Chương 70: Competency Threshold
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 124 chương · ~46 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
Ren had always liked written exams. Not because they were easy. Easy was irrelevant. Written exams had rules. Questions had borders. Answers could be checked against memory, logic, and preparation. A page did not suddenly decide to bleed. A formula did not ask whether his body was worthy. A grammar prompt did not become a villain with a knife and an ideology. A history question could be unfair, badly phrased, or annoyingly broad, but it did not look at him and ask how much pain he was willing to turn into proof.
Written exams were not safe. Nothing in U. A. was safe in the childish way. But they were contained. Ren respected contained things. Unfortunately, final exams at U. A. were not only written. Kurose wrote the week's schedule on the board with the calm brutality of a person placing weather events into boxes.
MONDAY — WRITTEN EXAM PREP TUESDAY — MIXED PRACTICAL PREP WEDNESDAY — WRITTEN REVIEW / RECOVERY CHECKS THURSDAY — PRACTICAL MOCK FRIDAY — INDIVIDUAL THRESHOLD CONFERENCES Under that, she wrote the worst phrase again. COMPETENCY THRESHOLD Sano stared at it.
"I object to words that sound calm while threatening me" Kurose capped the marker.
"Objection noted""Accepted?"
"No""Consistent" Arai copied the schedule neatly, then added small boxes beside each item. Kenta had already drawn a flowchart connecting written prep to practical constraints. Shinso leaned back in his chair with the expression of someone watching a trap being assembled in public. Ren copied the board. He did not underline competency threshold. He wanted to. That was a warning. Kurose turned toward the class.
"Final exams are approaching. Standard written exams will apply across courses. Practical examinations vary by course and track. Cross-Course Hero Candidate evaluation will include adapted practical elements, not teacher-combat exams" A small noise moved through the room. Relief from some. Disappointment from others. Ren felt both and disliked both for different reasons. Shinso raised his hand.
"Does adapted mean easier?" Kurose looked at him.
"No""Does it mean less humiliating?"
"No""Does it mean legally safer?"
"Yes""Then I will cling to that" Kurose pointed at the phrase on the board.
"Competency threshold means the exam evaluates whether you can perform specific skills under defined constraints at a level that supports continued candidacy. It is not a verdict on your worth. It is not a guarantee of transfer. It is not a moral ranking. It is not a measure of how badly you want it" Ren's pen stopped. Kurose did not look at him. That was kind. Possibly deliberate. Therefore annoying.
She continued "For Cross-Course candidates, the practical mock will assess five categories" She wrote them one by one. ROLE DISCIPLINE COMMUNICATION COMPRESSION SECOND ANSWERS SAFETY COMPLIANCE UNDER TRIGGER RECOVERY-INFORMED LIMITS Shinso read the list.
"It is always the second answer now""Yes""I miss when problems were other people" Sano whispered "Character development is theft" Arai whispered "Mostly from comfort" Sano looked offended.
"You too?"
"Especially me" Kurose tapped the first category.
"Role discipline. You do the job assigned by the scenario, not the job your fear or pride prefers" Tap.
"Communication compression. You give usable information in time for others to act" Tap.
"Second answer. When your first tool is blocked, unavailable, unsafe, unethical, or insufficient, you produce another response" Tap.
"Safety compliance under trigger. You follow restrictions even when the scenario activates a personal pressure point" Tap.
"Recovery-informed limits. You demonstrate that you know your current body, Quirk, stress response, and aftercare requirements well enough not to turn training into injury theater" The silence after that one belonged partly to Ren. Not entirely. Several students looked down. That helped and hurt. Kurose said "Questions" Sano's hand rose.
"Can I request different personal pressure points?"
"No""Can I request fewer?"
"No""Can I request snacks?"
"Yes" Sano slowly lowered his hand.
"I have been managed""Good" The word landed across the class with communal suffering. Ren almost smiled. Almost. Then Kurose turned to the next page on her clipboard.
"Teams for Tuesday prep" No one breathed correctly.
"Akiyama. Shinso. Uraraka. Yaoyorozu" Ren looked up. Shinso's eyes narrowed. Uraraka turned in her seat and gave a small wave. Yaoyorozu nodded with the focused expression of someone already building a strategy from the word threshold. Kurose continued "Midoriya. Iida. Todoroki. Arai" Arai's pen froze for exactly one second. Then resumed.
"Kenta. Sano. Kirishima. Tokoyami" Sano looked at Kenta.
