Chương 135: The Wrong Kind of Better

Ren woke up better. That was the problem. Not healed. Not fine. Not even close to safe by any definition Recovery Girl would allow to live unsupervised. But better. His fever had dropped during the night. The right rib pain that should have been sharp after the previous day's rescue-entry module had settled into a deep ache instead of a stabbing line. His left wrist still hurt when he moved it, but the pain did not flare as far up the forearm.
His right shoulder held together with less shaking when he shifted against the pillow. Better. Wrongly better. His body knew it before the room told him. The room was quiet in the early morning. R-2's lights had been lowered to a soft band along the wall. The signs were still there, slightly crooked now because Hana had adjusted one corner the night before and then refused to fix the imperfection. THE GRAFTS FOLLOW RULESI CHOOSE MEANING ROOM STILL ON PROBATION WATCHING IS NOT WAITING But watching still needs lunch.
The terrible cat in the corner of the newest sign stared at him with the confidence of a creature that had never had to justify its anatomy to medical staff. Ren stared back.
"Traitor" The cat did not answer. That was wise. Hana was asleep in the chair beside the bed, one hand near the blanket, not touching. Daichi slept in the second chair, neck tilted at an angle that promised regret, Bentaro propped carefully beside him like an old guard with questionable authority. Recovery Girl was not in the room, which meant she was either nearby, watching a monitor, or manifesting through spite if needed. Ren closed his eyes and mapped. R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. signs. left wrist. right shoulder.
ribs. back. throat. hunger. less fever. less pain. Less pain. He waited for the gate. Nothing opened. No wrong silence. No missing limb. No distant right side. No soft stolen relief spreading where it should not. Just less pain. Repair Scaffold had worked overnight. Graft Lattice had let it. Scar Tissue had made rules, and the rules had allowed repair. Ren hated that the hate arrived after relief. He hated that relief arrived first. His left hand moved under the blanket.
The wrist gate flickered faintly at the edge of motion. He felt it.
"Stop" The line narrowed. Pain stayed. Less pain. Still stayed. His throat tightened. The door opened before the feeling could turn into panic. Recovery Girl entered with a tray, a tablet, and the expression of someone already prepared to be angry at good news. She looked at him once.
"You woke up better" Ren stared.
"Accusatory tone""Correct""I did not do it on purpose""Your body has a long history of causing paperwork without permission""Then arrest my body""I am considering it" Hana stirred in the chair.
"Ren?"
"Here" She sat up too quickly, then winced because sleeping in chairs had consequences even for people without Graft Lattice. Daichi woke when Bentaro shifted and almost fell. He caught the umbrella before it hit the floor.
"Here" he said automatically Recovery Girl looked at him.
"The umbrella did not need attendance" Daichi blinked.
"Reflex""Family disease" Hana leaned forward, eyes already on Ren's face.
"Warm or cold?" Ren swallowed.
"Warm. Less fever" Her expression changed. Hope tried to rise in her face and she caught it by the throat before it could become pressure. Recovery Girl saw. Approved, apparently, because she did not attack.
"Map" she said Ren closed his eyes.
"R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. less fever. less pain. hungry. suspicious""Pain absence?"
"No""Gate?"
"Quiet unless movement""Body map?"
"Present" Recovery Girl checked the tablet. Her mouth tightened. Dr. Seno appeared in the doorway a second later, which meant the numbers had committed enough optimism to require witnesses. She held her own tablet against her chest.
"Good morning" Recovery Girl looked at her.
"Say the data without smiling" Dr. Seno's mouth closed. Then opened again with admirable neutrality.
"Overnight inflammatory markers decreased more than projected. Localized tissue stress around the right intercostal region and shoulder has reduced. The wrist shows less edema. Baseline temperature is down. Graft Lattice activity was present in controlled low cycles during sleep, mostly repair scaffold support, without pain-map disruption" Silence followed. Ren stared at the ceiling. Hana's hand rose to her mouth. Daichi lowered Bentaro slowly. Recovery Girl said "Translation" Dr. Seno looked at Ren.
