Chương 151: Passable Is Not Ready

The mock exam began with a sentence nobody liked. PASSABLE IS NOT READY Aizawa wrote it at the top of the board in Gym Gamma and stepped aside so everyone could stare at it properly. They did. With resentment. Kaminari raised his hand. Aizawa said "No" Kaminari lowered it.
"I did not even ask yet""You were going to ask why passable is not ready" Kaminari looked wounded.
"Am I that readable?" Jiro said "Yes" Sero nodded.
"Very passable. not ready" Kaminari pointed at him.
"That was elegant bullying" Sero bowed.
"Thank you" Bakugo crossed his arms and glared at the board.
"Passable means you passed" Aizawa looked at him.
"In a mock drill, passable means the shape exists. Ready means it holds under fatigue, noise, mistakes, unfamiliar pressure, scoring, triage, refusal, and the ability to stop before the exam turns into proof" Bakugo's jaw shifted.
"Tch" Mina stared at the sentence with her hands tucked into her sleeves.
"So today is everything?" Kurose, standing beside Aizawa with the most dangerous folder yet, answered.
"Today is a compressed mock of both stages. Not full exam length. Full exam principles" Kaminari whispered "That means everything but smaller and meaner" Mizushima from H. U. C. smiled.
"Accurate" No one liked that she approved. The gym had become a small version of the licensing site they had been imagining for weeks. One half of the field held target-zone structures, cover, sightlines, and elevated lanes for the first-stage elimination simulation. The other half held rescue zones: collapsed storefront, blocked road, underpass, medical tags, civilian actors, refusal markers, and enough noise sources to make everyone distrust buckets on principle.
Class 1-B waited on the opposite side in exam-candidate formation. Not the whole class. Enough. Kendo, Monoma, Tetsutetsu, Tokage, Awase, Shiozaki, Pony, Kaibara, Rin, and Komori. Vlad King stood behind them. Power Loader and Hatsume had support gear tables marked REVIEW ONLY. Hatsume wore a headband that read I AM OBSERVING ETHICALLY. Kurose had accepted it only because the alternative had apparently been worse.
Recovery Girl sat at the medical station with Ren's live private-first readout available only to her, Dr. Seno, and Ren's own gear. No public numbers. No red lights. No spectacle. Ren sat at the Provisional Track entry point, target vest modified for his chair and body, brace secure, support patch quiet, hands resting on the blanket. His desk board was not here, but the lines had followed him anyway. First is a route, not a rank. Scoring is not betrayal. Stationary is not finished. Outcome to civilian.
map to staff. Shinso stood beside him with his collar in neutral mode and scarf wrapped around his shoulders. His face said he had slept poorly and would admit this to no one. Aizawa faced them all.
"Mock structure. Stage one. target elimination. Ten minutes compressed to four. Objective. avoid elimination, score, preserve group shape. Stage two. rescue. Five minutes compressed to three. Objective. triage, stabilize, extract, communicate, respect refusal, adapt priority. Scoring will be partial and imperfect. You will receive a passable, unstable, or failed marker for each stage" Kaminari lifted one finger.
"Is unstable worse than failed?" Aizawa said "Unstable means the result happened but the process cannot be trusted yet" Kaminari slowly lowered his finger.
"That is worse in a more personal way""Good" Aizawa looked toward Ren and Shinso.
"Provisional Track. You are not required to complete both stages today. You are required to report honestly. If either of you withdraws, that can still be a successful mock depending on timing and reason" Bakugo muttered "Only here does quitting get graded" Recovery Girl said "Withdrawal before collapse is a clinical victory" Bakugo did not argue. That was also training. Kurose stepped forward.
"Before we begin. Public summaries. Full class" Groans rose. Aizawa did not move. The groans died. One by one, they spoke. Midoriya said "My training is my responsibility. The exam is not about anyone else's legacy. If rescue-looking bait appears, I confirm route and call support before moving" Uraraka said "If I make someone weightless, I explain first when safe. I ask before touch. I do not float first because I am scared" Iida said "I use short route commands.
