Chương 33: Load-Bearing

Izuku Midoriya was learning how not to break. Ren Akiyama watched from the upper observation walkway of Gym Gamma with his left arm folded carefully against his ribs, a notebook closed under his right hand, and Recovery Girl's latest restriction sheet sitting in his blazer pocket like an adult threat with medical authority. He was not supposed to be there for training. That had been clarified three times.
He was allowed to observe from a seated position for twenty minutes as part of approved cross-course Sports Festival analysis, provided he did not shout advice, take tactical notes, physically demonstrate movement, provoke Quirk use, test his own body in sympathy, or turn observation into anything Kurose had called "preparation with plausible deniability" The phrase had been unnecessary. Accurate. Unnecessary.
Below him, on the gym floor, Izuku stood in front of All Might with his arms slightly raised, knees bent, breathing too fast and trying not to show it. His right hand was wrapped. His left looked less damaged but still guarded. Sweat darkened his training shirt at the collar. His eyes were fixed on a padded target no larger than his torso. All Might stood several meters away in hero form, bright and massive and loud even when silent. The public version of the man. The pillar.
The smile was softer today, probably because the gym was closed to most students and because only authorized people were present. Ren, Recovery Girl near the lower medical station, Izuku, All Might, and two distant support staff calibrating sensors before leaving. Not a class. Not a show. Still a stage. All Might's voice carried up to the walkway.
"Again, young Midoriya. Minimum output. Do not aim for destruction. Aim for control" Izuku nodded.
"Yes, All Might" He lifted one hand. Green light flickered. Not lightning exactly. Not in the way fragments showed it when panic made everything violent. Here it was smaller. A pulse beneath skin. A brief crackle along fingers. Power trying to become shape before the body understood what shape meant. Izuku stepped forward and struck the padded target. Not hard. Not by Hero Course standards. The target shifted. Izuku's hand jerked back. He hissed through his teeth. All Might took one step forward.
"Young Midoriya?"
"I'm okay" Ren's mouth tightened. Recovery Girl, below, said "That was not the question" Izuku froze. All Might stopped. Ren felt an unreasonable satisfaction. Good. Izuku looked at his hand.
"Pain two. No numbness. No sharp spike. Finger joints intact. Wrist stable" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Better" Izuku's face lit up with exhausted pride. Small. Dangerous. Hope often looked like permission if no one watched it carefully. All Might smiled.
"Excellent improvement!" Izuku almost glowed more from that than from the Quirk. Ren frowned. That was the problem. Not All Might's praise itself. Praise was useful. Reinforcement mattered. Izuku had spent too many years being told no. Belief had weight. All Might's belief had probably saved him as much as it endangered him. But Izuku received praise like load-bearing structure. As if each approving word could hold up the impossible power inside him. As if failure would collapse not only technique, but worth.
Below, All Might adjusted his stance.
"Again. Same output" Izuku nodded. Green flicker. Step. Strike. The target shifted less this time. Izuku's breath caught. Pain. Not severe. Still present. He smiled anyway. Ren's fingers tightened on the closed notebook. Do not take notes. He did not. His mind did. Output too discontinuous. Power treated as event, not baseline. Mental command likely externalized. Heroic framing interferes with scaling. Pain feedback accepted too easily if praise follows. Needs pre-action bracing. Needs post-action assessment.
Needs integration, not discharge. Needs less awe. That last one would be difficult to prescribe. All Might's voice rose with warmth.
"Good! Again!" Izuku's shoulders lifted. Too eager. Ren leaned forward before stopping himself. Restriction. No shouting advice. No intervention. The third strike cracked the target casing. Not severely. Enough. Izuku's hand snapped back harder. His face went white. Recovery Girl moved immediately.
"All Might. Stop" All Might's posture changed. Izuku turned toward her.
"I'm" Recovery Girl pointed her cane.
"Finish that sentence and I add paperwork" Izuku closed his mouth. Good. All Might reached him in two strides.