"You recovered faster than expected from yesterday's controlled strain" The words entered the room. Better. Officially. Ren's stomach twisted. Recovery Girl moved immediately.
"No heroic interpretation""I did not say anything""Your silence was becoming stupid" Ren closed his eyes.
"It worked" No one denied it. That was worse. Hana's voice shook.
"Yes""It helped""Yes" His left hand clenched. The wrist gate flickered.
"Stop" The line narrowed. Pain stayed. He opened his eyes.
"I hate that" Hana stood and came closer after he nodded.
"I know""I hate that my first feeling was relief" Her face broke. Then steadied.
"Good" Ren looked at her.
"Good?"
"I want you to feel relief when you hurt less""It came from—""No" Her voice cut harder than he expected. Recovery Girl did not interrupt. Hana leaned closer.
"It came through what he forced into you. That is not the same as coming from him first" Ren's throat closed. Hana's eyes were bright and furious.
"He does not get first claim on less pain" Daichi stood slowly.
"Warm is your mother's hand before it is his data" Ren turned toward him. Daichi continued "Grip is my hand under yours before it is his note. Repair is your body wanting morning before it is his experiment" Recovery Girl looked away with suspicious focus. Dr. Seno blinked too fast. Ren whispered "It still works because of what he did" Hana touched his hair.
"Yes""I hate that""Yes""I am also glad""Yes""That feels wrong" Hana shook her head.
"No. That feels human" Daichi added "Both means he did not get all of it" Ren closed his eyes. Both. Always both. Recovery Girl placed the tray on the side table.
"Eat" Ren opened one eye.
"Emotional transition?"
"Food is emotional transition" The tray held soft rice, broth, protein drink, and two small pieces of banana. Ren stared.
"The banana remains segmented""Correct""Fruit policy is oppressive""Fruit policy kept you from aspirating while arguing yesterday""I was not arguing with banana""You argue with atmosphere" Daichi lifted a hand.
"Bentaro supports fruit appeal" Recovery Girl turned slowly.
"Bentaro is under final warning" Daichi lowered his hand.
"Appeal withdrawn" Ren ate. The food helped too. That was also annoying. By midmorning, better had become a file. Kurose arrived with Aizawa and no visible documents, which meant the documents were either hidden or had already been judged too dangerous for the room. Ren was sitting at fourteen degrees. Fourteen. The number felt obscene. Recovery Girl had allowed it because his breathing was cleaner and his ribs tolerated the angle.
She had also called it temporary vertical misconduct and threatened to revoke civilization if he became proud. Ren was trying not to become proud. Pride was not the problem. Possibility was. Kurose looked at the monitor, then at his face.
"You look worse than your numbers" Ren exhaled.
"Thank you" A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. Aizawa said "Trustworthy compliment" Kurose sat near the desk.
"Dr. Seno briefed us" Ren looked at her.
"Better""Yes""Wrong kind""Yes" The answer came without hesitation. Good. Kurose continued "Better can still feel wrong" Ren looked down at his wrist.
"Does that go in document?"
"No. That goes in the room first" Aizawa stepped closer.
"Training adjustment" Recovery Girl narrowed her eyes.
"Careful" Aizawa ignored the threat only because he respected it.
"Observation module remains. No increased field activity today" Ren looked up.
"I am better" Aizawa's eyes sharpened.
"That is not an argument for more" Ren hated that he had made the argument. He hated more that Aizawa saw it. Aizawa continued "Better after activity is when overuse gets tempting. Your first lesson today is that improved recovery does not buy extra recklessness" Ren closed his eyes.
"Medical capitalism denied" Recovery Girl looked vaguely pleased.
"Good phrase" Kurose wrote it down. Ren opened his eyes.
