The first day of Provisional Track began with a room that had too many screens and not enough doors. Shinso disliked it immediately. That was not unusual. Shinso disliked many rooms. He disliked rooms where people sat across from him as if he were being judged. He disliked rooms with one exit. He disliked rooms that smelled like new plastic, old coffee, and institutional optimism.
He especially disliked rooms that tried to look neutral, because neutral rooms were almost always where adults placed feelings they did not want to admit belonged to them. Observation Room 2 was trying very hard to look neutral. It failed. There were three wall displays, a whiteboard, two visible exits, four chairs, one emergency stop panel, and a small table with water, approved snacks, and a printed sign that said FOOD IS NOT A COMMITMENT TO CONTINUE. Shinso stared at the sign.
"Akiyama infection" Kurose, standing near the whiteboard, did not look up from her notes.
"Preventative care" Aizawa leaned against the wall by the main display, scarf loose, eyes tired in the permanent way.
"Sit" Shinso sat in the chair closest to both exits and furthest from the center of the room. Aizawa looked at the choice.
"Predictable""Trustworthy""Do not steal Ren's vocabulary before nine""It is communal now" Kurose finally looked up.
"Unfortunately true" The center screen activated. Ren appeared from R-2, seated in his medical chair at an angle Recovery Girl had called a temporary concession to spinal politics. The frame showed his face, shoulders, blanket, left wrist bandage, and the upper edge of the sign behind him. THE GRAFTS FOLLOW RULESI CHOOSE MEANING A terrible little cat sat in the bottom corner of the sign, drawn with enough confidence to suggest it knew it was ugly and intended to remain so. Shinso stared at it.
"The cat is worse now" Ren looked over his shoulder.
"It has emotional jurisdiction""No""Hana says yes""That is how institutions fall" Recovery Girl's voice came from off-screen.
"I am one comment away from banning both of you from mammals" Ren looked back at the camera.
"Good morning" Shinso nodded.
"Medically vertical""Conditionally" Aizawa pointed at the whiteboard.
"Focus" On the board, he had written the day's module title. OBSERVATION MODULE 1WATCHING IS NOT WAITING Under it: StopReturnConsentRoleMap Ren read it through the screen.
"Map got promoted" Aizawa said "It was already implied""Dangerous assumption""Correct. So now it is written" Shinso leaned back.
"This school is becoming signs" Kurose said "The signs are because students keep trying to become metaphors" Ren looked offended.
"I have become very few metaphors today" Recovery Girl said "It is 08: 57" Ren considered that.
"Fair" Kurose capped her pen.
"Purpose of today. You do not enter the field. You observe selected Class 1-A license-preparation scenarios from this room. You identify route issues, stop failures, consent drift, role confusion, unsafe hero habits, communication gaps, and body-map risks" Shinso stared.
"So homework weaponized against classmates" Ren said "I said that""Good phrase""Thank you" Aizawa looked between them.
"You observe. You do not solve the drill for them unless asked by staff. You do not become invisible teachers. You do not become emergency commentary. You are students learning to see" Ren nodded.
"Watching is not waiting" Aizawa pointed at him.
"Say it like you believe it""I am considering believing it""Good enough" Shinso looked at the monitors.
"Do they know we are watching?"
"Yes""Does Bakugo hate it?"
"Yes""Good" On the second screen, Gym Gamma came into view. Class 1-A stood in staggered groups across a mock urban rescue field. Low concrete walls, soft rubble, tilted platforms, weighted dummies, hazard lights, smoke markers, and several staff-controlled mechanical obstacles created a compact disaster zone. It was not a combat exam. Not yet. It was route management, rescue prioritization, communication under pressure, and staying useful without turning every movement into a heroic sprint.
The students looked more tense than the scenario deserved. That was probably because they knew they were being watched. That was also part of the scenario. Aizawa opened the audio channel to the gym.
"Class 1-A. Observation Module 1 begins in two minutes. Akiyama and Shinso are observing from a separate room. They are not judging your worth. They are learning to identify field patterns. You are learning to function while being observed without performing for the observation" Kaminari's voice came through faintly.
