Chương 103: The Shape of Inheritance

The new room changed the way people entered. Observation room one had made every visit feel like an inspection. The secured recovery suite had made every visit feel like an argument with furniture. R-2, despite the locked door and the sealed window and the request button beside the bed, had begun to make visits feel almost like visits again. Almost was doing too much work. Still, it mattered.
Hana came in carrying nothing, because carrying things remained a privilege negotiated by adults who had never emotionally depended on a kitchen spoon. Daichi came behind her with Bentaro, tagged, inspected, and temporarily permitted to lean against the wall near the door under what Kurose called "umbrella supervision" with the dead voice of someone who had lost too many meetings to ordinary people with persistence. The orange cat mural stared through the open doorway from the hall.
Shinso had named it Professor Scream. Aizawa had denied the name official standing. Everyone used it anyway. Ren sat at the fixed desk with a soft pen in one hand, three approved papers in front of him, and the wall panel above the desk reminding everyone that the room was not in charge. Bentaro's laminated photograph watched from the shelf in Hana's scarf.
Beside it, a new approved object had arrived that morning: a family photograph printed large on soft backing, too big to pocket, too dull to weaponize, too important to look at for too long. It showed Ren at eleven, sitting on the kitchen floor with a biology textbook open across his knees, Hana laughing at something off-camera, and Daichi holding a pan in one hand like he was defending dinner from a siege. Ren had not remembered that photo until it appeared in the room. Now it existed on the shelf.
Proof that his life had not started with classifications. Hana saw him looking at it and smiled too quickly.
"You were furious that day" Ren frowned.
"I was?"
"You said the textbook diagram of the knee was oversimplified" Daichi nodded.
"You were eleven and already personally betrayed by cartilage""That sounds like me""It was deeply alarming" Hana said Ren looked at the photo again. The boy in it had no idea he would one day become a medical meeting. That seemed unfair. A knock sounded on the open door. Recovery Girl stood outside with Kurose and Nezu. Behind them was a doctor Ren did not know, a woman in her late forties with gray threaded through her black hair and an expression careful enough to be either kindness or institutional danger.
She carried no folder in her hands. The folder was held by Kurose instead. That was probably deliberate. Ren's palms stayed cool. Hana noticed his glance. Daichi noticed Hana noticing. Everyone noticed too much now. Recovery Girl entered first.
"This is Dr. Maruta Seno. Quirk pathology and developmental expression. She is not here to poke you, scan you, surprise you, or make grand declarations before tea" Dr. Seno bowed slightly.
"That introduction covered most of my prepared reassurance" Recovery Girl looked at her.
"Good. Saves time" Ren looked at Kurose. Kurose said "We discussed whether another review was necessary""Was it?"
"Yes""Because of my classification?"
"Because of your future care. The classification made everyone louder" Nezu climbed into the chair nearest the wall panel, glanced up at the sentence, and said "I approve of the room's demotion" Hana said "Thank you" Daichi added "It is on probation" Nezu's ears lifted.
"How wise" Recovery Girl pointed at the bed.
"Ren. Sit somewhere that does not turn posture into argument" Ren moved from the desk chair to the heavier chair near the shelf. Hana and Daichi sat opposite him. Kurose remained near the door. Dr. Seno sat only after Ren nodded. Nezu sat already because he was Nezu. Recovery Girl stood because sitting would have suggested she trusted the meeting. Dr. Seno began without opening the folder.
"I reviewed what I was permitted to review. Not everything. Enough to say the earlier Quirkless classification was understandable under standard childhood testing" Ren looked at her.
"Understandable is doing work""It is" she said "But not the same work as correct" Hana's hands tightened in her lap. Daichi's fingers moved once against his knee. Dr. Seno continued "At four years old, Quirk testing is still built around observable activation. Output. transformation. emitter activity. heteromorphic development. measurable physiological deviation. Ren did not present any clear active signature then" Ren said "Because I did not have one?"
"Because the test did not find one" That was a better answer. Worse. Better. Dr. Seno leaned forward slightly.
"Some Quirks are threshold-dependent. They require a specific kind of stress, age, hormonal state, injury, environmental factor, or repeated exposure before they become observable. Most are still detected earlier through indirect markers. Yours appears to have hidden unusually well" Recovery Girl snorted.
