Morning at camp began before the sun had finished deciding whether it wanted to be kind. Ren woke to wood. That was the first difference. Not ceiling paint. Not apartment plaster. Not the familiar narrow shadow of his own room. Wood beams above him, pale morning light across them, the faint smell of old timber, detergent, and forest damp drifting through a cracked window somewhere across the room. The second difference was noise. Not city noise. Breathing. Sleeping bags shifting. Someone muttering in sleep.
A distant door sliding open. A bird outside that sounded far too awake for the hour. The third difference was that he was still there. Camp. Lodge. Day two. He had arrived by road. That still counted as arriving. Ren lay still and performed the first check before moving. Body. No fever. No scar heat. Mild shoulder stiffness from travel and sleeping on a futon. No nausea. No fragment pressure. No smoke. No branch crack. No hand reaching. Just wood. Just morning. He sat up slowly.
Across the room, Shinso was already awake, staring at the ceiling with the expression of someone personally offended by consciousness. His hair had achieved an impossible camp-specific shape. Ren looked at him.
"Status?" Shinso did not turn.
"Yellow. Woke before alarm. Dislike birds. No Quirk pressure. Social debt low because breakfast has not attacked yet" Ren nodded.
"Good enough" Shinso closed his eyes.
"Too early for your family's language""It travels""Unfortunately" Aizawa's voice came from the hallway.
"Five minutes. Status checks before breakfast" No one in the room had seen him. Everyone believed him. Several students sat up at once. One groaned. Aizawa's voice returned.
"Groaning is not a status report" The groan stopped. Ren almost smiled. Almost. He opened his chart. Sleep: 6h20. Woke twice. No dream retained. No scar heat. Morning state yellow-low. Shoulder stiffness mild. Action: report before breakfast. He paused. Then added: Wood smell noticed. No trigger. Trustworthy data included absence too. He put the chart away and reached for the blue Anchor card in the side pocket of his bag. COMMUNICATION ANCHORI keep the map and give the next safe action.
On the back: I do not need to reach it to affect it. He did not need to read it. He did anyway. Once. Not twice. At the morning check table, Kurose sat with a clipboard, Mandalay stood beside her, and Aizawa looked as if the concept of breakfast had personally failed to justify waking him. Pixie-Bob was already too energetic. Tiger was outside supervising early stretching with the Hero Course students. Ragdoll had somehow found a mug of coffee larger than practical physics should allow.
Recovery Girl appeared on the tablet propped beside Kurose. Her first words were "Show me your hands" Ren held them up. Palms clean. No heat. No ridging. No redness beyond ordinary morning circulation.
"Status""Yellow-low. No heat. No fragment. Sleep six twenty. Shoulder stiffness mild. Appetite unknown""Unknown is not low""I know""Eat before analyzing appetite""Yes" Shinso stepped up next.
"Status. Yellow. Sleep five fifty. Woke three times. Bird irritation. No Quirk pressure. Assistance request dread low because no request yet" Aizawa looked at him.
"Daily travel peer awareness ended last night. New consent needed for morning block" Shinso's face tightened. Right. Daily. Specific. Revocable. Kurose turned to Ren.
"This morning's conditional block is safe-zone hazard mapping from the lower observation deck, followed by peer awareness drill along the service path. Shinso is proposed for awareness range during the second half. Consent?" Ren checked himself. No pressure spike. No heat.
"I consent to Shinso awareness range for morning service path drill. Not sole support. Revocable" Kurose wrote.
"Shinso?" Shinso looked annoyed that procedure mattered. Good.
"I consent to awareness range for morning service path drill. Not handler. Not medical. Revocable. If birds continue, all bets are off" Aizawa said "Birds are outside your authority""Tragic" Kurose wrote anyway.
