Chương 65: What Survives the Name

The official version arrived before the honest one. That was normal. Ren had begun to distrust normal. U. A. gathered the first-year Hero Course in one room, selected involved staff in another, and students with relevant cross-course protocols in smaller rooms that had too many chairs and not enough air. Class 1-C received a reduced summary through Kurose. Ren received a restricted summary through Kurose, Recovery Girl, and Nezu. The public received something else entirely. Endeavor had defeated the Hero Killer.
That was the headline shape. Not a complete lie. Not a complete truth. The most durable public stories rarely were. Ren sat in Kurose's office with his hands flat on his knees while the official news clip remained paused on the tablet in front of him. He had not watched the footage. He had read the approved transcript and the legal summary. That was already more than enough. The Hosu police chief had reprimanded Midoriya, Todoroki, and Iida for unauthorized Quirk use and unsupervised engagement.
Because exposing the students' involvement would create legal and media consequences damaging enough to swallow the rescue itself, official credit would remain with Endeavor and other pro heroes. The students would receive internal disciplinary and welfare consequences. Their injuries would be recorded. Their misconduct would be recorded. Their survival would be recorded. Recorded. Always recorded. Kurose sat across from him. Recovery Girl stood near the wall with her arms folded. Nezu watched from the monitor.
All Might was not present. This was not a Symbol matter yet. Or maybe it was too much of one. Ren looked at the line again. Endeavor credited publicly. He thought of Todoroki's fire in a narrow alley, small and controlled. Midoriya moving without breaking as much as fear demanded. Iida pulling back from revenge late enough to bleed and early enough to live. Native surviving. Stain falling. Endeavor in the headline. Ren said "That will hurt them" Kurose nodded.
"Yes""Especially Iida""Yes" Recovery Girl said "It may also protect him" Ren looked at her. She did not soften.
"Both can be true" Of course. Always both. Nezu folded his paws.
"The public version avoids turning three first-year students into either villains, vigilantes, or miracle children. It is not justice. It is containment" Ren looked at the tablet.
"Containment is ugly" Kurose said "So is exposure" Ren breathed. His left forearm remained cool. No scar heat. The body apparently understood legal compromise less than falling ice.
"Does Iida know?"
"Yes""Midoriya?"
"Yes""Todoroki?"
"Yes""Endeavor?" Kurose's mouth tightened.
"Yes" Ren nodded. Endeavor would accept credit because the system had offered it and because refusing it might expose the students. That did not make the credit clean. It also did not make it useless. Good and insufficient. Another sentence that had become structural. Ren looked at the next page. Student contact restrictions. No media. No public commentary. No independent discussion of Stain with outside parties. Medical review. Counseling required. Internship reevaluation.
Iida: enhanced welfare monitoring, family coordination, supervised reflection, temporary restriction from independent field exercises. Midoriya: medical review, control training review, communication protocol violation review. Todoroki: medical review, agency boundary review, father-contact monitoring. Ren: exposure limitation, ideological contamination monitoring, no unsupervised Stain research. Ren looked up.
"I was not there" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"Do you want to test whether I can hear guilt before it finishes dressing?" Ren shut his mouth. Kurose said "You were involved through protocol. That involvement has consequences""I did not break rules in Hosu""No. You followed them here""Then why does this feel like punishment?" Nezu answered gently.
"Because consequences are not always punishment" Ren hated that answer. He wrote it down. Kurose watched him.
"What survives the official version?" Ren looked at her.
"The record""What else?" He thought of Iida's message. I heard it.
"The private truth""What else?" Ren looked at the tablet. Endeavor credited publicly. Students restricted privately. Stain's words spreading everywhere. Hero society pretending control because control looked better than fear. He said "The ideology" Nezu's eyes sharpened.
"Yes" Recovery Girl said "And?" Ren hesitated. Then looked down at his hands.
"The wound" No one corrected him. That was worse. The first time Ren saw Iida after Hosu, Iida was sitting. That mattered. In memory, Iida always stood too straight, moved too precisely, bowed too correctly, ran too fast. Sitting made him look younger. The U. A. infirmary did that to people. So did bandages. So did the aftermath of almost becoming someone you would not survive being. This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
Iida sat on the edge of a medical bed with his left arm wrapped, one leg braced, and his glasses folded carefully on the small table beside him. Without them, his eyes looked less guarded and more exhausted. Midoriya sat in a chair nearby, shoulder bandaged, fingers wrapped but not casted. He looked like a person trying not to apologize to every object in the room. Todoroki leaned against the far wall with his injured arm bandaged and his expression arranged into quiet. His left sleeve had been replaced.
