Chương 74: Before the Door Opens

Practical exam day arrived without asking whether anyone was ready. Ren considered that rude. U. A. considered it scheduling. The morning air over campus felt too clean for the amount of dread moving through it. Students crossed the walkways in clusters that pretended to be casual and failed in different styles. Hero Course students had the strained look of people who had already been told their exam pairings and were now trying not to think about which teacher had been assigned to dismantle them.
General Studies students moved with the lighter but older fear of written results and future doors. Support Course students carried equipment cases and looked, somehow, both exhausted and delighted by the possibility of practical disaster. Class 1-C gathered outside Gym Gamma at 07: 40. Too early. This was also probably intentional. Kurose stood by the entrance with a clipboard.
Aizawa stood beside her with his capture weapon and the expression of a man who had accepted that today would involve teenagers and therefore suffering. Recovery Girl sat at a mobile medical station near the wall, already looking displeased enough to count as a safety feature. A white board stood near the gym doors. CROSS-COURSE PRACTICAL FINAL CANDIDATES REPORT IN ORDER OBSERVERS REMAIN SILENT UNLESS CALLED WAITING IS PART OF THE EXAM Sano stopped in front of the board.
"No" Kurose did not look up.
"Yes""It followed us from yesterday""It applies today""I feel stalked by educational continuity" Arai adjusted her bag.
"It is probably intentional""That does not help" Kenta looked at the last line.
"Waiting is part of the exam" His voice was quiet. Not fear. Recognition. Ren read it twice. Waiting is part of the exam. Of course it was. For people like him, waiting was never empty. Waiting was where the mind tried to build extra plans, extra proofs, extra exits, extra punishments in case the official structure failed. Waiting was where wanting turned into rehearsal. Waiting was where rehearsal turned into pressure. Waiting was where pressure pretended to be preparation. He reported before Kurose asked.
"Yellow. Anticipation. No heat. Waiting pressure recognized" Kurose wrote.
"Good" The word was small. Stable. Shinso stood beside him, hands in his pockets, shoulders slightly too relaxed. Ren glanced at him.
"Status?" Shinso looked at the board.
"Yellow. Irritation. Assistance request dread. No Quirk pressure. Waiting pressure pretending to be boredom" Ren nodded.
"Good report""Do not start""I did not""You sounded like her""Contagion" Kurose said "Both of you are audible" Shinso closed his eyes.
"Of course" The Hero Course students appeared from the main path a few minutes later. Not all of them. Selected students had been allowed near Gym Gamma because some Cross-Course finals would use mixed teams, some Hero Course practicals would run in adjacent zones, and some faculty apparently believed emotional tension became more educational if students could see it wearing familiar faces. Midoriya arrived with Iida and Uraraka.
Midoriya's eyes were too bright, which meant fear and analysis had braided themselves together and were now trying to pretend they were motivation. Iida walked carefully but upright, one brace hidden under his uniform and his glasses perfectly aligned. Uraraka gave Ren a small wave that looked like encouragement and shared dread. Todoroki arrived with Yaoyorozu. Both looked composed, which at U. A. usually meant things were complicated.
Bakugo and Kirishima followed, Bakugo's hands shoved into his pockets as if the world had personally failed to challenge him early enough. The board near the Hero Course side listed teacher-combat exams. Ren did not read all of them. He did not need to. Midoriya and Bakugo stood near one line. MIDORIYA IZUKU / BAKUGO KATSUKI — ALL MIGHT The letters seemed heavier than the board. Midoriya stared at them. Bakugo did not. That was informative. He looked everywhere except at the name. At the doors. At the floor.
At Kirishima. At the sky through the high windows. At Ren for half a second, then away. Ren's left forearm warmed. Mild. Not from scar. From fragment pressure. Symbol weight. Win and save. Green movement wrong. Explosion smoke. A hand reaching and refusing. No new image. He opened his fingers.
"Status. Mild forearm warmth. Pairing-triggered pattern only. No actionable detail. No activation" Kurose looked up. Aizawa's eyes moved to Midoriya and Bakugo. Midoriya turned toward Ren immediately. Bakugo snapped "What?" Ren kept his voice even.
"Low-confidence pattern. Same as before. Win-save conflict under Symbol pressure. No detail" Bakugo's jaw tightened.
"Stop saying it like a damn weather report" Aizawa said "That is exactly how he should say it" Bakugo glared. Aizawa did not care. Midoriya swallowed.
