Chương 78: The Conditions of Yes

Monday arrived with rain. Not dramatic rain. Not the kind that struck windows like warning or turned streets into mirrors for people about to make life-altering decisions. Just ordinary rain, steady enough to make umbrellas necessary and quiet enough to make the city feel as if it were thinking before speaking. Ren disliked that. Weather should not match administrative dread. Daichi opened Bentaro at the apartment door with ceremonial care.
The umbrella clicked, resisted, then unfolded with the sound of an elderly joint deciding to participate in society. Hana looked at it.
"Reliable enough" Daichi lifted it proudly.
"Good enough" Ren stared.
"You gave the umbrella a threshold""Bentaro has survived many conditions" Shinso stood half inside the doorway with his own plain black umbrella, looking at the patched fabric, bent ribs, reinforced tape, and the small charm Hana had tied to the handle at some point Ren still did not understand.
"That umbrella has a fuller support network than most people" Hana handed him a wrapped lunch.
"You are part of one now. Eat later" Shinso froze. Ren noticed. Daichi noticed. Hana pretended not to notice because she was the most dangerous of them. Shinso accepted the lunch with the careful grip of someone receiving evidence.
"Thank you" No sarcasm. The rain grew louder for one second against the hallway window. Ren looked at him.
"Status?" Shinso stared at the lunch.
"Yellow. Food acceptance. Social implication. No sarcasm because your mother is armed with rice" Hana smiled.
"Good report" Shinso closed his eyes.
"The word again" Ren almost smiled. Almost. They left together because the conference schedule had made separate travel inefficient and the family had decided inefficiency was not a moral value when anxiety already had enough doors. Hana and Daichi walked beside Ren. Shinso walked on the other side, technically separate, practically included, umbrella angled so rain did not hit the wrapped lunch bag. The station was crowded. The train smelled like wet fabric and morning patience.
Ren held the green-edged folder against his chest and did not open it. Inside were his result sheet, his camp consent position, the medical conditions, the preliminary camp category, and one page he had not shown Hana or Daichi yet. Peer anchor assignment considerations. Not because he was hiding it. Because he had not wanted to make Shinso into a subject over dinner. That mattered. The page was not a request. Not yet. It was a possible structure.
Possible structures could still become cages if people spoke about them as if the person inside had already agreed. At U. A., the rain softened the campus edges. Students moved between buildings under umbrellas, hoods, textbooks held over heads, and the occasional Quirk-based weather cheat that teachers pretended not to see if it did not disrupt traffic. The main building looked less like a fortress under rain and more like a place trying to appear reasonable before demanding unreasonable courage from children.
Kurose met them at the entrance. No clipboard visible. That was worse.
"Good morning" Hana nodded.
"Kurose-sensei" Daichi closed Bentaro carefully.
"Good morning" Shinso looked from Kurose to the hallway.
"Is this where family conference splits from candidate conference?" Kurose's gaze moved to him.
"Yes. Your review with Aizawa begins in room three. Akiyama family conference is room two. Joint peer-anchor discussion will occur only if both preliminary conferences support it and both students consent to discussion" Shinso's shoulders shifted. Subtle. Important. Ren looked at him. Kurose continued "Your consent is required before your name becomes functional in someone else's support plan" Shinso looked at the floor. Then nodded once.
"Good" He said it before realizing. His face changed. Daichi looked proud. Hana looked merciful and therefore said nothing. Shinso glared faintly at reality and followed Kurose down the hall until Aizawa appeared from a side door like a sleep-deprived omen.
"Shinso""Yes sir""Try not to look like a hostage at your own conference" Shinso's mouth twitched.
"Ambitious" Aizawa's eyes moved to the lunch bag in his hand.
"Food?"
"Logistics" Aizawa looked toward Hana. Hana smiled. Aizawa said "Good" Shinso groaned quietly. Ren watched him enter room three. Then room two opened. The Akiyama family conference included Kurose, Recovery Girl, Nezu on a secure monitor, and Aizawa's empty chair because he would join later if the peer-anchor discussion proceeded. All Might was not present. That was correct. This was not about the Symbol. This was not about inheritance, prophecy, legacy, or impossible futures wearing a smile.
It was about a boy, his parents, a conditional door, and the documents everyone had brought so fear would not have to carry the whole conversation alone. Ren sat between Hana and Daichi. Not because he needed protection. Because family conferences were allowed to include family. Recovery Girl looked at him first.