"We have been paired with intensity and darkness" Kenta said "And ourselves""That may be worse" Kurose ignored him. The rest of the class received teams. Hero Course students would rotate in during selected prep blocks, not all. Aizawa had apparently approved this with the expression of a man agreeing to necessary inconvenience. At the end of homeroom, Kurose called Ren and Shinso to the desk. Ren stood. Shinso muttered "Every desk is a checkpoint" Kurose heard.
"Yes" Shinso looked tired. Ren stopped beside him.
"Status?" Kurose asked Ren answered first.
"Yellow. Exam anticipation. Hope. Fear. No heat" Shinso said "Yellow. Irritation. Hope I resent. No Quirk pressure" Kurose wrote both.
"Good. Your individual mock constraints are ready" She handed them each one sheet. Ren read his. AKIYAMA REN — PRACTICAL MOCK CONSTRAINTS No entry into red zones under any circumstance. No intentional Scar Tension activation. If Scar heat rises above mild, report and shift to communication-only unless medically cleared. Must provide at least three compressed actionable calls. Must refuse at least one unsafe opportunity to help physically. Must delegate one task rather than personally solve it.
The sixth line was the worst. Must delegate one task rather than personally solve it. Kurose watched him read. Ren breathed.
"Status update""Yellow-high. Line six trigger. No heat""Why?"
"Because delegation can feel like abandoning precision""Good identification" Ren disliked the accuracy. Shinso read his own sheet. SHINSO HITOSHI — PRACTICAL MOCK CONSTRAINTS Brainwashing use only under ethical trigger clearance. Must initiate physical movement before any Quirk opportunity appears. Must identify one moment where silence is not rejection. Must use capture weapon for positioning, not restraint. Must produce a second answer after verbal route fails. Must request assistance once without sarcasm.
Shinso stared at line six. Then looked at Kurose.
"This is targeted harassment""Yes""At least you admit it""Competency threshold""I hate this phrase more with every use" Ren glanced at the paper again. Must refuse at least one unsafe opportunity to help physically. That was not an exam. That was an ambush wearing structure. Kurose's voice lowered slightly.
"You both want doors. These are hinges" Shinso looked at her. Support the creativity of authors by visiting the original site for this novel and more.
"That was almost poetic""It was operational""Worse" Ren folded the sheet carefully. Hinges. Doors did not open by wanting the other side hard enough. They needed mechanisms. Ugly, small, load-bearing mechanisms. Like saying no. Like asking for help without sarcasm. Like delegating. Like stopping. Written exam prep began with the library. It should have been normal. It was not. U. A.' s library had always been too large for a school and too quiet for a building full of future disasters.
Tables had been reserved for mixed study groups, and a temporary schedule had been placed near the entrance to reduce conflict over space. Someone had taped a note beside it. QUIET IS NOT OPTIONAL Under it, in smaller handwriting: Bakugo, this includes aggressive page turning. Ren stared at the note. Shinso looked over his shoulder.
"Aizawa?"
"No. Too specific""Kirishima?"
"Too brave""Ashido?"
"Possibly" They found their assigned table. Uraraka was already there with notebooks, flashcards, and a snack bag. Yaoyorozu had three textbooks, color-coded tabs, a thermos, and a study plan so elegant it felt like architecture. Arai was at the next table with Midoriya, Iida, and Todoroki, explaining something about diagram layout while Midoriya looked as if he were learning that information design was a Quirk. Uraraka smiled when Ren and Shinso sat.
"I brought snacks because Kurose-sensei keeps making it sound like food is a study tool" Shinso looked at the snack bag.
"In this institution, food is surveillance" Yaoyorozu considered.
"Metabolic regulation does affect cognitive performance" Shinso pointed at her.
"You are making them stronger" She blinked.
"My apologies?" Ren sat.
"Too late" Uraraka laughed softly. The sound eased something around the table. Yaoyorozu opened her study plan.
"I thought we could begin with civics and hero law, since practical exams often test whether we understand legal responsibility under pressure" Shinso leaned back.
"I miss math" Ren looked at him.
"No you do not""No. But I miss the idea of math" Uraraka pulled out a flashcard.
"Question. During an emergency, under what conditions may an unlicensed student use their Quirk?" The table went quiet. Hosu sat down with them. Not invited. Still there. Yaoyorozu's hands stilled. Ren saw Uraraka realize the question's weight. She lowered the card slightly.
"We can skip""No" Shinso said Everyone looked at him. His face was unreadable.
"That is exactly why we cannot" Ren nodded. Uraraka swallowed and read the card again, more slowly.