"That is somehow worse than judging" Jiro said "Do less" Aizawa continued "Scenario. Mixed rescue route. Three visible civilians. Two hidden hazard triggers. One blocked exit. One false safe zone. Objective is not speed. Objective is clean rescue and role discipline. Begin on signal" Bakugo's voice cut through.
"False safe zone is obvious" Aizawa said "Then you should enjoy proving that without becoming stupid" Bakugo shut up. Shinso looked at Ren through the screen.
"Educationally unpleasant" Ren nodded.
"Growing field" The buzzer sounded. Class 1-A moved. For the first twenty seconds, Ren forgot to breathe like a patient. Not because anything dramatic happened. Because the field became a map. Iida took left corridor and immediately announced route status, speed reduced, visibility clear, possible unstable wall. Good communication. Too many words. Uraraka and Asui moved toward the nearest dummy, Asui lowering herself to eye level before touching it. Good.
Kaminari followed Sero toward a fallen beam and asked once whether the beam was electrically marked before touching it. Good. Jiro paused and used her jacks against the floor to listen for hidden mechanisms. Excellent. Yaoyorozu watched the whole field before creating anything. Good. Midoriya moved toward the child-sized dummy before his team assignment finished. Ren's left hand tightened around the blanket. The wrist gate flickered. He felt it.
"Stop" The line narrowed. Pain stayed. Recovery Girl's voice came immediately from R-2.
"Map""R-2. screen. Shinso. Aizawa. Kurose. Class field. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. Midoriya moving early. okay""Good" Aizawa looked at him.
"Observation" Ren kept his eyes on the screen.
"Midoriya moved before role lock because the dummy is child-shaped" Shinso added "He did not ignore instructions. He outran them emotionally" Kurose wrote. Aizawa said nothing. On screen, Midoriya reached the dummy, checked breathing marker, called "Responsive civilian, possible leg injury" and then lifted the edge of rubble with controlled power. His movement was clean. Too clean for the first mistake to be obvious to anyone who loved outcomes more than routes.
Ren said "He needs route confirmation before body commitment" Aizawa nodded once.
"Noted" Bakugo entered the right corridor like an explosion trying to prove it could be a rescue strategy if properly insulted. He did not blast the first obstacle. Progress. He checked line of sight, identified a smoke marker, and shouted at Kirishima to brace the left side before he cleared debris with a controlled burst. Good. Then the second dummy began to tip from an elevated platform. Bakugo's body snapped toward it. Too fast. The explosion sparked before he had the angle. Kirishima shouted "Wall!"
Bakugo cut the blast to half-power and redirected, catching the platform edge with recoil instead of blowing through the hazard marker. The platform shook but held. Shinso leaned forward.
"He almost made the field answer him" Ren looked at him.
"Explain""He did not know if the dummy was bait or civilian, so he tried to become loud enough that the scenario would reveal itself" Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Kurose wrote faster. Ren watched Bakugo stabilize the dummy and yell "Stop wobbling like crap" at an object that had no moral responsibility.
"Bad math with motion" Ren said Shinso nodded.
"Yes" On screen, Todoroki created an ice ramp toward the blocked exit before anyone asked for full environmental read. The ice was precise, controlled, structurally useful, and immediately began lowering the temperature around the false safe zone. Jiro looked toward it.
"Cold zone spreading" Todoroki stopped. Good. But the ice was already there. Ren breathed.
"Todoroki solves with environment control before checking human tolerance" Kurose glanced at him.
"Safe door?"
"Safe enough" Aizawa said "Continue" Ren watched Todoroki shift, melting part of the ramp with left-side heat to reduce cold spread. He corrected quickly. That mattered.
"He corrected. But the first instinct is make environment obey" Shinso looked at the screen.
"Sounds familiar" Ren did not answer. Not his door. Not now. In the center, Uraraka touched the dummy and made it weightless, then started moving it with Asui. Good. Then she kept one hand on it and looked toward the next civilian instead of checking whether the dummy had shifted in a way that would make a real injured person dizzy. Asui noticed.
"Uraraka, head support" Uraraka corrected immediately. Ren nodded.
"Asui is keeping personhood on the dummy" Kurose looked at him.