"No""Too late" Aizawa said "Second lesson. Better numbers do not erase stop conditions""I know""Say it""Better numbers do not erase stop conditions""Third lesson. Faster recovery is not proof that Garaki helped you become a hero" Ren's throat tightened. The room went still. Aizawa's voice stayed flat.
"Say it if you can" Ren looked at him. The sentence was hard because part of him did not believe it yet. That was why Aizawa had asked. Ren breathed.
"Faster recovery is not proof that Garaki helped me become a hero" The words scratched all the way out. Hana closed her eyes. Daichi's hand found the back of her chair. Recovery Girl nodded once.
"Again later. Not now" Kurose looked at him.
"The language will take repetitions" Ren stared at the blanket.
"I hate repetitions""Then this is tragic" He almost smiled. Fourteen degrees allowed very small humor. The observation feed began at 11: 00. Class 1-A was running a body-map integration module. That title had caused several students visible suffering before the exercise even began. Ren sat in R-2 with a small screen and an audio channel open only when staff allowed. Shinso sat in Observation Room 2 with Kurose. Aizawa was in the gym with Class 1-A.
Toshinori listened through a secured line from medical, silent unless invited. Recovery Girl monitored Ren and, by sheer reputation, everyone else. The module was simple. Run a low-output rescue circuit. Stop. Report body map. Report temptation. No one enjoyed the last part. That meant it was working. Midoriya went first because Aizawa believed in placing the hardest part where avoidance could not grow roots.
He moved through a low rubble path, lifted one padded barrier at five percent One For All, checked a dummy's leg marker, then returned to the start line. No dramatic speed. No broken bones. No desperate improvisation. He stopped at the line. Aizawa said "Map" Midoriya inhaled.
"Right arm mild strain. left shoulder fine. knees fine. breathing elevated. no numbness. One For All at five percent. Fingers tingling slightly but not pain" Aizawa said "Temptation" Midoriya's face reddened.
"I wanted to say fingers fine because tingling is normal after output" Aizawa looked toward the observation camera.
"Observer" Ren looked at Recovery Girl. She checked his monitor.
"Short" Ren activated audio.
"Tingling is not fine because it is familiar" Midoriya looked toward the camera. The sentence hit him visibly. Ren continued "Familiar damage is still data" Midoriya swallowed.
"Yes" Aizawa looked at him.
"Repeat" Midoriya's voice shook slightly.
"Familiar damage is still data" Toshinori's breathing shifted through Ren's side audio. Ren heard it. He did not comment. Not at the cost of his own map. Bakugo went second. He hated the body-map report so much the entire gym could feel it. His circuit was clean. Annoyingly clean. Controlled blasts. clear route. no unnecessary damage. He rescued the dummy with one rough but functional handoff and returned to the line with smoke curling from his palms. Aizawa said "Map" Bakugo snarled "Hands hot. forearms fine.
shoulders fine. breath fine. ears fine. no numbness""Temptation""None" Aizawa stared. Bakugo glared back.
"None" Aizawa said nothing. The silence became educational. Bakugo's jaw worked. Then he spat "Wanted to say the first blast was perfect because I corrected the angle before anyone noticed" Aizawa nodded.
"Better" Kirishima whispered "That was good" Bakugo snapped "I will kill you" Aizawa said "Temptation to make correction invisible noted" Bakugo's eyes flashed. Ren watched from R-2. Correction invisible. Good phrase. Dangerous phrase. Bakugo wanted mistakes erased by being fast enough to fix them before anyone else saw. Ren understood more than he wanted to. Todoroki went third. His circuit involved making a short ice bridge over a marked hazard and maintaining safe temperature for the dummy.
He performed it with precision, announced cold zone, regulated with heat, and returned. Aizawa said "Map" Todoroki answered "Right side temperature elevated. left hand cold but functional. breathing normal. no numbness. jaw tension" The class looked at him. Todoroki blinked.
