The next board was cruel because it was true before anyone had time to prepare for it. FIRST DOES NOT MEAN WORTH MORE, LAST DOES NOT MEAN ABANDONED, PRIORITY IS NOT AFFECTION, GOOD TRIAGE FEELS UNFAIR No one spoke for several seconds. Then Kaminari sat down on the floor. Aizawa looked at him.
"Problem?" Kaminari pointed at the board from below.
"That one needs a chair" Jiro looked down at him.
"You are already on the floor""Emotionally, yes" Sero crouched beside him.
"Do you need rescue?" Kaminari looked at the board again.
"I am low priority but spiritually loud" Mizushima, standing beside Aizawa with her clipboard, wrote something down. Kaminari stared at her.
"Was that bad?" She smiled.
"It was accurate enough to keep" Jiro muttered "Do not encourage him" Aizawa tapped the board.
"Today is triage priority under limited resources" The room became quieter. Gym Gamma had changed again. No target vests. No score windows. No elimination lanes. Instead, the field had been built into three connected disaster zones: a collapsed storefront, a blocked street, and a partially flooded underpass simulated with blue mats and hazard tape. Civilians waited in each zone, some visible, some not.
There were sound cues, fake smoke markers, unstable supports, medical tags, and route cards that would not be revealed until students reached them. Class 1-A stood together. Selected Class 1-B students stood across the field. H. U. C. actors sat or lay in the zones with the stillness of people who had made a profession out of making teenagers uncomfortable. Ren sat at the Provisional Track edge, chair angled toward the field, brace quiet, wrist patch quiet, eyes already mapping too much.
Shinso stood beside him, arms crossed, collar neutral, scarf hanging loose. Recovery Girl sat at the medical station. Kurose stood by the board with a marker in one hand and a face that said she expected everyone to misunderstand at least once. Aizawa said "Yesterday you learned that no changes the route without ending the rescue. Today, priority changes who gets first contact without changing anyone's value" Mizushima stepped forward.
"You will not have enough rescuers for every civilian at once. You will not have enough safe routes for everyone at once. You will not have enough emotional reassurance to make every scared person feel chosen. You will decide. Then you will communicate the decision without making the person who waits feel discarded" Uraraka's face tightened. Midoriya looked down at his hands. Iida inhaled like a man preparing to become a policy document and then stopped himself. Bakugo crossed his arms.
"Choose the one who dies first if ignored" Mizushima looked at him.
"Crude. often correct. incomplete" Bakugo's eye twitched.
"How is that incomplete?"
"Because death is not the only loss. Airway, bleeding, entrapment, panic movement, environment, dependency, mobility, communication, and available resources all affect priority. A loud person may wait. A quiet person may need first. A person with a child may move faster if the child is acknowledged. A person you cannot save first may still need to know why they are waiting" Kurose wrote beneath the board. WAITING NEEDS INFORMATION Ren looked at that line. Waiting needed information.
Waiting without information became a room. A cell. A table. A bed. A door that might not open. His wrist patch pulsed once. He pressed two fingers to it. Map. Gym Gamma. chair. board. waiting. civilians. Class 1-A. Class 1-B. Aizawa. Kurose. Mizushima. Recovery Girl. Shinso. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. pressure. no gate. map present. Recovery Girl's eyes found him. She did not interrupt. Good. Aizawa pointed at the board again.
"Your first instinct will be to help the person who makes you feel most needed. Do not obey that instinct blindly" Kaminari whispered from the floor "Spiritually loud civilian catching strays" Jiro nudged him with her foot.
"Get up" He stood. Mostly. Mizushima looked at Ren and Shinso.
"Provisional Track will observe the first run. Second run includes Shinso. Third includes Ren. Full integration after that if medical and conduct conditions hold" Ren nodded.
"Accepted" Shinso said "Annoyingly sequenced" Aizawa said "Correctly sequenced""Still annoying""Training often is" Bakugo muttered "Everything is a wall quote now" Kurose wrote nothing. That was mercy. The first run assigned Class 1-A without Provisional Track. The scenario began with seven civilians. One loud adult trapped near the storefront, yelling about being unable to feel their hand. One silent teenager sitting against the underpass wall, eyes open, one hand on their ribs.