"Young Midoriya" Izuku held his hand out for inspection, jaw trembling with the effort not to apologize. Ren watched All Might watch him. There was fear there. Too much. Not of Izuku. For Izuku. Also of what Izuku represented. A successor. A secret. A timer. A promise. A boy standing where the Symbol of Peace had no safe model for small-scale failure because All Might himself had become too good at surviving catastrophic success. Recovery Girl examined Izuku's hand.
"No fracture" Izuku sagged. All Might sagged more subtly. Recovery Girl narrowed her eyes.
"Mild joint strain. Ten-minute break. No more increasing output because enthusiasm happened" Izuku flushed.
"Yes, ma'am" All Might bowed his head.
"My apologies" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"Do not apologize. Adjust" Ren almost smiled. Almost. The support staff finished their calibration and exited. The gym became smaller after the door closed. Ren checked his timer. Seventeen minutes. He should leave in three. All Might looked up toward the observation walkway. Ren knew the moment had arrived before the man spoke.
"Young Akiyama, would you remain for a moment?" Recovery Girl's cane struck the floor once.
"Ten minutes. Seated. No secrets that make him medically worse" All Might's smile strained.
"Yes, Recovery Girl" Izuku looked up. His eyes met Ren's. Concern. Curiosity. Maybe embarrassment. Ren nodded once. Izuku nodded back. Alive. Repeatable. Still learning. Recovery Girl guided Izuku toward the medical station. She did not leave the gym entirely. That was not subtle. All Might reached the upper walkway by the stairs rather than leaping because apparently Recovery Girl's authority applied vertically. He arrived in hero form, then looked once toward the lower gym to confirm Izuku was out of earshot.
Smoke curled. The giant body collapsed inward. Toshinori Yagi stood where All Might had been, thin shoulders under loose clothing, blond hair falling strangely around a face that looked carved by exhaustion and stubbornness. He coughed once into a cloth, not badly, but enough to remind the room that the Symbol had maintenance costs no billboard had ever itemized. Ren remained seated. Toshinori lowered himself onto the bench beside him with visible care.
For a few seconds, both watched Izuku below while Recovery Girl checked his hand. Then Toshinori said "You look like you want to correct me" Ren said "I often look like that""Yes" Silence. Toshinori's mouth twitched. This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there. Ren did not soften. Toshinori continued "Today, I would like to know whether I should be corrected" That was harder. Ren looked at him.
"You are asking as Midoriya's mentor?"
"Yes""As All Might?" The thin man's eyes sharpened.
"Yes""As the holder of secrets that are not mine to name?" Toshinori went very still. Below, Recovery Girl pretended not to listen. Ren knew she was listening enough to stop the conversation if necessary. Toshinori's voice lowered.
"Yes" Ren looked back at Izuku.
"He is improving" Toshinori exhaled softly.
"That is not what I feared you would say""It is incomplete""There it is" Ren rested his right hand on the closed notebook.
"He is improving because he is beginning to distinguish success from maximum output. That is good. He is still conceptualizing the power as an event he releases, not a capacity he carries" Toshinori watched him closely.
"Explain" Ren chose words with more care than usual. Not because he feared All Might. Because Izuku's secret stood between every sentence.
"When Midoriya activates, his body changes like it has received an external command. The power appears discontinuously. It arrives, acts, and leaves damage or strain behind. He braces after committing, not before. His focus is on action outcome, not load distribution" Toshinori's fingers tightened around the cloth.
"Load distribution""Yes" Ren pointed with his eyes, not his hand, toward Izuku.
"He strikes like the question is can I make the target move. It should be can my body transmit this force without becoming the failed component" Toshinori looked down. The words hit. Good. Bad. Necessary. Ren continued "Right now he treats pain after successful use as acceptable cost. Because it used to be worse, mild damage feels like improvement. It is improvement. It is also a trap" Toshinori nodded slowly.
"Because he may celebrate less damage instead of no damage""Yes" Recovery Girl, below, made a sound that suggested approval and irritation in equal measure. Toshinori said "We are working on reducing output""Output is only one variable" The thin man looked at him. Ren continued "Timing. Breath. joint alignment. tendon loading. foot placement. hip transfer. shoulder stability. grip. recovery between attempts. emotional state before activation. praise after activation.