"Was jaw tension not required?" Aizawa said "It is data" Todoroki nodded.
"Then jaw tension""Temptation" Todoroki looked toward the ice bridge.
"I wanted to make the bridge larger before anyone asked because larger felt safer" Aizawa said "And?"
"Larger would have spread cold""Good" Todoroki looked at the floor.
"I know" Ren looked away from the screen. Not his door. But the pattern was allowed. Larger felt safer. Environment obeying before people asked. Useful. Dangerous. Shinso's voice came through a side channel from Observation Room 2.
"Do not make the weather solve the feeling" The gym went quiet. Todoroki looked toward the camera. Then nodded slowly.
"That is useful" Shinso muttered "Dangerous word" Todoroki said "That is a useful warning" Shinso accepted that with visible reluctance. Uraraka's turn came after. She completed the circuit well, then reported nausea before anyone asked. Asui nodded in approval like a small amphibious judge. Kaminari reported hand hesitation around metal hazards and looked embarrassed until Jiro said "Good. You noticed before touching" which made him look even more embarrassed but less unsafe.
The class was becoming better at saying ugly data aloud. That was good. That was exhausting. By the end of the module, Ren had made three short observations and stopped himself from making nine more. His throat hurt from not speaking. His wrist hurt from holding the blanket. His ribs hurt less than they should have. Wrongly better. Again. Recovery Girl noticed when the feed ended.
"Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"R-2. chair. screen dark. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. less pain than expected. tired. frustrated. wanted to talk too much""Pain absence?"
"No""Gate?"
"Quiet""Repair warmth?"
"Ribs low""Good" Ren opened his eyes.
"I am recovering during observation""Yes""That is not fair" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"To whom?" The question was too sharp. Ren looked down.
"I do not know" Hana answered softly.
"To the version of you who survived without it" Ren closed his eyes. There. Yes. The boy who held doors without Pain Modulation. The boy who stayed in camp while fear tried to make his body open the wrong route. The boy who collapsed after Sports Festival because Scar Tissue had no help and no rules for grafts that did not exist yet. The boy who had to earn every second of function with pain and afterward. Now his body recovered faster. What did that say about the boy before?
Daichi spoke before the thought could become cruel.
"It says he needed help he was not given" Ren opened his eyes. Daichi's voice was steady.
"It does not say he was lesser" Hana added "It says your body should not have had to work alone" Ren looked at Recovery Girl. She nodded.
"Correct" Ren swallowed.
"Help from stolen things" Kurose's voice came from the side speaker.
"Help through stolen things" Ren turned his head. She had remained on the channel from Observation Room 2.
"Important difference" she said Ren breathed.
"Through""Yes""Not from first""No" The room held the correction. Ren did not believe all of it. But it stayed available. After lunch, Toshinori asked for five minutes. Recovery Girl granted three. Toshinori accepted without bargaining, which startled everyone enough that Recovery Girl checked whether he was secretly worse. His audio connected to R-2 while Ren was still sitting at fourteen degrees, which was now beginning to feel less like conquest and more like work. Toshinori's voice came through low and rough.
"I heard the body-map module" Ren looked toward the speaker.
"You were quiet""I am learning" Recovery Girl said "He is insufferable about it" Toshinori ignored her with the courage of a man already lying down.
"You told Young Midoriya familiar damage is still data""Yes""I wrote it down" Ren looked at the signs.
"Good""And Bakugo's invisible correction""Not mine""No. But important""Yes" Toshinori breathed.
"I missed many invisible corrections when teaching" Ren did not answer. Toshinori continued "Students who fix themselves before adults see the mistake are often praised as controlled" Ren looked at his wrist.
"Yes""Sometimes they are hiding""Yes" A pause. Then Toshinori said "I was one of them" The room went silent. Ren looked at the speaker. Toshinori's voice remained steady.