One child crying near the blocked street. One adult calling for the child from behind a foam barrier. One elderly person refusing to move without a cane. One unconscious dummy under a tilted shelf. One ambulatory civilian trying to help everyone else and making the route worse. Class 1-A had ninety seconds to triage, stabilize, and move two civilians to safe zones while preventing deterioration in the others. Aizawa said "Begin" Noise hit immediately. The loud adult shouted first.
"My hand! I can't feel my hand! Help me!" Midoriya moved toward them. Too fast. Uraraka caught his sleeve.
"Silent check" He stopped. Good. Yaoyorozu called "Jiro, silent teen. Asui, underpass route. Iida, moving civilian. Bakugo, shelf stability. Todoroki, no ice until route confirmed" Bakugo snarled "Do not command me like support furniture" But he moved toward the shelf. Good. Iida intercepted the ambulatory civilian.
"Stop. You are making the route unsafe" The actor snapped "I am helping!" Iida inhaled. Then corrected.
"You are trying to help. Right now your movement blocks rescuers. Stand at green tape and report what you saw" The actor hesitated. Then moved. Good. Jiro reached the silent teen.
"Can you point to pain?" No response. Eyes open. Breathing shallow.
"Silent urgent. ribs possible. need tag" Yaoyorozu moved. Midoriya changed route toward the silent teen. Mizushima's pen moved. The crying child screamed louder.
"My mom!" Uraraka flinched. Todoroki's left hand twitched. The adult behind the barrier shouted "I am here!" Kirishima moved toward the barrier. Bakugo reached the shelf and saw the unconscious dummy.
"Unconscious under shelf! Need brace!" Mina, caught between the child and loud adult, froze for half a second. Kaminari saw.
"Loud adult, we hear you! Hand problem reported! Stay seated!" The loud adult yelled back.
"My hand!" Kaminari's voice shook.
"Reported! Stay seated!" Good. Not enough. Asui called from above.
"Underpass route has water hazard. silent teen first if breathing shallow" Yaoyorozu placed a medical tag.
"Silent teen priority one. child separated but breathing and mobile. loud adult priority pending circulation. unconscious under shelf priority one if airway compromised" Too many priority ones. The room felt it. Midoriya arrived at the silent teen.
"May I check—" Jiro cut in.
"No response" Midoriya nodded.
"Checking breathing" Bakugo shouted from shelf.
"Dummy airway clear! shelf unstable but held!" Kirishima reached the barrier and started moving foam before checking whether the adult behind it was actually trapped or just blocked. Mizushima's pen moved again. Aizawa watched. The timer hit forty seconds. Class 1-A split. Too much. The child moved toward the adult voice and stepped into a yellow hazard zone. Todoroki called "Stop. hazard" The child kept crying. Uraraka moved in, crouched, did not touch.
"Your mom can hear you. You are at yellow tape. Come to my hand so we can reach her safely" The child stopped. Good. The elderly person with the cane began standing. Sero intercepted.
"Wait. Where does it hurt?"
"My cane""That is not a body part" Mizushima's eyebrow rose. Sero winced.
"Correction. The cane matters. If you stand without it, you may fall. I am getting the cane or support before you move" Better. The run ended with the silent teen stabilized but not moved, the child stopped at hazard line, the unconscious dummy braced, the loud adult still yelling, the elderly civilian not moved, and only one civilian actually transported to safe zone. The buzzer sounded. Everyone looked frustrated. Mizushima smiled.
"That was realistic" Kaminari whispered "Realistic is mean" Aizawa said "Reports" Yaoyorozu went first.
"We had too many priority-one calls because we lacked a shared hierarchy after assessment" If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. Jiro added "Silent teen needed early check. That was correct. But I did not communicate whether they needed transport or stabilization" Bakugo said "Unconscious dummy airway clear. shelf unstable. I called brace but not priority after airway" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" Kirishima looked down.
"I moved barrier before checking whether the adult needed extraction first. I wanted to reunite them with the child" Mizushima said "Why?"
"Because the child was scared""And?"
"That made reunion feel like rescue" Mizushima nodded.
"Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is not first" Kurose wrote: REUNION IS NOT ALWAYS FIRST RESCUE Uraraka swallowed.