"During an emergency, under what conditions may an unlicensed student use their Quirk?" Yaoyorozu answered first.
"Generally, unlicensed students may not use Quirks in public or combat contexts except under specific emergency conditions where immediate action is necessary to prevent serious harm, no licensed hero can intervene in time, and the action is proportionate" Iida, from the next table, said without looking up "And even then, legal consequences remain possible" The room paused. He had spoken into their table without meaning to. Or maybe meaning to. Ren looked at him. Iida kept his eyes on his book.
Midoriya's hand tightened around his pencil. Todoroki turned one page slowly. Uraraka nodded.
"Right" Shinso said "So the answer is not heroism removes consequences""No" Yaoyorozu said softly Ren wrote: Emergency action does not erase law. Law does not erase emergency. Good. Useful. Difficult. They studied for two hours. Ren answered quickly and accurately. That was expected. The danger came after accuracy, when other students began asking him to explain and his brain warmed with the familiar pleasure of being useful in a way that did not require bone, scar, or blood. At first, it was fine.
Then Uraraka asked about liability. Yaoyorozu asked about agency jurisdiction. Shinso asked about consent and verbal Quirk use. Ren explained. Again. Again. Again. The explanations sharpened. His notes spread. His voice became steadier. His body leaned forward. Kurose was not in the library. That did not mean no one was watching. Arai appeared beside the table like a quiet correction.
"Akiyama" Ren looked up. She held out one of Sano's green cards. SIGNAL: USEFULNESS SPIKE? Ren stared. Shinso leaned over. Then looked at Ren.
"She got you" Ren's face warmed. Not scar heat. Embarrassment. Yaoyorozu looked concerned.
"Did we over-ask?" Ren breathed.
"No. I over-provided" Uraraka bit her lip.
"Sorry" Ren shook his head.
"Do not apologize for using a resource. I need to notice when I turn resource into proof" Arai nodded.
"Good distinction" Shinso muttered "The cards are spreading" Arai placed another card on the table. SIGNAL: DELEGATE ONE ANSWER Ren closed his eyes. Line six had found him in the library. Of course. Uraraka looked at the card.
"Can I answer the next one?" Ren opened his eyes.
"Yes" Yaoyorozu smiled slightly.
"That counts as delegation" Ren looked at her.
"Do not sound pleased""I am pleased""Unfortunate" The next card asked about civic responsibility during disaster evacuations. Uraraka answered with references to rescue economics, family burden, and crowd flow. It was not Ren's answer. It was good. Different. Useful. He wrote that down too. Not mine can still be correct. Shinso looked at the sentence and snorted quietly.
"What?"
"That one hurt you visibly""Yes""Good" Ren glared. Shinso looked satisfied. At the next table, Midoriya had become caught in Arai's redesign of his notes. She had drawn boxes around what mattered, arrows only where sequence mattered, and crossed out three separate decorative explosions of information. Midoriya looked wounded.
"But the side notes might become relevant" Arai said "Then put them in a side index. Do not let possible relevance attack immediate retrieval" Todoroki looked at Midoriya's notebook.
"She is correct" Midoriya whispered "Everyone is correct today" Iida said "That is not new. You are simply hearing it" Midoriya looked betrayed. Ren almost smiled. Almost. The practical prep on Tuesday began in Gym Gamma again, but the white line had been removed. Ren noticed immediately. So did Shinso. They stood where it had been. The tape residue remained faintly visible under the lights. Shinso said "Ghost line" Ren nodded.
"Still informative" Aizawa walked past them.
"If you start philosophizing about adhesive residue, I will assign laps" They moved. Quickly. Kurose gathered the four-person team. Ren. Shinso. Uraraka. Yaoyorozu. This was not a combat team. That became obvious when Thirteen rolled in a scenario board and Cementoss adjusted the mock environment. The space had been arranged as a damaged civic center after a villain attack. Multiple civilians. One blocked exit. One unstable ceiling segment. One hostile interference marker. One media drone simulation.
Several zones marked unknown. A table of limited tools. No dramatic villain figure. Of course. The exam would not ask whether Ren could win a fight. It would ask whether he could keep a rescue from becoming about him. Terrible. Effective. Aizawa read the mock instructions.
"Objective. Extract three civilians and preserve exit path. Avoid escalation with hostile marker. Protect information privacy from media drone. Time limit eight minutes. Hidden scoring includes role discipline and unsafe opportunity refusal" Shinso looked at Ren.