If a civilian refuses, I reduce harm around the refusal. I do not make motion into rescue without assessment" Todoroki said "My tools are not the civilian's obligation. If I remove one tool, I name the next one. I choose proportion" Bakugo said "My temper is not your strategy. Kamino is not an operational question. If they expect chase, I choose angle" The room stayed quiet after that because every time Bakugo used the language properly, reality shifted a little.
Kirishima said "I do not become wall unless assigned. Protection without role can make me a hazard" Jiro said "Voice contact is a task. I confirm what the person can hear or point to, not just whether I sound clear" Kaminari said "Panic is not a route. If I am scared of losing control, I map before sparks. Loud is not always first" Mina said "I can care without crowding. The thing they care about may be why they move, not why they cannot" Asui said "Quiet can be urgent.
Calm needs information or it becomes dismissal" Sero said "Restraint must be named and ended. Stepping back is still helping if someone else is safer" Yaoyorozu said "Triage includes consent paths. The hit may be individual, but the window can be collective" Then Shinso.
"My name is Hitoshi Shinso. Candidate hero name Responder. My Quirk is voice-based. In active rescue or training, you do not have to answer me unless you choose to. I use verbal grounding first. If I say no power, words are safer. If agency remains, I protect it. If I use control, I name the reason and end it" Aizawa nodded once. Ren followed.
"My name is Ren Akiyama. Candidate role rescue-stabilization. My Quirk supports short controlled stabilization within clear limits. If I say stop, do not encourage me to continue. Do not pull me through a route. My gear alerts me first. If I stop, rescue continues through transfer, position change, or information. I do not discuss medical or trauma details during operations" Mizushima's pen moved.
"Good. Begin stage one" The first buzzer sounded like a door shutting. Class 1-B did not wait. They hunted. Not cruelly. Well. Tokage split immediately, sending hands through angles that made the field feel larger than it was. Pony's horns curved target balls around cover. Komori's mushrooms made central shelter unreliable. Awase locked one movable panel into place to force Class 1-A into a narrower lane. Kendo pressured left flank. Tetsutetsu drove center. Monoma talked. Obviously.
"Ah, U. A. enters the mock exam with public summaries and emotional architecture. How inspiringly fragile" Bakugo did not chase. He grinned. That was almost worse.
"Known bait" Shinso's voice cut through from middle-rear.
"Shape holds" Class 1-A moved. Not perfectly. Better. Midoriya and Uraraka held left without rushing toward the first distress-looking bait. Iida kept route calls short. Yaoyorozu shifted central cover after Komori contaminated it, not before. Jiro called sound angles. Sero made tape lanes that guided movement rather than trapping teammates. Todoroki created small ice lips instead of walls. Kaminari called his position before firing a controlled short burst at a clear angle.
Mina used movement to draw Tokage's floating hand into Asui's line. Ren moved rear-left with Shinso in line of sight. Not center. Not hidden. Visible and expensive. His chair rolled along a lane that looked too slow to matter until Pony's horn ball curved toward his back target and he stopped moving completely. Stationary. Pony corrected. Ren pivoted half a meter. The ball missed. Tokage tried the low hand. Ren let the side target go. Hit. One target lost. He called "Side lost.
not finished" Shinso repeated "Side lost. not finished" No one collapsed around him. Good. Class 1-B adjusted. Kendo pushed toward him, not to eliminate, but to make Class 1-A flinch. Kirishima's body loaded. He stopped.
"No wall" Good. Bakugo used the angle instead. A low blast cut off Kendo's follow-through lane without forcing her back dangerously. Sero's tape snapped across the gap. Jiro threw and hit Kendo's shoulder target.
"Jiro point. Sero window. Bakugo angle" Yaoyorozu called Hit individual. window collective. Good. Monoma saw Shinso watching the shape. He smiled and moved close enough to be a problem.
"Responder, surely this is where your silence proves limiting" Shinso ignored him. Monoma threw at his side target. Shinso caught with scarf, but the motion pulled his shoulder.