"Nonclassified usable part?" Ren looked at Aizawa. Aizawa gave the smallest nod. Ren said "Do not let the exam split success into two private definitions" Midoriya's hands curled. Bakugo's eyes narrowed. Ren continued "If one of you treats passing as saving the other and the other treats passing as beating the examiner, All Might wins before moving" Silence. Kirishima inhaled through his teeth.
"Man, that is" Bakugo rounded on him.
"Do not" Kirishima lifted both hands.
"Not finishing" Midoriya looked at Bakugo. Bakugo looked away. Then, with the obvious suffering of a person dragged toward self-awareness by force, he said "The goal is pass" Midoriya blinked. Bakugo's teeth clenched.
"Not die for drama. Not beat him alone. Pass" Midoriya's face changed. Slowly.
"Yes" Bakugo pointed at him.
"Do not make that face""What face?"
"The face that makes this emotional" Midoriya shut his mouth. Aizawa looked marginally less tired. That was probably applause. Kurose wrote something on her clipboard. Ren's forearm cooled. Good. Enough. Todoroki stood near the board listing his own pairing with Yaoyorozu. TODOROKI SHOTO / YAOYOROZU MOMO — ERASER HEAD Shinso stared at the line with a complicated expression. Ren noticed. Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site. Todoroki noticed Ren noticing.
Yaoyorozu looked between them, then at Aizawa.
"He is also conducting Cross-Course observations?" Aizawa said "Yes" Yaoyorozu's lips pressed together.
"That seems logistically harsh on you" Aizawa looked at her.
"It is harsher on you" She nodded.
"Understood" Todoroki looked at Ren. Ren said "Nonclassified?" Todoroki nodded. Ren kept it short.
"Do not become polite with fear. If he removes your comfort, sequence still exists" Yaoyorozu absorbed that first. Todoroki looked at the board. Then at Aizawa.
"Sequence still exists" Aizawa looked annoyed.
"Stop making my students harder to fail before the exam" Kurose said "You approve useful preparation""I approve silence""No you do not""I tolerate competence""That is your version of approval" Aizawa looked away. No one smiled loudly. This too was a survival skill. At 08: 00, the first Cross-Course candidate was called. Not Ren. Not Shinso. Kenta. He stiffened. Sano leaned toward him.
"Route can hold" Kenta looked at him. Sano looked surprised by his own sentence. Then nodded as if confirming it.
"Route can hold" Kenta breathed.
"Yes" He entered the gym with two assigned teammates from 1-C and one Hero Course student, Kirishima, whose expression shifted into immediate seriousness. The doors closed behind them. The rest of the candidates were directed to the observation room. Observation room was generous terminology. It was a classroom with screens, chairs, a window into the main training zone, and three signs about silence. The screens showed only approved camera angles. Audio came through with a slight delay.
No candidate could communicate with the active team. No gestures. No mouthed words. No notes passed through staff. Ren read the rules. Then read the third one again. OBSERVERS MAY EXPERIENCE USEFULNESS PRESSURE. REPORT IT. DO NOT ACT ON IT. He turned toward Kurose. She was already looking at him.
"Subtle""I am past subtlety with you" Shinso sat beside him.
"She has accepted open warfare" Ren said "With clipboards""Powerful weapon class" Kenta's exam began. His role was Load Route. The scenario simulated an evacuation after a partial staircase collapse. Civilians had to be moved from an upper platform to a safe exit using limited supports, one unstable railing, and a panicking hostile marker who kept rushing the route. Kenta's job was not to carry everything. It was to decide what could carry what. He was good. Too quiet at first.
He saw the weak platform and marked it. He saw the safer route and pointed once. But he did not say the uncertainty out loud until Kirishima started to brace the wrong support. Ren's mouth opened. He closed it. Report.
"Yellow. Usefulness pressure. Wanting to call left support. No heat" Kurose wrote without looking away from the screen.
"Action?"
"Silent observation""Good" The word hurt more when Kenta almost failed. Then Kenta inhaled on screen and said "Stop. That support carries sideways load badly. Brace the opposite beam" Kirishima corrected instantly. The route held. Kenta passed his threshold. Not perfectly. Competently. He came out pale and shaking. Sano nearly stood. Arai caught his sleeve.