All are variables" Toshinori's face changed at praise. Ren did not apologize.
"Your praise affects his output" Toshinori looked pained.
"I know he admires me""That is not the same statement" The man went quiet. Ren watched Izuku below. Recovery Girl handed him water. Izuku accepted with both hands, bandaged hand careful. He looked up once toward the walkway, then away quickly. Ren said "When you praise courage, he hears continue. When you praise improvement after pain, he may hear pain is proof that improvement happened. When you look frightened after he uses the power, he may hear I am failing the person who believed in me.
When you look proud after he breaks less than before, he may hear breaking less is the current standard" Toshinori closed his eyes. The sentence was cruel. It had to be. No. That was dangerous thinking. It was useful. It was not permission to enjoy cruelty. Ren looked at his own hand.
"I am not saying you are harming him intentionally""I know""Do you?" Toshinori opened his eyes. There was no smile now.
"No. Not fully" That answer had become almost familiar between them. Less terrible. Ren nodded. Toshinori said "I did not have this problem when I began" Ren looked at him. Toshinori's mouth tightened.
"My body accepted the power more easily" Accepted. Interesting word. Given. Inherited. Carried. Not created. Not simple. Ren said "Then you cannot use your first experience as his model""I know that now""Knowing is not method" Toshinori let out a small breath.
"You are direct""Efficiency""Brutality""Overlap exists" This time Toshinori almost smiled. Then he coughed lightly and the almost-smile vanished. Ren looked back toward Izuku.
"You are training him like courage can substitute for load-bearing capacity" The sentence struck harder than intended. Toshinori's face folded around it. Ren continued before apology could interrupt.
"It cannot. Courage can make him attempt the action. It cannot make tendons ready. It cannot teach joints to align under force. It cannot build proprioception. It cannot turn emergency output into repeatable movement" Toshinori bowed his head. Below, Izuku laughed softly at something Recovery Girl said. Small. Normal. Good. Toshinori whispered "Then what should I do?" The question was not All Might asking.
It was Toshinori Yagi, injured man, mentor, holder of a dying flame, asking a General Studies student with broken ribs and impossible fragments how not to ruin a boy he loved like a legacy. Ren felt the weight of it. He disliked it. He accepted the shape.
"First, redefine success" Toshinori looked at him.
"Not target movement. Not visible power. Not dramatic progress. Success is unchanged pain status after activation. Success is identical joint function before and after. Success is controlled breath. Success is repeatable output across five attempts, not one impressive strike" Toshinori listened like every word mattered. That was worse. Better. Ren continued "Second, stop training single heroic moments. Train mundane activation""Mundane?"
"Yes. Standing. Stepping. turning. gripping. lifting a light object. balance under minimal output. If he cannot hold a cup without excess, he should not punch a target with it" Toshinori blinked.
"A cup" Ren looked at him.
"The object is irrelevant. The nervous system learns scale through non-catastrophic context" Recovery Girl called from below.
"He is right" Izuku looked between them.
"What are you talking about?" Recovery Girl said "Your terrible survival habits" Izuku flushed. Toshinori looked down at him.
"Drink your water, young Midoriya""Yes, All Might" Ren waited until Izuku looked away.
"Third, remove the idea that damage is payment" Toshinori's expression tightened. Ren continued "He spent years with no power. Then he received one that hurts him. If he sees the pain as the price for finally being able to act, he will keep paying. You need to make pain a failed parameter, not a noble cost" Toshinori's voice was rough.
"I never wanted him to think that""No""But he does""Yes" The thin man swallowed. Ren looked at him.
"If he needs a healer after every successful use, that is not mastery. That is debt" Toshinori flinched. Recovery Girl went silent below. Even Izuku seemed to feel the temperature of the room change, though he could not hear the words clearly. Toshinori whispered "Debt""Yes" Ren's voice stayed low.
"And Midoriya is the kind of person who will mistake debt for gratitude" The cloth in Toshinori's hand twisted. For a moment, he looked older than any symbol should.