"Approved" Breakfast was loud. Not because anyone wanted it to be. Because a dining hall full of teenagers who had slept in unfamiliar rooms and knew training would begin soon could not produce silence without force, and Aizawa had apparently decided morning despair was enough punishment. Hero Course ate like people preparing to be hunted by terrain again. Kaminari had one cheek pressed to the table until Iida informed him that digestion and posture had a relationship.
Kirishima looked excited despite visible soreness. Mina stretched her arms above her head and announced that camp food was better than expected. Sero said that made him more afraid. Tokoyami stared at the window and said dawn sharpened the shadow of trial. Sano was not there to be outdramaticed, but Ren felt the spiritual injury on his behalf. Bakugo ate quickly and with purpose. Midoriya ate with one hand and held his notebook closed with the other, which had become a form of visible growth. Todoroki ate quietly.
Yaoyorozu reviewed her schedule without turning it into a second breakfast. Uraraka ate more than usual and looked proud when she noticed. Iida drank water like it was an assignment. Ren ate his own food. Appetite moderate. No nausea. Good. Shinso sat two seats away with his tray and stared at the meal suspiciously. Ren looked at him.
"Camp food?" Shinso said "Good" The word came out flat. Then his face changed because he had said it voluntarily. Uraraka smiled. Shinso pointed at her with chopsticks.
"No supportive face" She tried to stop. Failed.
"Sorry""Worse" Ren wrote in his head, not on paper. Camp food good. Social debt trigger. Then stopped. Not his chart. Not his support role unless asked. Aizawa stood at the front after breakfast.
"Standard Hero Course begins Quirk intensification and terrain application. You will be exhausted. You will not call that unfair. You will not wander. You will not challenge staff. You will not turn camp into a rivalry festival because some of you do not understand the difference between improvement and stupidity" Bakugo leaned back.
"Look somewhere else" Aizawa did not.
"Conditional and modified-route candidates follow assigned schedules. If you compare intensity as value, you will miss the point and possibly lose privileges" Ren felt the line land. Compare intensity as value. Yes. That one was for him too. Kurose took over.
"Cross-Course conditional schedule. Morning: lower observation deck hazard mapping. Midday: rest and tabletop prep. Afternoon: safe-route communication drill and support-structure review. Evening: recovery report. No forest route today" There it was. No forest route today. The Hero Course side exhaled in the opposite direction. They got forest, drills, Quirk limits, exhaustion. Ren got deck, tabletop, safe route. His chest tightened. No heat. Report.
"Yellow. No forest route disappointment. No heat. No image" Kurose wrote.
"Action?"
"Follow assigned schedule. Do not convert intensity into value" Aizawa said "Good" The word helped less than usual. That was data too. The lower observation deck sat behind the lodge, built into the slope above one of the training valleys. From there, the forest opened in layers: near trail, lower ravine, dense tree line, earth-beast training zone, emergency access path, distant ridge. It was not the Beast Forest route from yesterday, but a controlled view of multiple terrain types. The safe zone had a railing.
The railing was sturdy. Ren hated that he noticed. Thirteen stood at the center of the deck with a large terrain diagram. Mandalay stood beside them. Kurose carried charts. Aizawa stood near the stairs, where he could see everyone and somehow also make the stairs feel guilty. The conditional group included Ren, Shinso, two other Cross-Course candidates, and several students from 1-B under modified observation after minor injuries from exams. Kenta joined for route support. Arai joined as systems observer.
Sano had been assigned signal clarity support for a separate communication block and arrived carrying new cards despite explicit instructions to limit props. His first card read: Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. SAFE ZONE ≠ USELESS ZONE Ren stared at it. Sano looked nervous.
"I anticipated emotional resistance" Kurose held out a hand.
"Submit" Sano placed a copy in her palm with the resigned pride of an artist being nationalized. Thirteen seemed pleased.
"That is a good principle" Sano whispered "I have become curriculum again" Arai said "You are adapting""I wanted applause, not documentation" Ren took the card. Safe zone is not useless zone. He placed it beside his notebook. Then reported.