"Status""Yellow. Conference anticipation. No heat. No fragment. Rain association neutral" Daichi blinked.
"Rain association?" Ren said "If everything becomes data, weather eventually enters the room" Kurose said "Unfortunately true" Hana placed one hand on Ren's folder. Not opening it. Just there. Recovery Girl looked at both parents.
"Thank you for coming" Daichi's mouth moved. Then he chose not to say something polite and useless.
"We are afraid" The room changed. Not dramatically. Correctly. Hana looked at him. Then nodded.
"Yes" Kurose wrote nothing for a moment. Nezu's expression remained attentive. Recovery Girl folded her hands.
"That is an appropriate starting point" Daichi exhaled.
"I do not want to be talked out of fear by professional language" Ren's throat tightened. Hana's hand stayed on the folder. Kurose nodded once.
"Then we will not use professional language to erase it. We will use it to decide what fear is warning us about" Daichi looked at her. That answer helped. He did not look relieved. Good. Hana opened the folder and placed Ren's one-page camp consent position on the table.
"I read this yesterday" Ren looked at her. She had waited until morning. He had handed it to her over breakfast. If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. She had read silently, then made tea, then asked no questions until the conference because some things needed a table large enough to hold witnesses. Kurose looked at Ren.
"May I read it aloud?" Ren's pulse rose. Not heat. Pulse. He looked at Hana. Then Daichi. Then the monitor.
"Yes" Kurose read.
"I want to go" The first sentence sounded smaller in her voice. No. Not smaller. Clearer.
"Wanting to go is not evidence that going is safe. Fear of going is not evidence that staying is right" Daichi closed his eyes briefly. Kurose continued.
"Medical clearance must be based on behavior, not optimism. The camp role must be specific before departure. Restrictions must be enforceable, not decorative. I must be allowed to report fear or fragment association without automatic shame or automatic removal unless threshold requires it. No one may treat my participation as proof that I am almost transferred. No one may use my presence as evidence that danger is acceptable because it is managed. Emergency extraction must be real.
Peer anchor assignment must include that student's consent. I must not be alone with a trigger I have already reported. If I say yellow-red, the response cannot be push through by default. If I say stop, there must be a procedure. If staff says stop, I obey. My yes is real only if I am allowed to remain a person after giving it" Silence followed. The good kind. Painful. Not empty. Recovery Girl looked at Ren over her glasses.
"That last line is medically relevant" Ren frowned.
"How?"
"Because if your yes turns you into equipment, you will stop reporting like a person" Ren looked down. That was true. Awful. True. Kurose placed the page between the parents and the staff side of the table.
"Ren's position is not a request for permission without limits. It is a conditional consent framework. That is stronger than enthusiasm and more useful than defiance" Hana's voice was quiet.
"He wrote emergency extraction must be real""Yes" Recovery Girl said"What does real mean?" Kurose opened a second document.
"Real means there is a named staff authority empowered to remove him from any block or from camp entirely if medical, psychological, fragment-related, or safety thresholds trigger. It means removal does not require Ren to agree in the moment. It also means removal is not framed as punishment" Daichi leaned forward.
"Who has that authority?" Recovery Girl answered.
"I do medically. Kurose does for Cross-Course participation and psychological compliance. Aizawa does during field training blocks if he is supervising. Nezu holds override authority. Camp staff will receive written procedure" Hana asked "Would he be alone when removed?"
"No" Kurose said "No isolation policy applies. Medical extraction includes escort. Emotional debrief includes staff present. Guardian contact depending on threshold level" Ren listened to his own life become procedure. It should have felt dehumanizing. It did. A little. It also felt like someone placing railings over a cliff he had already admitted he wanted to approach. Both could be true. Daichi tapped the page.
"If he says stop" Kurose answered immediately.
"Activity stop. Status assessment. Medical or staff review. Depending on category, resume with modification, shift role, remove from block, or trigger extraction. The word stop must produce action" Hana looked at Ren.
"Would you say it?" There. The room went still around the real question. Ren did not answer quickly. He could say yes. He wanted to say yes. He had written it. Writing was clean. A forest would not be clean. A trigger would not be clean. A peer watching him might help. Or make him feel like failure. Staff might hear. Or he might decide yellow-red was manageable because he wanted the door. He said "I do not know if I would say it soon enough without structure" Hana's mouth tightened. Recovery Girl nodded.