"I chose him because he moved before thinking of himself""I know""That is what makes him a hero""Yes" Ren looked down at Izuku.
"It is also what makes him easy to spend" Toshinori closed his eyes. Not denial. Impact. Ren continued "You cannot remove that from him. You probably should not. But you can build systems around it. Rules. thresholds. stop conditions. mandatory reporting. repeatability targets. You can praise restraint as much as courage. More, for now" Toshinori opened his eyes.
"Praise restraint""Yes""That will feel small to him""Then make small feel heroic" The sentence surprised even Ren. Toshinori stared. Ren looked away.
"It is what I am being forced to learn" A quiet passed between them. Not comfortable. Not hostile. Recognizing. Toshinori said "Restrictions?"
"Yes""Recovery Girl?"
"And Kurose. And parents. And apparently everyone else with functioning judgment" Toshinori's mouth twitched.
"They care about you" Ren frowned.
"That is not the operational topic""It may be part of the same one" Ren looked at him. Toshinori's face was tired but gentle.
"Being cared for can feel like being limited when you are used to proving yourself through motion" Ren did not answer. Toshinori had no right to be accurate. He had earned the right the hard way, perhaps. That made it worse. Ren returned to Izuku.
"Fourth, train refusal" Toshinori tilted his head.
"Refusal?"
"Midoriya needs to practice not using the power when he wants to. Not only when he cannot. If every strong emotion becomes activation, then villains, crowds, and opponents will own his output" Toshinori's gaze sharpened.
"The Sports Festival""Yes" The word hung between them. Sports Festival. Crowds. Cameras. Proof. Izuku standing in an arena while the world asked him to be inspiring before his bones were ready. Toshinori's voice lowered.
"He will want to show he belongs""Yes""So will you" Ren looked at him sharply. Toshinori did not look away. Fair. Ren said "Yes""That worries me""It worries several adults""Including you?" Ren considered.
"Yes""Good" Ren almost laughed. The word again. Toshinori smiled faintly.
"It seems contagious""Unfortunately" They watched Izuku below flex his hand under Recovery Girl's supervision. Toshinori said "What do your fragments show about him?" Ren's body went still. There it was. The deeper question. He could refuse. Should perhaps. But this was the chapter he had walked into the moment he told All Might less than he feared, more than he could justify.
"Pain" Ren said Toshinori's face tightened.
"Specific?"
"Broken fingers. Arms unusable. Green light in bursts. Teeth clenched. A stadium. A boy trying to make someone else hear him by destroying himself first" Toshinori's breath hitched. Ren did not say Todoroki. Not yet. The fragment was not fully his to give.
"He fights as if his body is an argument" Ren said "That may win a heart. It may also teach him the wrong lesson if no one names the cost" Toshinori looked toward Izuku.
"A stadium""Yes""The Sports Festival""Likely" Toshinori's hands shook once. Ren continued "I do not know exact sequence. I do not know what can be changed safely. I do not know whether preventing one fracture creates another worse path. But he needs language before the event. Not after.
If you wait until he is already in front of the crowd, the crowd will become one of his instructors" Toshinori whispered "And crowds teach spectacle""Yes" Below, Recovery Girl dismissed Izuku toward the locker area with strict instructions Ren could not hear but could infer from Izuku's posture. Izuku bowed repeatedly. Too many times. Recovery Girl threatened him with the cane. He stopped. Progress. Toshinori watched him leave through the lower exit.
When the door closed, he seemed to shrink further without changing form. Ren checked his timer. The ten minutes had become sixteen. Of course. Recovery Girl would allow it exactly long enough to make everyone guilty. Toshinori said "I am afraid of failing him" Ren did not respond immediately. The honest answer was dangerous. The kind answer was insufficient.
"You will" Toshinori looked at him. Ren continued "In some ways. Everyone does. The goal is to fail visibly enough that correction can happen before the failure becomes doctrine" Toshinori stared. Then, unexpectedly, he laughed. Not long. Not brightly. It broke into a cough halfway through, and Recovery Girl shouted from below "I heard that!" Toshinori covered his mouth.