"Yellow. Card useful. No heat" Sano looked like he had been blessed and sentenced. Thirteen began.
"Today's first task. From this deck, identify hazards and support calls for three active training groups. You will not direct those groups. You will not speculate beyond visible information. You will practice safe-zone contribution. A safe zone is not outside the rescue if it preserves the map" Ren wrote that down. A safe zone is not outside the rescue if it preserves the map. Aizawa muttered "There it is again" Mandalay smiled.
"Useful language travels" The first active group appeared below. Uraraka, Iida, Asui, and Shoji moved along a slope drill under Tiger's supervision. The task seemed simple: transport weighted rescue packs across uneven terrain without losing group route integrity. It became less simple when earth constructs rose intermittently from the slope to force rerouting. Ren watched. No analysis beyond visible information. Hazard. Call. Support. Uraraka's movement slowed after the third weight shift. Nausea? Maybe.
Visible sign: hand to stomach, shorter breath, step correction. Call.
"Body-limit check before next lift. Rotate carrier. Do not wait for failure" Thirteen nodded.
"Good. Support?"
"Iida route discipline for stop timing. Shoji load redistribution. Tiger staff oversight" Kurose wrote. No heat. Good. Iida below called something Ren could not hear but could read from posture. The group paused. Shoji redistributed the load. Uraraka breathed. They continued. Ren did not cause that. Maybe staff had trained them already. Maybe Iida saw it. Maybe support structures worked even when he was not the center. Good. Annoying. Good. Second group. Bakugo, Kirishima, Sero, and Kaminari.
The hazard appeared before the group did. Sound. Explosions through trees. Ren's eyes tracked automatically. No. Visible information only. The group emerged near a training clearing where Pixie-Bob had shaped multiple earth beasts with moving limbs. The task seemed to be controlled engagement while preserving a marked civilian path. Bakugo was faster than everyone. Obviously.
He hit hard, then harder, then adjusted because one earth-beast limb fell too close to the marked path and Tiger's voice cracked across the valley like judgment. Bakugo's next blast angled upward instead of outward. Good. Ren wrote: Hazard: output spill toward civilian path. Call: blast angle upward-left, not outward. Support: Sero line control, Kirishima path shield, Kaminari hold unless target isolated. He stopped. Too much? Thirteen looked.
"Within visible data" Kurose nodded.
"Acceptable" Bakugo below shouted something at Sero. Sero answered by webbing one earth-beast arm and pulling it away from the path. Kirishima braced. Kaminari held back, visibly suffering under restraint. Ren almost smiled. Almost. Third group. Midoriya, Todoroki, Yaoyorozu, and Tokoyami. The forest around them was denser. Their task seemed to involve clearing a safe route through a narrow area with limited Quirk output. Todoroki used small ice patches to stabilize mud instead of large walls.
Yaoyorozu created markers, not tools yet. Tokoyami's Dark Shadow moved cautiously under tree shade. Midoriya looked everywhere at once and almost tripped over a root. Ren's right palm warmed. Mild. Root. Branch. Forest. He opened his hand.
"Yellow-red. Root visual plus Midoriya stumble trigger. Mild right palm heat. No image. Continuing observation" Recovery Girl was not on live tablet for this block, but Kurose logged it and said "Proceed if stable" Ren breathed. Heat mild. Stable. He looked again. Hazard: root cluster at low visibility, Midoriya over-scanning. Call: slow visual sweep before step. Assign one path checker. Do not let analysis outrun feet. Support? Yaoyorozu sequence. Todoroki terrain stabilization. Midoriya self-check.
Tokoyami shade warning. He wrote it. Mandalay looked over.
"That is useful" The group below did not hear him. They did not need to. This was practice. Not command. Shinso's task was next. He had to observe the same groups and identify moments where waiting for verbal engagement would be useless. Disruption Support from safe zone. No Quirk use. Just recognition. He watched Bakugo's group first.