The new fabric looked too clean. Recovery Girl had allowed Ren to enter only after a full status check, a food confirmation, and a warning that if anyone tried to turn the room into a courtroom she would remove the judge, jury, defendant, witnesses, and furniture. Kurose stood beside the door. Aizawa stood outside. Not inside. Ren noticed the boundary and appreciated it. Iida looked up when Ren entered.
His hand twitched toward his glasses, then stopped because reaching for armor without wearing it was apparently not worth the effort.
"Akiyama""Iida" Silence. Midoriya looked between them. Todoroki did not move. Iida's voice was rough.
"You warned me" Ren said "Not enough" Iida's mouth tightened.
"I did not listen enough""That is not the same sentence" Iida closed his eyes.
"No" Midoriya's shoulders lowered slightly, as if the correction had landed somewhere he needed it too. Ren took the chair Recovery Girl pointed at. Sitting. Good. No one needed another standing boy trying to become structure. Iida opened his eyes again.
"I chose Hosu because I wanted to find him" The sentence made the room still. No polished version. No civic duty. No agency language. No professional development. Just the wound speaking plainly after the blade had failed to make it noble. Kurose's expression did not change, but her hand moved once on the clipboard. Iida continued "I told myself proximity to my brother mattered. That was true. I told myself Manual was a legitimate agency. That was true. I told myself I would not act alone.
That was false" His hands shook. He looked at them as if they belonged to someone else.
"I wanted the Hero Killer to look at me and know whose brother I was" Midoriya made a small sound. Not interruption. Pain. Iida looked at him.
"I am sorry" Midoriya opened his mouth. Iida lifted one hand.
"Please let me finish" Midoriya closed his mouth. Good. Painful. Good. Iida looked down.
"I wanted to be my brother's justice. I forgot Native. I forgot Manual. I forgot that my brother's name meant rescue before it meant injury. I forgot until it was almost too late" His voice trembled. Then steadied.
"Akiyama's sentence reached me" Ren's throat tightened.
"If his name sounds like an order, stop" Iida looked at him.
"I heard it late" Ren said "Late is different from never" Todoroki's eyes shifted. He recognized his own words from the alley. Iida nodded.
"Todoroki said that too" Todoroki looked away.
"It was true" Midoriya's hands twisted in his lap.
"Iida, I should have""No" Iida's voice cracked hard enough that Midoriya stopped. Iida breathed.
"No. You came for me. You sent your location. You were reckless. You were also the first reason I remembered that I was not alone. I can be grateful and still say you were reckless" Midoriya blinked. Then nodded too quickly.
"Yes" Recovery Girl, from the corner, said "Progress. Horrible progress, but progress" Midoriya flushed. Todoroki's mouth almost moved. Iida turned to Todoroki.
"You came too" Todoroki said "Midoriya texted badly" Iida stared. Midoriya looked wounded. Ren almost smiled. Almost. Todoroki continued "But enough" Iida looked down.
"Thank you" Todoroki nodded once.
"I understood the shape" Iida looked at him.
"Revenge?"
"Family pain becoming direction" The room changed. Iida did not ask. Good. Some doors remained owned. Ren watched Todoroki's left hand relax by one degree. Iida's eyes returned to Ren.
"What do I do now?" The question was too large for a student. That was probably why he asked a student. Adults would give structure. Students could sometimes give a sentence. Ren thought carefully.
"You stop trying to make one action pay the whole debt" Iida's breath caught. Ren continued "You cannot repair Ingenium with punishment. Not yours. Not Stain's. Not anyone's" Iida's eyes shone.
"My brother may never run again""I know""He was Ingenium""No" Iida went still. Ren's heart kicked once. This could go wrong. Probably necessary. Ren said "He is Tensei Iida. He carried Ingenium. The name matters. But if the name only survives when his engines work, then Stain damaged more than his body" Iida stared. Midoriya's eyes widened. Todoroki looked toward the floor. Iida's mouth trembled. Then he bowed his head. For a second, Ren thought he had pushed too hard. Then Iida whispered "Yes" The word broke.