"Personhood?" If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"Uraraka made weight easier. Asui kept body real" Shinso said "Good phrase" Ren said "Keep it" Kurose wrote. Kaminari reached the beam with Sero. This time he did not ask before touching the metal support. He had asked once earlier. Time pressure had eaten the habit. The hazard light flashed yellow. Jiro shouted "Kaminari!" He yanked his hand back.
"Sorry!" Aizawa looked toward Shinso. Shinso said "First ask survived calm. Did not survive hurry" Kurose wrote. Aizawa nodded.
"Good" The first hidden trigger activated. A low siren sounded. The false safe zone lit green. Mina shouted "Safe zone!" Yaoyorozu frowned.
"Too clean!" Good. Very good. Iida, already moving toward it, skidded to a stop.
"Hold position! Verify!" Bakugo yelled "It is fake, dumbasses!" Aizawa muttered "Bad delivery, correct content" Ren watched Yaoyorozu create two small marker flags and throw one toward the green zone. The floor panel shifted. A foam block dropped from above, harmless but heavy enough to fail a rescue route if someone had carried a civilian there. Class 1-A reacted well. Too well in places. Several students surged toward the false safe zone after it triggered, eager to fix the failure before it became a score loss.
Movement bunched. Roles blurred. Kirishima left Bakugo's left side to help Mina. Bakugo lost his brace and compensated with a blast too close to the unstable wall. Todoroki shifted to reinforce the wall with ice. Midoriya looked up from his rescue and almost moved to help the wall too, despite already holding rubble off a dummy. Ren's heart rate rose.
"Role drift" Aizawa said "Who?"
"All of them" Shinso added "One triggered failure and they all tried to become the person fixing it" Kurose wrote. Ren's voice sharpened despite fatigue.
"Midoriya cannot leave the leg-injury dummy. Kirishima cannot leave Bakugo's brace without handoff. Todoroki can reinforce but must announce temperature risk. Mina needs to stop apologizing and call position. Iida needs fewer words but correct authority. Yaoyorozu should assign verification team before moving flags" Aizawa looked at him. Ren stopped. The wrist gate flickered. He breathed.
"Too much?" Recovery Girl's voice came through his side audio.
"Map""R-2. screen. field. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. talking fast. okay""Slow" Ren nodded. Kurose looked at him.
"You are not in the field""I know""Say it""I am not in the field""Again""I am not in the field" Aizawa watched him.
"Good. Observation is not command unless staff requests command" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" Shinso looked at him.
"You went route voice" Ren looked back.
"Yes""Understandable""Dangerous""Both" Kurose underlined something. Aizawa opened the gym channel.
"Pause" The field froze. Some students froze better than others. Bakugo stopped with one hand still raised and sparks hissing between his fingers. Midoriya held the rubble and looked like being paused physically hurt. Aizawa's voice filled the gym.
"Status checks. No movement" Class 1-A began reporting. Iida first, naturally.
"Left corridor stable, one civilian partially cleared, false safe zone confirmed unsafe, roles disrupted after trigger" Aizawa said "Shorter next time. Good content" Iida looked wounded and pleased at once. Uraraka said "Civilian weightless, head supported after correction, no movement" Asui said "Support stable" Kaminari said "Almost touched hazard without asking. Hand back. No injury" Jiro said "Hazard tone still active under beam" Bakugo growled "Right platform stable.
Wall not blown" Aizawa said "High standards" Bakugo snarled "It is not blown!" Ren almost smiled. Aizawa looked at the observation room screen.
"Observers. One point each. Human language. No essay" Ren and Shinso stared at him. Shinso said "You gave us homework and banned essays" Aizawa said "Yes" Shinso leaned toward his microphone.
"Role drift after false safe zone. Most of you tried to repair the same failure. That makes one failure contagious" The gym was silent. Then Yaoyorozu nodded.
"That is accurate" Ren spoke next.
"Midoriya, your rescue was clean after contact, but you moved before role confirmation because the dummy was child-shaped. Body commitment before route confirmation" Midoriya flinched. Then nodded.
"Yes" Aizawa said "Body map" Midoriya blinked.
"Now?"
"Yes" Midoriya swallowed.
