Chương 55: Professional Interest

Endeavor's request arrived with enough signatures to make it look harmless. That was the first warning. The second was that Kurose did not bring it to Ren during class, lunch, training, recovery check, or any other moment where there might be too many witnesses and not enough exits.
She waited until the end of the day, after Ren had completed his food log, after Shinso had left for movement training with Aizawa, after Recovery Girl had cleared Ren for normal walking but not for "any object, sentence, or professional opportunity likely to produce idiocy" That last category remained broad. Ren sat in Kurose's office with his bag at his feet and his right hand flat on his knee.
His left arm was no longer fully wrapped, but the burn scar and the new pale branching lines remained covered under a light sleeve because public visibility had not yet earned access. Kurose sat behind her desk. No tea. No casual paperwork. A folder rested between them. ENDEAVOR AGENCY — CONTROLLED CONTACT REQUEST Ren read the title once. Then again. His right index finger did not move. Good. Kurose watched him.
"Status""Yellow. Anger low. Curiosity moderate. Physical response absent. Scar heat absent. Wanting to read the folder despite knowing I will dislike it" Kurose nodded.
"Good report" Ren looked at her.
"The word continues""It has institutional momentum now""That is unfortunate""Yes" She opened the folder.
"The Endeavor Agency has requested a controlled professional conversation with you under U. A. oversight" Ren looked at the first page. The wording was perfect. Too perfect. No extreme-environment training request. No field persistence phrase. No high-stress survival observation. Those had been sanded down after U. A.'s response. The new version used safer words. Student development. Future eligibility. Professional pathway clarification. Agency misunderstanding prevention. Ren disliked all of them.
"What does he want?" Kurose leaned back.
"Officially, to clarify that his agency's inquiry was professional interest, not pressure. To avoid future miscommunication. To assess whether any future contact should remain categorically blocked or simply delayed""Unofficially?"
"To look at you" Ren appreciated the bluntness. It still made something cold move through his stomach.
"As a student?"
"As a possible future asset" Ren let the word sit. Asset. Clean enough to avoid sounding like tool. Dirty enough to mean it.
"Why allow it?" Kurose did not answer quickly. That helped.
"Because controlled contact may reduce uncontrolled pressure. Because Endeavor is the Number Two Hero and a categorical refusal without process could create more attention than we want. Because his agency will remain part of the professional landscape whether we like it or not. Because you are old enough to participate in deciding how adults are allowed to approach you. Because refusing all contact can become its own kind of cage" Ren looked down at the folder.
"And because I want to meet him""Yes" He hated that she had said it before he did. Kurose continued.
"Want is not consent by itself. But ignoring it would be dishonest" Ren looked at his right hand. No thread. No tension. He wanted to see Endeavor up close. He wanted to know what kind of adult looked at footage of a boy collapsing after a rescue and wrote compatibility. He wanted to hear the voice that had shaped Todoroki's refusal, Toya's absence without a name, Shoto's divided body, a family history Ren had no right to enter and had already begun seeing around the edges like heat behind a closed door.
He wanted to test whether Endeavor could look at him and see student before use. He wanted Endeavor to fail. That was less noble. He reported it anyway.
"I want to meet him partly to confirm the worst interpretation" Kurose's gaze sharpened.
"That is an important report""It makes my consent worse""It makes your consent informed. Not pure. Pure consent is rarely available around power" Ren looked up. Kurose's expression held no comfort. Good. Comfort would have made the room too soft.
"Conditions?" he asked She slid a page forward.
"U. A. conference room three. Present in room: you, Endeavor, me, Recovery Girl. Principal Nezu remote. Aizawa outside the room for security but not privy to classified medical or fragment protocol. Your parents have been informed and gave conditional approval only if you consent. No physical test. No Quirk discussion beyond approved public and provisional Scar Tissue language. No reference to fragments, anomalies, future knowledge, or classified threat associations. No training offer. No private agency contact.
Fifteen minutes maximum. Recovery Girl may end it medically. I may end it educationally or legally. Nezu may end it administratively. You may end it by saying stop" Ren read the list. Aizawa outside. Not inside. Good. He had begun to trust Aizawa. That did not mean Aizawa got every door.
"Does Endeavor know why Aizawa is outside?"
"Security and student welfare support""Does he know there is information Aizawa does not have?"
"No""Good" Kurose watched him.
