers tightening. Shape still there. Then he moved. A candidate tried a last throw at his remaining chest target from the side. It would not change qualification if it hit, but the body did not know that. Ren's hand twitched. No. Exit.
Passing is also leaving. Sero, already near the barrier, snapped tape from outside the active field? No. Not allowed. He stopped himself. Good. Ren adjusted the chair angle within his path and let the ball pass behind. No counterthrow. No extra. He crossed into the qualified zone. The barrier staff directed him to the waiting area. His hands shook once on the controls. Recovery Girl was not allowed onto the field but the qualified zone had medical observation access. She appeared at the boundary like a law.
"Map" Ren stopped.
"Qualified zone. two eliminations. one target remaining. no brace. no contact. left wrist gate flicker stress. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. proof present and named. map present" Recovery Girl looked at the monitor. Then at him.
"Good" Bakugo stood behind her with arms crossed.
"You passed ugly" Ren breathed.
"Yes""Good" Shinso looked at him.
"Visible lane. not bait" Ren nodded.
"Worked""Still ugly""Yes" Todoroki said "Passing is also leaving" Bakugo pointed at him without looking.
"Do not make it worse" Ren almost smiled. Ribs quiet. Good. The announcement came.
"Ninety-two candidates have qualified" Eight slots. U. A. still had seven inside. Midoriya, Uraraka, Iida, Kirishima, Jiro, Kaminari, Mina, Yaoyorozu. Wait. Sero passed. Asui passed. Bakugo. Todoroki. Shinso. Ren. Eight inside. Eight slots. That was not safe. Because other candidates were still scoring. The qualified zone went silent. Even Bakugo stopped talking. On the field, Yaoyorozu heard the number and made the only call that mattered.
"U. A. scoring sprint. no solo heroics. build exits now" No one argued. The next thirty seconds were almost beautiful. Ugly. Precise. Jiro finished her second elimination first. Not with sound. With trust. Kaminari forced a flinch. Mina shaped the floor. Jiro took the final target through a gap she had heard before anyone saw it. Candidate Jiro Kyoka qualified.
"Exiting. voice relay shifts to Iida" She left. Kaminari did not look after her. No face. Good. Kaminari passed next because Jiro's last sound call reached him before she crossed fully out. He threw low at a candidate with two lost targets and struck final. Candidate Kaminari Denki qualified. His face exploded. Then compressed.
"Exiting. no face. mostly" Mina shouted "Mostly counts today!" He exited. Mina passed because Uraraka lifted a debris shard and Yaoyorozu redirected a ball off it into the target Mina had made accessible with acid. Mina took the final hit herself. Candidate Ashido Mina qualified.
"Face driving? no. face passenger!"
"Exit!" Iida shouted She exited laughing once, then covering her mouth like laughter might be a Quirk violation. Kirishima passed when he finally became wall. Assigned. Not reflex. Iida called "Kirishima wall assigned. protect route for final throw" Kirishima hardened, took two incoming balls on arms away from targets, and used the stable position to throw at a candidate whose last target had been exposed by Midoriya's controlled movement. Candidate Kirishima Eijiro qualified.
"No wall unless assigned. assigned wall. exiting!" Bakugo muttered from the barrier "About time" Kirishima grinned at him across the zone.
"Legal wall!"
"Shut up" Iida and Yaoyorozu remained with Midoriya and Uraraka.
"Ninety-six candidates have qualified" Four slots. Four U. A. inside. That number was too neat to be kind. Other candidates heard it too. Every remaining candidate became math. Shindo moved again, smiling less now, one elimination at least, maybe more, not yet qualified or choosing his moment. He touched the ground. The tremor split the lane between Midoriya and Uraraka. On another street, Inasa's wind roared and three targets flashed across the field. Shiketsu candidates qualified in a burst.
"Ninety-seven candidates have qualified" Three slots. Iida looked at the route. Yaoyorozu looked at the field. Midoriya looked at Uraraka. Uraraka looked at a candidate with two targets lost behind Shindo's tremor. No speeches. Status before movement.
"Iida" Yaoyorozu called "route through right break""Verified. risky but passable""Uraraka, lift debris. Midoriya, force step. I finish? no. You need—" Midoriya cut in, not rude.
"Everyone needs. Build clean window" The tremor hit. Uraraka lifted debris, not high, just enough to remove the candidate's safe step. Midoriya moved with controlled burst and forced the candidate backward. Iida crossed the route and struck the second target of another candidate on the way, because route and score could be the same if clean. Yaoyorozu created a small disc. Threw. Final target. Candidate eliminated by Yaoyorozu Momo. Candidate Yaoyorozu Momo qualified. She did not freeze.
"Exiting. Iida routes. Midoriya left. Uraraka right""Ninety-eight candidates have qualified" Two slots. Iida had one elimination and multiple points. Midoriya had points but no elimination? He needed two. Uraraka had one. Canon would have had him ready earlier. This story had made him stop. Stopping cost. Now he had to score without making the cost someone else's fault. Midoriya breathed. No All Might. Me. He saw Shindo's tremor begin again. This time he did not resist it. He used it.
He let the first pulse lift his step, directed One For All through his legs in a controlled burst, and moved not toward a person, but toward a line. His ball struck a broken wall, bounced through Uraraka's floating debris path, and hit the final target of a candidate she had weakened. Candidate eliminated by Midoriya Izuku. His first. Not enough. The number remained ninety-eight. Uraraka saw his face.