"I thought if no one saw how much I adjusted, it meant I had made the adjustment correctly. Later, as All Might, I turned that into an art. Smile before anyone sees the blood. Stand before anyone sees the knee. Win before anyone sees what it cost" Recovery Girl said nothing. That was how Ren knew the words hurt her too. Toshinori continued "Young Bakugo sees correction as victory if no one sees the error. Young Midoriya sees pain as proof if no one calls it failure.
Todoroki changes the environment before people can ask what they need. All of them are learning from a world that rewards invisible harm" Ren's throat tightened.
"You are part of that world""Yes" No hesitation. The yes mattered. Toshinori said "So are you" Ren flinched. Recovery Girl's monitor beeped. Toshinori's voice stayed soft.
"You are not guilty for it. But when you stop before collapse and everyone watches, you are teaching too" Ren closed his eyes.
"No""Yes""I do not want to become lesson""Neither did I""That did not stop you""No" The honesty was too much and exactly enough. Ren opened his eyes.
"Then do not make me one" Toshinori's breath shifted.
"I will try not to""Try harder" A pause. Then a weak laugh.
"Good" Recovery Girl snapped "Do not encourage patient aggression" Toshinori said "I think that was student feedback" Ren looked at the speaker.
"Student condition. If my stopping becomes class lesson, it must not become class expectation" Aizawa's voice came from the doorway.
"Accepted" Ren turned. Aizawa stood there, arms crossed. Had he been there the whole time? Probably. Annoying. Kurose appeared beside him a second later.
"Write it" She did. If Ren's stop behavior is used as instructional example, staff must prevent it from becoming expectation for performance or emotional labor. Toshinori said "Good condition" Ren leaned back.
"Conditions multiplying" Kurose said "Healthy ecosystem" Recovery Girl said "Infestation" Ren almost smiled. Better. Wrongly. Still. That evening, the wrong kind of better became visible to Class 1-A by accident. Ren had been moved from R-2 to a short supervised corridor mobility drill. No class involvement. No module. No observers except medical staff, Aizawa, Kurose, and his parents. At least, that had been the plan. Plans had poor survival rates at U. A.
The corridor connected the medical wing to a small internal courtyard. Ren's task was to stand from the chair with harness support, walk four steps along the rail, stop, map, sit. Not heroic. Barely cinematic. Recovery Girl had threatened to cancel if anyone called it a milestone. Ren stood. The first step was ugly. The second was better. The third was too good. Graft Lattice threaded through his soles, ankles, knees, right hip, ribs, and shoulder in pale lines that faded in and out beneath skin and bandage.
Scar Tissue distributed the load. Repair Scaffold warmed the stressed muscles without flooding. Pain Modulation narrowed around the wrist where the rail strained it, reducing sharpness but leaving presence. His body moved. Not smoothly. But more than before. Four steps came. Then the fifth began because the body had momentum and the relief was useful and the courtyard looked close enough to become symbolic if he let it. Ren stopped. Not because anyone said it.
Because the fifth step wanted to exist for the wrong reason.
"Stop" The harness held. Aizawa stepped close but did not touch. Recovery Girl checked the monitor. Hana's hands covered her mouth. Daichi stood frozen with Bentaro held like a prayer disguised as household object. Ren breathed hard.
"Map" Recovery Girl said "You first""Corridor. rail. left wrist. soles. knees. right ribs. shoulder. fifth step wanted proof. stopped" Aizawa's eyes sharpened.
"Good" Then the side door opened. Class 1-A had been coming back from supplementary review. Of course they had. Kaminari was first through the door. He froze. Sero ran into him. Mina ran into Sero. Jiro stopped just in time and looked furious at physics. Bakugo looked over their heads and went still. Midoriya's eyes widened. Todoroki's gaze moved to the rail, the harness, the pale lines fading under Ren's skin, then to Ren's face. Iida lifted both hands as if ready to organize traffic and then visibly chose not to.
Good. Training. The corridor became a test no one had planned. Recovery Girl's voice could have cut glass.