"Honest" Ren continued "That is why I wrote there must be a procedure. I need reporting before stop, not only stop at collapse. Yellow. Yellow-red. Heat. Fragment. Those need to count before I have to choose the final word" Kurose wrote then.
"Good" Daichi rubbed both hands over his face.
"I hate that good answer""So do I" Ren said Hana placed her hand over his.
"Good" The word hurt. It held. Nezu spoke from the monitor.
"This is the central question of conditional participation. Can the system catch escalation before Ren must rely on heroic self-denial?" Ren looked at him. Heroic self-denial. Nezu's phrases were dangerous. Kurose said "Our answer must be yes before camp approval" Recovery Girl added "And evidence must support it" Hana asked "What evidence?" Kurose turned to the medical and behavioral sheet.
"Two weeks stable recovery. No unreported scar heat. Sleep compliance. No high-trigger training outside approved blocks. Continued accurate reporting in ordinary and triggered contexts. Family confirmation that home recovery is stable. Peer structure consent if peer anchor is used. Camp role finalized. Fragment association reviewed again. Guardian consent after all restrictions are reviewed" Daichi looked at the list.
"So today is not yes""No" Kurose said "Today is whether conditional yes remains discussable" Hana breathed out slowly.
"I can discuss conditional yes" Ren's chest tightened. Daichi looked at her. Then at Ren. Then at the page.
"I can discuss it too" Not permission. Not yet. But not no. Ren looked down. His hands had curled around the edge of his folder. No heat. He loosened them.
"Status" Recovery Girl said"Yellow-high. Relief. Fear. No heat" Hana squeezed his hand once. Not celebration. Recognition. The first half of the conference continued for forty minutes. They reviewed excluded activities. High-intensity combat sparring. Unsupervised forest route. Night movement without staff escort. Deliberate Scar Tissue provocation. External patrol simulation. Direct villain-response exercise. Hana asked what counted as deliberate provocation. Recovery Girl answered in detail.
No exposure to heat, cold, impact, strain, or pressure for the purpose of producing adaptation. No asking him to brace structures to test Scar Tension. No using him as environmental durability example. No endurance contests. No forcing scar heat through emotional triggers. Daichi asked whether accidental triggers would remove him. Kurose said not automatically. Recovery Girl said if staff mishandled a known trigger, staff would be reviewed too. That sentence seemed to matter to Daichi. Good.
Fear needed someone besides Ren to be responsible. Nezu reviewed the preliminary role. Controlled Cross-Course Candidate. Rescue coordination observation. Hazard communication drills. Low-risk adaptive environment training. No external patrol. No unsupervised route. Daily recovery checks. Communication redundancy. Guardian contact channel. Ren listened.
Each condition made camp more possible and less like the camp he wanted in the secret part of himself that still imagined proving something by walking into danger and coming out useful. That secret part was quieter now. Not gone. Never gone. Quieter. Kurose closed the first section.
"Before we proceed to peer-anchor discussion, Ren must consent to discussing his support structure with Shinso present, and Shinso must independently consent in his conference" Ren looked toward the door. Not through it. At it.
"Can I ask what his conference concluded first?" Kurose nodded.
"Aizawa has sent preliminary note. Shinso passed practical threshold. Conditional camp review opened. No external field clearance yet. Possible support participation under controlled conditions. Peer-anchor discussion permitted if he consents" Ren nodded.
"What does peer anchor require from him?"
"Awareness range. Status prompt compliance. Reporting if he notices isolation, performance mask, or threshold escalation. Not medical responsibility. Not protection duty. Not emotional caretaker""Can he refuse during camp?"
"Yes""Can I refuse him as peer anchor if it becomes bad for him?" Kurose paused. Then wrote something.
"Yes. That is now explicit" Daichi looked at Ren. Hana's expression shifted. Proud. Sad. Both. Ren said "I consent to discussion if he does" Kurose opened the door. Aizawa entered first. Shinso followed. He looked tired in the specific way conferences produced when they were successful enough to be exhausting. His folder was under one arm. His eyes went first to Ren. Then to Hana and Daichi. Then to the staff.
"Status?" Ren asked Shinso blinked.
"Yellow. Entering other family conference. Social threat. Consent pressure watch. No Quirk pressure" Kurose nodded.
