Chương 81: The Weight of a Bag

The first official camp document Ren received after approval was not heroic. It was a packing list. That felt appropriate. A life-changing door should have opened with thunder, or at least with a speech from Nezu about thresholds and civilization. Instead, Kurose placed a three-page document on his desk during homeroom and said "Read before reacting" Ren looked at the title. SUMMER TRAINING CAMP — REQUIRED ITEMS AND RESTRICTED ITEMS Required items. Uniforms. Training clothes. Sleepwear. Toiletries. Towels.
Rain gear. Indoor shoes. Outdoor shoes. Reusable water bottle. Personal medication. Medical forms. Emergency contact sheet. Notebook. Writing tools. Laundry bag. Flashlight. Spare socks. Spare socks. The absurdity of it struck harder than the approval stamp had.
He was going to a training camp with Hero Course students, under medical restrictions, with fragment protocol active, in a location secret enough that staff refused to say it aloud yet, while some unknown threat sat in the back of his skull like pressure before a storm. And he needed spare socks. Sano leaned over his desk.
"Why do socks make it worse?" Ren did not look up.
"Because socks are real" Sano nodded solemnly.
"I understand emotionally and not intellectually" Arai looked at her own list.
"Socks prevent blisters. Blisters affect movement. Movement affects evacuation. Socks are structurally relevant" Sano stared at her.
"You have weaponized socks" Kenta said "She is correct" Shinso sat beside Ren with his own list and a face like the paper had insulted him personally.
"My list says labeled personal items" Ren glanced over.
"So does mine""I refuse to become a labeled personal item person" Kurose said from the front "Your refusal is noted and irrelevant" Shinso closed his eyes.
"She predicted the objection""Yes" Ren said"Terrible" Kurose tapped the board.
"Camp preparation begins today. This is not vacation planning. This is logistics. Logistics are not less important because they lack emotional drama" Sano raised his hand.
"Can logistics have emotional drama?"
"Yes. Your goal is to reduce it""Ambitious" The board already held three headings. PACKING ROLE REVIEW PRE-DEPARTURE STABILITY Under them, Kurose wrote one more. APPROVED IS NOT SAFE The room became quieter. Ren's pen moved before he decided. Approved is not safe. He had written it already. Seeing it on the board made it larger and less private. Kurose turned.
"Approval means the structure currently supports movement. It does not mean danger is gone. It does not mean restrictions are decorative. It does not mean you can improvise your way out of procedure because you feel better on the day of departure" Several students looked at Ren. Several did not because they had learned. Shinso stared at the board.
"Does this lecture apply to all of us or the conditional section?" Kurose looked at him.
"Yes""Still hate that answer""Still using it" She lifted a second packet.
"Conditional candidates receive additional documents. Akiyama. Shinso" Ren stood. Shinso stood too. They walked to the desk under the attention of the class, not hostile but present. Attention had weight even when kind. Ren reported internally first. Yellow. Social visibility. No heat. Kurose handed him a packet clipped in blue. CONDITIONAL CAMP PARTICIPATION — STUDENT COPY Inside were the same conditions he had signed.
But somehow, in student copy form, they felt less like conference architecture and more like something he would have to carry in his bag. Role: Communication Anchor / Hazard Map Support. No unsupervised routes. No night movement without staff escort. No high-intensity combat sparring. No deliberate Scar Tissue provocation. No endurance challenges. No red-zone physical extraction role. No use as durability example. Daily status check. Daily recovery report. Emergency extraction authority active.
At the bottom of the first page, in bold: IF CONDITIONS CONFLICT WITH PERSONAL AMBITION, CONDITIONS WIN. Ren looked up slowly. Kurose's face did not change. Shinso's shoulders shook once. Not laughter. Suppressed horror. His packet had a similar line. IF CONDITIONS CONFLICT WITH PERSONAL PRIDE, CONDITIONS WIN. Shinso stared.
"This packet is rude" Kurose said "It is accurate""That is what makes it rude" Ren returned to his seat with the packet. The paper felt heavier than its pages. After homeroom, camp preparation turned the school into a machine that looked almost like excitement from a distance. Hero Course students talked about training schedules, what kind of terrain the Pussycats might use, whether the food would be terrible, and how many times Aizawa would threaten expulsion before breakfast.