"No commentary" Every student shut their mouth. Even Kaminari. Ren stood at the rail, breathing hard, sweat cold on his neck. The class had seen the fifth step not happen. Or maybe they had only seen him standing. That was worse. Standing looked like better. Better invited hope. Hope invited pressure. Mina's eyes filled. She did not speak. Midoriya's hand twitched toward his notebook. He stopped. Bakugo stared at Ren's feet. Then at the rail. Then at Ren's face. Ren said "Not module" His voice was rough.
Aizawa looked at the class.
"You heard him" Iida said carefully "Not module" Asui nodded.
"Not observation" Todoroki said "No role assigned" Jiro added "No commentary" Kaminari whispered "No encouragement" Recovery Girl looked almost satisfied. Almost. Bakugo shoved his hands into his pockets.
"You stopped" Ren looked at him.
"Yes" Bakugo's jaw worked. Then he said "Fifth step looked stupid anyway" Kirishima went pale. Mina inhaled. Aizawa's scarf shifted. Ren stared. Then understood. Not encouragement. Not praise. Not disappointment. Bad delivery. useful content. The fifth step had looked stupid because it had wanted proof. Ren breathed.
"Yes" Bakugo looked away.
"Tch" Recovery Girl pointed at the class.
"Leave before I turn this into paperwork" They left. Mostly. Midoriya stayed half a second longer. Not moving. Not speaking. Just looking at Ren's left hand on the rail. Then he said "Familiar damage is still data" Ren nodded once.
"Fine and not broken are different" Midoriya's eyes widened. Bakugo yelled from down the hall "Stop stealing my line, Deku!" Midoriya flinched. Then smiled weakly.
"I think it is communal now" Bakugo's response was not medically approved. The class left fully after that. Ren sat down. The chair felt less like defeat this time. More like return. Still hard. But return. Recovery Girl checked his numbers.
"High but not stupid" Ren leaned back.
"Fifth step bad" Aizawa nodded.
"You noticed""Barely""Barely counts if you stop" Hana knelt beside the chair after Ren nodded.
"You walked" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes""You stopped""Yes" Her hand touched his hair.
"That second part is better" His eyes burned.
"The first part felt good""I know""I hate that""I know""I also liked it""I know" He opened his eyes.
"How do you know all answers?" Hana smiled through tears.
"I am your mother. Also you are repetitive" Daichi came closer.
"Four steps" Ren looked at him.
"Four" Daichi's voice was thick.
"Not five""No""Good" Ren stared at the corridor. The courtyard remained ahead. Unreached. Still there. That mattered too. Better did not mean take the fifth step. Better meant the fourth could be enough today. That night, Ren added a condition to his list. Kurose wrote it because his wrist hurt. Improvement cannot be used as automatic permission for escalation. Aizawa read it.
"Accepted" Recovery Girl said "Already medical law" Kurose typed anyway. Hana added another underneath. Better is allowed to be good and wrong at the same time. Ren stared.
"That is not condition" Hana said "It is for the room" Daichi added "Room condition" Recovery Girl looked at the wall.
"If this becomes another sign, I am leaving" The next morning, it was a sign. BETTER IS ALLOWED TO BE GOOD AND WRONG AT THE SAME TIME The terrible cat sat beside it, now with a smaller terrible bowl of soup. Recovery Girl did not leave. She did complain. Ren looked at the sign from fourteen degrees and breathed. The pain was less than it had been. The wrongness remained. The relief remained too. Both. Always both. Garaki had not made him a hero. Graft Lattice helped anyway. His body recovered faster than before.
The boy who survived without it had not been lesser. The boy who had it now was not stolen entirely. Better did not erase the wound. Better did not belong to the monster. Better was allowed to be good and wrong at the same time. Ren whispered the sentence once. Then again. On the second repetition, the wrist gate flickered softly, stayed narrow, and let the pain remain. Present. Less. His.