Not badly. Cleanly enough to bleed. Recovery Girl did not interrupt. Kurose did not either. Iida lifted one shaking hand to his face.
"My brother told me once that a hero name was a route people used to find help" His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I made it a weapon" Ren's chest hurt. Todoroki said softly "You stopped" Iida shook his head.
"After I struck with it""Yes" Todoroki said "After" Not forgiveness. Sequence. It helped because it did not pretend. Midoriya leaned forward.
"What survives the name?" Everyone looked at him. He looked startled by his own question. Then flushed.
"I mean. If Ingenium is not only speed or injury or revenge. What survives?" Iida looked at his folded glasses. No one answered for him. That mattered. Finally, he said "A route" He swallowed.
"People finding help" Ren nodded.
"Then start there" Iida looked up.
"How?" Kurose answered this time.
"With boring things" Iida blinked. Recovery Girl nodded.
"Excellent place to start" Kurose continued "Welfare check-ins. Letters to your brother that are not apologies disguised as self-punishment. Manual's statement. Disciplinary reflection. Physical therapy attendance if your family permits involvement. No solo research on Stain. No hero name decisions while actively bleeding from the old one" Iida stared.
"That is""Boring" Kurose said Recovery Girl added "Therefore survivable" Midoriya whispered "I hate how often that is true" Ren said "Yes" The room breathed again. Not easily. Enough. When Ren left the infirmary, Todoroki followed him into the hall. Kurose looked at Ren. Ren reported before she asked.
"Yellow. Stable. No heat. Todoroki likely wants adjacent conversation. Public hallway acceptable" Todoroki blinked. Kurose said "Five minutes. Hallway. No classified material" Todoroki looked like he wanted to ask what counted as classified and had enough sense not to. They stood near the window that faced the courtyard. Students moved below them, carrying normal school objects through a school that had become less normal again. Todoroki spoke first.
"Stain mentioned my father" Ren nodded.
"In the alley?"
"Yes. He said my stance carried him" Ren watched Todoroki's reflection in the glass.
"Did it?" Todoroki's face did not change.
"Yes" Honest. Good. Bad. Todoroki continued "I did not answer""Good""I wanted to""Yes""He used true things""Yes" Todoroki's left hand flexed.
"That makes it worse""Yes" The silence that followed was not empty. Todoroki said "My father received public credit""Yes""He fought the Nomu. He helped the city""Yes""He is still him""Yes" Todoroki looked at him.
"You are becoming very repetitive""Some truths are structurally repetitive" Todoroki stared. Then looked away.
"Unfortunately" Ren almost smiled. Todoroki's voice lowered.
"I am angry that his credit protects us" Ren understood that too well.
"Yes""I am angry that I needed it""Yes""I am angry that it was useful" Ren looked out the window.
"Good and insufficient" Todoroki's mouth tightened.
"All Might?"
"Yes""Annoying""Useful" Todoroki breathed out through his nose.
"Both" Below, a group of Hero Course students crossed the courtyard. Some looked up. None stopped. Todoroki said "I called Fuyumi last night" Ren stayed still. Not classified. His door.
"She asked if I was hurt. I said yes. Then she asked if I meant body or other" Ren did not answer. Todoroki continued "I did not know sisters could make questions worse by being accurate""Hana can" Todoroki looked at him.
"Your mother is frightening""Yes""Good" Ren looked at him.
"The word reached you too""It appears so" For a moment, they stood there without trying to fix anything. Then Todoroki said "Iida's brother is more than his name""Yes""So is mine" Ren's breath paused. The hallway seemed to narrow. Todoroki did not look at him. He looked out the window.
"I am not asking you anything" Ren swallowed.
"Good""I am telling myself""Yes" The door was his. The old one. The new one. The one Ren had no right to open. Todoroki stepped away first.
"Five minutes" Ren nodded.
"Stable" Todoroki left. Ren stayed by the window until Kurose appeared.
"You seem to be attracting controlled hallway conversations""I am considering filing a complaint""Denied""Expected" She glanced after Todoroki.
"Status?"