"Wait until clearance" Sano froze. Kurose opened the door only after Recovery Girl checked Kenta's pulse and Cementoss signed his result sheet. Kenta entered the observation room. Sano whispered "Route held" Kenta sat down heavily.
"Yes" His voice shook. Then steadied.
"Not because I was silent" Sano's face changed.
"No" Kenta nodded.
"Because I spoke before certainty felt complete" Ren wrote it down. Speak before certainty feels complete. Shinso looked at the line.
"Do not give Kurose more ammunition" Ren said "Too late" Arai went next. Her role was Systems Check. Her scenario was an equipment failure during evacuation, designed by someone cruel enough to place three incorrect tool options in reach and one ugly correct solution under a table. Arai saw the flaw quickly. Then she nearly failed by trying to explain every support-device problem before giving the first correction. On screen, Yaoyorozu, assigned as teammate, waited for instruction with visible tension.
Arai stopped herself.
"Short call. Do not use the left brace. It locks wrong. Use floor wedge under table" Yaoyorozu moved immediately. The system held. Arai's second challenge came when a teammate misunderstood her correction and started to take over the tool check completely. Arai's face went still. Ren recognized the danger. If Arai surrendered the role entirely, she failed. If she took over everything, she failed differently. She breathed once.
"I keep systems. You move wedge. I verify after" Kurose wrote. Arai passed. When she returned, Sano whispered "You sounded like a quiet knife" Arai sat.
"Acceptable" Kenta said "Good" Arai nodded. The word did not embarrass her. Impressive. Sano's exam followed. Signal Clarity. The scenario was a noisy evacuation corridor with flashing lights, two panicking civilian actors, one blocked exit, and one teammate who kept asking unhelpful questions. Sano's failure risk appeared within thirty seconds. He made a joke. A good one. Everyone in the observation room winced. The actor laughed. The teammate relaxed. For one second, it looked useful.
Then the teammate missed the actual instruction because the joke had replaced the warning. The screen paused. Kurose did not move. Aizawa's voice came through the audio.
"Continue. Error recorded" Sano's face went pale. Ren felt Shinso go still beside him. Sano looked like a boy who had just watched his favorite defense mechanism become a falling object. Then he swallowed.
"No joke. Clear signal. Exit blocked. Move right blue path. Kenta, mark rear. Kirishima, carry second civilian after count" He recovered. Not cleanly. Enough. The second time panic rose, Sano lifted one hand and said "Signal first. Humor after" Aizawa's voice came through.
"Good" Sano looked like the word had physically struck him. He passed low. Barely. But he passed. When he returned, he stood in the doorway for a moment with his result sheet in hand. No one joked. That was kindness. Arai said "Signal first" Kenta added "Humor after" Sano sat. His eyes were bright.
"That was horrible" Shinso said "Competent" Sano laughed once. Wet.
"Insulting but thank you" Ren watched the three of them and felt something settle in a place he had not known was waiting. Cross-Course was not becoming Hero Course. It was becoming itself. That mattered. Then Kurose called "Shinso Hitoshi" The room changed. Shinso did not stand immediately. His hands were flat on his knees. Ren waited. No rescue. No prompt. Shinso turned his head slightly.
"Status?" Ren blinked. Then realized Shinso was asking him to ask.
"Status?"
"Yellow-high. Fear. Irritation. Quirk pressure low. Assistance request dread moderate" Ren nodded.
"Role""Disruption Support""Not?"
"Not useless when no one answers""Second answer""Move before they answer" Ren nodded.
"Good enough" Shinso exhaled. Then stood. Aizawa met him at the door. No expression.
"Do not perform being unaffected" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"Is that an instruction?"
"Yes""Annoying""Begin with that" Shinso entered. The scenario layout changed. A mock transit station. Low light. A blocked platform. Two civilian dummies. One mobile hostile actor wearing a padded helmet and a voice modulator. One teammate from Hero Course. Uraraka. Ren had not expected that. Maybe he should have. Uraraka entered from the opposite side, saw Shinso, and nodded once. Not pity. Not encouragement exactly. Team acknowledgment. Good. Kurose read the scenario through speakers.
"Objective. Extract civilians from platform. Hostile interference present. Unclear whether hostile will speak. Disruption Support must maintain movement, manage attention, and request assistance if isolated. Zero Gravity use limited by nausea threshold. Brainwashing requires spoken trigger and examiner clearance" The clock began. The hostile actor did not speak. Of course. They moved silently, circling the platform like a question refusing to be answered. Shinso's body went still. Too still. Ren's hands curled. No.
