By noon, the room had learned to distrust quiet. Quiet had lied before. Quiet had worn medical white and administrative language. Quiet had sounded like a safe route update before a hidden seam opened inside an imaging room. Quiet had stood around Ren's body after Kamino and pretended lowered numbers meant solved instead of only less immediate. R-2 remained on probation. The sign said so. Recovery Girl had approved the sign because, according to her, a room with delusions of innocence needed written correction.
Ren lay beneath the signs and tried not to listen to the places in his body that were listening back. His fever had climbed half a degree since the morning. Not enough for panic. Enough for everyone to stop pretending the room had settled. Dr. Seno stood beside the monitor with her tablet held close to her chest. Recovery Girl occupied the right side of the bed like a small furious nation. Kurose sat near the desk with no papers open because she had learned that folders made Ren's shoulders rise.
Aizawa stood at the door, eyes less red than last night but still offended by light. Hana and Daichi sat close enough to be reached and not close enough to trap him. Nezu was outside the room. That had been Ren's request. Not because he did not trust Nezu. Because too many people around the bed made the bed feel like evidence. Nezu had accepted without making the acceptance into a lesson, which was how Ren knew he had understood. Recovery Girl tapped one finger against the monitor.
"Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. Dr. Seno. Kurose. Aizawa at door. left wrist. back. throat. right shoulder low. right ribs lower" Dr. Seno's tablet chimed softly. Recovery Girl looked at her.
"Do not let the machine sound proud" Dr. Seno muted it immediately.
"It was an alert, not praise""Machines do not get character witnesses in my room" Ren would have smiled if the right side of his chest had not begun to feel like fog. He opened his eyes.
"Right side spreading" Recovery Girl's hand moved.
"Pain absence?"
"Not absence. distance" Hana leaned forward.
"Warm or cold?" Ren swallowed.
"Both. Skin warm. inside cold" Daichi placed his hand open on the blanket near Ren's left side. No touch yet. Available.
"Pressure?" Ren pressed two fingers into the blanket.
"Left wrist present. right ribs far" Dr. Seno's face tightened.
"Pain modulation signal is widening along the old injury response paths" Recovery Girl snapped "In normal language""The graft is trying to reduce pain beyond the local area again""I said normal, not cowardly" Dr. Seno inhaled.
"The pain door is opening too wide" Ren's left hand clenched. Pain door. Garaki's term. Not exactly. Close enough. Kurose spoke before the room could let the phrase settle wrong.
"Foreign pain modulation function" Ren breathed.
"Foreign""Yes" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"Say the rest""Contained under protest""Good" The right side of his body went quieter. Too quiet. His ribs became an idea. His shoulder became a report written by someone else. His breathing still happened, but the feedback from it arrived late, as if his body had mailed the information from another city. Panic rose with reasonable arguments. If he could not feel the damage, he could not know the limit. If he could not know the limit, he could tear before he noticed.
If he could tear before he noticed, Repair Scaffold would try to help. If Repair Scaffold tried to help wrong, Scar Tissue would scar the help. If Scar Tissue scarred the help— The monitor screamed. Recovery Girl's voice cut through everything.
"Ren" His eyes were open but the room tilted.
"Left wrist" she ordered Daichi's fingers slid under his left palm. Ren pressed. Not hard enough. He could not find the pressure. Daichi adjusted.
"Here" Ren gasped.
"Left wrist""Again""Left wrist" Hana's voice came next.
"Warm or cold?"
"Cold right. warm skin. throat dry. back bed. left wrist. left wrist" Kurose stood but did not approach.
"Room name""R-2""Door status""Closed. ours" Aizawa's voice came from the doorway.
"Stopping is data" Ren's breath broke.
"Bad timing""Still data" The right ribs vanished completely. Not numb. Numbness had edges. This had none. Ren made a sound he did not recognize. Recovery Girl moved fast.