Some students treated the location secrecy like a mystery. Others treated it like an insult. Kaminari attempted to build a theory based on climate, possible travel time, and whether Pixie-Bob had mentioned altitude. Yaoyorozu corrected his assumptions twice before realizing she was helping and stopping herself. Kirishima asked if extra protein bars counted as personal medication. Recovery Girl said no. Bakugo said that was obvious. Kirishima said emotional support protein was real. Bakugo told him to die.
Kirishima said he would survive with balanced macros. Ren wrote none of this down. He wanted to. It was useful social terrain. It was also not his assignment. His assignment was camp role review. He sat with Shinso, Iida, Uraraka, and Yaoyorozu in a side classroom during lunch. Kurose supervised. Aizawa observed from the doorway. The table held maps without location names, blank route diagrams, status cards, laminated emergency codes, and a small stack of colored tags. Ren's tag was blue.
COMMUNICATION ANCHOR Shinso's was gray. DISRUPTION SUPPORT / PEER AWARENESS CONDITIONAL Iida's was white. ROUTE DISCIPLINE SUPPORT Uraraka's was green. BODY-LIMIT REPORTING SUPPORT Yaoyorozu's was gold. SEQUENCE SUPPORT Shinso picked up his tag.
"Gray?" Aizawa said "Neutral visibility""Sounds depressing""Accurate to you" Shinso glared. Uraraka turned her green tag over.
"I like mine""You would" Shinso said"It is cheerful""It says body-limit reporting support""Cheerfully" Iida held his tag like a formal document. Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
"I will fulfill my role carefully" Aizawa looked at him.
"Do not salute the tag" Iida lowered his hand immediately. Ren looked at his blue tag. Communication Anchor. He kept the map and gave the next safe action. He did not reach every hazard. He did not need to reach it to affect it. Yaoyorozu studied the diagram.
"How will rotating support work?" Kurose placed five cards in a row.
"Ren's camp schedule will have staff supervision at all times. Peer awareness is supplemental, not primary. Morning hazard map drills may include Shinso or Iida depending on the block. Terrain observation may include Iida or Yaoyorozu. Body-limit reporting practice may include Uraraka. Joint reflection with Midoriya limited and supervised. Bakugo is not peer awareness support" Uraraka's mouth twitched. Shinso said "For the survival of all involved" Aizawa said "Yes" No one disagreed.
Kurose continued "Peer awareness means you may prompt status if you observe signs. It does not mean you own the response. It does not mean you become responsible for preventing all escalation. It does not mean you override staff. It does not mean you hide your own strain to support someone else" Uraraka nodded.
"I need that written too" Kurose handed her a sheet.
"It is" Uraraka blinked.
"Oh" Shinso muttered "She has anticipated every objection" Kurose said "Not every. Sano still surprises me" From the hallway, Sano called "Thank you?" Kurose did not answer. Ren looked at the rotating support cards. Something in him loosened. Not because he trusted the system completely. Because Shinso was not the only name. Because his yes did not make one person less free.
"Status" Kurose asked"Yellow. Relief. No heat. Rotating structure helps""Why?"
"Because support does not become ownership" Kurose nodded.
"Good" Shinso looked at his gray tag and said nothing. But his shoulders dropped. Slightly. The afternoon packing seminar was led by Thirteen. This was somehow exactly right. Thirteen treated packing as disaster preparedness, personal dignity, and future kindness all at once. Their voice filled the classroom gently as they displayed a simple duffel bag on the front table.
"A bag is a plan you carry with your body" Sano whispered "They started strong" Arai whispered "Accurate" Thirteen continued "Packing badly can create avoidable stress. Avoidable stress becomes poor decisions. Poor decisions become risk. Therefore, we pack with care" They removed items one by one. Clothes. Medical forms. Water bottle. Small first aid basics. Flashlight. Rain gear. Notebook. Snacks. Labeled medication pouch. Dirty laundry bag. Ren copied the list even though he had the printed version.
Copying made it real in a different way. Thirteen held up a towel.
"Bring the recommended number. Not zero. Not six" Ren froze. Several heads turned toward him. Hana. Somehow, Hana had contaminated the school. Kurose's face remained innocent. Too innocent. Shinso slowly turned toward Ren.
"Six towels?" Ren stared forward.
"No comment" Bakugo, three rows back, said "Who the hell packs six towels?" Uraraka whispered "Someone anxious" Bakugo muttered "That checks out" Thirteen continued as if no towel-based exposure had occurred.