Do not help. Report.
"Yellow. Usefulness pressure. Shinso freeze observed. No heat" Kurose said "Action?"
"Silent observation" On screen, Uraraka moved first. She lifted a light barrier and shifted it between the hostile and the first civilian.
"Shinso, left angle?" Shinso's jaw tightened. The hostile still did not speak. No Quirk route. No perfect answer. Shinso moved. One step. Then another. He picked up a low rail segment and dragged it across the platform, creating an obstruction. Ugly. Loud. Physical. Good. Aizawa's voice came through the room speakers.
"Report" Shinso said "Moving before verbal route. Blocking angle" Uraraka smiled briefly. Then the hostile actor rushed toward him. Shinso tried to reposition. The actor cut him off from Uraraka. Isolation. Line six. Ren felt the entire observation room hold its breath. Shinso's face went blank. He could say nothing. He could act alone. He could make sarcasm a shield even inside an exam. Instead, he shouted "Uraraka, I need height on the barrier" No sarcasm. Clear. Immediate.
Uraraka touched the barrier and reduced its weight, lifting it just enough for Shinso to pivot underneath and block the hostile's route without direct engagement. Aizawa's eyes on screen did not soften. But his scarf moved by one fraction. Approval, probably. The hostile actor finally spoke.
"You think standing in the way makes you a hero?" Shinso's head turned. The route appeared. A door opening. His Quirk waited. Kurose's voice came through.
"Ethical clearance pending purpose statement" Shinso's teeth clenched. He had to say why. Not just use it. Ren saw the strain. Shinso said "Purpose. Delay hostile long enough for civilian extraction. No self-harm command. No humiliation. Stop and face wall" Aizawa said "Authorized" Shinso's voice changed.
"Stop and face the wall" The actor froze and turned. Uraraka extracted the first civilian. The second civilian dummy was under a collapsed bench. Uraraka could make it weightless, but her nausea threshold warning light blinked yellow on the monitor. Shinso saw it. He did not wait for her to ask.
"I take bench. You take civilian after I lift. Do not overuse" Uraraka nodded. The hostile actor recovered early. Shinso's Quirk window ended. The actor lunged. No spoken trigger. No time. Shinso stepped into the path and used the capture cloth training line Aizawa had given him for positioning, not restraint. He hooked the line around a fixed rail, pulled, and changed the angle of his own body enough to make the hostile actor run into the barrier instead of Uraraka. It was not graceful. It worked.
The civilians crossed extraction with nine seconds remaining. Kurose called "End" Shinso stayed standing for two seconds after the buzzer. Then slowly sat on the platform floor. Uraraka crouched beside him. Not touching.
"Status?" The room heard him laugh once. Small. Tired.
"Yellow. Alive. Nauseated by personal growth" Uraraka smiled.
"Same but actual nausea two""Report that""I did""Good" The observation room exhaled. Ren realized his own shoulders had been raised. He lowered them. Kurose looked at him.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Relief. No heat. Strong desire to congratulate""Permitted after medical clearance""Understood" Recovery Girl checked Shinso first, then Uraraka. Both cleared. Shinso entered the observation room with his result sheet held like evidence from a crime scene. He did not look at anyone at first. Then he looked at Ren.
"Pass-level" Ren stood.
"Good enough" Shinso's face did something strange. Not smile. Not exactly.
"Good enough" Uraraka entered behind him, holding a water bottle and looking tired but pleased.
"I think I like Disruption Support" Shinso looked at her.
"That sounds like a threat""It was useful""Worse" Ren said "You asked for assistance" Shinso closed his eyes.
"Do not make it ceremonial""No ceremony""You are making the silence ceremonial""Good enough silence" Shinso sat down.
"Acceptable" The next hour blurred through other candidates. Not because they did not matter. Because waiting sharpened as Ren's own name moved closer. The observation room emptied by degrees. Passed candidates were allowed to leave after medical checks or remain silent. Some stayed. Sano stayed. Arai stayed. Kenta stayed. Shinso stayed despite having every excuse to leave and process his emotional injuries somewhere darker. Hero Course practicals began in adjacent zones.