"You understand that if a fragment occurs, you do not explain it""Yes""You use the coded status categories""Yes""Nothing specific in front of Endeavor""Yes""Nothing about Todoroki's family" Ren's mouth dried. Kurose's voice lowered.
"Akiyama" He looked at her.
"You have already had heat-associated reactions around Todoroki and Endeavor topics. If anything appears, it is contaminated information until reviewed" Ren repeated the protocol because she had made him memorize it after USJ.
"Fragments can be reported for safety. They cannot be shared for curiosity, leverage, or emotional control" Kurose nodded.
"Not every truth you see becomes yours to tell" Ren closed his eyes. The sentence had entered him badly the first time. It still had not settled.
"Yes""Do you consent to the meeting?" He opened his eyes. He thought of Todoroki's note. My father's interest is not my consent. He thought of All Might's note. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. He thought of Shinso's towel with no name, Izuku's yes, Aizawa's tape hallway, Recovery Girl's prohibited object list, Hana's food schedule, Daichi's practical threats against the Number Two Hero in non-metaphorical language. He thought of Endeavor's words on paper. Professional interest.
"Yes" Ren said "Controlled contact only" Kurose wrote it down. The meeting was scheduled for the next morning. Ren did not tell Shinso the full details. He told him enough. They stood near the 1-C window after final dismissal, the training grounds below wet from a light rain that had come and gone before anyone could name it.
"Endeavor meeting tomorrow" Shinso's posture changed. Not much. Enough.
"Controlled?"
"Yes""Kurose?"
"In room""Recovery Girl?"
"In room""Nezu?"
"Remote""Aizawa?"
"Outside" Shinso looked at him.
"Not inside?"
"Not cleared for all protocols" Shinso's eyes narrowed. He understood the shape without knowing the content.
"Good" Ren looked at him.
"You are not asking""I am performing personal growth against my will""Good" Shinso pointed at him.
"Don't" Ren almost smiled. Small. Safe. Shinso turned back to the window.
"Do you want to meet him?"
"Yes""Bad yes?"
"Complicated yes""Painfully?" Ren thought of Daichi's phrase. Painfully means yes.
"Yes" Shinso nodded.
"Do not let him make you feel chosen" Ren looked at him. The sentence was too precise. Shinso kept his eyes on the field.
"He seems like the kind of adult who turns being useful into a compliment" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes""Your body likes those" Ren did not answer. Shinso looked at him then. Not gentle. Not cruel. Accurate.
"Don't let it answer before you do" Ren breathed.
"Good sentence" Shinso grimaced.
"Your family is infecting me""Accepted""No" The next morning, Hana packed breakfast that was too large. This was not metaphorical. There were rice, eggs, miso soup, fruit, and a small container of sweet potatoes Ren had not asked for but apparently required because Endeavor's existence increased caloric necessity in Hana's private medical system. Daichi sat across from Ren at the kitchen table reading the consent copy. He had read it the night before. Twice.
Now he read it again because fatherhood apparently involved trying to intimidate paper through repetition. Hana placed more tea near Ren.
"You can still refuse""I know""Do you?" If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation. Ren looked at her. Mostly. That was not enough.
"Yes" Daichi lowered the paper.
"If at any point he speaks to you like equipment, you leave" Ren nodded.
"If at any point he speaks to you like a hero he intends to sharpen, you leave" Ren nodded again.
"If at any point you want to stay because he is saying something terrible but useful, you look at Kurose before answering" Ren paused. Daichi's eyes did not move. Ren said "That one was specific""Yes" Hana sat down.
"Because that is the dangerous one" Ren looked at both of them. They understood too much. Not the fragments. Not all the secrets. Enough.
"I will look at Kurose" Hana nodded.
"Good" The word was different at home. Still not easy. Better. Conference room three had been prepared like a legal trap. Plain table. Five chairs. Water pitcher. Medical monitor. Recording notice visible on the table. Consent forms present. One door to the main corridor, where Aizawa stood outside with the expression of a man who would rather be training, sleeping, or being hit by a villain than standing beside institutional politeness. Recovery Girl sat inside already.
Kurose stood near the table with her folder open. Nezu's screen waited dark. Ren arrived early. Of course. Kurose did not comment. Recovery Girl attached a small monitor to his wrist.
"Status""Pain one at rest. Shoulder three. Scar heat absent. Fatigue low. Emotional yellow. Curiosity high. Defensive anger controlled" Recovery Girl grunted.