"As if the brat needed practice hiding things" Ren looked at her. She looked back.
"Do not pretend you are not historically annoying" Hana murmured "He was a very polite child" Daichi said "Polite and impossible are not opposites" Ren stared at the floor. Dr. Seno smiled faintly, then let it fade before the medical part returned.
"There is another question. Whether your Quirk has a familial basis" Ren's hands warmed. Not much. Enough. Hana saw. Ren opened his hands on his knees. Dr. Seno did not look at them too long. Good.
"My answer is yes" Hana inhaled. Daichi went very still. Ren looked up. Dr. Seno opened the folder at last, but turned the first page toward Hana and Daichi, not Ren.
"Hana Akiyama. Your Quirk has been described in civilian records as thermal sensitivity and mild homeostatic adjustment. Informally, you notice fever, cold shock, heat stress, inflammation, exhaustion, and stress changes faster than an untrained person should. You also regulate your own temperature slightly more efficiently than baseline" Hana looked uncomfortable with being summarized.
"That makes it sound more useful than it is" Recovery Girl said "Parents always say that about minor Quirks until their children inherit the interesting parts" Hana's mouth tightened. Daichi looked at her. Dr. Seno turned the next page.
"Daichi Akiyama. Your Quirk is listed as balance-grip stabilization. Mild enhancement of grip consistency, load distribution, tendon response, and postural correction under strain. Not superstrength. Not hardening. More like your body knows how to keep itself from slipping, tearing, or misaligning under manageable force" Daichi looked at his hands.
"I used to win stupid climbing games" Hana said "You used to fall less stupidly""Important distinction" Ren's throat tightened despite himself. Dr. Seno placed both pages side by side.
"Ren's Quirk is not visually similar to either of yours because it is not expressing at the same level of the body. But the pattern is traceable" Ren stared at the pages. Hana's line: regulation under stress. Daichi's line: structural stability under load. Dr. Seno placed a third page below them. Ren Akiyama. Working Quirk designation: Adaptive Scar Tissue. Secondary description: stress-responsive connective tissue adaptation. Late-observable, threshold-dependent, trauma-indexed. Hana made a small sound.
Not fear exactly. Not surprise exactly. Recognition arriving with teeth. Dr. Seno spoke more carefully now.
"From your mother's side, Ren appears to inherit heightened internal stress detection and regulation. Heat, inflammation, tissue stress, systemic strain. From your father's side, he appears to inherit structural stabilization under physical load. Connective tissue bracing, tension distribution, anchoring under stress. The mutation combines those traits at a deeper level" Ren could hear his own heartbeat. Dr. Seno's voice remained gentle but did not soften the meaning.
"His body detects damaging stress, records it, and later attempts to stabilize against similar stress through scar-mediated adaptation" Silence. The room did not hum. Or maybe Ren stopped hearing it. Hana looked at him. Daichi did too. Their faces were not relieved. That hurt more than Ren had expected, because some part of him had wanted them to be. Wanted the explanation to make everything cleaner. Wanted heredity to become comfort. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road.
If you spot it on Amazon, please report it. Instead, Hana looked like someone had told her she had given her son a knife without knowing it. Daichi looked worse. He looked like someone had held a door open and discovered it led to a room Ren had been trapped in for years. Ren said "That makes sense" His own voice sounded too calm. Hana's head turned sharply.
"No" Ren blinked.
"No?"
"No, you do not get to make the first thing you say about this that makes sense" He looked down. Recovery Girl muttered "Good mother" Hana ignored her. She leaned forward, hands open on her knees because everyone had learned open hands now.
"Ren. Look at me" He did. Her eyes were wet. Angry. Not at him. That mattered.
"I gave you the part that feels fever" His chest tightened. Daichi's voice came lower.
"And I gave you the part that holds" Dr. Seno said gently "Inheritance is not blame" Daichi looked at her.
"I know" He sounded like Ren. Too much. Hana heard it too. Her face broke.
"Knowing is not accepting" she said Ren almost laughed and almost cried because apparently the sentence had infected the family. Dr. Seno lowered her gaze for a moment. Then continued.