"I apologize" Recovery Girl called "Adjust!" Ren said "She is consistent""She is terrifying""Yes" The thin man wiped his mouth.
"No blood this time" Ren looked at him.
"That should not be a positive metric""It is the one available" Ren did not like the echo of himself in that. Toshinori noticed. They sat quietly. Then Ren said "Fifth" Toshinori turned back.
"There is a fifth?"
"Yes" The thin man looked resigned.
"Please continue""Do not let him believe your belief is conditional on becoming you" Toshinori's face went still. Ren kept his voice controlled.
"He admires All Might. That is not a flaw. But if he thinks the goal is to become an acceptable vessel for your image, he will ignore any signal that contradicts the image. His body. His fear. His friends. His own judgment" Toshinori's eyes shone. Ren continued "He needs permission to become a hero who can survive being himself" The sentence stayed between them. This time, Ren did not regret it. Not immediately. Toshinori looked down at his hands.
"I tell him he can become a hero""Yes""I meant himself""Then say that part" Toshinori closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were wet. Not crying. Close enough.
"Young Akiyama. Are these fragments or analysis?" Ren looked toward the lower gym. Empty now except Recovery Girl, who was pretending to sort medical supplies with violent patience.
"Both""Can you separate them?"
"Not cleanly""Does that frighten you?"
"Yes" Toshinori nodded.
"It frightens me too""Good" The word left Ren before he could prevent it. Toshinori looked at him. Ren adjusted.
"Fear is appropriate if it leads to safeguards" The thin man smiled.
"There you are" Ren frowned.
"That sounded like Nezu""I apologize""Adjust" Toshinori laughed softly. Recovery Girl shouted "Time!" Both of them flinched. She had weaponized timing. Ren stood slowly. Toshinori stood too, one hand on the bench for support, then straightened with a dignity that looked painful because it was real rather than projected. Before Ren could leave, Toshinori said "May I ask one more thing?" Ren looked at him.
"You may ask""If I ask for your input again, will you give it?" Ren paused. There were several answers. No, because this was too much. Yes, because Izuku mattered. Yes, because Ren wanted to be useful. No, because useful was dangerous. Yes, because secrecy without correction became harm. He said "Through protocol when possible. Directly when necessary. Not as your strategist. Not as Midoriya's hidden instructor. Not as an oracle" Toshinori bowed his head.
"Accepted" Ren added "And not if it replaces you learning how to see him yourself" That hit. Good. Necessary. Toshinori looked up.
"No. It will not" Ren believed him. Mostly. Enough for now. They descended separately. Recovery Girl inspected Ren at the bottom of the stairs as if emotional conversations could bruise ribs. Given recent evidence, perhaps they could.
"Pain level""Ribs four. Stable. No dizziness. Scar quiet. Emotional irritation elevated" She snorted.
"That last one is baseline" Toshinori, behind him, coughed once. Recovery Girl turned on him.
"And you" Toshinori straightened.
"Yes, ma'am""You look like someone let a fifteen-year-old perform mentorship surgery on you with no anesthesia" Ren blinked. Toshinori looked at him. Then at Recovery Girl.
"Accurate""Do not encourage him""I am trying not to" Ren said "I did not volunteer" Recovery Girl pointed her cane at him.
"You never volunteer. You create conditions where intervention becomes obvious and then pretend it arrived independently" Ren opened his mouth. Closed it. Toshinori made the mistake of smiling. Recovery Girl pointed at him next.
"You too. Different flavor" The Symbol of Peace and Ren Akiyama stood side by side under medical judgment and both looked away. Recovery Girl sighed.
"Hopeless" Then she turned back to Ren.
"You are done for today. No more observation. No notes until after dinner. Hydrate. Eat. Tell your parents this conversation happened before they pry it out of your posture""Yes, ma'am" Toshinori said "I will adjust Midoriya's training" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"You will bring me the revised plan before implementing it" Toshinori froze.
"Of course" She narrowed her eyes.
"All Might" He straightened.