"Right arm moderate strain. left hand stable. knees fine. breathing elevated. One For All at low percentage. No numbness" Ren looked down. Good. Aizawa said "Good. Continue holding only if map remains" Midoriya's eyes widened.
"Yes, sir" Bakugo looked at Midoriya, then at the rubble, then away. Aizawa cut the channel. Ren leaned back. His breath was harder than he wanted. Recovery Girl said "Drink" Ren reached for the straw. Wrist pain. Gate flicker.
"Stop" Narrow. Pain stayed. He drank. Shinso looked at him.
"You stopped while drinking?"
"Yes""Heroic hydration" Ren lowered the straw.
"Do not start""I already did" The field resumed. This time Class 1-A moved differently. Not perfectly. Better. Midoriya waited for Iida to confirm route before shifting the rubble angle. The delay cost two seconds and saved the team from bunched movement when a second hazard marker flashed. Bakugo shouted less at the dummy and more at Kirishima, which was not ideal but did include "brace right" before movement.
Todoroki announced "cold zone expanding" before forming the next ice support, then added heat to regulate the path. Uraraka asked Asui "head okay?" before moving the weightless dummy through the corridor. Kaminari asked before touching the second beam even though his voice cracked with the effort not to rush. Good. Messy. Human. Mina, who had nearly apologized six times, caught herself during the second route shift and instead shouted "Position left, smoke marker, need eyes!" Jiro answered.
"On it!" Sero anchored tape across the safe corridor and called "This is a guide, not a wall!" Aizawa looked mildly less disappointed. Kurose noticed.
"You look almost pleased""No""Trustworthy denial" The second hidden hazard triggered from the ceiling. Foam debris dropped toward the central corridor where Yaoyorozu and Sato were moving a dummy. Todoroki's ice could block it, but the angle would freeze the corridor. Bakugo could blast it, but the blast could throw debris toward the civilians. Midoriya could move, but he was still committed to the first dummy. For half a second, Class 1-A hesitated. That half second mattered.
Then Iida shouted "Sato, shield position! Yaoyorozu, low barrier! Todoroki, no full freeze! Bakugo, upward angle only!" Bakugo snarled "Do not order me!" He used the upward angle anyway. Yaoyorozu created a low flexible barrier. Sato braced it. Todoroki made a small ice ridge, not a wall. Foam hit, split, and scattered away from the dummies. Clean. Not perfect. Clean enough. Ren breathed out. Shinso leaned back.
"Annoyingly competent" Ren nodded.
"Class on probation but improving" Aizawa opened the channel.
"Scenario complete. Debrief positions. No collapsing artistically" Kaminari dropped to a crouch.
"Is this artistic?"
"No" Kaminari gave a thumbs-up. Bakugo stayed standing just to prove he could. Midoriya lowered the rubble and immediately looked at his hands. Ren noticed. Aizawa noticed Ren noticing. Good. The debrief moved to the classroom after water, short rest, and no one being allowed to pretend they were not tired. Ren stayed on screen. Shinso moved from Observation Room 2 to the back of the classroom with Kurose and Aizawa's permission. He did not sit with Class 1-A yet. Not avoidance. Structure.
The class looked different after the module. Sweaty. irritated. thoughtful. less careful in the fragile way and more careful in the useful way. Aizawa wrote three phrases on the board. ROLE DRIFTROUTE CONFIRMATIONPERSONHOOD Mina raised a hand.
"Personhood sounds like we failed morally" Aizawa said "Sometimes rescue fails morally before it fails physically" Mina lowered her hand.
"Okay, terrifying" Kurose stepped forward.
"Rescue dummies are not people. But if you practice treating them like objects, your body learns object habits under pressure" Asui nodded.
"That is why I corrected head support""Correct" Uraraka bowed slightly toward her.
"Thanks, Tsu" Asui said "Ribbit. You corrected fast" Ren spoke from the screen.
"Fast correction matters" Uraraka looked at him.
"You saw that?"
"Yes" Her face softened.
"Thank you" Ren nodded. He did not say good job. Not because it was wrong. Because he was still learning what praise cost when aimed at people under pressure. Shinso spoke from the back.
"Kaminari asked the first time, forgot under pressure, then asked again later" Kaminari straightened.