"Yellow. No heat. He did not ask. He told himself something""Good" Ren did not protest. Progress. Maybe. The school day did not end so much as dissolve into aftercare. Midoriya was pulled into All Might and Recovery Girl's combined disappointment field, which was reportedly severe enough that even Gran Torino seemed satisfied to let it happen. Todoroki had agency follow-up and a scheduled welfare call with his family. Iida had disciplinary reflection, family contact, and medical rest.
Class 1-C had ideology homework. Kurose did not believe in wasted crises. The assignment read: What survives a public narrative that is incomplete but protective? Ren stared at the prompt for several minutes after returning to class. Then wrote: What survives depends on who maintains the private record. He paused. Then continued: A public lie can protect a person and still wound them. A private truth can repair a person and still become another weapon if handled badly.
The official version says Endeavor defeated Stain. The private record says three students survived an error, a rescue, a fight, and consequences. Both versions affect what happens next. He stopped. Too academic. He added: Do not confuse being protected with being clean. Better. Sano, beside him, looked at his own page with a grim expression. Ren did not ask. Sano slid the paper over anyway.
It said: If the story says someone else saved you, the people who know the real version have to make sure you do not disappear inside the safer lie. Ren read it twice. Then looked at Sano. Sano's face flushed.
"I can make it less dramatic""No" Kurose, passing behind them, looked down at the page.
"Do not" Sano covered his face.
"I am professionally perceived again" Arai leaned over from the next desk.
"You are improving""That is worse" Kenta placed his own page down. His answer was shorter. A name survives when people still use it to find help, not proof. Ren stared. Kenta looked embarrassed.
"What?"
"Nothing" Shinso, from the other side, muttered "General Studies is becoming unbearable" Kurose said "Good" The class groaned as one. The word had become communal damage. That evening, Ren received permission to send Iida one message. One. Not a thread. Not analysis. Not emotional triage disguised as friendship. One message. He wrote three different versions and deleted all of them. The first was too instructive. The second too soft. The third sounded like Kurose wearing his hands.
Finally, he sent: A route can be repaired one step at a time. No reply came for almost an hour. Then: I will try to begin with one. Ren placed the phone down. Hana saw his face from the kitchen.
"Good?" Ren thought about it.
"Yes""Painfully?"
"Yes" Daichi looked over from the table.
"The useful kind?"
"Maybe" Shinso, who was at the table again because his ability to pretend he was not becoming part of the dinner pattern had collapsed under repeated evidence, looked up from his homework.
"Maybe is an advanced category" Ren sat. The table held food, worksheets, a repaired umbrella, one half-dismantled lamp Daichi had sworn he could fix, and the strange quiet of a house that had made room for too many kinds of aftermath. Hana placed soup before Ren.
"Eat before thinking about public narratives" Shinso looked at his bowl.
"Does this apply to guests?"
"You are past guest status for soup" Shinso froze. Daichi looked at him with deep sympathy.
"Dangerous threshold" Ren watched Shinso process the sentence like a person confronted with a trap that smelled like miso. He finally said "I object and accept" Hana nodded.
"Good" Shinso whispered "No" Ren almost smiled. Safe. Small. Later, under approved notebook conditions, Ren opened to a fresh page. He wrote: What survives the name? Then listed: Ingenium — route to help. Not revenge. Deku — chosen wound, maybe. Not punishment. Shoto — his. Not Endeavor's. Responder — answer is not command. Anchor — stable point. Not prison. Scar Tissue — record. Not identity. Stain — warning. Not judge. He looked at the list. It was not complete. No list was. He added one more line.
A name survives correctly only if it does not require someone to keep bleeding for it. He stopped. Too clean. But true enough for tonight. He closed the notebook. Outside, the world kept deciding what Hosu meant. News stations talked. Forums argued. Heroes defended. Villains listened. Students healed. Adults filed reports. Families sat beside hospital beds and learned what names could no longer do by themselves. Inside, Ren placed his Anchor card back between All Might's note and Todoroki's sentence. Heroic.
Too expensive. Not a model. My father's interest is not my consent. Anchor. Then, beneath them, he placed a new scrap of paper. I am not his argument. The four pieces did not make a shield. Not yet. Maybe they never would. Maybe they were not supposed to. Maybe they were only anchor points, small places where a person could tie the next decision before the storm tried to rename it. Ren turned off the light. For once, the dark did not ask him to prove anything. That was enough. For tonight.