"Good report" Shinso sat in the chair at the far side of the table, not beside Ren, not beside staff, exactly where he could refuse to belong to any side too quickly. Aizawa remained standing behind him. That might have looked like pressure. It did not. It looked like someone keeping the exit visible. Kurose summarized.
"Peer-anchor discussion is now open. Shinso, you have been identified as one possible peer anchor for Ren during limited camp blocks because of existing communication patterns, demonstrated response to status reporting, and shared Cross-Course structure. This is not an assignment yet. You can refuse discussion or refuse the role. Refusal does not affect your candidacy" Shinso's face went still. He looked at Ren. Ren held his gaze.
"I did not ask them to make it you" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"I know" Ren continued "I thought of you first. I stopped before making that a plan" The room held the sentence. Shinso looked away. Then back.
"Good" He sounded annoyed by it. That made it more honest. Aizawa spoke.
"Peer anchor is not babysitting" Shinso said "That was going to be my first objection""I know. Find a better one" Shinso scowled. Kurose handed him a single page. Possible Peer Anchor Role — Discussion Draft Shinso read. Awareness range. Status prompting. Report isolation. No medical responsibility. No physical protection duty beyond ordinary team conduct. May disengage if role harms own performance or safety. Must not become sole support structure. Must consent before assignment.
Must retain right to refuse individual blocks. He read it again. Then said "This is less terrible than expected" Aizawa said "Try not to sound disappointed" Shinso looked at him.
"No promises" Hana leaned forward slightly.
"Hitoshi" Shinso went still at the first name. Not because she had never used it. Because in this room, with staff, it sounded different. Hana noticed and softened nothing too much.
"I need to ask something as Ren's mother. Not as staff. Not as policy" Shinso swallowed.
"Okay""If you say yes because you think you owe us for dinners, I will object" The room went silent. Ren's throat tightened. Shinso stared at her. Hana continued "Food is not a contract. The chair at our table is not a debt. If you say yes, it must be because you choose the role, not because you think our family made a place and now you must pay rent with your safety" Shinso's face changed. Something raw moved under the sarcasm and did not find it in time.
Daichi added quietly "Also because you are a student, not a support device" Shinso looked down. His hands were on the page. One thumb pressed into the edge. Aizawa did not speak. Good. Ren did not speak either. Better. Shinso breathed once. Then again. When he spoke, the words were rough.
"I hate that you said that before I could pretend I was only thinking tactically" Hana nodded. Shinso continued "I would say yes partly because Ren asks status correctly and does not make my Quirk the whole room. I would say yes partly because if he goes and I am not there, I will imagine every stupid way he might decide not to report until after" Ren winced. Fair. Shinso glanced at him.
"And I would say yes partly because I want to go too" There. His own want. Not Ren's shadow. Not debt. Want.
"To be near Hero Course training?" Kurose asked"Yes. To observe. To move. To prove" He stopped. Aizawa said "Careful" Shinso's jaw tightened.
"To gather evidence that my training can survive outside U. A. walls without making my Quirk the reason everyone looks twice" Kurose wrote.
"Better" Shinso looked exhausted by better. He looked at Hana again.
"I am not saying yes because of soup" Hana's mouth trembled slightly.
"Good""I am saying conditional yes to discussion. Not automatic yes to every block" Kurose nodded.
"Accepted" Ren breathed out. He had not realized he was holding it. Shinso turned to him.
"If I do this and you start turning me into your external conscience, I stop" Ren nodded immediately.
"Yes""If you hide heat because you think I will report it and make things worse, I report harder""Yes""If I am overloaded, I can step out without you making guilt face" Ren hesitated. Shinso pointed at him.
"That hesitation is exactly why it is on the table" Ren exhaled.
"Yes. You can step out. I will report guilt face if present" Shinso seemed satisfied. Aizawa looked at Kurose.
"Write guilt face as nontechnical term" Kurose wrote. Ren looked betrayed. Daichi whispered "Useful category" Ren closed his eyes. The peer-anchor discussion ended with no final assignment. That was the point. Conditional discussion approved. Consent valid for planning only. Both students retained refusal. Staff would design a rotating support plan so Shinso would not become the only anchor.
Possible other supports: Iida for route discipline, Uraraka for emotional visibility and body-limit awareness, Yaoyorozu for sequence under uncertainty, staff check-ins for medical thresholds. Midoriya was listed carefully because his guilt could entangle with Ren's. Bakugo was not listed as peer anchor because everyone valued survival, though Aizawa noted his response to direct operational calls had improved. Bakugo would never be told the wording. Probably. At the end of the conference, Nezu summarized.