"Better than most adults entering Endeavor meetings" Kurose looked toward the door.
"The room is recording for internal accountability. The recording will be restricted. Endeavor has agreed" Ren nodded.
"Does he know I can stop the meeting?"
"Yes""Does he believe it?" Kurose's mouth flattened.
"We will find out" Nezu appeared on the monitor.
"Good morning" Ren nodded.
"Principal" Nezu's eyes were bright.
"Remember, Akiyama. We are not here to win an argument" Ren looked at him.
"What are we here to do?"
"To establish what kind of door Endeavor believes he is using" That was very Nezu. Annoying. Useful. The door opened at exactly the scheduled minute. Endeavor entered without flame. That was the first surprise. He was still enormous. Broad shoulders. Red hair. Beard like banked fire. Hero uniform modified for a formal visit. The absence of active flames did not make him less imposing. It made the heat feel withheld rather than absent. Controlled. Professional. Dangerous in a quieter category.
His gaze moved once across the room. Kurose. Recovery Girl. Ren. Monitor. Recording notice. Door. Aizawa outside visible for half a second before the door closed. Endeavor understood the room quickly. He sat opposite Ren. Not at the head. Good sign or strategic compliance. Both. Kurose began.
"This is a controlled professional contact meeting. No training offer, physical assessment, Quirk provocation, or private contact is authorized. Akiyama may end the meeting at any time. Recovery Girl may end it for medical reasons. I may end it for welfare or educational reasons. Principal Nezu may end it administratively. Do you acknowledge these terms?" Endeavor's voice was lower in person than through broadcasts.
"I acknowledge" Kurose looked at Ren. Ren said "I acknowledge" Nezu said "Then begin" Endeavor's eyes settled on Ren. For a second, Ren understood why people followed top heroes into fire. Not because they were kind. Not because they were safe. Because certainty had gravity. Endeavor looked like someone who could point at disaster and make the disaster briefly consider retreat. Ren hated that he understood the appeal. Endeavor spoke first.
"Akiyama Ren. Thank you for agreeing to this meeting" Ren said "I agreed to controlled contact" Kurose's pen moved. Endeavor registered the correction.
"Controlled contact, then" Good. Or merely adaptive.
"I requested this meeting because my agency's initial inquiry appears to have caused concern" Ren looked at him.
"It described me in terms that sounded like equipment" Endeavor did not flinch.
"The wording was professional""Yes""And insufficient" That stopped Ren's prepared response. Endeavor continued.
"Your school's reply made that clear" Kurose's pen moved again. Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed, suspicious of growth in the wild. Ren said "Do you believe it was insufficient or inconvenient?" Endeavor looked at him for a long moment.
"Both" Honest. Annoying. Ren's fingers remained still. Endeavor leaned back slightly.
"I am not here to apologize in a way that pretends my interest vanished. It has not" Kurose said "Clarify interest" Endeavor did not look away from Ren.
"Your response during the Todoroki match demonstrated field judgment under pressure, movement under constraint, and an unusual physiological capacity to maintain function during structural hazard response. Those categories are professionally relevant" Ren listened. Every phrase was cleaner than before. Still sharp.
"You mean I moved after I should have stopped""In part""That is not automatically good""No" Endeavor's answer came too quickly to be performance only. He continued.
"Stopping is sometimes correct. Continuing is sometimes necessary. Hero work requires knowing the difference under conditions that punish hesitation" Aizawa might have said something like that with less heat. Recovery Girl did not object. Kurose did not either. Ren said "My Quirk is not cleared for hero work""I know""My body is not cleared for extreme stress""I know""Then what is professionally relevant right now?" Endeavor's gaze sharpened.
"Your judgment" Ren's mouth closed. Again, the unexpected angle. Endeavor continued.
"Power can be trained later if it proves safe. If it does not, the question becomes whether your tactical and rescue judgment can be developed without depending on it. Either way, the match contained relevant data" Relevant data. There it was. Ren felt anger. Not enough to spike.
"Data can still be a person""Yes" Endeavor's voice remained steady.
"A fact some agencies forget when students become impressive" Ren looked at him.
"Do you include yours?" Kurose's pen stopped for half a second. Recovery Girl smiled without humor. Endeavor's eyes hardened.
"Yes" Silence. The answer did not make him safe. It made him harder to dismiss. Ren disliked that. Endeavor said "My agency has produced results. It has also used a language that rewards output too easily. That is not a legal confession. It is a professional flaw" Kurose said "Noted" Endeavor looked at her.
