Chương 37: The Truth

"Because your family are hunters, the kind that hunt and kill beings like me." This information shook Allison to her core. She stared at him, hoping to find signs that this was a joke, but she was disappointed to see his serious face. She placed her head on the pillow and stared blankly at the ceiling. Allison felt like the whole world was foreign to her. First Lucas telling her about supernatural beings, and now her family being the ones hunting those beings.

It was like her whole life had been inside a giant bubble, and now that bubble had burst open. She recalled the times spent with her parents, with her father, and her strict but loving mother. Now she had the illusion that they were strangers. Lucas gave Allison time to process everything. Compared to how he thought she would react, this reaction was normal. Finding out about him and then learning that your parents are hunters is a lot to take in. Allison took a few minutes to contemplate and calm down.

She turned toward him, staring at his face. Allison thought for a moment, not knowing if she was ready to know more, but eventually she still asked.

"If my dad doesn't know what you are, then why would he want me to stay away?"

"Good question." Lucas smiled and nodded.

"My family were hunters too, and the relationship between our families was not friendly." He continued, thinking of the cause of the conflict. Although she was surprised, Allison could digest this better. After all, she had learned that he was basically a superhuman, so this news felt more normal. But this still made her confused. What could have happened between them to make her father so adamant about staying far away from him? Lucas, as if reading her thoughts, spoke again.

It made sense. Since her family kept this secret from her, this should be the reason for her father's actions. Raising her head, she smiled slightly.

"It seems my dad was right about you." Lucas gave her a helpless look, but he was happy that she finally smiled.

"I thought you deserved to know the truth. You're strong enough to get past this." This was for her own safety. Keeping her in the dark would do more harm than good. This town was basically a zoo for shapeshifters. You could walk down the wrong street, and your friendly neighborhood wendigo would be there to eat you. Allison gazed at him intently, her heart warming as she felt truly trusted. There was a brief silence between them as they looked into each other's eyes.

Allison then remembered something and asked curiously,"Are you also a hunter?" Lucas gave her a slight nod. She became even more curious, but her face wrinkled with worry as she thought of something.

"Is this why I found you injured?" Lucas gave her another brief nod. Seeing that she wanted to continue asking questions, he gently touched her cheek, stopping her from speaking.

"It's too soon for you to know about that." Allison stopped after seeing his heavy expression filled with worry, although this confirmed her suspicions. Then Lucas changed the subject.

"How long will you stay?" She blinked a few times, then responded, "I can stay two more hours. I told my parents that I would stay at a friend's house." He smiled, then pulled her into his arms. They stayed close to each other like that while briefly falling asleep. Two hours passed by, and it started to become dark outside. Lucas slowly opened his eyes, his gaze drawn to Allison's peaceful expression. He gently stroked her face. Looking at the clock, he hesitated for a second before gently shaking her body.

"Let me sleep a little longer." She brushed his hand away while mumbling. Lucas was amused by the sight, then continued waking her up. Allison opened her eyes, then froze after remembering where she was. She looked away, embarrassed.

"It's time. I'll escort you home." Lucas added, not wanting her to go home alone. She looked at him in confusion.

"But I drove here." He nodded, then explained to her,"I'll follow you with my car to make sure you arrive home safely." She nodded, knowing he was worried about her safety. After grabbing her stuff, Allison walked toward the stairs with Lucas right behind her. After getting into their cars, they quickly took off. After driving for ten minutes, they arrived. He stopped some distance away from her house. Allison got out of the car and looked toward her house to see if anyone was there.

After that, she gave him a smile, then waved at him. Lucas waved back, smiling at her sneaky behavior. After seeing her enter the house, he turned on the engine and started driving back home. Halfway through the journey, Lucas suddenly stopped the car. He heard a faint but deep roar, as if calling for someone. His eyes transformed as he gazed in the direction it was coming from. His eyes turned cold as he stared into the distance. Then he turned the steering wheel, changing direction.