"The earth beast does not speak. Obvious. Physical obstruction, line control, terrain manipulation. Verbal Quirk irrelevant" Aizawa said "Less disdain. Same answer" Shinso exhaled.
"Nonverbal target. Use physical route disruption and teammate calls. Do not wait for response""Better" He watched Midoriya's group.
"Midoriya over-scans. A verbal call could help, but if he does not hear, physical route marker is better" Mandalay nodded.
"And if he does hear?"
"Short call. Root. Left. Stop. Not a paragraph" Ren coughed once. Shinso looked at him.
"Not about you""It was adjacent""Acceptable collateral" Kurose wrote. The safe zone became work. Not loud work. Not exhausting work in the way the valley was exhausting. But work. By the end of the first hour, Ren's notebook had nine hazard-call-support lines, three status reports, one heat entry, and no tactical essays. His body had remained behind the railing. His mind had tried to leave it twelve times. He had reported four. Trustworthy data.
At the scheduled break, Pixie-Bob appeared on the deck by climbing from below rather than using the stairs like civilization. Sano whispered "Supervisor violates route" Aizawa said "She is staff""That sounds unfair""It is" Pixie-Bob looked over Ren's notes before Kurose could stop her.
"Good eyes, Akiyama" Ren paused. No kitten. Progress.
"Thank you" She leaned closer.
"Do you hate being up here?" Direct. Too direct. Kurose started to speak. Ren lifted one hand slightly. He could answer.
"Yes" Pixie-Bob smiled. Not cruel. Sharp.
"Good" Ren blinked. She pointed down at the valley.
"If you hated it and pretended you didn't, you'd be useless to me. If you hate it and still map cleanly, I can use the map" Recovery Girl would dislike use. Kurose did dislike it. Her face said so. Pixie-Bob seemed to notice and corrected herself.
"Use the work. Not you. The work" Kurose's face eased by one degree. Ren considered. That correction mattered.
"I can accept that" Pixie-Bob nodded.
"You're not in the forest. You're still in camp. Do not let your pride tell you terrain only counts when it has mud on your shoes" Then she jumped back down from the deck. Aizawa looked after her.
"She could have used the stairs" Mandalay sighed.
"She rarely does" Ren looked at his clean shoes. No mud. Still camp. He wrote: Terrain can count without mud. Shinso leaned over.
"Putting that on a card?"
"Sano will" Sano, from two meters away, lifted his head.
"I heard destiny" Kurose said "No card until after lunch" He deflated. Lunch came with the standard groups returning in waves. Not done for the day. Only rotated. They looked worse than breakfast and better than yesterday. Training had already begun converting shock into rhythm. Uraraka reported nausea two before sitting. Iida praised her and then apologized for praising in a formal tone. She laughed.
Midoriya's knees shook slightly when he stopped moving, and Aizawa pointed to a bench before Midoriya could pretend. Todoroki had mud on both boots and a small burn on one sleeve from controlled heat work. Yaoyorozu looked frustrated but not frozen. Bakugo's hair had leaves in it. No one told him immediately. This became a group survival decision. Kirishima almost did. Sero covered his mouth. Ren watched Bakugo sit with leaves in his hair and a scowl at his tray. Shinso whispered "Hazard-call-support?"
Ren whispered "Hazard: leaves. Call: do not mention. Support: collective restraint" Shinso's shoulders shook. Bakugo looked up.
"What?"
"Nothing" Ren said"Suspicious""Yes" Bakugo narrowed his eyes. Then reached up, found a leaf, and froze. The table went silent. He placed the leaf on the tray. Slowly. Kaminari made a small strangled sound. Bakugo looked at him.
"Laugh and die" Kaminari shook his head violently. Mina, at another table, failed first. Bakugo exploded upward. Aizawa's scarf moved.