"I almost picked the child first because crying made it feel like worse harm" Mizushima said "Crying matters. Breathing matters more" No one liked hearing it. Good. Aizawa turned toward Ren and Shinso.
"Observers. One sentence each" Shinso spoke first.
"They had information but did not update priority out loud" Kurose wrote: UPDATE PRIORITY OUT LOUD Ren looked at the field.
"They treated waiting civilians as paused instead of still changing" Silence. Mizushima wrote that one herself. WAITING CIVILIANS ARE STILL CHANGING Aizawa nodded.
"Keep both" The second run included Shinso. His role was not command. Aizawa made that clear three times because everyone had started looking at him like a voice system. Shinso hated this correctly. The board changed. RESPONDER TRIAGEVOICE CONTACT DOES NOT MEAN COMMANDWAITING NEEDS INFORMATIONREFUSAL CHANGES PRIORITY BUT NOT VALUE Shinso entered the field with Iida, Jiro, Uraraka, Bakugo, Asui, and Yaoyorozu. The same scenario, altered locations. Aizawa said "Begin" Noise rose.
The loud adult screamed about hand numbness. The silent teen sat under the underpass. The child cried. The unconscious dummy was now partially hidden. The elderly civilian refused to leave without a cane. The ambulatory helper moved toward the wrong zone. This time, Shinso did not approach a civilian first. He listened. That was new for the field. Jiro called "Silent teen shallow breathing. priority assessment" Shinso turned toward the loud adult.
"Hand numbness reported. You are heard. Stay seated. We are checking breathing first. I will return or assign contact" The adult shouted "But my hand!"
"Your hand matters. Breathing check is first" He did not ask a question. No Quirk risk. Good. Iida intercepted the moving helper.
"You want to help. stand at green tape and report what you saw" The helper resisted. Shinso looked but did not take over. Good. Bakugo reached the unconscious dummy.
"Airway blocked by foam piece. clearing now" Everything shifted. Shinso's voice carried.
"Priority update. unconscious airway blocked. Bakugo clearing. silent teen assessment continues. loud adult waiting with hand numbness. Kaminari not in field" Kaminari from observation whispered "Why mention me?" Jiro, in field, shouted "Because he remembered who usually handles loud" Kaminari whispered "I feel seen and unemployed" Asui reached the silent teen.
"Breathing shallow but airway clear. ribs likely. stabilization first. no move yet" Shinso called "Priority update. unconscious airway first. silent teen stabilize. child route after hazard check" The crying child screamed louder. Uraraka moved toward them.
"Your adult can hear you. You are not first because someone cannot breathe well. You still matter. Come to green tape so we can reach both safely" The child actor hesitated. Then crawled toward her. The adult behind the barrier shouted "Why are you not getting me out?" Shinso turned.
"Because barrier movement may drop debris and your child is moving to safe tape. You are waiting, not abandoned" The adult went quiet for one second. Good. Not calm. Informed. The elderly person stood without the cane.
"Cane!" Sero was not in field. Iida started toward them but was tied with the helper. Shinso looked at Yaoyorozu.
"Cane substitute?" Yaoyorozu created a simple support bar after saying "Support bar. not permanent cane. may I place it beside you?" The elderly actor nodded. Good. The run ended with two civilians moved, two stabilized, one waiting with information, and one loud adult still angry but not crawling into danger. The buzzer sounded. Shinso exhaled.
"Map. Gym Gamma. field. throat moderate. collar helpful. no Quirk activation. priority updates. discomfort at telling child not first. map present" Mizushima nodded.
"That discomfort is appropriate. Do not erase it. Do not obey it blindly" Kurose wrote: DISCOMFORT CAN INFORM WITHOUT COMMANDING Aizawa looked at Class 1-A.
"What changed?" Yaoyorozu said "Priority updates prevented emotional drift" Iida nodded.
"Waiting civilians were informed, reducing unsafe movement" Uraraka looked at the child actor.
"Saying not first while saying still matter felt awful" Mizushima said "Yes" Uraraka looked up.
"That is not correction?"