"Hidden scoring sounds less hidden when announced" Kurose said "It is hidden in detail, not existence""Comforting""No" Yaoyorozu studied the tool table. Uraraka looked at the ceiling segment. Ren looked at the media drone simulation. A small black device on a track, camera lens blinking red. His stomach tightened. Camera is not consent. Sano's cards were not present. He missed them. Annoying. Aizawa said "Begin" The drone moved first. Not toward civilians. Toward the team. Ren's body wanted to track it.
Yaoyorozu spoke.
"I can create a privacy screen" Shinso said "Wait. If you use creation there, we lose tool flexibility" Uraraka said "Can I float existing panels?" Ren looked. Movable wall panels near the edge. Yes.
"Uraraka, float panel. Yaoyorozu, save creations. Shinso, move before speaking. Block drone path physically if needed" Shinso gave him a flat look.
"Subtle""Correct" Shinso moved. Good. Uraraka touched a loose panel and lightened it enough to shift into the drone's path. The camera lost line of sight. Privacy protected. Yaoyorozu moved to the tool table.
"We need a brace and a carry sheet""Two creations?" Ren asked"One creation, if combined" She smiled faintly.
"Sequence correction" Good. Ren stayed near the center blue zone. Not forward. Not yet. The first civilian dummy was easy. Too easy. Uraraka and Yaoyorozu moved it together. Shinso monitored the hostile marker. Ren called route changes.
"Left route blocked""Hold exit priority""Ceiling segment stable for now" Then the second civilian appeared partially under the unstable ceiling segment. Visible. Reachable. Red zone edge. Ren felt heat in his right palm. Mild. He opened his hand.
"Scar heat mild right palm. Visible rescue trigger. No activation" Recovery Girl, at the medical station, said "Logged" Yaoyorozu looked at him.
"Do you need shift?"
"Not yet" The hostile marker activated. A speaker crackled.
"Hey! You heroes! Look at me!" Shinso turned. Too fast. Aizawa's eyes narrowed. The marker had spoken. Brainwashing route available. Kurose said nothing. Authorization not given. Shinso's jaw tightened. He wanted it. Ren could see the want. First tool waiting like a door opening by itself. Shinso stepped instead. Physical movement first. He used a training pole from the tool pile to push a light barrier into the hostile marker's path, blocking line of approach without engaging verbally.
"Second answer before first permission" he said through his teeth Aizawa looked pleased in the least pleasant way possible. Uraraka called "Ceiling shifting!" Ren turned. The second civilian's leg was under a mock beam. Yaoyorozu could brace. Uraraka could reduce weight. Ren could see a direct handhold from where he stood if he crossed red. His palm heated. Moderate. Not mild. Report.
"Scar heat moderate. Unsafe opportunity to help physically present. Shifting to communication-only" The words cost more than they should have. Recovery Girl said "Good" Ren hated it. Kurose said "Continue" He forced his eyes off the reach point and onto the structure. Hold the void. Not the body.
"Yaoyorozu, brace from left support, not beam. Uraraka, reduce load after brace, not before. Shinso, maintain marker block, then prepare carry route" Yaoyorozu moved. Uraraka waited. Waiting looked painful on her too. Good. Not alone. The brace held. Uraraka released the weight. Yaoyorozu pulled the dummy clear. Ren's palm cooled by one degree. Then the drone shifted around the panel. The camera lens found the second civilian. Privacy failure. Ren turned toward it. He could grab the panel if he moved three steps.
Not red. Safe. Useful. But if he moved, he would leave the communication point and lose view of the ceiling segment. Delegate. He hated the word.
"Shinso, drone" Shinso looked from hostile marker to drone.
"I have marker""Uraraka can take marker line with panel after extraction. You take drone. Yaoyorozu coordinate carry" Ren's voice stayed steady. Mostly. Shinso moved. Uraraka shifted panel position, blocking the hostile marker's path while keeping civilian line covered. Shinso cut across the floor and physically blocked the drone track with his body, then angled the privacy panel back into place. The third civilian dummy triggered with a sound effect near the exit. Because of course.
Aizawa's voice came through the speaker.
"Civilian distress. Exit path obstruction worsening" Ren saw the trap. If they chased the third civilian first, they would abandon the two already extracted. If they removed all three through the same exit, the ceiling segment might drop. If Yaoyorozu created another support, she would exceed planned resource use but not necessarily fail. If Uraraka floated too much, she would risk nausea. If Shinso left the drone, privacy failed. One useful sentence.
"Exit before third contact. Preserve route or all rescues become trapped" Uraraka flinched. The visible dummy near the exit was calling through the speaker.