"Map. shoulder mild. no Quirk. still role" He did not look at Aizawa. Good. He redirected the caught ball low toward Monoma's footline. Monoma jumped. Ren's chair had been stationary behind him. Not finished. Ren threw. The ball struck Monoma's lower target.
"Candidate shot you" Ren said Monoma clutched his chest though the target was nowhere near it.
"Again. I suffer recurring narrative insult" Kendo shouted "Focus" Too late. Kaminari, who had been waiting for a clear line, tagged Monoma's shoulder target. Monoma stared.
"Was I just punished by teamwork?" Bakugo yelled "You were punished by being loud" If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. Aizawa called "Language later" Stage one kept moving. Class 1-A lost targets. Many. Kaminari lost one when he overcelebrated not panicking. Mina lost one trying to help him recover. Todoroki lost one when he made an ice lip too neat and predictable. Iida lost one because his route changed faster than his body did.
Midoriya lost one to Tokage after he stopped himself from rescue bait and forgot his back target. Ren lost a second target after accepting a hit rather than making a sharp pivot. He reported it.
"Back lost. two lost. exit condition if third threat. map present" Recovery Girl watched. Shinso moved closer but not shield.
"Route change. Ren rear-left reduced. do not collapse" Good. At three minutes, Class 1-B attempted a coordinated push at Ren and Shinso. Known hazard. Responder and stabilizer. Rumor and visible chair. Silence and stationary. Kendo came from front-left. Tokage from high-right. Monoma through speech. Pony through curve. Tetsutetsu through pressure. Class 1-A almost clumped. Almost. Then Midoriya called "Shape, not wall!" Uraraka echoed "Shape, not wall!"
Bakugo blasted forward as if chasing Monoma, cut angle instead, and forced Pony's curve wide. Todoroki made a narrow ice ridge, not a barrier. Asui pulled Kaminari out of a bad line. Jiro called Tokage's hand position. Sero created a retreat lane. Yaoyorozu called "Ren has exit. Shinso has line. hold shape" Shinso's collar pulsed throat strain. He lowered his voice.
"Monoma. behind you" Monoma almost answered. He did not. Kendo did glance. Micro-reaction. Shinso threw. Hit Kendo's side target. Direct point. He reported without stopping.
"No Quirk. micro-reaction window. point" Ren saw Tokage's floating hand commit toward Shinso's back target. He did not protect Shinso. Not shield. He struck the hand with a ball. Miss? No. Information. The altered hand released badly. The ball flew wide and clipped Tetsutetsu's side target instead. Tetsutetsu shouted "Friendly fire by geometry!" Kaminari screamed "Panic geometry has evolved!" Jiro said "Do not name it!" The buzzer sounded. Stage one ended. Everyone stopped. Breathing hard. Targets counted.
Class 1-A and Provisional Track had not dominated. They had not collapsed. Several students remained with one target. Some with two. Ren had one target left. Shinso had two. Bakugo had two and looked personally offended that the remaining ones existed at all. Mizushima and Vlad King conferred with Aizawa. The first marker appeared on the board. STAGE ONE: PASSABLE The room exhaled. Then Aizawa added a second word beneath it. UNSTABLE EDGES Kaminari pointed weakly.
"That feels like being hugged by a cactus" Aizawa said "It should" Stage one debrief was short by design. No one got to drown in analysis before stage two. Aizawa called "Three minutes recovery. Water. Map. No strategy spirals" Recovery Girl moved first toward Ren.
"Map" Ren closed his eyes.
"Gym Gamma. chair. two targets lost. one remaining. left wrist pain. shoulder stable. ribs quiet. no Graft Lattice brace. no gate spread. tired. map present""Continue to stage two?" Ren breathed. Medical possible. Not necessary. Proof possible. Dangerous. He looked at his hands.
"I want to" Recovery Girl stared.
"That is not an answer" Ren swallowed.
"Stage two role is lower mobility. rescue-stabilization. I can continue with reduced contact maximum two seconds and no Graft Lattice bracing unless emergency override" Recovery Girl looked at the numbers. Then at his face.