"Sit" Bakugo sat. The leaf remained on the tray. Ren wrote nothing. This was not relevant to camp safety. Probably. After lunch, Ren's schedule said rest block. Rest block did not mean optional rest. This had been clarified six times. He sat in a quiet room off the main hall with Shinso, Uraraka, and two other modified-route students. The windows overlooked a small side path near the lodge. The room had mats, water, and a sign written by Mandalay.
REST IS TRAINING IF FATIGUE WOULD CHANGE YOUR DECISIONS Shinso looked at the sign.
"I hate how this camp talks" Uraraka lay on a mat with one arm over her eyes.
"I love this sign""You would""I would" Ren sat against the wall. He did not sleep. That was okay. Rest was not sleep or failure. Rest was no input escalation. He read Hana's card once. Food before becoming symbolic. Route can hold one step at a time. Then he placed it back. Uraraka spoke after ten minutes.
"Akiyama?"
"Yes""Was it hard watching us from the deck?"
"Yes""Was it useful?"
"Yes" She smiled under her arm.
"Good" Shinso groaned.
"The word is everywhere" Uraraka lowered her arm.
"Did you want to be down there?" Ren looked at the ceiling.
"Yes""Do you still think being up there counted?" Ren took longer.
"Yes""Good" He turned his head.
"You are doing it on purpose" She smiled.
"Yes" Shinso said "Supportive face evolved into supportive word attack" Uraraka put her arm back over her eyes.
"Resting" The afternoon safe-route drill brought Kota back. Not intentionally. Probably. Ren, Shinso, Iida, and Yaoyorozu were assigned to map the lodge-adjacent service path under Kurose and Mandalay. The task: identify how a tired group should move from dining hall to medical room during a storm without sending someone alone or blocking staff access. It was deliberately boring. Boring mattered.
The path ran along the side of the lodge, past stacked supplies, a small storage shed, and a slope leading toward a rocky side trail. The forest pressed close here but did not swallow the path. It smelled of moss and wet stone. Kota sat on a low wall near the storage shed, hat pulled low, kicking one heel against the wood. Mandalay saw him.
"Kota" He did not look at her.
"I'm not in training""No. But this is a marked path""I'm not blocking it" He was not. Technically. Iida opened his mouth. Ren said quietly "Do not route-correct a child unless necessary" Iida stopped. Then nodded.
"Correct" Kota's eyes snapped toward Ren.
"What did you say?" Ren looked at him.
"I said you are not blocking the path" Kota scowled.
"You said child""Yes""I'm not little""I did not say little" Shinso looked away. Yaoyorozu suddenly found the route diagram fascinating. Mandalay sighed softly. Kota hopped down from the wall.
"You all talk weird" Ren nodded.
"Yes" That seemed to irritate him more than disagreement would have. Good? Maybe not. Kota looked at the tags clipped to their folders.
"Are you even training? You're just walking" The words hit. Not hard. Precisely. Ren felt the bruise. No heat. Yellow. Shinso's eyes sharpened. Iida looked offended on behalf of structure. Yaoyorozu's hand tightened around her clipboard. Mandalay began "Kota" Ren lifted a hand. Not to silence her. To ask. She allowed it. Ren answered Kota.
"Yes. This is training" Kota crossed his arms.
"Walking?"
"Mapping a path tired or injured students might need later""That sounds boring""It is" Kota stared. Ren continued "Boring things still matter if people have to use them when scared" The boy's face changed. Only a fraction. Then hardened.
"Heroes always say stuff like that" Ren felt the pressure. Water. A small shoe near wet stone. Adults smiling in a photograph? A boy alone. No heat. But grief-shaped air. Not his door. Not his wound. Ren said "Maybe. That does not make you obligated to like it" Mandalay looked at him. Kota's scowl faltered.
"What?"
"You can think it sounds fake""I do""Then think that" Shinso looked at Ren with open surprise. Kota seemed suspicious.
"You don't care?"
"I care about the path. I do not need you to agree with me for the path to exist" The silence after that was strange. Mandalay's eyes softened. Kota looked away first.