"You did not give him trauma. You did not design this expression. Quirk inheritance is not arithmetic. Children do not receive moral assignments through genes. This is biology becoming strange, not parents causing harm" Hana wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
"That sentence is probably correct" Dr. Seno nodded.
"I know it may not feel useful yet" Daichi leaned back.
"So his Quirk is ours, but not ours""Yes" Dr. Seno said "A mutation. A convergence. Yours are minor regulatory and stabilizing traits. His became adaptive structural memory after damage" Ren looked at his hands. They were warm now. No lattice. No ridging. Just warm. Recovery Girl stepped closer but did not interrupt. Hana asked "Is that why he looked Quirkless?" Dr. Seno nodded.
"Most likely. The Quirk did not announce itself through an active output. It required injury, recovery, repetition, and time. Minor signs may have existed, but they would be easy to dismiss. Unusual scarring. fever after strain. high pain tolerance. stiffness. inflammatory episodes. better survival than expected after certain injuries, but not dramatic enough to look like a Quirk" Hana closed her eyes. Ren knew what she was seeing. Childhood bruises. Fever after a fall.
A scraped knee that looked worse than it should and then hardened oddly. Doctors saying some children healed strangely. Ren saying it did not hurt that much. Ren learning that pain was information before anyone gave him better language. Daichi asked "Did we miss it?" The question entered the room like a dropped blade. Dr. Seno answered without hesitation.
"No. Not in any way I would call negligence" Daichi did not move. She continued "If you had brought those signs to most clinics, they would likely have told you what you were told already. Monitor. Rest. Some children scar differently. Quirkless children still have bodies. Without a clear event and specialist review, this would have hidden" Recovery Girl said "And now that we have clear events and specialist review, it is still a pain in my office" Ren looked at her. She pointed at him.
"That is reassurance""It sounded like an insult""Efficient" Hana gave a broken laugh. Small. Real. Dr. Seno turned the page again.
"This also affects future training. Ren's Quirk should not be treated as healing. It is not regeneration. It is not immunity. It is adaptation after stress, and the cost matters. Forcing injury to train it would be medically and ethically unacceptable" Aizawa's voice came from the doorway.
"Finally, a sentence I enjoy" Everyone turned. He stood just outside, arms folded, looking as if he had arrived five minutes ago and heard enough to become professionally vindicated. Ren said "You were listening?"
"Yes""Is that allowed?" Aizawa looked at Nezu. Nezu smiled.
"In this case, yes" Aizawa stepped in just far enough to count as part of the meeting.
"If anyone suggests controlled injury training, they answer to me first" Recovery Girl said "Second" Hana said "Third" Daichi said "No. We can all go at once" Kurose, near the door, added "I will handle paperwork after" Ren stared at them. Dr. Seno looked like she was trying not to smile. Aizawa looked at Ren.
"This matters. Your Quirk rewards survival after damage. That does not mean damage is training" Ren nodded.
"I know" Aizawa's eyes narrowed.
"Do you?" Ren breathed.
"No""Better" Dr. Seno said "Training should focus on detection, boundaries, recovery quality, safe movement, and preventing unnecessary activation. If Scar Lattice appears, the goal is controlled disengagement and medical review, not pushing duration" Recovery Girl pointed at Ren.
"You will not turn your own connective tissue into a scoreboard" Ren said "That image was terrible""Good" Kurose coughed. Recovery Girl sighed.
"Trustworthy. Whatever nonsense vocabulary you children have created" Shinso's influence had reached medicine. Hana looked from Dr. Seno to Ren.
"There is something I need to ask" Dr. Seno nodded.
"Please" Hana's voice shook but did not break.
"If his body remembers damage, does that mean every time he is hurt, it keeps it?" Dr. Seno took a slow breath.
"Not exactly. It does not appear to store every minor pain as permanent change. But significant stressors, repeated patterns, and severe injuries may leave adaptive traces. Some useful. Some costly. Scarring is repair, but too much repair can stiffen what should remain flexible" Daichi looked at Ren's arms.
"Too much holding can make movement harder" The sentence was quiet. It did not sound like medicine. It sounded like fatherhood finding the metaphor it least wanted. Dr. Seno nodded.