"No. That is the job" The room held it. Shinso looked at the board. Waiting needs information. Last does not mean abandoned. He had not made them first. He had not made them nothing. That was a narrow line. He hated how useful it was. Phase three included Ren. The board changed. STABILIZER TRIAGEDO NOT HOLD WHAT SHOULD WAITDO NOT WAIT ON WHAT MAY FALLSHORT CONTACT MUST SERVE PRIORITYRELEASE DOES NOT END RESPONSIBILITY Ren read the lines slowly. Do not hold what should wait. Do not wait on what may fall.
Short contact must serve priority. Release does not end responsibility. His wrist patch stayed quiet. That almost made it worse. Mizushima looked at him.
"This run includes one civilian who asks for your help first and one structure that needs your role first. They are not the same priority" Ren nodded.
"Expected" Recovery Girl said "Contact maximum three seconds. If you use Graft Lattice brace twice, run ends. If gate spreads, run ends. If proof appears, you say it" Ren swallowed.
"Accepted" Aizawa looked at him.
"Role""Stabilizer. short controlled contact. priority support. not comfort holding. release with outcome to civilian then map to staff" Mizushima nodded.
"Begin" Ren entered with Yaoyorozu, Asui, Todoroki, Mina, and Kendo as support candidate. The scenario had four civilians. One loud adult near a clear route, arm pain, asking for Ren by description.
"You! Chair boy! Help me! You look less scary!" The line struck oddly. Less scary. Not stronger. Not useful. Less scary. Another civilian lay silent under a tilted sign. A third refused to move without a child's backpack. A fourth sat behind a barrier saying they could wait. The tilted sign shifted. Asui called "Silent under sign. priority" The loud adult reached toward Ren.
"Help me first! I asked you!" Ren stopped. Everything in him wanted to answer the ask. Because being chosen kindly was its own trap. He breathed.
"My role is needed at the sign first. Mina will stay with you. You are waiting, not abandoned" The adult shouted "But I asked you!" Ren's chest tightened.
"I heard you. Sign may fall first. Mina" Mina moved in.
"I am Mina. I am staying. Your arm matters. We are checking the sign because it can get worse faster" Good. Ren moved to the sign. Silent civilian. no response. sign unstable.
"Contact support. sign only. silent civilian under hazard. Kendo brace ready" Kendo nodded.
"Ready" Ren touched the support. Pain. Gate. Stop. One.
"Sign stable. civilian unresponsive. no movement until brace" Two. Kendo was delayed by debris. Three wanted proof. No.
"Release warning. no brace yet. sign still unstable. I need secondary support now" Todoroki created a small ice wedge under the sign support without expanding the cold zone.
"Support wedge placed" Ren released.
"Contact ended. wedge holding. civilian still under sign. outcome. sign not falling now. map to staff. gate local. pain present. no body-map loss" Mizushima's pen moved. Outcome before map. Good. The backpack civilian refused to move. Yaoyorozu asked "What does the backpack contain?"
"My brother's medicine" Priority changed. Not affection. Information. Yaoyorozu called "Medication backpack. retrieval may support second civilian" Kendo moved. The waiting civilian behind the barrier said "I can wait" Too quiet. Ren looked that way. Waiting civilians still changing.
"Asui, barrier civilian quiet. recheck" Asui moved. The actor behind barrier had a hidden red tag.
"Red tag. breathing shallow. priority shift" Mina still held loud adult contact.
"Arm adult waiting with information. stable" Ren looked at the sign, the barrier, the backpack, the loud adult. Too many. Not enough. Priority. Not affection. He called "Priority update. barrier red tag now first after sign stabilized. backpack medicine retrieval second if route safe. arm adult stable with Mina. sign civilian held by wedge pending extraction" Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Good. Legible.
The run ended with barrier civilian moved first, sign civilian stabilized, backpack retrieved by Kendo, arm adult still angry but informed. The buzzer sounded. Ren's hands trembled. Recovery Girl said "Map""Gym Gamma. chair. sign contact once. left wrist gate local. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. barrier red tag priority shift. arm adult asked me first. did not go first. guilt. map present" Mizushima looked at him.
"What did you learn?" Ren looked toward the arm actor.
"Being chosen does not make them first" The room went still. Kurose wrote: BEING CHOSEN DOES NOT MAKE THEM FIRST Hana, from the side observation seats, covered her mouth. Daichi looked at the floor. Recovery Girl's face softened for half a second and then returned to medical severity. Mizushima nodded.