"That sounds like a sandwich of failure and growth" Shinso stared.
"I hate that and yes" Jiro snorted. Kaminari looked proud and wounded. Aizawa said "Good. That is training" Kaminari whispered "The sandwich?"
"No" Yaoyorozu looked toward Ren's screen.
"Akiyama, you said false failure became contagious. Can you explain?" Ren glanced toward Kurose. She nodded. Aizawa watched. Recovery Girl was not on classroom audio, but Ren knew she was listening from R-2 and judging his blood pressure. He slowed down.
"When the false safe zone triggered, the team treated it like the most important problem because it was loud and visible. Several roles shifted toward fixing the visible error. That left existing civilians and braces vulnerable. One failure became contagious because everyone wanted to be useful in the same place" The class absorbed that. Iida's face tightened.
"That was my responsibility as route lead" Ren shook his head slightly.
"Not only. Role drift is team pressure. Lead names it, team resists it" Iida nodded slowly.
"Lead names it. Team resists it" He wrote that down. Bakugo clicked his tongue.
"So if Half-and-Half screams cold zone, we do not all stare at the ice like idiots" Todoroki looked at him.
"I did not scream""You should" Todoroki considered.
"Perhaps I should raise volume" Kaminari whispered "Todoroki screaming cold zone sounds terrifying" Jiro said "He would say it in the same voice" Todoroki said "Cold zone" Half the class flinched because somehow the calm delivery made it worse. Bakugo scowled.
"See? Creepy" Todoroki looked mildly satisfied. Ren looked away before he smiled too hard. Ribs. Stop. Good. Midoriya raised his hand.
"Akiyama" Ren looked back. Midoriya's notebook was open but not moving. Good.
"Did I do the body map correctly?" The room went still in a small way. It was not a dramatic question. That made it more important. Ren answered carefully.
"Yes. It was specific. You included strain, stability, breathing, output, and numbness. Next add temptation" Midoriya blinked.
"Temptation?" Aizawa's eyes narrowed slightly, interested. Ren continued "What you wanted to hide or ignore" Midoriya looked down at his hands. The class did not look away this time. Not staring. Witnessing. Midoriya swallowed.
"I wanted to say my right arm was fine because it was not damaged" Aizawa said "Add that" Midoriya wrote. Wanted to call right arm fine because not damaged. His face went red. Bakugo looked at him.
"Dumbass" Midoriya flinched. Bakugo continued "Fine and not broken are different" Midoriya stared. Kirishima's eyes widened. Jiro looked at Sero. Sero mouthed did he just help? Sero mouthed back yes? Aizawa said "Correct" Bakugo looked furious that correctness had been witnessed. Ren watched Midoriya write again. Fine and not broken are different. Toshinori would need to know that line. Not now. Later. Not at the cost of Ren's own map. Shinso raised a hand from the back. Aizawa looked at him.
"Shinso""Observation. Bakugo corrected Midoriya by insulting him. Content useful. Delivery terrible. Relationship context unclear" Bakugo turned.
"What did you say, eye bags?" Shinso stared back.
"See?" The class made a collective sound. Not quite laughter. Not quite panic. Bakugo stood halfway. Aizawa's scarf twitched.
"Sit" Bakugo sat. Barely. Ren said "Delivery terrible. Content useful" Bakugo glared at the screen.
"You too?"
"Yes""Traitor" Ren said "Classmate" The word hit the room. Bakugo's glare changed. Not softer. Different. He looked away.
"Tch" Kirishima stared at the desk with a smile so large he looked physically in danger. Bakugo snapped "Do not make that face" Kirishima covered his mouth. Mina whispered "Classmate" Jiro elbowed her. Kurose looked at Aizawa. Aizawa looked like he wanted to erase the emotional progress before anyone noticed. He failed. The debrief ended with homework. Because Aizawa believed any emotionally significant moment should be followed by work before teenagers became poetry. Class 1-A had to write three lines each.
One role they drifted from. One route they failed to confirm. One moment they treated a person or dummy too much like a task. Ren and Shinso had homework too. One observation they made too fast. One moment they wanted to intervene. One condition they need before entering field modules. Shinso groaned.