"Yes" Ren looked away. The window showed courtyard trees moving behind sealed glass. Hana whispered "I hate this Quirk" The room went still. Ren did not know what his face did. Hana saw it immediately.
"No. No, Ren, look at me" He did. She leaned forward so hard Daichi almost reached for her and stopped himself.
"I do not hate you. I do not hate your body. I hate that something in you had to become good at surviving hurt. I hate that a part of me and a part of your father became that in you. I hate the story around it. Not you" Ren's throat closed. He tried to answer. Could not. Daichi spoke instead.
"We love the boy. We can hate the knife" Ren covered his eyes with one hand. His palm was warm. No lattice. Just warm. Recovery Girl moved closer but did not touch him. No one rushed. No one turned the moment into a medical event. That was good. That was unbearable. Ren lowered his hand after a while.
"I do not know how to feel about it" Hana let out a breath that almost became a sob.
"Good. Neither do we" Daichi nodded.
"Family activity" Ren laughed once. It came out wet and small. Daichi looked relieved enough to age backward by half a day. Dr. Seno closed the folder.
"I recommend a written family-facing explanation. Not a full technical report. Something you can reread when guilt or fear tries to rewrite it" Kurose nodded.
"I'll draft it with Recovery Girl" Recovery Girl said "I'll remove anything sentimental" Hana looked at her.
"Do not remove all of it""I said anything sentimental, not anything true" Nezu, who had been silent for some time, spoke from his chair.
"Truth often survives better when it is not made decorative" Aizawa looked at him.
"That was decorative" Nezu's eyes brightened.
"Was it?"
"Yes" Kurose said "Unfortunately" The meeting ended not because the topic was finished, but because Ren's hands stayed warm too long and Recovery Girl decided emotional metabolism had limits. Dr. Seno left after bowing and telling Ren she would not schedule another review without notice. Nezu left with her. Aizawa remained long enough to say "No injury training" again, as if Ren might have forgotten in the last four minutes. Then he left too. Kurose stayed. Hana and Daichi stayed. The room felt different.
Not better. Different. The family photo on the shelf had become heavier. Ren stared at it. Hana followed his gaze.
"You were angry at cartilage" Ren gave a weak laugh.
"Apparently""You still are, probably""Cartilage remains suspicious" Daichi leaned back.
"Good. Keep one enemy manageable" Hana reached across the space between them, stopped, and asked with her eyes. Ren nodded. She took his hand. No object. No hidden route. Just hand. Her fingers were warm in a way his Quirk had probably inherited and mutated into something neither of them would have chosen. Daichi placed his hand over both of theirs. His grip was light and stable. The kind of grip his body knew too well. Ren looked at their hands. Regulation. Stability. Memory. Damage. Family. Not blame.
Not comfort either. Something more complicated and more honest. Kurose looked away toward the wall panel. THIS ROOM IS NOT IN CHARGE For once, the sentence seemed almost insufficient. Because the room was not in charge. The Quirk was not entirely in charge either. Nor heredity. Nor fear. Nor categories. Not even the enemy, not yet. The afternoon passed slowly after that. Ren slept for forty minutes and woke feeling as if his bones had been translated into another language.
Hana and Daichi had gone to guardian housing. Kurose had left him the family-facing explanation draft, approved for him to read when ready. He did not read it immediately. Instead, he opened his chart. He wrote: Dr. Seno review. Quirk likely inherited as mutation. Hana: thermal/stress perception and mild regulation. Daichi: balance/grip/load stabilization. Ren: stress-responsive connective tissue adaptation. Damage detection plus structural stabilization after injury. Late-observable. Threshold-dependent.
Not active output at age four. Quirkless classification understandable, not complete. Not healing. Not regeneration. Not immunity. Not training through injury. Parents did not cause it. Inheritance is not blame. Hana hates the Quirk, not me. Daichi: We love the boy. We can hate the knife. He stopped. That line deserved its own space. He wrote it again lower on the page. We love the boy. We can hate the knife. His hands were cool now. He looked at them. They did not look like Hana's. They did not look like Daichi's.
They were his. Still, he could feel the shape of inheritance underneath them now, not as destiny, not as a clean explanation, but as two small parental gifts folded too deeply into a body that had learned the wrong lesson from pain. A knock came at the glass. Shinso. Of course. He entered after the checks, took one look at Ren's face, and said "Genetic meeting?" Ren blinked.