"Feed him pressure left side only. Do not crowd the right" Hana's hand went to Ren's hair after his frantic nod. Daichi kept his fingers under Ren's left palm. Dr. Seno watched the monitor, face pale.
"Repair scaffold activation" Recovery Girl did not look away from Ren.
"Where?"
"Right ribs. shoulder. intercostal muscle lines. It is responding to stress as if injury is active" Ren tried to say no. The word did not come out. Heat bloomed beneath the missing cold. That was worse. The Repair Scaffold function woke like a second foreign weather system under the skin, flooding the absent area with warmth, metabolic demand, and the sense of invisible hands preparing to mend tissue that had not been allowed to report whether it was broken. His stomach cramped with sudden hunger.
His mouth flooded with saliva. His skin prickled. Scar Tissue reacted. Pale lines rose under his right shoulder, crossed the collarbone, branched beneath the ribs, and then stopped hard at the center of his chest as if something inside him had thrown a wall between foreign function and heart. Ren arched. Recovery Girl pushed his left shoulder down, not the right.
"Stay on the bed""Trying""Try better""Not useful""Alive is useful. Argue later" Dr. Seno said "Scar containment is increasing. It is building barriers around both graft signals" Kurose's face tightened.
"Barriers or channels?" Dr. Seno looked at the tablet.
"Both maybe. No. It starts as barriers, but the signal is not stopping. It is rerouting along scar-responsive tissue" Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened.
"Say what that means""I do not know yet""Good. Keep not knowing honestly" Ren's right side returned all at once. Pain slammed into him from shoulder to ribs with such clarity that the room went white. He did not scream. That made everyone more frightened. Hana did not tell him he was brave. Daichi did not say he was strong. Recovery Girl did not praise endurance. Aizawa's voice cut through.
"Sound" Ren forced air through his teeth. The sound was ugly. Good. Present. Recovery Girl nodded sharply.
"Better" Ren wanted to hate her. He was too grateful. Then the pain vanished again. This time from the right side and the left wrist. His anchor disappeared. Ren's eyes went wide.
"No" Recovery Girl moved.
"Daichi, pressure to palm. Hana, hair. Kurose, door. Aizawa, voice" Everyone acted without asking why. Daichi pressed firmly into Ren's left palm. Hana's hand slid through his hair with measured pressure. Kurose said from near the door "R-2 is closed. R-2 is ours. Fake paperwork lost. Room still on probation" Aizawa said "Your left wrist is not gone. The information is blocked. There is a difference" Ren shook his head. The panic did not care about differences.
The pain modulation function had swallowed the wrong thing. Not just bad pain. Not just the shoulder. It had taken the left wrist, the anchor, the line back to the room. Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. The monitor screamed again. Repair Scaffold surged after it. Not in one place now. Everywhere Scar Tissue had scar memory. Knees. palms. old fractures. shoulder. ribs. soles. fingers. the places that had learned impact and strain and survival one layer at a time.
The body tried to stabilize everything at once and found too much history. Pale lines rose beneath Ren's skin. Not red. Not glowing like power. Pale like scar tissue under moonlight. They crossed old scars, branched along tendons, wrapped joints, ran from shoulder to wrist, ribs to spine, hip to knee, palm to fingers. Not a full costume. Not armor. Not beautiful. A map. A terrible map. Dr. Seno whispered "Oh" Recovery Girl snapped "No awe" Dr. Seno flinched.
"Sorry""No sorry before alive" Ren heard it from far away. Hana's voice entered after.
"Ren. Left wrist is here even if it is quiet" Daichi pressed into his palm.
"Floor still here" Ren could not feel it. He could see Daichi's hand. That had to count. He looked at the hand. One. Two. Three. Line. He could not feel the line, so he watched it. Here by sight if not by touch. Here by people if not by nerves. Here by choice if not by signal. The thought was not clean. It was enough. The pale lines under his skin shifted. Not outward. Inward. Scar Tissue stopped only building walls. It began drawing routes.