"We get homework from watching homework" Aizawa said "Yes" Ren looked at the prompt through the screen. Observation made too fast. Midoriya. child-shaped dummy. He had been right, but the speed of the observation had carried field urgency. He had almost become a voice in the room instead of a student watching a room. Wanted to intervene. False safe zone. Everyone moving. His body had leaned toward the screen as if routes could be corrected by will through glass. Condition before field modules.
Return with a body map was already written. He needed more. Maybe: no live tactical command until staff asks. He hated that. So probably yes. Kurose saw his face through the screen.
"Good condition?"
"Annoying condition""Those overlap often" Aizawa looked toward him.
"Say it" Ren breathed.
"No live tactical command from me unless staff asks or emergency protocol activates" Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" Shinso looked at him.
"That one hurts""Yes""Means it is probably right""Unfortunately" Shinso looked at his own paper.
"One condition before field modules. No using Brainwashing because someone else failed communication first" Kurose's eyes sharpened.
"Excellent" Shinso grimaced.
"Stop that""No" Aizawa looked at the class.
"This is where training begins. Not when you pass. Not when you fight. Not when someone praises you. Here. In what you notice, what you correct, and what you stop before it becomes damage" The room stayed quiet. Then Kaminari raised his hand.
"Can we eat now?" Aizawa stared.
"Yes" Kaminari stood.
"Training begins with lunch" Recovery Girl's voice came through Ren's side of the connection, accidentally unmuted.
"Finally, someone understands curriculum" The class froze. Aizawa looked toward the screen. Ren closed his eyes. Shinso said "I heard nothing" Kaminari whispered "Medical wisdom" Jiro said "Do not make it weird""Too late" Aizawa dismissed them before lunch became another module. Back in R-2, the screen darkened. Ren leaned back in the chair. He was tired in a way that felt like field fatigue without the field. Recovery Girl entered the visible frame with a protein drink.
"Drink" Ren took it.
"Observation is tiring""Yes""Annoying""Most useful things are" He looked at her. She lifted one eyebrow.
"Dangerous word. Drink anyway" He drank. The left wrist gate stayed quiet. Pain present. Map present. Good. Kurose's voice came through the room speaker after the classroom emptied.
"Debrief for you later. Rest first" Ren nodded.
"Class?"
"Messy. Careful. Human" He closed his eyes.
"Still good?"
"Yes""Shinso?"
"Complaining productively""Good" Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Map""R-2. chair. protein drink. Recovery Girl. screen dark. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. tired. observation not waiting""Pain absence?"
"No""Gate?"
"Quiet""Emotional stupidity?"
"Moderate""Acceptable" He opened his eyes. On the wall, under the existing signs, someone had taped a temporary new paper while he was watching the module. WATCHING IS NOT WAITING Below it, in smaller handwriting, Hana had added: But watching still needs lunch. Ren stared at it.
"That is not official" Recovery Girl followed his gaze.
"It is correct" Daichi's voice came from off-screen.
"Bentaro supports nutritional observation" Recovery Girl sighed.
"The umbrella is getting worse" Ren smiled carefully. The ribs allowed it. Somewhere across campus, Shinso sat alone for three minutes before lunch and wrote his homework. Observation made too fast. Bakugo almost blasting wall because anger is loud. He crossed out anger. Wrote fear. Then crossed that out too. Wrote bad math with motion. Moment wanted to intervene. When Kaminari asked if he would accidentally answer me. I wanted to make joke before the fear finished existing. Condition before field modules.
No using Brainwashing because someone else failed communication first. He stared at the line. Then added another. If I say no to using it, no one gets to look safer because I am not participating. He looked at that for a long time. Then closed the notebook. Provisional Track had begun with watching. Watching had not been passive. He hated that Ren and Aizawa were right about that.
He hated more that the room felt slightly less like a room trying to decide what to do with him and more like a door that had asked once and would have to keep asking. Outside, Class 1-A moved toward lunch in a noisy cluster. Not his class. Not yet. Maybe. Possible but not guaranteed. Shinso stood. Then followed at a distance that was not hiding and not joining. A route back first. A door later. For today, that was enough.