"Condition. If you use emergency brace once, you exit after transfer. No second brace" Ren nodded.
"Accepted" Shinso drank water with the expression of someone being betrayed by hydration. Aizawa looked at him.
"Map""Gym Gamma. throat moderate. collar useful. shoulder mild. no Quirk activation. one direct point. pressure. map present""Continue?"
"Yes. Condition. if voice strain rises, I switch to hand signals and Jiro relay" Jiro nodded from two meters away.
"Accepted" Aizawa gave the second-stage briefing while H. U. C. actors entered the field. Rescue zones. Six civilians. One silent red tag. One loud medication issue. One child separated from adult. One adult refusing Shinso's voice. One adult refusing Ren's contact. One trapped civilian behind unstable barrier. Class 1-B would interfere as competing candidates creating route pressure and occasional misinformation. Not villains. Not enemies. People with their own priorities and incomplete information.
Aizawa said "Second stage begins" The buzzer sounded. The field became human. Immediately worse than targets. The loud adult shouted about medication. The child cried. The separated adult yelled from behind barrier. The silent red-tag civilian sat too still. The refusal actors saw Shinso and Ren and reacted on cue.
"No voice guy!"
"Not the chair one. someone else!" The words hit. They did not stop the field. Shinso answered without stepping too close.
"Accepted. Jiro, civilian refuses my voice. take contact. I monitor route silently" Jiro moved.
"Accepted" Ren answered his refusal.
"Accepted. I will not touch you unless emergency threshold is crossed. Tetsutetsu, physical support. I monitor angle" Tetsutetsu moved from Class 1-B support side.
"Taking support" Good. Yaoyorozu called "Silent red tag first. Jiro with refusal civilian. Kaminari loud medication contact. Uraraka child. Todoroki barrier route. Bakugo shelf scan. Ren angle monitor. Shinso route relay" Short enough. Good. The silent red-tag civilian had shallow breathing. Midoriya and Asui moved to stabilize. No promise. No panic. The loud adult shouted "My insulin! My bag!" Kaminari answered "Medication matters. You matter. Bag route being assigned.
stay seated" Tokage retrieved the bag with split hand after Iida confirmed hazard. Good. The child cried "Mom!" Uraraka crouched.
"Your adult can hear you. You are not first because someone has breathing trouble. You still matter. Come to my hand" The child came. Good. The barrier adult shouted "Why are you leaving me?" Todoroki answered "We are not leaving. barrier movement may drop debris. I am marking route and checking support" Small ice marker. No weather. Good. Then misinformation arrived. Monoma shouted from competing candidate lane.
"Center route open! Move them through center!" It was false. Not malicious. Exam-like. Incomplete view. Iida almost relayed. Stopped.
"Asui. center route check" Asui from above answered "False. ceiling marker. no center" Iida called "Center unsafe. left route only" Good. Shinso saw the voice-refusal civilian backing toward the yellow line while focused on Jiro. He lifted one hand. Pointed to floor. Jiro caught it.
"Yellow line. step right" The actor stepped right. No voice. Good. Ren watched the contact-refusal civilian under Tetsutetsu's support. The angle shifted.
"Tetsutetsu. lower brace two centimeters""Lowering""Too far. up one""Up one""Held" The actor looked at Ren. Still scared. Still waiting. Ren said "Support stable. Tetsutetsu has the weight. I am monitoring" Outcome first. Good. Then the barrier shifted. The trapped civilian cried out. Kirishima moved to brace. Bakugo shouted "Wait!" Kirishima stopped. Bakugo had seen the shelf connection.
"Brace left, not front. front makes it drop" Kirishima adjusted.
"Left brace" Good. The child reached safe zone. First extraction. Medication bag reached loud adult. The silent red-tag civilian needed movement but route left was blocked by Class 1-B candidate Awase anchoring a panel for another civilian. Not enemy. Conflict. Yaoyorozu called "Awase, release panel? silent red tag needs route" Awase answered "My civilian trapped if I release" Priority conflict. The field tightened. Good triage feels unfair. Midoriya looked like he wanted to solve both with his body.