"Whatever" He walked toward the lodge. Not running. Not staying. Mandalay watched him go. Ren reported quietly.
"Yellow. Kota grief association. No heat. No image stable. Boundary maintained. No follow-up" Kurose wrote. Mandalay turned to Ren.
"Thank you for not pressing" Ren looked at the path.
"It was not mine" Her expression changed.
"Yes" Yaoyorozu said softly "Not every visible wound is an assigned rescue" Ren looked at her.
"Good sentence" She blinked. Then smiled slightly.
"I learned from this environment" Aizawa was not present, but Ren felt him spiritually objecting to more curriculum language. They finished the service path drill. Hazard: stacked supplies narrowing path. Call: keep right side clear for medical access. Support: staff storage relocation. Hazard: low step after corner. Call: light marker before dusk. Support: Yaoyorozu marker creation if emergency. Hazard: child near marked path. Call: do not escalate unless path blocked or safety risk.
Support: guardian/staff, not student correction. Iida looked at the last line.
"That is for me" Ren said "Partly" Iida nodded with solemn dignity.
"Useful" Shinso muttered "Everything is useful and I hate it" By evening, the Hero Course students had endured another round of Quirk-specific drills. Midoriya's controlled output was improving in increments small enough to frustrate him and large enough to matter. Todoroki could warm a marked area without creating steam hazard on the third attempt. Yaoyorozu created fewer items and used them better. Uraraka reported nausea before stumbling. Iida slowed before dangerous turns.
Bakugo successfully redirected three earth constructs away from a civilian path and then yelled at the path for existing. Progress everywhere. Ugly. Real. After dinner, the camp gathered for a short debrief in the main hall. Mandalay spoke.
"Day one full training complete. Some of you entered the forest. Some observed from safe zones. Some mapped service routes. Some handled support drills. All of those roles are part of camp" Kaminari looked as if he had questions but not enough energy to ask them. Pixie-Bob grinned.
"Tomorrow gets harder" Groans rose. Aizawa said "Sleep" The groans died. Kurose added for the conditional group "Charts before bed. No late tactical review. No hallway wandering. No visiting other rooms. No proving today counted by doing extra" Ren felt that one.
"Status" Shinso whispered"Yellow. Extra-proof urge low-moderate. No heat""Action?"
"Chart. Sleep""Good enough" The final chart entry took longer than usual because the day had contained more than he wanted to admit and less than part of him wanted to have done. Morning deck: completed. Forest visual trigger mild heat. Reported. Resolved. Safe-zone mapping useful. Disappointment present. Standard route comparison urge present. Not acted on. Kota association low-moderate. No heat. Boundary maintained. Service path drill completed. No Scar Tissue activation. No unreported heat. Role held. He paused.
Then added: Safe zone was not empty. It was quieter work. That line felt right. Not triumphant. Right. Shinso completed his chart beside him. False voices drill. Requested confirmation. No Quirk use. Service route drill. Did not insult child. Barely. Peer awareness block stable. Social debt from good food moderate. Safe zone still irritating. Not useless. Ren read the last line.
"Good" Shinso rolled onto his back.
"I am too tired to reject the word""That is trustworthy data""Do not" Lights-out came. The lodge settled. Outside, the forest moved in night language. Branches whispered. Leaves shifted. Somewhere distant, an animal called. Ren listened. No heat. No smoke. No hand. The safe zone had counted. The road had counted. The deck had counted. The service path had counted. Kota's wound had remained Kota's. That mattered too. Ren placed the family card under his pillow again. Route can hold one step at a time.
Today, the step had not gone deep into the forest. It had still moved. He closed his eyes. Somewhere beyond the camp's protected perimeter, nothing happened yet. That was not safety. It was timing. Ren did not know that. Not tonight. Tonight, he knew only the safe zone had not been empty. And for the first full day of camp, that was enough to let sleep find him before fear did.