Pain modulation, instead of flooding the left wrist into silence, narrowed into a thread. The wrist returned as pressure first, then ache, then sharp bandage-pull at the edge of skin. Ren gasped.
"Left wrist" Recovery Girl's face hardened with relief.
"Again""Left wrist. Daichi. pressure" Daichi's shoulders shook.
"Here" Repair Scaffold, which had been surging everywhere, slammed into the new routes and slowed. The heat collected along the pale lines instead of spreading through the whole body. The hunger remained, deep and brutal, but it stopped feeling like a command from outside and became a demand the body could name. Fuel. Not obedience. Fuel. Ren's ribs burned. Then held. His shoulder pulsed. Then held.
The lines under his skin formed a lattice over stress points, not continuous armor but a web of living channels that appeared, faded, appeared again with each breath. Dr. Seno's tablet flickered with changing graphs. She did not speak for three breaths. Recovery Girl looked at her.
"Now" Dr. Seno's voice shook.
"Scar Tissue is coordinating both graft-derived signals" Kurose stepped closer.
"Coordinating how?"
"Pain modulation is being gated through scar-responsive channels. Repair scaffold is being limited to areas Scar Tissue identifies as stressed or damaged. The original Quirk is dominant" Ren's eyes found her.
"Dominant?" Dr. Seno looked at him, and the scientist in her fought the decent person and lost in the correct direction.
"Your Quirk is making rules" The words landed. Not Garaki's grafts. Not foreign doors opening wherever they wanted. His Quirk. His body. Making rules. Ren breathed. The room flickered. Not visually. Meaningfully. Pain returned where it belonged. Too much pain. But belonging mattered. The right shoulder hurt. The ribs hurt. The left wrist hurt. His stomach was empty enough to be insulting. His skin felt hot. The pale lines receded to faint traces around old scars.
The monitor kept screaming until Recovery Girl slapped one button.
"Enough editorializing" The alarm stopped. Silence rushed in. No one trusted it. Ren swallowed.
"Contained?" Recovery Girl looked at Dr. Seno. Dr. Seno looked at the data. Kurose looked at Ren. Aizawa looked at the door like he might physically stop the wrong word from entering. Dr. Seno spoke carefully.
"No" Hana's hand stilled. Ren closed his eyes. Dr. Seno continued.
"Not contained in the previous sense" He opened them. She stepped closer, stopping where Recovery Girl allowed.
"Containment meant the graft functions stayed separate and Scar Tissue built boundaries around them. That is not what is happening now" Ren's throat moved.
"What is happening?" Dr. Seno looked at Recovery Girl. Recovery Girl gave one sharp nod. Dr. Seno said "Integration" The word changed the room. Hana's face went white. Daichi's hand tightened beneath Ren's palm. Kurose looked like she wanted to take the word by the throat and demand identification. Ren said nothing. The word was too large. Too close to Garaki's smile. Too close to every cold light and restraint and machine that had tried to call survival success. Recovery Girl leaned over him.
"Listen to me" Ren's eyes moved to her.
"Biological integration is not consent" His breath caught. She spoke each word like a nail driven into the floor.
"Biological integration is not approval. It is not gratitude. It is not ownership. It is not Garaki being right about you. It is your body preventing foreign functions from tearing the house apart" Ren's eyes burned. Kurose added "The word mine still waits" Daichi said "The house is yours before the repairs are" Hana's voice shook.
"He does not get first claim on what your body does to survive him" Ren turned his head toward her. She was crying now. Quietly. Furiously.
"I hate this" she said "I hate that it works. I hate that your body has to be clever with things he forced into you" His mouth trembled.
"Me too""Good" He almost laughed and could not. Hana leaned closer.
"I am allowed to be glad you are not being torn apart and furious about why" Ren closed his eyes.
"Both""Always both" Aizawa spoke from the doorway.
"Working terminology?" Recovery Girl glared at him.