"I assumed it would be" Ren studied him. This was not the man from simple nightmares. That would have been easier. This was worse. A man who could name some of his methods without surrendering them. A man whose self-critique did not necessarily mean change. A man who might see the edge of harm and call it a useful boundary marker rather than a reason to stop. Ren said "Todoroki objected" Endeavor's face changed very slightly.
"Yes""To your interest in me""Yes""Did that matter?" Endeavor's flame beard was absent, but heat seemed to gather in the silence anyway.
"Yes" Ren waited. Endeavor continued.
"Not enough to withdraw professional interest. Enough to change how I approached it" Ren's left forearm warmed under the sleeve. Mild. He reported because not reporting would be foolish.
"Scar heat mild" Recovery Girl checked the monitor.
"Stable" Endeavor's eyes moved to the sleeve. Only once. Then back to Ren's face. Good. Maybe. Ren said "If Todoroki's objection only changed the language, not the desire, did you understand the objection?" Endeavor's jaw tightened. Kurose said "Answer only within appropriate scope" Endeavor said "He believes I turn children into training outcomes" Ren felt the room sharpen. Recovery Girl's hand moved near the medical stop button. Nezu's ears angled forward. Ren asked "Does he believe wrong?"
Endeavor did not answer. That was an answer. The left forearm warmed again. More. Ren breathed. Endeavor's eyes remained on him.
"You are good at making adults choose between clean lies and ugly silence" Ren said "I learned from institutions" Kurose made a small sound that might have been approval if she were less professional. Endeavor's mouth tightened. Not a smile. Almost.
"You want U. A. to protect you from methods like mine" Ren looked at him.
"Yes""You also want what methods like mine promise" The room changed. Ren's pulse rose. Recovery Girl looked at the monitor. Endeavor continued, voice controlled.
"Strength under pressure. Competence in hostile conditions. The ability to remain functional when others fail. You dislike my wording because you understand its danger. You dislike it more because part of you wants the result" Ren's right hand pressed flat against his knee. No thread. No tension. Daichi's voice in memory. If at any point you want to stay because he is saying something terrible but useful, look at Kurose before answering. Ren looked at Kurose. She was already watching him.
"Status" she said Ren breathed.
"Yellow-high. Anger. Recognition. No activation. Scar heat mild left forearm. Desire to argue and desire to be understood" Kurose nodded.
"Continue only if you choose" Endeavor's gaze flicked to her, then back. Ren looked at Endeavor.
"That is what makes your methods dangerous" Endeavor did not ask what. Ren said it anyway.
"They do not only threaten. They offer" Endeavor's eyes narrowed.
"You think gentler methods do not?"
"I think harm becomes easier to sell when it produces visible results" Recovery Girl said "Accurate" Endeavor's attention moved to her for one second. Then back.
"You are not wrong" The admission did not feel like victory. It felt like stepping on a surface that held when Ren had expected collapse. Endeavor leaned forward.
"I will not train you without U. A. clearance, parental consent, medical clearance, and your consent. I will not contact you privately. I will not request extreme-environment observation again during your current restriction period. That is my professional statement" Kurose said "Recorded" Ren said "And personally?" Endeavor's eyes hardened.
"Personally, I think you will eventually seek pressure because safe progress will feel too slow" The sentence hit like a hand around the ribs. Ren hated him. For being right enough. Recovery Girl's voice snapped.
"Boundary" Ren breathed. In. Hold. Out.
"Stable" Kurose said "Akiyama" Ren lifted one hand. Not to stop her. To say he heard. He looked at Endeavor.
"You think that because you see pressure as truth serum" Endeavor's gaze sharpened.
"Pressure reveals""Pressure distorts""It does both" Ren hated that too. Endeavor said "A controlled furnace strengthens metal" The room went cold. No. Not cold. Hot. White walls. A room too bright. A child's hands clenched into fists. Red hair damp with sweat. Heat licking up arms too small to carry it. A voice, small and breaking with effort. Look. The image snapped sideways. Snow. A mountain slope. Blue-white flame against dark. A child screaming without sound.
Another child smaller, half-hidden near a doorway, watching a lesson become a warning before he had words for either. A woman's hands around a kettle. Steam. A name beginning and breaking. To— Then smoke. Ren's body went perfectly still. The room vanished for half a second. Not enough to collapse. Enough to contaminate everything. Recovery Girl's chair scraped. Kurose's voice cut through.