Aizawa watched. Midoriya breathed.
"Priority compare. My silent red tag shallow breathing. Awase civilian status?" Awase shouted "Leg trapped. airway clear. stable but cannot move" Yaoyorozu answered "Shallow breathing moves first. Need alternate brace for Awase civilian" Todoroki said "I can place small support" Awase nodded.
"Accepted" Todoroki placed support. Awase released panel. Route opened. Silent red tag moved. Second extraction. Good. Time fifty seconds left. Still three civilians waiting. The voice-refusal civilian suddenly crossed the yellow line toward the wrong route. Jiro called "Stop. hazard" They kept moving. Shinso pointed. They did not look. Red line in two steps. He had promised no voice prompt unless threshold. Harder not emergency. One step. Red line. Emergency.
"Immediate safety. stop moving" The actor answered "No!" Brainwashing took.
"Step back behind green tape" They stepped back.
"Release" Immediately.
"Quirk used because red hazard crossed after nonverbal and teammate verbal redirection failed. one movement command. released. agency restored. You are behind green tape. Jiro has contact" Jiro stepped in.
"You are safe behind green tape. You do not need to answer him" Good. Outcome to civilian. Then staff if safe. Shinso looked at Aizawa.
"Map after field" Aizawa nodded. Good. Ren's contact-refusal civilian panicked when Tetsutetsu shifted. The brace slipped. Sign dropping. Immediate. Ren was closest. He spoke.
"Emergency sign support. sign only" The actor flinched. No time. Contact. Pain. Gate. Stop. Graft Lattice flared low. One.
"Sign held. Tetsutetsu reset" Tetsutetsu reset. Two.
"Release in one" Release.
"Outcome. sign held by Tetsutetsu. you are not under falling support. map after field" Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened. One emergency brace. Exit after transfer. Ren backed the chair.
"Ren exiting active field after emergency brace. angle monitoring only from boundary" Aizawa nodded.
"Accepted" The field continued around him. That mattered. No one stopped because he exited. No one made his stop the scenario. The remaining civilians were stabilized. Not all moved. The buzzer sounded. End. For a moment, there was only breathing. Then Mizushima began the evaluation.
"Two extractions completed. Four stabilizations maintained. medication retrieved. one emergency restraint by Brainwashing used, named, released, and transferred. one emergency stabilization by Ren used, named, released, and exited according to condition. Waiting civilians informed. Priority conflict with Class 1-B resolved through status compare. No false promises detected" Kaminari made a tiny sound. Mizushima looked at the board.
"Stage two marker" Aizawa wrote: STAGE TWO: PASSABLE Then beneath it: MORE STABLE THAN STAGE ONE The room reacted carefully. No explosion. No cheering. A shared breath. Mina cried anyway, silently, and Jiro pretended not to see while standing closer. Bakugo looked at the board.
"Passable again" Aizawa said "Yes" Bakugo's mouth twisted.
"Keep going" Kurose wrote it again, because apparently she enjoyed torment. PASSABLE MEANS KEEP GOING Bakugo pointed at her.
"You are doing this on purpose""Yes" He looked less angry than he wanted. Recovery Girl called Ren first.
"Map. now" Ren's hands rested on the blanket.
"Gym Gamma boundary. emergency sign support once. exited after transfer. left wrist gate local. shoulder braced. ribs quiet. pain present. tired. no body-map loss. guilt low. frustration. map present""Pain absence?"
"No""Collapse?"
"No""Status?"
"Not ready. passable" The room heard. It landed. Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Map" Shinso breathed slowly.
"Gym Gamma. red hazard Brainwashing once. one command. released. civilian confirmed by Jiro. throat moderate. collar helpful. discomfort. no regret. map present. not ready. passable" Kurose's face softened barely.
"Good" The final debrief happened with both classes seated on the floor. No one had enough energy to pretend chairs were necessary. Aizawa wrote three columns. PASSED SHAPEUNSTABLE EDGENEXT FIX He did not ask for feelings first. Kindness. Yaoyorozu began.