"And?" Ren breathed.
"Making someone wait after they chose me requires information""Good" Kurose wrote that too. CHOSEN AND WAITING NEEDS INFORMATION The full integration run came last. Everyone expected it. No one wanted it. That meant it was time. Aizawa looked at Class 1-A, Ren, and Shinso.
"Two minutes. eight civilians. Class 1-B environmental pressure. H. U. C. evaluation. Objective. correct triage, two extractions, three stabilizations, waiting civilians informed, priority updates spoken. No one becomes everyone's rescuer" The last sentence landed. No one becomes everyone's rescuer. Midoriya looked at the floor. Ren looked at his hands. Shinso looked at the board. Bakugo rolled his shoulders.
"Finally" Aizawa stared at him. Bakugo clicked his tongue.
"Not finally like stupid. finally like doing the thing""Better" Mizushima said "Begin" The field erupted. A loud adult demanded help. A child cried. A silent teen slumped. A trapped adult called from behind a barrier. An unconscious dummy lay under a shelf. A medication bag was across a hazard line. An ambulatory helper moved wrong. An elderly person refused to leave without their cane. Class 1-B shifted routes, closed paths, opened false ones, and added pressure without playing villains.
Yaoyorozu called "Initial assessment. silent and unconscious checks first" Jiro moved silent. Bakugo moved shelf. Shinso took voice contact with loud adult.
"Your pain matters. airway checks first. you are waiting with me" The adult shouted. He did not make them first. Good. Ren moved toward the unconscious shelf only after Bakugo called "Airway blocked. shelf unstable. need stabilizer or brace" Ren answered "Stabilizer coming. maximum three. brace follow" He reached the shelf. Contact. Pain. Gate. Stop.
"Contact active. shelf stable. Bakugo clearing airway" Bakugo cleared foam.
"Airway clear!" Ren called "Release in one. brace needed" Kirishima moved.
"Brace taking" Ren released.
"Outcome. shelf held by Kirishima. airway clear. map. gate local. pain present" Good. Shinso heard the elderly civilian refusing without cane.
"Iida, cane route?" Iida answered "Cane behind yellow tape. Sero retrieve with tape" Sero retrieved. Elderly civilian moved. Good. The medication bag became a problem when the loud adult revealed insulin. Priority shift. Shinso called "Medication relevant. Kaminari, bag route with Tokage support" Kaminari shouted "Medication bag route!" Tokage from Class 1-B split-hand retrieved. Good. The child ran toward the trapped adult. Uraraka intercepted at distance.
"Your adult is behind the barrier. We reach them by green route. You are not first because shelf airway was first. You still matter. Come to my hand" The child came. Good. The trapped adult shouted "Why is no one getting me?" Todoroki, near the barrier, answered.
"Barrier movement may drop debris. You are waiting, not abandoned. We are stabilizing shelf and checking medicine. I am marking your route" Small ice marker. No overuse. Good. The silent teen had shallow breathing. Jiro called "Silent teen priority. needs move after shelf" Yaoyorozu answered "Priority update. shelf airway clear, silent teen move next, medication retrieval parallel, trapped adult waiting with route marker" Legible.
Ren was backing from shelf when the ambulatory helper tried to lift debris near the trapped adult. Bakugo shouted "Stop!" They did not. Shinso was too far. Iida was closer but blocked. Ren saw the debris shift. No contact needed. information.
"Helper moving debris. barrier risk. Todoroki, left support" Todoroki placed small ice wedge.
"Asui, pull helper back verbally" Asui called "You are trying to help. debris is connected. step back to green tape" The helper hesitated. Then stepped back. No Quirk. Good. The timer hit ninety seconds. Two extractions required. Silent teen moved by Midoriya and Jiro. Child moved with Uraraka to safe zone. Medication bag retrieved. Shelf stabilized. Trapped adult waiting with information. Loud adult waiting with Shinso. Elderly civilian moving with cane support. Good. Then H. U. C. made it worse.
The loud adult grabbed Shinso's sleeve.
"Do not leave me last!" Shinso stopped. Physical contact. Not danger. Boundary. He looked at the hand. Then at the civilian.