"Do not bring unauthorized support items, unapproved training equipment, weapons, medical devices not listed, or personal Quirk-modification tools" Kaminari raised his hand.
"What counts as personal Quirk-modification tools?" Aizawa, from the back, said "If you have to ask, do not bring it" Kaminari lowered his hand.
"Fair" Thirteen's last item was a small card.
"Each of you will pack one personal grounding item. Something safe, non-disruptive, allowed by staff, and not irreplaceable. Not because you are children. Because unfamiliar environments test nervous systems before they test strength" The room went quiet. A grounding item. Not heroic. Not childish. Useful. Ren looked at his bag list. He did not know what he would bring. The Anchor card? His role statement? A family note? Something not irreplaceable. That ruled out too much. Shinso leaned toward him.
"Bentaro" Ren almost smiled.
"My father would send a rescue party""Six towels and an umbrella""Efficient""Emotionally catastrophic" At home, the packing list became a family event despite everyone pretending it was not. Hana placed the required items on the living room floor in neat groups. Daichi printed three copies of the list, then admitted one was for checking, one was for rechecking, and one was for not touching unless panic occurred.
Shinso sat cross-legged near the table with his own bag because the Akiyama apartment had become the unofficial logistical annex of U. A. whether anyone acknowledged it or not. Ren stood in the doorway and looked at the piles. Clothes. Training wear. Medical pouch. Forms. Socks. Towels. Exactly two. He looked at Hana. She looked back.
"Two""Good""I wanted four""I know""Six was emotional""I also know" Shinso lifted one towel.
"This towel appears stable" Daichi nodded.
"Load-bearing cotton" Ren closed his eyes.
"You are all impossible" Hana handed him the clothing checklist.
"You pack your own bag. We observe only if asked" Ren looked at the piles. That mattered. A lot. He had expected them to pack around him, because fear often wore care's face and care sometimes forgot hands belonged to the person leaving. But Hana stepped back. Daichi stepped back. Shinso looked pointedly at his own bag. Ren knelt. He packed. Shirts. Folded badly. Hana said nothing. Training clothes. Extra socks. Medical pouch in an easy-access side pocket. Status cards. Role tag. Notebook. Writing tools. Rain gear.
He paused at the grounding item. Hana noticed but did not speak. Ren stood and went to his desk. The Anchor card sat beside his role statement. The card was not irreplaceable. Sano could make another, though the first one had history. The role statement mattered, but it was paper. Still, bringing the original felt like bringing a wound with instructions. He opened the drawer and found the small blue card Kurose had given him after the first role drill.
COMMUNICATION ANCHOR I keep the map and give the next safe action. On the back, in his own handwriting: I do not need to reach it to affect it. That one. He brought it back to the living room.
"Grounding item" he said Hana nodded. Daichi looked at the card.
"Good" Shinso looked away.
"Annoyingly appropriate" Ren placed it in an inner pocket. Then looked at Shinso's bag.
"Yours?" Shinso's face became unreadable.
"Not decided" Hana did not ask. Daichi did not ask. Ren did not ask. Ten minutes later, Shinso took something small from his pocket. A laminated card. Not one of Sano's. A handwritten strip, clearly cut from a larger page. I can act before they answer. He slid it into his own bag without looking at anyone. No one spoke. That was correct. Dinner happened with half-packed bags in the corner. Hana made food that packed well as leftovers even though they were not leaving that night.
Daichi checked the medication forms once and then stopped because Hana looked at him. Shinso accepted a container to take home and did not argue until after it was in his hands, which made the argument legally irrelevant by household standards. After dinner, Ren's phone buzzed. Midoriya. Are you packing too? Ren looked at the message. Too. Such a small word. He replied: Yes. Socks are making camp real. Midoriya answered almost immediately. I understand this completely. Then another message.
I am bringing a notebook as grounding item but Aizawa-sensei said only one. How do I choose one? Ren read it aloud. Shinso covered his face.
"Tell him to bring one notebook and not an archive" Ren typed: One notebook. Not an archive. Midoriya replied: That sounds like something Aizawa-sensei said. Ren answered: It was Shinso. Midoriya replied: Please thank him. Shinso said "No" Ren typed: He refuses emotionally but accepts functionally. Midoriya sent a thumbs-up. Then Uraraka messaged the group chat Kurose had reluctantly allowed for camp logistics.