"You are asking now?"
"Yes""Why?"
"Because if we do not name it carefully, someone else will name it badly" The room went quiet. Kurose nodded once.
"He is right" Recovery Girl looked deeply offended by that. Dr. Seno looked at her tablet again.
"The original Quirk remains primary. Adaptive Scar Tissue. The grafted functions are subsidiary, routed through scar-responsive channels. Pain modulation and repair scaffold no longer operate as independent foreign signals during the event. They are being absorbed into an altered Quirk architecture" Ren breathed slowly.
"Not three Quirks""No" Dr. Seno said "One altered Quirk with graft-derived functions" Kurose said "Working description only""Yes" Recovery Girl pointed at everyone with her cane even though the cane had not been in her hand a second ago and might have manifested from rage.
"No one says upgrade" Aizawa nodded.
"No one says gift" Kurose added "No one says Garaki gave him anything" Hana's voice went cold.
"He took" Daichi said "Ren survived what was taken" Recovery Girl looked at Dr. Seno.
"Name" Dr. Seno hesitated. Ren stared at the ceiling. He knew the shape before she said it. The pale lines had not been random. They had not been walls anymore. They had been crossings. Supports. Routes. Scar responding to graft, graft limited by scar, pain returned through channels, repair slowed by boundaries. A lattice. He hated that the word fit. Dr. Seno said softly "Adaptive Scar Tissue: Graft Lattice" No one spoke. Ren listened to the name. Adaptive Scar Tissue. That had been his.
Late-observable, threshold-dependent, trauma-indexed, born from Hana's internal warmth and Daichi's stabilizing grip and a mutation that should never have needed so much hurt to become visible. Graft Lattice. That had not been his. Not originally. Not by choice. But the lattice was not Garaki's either. Garaki had made grafts. Scar Tissue had made rules. Ren whispered "Working description only" Kurose's shoulders lowered.
"Yes" Recovery Girl nodded once.
"Yes" Ren looked at the pale traces fading around his left wrist.
"They are in me" No one corrected him. He continued.
"They are not mine" Kurose said "The word waits" Ren swallowed.
"But they are under my Quirk" Dr. Seno answered very carefully.
"Yes" The distinction did not heal anything. It changed the battlefield. The next hour was ugly. Integration did not complete like a light switching on. It came in waves. Pain modulation tried twice more to widen beyond safe limits. Each time Scar Tissue pulled it back through pale channels that rose under the skin and faded after the signal settled. Repair Scaffold flared after every pain wave, pulling nutrients like fire through the body until Ren shook with hunger and nausea at the same time.
Recovery Girl forced small measured doses of liquid nutrition between episodes, cursing Garaki, metabolic demand, heroics, and the concept of adolescent growth in no particular order. Dr. Seno recorded only what Recovery Girl allowed and deleted one automatic note when Kurose saw the phrase successful integration and went very still. The revised note read functional scar-mediated integration observed under crisis conditions. Kurose accepted that with the expression of someone allowing a defendant to live.
Aizawa moved from the doorway to the side of the room during the second wave. Not close. Closer. Ren noticed through fever.
"Door?" Aizawa said "Kurose has it" Kurose looked toward him.
"I do?"
"You do" She accepted the assignment without drama. Aizawa stood where Ren could see him if he turned his head.
"Stop drill" Recovery Girl looked murderous. Aizawa ignored her.
"Not movement. Command. Ren, when the pain drops, say stop before it becomes useful" Ren's eyes opened through sweat.
"What?"
"You heard me" The right shoulder pain began lowering again. Not dangerously yet. Temptingly. That was worse. The absence offered relief with soft hands. If he let it spread, he could breathe easier. Maybe he could sit up. Maybe he could answer questions. Maybe he could make everyone less worried by seeming better. Maybe he could become useful faster. Aizawa's voice sharpened.