"Status" Ren's mouth was dry. Protocol. Not every truth. Not yours. No specifics. No names. No family. He forced the words into the shape they had prepared.
"Yellow-red. Category F. Heat-associated. Child. Not mine. No actionable public detail" Endeavor's eyes narrowed.
"Category F?" Kurose answered before Ren could breathe.
"Classified medical protocol" Endeavor looked from her to Ren.
"What happened?" Recovery Girl stood.
"This meeting is approaching a medical boundary" Ren's pulse hammered. Scar heat rose under the left sleeve, then spread in a thin line up the forearm. Not Scar Lattice. Not Scar Tension. Stress. Memory. Threat. Endeavor stared at him, and for the first time since entering, his professional control looked insufficient to explain what he had seen. Ren looked back. The wrong sentence rose. How many children did you call useful before they broke? It reached his teeth. He saw Kurose's face. Not every truth.
He swallowed it. The effort hurt more than saying it would have. Instead he said "Stop" Kurose closed the folder immediately.
"Meeting ended" Endeavor remained still. Recovery Girl moved between him and Ren with the calm violence of someone who had never needed fire to be dangerous.
"Do not speak" Endeavor did not. Nezu's voice from the monitor was light and absolute.
"Thank you, Endeavor. U. A. will provide any necessary follow-up through official channels" Endeavor's eyes stayed on Ren for one more second. Ren did not look away. Then Endeavor stood. He gave one brief nod. Not apology. Not concession. Acknowledgment.
"I will await formal communication" Kurose opened the door. Aizawa stood outside instantly alert, gaze moving from Ren to Endeavor to Recovery Girl. He did not ask. Good. Endeavor left. The door closed. Ren realized his right hand was shaking. Recovery Girl was already at his side.
"Breathe" He breathed. Badly. Again. Better. Kurose crouched beside him, not touching.
"Status""Yellow-red decreasing. Scar heat left forearm. No spread. No activation. Fragment contained. No public disclosure""Good" Ren closed his eyes. The word hurt. This time he deserved it and did not. Nezu spoke quietly.
"Akiyama, can you move to secure medical debrief?"
"Yes""Do you consent to debrief with Recovery Girl, Kurose, and myself?"
"Yes""All Might will receive restricted summary only if you consent after debrief" Ren opened his eyes.
"Yes. Later. Not full until I say""Accepted" Aizawa remained outside when they moved rooms. He saw Ren's face and understood enough to dislike his own ignorance. Ren saw the understanding and the boundary around it. Aizawa asked only "Medical?" Kurose answered "Controlled. Classified" Aizawa nodded once. No demand. No resentment visible. Good. Another door. Another lock. Secure medical room two was smaller than the conference room and safer because Endeavor had never been inside it.
Recovery Girl checked Ren's vitals, scar heat, pupils, breathing, pain, orientation, hydration, and whether he was attempting to convert distress into analysis faster than his body could survive. He was. She told him so. He stopped. Mostly. Kurose sat across from him with a classified notepad. Nezu watched from the monitor, expression no longer playful. The room waited. Ren drank water. It tasted metallic. Probably stress. Kurose said "When ready. Sensory first. Interpretation second.
No conclusions unless clearly marked" Ren nodded. This was protocol. This was why secrets had shape.
"Trigger phrase" he said "Controlled furnace strengthens metal" Recovery Girl's mouth tightened. Kurose wrote. Ren continued.
"Visual. White room. Heat. Training environment. Child with red hair. Young. Too young for output expected. Sweating. Hands burned or close to burned. He wanted to be watched" His throat tightened. He drank again.
"No name?" Ren closed his eyes.
"Partial. Beginning only. To. Then break. Smoke. Not enough to confirm" Nezu's ears lowered. Kurose's pen did not stop. Ren continued.
"Second visual. Snow. Mountain or outdoor cold environment. Blue-white flame. Same child or older version. Fire wrong color compared to Endeavor and Shoto. Body overwhelmed. No clear death image. Strong distress. Sound absent" Recovery Girl whispered something under her breath that did not become language. Ren looked at his hands.
"Third. Smaller child watching from doorway. Half white, half red. Likely Shoto. Not certain from image alone but context suggests. He was not center. He was witness" Kurose wrote more slowly. Ren's voice flattened because if it did not, it would break.