I packed snacks and then unpacked half because not carrying the whole group emotionally through food is apparently a thing. Iida replied: That is a wise correction. Kirishima replied: How much snack is heroic? Bakugo replied: Food is food. Stop making it a philosophy. Todoroki replied: This group makes most objects philosophical. Yaoyorozu replied: Packing reflects preparedness, so some philosophy is inevitable. Bakugo replied: I'm muting this.
Sano, somehow included in a separate Cross-Course chat, sent Ren a new card image. SIGNAL: BAG IS PLAN, NOT PROPHECY Ren stared at it. Then saved it. Shinso saw.
"Do not encourage him""Too late""Everything is too late" The next day at school, the camp bags were checked. Not all at once. That would have been chaos. Students brought mock-packed bags for inspection by category. Hero Course complained. Support Course overpacked and had to be physically separated from toolkits. Business Course had the most efficient bags and the least mud-compatible shoes. General Studies students varied wildly. Ren's bag passed with minor notes. Fold clothes better to preserve space.
Move flashlight to top pocket. Put status cards in outer sleeve. No extra notebooks. Recovery Girl checked the medical pouch.
"Good access" Ren nodded.
"Packed myself" Hana had written that in the home note too. Packed own bag. Asked one question. Accepted two towels. No panic packing. Recovery Girl read the note and smiled.
"Two towels is strong family data" Ren said "Please do not make towels a metric" Kurose, nearby, said "Too late" Shinso's bag passed with one note. Label items. He looked personally defeated. Aizawa handed him a marker. Shinso stared at it.
"I hate this""Write your name""I know how labeling works""Then demonstrate" Shinso wrote his name on the inside tags with the expression of someone signing away a civil liberty. Ren watched.
"Stable?" Shinso said "Yellow. Labeled personal items. Identity intact but offended" Aizawa said "Acceptable" The week moved toward departure. Not quickly. Not slowly. With logistical inevitability. Travel day would be Monday. Destination would be disclosed to students at departure. Bags would be loaded under staff supervision. Conditional students would check in before boarding. Parents would receive location through secure guardian channel after arrival confirmation, not before, for security reasons.
Hana hated this. Daichi hated it more quietly. Both accepted it because Nezu had explained the risk and Recovery Girl had added that guardian panic could be entered into the home note column if unreported. Hana had said "Do not threaten me with documentation" Recovery Girl had replied "Then do not make it easy" Ren had never seen Hana respect someone so much while looking murderous. On the final school day before departure, All Might requested a private but brief conversation. Secure room. Kurose present.
No thin-form surprise for anyone unauthorized. Ren arrived with his folder and status chart. All Might stood by the window in hero form at first. The room was secure, but the Symbol still had habits, and perhaps today he needed the shape before letting it go. Kurose closed the door. All Might deflated into Toshinori with a cough he tried to soften. Ren did not comment. Kurose did not either. Her pen did. Toshinori smiled weakly.
"I have been told I am not to make this a speech" Ren looked at Kurose. She said "Correct" Toshinori nodded.
"So I will make it a warning" That was not better. Ren sat.
"Status. Yellow. All Might private meeting. No heat. No fragment" Toshinori's face changed at the report. Not hurt. Understanding.
"Good" Ren waited. Toshinori folded his hands.
"You are leaving U. A. walls under restrictions. That is not small""No""I am not camp staff for your daily role" Ren looked up. He had known. Still. Hearing it made the space shift. Toshinori continued "I will not be there as an answer you can look for" Ren's chest tightened. No heat.
"That may be safer" Toshinori smiled sadly.
"Perhaps" Kurose wrote nothing. Ren appreciated that. Toshinori leaned forward.
"You have been very good at building conditions for your yes. I want you to add one more privately" Ren waited.
"If something happens, do not measure yourself by whether you predicted enough" The words entered too cleanly. Ren's throat tightened. Toshinori's eyes were tired. Older than the Symbol.
"You know too many fragments and not enough futures. That is a cruel combination. If danger comes from a direction you did not see, that is not failure. If danger matches something you feared, that is still not proof you caused it by going" Ren looked down at his hands. No heat. But his fingers had curled. He opened them.
"Status. Yellow-red. Fear. No heat. Fragment responsibility trigger" Kurose wrote. Toshinori's voice softened.
"You are not responsible for every shadow just because some of them have spoken to you before" Ren breathed. Once. Twice.