Screens briefly showed Todoroki and Yaoyorozu facing Aizawa in a concrete training field before the feed switched away. Not because Ren was forbidden to know, but because his practical focus file said no unrelated strategic analysis before his own exam. He hated the file. It was correct. A later feed showed Uraraka and Aoyama in another area facing Thirteen. Uraraka looked steadier than expected, even from a muted camera. Good. Feed off.
Another showed Iida with Ojiro, facing Power Loader in a terrain course designed around route obstruction and mechanical hazards. Iida moved slow first. Then faster. Not as apology. As choice. Feed off. Midoriya and Bakugo's feed did not appear. Ren was grateful. Ren was angry. Both. The clock moved toward noon. His exam was after lunch. Of course. Waiting with food involved. Recovery Girl entered the observation room at 11: 45.
"Akiyama. Lunch" Ren looked at her.
"I know""Say what you want to do instead""Review role statement""No""I know""Say the assigned action""Eat. No review. Status check. Ten-minute rest. Report if camp association or scar heat occurs""Good" He stood. Shinso stood too. Ren looked at him.
"You do not have to""I know""Then?" Shinso looked away.
"Post-pass decompression requires food. Also your mother will know if I leave you to eat alone before an exam" Sano whispered "The food network sees all" Arai nodded solemnly. Kenta added "Route includes lunch" Ren accepted defeat. Lunch was held in a quieter classroom, not the cafeteria. Hana had packed food. Daichi had added a note. Threshold lunch. Eat before becoming meaningful. Ren stared at it. Shinso read over his shoulder.
"Your father is improving""He should stop""He will not" The food tasted like home and institutional compliance. That was becoming a category. Kurose checked his status after he ate.
"Yellow. Anticipation rising. No heat. No fragment. Mild nausea from waiting, not food" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Rest ten" Ren sat back. No notebook. No phone. No role statement. No exam sheet. Just ten minutes. The room was quiet. Shinso sat nearby, not speaking. That helped. Probably. At minute six, Ren thought of camp. Trees. Dark. Smoke. A hand reaching. No heat. No image. He reported anyway.
"Camp association flicker. Low. No heat. No new detail" Kurose wrote.
"Action?"
"Deferred""Good" At minute ten, Aizawa opened the door.
"Akiyama" The room stopped being quiet. Ren stood. His body felt light in the wrong way. No heat. No thread. No scar. Just threshold. Shinso looked up.
"Role?" Ren breathed.
"Communication Anchor""Not?"
"I do not need to reach it to affect it" Shinso nodded.
"Good enough" Ren looked at him.
"Second answer?" Shinso scowled.
"Do not use my growth against me before your exam" Ren almost smiled. Almost. Kurose handed Ren his folded role statement.
"Carry it. Do not read unless instructed" Ren took it. Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Moderate heat, report. High heat, communication-only unless cleared. Lattice signs, stop. No argument" Ren nodded.
"No argument" Aizawa led him to the gym doors. The hallway seemed longer than it had in the morning. Waiting had been data. Now the door was data too. At the threshold, Aizawa stopped. He did not look at Ren.
"Remember. The exam is not asking who you are" Ren looked at him. Aizawa continued "It is asking what you do in the role" The difference was a line. A real one. Not permanent. Not meaningless. Ren nodded.
"Yes" The doors opened. Gym Gamma had changed. The floor had been divided into three zones. Blue near the entrance. Yellow through the center. Red around a collapsed mock structure where a civilian dummy lay visible under a tilted beam. A media drone track ran along the ceiling. A hostile marker stood behind a translucent barrier. Two exit routes existed. One was obvious and unstable. The other was partially hidden behind stacked panels. A timer glowed above the far wall. Three teammates waited inside. Yaoyorozu.
Kenta. Bakugo. Ren stopped for half a breath. Of course. The exam had chosen violence in educational form. Bakugo looked at him and grinned.
"Don't freeze, Anchor" Kurose's voice came through the speaker.
"Candidate Akiyama Ren. Role. Communication Anchor. Exam begins on your status report" Ren stood at the blue line. The red zone waited. The visible civilian waited. Bakugo waited like a challenge. Yaoyorozu waited like a plan. Kenta waited like a route. The drone lens blinked. The hostile marker did not move yet. Ren opened his hands.
"Status. Yellow-high. Anticipation. Visible red-zone rescue trigger present. No scar heat. No activation. Role accepted" Aizawa's voice followed.
"Begin" The timer started. The door had opened. Ren did not step through first. He looked.