"Fourth. Woman's hands around kettle. Steam. Fear. No full face. Connected to household trauma. Existing known public rumor about Todoroki family insufficient to validate specifics. Treat as contaminated" Nezu nodded.
"Excellent distinction" Ren almost laughed. Did not. Kurose asked "Interpretation, marked as interpretation" Ren looked at her.
"Endeavor has done pressure-as-training with at least one child before Shoto. Possibly older sibling. Fire overuse or mismatch. Blue flame. Snow incident. The child wanted Endeavor to look at him. This may connect to absent family member. Not enough to disclose to Todoroki. Not actionable without external confirmation. High risk of emotional harm if misused" Recovery Girl looked away. Nezu's voice came carefully.
"Any villain association?" Ren's stomach turned. Blue flame. Hands. Smoke. A dark coat? No. Not clear. Do not reach.
"Not confirmed" Ren said "No current villain identity. No name D—" He stopped. The sound had come from somewhere too close to memory and too far from evidence. Kurose's eyes sharpened. Ren corrected.
"No confirmed name. No disclosure" Kurose wrote exactly that. Nezu said "Very good" Ren hated the word again. Recovery Girl said "That fragment is not yours to carry alone" Ren looked at her.
"But it is also not mine to hand over""No" Kurose's voice was quiet.
"Knowing where a wound is does not give you the right to press it" Ren nodded. The sentence entered beside all the others. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. Interest is not consent. Not every truth. Knowing where a wound is. The notebook inside him had become too crowded. Nezu folded his paws.
"We must decide immediate safety classification" Kurose answered before Ren could.
"Restricted. No disclosure to Todoroki at this time. No disclosure to Endeavor. No standard faculty disclosure. Aizawa receives only that the meeting caused a classified medical response and that Endeavor contact remains restricted. Parents receive welfare summary, no content unless Akiyama requests. Shinso receives no content" Ren looked up.
"No content to Shinso" Kurose watched him.
"Do you disagree?"
"No""Do you want to disagree?"
"Yes""Why?" Ren rubbed his right thumb against his index finger. No tension.
"He would notice I am holding something""Yes""He would not ask if I said classified""Yes""That makes me want to tell him more" Kurose nodded slowly.
"Because restraint from someone else can feel like permission to trust them with too much" Ren closed his eyes. Unfairly accurate.
"Yes""Then we do not use Shinso's respect as a reason to burden him" Ren breathed.
"Yes" Recovery Girl said "Parents?" Ren thought of Hana's face. Daichi's hands on the Endeavor consent paper.
"They should know the meeting triggered a classified fragment and that I am stable. Not content. Not yet" Kurose wrote.
"All Might?" Nezu asked Ren hesitated. All Might knew the family from outside. Knew Endeavor as colleague. Knew the public ranking. Knew symbols and damage. But this was Todoroki's family wound. Toya's wound, if the partial name meant what the reader would know and Ren could not.
"All Might gets restricted summary that Endeavor trigger produced family-related heat fragment with child harm themes. No details unless needed for safety" Nezu nodded.
"Accepted" Recovery Girl looked at Ren.
"And you?" Ren blinked.
"What about me?"
"What do you get?" He did not understand. She leaned closer.
"Everyone gets a protocol. What do you get after seeing a child burn in someone else's past?" The room went quiet. Ren stared at the table. No answer came. That was answer enough. Kurose wrote something on a separate page and slid it toward him. No analysis for two hours. Food. Parent pickup. No solitary notebook work. No contact with Todoroki today. No media. No training objects. No philosophical exertion after dinner. Ren read the list.
"Philosophical exertion is not measurable" Recovery Girl said "I know it when I see it" Nezu said "So does everyone who knows you" Ren closed his eyes.
"Hostile room""Protective room" Kurose corrected That was worse. Better. Both. Hana arrived thirty minutes later. Daichi with her. They had clearly been told enough to worry and not enough to understand, which was an ugly kindness. Hana entered first and crossed the room quickly but did not grab Ren. She stopped in front of him, eyes scanning face, posture, hands, sleeve, breathing.
"Status" Ren's throat tightened.
"Stable. Classified fragment. No full content today. Not hiding danger. Just not sharing contaminated material" Hana's face changed. Pain. Pride. Fear. All controlled badly enough to be human.
"Thank you for that sentence" Daichi stepped beside her.
"Endeavor?"
"Trigger, not contact harm" Daichi's jaw tightened.