"That is difficult to believe""I know""Do you believe it?" Toshinori looked at the window. For a moment, the man in the chair was not a Symbol, not a teacher, not the person Midoriya looked at like morning. He was someone who had carried too many cities in his chest and still found rubble in his sleep.
"I am learning late" Ren looked at him. The answer mattered because it was not clean. Toshinori turned back.
"Learn earlier than me if you can" Ren nodded.
"I will try" Kurose said "That is acceptable" Toshinori smiled faintly.
"I also wanted to thank you" Ren stiffened. Toshinori continued "Young Midoriya and Young Bakugo passed through the same gate partly because you named the split before the exam""I did not take the exam""No. You affected it from outside the route" Ren looked at him. I do not need to reach it to affect it. Toshinori had not seen the card. Probably. Maybe Kurose had told him. No. The sentence had become structural. Ren exhaled.
"That helps""Good" Toshinori stood. Carefully. Too carefully.
"One more thing. At camp, stay a person. Not a warning system. Not emergency equipment. Not proof of U. A.'s caution. A person" Ren looked at Kurose. She was looking at him, not the page. He nodded.
"My yes is real only if I remain one" Toshinori smiled.
"There it is" When Ren left the room, his chart entry read: All Might meeting. Yellow-red fragment responsibility trigger. No heat. Reported. Useful warning: not responsible for every shadow. Stable after debrief. Kurose approved the wording. At home that night, the packed bag sat by the door. Not fully. Final items would go in Monday morning. But enough. Real enough. Hana looked at it too often. Daichi pretended not to. Shinso came for dinner, bag inspection complete, labeled items endured, grounding card packed.
He sat at the table with the air of someone who had survived bureaucracy and now required calories as reparations. Hana served rice.
"Last dinner before camp week" Ren said "We return after""I know" Daichi said "Still last before" That was true. The meal was quieter than usual. Not sad. Not celebration. Marking. After dinner, Hana handed Ren a small envelope.
"Grounding item alternative. Not required. Not irreplaceable. You choose" Ren opened it. Inside was a card. Not emotional. Not dramatic. Hana's handwriting. Food before becoming symbolic. On the back, Daichi had written: Route can hold one step at a time. Ren stared. The card blurred slightly. No. Eyes. Not card. Hana said "You do not have to bring it" Daichi added "It is copyable" Ren swallowed.
"I will bring it" Shinso looked away with the intense focus of someone respecting privacy by studying fruit. Hana nodded.
"Good" Ren placed the card beside the Anchor card. Two grounding items? Thirteen had said one. Ren looked at Hana. She saw the problem.
"Take one. Leave one in the bag? Or ask staff" Ren considered. Then took both cards to his folder. The Anchor card was operational. The family card was home. He would ask Kurose in the morning. Trustworthy data included grounding item conflict. Shinso made a small sound. Ren looked at him.
"What?" He slid a card across the table. Not his I can act before they answer card. A copy. On it, in Shinso's handwriting: If I become someone's anchor, I still get to be a person standing on the floor. Ren looked at it. Shinso's ears were red.
"Copy. Not irreplaceable. Do not make a face" Ren did not make a face. He picked it up carefully.
"Thank you""No ceremony""No ceremony" Hana placed fruit in the center of the table like a ceasefire. Daichi looked at Shinso.
"Good card" Shinso closed his eyes.
"I walked into that""Yes" Daichi said The packed bag waited by the door. Bentaro leaned beside it, not coming, obviously, despite Daichi joking once and then stopping when Hana looked at him. Ren wrote three lines before bed. A bag is a plan I carry with my body. Then: The bag is not prophecy. The roster is not destiny. Then: I can bring conditions with me without making them chains. He stopped. Outside, the city was quiet. Inside, the bag remained. Socks. Towels. Role tag. Status cards. Medical forms.
Grounding cards. A plan. Not safety. Not destiny. Movement. In the dark, Ren listened to the apartment breathe around him. Hana in the kitchen checking nothing because everything was checked. Daichi near the door adjusting nothing because Bentaro did not need adjusting. Shinso gone home with labeled items and a support network he had not earned and did not owe. Tomorrow was still home. The day after was departure. Ren closed his eyes. His scars stayed cool. The bag stayed by the door.
For the first time, camp felt less like a door in his mind and more like weight he could lift carefully. Not alone. Not safely. Carefully. For tonight, carefully was enough.