"Passed shape. priority compare with Class 1-B. unstable edge. too much dependence on my central calls. next fix. distributed priority calls" Iida followed.
"Passed shape. shorter route language. unstable edge. nearly relayed unverified center route. next fix. verify before amplify" Midoriya said "Passed shape. route compare before movement. unstable edge. wanted to solve priority conflict physically. next fix. ask status before moving body" Uraraka said "Passed shape. child extraction with truth. unstable edge. voice shook when saying not first. next fix. practice waiting information" Bakugo said "Passed shape. did not chase. unstable edge.
almost yelled at competing candidate for blocking route before asking status. next fix. status before threat" Everyone looked at him. He glared.
"What?" Aizawa said "Correct" Bakugo looked away. Shinso said "Passed shape. no voice with refusal until threshold. used Quirk at red. unstable edge. looked for staff after release. caught it late. next fix. civilian confirmation first" Ren said "Passed shape. emergency support named and ended. exited after transfer. unstable edge. wanted to stay boundary monitoring after exit even though condition said active exit. next fix. clarify what exit allows before run" Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Important" Aizawa wrote: EXIT MUST HAVE ROLE TOO Ren nodded. Good. The mock exam ended with no applause. Instead, Mizushima handed Aizawa the H. U. C. evaluator sheet. He read it. His expression did not change. That was cruel. Then he looked at the class.
"H. U. C. assessment. As of today, this group is not ready for the actual exam" The room froze. Aizawa continued.
"You are also no longer unready in the same way" Silence. Mizushima smiled slightly.
"Passable means the necessary behaviors exist. Ready means the behaviors survive repetition. You have shape. You need durability" Kurose wrote: READY MEANS DURABLE Kaminari stared at it.
"I hate how fair that is" Jiro nodded.
"Me too" Aizawa looked at the date board near the wall. September 2.
"Tomorrow, no full mock. Recovery and precision. The day after, targeted fixes. Then another mock. If the shape improves and your maps remain honest, we continue toward the exam. If not, conditional participation changes" The room absorbed that. Not punishment. Route. Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso looked back. Passable. Not ready. Still in the hallway. Good. After training, Ren slept for forty-four minutes. Not collapse. Sleep.
When he woke, the first thing he said was "Passable" Hana, sitting beside him, answered "Yes" Daichi said "Not ready" Ren looked at him. Daichi held up both hands.
"You said it first" Ren breathed.
"Good not ready" Hana's eyes shone.
"Good not ready" Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Good eating next" Ren sighed.
"Curriculum""Correct" He added to his board after food. PASSABLE IS NOT READY READY MEANS DURABLE EXIT MUST HAVE ROLE TOO Across the wing, Shinso added: PASSABLE MEANS THE BEHAVIOR EXISTS READY MEANS IT SURVIVES REPETITION Then he stared at the board. Too long. True. He kept it. At dinner, the common room was tired in a way that almost felt clean. No one had passed the exam. No one had failed out of the future. They had become passable. That was less glorious than victory and more useful than hope.
Ren came for five minutes and thirty-eight seconds because the mock had cost him and pretending otherwise would make every board in the building hunt him down. Bakugo noticed.
"Short ugly" Ren nodded.
"Mock cost""Good" Shinso sat with barley tea and did not comment. Kaminari, visibly struggling, whispered to Jiro "Can I say passable dinner attendance?" Jiro whispered "No" He nodded.
"Private passable" Aizawa appeared at the doorway.
"Eat" Everyone did. The exam date stayed on the board. September 2. Below it, someone added: PASSABLE MEANS THE DOOR EXISTSNOT THAT YOU RUN THROUGH IT No one removed it. The mock exam had not made them ready. That was the point. Ready was not a single success.
Ready was a behavior surviving the second run, the worse noise, the unfair score, the refusal, the wrong priority, the failed route, the known bait, the direct hit, the late exit, the ugly number, and the moment when continuing would look more heroic than stopping. They were not ready. Not yet. But the door existed. And for the first time, it looked less like destiny and more like something that could wait until they reached it properly.