"That is not nothing""No""Do we need to make a complaint?" Kurose said "Not at this stage. The meeting ended under Ren's stop request. Endeavor complied. Future contact remains restricted" Hana looked at Kurose.
"Complied is a low bar""Yes" Kurose said "It is also documentation" Daichi nodded once. He understood practical ugly things. Hana turned back to Ren.
"You are coming home" Recovery Girl said "Correct" Ren said "I have afternoon class" Every adult in the room looked at him. He stopped.
"Home is acceptable""Miracle" Recovery Girl muttered On the way out, Aizawa stood in the medical corridor. He looked at Ren once. Not asking. Ren said "Classified. Stable" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" The word from him did not pry. That helped. Shinso was waiting near the west gate. Not by accident. He leaned against the wall with his bag over one shoulder and an expression that dared anyone to accuse him of concern. Rain threatened but had not begun. The borrowed umbrella from the other night stuck out of his bag, returned and reborrowed in a category no one had officially named. Hana saw him. Daichi saw him.
Kurose had probably told them he might be there because the adult network was becoming indistinguishable from surveillance with snacks. Ren stopped in front of him. Shinso looked at his face. Then at Hana and Daichi. Then back.
"Classified?" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Stable?"
"Yes""Endeavor?"
"Meeting ended. Restricted further" Shinso's eyes narrowed.
"Did he do something?" Ren breathed.
"No. He said something true in a dangerous way" Shinso's face went still.
"Those are the worst ones""Yes" A pause. Then Shinso said "Do I need to know?" Ren looked at him. The answer hurt.
"No" Shinso's jaw tightened once. Then he nodded.
"Good" It was not easy. That made it matter. Hana's eyes softened. She said nothing. Daichi said "We are going home. There is food. This is information, not pressure" Shinso looked at him.
"That sentence is suspicious""Yes" Daichi said "But accurate" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren looked back. Shinso exhaled.
"Painfully yes" Daichi nodded as if that settled everything.
"Car is this way" They walked together. No one discussed the fragment. No one discussed Endeavor. No one discussed the way Ren's hands had started shaking only after the danger had passed. In the car, Hana placed a container of sweet potatoes in Ren's lap. Then handed another to Shinso. Shinso stared.
"I am not the one who met Endeavor" Hana said "Secondary exposure" Shinso looked at Ren.
"Your family diagnoses proximity" Ren held the warm container.
"Yes" At home, dinner was quiet. Not silent. Quiet. The difference mattered. Daichi discussed the umbrella currently known as Bentaro and whether a repaired handle improved or diminished its character. Hana said objects did not need adversity to gain value, which made Daichi accuse her of undermining the entire dramatic umbrella tradition. Shinso listened with the expression of someone learning that family arguments could be structurally absurd rather than strategically dangerous. Ren ate. He did not write.
He wanted to. He did not. After dinner, he sat by the window with tea cooling between his hands. His notebook was in his bag, zipped. That felt like restraint and amputation. Shinso sat on the floor near the couch, supposedly reading. He had not turned a page in eight minutes. Ren said "You are not asking loudly" Shinso did not look up.
"I am excelling""Yes""I hate it""Yes" Shinso turned one page without reading it. Then said "Is it about Todoroki?" Ren's fingers tightened around the cup. Hana looked up from the kitchen. Daichi stopped pretending not to listen. Ren answered carefully.
"Adjacent" Shinso's eyes lifted. That was more than he had expected. More than he needed. Not too much.
"Does he need to know?"
"Not now" Shinso nodded.
"Do you want to tell him?" Ren looked at the dark window. The reflection showed the room behind him. Hana. Daichi. Shinso. Food on the table. A notebook in a closed bag.
"Yes""Because it might help?"
"Because I want the burden to move" Shinso's face changed. Good. He understood that one.
"Then don't" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes" The room accepted the answer without making it clean. Later, after Shinso went home with the umbrella because rain had finally started and because Daichi insisted Bentaro needed field testing, Ren opened his notebook for the first time that night. He did not write the fragment. Not the child. Not the snow. Not the blue fire. Not the partial name. He wrote only: A furnace can be a promise or a threat. Then: Pressure reveals. Pressure distorts.
Then, after a long pause: Some truths become more dangerous when carried by the wrong witness. He closed the notebook. Outside, rain struck the glass. Inside, his left forearm cooled slowly under the sleeve. Somewhere in the city, Endeavor would continue being the Number Two Hero. Somewhere in U.
