Chương 26: Choices

It was a large compound bow; it was even more advanced than her own bow. Allison looked at Lucas, then at the bow, and asked in confusion: "Why do you have a bow?" Lucas smiled at her and answered: "I told you, my family's hobby is hunting."

'Hunting naughty animals,' Lucas thought to himself. Allison gave him a suspicious look, then ignored him. She grabbed the bow, admiring it. Lucas looked at her, being engrossed in studying the bow, smiled, and told her: "We will go practice with it." Allison focused on him again; her face brightened when she heard him saying that.

"You can take the bow and wait for me in the car; I will come in a second." He then handed her his car keys. Allison nodded, then she took the bag and left. Seeing her leaving, Lucas opened a drawer and took his gun, then he put it in his bag. Although it's daylight, you never know what could happen. Lucas then hurried downstairs. As he was walking, he scanned his house; seeing some of his doors already changed, he nodded, satisfied.

Soon he arrived at the car; he grabbed the keys from Allison, and without saying anything more, he started the engine. Time passed by; 20 minutes later, they arrived at the shooting range. Allison looked curiously around, then turned towards him and asked: "Is this where you take lessons?" Lucas nodded as he replied: "Yeah, it's here." Then the two of them entered a building; it was filled with all kinds of firearms. Lucas showed the clerk his membership card and asked for a private shooting range.

He explained some basic rules that must be followed and left. Lucas turned towards Allison, and with a smile, he gestured her towards the target. Allison, reading his meaning, nodded and took the bow and loaded it with an arrow. Allison breathed in as she felt the bow in her hands; her muscles relaxed as she looked at the target and took aim.

"Whoosh" The released arrow traveled fast, then hit the target. Lucas looked at the arrow embedded right in the center of the target and nodded approvingly. Allison's head was raised slightly while looking at Lucas eagerly. Noticing her look, Lucas smiled.

"You're amazing." Allison smiled happily at his praise. Then Allison continued shooting a few more arrows. Seeing Allison being so focused, he could only helplessly remind her:"Aren't you forgetting something?" Allison made a sorry expression, then gave Lucas the bow. Lucas grabbed the bow from her, and then started adjusting himself. Seeing his awkward stance, Allison laughed, then approached him. She leaned against his back, and with her hands, she took control, adjusting his posture.

Lucas tensed for a moment when he felt her body touching his back, then relaxed and let her direct him. He took aim and released the arrow.

"Whoosh" The arrow hit the outer ring of the target.

"Not bad for your first time." Allison encouraged him. Lucas lowered his head hearing this, then looked at her eyes; their faces were now close to each other's. He could feel her warm breath brushing against his face. Allison stared in his eyes, then glanced at his lips that were close to hers. A struggle was happening in her mind, not knowing whether to listen to her heart or her family.

Lucas stared deep into her eyes, as if he knew her struggles, then looked at her one more time before breaking away from her and taking a step forward. Allison was stunned by his actions. Before she could even think more, he had already made a decision. She looked at his back; she felt that her heart was being stabbed by a needle. Her hands trembled slightly, then she heard his voice.

"What are you daydreaming about? Let's continue practicing." She then looked at him; his gaze towards her was calm, looking unbothered as if nothing had happened. She then started helping him practice with the bow. As time passed by, she noticed that his attitude towards her had changed; although not cold, the smile that was always present when he talked to her was gone. She felt her heart tighten once more. Soon, a couple of hours passed by; they only spoke a few words.

Lucas looked at his watch and thought that it was enough for today.

"Let's go, I'll drive you home." He then placed the bow in the bag and closed it. Allison nodded. After getting to the car, they soon took off towards her house. After a few minutes of awkward silence, they arrived at her house. Stopping the car, he only said one word:"Goodbye." Allison struggled for a moment, not knowing what to say, then helplessly replied: "Goodbye."