"Help me!" It was fake. The body did not care. Uraraka's hands curled.
"I want to go" Ren said "I know" Her eyes stayed on the dummy.
"It feels awful""Yes" Yaoyorozu said "Exit route first" Uraraka breathed. Then nodded.
"Exit route first" They cleared the obstruction together. Then extracted the third. Time ended with twelve seconds left. Aizawa called "End" Ren's palm cooled all at once. He sat before anyone told him to. Recovery Girl looked almost impressed. Almost. Kurose approached with the score sheet.
"Team debrief. Akiyama" Ren answered before the tremor started.
"Role held. Communication-only shift after moderate heat. Unsafe physical opportunity refused. Delegated drone response to Shinso. Delegated third civilian delay to team. Discomfort high. No activation" Kurose nodded.
"Good""Do not say it like that yet" She paused. Then said "Accurate" Better.
"Shinso" Shinso rolled his shoulders.
"Moved before Quirk permission. Did not answer hostile marker verbally. Blocked physically. Took drone when delegated. Asked no assistance because no prompt" Kurose looked at him.
"Did you need assistance?" He grimaced.
"Yes""Then?" Shinso closed his eyes briefly.
"Yaoyorozu, I needed earlier route information before moving to drone" Yaoyorozu nodded.
"I should have called it" Kurose wrote.
"Late request identified. Partial credit" Shinso muttered "Merciful bureaucracy""Uraraka" Uraraka exhaled.
"I waited twice when waiting felt cruel. I used gradual release. I almost moved to third civilian before exit route. Corrected after call""Yaoyorozu""I preserved creation resources by combining tools. I overfocused on structure once and undercalled route information for Shinso. Corrected after prompt" Kurose looked at all four.
"That is a pass-level mock" The words hit Ren harder than expected. Pass-level. Not perfect. Not heroic. Pass-level. Competency threshold. His chest tightened. Kurose saw.
"Status""Yellow-high. Relief and disappointment conflict. No heat""Why disappointment?"
"Because part of me wanted a higher category""Say the category" Ren looked at the mock ceiling.
"Exceptional" Kurose nodded.
"And why?" He hated this. He needed it.
"Because pass-level feels too close to being allowed to continue by minimum tolerance" Uraraka's face softened. Shinso looked down. Yaoyorozu looked at him with sharp understanding. Aizawa spoke from the side.
"Minimum tolerance is not what threshold means" Ren looked at him. Aizawa continued "A bridge does not fail because it meets the load requirement instead of impressing the engineer" Ren blinked. Kurose wrote that down. So did Yaoyorozu. Shinso whispered "Aizawa-sensei made infrastructure emotional" Uraraka whispered "It helped" Ren stared at the mock environment. A bridge that met the load requirement did its job. It did not need to suffer aesthetically. Annoying. Useful.
Aizawa looked away as if he had not said anything important.
"Do not make me repeat that" No one dared. The rest of the prep block passed in rotations. Other teams failed, adjusted, tried again. Midoriya had to be told that low-output rescue did not mean apologizing to every object he did not lift. Iida had to practice stopping without making the stop look like punishment. Todoroki had to create heat small enough to comfort a civilian dummy without melting the sensor tag, which he accomplished on the third try while looking personally offended by gentleness.
Bakugo had to practice telling Kirishima to brace left without calling him a rock idiot, and on the second attempt managed "left brace" like the words had cost him money. At the end, everyone looked tired in the useful way. Not broken. Loaded. After school, Ren had his threshold conference early because Recovery Girl wanted medical data before Wednesday's written review. The room included Kurose, Recovery Girl, and Aizawa. Nezu attended by monitor for the last ten minutes.
All Might was absent, likely because Midoriya had his own post-Hosu control review and adult disappointment had scheduling conflicts. Kurose placed the mock sheet before Ren.
"Result. Pass-level mock. Not final. Strengths. Compression, trigger report, role discipline after correction, team routing, refusal of unsafe physical opportunity. Weaknesses. Emotional response to threshold category, tendency to equate pass with barely acceptable, high discomfort during delegation, mild delay before communication-only shift" Ren looked at the sheet. Not perfect. Pass-level. The body wanted to turn the page into a challenge. Again. Again until exceptional. Again until undeniable.
Recovery Girl tapped the desk.
"Report what your face is doing" Ren exhaled.
"Wanting retest. Wanting to make pass-level into failure pressure. No heat" Aizawa nodded.