"You are not last. You are stable and waiting because others can worsen faster. I will tell you before I leave" The actor did not release. Shinso did not pull away sharply.
"Kaminari, take voice contact with loud adult. They need waiting information. I need route check" Kaminari moved.
"Taking voice contact. You are stable and waiting. Not abandoned" The actor slowly released Shinso's sleeve. Good. Ren saw that. No disappearing. Reassignment. The buzzer sounded at two minutes. End. Silence. Everyone was breathing hard. Mizushima's clipboard was full. Aizawa looked at the field. Recovery Girl looked at Ren. Kurose looked at Shinso. Vlad King looked at both classes. Mizushima spoke.
"Two extractions completed. Four stabilizations maintained. One medication retrieval completed. Waiting civilians informed. Priority updates spoken. Emergency escalation avoided except structural stabilization. Civilian actors report mixed fear but clear information" The class held its breath. She smiled.
"Passable" The room exploded halfway. Aizawa's scarf snapped up.
"Contain" The room contained. Barely. Kaminari whispered "Passable is beautiful" Jiro whispered "Do not make passable weird""It is too late" Mizushima continued "Not excellent. Passable. That is a compliment at this stage" Iida looked like he might frame the word. Mina looked tearful. Bakugo looked annoyed and satisfied. Midoriya looked relieved and then caught himself, turning the relief into a breath rather than a burden. Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Map""Gym Gamma. chair. shelf contact. left wrist gate local. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. one contact. one priority update. guilt low. tired. map present" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Acceptable" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Map""Gym Gamma. throat moderate. collar helpful. no Quirk. sleeve grabbed. reassigned contact. anger low. discomfort. map present" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Mizushima looked at them both.
"What did today teach?" Shinso said "Waiting information prevents abandonment from becoming the only story" Kurose wrote. Ren said "Priority is not affection" Mizushima nodded.
"And first?" Ren looked at the board.
"First does not mean worth more" Shinso added "Last does not mean abandoned" Aizawa wrote both again at the bottom. Then Bakugo, because the universe liked strange endings, muttered "Passable means keep going" Everyone looked at him. He glared.
"What?" Kurose wrote it. PASSABLE MEANS KEEP GOING Bakugo's soul left his body for one second.
"You are all impossible" Aizawa capped the marker.
"Training ends. Eat" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Best board line" After training, Ren slept for thirty-seven minutes. Not collapse. Sleep. When he woke, Hana was sitting beside him with red eyes and a steady smile.
"You did not go first because they asked" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"No""Was it hard?"
"Yes" Daichi, sitting near the desk, said "Good hard?" Ren breathed.
"Necessary hard" He added to his board: PRIORITY IS NOT AFFECTION BEING CHOSEN DOES NOT MAKE THEM FIRST WAITING NEEDS INFORMATION Across the wing, Shinso added: LAST DOES NOT MEAN ABANDONED WAITING INFORMATION PREVENTS ABANDONMENT FROM BECOMING THE ONLY STORY He stared at the second line. Too long. Too true. He kept it anyway. At dinner, Ren came for six minutes and fifty-one seconds. Not because he was worse.
Because thirty-seven minutes of sleep had left his body heavy, and seven forty-three would have been proof. Bakugo noticed.
"Different ugly" Ren nodded.
"Body map""Good" Shinso sat at the edge and did not comment. Kaminari almost did. Jiro's foot stopped him under the table. He whispered "Waiting information?" Jiro whispered back "Information is he chose the number. You can survive without more" Kaminari nodded solemnly.
"Learning" Todoroki offered tea.
"Available. no hierarchy" Bakugo stared at him.
"Tea has hierarchy now?" Todoroki considered.
"No. That was the point" No one knew what to do with that. The common room board gained a final line beneath the exam date after dinner. FIRST IS A ROUTENOT A RANK No one removed it. The exam would ask them to choose. It would not give them enough time, enough hands, enough certainty, or enough comfort. It would put crying next to bleeding, fear next to silence, attachment next to airway, refusal next to collapse, and ask them who came first. That question could make heroes cruel if they answered it wrong.
First was not worth more. Last was not abandoned. Priority was not affection. It was a route through harm. And if they could speak that clearly enough, maybe the people waiting would still know they had not been left behind.