"Stop" Ren gritted his teeth. The word stuck. The pain lowered another fraction. Relief. Danger. Useful. Aizawa said "Stop is data" Ren hated him. Good. Hate was present.
"Stop" Ren forced out The pale line at his shoulder flared. The pain modulation function narrowed hard, snapping back to the immediate shoulder region. Pain returned to the ribs. The breath that followed was awful and real. Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Good" Ren glared weakly at Aizawa.
"I hate improvement" Aizawa nodded.
"Trustworthy" Kurose muttered "Infected vocabulary" Daichi laughed once, badly, then covered his face. Hana cried harder because laughter had become possible and that was worse than only fear. The third wave came from Repair Scaffold. It tried to mend the right shoulder as if the shoulder had permission to become a project. Heat thickened. Scar Tissue responded with a lattice across the shoulder and upper back, forcing the scaffold signal into slower pulses instead of a flood.
The hunger came with it, brutal enough that Ren's hands shook. Recovery Girl held the nutrition straw near his mouth.
"Small" Ren drank. Nausea rose. He swallowed anyway.
"Fuel" Daichi said Ren closed his eyes.
"Not obedience" Hana answered "Fuel" Recovery Girl's face softened for less than a second. Then she ruined it properly.
"If you vomit, I will take it personally and medically" Ren whispered "Threats help""Good. I have many" By the time the fourth wave ended, the pale lines remained visible as faint silver-pale traces under the skin at rest, not glowing, not dramatic, but present around old stress points when his heart rate rose. Dr. Seno looked exhausted. Recovery Girl looked worse, which probably meant she was five minutes from victory or homicide. Ren felt hollowed out. But his body map had returned. Not normal. Changed.
There were new channels in the map now. Places where pain had gates. Places where repair warmth waited behind rules. Places where Scar Tissue had wrapped the graft-derived functions and told them where they could and could not go. The house was damaged. The house was still his. Even if some rooms had been altered without consent. The crisis ended not with triumph but with a bowl of broth. That felt appropriate.
Recovery Girl insisted on broth because the Repair Scaffold demand had emptied him fast enough to frighten people who were already committed to being frightened. Hana held the bowl. Daichi held the approved spoon. Ren objected to the spoon again because some traditions existed to prove continuity.
"The spoon remains insulting" Daichi nodded solemnly.
"Bentaro has expressed solidarity" Recovery Girl said "If the umbrella develops medical opinions, I sedate the family" Hana lifted the spoon.
"Open" Ren opened his mouth because after integrating two stolen graft functions under the command of his original Quirk, arguing with his mother about broth felt like losing perspective. The broth was warm. Simple. Not enough. Necessary. He swallowed. The hunger eased by one grain of sand. Dr. Seno stood near the foot of the bed and looked like she wanted to apologize for biology. Recovery Girl saved her from the mistake.
"Report" Dr. Seno straightened.
"Plain language?"
"Human language" Dr. Seno nodded.
"Ren's original Quirk has undergone a crisis-mediated alteration. Adaptive Scar Tissue remains primary. The grafted pain modulation function and repair scaffold function are no longer behaving as separate, uncontrolled foreign systems. They are being routed through Scar Tissue channels" Ren listened. Each sentence became a step. Dr. Seno continued "Pain modulation can now be locally gated by Scar Tissue, but it still risks spreading under stress.
Repair scaffold can support tissue repair and stabilization, but Scar Tissue is limiting its activity to prevent systemic flooding. The new structure appears to be a lattice of scar-responsive control channels" Kurose said "Working description""Adaptive Scar Tissue: Graft Lattice" Aizawa crossed his arms.
"Combat status" Recovery Girl answered before Dr. Seno could.
"No" Ren did not argue. Everyone noticed. Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"Interesting" Ren closed his eyes.
"Tired""Also improvement""Do not ruin it" Kurose asked "Functional status?" Dr. Seno looked at the tablet.