"Expected""Comforting""It was not meant to be" Kurose said "Your assignment before final practical is not to raise the mock score" Ren looked up.
"What?"
"Your assignment is to maintain pass-level without escalation" That was worse. Recovery Girl smiled. Cruelly.
"Beautiful, boring medicine" Ren closed his eyes. Aizawa said "If you cannot accept competent, exceptional will kill you eventually" The sentence entered like a thrown knife that had no intention of missing. Ren did not answer immediately. Kurose waited. Recovery Girl waited. Aizawa waited with the patience of a man who had slept through worse feelings. Ren finally said "Competent feels temporary" Kurose's voice softened.
"Everything is temporary if you treat it as something you have to re-earn every second" He looked at the score sheet. Pass-level mock. Bridge load requirement met. Not collapse. Not brilliance. Function. Ren said "I do not know how to trust a threshold" Aizawa answered "Then practice standing on one" That became the assignment. Of course it did. Threshold practice. Ren was to complete written exam prep without overextending explanations.
He was to run one more mock only if medically indicated, not because pride demanded it. He was to accept pass-level feedback without converting it into a secret punishment. He was to sleep. Sleep remained annoyingly present in every serious plan. Nezu joined near the end. His face on the monitor looked pleased in a way that made Ren suspicious.
"I hear the bridge metaphor has been useful" Aizawa looked at the screen.
"No" Kurose said "Yes" Recovery Girl said "Unfortunately" Nezu's ears lifted.
"Excellent" Ren looked at all of them.
"You are enjoying structure too much" Nezu smiled.
"Structure is civilization's most polite trap for chaos" Aizawa muttered "Do not encourage him" Kurose closed the folder.
"Final point. The camp association remains under review. No further discussion until after final exams unless a fragment activates" Ren nodded.
"Understood""Status?"
"Yellow. Exam focus. Camp contained. No heat""Good" This time, the word felt almost bearable. Almost. At dinner, Ren explained pass-level to Hana and Daichi. Hana listened without interrupting. Daichi listened with the grave attention of a man hearing about bridge load requirements and taking them personally. Shinso arrived halfway through because Aizawa had apparently destroyed his arms again and Hana had declared that training injuries counted as soup-adjacent. Ren finished explaining. Then waited.
Hana said "Pass-level sounds excellent" Ren looked pained.
"It means threshold""Yes""Not exceptional""Good" He stared at her. She placed rice in his bowl.
"Exceptional is not dinner. Threshold is dinner. Dinner means you reached the table" Daichi nodded.
"Load-bearing" Shinso pointed his spoon at Ren.
"A bridge does not need to impress the engineer" Ren looked at him.
"You heard?"
"Kurose sent Aizawa's sentence to my threshold sheet as psychological contamination" Daichi leaned forward.
"That is a good sentence" Shinso sighed.
"It is everywhere now" Hana looked at Ren.
"Can you stand on pass-level for tonight?" Ren considered. Not forever. Not even confidently. But tonight? Maybe.
"Yes""Painfully?"
"Yes""Good" The word stayed. Not comfortable. Stable. After dinner, Ren opened his notebook. He wrote: Competency threshold. Then: A bridge does not fail because it meets the load requirement instead of impressing the engineer. Then: My assignment is not to become exceptional before I am allowed to continue. He paused. That sentence hurt. He wrote the next one anyway. My assignment is to trust competent long enough to stand on it. He read it twice. Then added: Pass-level is not barely alive.
Then: Pass-level is alive enough to continue on purpose. The final line surprised him. He did not cross it out. Across the table, Shinso worked on his own threshold reflection and looked as if line six had personally attacked his family. Ren asked "Without sarcasm?" Shinso did not look up.
"I would rather face Stain" Ren's face changed. Shinso went still. Then slowly lowered his pen.
"Bad comparison" Ren breathed.
"Yes" Shinso closed his eyes.
"Sorry" Ren looked at him. The apology had no sarcasm. Line six had found him too.
"Accepted for this instance" Shinso opened one eye.
"You are quoting yourself now""Yes""Terrible sign""Probably" They returned to writing. Outside, final exams approached with all the quiet violence of a calendar. Written questions waited. Practical thresholds waited. The possibility of camp waited behind them, sealed in a folder with the word conditional doing too much work. Ren's scars remained cool. His score sheet remained pass-level. His body remained seated at a table with food, family, Shinso, and a lamp that flickered only once before holding steady.
Competent. Not perfect. Not permanent. Enough to stand on tonight. For once, Ren let enough remain enough until morning.