"No apology. next" He nodded. Iida moved like a line drawn by urgency. He had route. He had one elimination. He saw a candidate with two lost targets trying to hide behind a cracked column. He could finish. Midoriya needed more. Uraraka needed one. Passing order does not equal worth. But the lane was his. He took it. Final target. Candidate eliminated by Iida Tenya. Candidate Iida Tenya qualified.
"Ninety-nine candidates have qualified" One slot. Iida's face twisted. He had to leave. Field keeps moving.
"Exiting. Midoriya. Uraraka. continue" He ran out. One slot. Two U. A. left. Midoriya and Uraraka. The field became a blade. Uraraka had one elimination. Midoriya had one. Both needed one. Only one slot remained. Other candidates needed it too. Shindo was still there. Smiling. Less friendly now. He looked at Midoriya and Uraraka and touched the ground. The tremor began under both of them. Not enough to hurt. Enough to decide. Uraraka floated herself half an inch, then stopped. No. Not escape. Use.
She touched a slab and lifted it into the tremor's path. Midoriya saw the angle and moved with it. They did not speak enough for a plan. They had trained too long to need much. A candidate from Seijin with two targets lost lunged for Uraraka's final target. A Ketsubutsu candidate with two lost targets angled toward Midoriya's side. Only one of them could be finished before someone else on the field scored. Uraraka's eyes met Midoriya's. No apology. No self-sacrifice. Status. Her lane was cleaner. His was faster.
The tremor lifted the Seijin candidate's foot. Uraraka released her debris slab. It struck the ground and bounced Midoriya's ball, not hers, into the candidate's final target. Candidate eliminated by Midoriya Izuku. The overhead system chimed. Candidate Midoriya Izuku qualified. One hundred candidates have qualified. First stage complete. For one second, the entire field did not understand. Then the buzzer sounded. All remaining candidates froze. Uraraka stood inside the field with one elimination. Not qualified.
Except the display flickered. Administrative review. The Seijin candidate's final target had been struck by Midoriya's ball, yes. But the Ketsubutsu candidate lunging toward Midoriya had also been hit at almost the same instant by Uraraka's ball, released when the slab shifted. The target flash had occurred within the qualifying window before the one hundredth slot closed. The system delayed. A long second. Two. Then Mera's exhausted voice came over the speakers.
"Simultaneous qualifying hits detected within cutoff window. Candidate Midoriya Izuku and Candidate Uraraka Ochaco qualified. Candidate count adjusted according to exam rule 14-C. First stage complete" The field erupted. Not U. A. Everyone. Arguments. cheers. groans. disbelief. Kaminari in the qualified zone made a sound that was almost a scream and almost a prayer. Jiro, already out, grabbed his sleeve before his face became a weather system. Bakugo shouted "Of course they made it complicated!"
Todoroki said "But they passed" Bakugo snapped "I can see!" Ren's hands loosened on the chair controls. He had not realized he was gripping them. Shinso exhaled beside him.
"Simultaneous" Ren said "Ugly""Valid""Good" On the field, Uraraka stared at the board. Midoriya stared at her. Then both of them started laughing. Not loudly. Not long. Just enough to prove their bodies had not become paperwork. Iida, from the qualified boundary, bowed so sharply it looked painful. Yaoyorozu covered her mouth with both hands. Mina cried openly and claimed nothing. Kirishima shouted "That was so cool!" and then immediately added "No pressure!" Asui smiled.
"Too late. ribbit" Aizawa in the observation area closed his eyes for one second. Kurose sat down. Recovery Girl looked at Ren's monitor, then at the field, then at the ceiling as if daring any god or administrator to make a comment. Mizushima smiled.
"First stage passed" Aizawa opened his eyes.
"Barely" Kurose said "Barely counts" Recovery Girl tapped her cane.
"Barely still needs water" On the field, staff began directing qualified candidates toward the exit routes and eliminated candidates toward separate processing. U. A. gathered not as a clump, but because the route brought them together. Bakugo was already there, arms crossed.
"You idiots waited until the last decimal" Midoriya breathed hard.
"Sorry" Bakugo's glare sharpened.
"What did we say about sorry?" Midoriya stopped.
"Right. no apology. qualified" Uraraka leaned forward with hands on knees.
"Qualified" Iida arrived at her side.
"Simultaneous cutoff rule. extremely fortunate and valid" Kaminari said "Please never say fortunate and valid in that voice again while my heart is trying to leave" Jiro said "Water" Recovery Girl's voice from the side cut through everything.
"All of you. water. maps. no victory collapse" The class obeyed. Even Bakugo drank water with rage. Ren's turn came.
"Qualified zone. first stage complete. two eliminations. one target remaining. left wrist quieting. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. proof present but not driving. map present" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good" Shinso said "Qualified zone. first stage complete. two eliminations. no targets lost. Quirk used once. throat fine. discomfort present. map present""Good" Midoriya said "Qualified zone. first stage complete. right forearm tense. breathing high. apology impulse present. map present""Good" Uraraka said "Qualified zone. first stage complete. shoulders shaking. laughing and crying impulse. map present""Good" One by one. All of them. Maps before joy. Water before symbolism. The field had moved.
They had moved with it. First stage complete. Not the exam. Not yet. But the door behind them had closed. And every U. A. candidate who had entered had crossed it.