"Potentially significant. Once stable and trained, he may have controlled pain gating, improved stress bracing, better emergency movement under injury, and limited tissue support during or after strain" Recovery Girl snapped "With costs" Dr. Seno nodded immediately.
"With costs. Fever. metabolic demand. rebound pain. nausea. body-map disruption. risk of overuse. risk of excessive scar response. risk of repair misdirection. unknown long-term consequences" Hana looked at Ren.
"Useful and dangerous" Ren whispered "Useful and unwanted" Kurose said "Both" Daichi's voice was steady.
"Useful does not make it wanted" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Correct" Ren opened his eyes.
"But useful means I have to decide" The room did not answer quickly. That was how he knew they understood. Aizawa spoke first.
"Not today" Ren looked at him.
"Eventually""Yes" The honesty hurt. Good. Pain belonged. Kurose stepped closer.
"Eventually does not mean alone" Hana said "Eventually does not mean because everyone looks relieved" Daichi added "Eventually does not mean because Garaki left a shape" Recovery Girl said "Eventually does not mean before lunch" Ren almost smiled. Nezu entered only after Recovery Girl allowed it and only because Ren nodded. The principal paused at the threshold and looked at him. Not at the monitor first. At him.
"Ren""Principal""I have been told R-2 survived another major event""Room remains suspicious""Wise of it" Recovery Girl said "No charming the patient" Nezu looked at her.
"I would never" Aizawa muttered "You would always" Nezu climbed into the chair near the desk.
"I will be brief" Recovery Girl raised one eyebrow.
"Miracles continue" Nezu ignored her with grace.
"Language has been updated. No external report will call this an upgrade, gift, successful graft outcome, or acquired Quirk set" Kurose's shoulders lowered by one precise degree. Nezu continued "The working medical description is Adaptive Scar Tissue: Graft Lattice. One altered Quirk with graft-derived subsidiary functions under Scar Tissue dominance" Ren breathed slowly.
"Garaki?"
"Does not receive authorship" The answer came fast. Important. Ren's throat tightened. Nezu's eyes softened.
"He proved possibility through atrocity. He does not own what your body built to survive the atrocity" Ren looked down at his left wrist. The pale lines there were almost invisible now. Almost.
"They are in me""Yes""Not mine""The word waits" Ren swallowed.
"Under my rules?" Nezu looked at Recovery Girl. Recovery Girl looked at Dr. Seno. Dr. Seno looked at the data. Then she looked at Ren.
"Beginning to be" Beginning. Not complete. Not clean. Not false. Ren nodded once. That was all he had. The first controlled demonstration happened by accident. Of course it did. Recovery Girl dropped her pen. Not dramatically. Not as a test. It rolled from the tray table to the floor and stopped near the side of the bed where Ren's left hand could see it and absolutely should not reach for it. Ren looked at it. Recovery Girl looked at Ren. Aizawa looked at both of them.
Kurose said "No" Ren said "I was not moving" Recovery Girl said "Your eyebrows are criminals" Daichi leaned down to retrieve the pen. The movement startled Ren because his fever had narrowed the room badly. His left hand twitched toward the rail. The wrist pulled wrong. Pain shot bright and immediate through the bandage. Pain modulation flickered. For the first time, Ren felt the gate before it opened. A small thread at the wrist. A door trying to widen. He inhaled sharply.
"Stop" Everyone froze. The pale line around his wrist flashed and narrowed. The pain reduced by a fraction. Not vanished. Reduced. Enough to breathe. Still present enough to know the wrist existed. Recovery Girl stared. Aizawa's eyes sharpened. Dr. Seno looked at the monitor. Ren stared at his wrist.
"I felt it" Recovery Girl stepped closer.
"What?"
"The door. Before spread""Body map?"
"Present""Pain?"
"Lower. still there""Panic?"
"Surprised""That one I will allow" Dr. Seno whispered "Local gating" Kurose looked at her.
"Human""Pain modulation stayed local under conscious stop command" Aizawa's mouth tightened.