"Conditional yes remains open. Medical clearance pending. Guardian consent pending final conditions. Student consent framework strong. Peer-anchor discussion valid. Camp association unresolved but monitored" Hana looked at the monitor.
"What happens if the association gets worse?" Nezu's answer was immediate.
"Then the door narrows or closes" Ren felt it. A small twist. Not surprise. Reality. Daichi asked "And if he is angry?" Recovery Girl said "Then he is angry and home" Hana nodded.
"That I can live with" Ren looked at her. She looked back.
"I would rather you hate us from the couch than be brave in a forest after the warning got clearer" The sentence entered cleanly. No romance. No softness pretending danger was noble. Ren nodded.
"If it gets clearer, I report" Kurose said "Good" Shinso leaned back.
"If it gets clearer and he does not report, I report" Ren looked at him. Shinso shrugged.
"Conditional friendship" Hana said "Good" Daichi nodded.
"Load-bearing" Aizawa muttered "This family is becoming a curriculum" Kurose said "It has strong outcomes" Aizawa looked tired enough to accept defeat. After the conference, the rain had stopped. The campus smelled of wet concrete, grass, and the kind of air that made everything look cleaner without actually changing the structures underneath. Hana and Daichi walked ahead for a few steps with Kurose, discussing guardian contact channels.
Recovery Girl had taken Ren's latest pulse and declared him medically tolerable, which he chose not to interpret as affection. Aizawa had pulled Shinso aside for two sentences of private instruction that made Shinso grimace and nod. Ren stood near the entrance with his folder. Conditional yes remained open. Not safe. Not no. A room unlocked before the door. Shinso joined him.
"Well" Ren looked at him.
"Well""We are not assigned""No""We conditionally agreed to planning""Yes""That sounds like dating bureaucracy" Ren stared. Shinso looked horrified at his own sentence.
"No""Too late""Delete that from memory""Impossible""I will deny it""Expected" Shinso rubbed his face.
"I blame conference trauma" Ren almost smiled. Almost became actual. The expression reached his mouth before stopping. Shinso saw it.
"Do not""I said nothing""You were going to smile""I am allowed""Conditionally" Ren did smile then. Small. Real. Shinso looked away immediately.
"Awful" Hana called from near the gate.
"Boys. Food before becoming policy" Shinso groaned. Daichi opened Bentaro though the rain had stopped. Hana looked at him. Daichi said "Preventive readiness" Ren shook his head. Shinso whispered "Your father is the peer anchor for an umbrella""Bentaro has consented through continued function""That is not consent""Good catch" Shinso glared.
"Do not turn my ethics into umbrella law" They walked out together. At home that evening, Ren revised his notebook under no page limit for once because Kurose had cruelly allowed reflection after conference. He wrote: Conditional yes is not permission to ignore fear. Then: Conditional yes is not a debt owed to the future self who wanted the door. Then: A support role is not ownership. A peer anchor is not a handler. Food is not a contract. A chair is not a debt. He paused.
Then added: If my yes makes someone else less free, it is already becoming wrong. That line felt important. He marked it. Not underlined. Just a small dot beside it. Across the table, Shinso had stayed for dinner and then stayed for homework and then stayed because Hana had said the rain might return and Daichi had offered Bentaro with too much sincerity. He was writing his own conference reflection with the expression of someone extracting glass from a wound and labeling each shard. Ren did not ask.
After several minutes, Shinso turned the page. Ren read. I can say yes because I want to be there. I can say no because soup is not a contract. If I become someone's anchor, I still get to be a person standing on the floor. Ren looked up. Shinso stared at the page like it had offended him. Ren said "Good" Shinso did not object. That meant the day had been long. Hana passed behind them and placed fruit on the table.
"Good enough for tonight" Daichi's lamp flickered once in the corner. Held. Outside, the rain began again. Soft. Ordinary. Not warning. Not absolution. Just weather. Ren closed his notebook. The camp was still conditional. The threat was still unclear. The door had not opened. But his yes had conditions now. Locks. Handles. People on both sides. A way to close it if closing became the right answer. For tonight, that did not make him safe. It made him less alone inside the wanting. And that, too, was evidence.