"How did you know?"
"You look like someone explained you to yourself badly" Ren almost laughed.
"Not badly""Worse. Accurately""Yes" Shinso sat. No soup this time. Just himself. For once, that was enough. Ren said "My Quirk is linked to theirs" Shinso nodded.
"Figured it had to be something like that""You did?"
"Your mom can sense half a fever from across a room and your dad holds reality in place by standing calmly near it. You being a body that notices damage and refuses to fall apart is not exactly from nowhere" Ren stared. Shinso looked uncomfortable.
"What?"
"That was clearer than the meeting""Good. I wasted fewer adults" Ren looked down.
"Hana thinks she gave me the part that feels fever. Daichi thinks he gave me the part that holds" Shinso's face changed.
"Ouch""Yes""They didn't give you the hurt""I know""Do you?" Ren sighed.
"Apparently not" Shinso leaned back.
"My Quirk isn't my parents' fault either. Still spent years being angry at faces that looked too familiar when people flinched" Ren looked at him. Shinso shrugged.
"Family resemblance gets weird when the world hates the part that came through" The sentence entered quietly. Ren wrote it down. Shinso groaned.
"Do not quote me""You say useful things when you forget to prevent it""I am becoming unsafe for myself" Ren's mouth twitched. Shinso nodded toward the chart.
"So what now?"
"No injury training. Recovery quality. Boundaries. Better explanation. Maybe less thinking my Quirk is unrelated and more thinking it is unfairly related""Sounds healthy and miserable""Yes" Shinso looked at the shelf photo of eleven-year-old Ren with the textbook.
"Is that you judging cartilage?"
"Yes""Tiny nerd""Likely""Good shelf object" Ren looked at the photo.
"Yes" The evening brought a screened message from Midoriya. He had been awake long enough to ask too many questions and be told to stop by every medical professional available. The message was audio only, probably because video had been vetoed after he tried to bow from a bed. His voice was weak but brighter than before.
"Recovery Girl said I'm not allowed to ask for the full explanation, so I'm not asking. I just wanted to say Kota called me stupid properly. He looked mad, so I think that's good. Also Uraraka told me you're angry too. That helped. I don't know why. I'm still trying not to apologize first. I failed twice. Mom caught both. Um. Here" Ren listened to it twice. Then recorded back.
"Here. Failing twice is data, not doom. Tell Kota his delivery was successful" He paused. Then added "I learned today that my Quirk is not disconnected from my parents. That made things clearer and worse. Apparently both can happen. Rest" Recovery Girl approved it with only one complaint.
"Do not encourage him to think failing is a spreadsheet" Kurose said "It may be too late" At night, after the room dimmed and the orange cat mural vanished into the hallway dark, Ren read the family-facing explanation. Kurose and Recovery Girl had written it plainly. Ren's Quirk appears to be a rare, late-observable mutation combining stress-regulation traits from Hana Akiyama and structural-stability traits from Daichi Akiyama. This does not mean either parent caused Ren's injuries, pain, or current risk.
Inheritance describes origin, not blame. The Quirk should be understood as an adaptive response after significant physical stress, not as healing, invulnerability, or a reason to seek damage. Future care should prioritize safety, recovery, consent, and Ren's personhood beyond Quirk function. Ren read the paragraph until the words stopped moving. Origin, not blame. Adaptive response, not healing. Personhood beyond Quirk function. He placed the paper on the fixed desk. Then opened his chart one final time.
He wrote: A Quirk can come from family without being their fault. A body can inherit warmth and stability and still turn them into scar tissue under pressure. Origin is not blame. But origin still hurts when it has faces you love. He stopped. Then added: I am not disconnected from them. That is comforting and terrible. Outside, the courtyard trees moved behind sealed glass. Inside, the shelf held Bentaro, the family photo, and the wall panel. The room was not in charge. The Quirk was not a stranger anymore.
That did not make it kinder. Ren placed both hands open on the desk. Cool. Empty. His. Somewhere beyond U. A., someone would probably find his biology interesting. Inside R-2, for tonight, it was something else first. Family. Complicated. Unfair. Real.