"That is training" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"That is rest followed by training someday" Aizawa nodded.
"Someday" Ren looked at his wrist. The pain remained. He had stopped it from disappearing. For the first time since Garaki, control felt less like enduring and more like refusing the wrong kind of relief. Hana touched his hair.
"You stopped" Ren nodded.
"Before useful" Aizawa said "That is the improvement" Ren closed his eyes. The sentence settled somewhere deep. Not praise for enduring. Praise for stopping. A disgusting miracle. The day narrowed after that. Broth. fever check. map check. short sleep. wake. pain. food. nausea. map check again. no philosophy before hydration. no reports within line of sight. no external visitors. no screens except medical. no discussion of Hero Course, license, Shock, archives, Endeavor, or the future beyond the next approved meal.
Recovery Girl enforced all of it with the serene brutality of a person who had never once mistaken being liked for being correct. But the future still found edges to press through. It came when Kurose read a message on her tablet and went still. Ren noticed because he noticed stillness too well.
"Kurose" She looked up.
"Not today""What?"
"Whatever you think I am about to say, not today" He waited. That worked better than asking sometimes. She sighed.
"U. A. administrative review has begun discussing transfer implications after Kamino" Aizawa looked toward her from the door.
"I told them tomorrow""You told them many things. They have continued existing unwisely" Recovery Girl's face darkened.
"If anyone says entrance exam near my patient, I will make them need one" Ren's stomach turned.
"Transfer" Hana's hand stilled. Daichi leaned forward. Aizawa spoke before panic could become wrong math.
"No decisions today" Ren looked at him.
"But?" Aizawa's eyes did not soften.
"But danger has already reached you" Kurose's face hardened.
"Abduction is not an entrance exam""No" Aizawa said "It is not" Ren watched them. Aizawa continued "But leaving someone untrained because the reason we noticed the risk is ugly would be cowardice disguised as ethics" Kurose's mouth tightened. She did not disagree. Not fully. Ren's pulse climbed. The monitor noticed. Recovery Girl moved.
"No" Ren breathed.
"Map?"
"Not optional" He closed his eyes.
"R-2. bed. Hana. Daichi. Recovery Girl. Kurose. Aizawa. left wrist. shoulder. ribs. hungry. tired""Good. Future?"
"Not today""Again""Not today" Kurose nodded.
"Correct" Ren opened his eyes. But something had changed anyway. He could feel it in the room. Not a decision. A possibility. Before, Hero Course had been a distant argument made of intelligence, desire, and a body that could barely survive what the story demanded of it. Now his body had changed. Not into a powerhouse. Not into a weapon. Into something that might remain operational when collapse tried to remove him from the field. That was dangerous. That was useful. That was unwanted.
That was also, horribly, hero-shaped. Ren hated the thought. It stayed. Late that evening, after the fever lowered by another small mercy and the room dimmed into medically approved quiet, Toshinori sent one sentence through Recovery Girl. She read it only after threatening him through the phone first. Ren was awake enough to listen. Recovery Girl looked at the screen, then at him.
"Toshinori says he heard the name" Ren blinked.
"Graft Lattice?"
"Yes""What did he say?" Recovery Girl looked deeply annoyed.
"He said Tell him the name is not the owner" Ren stared. Hana's breath caught. Daichi looked down. Kurose, still near the desk, closed her eyes. Aizawa looked away, which was the closest he came to crying in public. Ren swallowed. The name is not the owner. Adaptive Scar Tissue: Graft Lattice. A working description. A route. A scar map. Not Garaki's title. Not consent. Not mine. Not yet. But under my rules. Beginning to be. Ren's left hand moved beneath the blanket. One. Two. Three. A line beneath. Here.
This time, when the pain modulation flickered near the wrist, it did not swallow the gesture. It stayed small. Local. Present. He felt the line. The room held. The house was still damaged. But something inside it had stopped letting the stolen doors open wherever they wanted.