"Yes, ma'am""No heroic improvisation with a child's skeleton" Toshinori's face went pale. Ren looked at the floor. The sentence was ugly. Correct. Toshinori bowed.
"No heroic improvisation""Good" There it was again. After leaving Gym Gamma, Ren walked slowly through the corridor toward the main academic wing. His permitted observation had become a medically monitored conversation with the Symbol of Peace about how not to turn Izuku Midoriya's body into a receipt for inherited power. Normal school day. Obviously. His phone buzzed. Izuku. Recovery Girl said no more today. All Might looked serious. Did I do badly? Ren stopped walking.
The hallway was empty enough for him to lean lightly against the wall without appearing too medically suspicious. He typed: No. You did better than before. Izuku replied fast. Then why did everyone look like that? Ren considered. Because improvement creates responsibility. Too vague. Because adults realized praise can damage you. Too much. Because your mentor is afraid and trying to learn before fear becomes method. Absolutely not. He typed: Because repeatability requires changing the training, not only the output.
Izuku: That sounds good? Ren: It is good. Annoying, but good. Izuku: Okay. I didn't break anything. Ren looked at the message. Then typed: That is success. A pause. Then: Good. Ren stared at the word after sending it. Contagion complete. He put the phone away. A few minutes later, Shinso found him near the east entrance because apparently everyone in Ren's life had acquired some form of surveillance instinct.
"You look like you had a conversation above your clearance" Ren said "Possibly""With All Might?" Ren looked at him. Shinso shrugged.
"You smell like Symbol guilt""That is not a sense""Sure" Ren adjusted his bag.
"I advised on Midoriya's training within boundaries" Shinso's eyebrows rose.
"You advised All Might""Within boundaries""That boundary is on fire""Perhaps" Shinso considered.
"Did you tell him bone breaker needs to stop breaking bones?"
"Yes""Good" Ren looked at him.
"You said it too""I contain multitudes""You overuse that phrase""It keeps being true" They began walking toward the exit. Slowly. Shinso matched pace without comment. After a while, he said "You okay?" Ren took too long to answer. Shinso noticed.
"Not medical receipt. Actual" Ren looked ahead.
"All Might asked what he should do" Shinso whistled softly.
"That's a terrible thing to ask you""Yes""Did you answer?"
"Yes""Of course you did" Ren looked at the Sports Festival posters lining the corridor. Stadium. Crowds. Visibility. Students turned into reassurance. Izuku turned into inspiration. Shinso turned into ethical controversy. Ren turned into either proof or warning depending on how badly he wanted to be seen.
"I told him to make small feel heroic" Ren said Shinso went quiet. Then "That sounds like something you need too" Ren closed his eyes for half a second.
"Unfortunately" Shinso nodded.
"Disgusting""Yes""Useful""Yes" At the entrance, Hana waited with Daichi and no visible food bag. Suspicious. Ren reached them. Hana looked at his face once.
"Conversation?"
"Yes""With?" Ren looked at her.
"All Might" Her expression did not change. That was how he knew everything in her changed. Daichi opened the car door.
"Dinner first?" Ren almost smiled.
"Yes" Hana nodded.
"Good" No one asked in the parking area. No one made him explain while students passed and cameras might search gaps in security. They waited until home. Dinner came first. Then the conversation. Ren gave his parents the permitted version. Observation. Izuku control work. All Might asked for input. Ren discussed repeatability, load-bearing, restraint, not using pain as payment, praise, stop conditions, and Sports Festival pressure. No secret names. No source. No details that belonged to Midoriya.
Hana listened with both hands folded. Daichi took no notes. That was how Ren knew it mattered beyond logistics. When Ren finished, Hana said "You told All Might how to care for a boy without spending him" Ren looked down.
"I gave training suggestions""No" Her voice was soft.
"You gave care instructions in the language he could accept" That was unbearable. Ren stood to carry his bowl to the sink. Hana said "Ribs" He sat back down. Daichi quietly took the bowl instead. Ren looked at the table.
"Being useful is not always bad" Hana's face softened.
"No""That makes it harder""Yes" Daichi returned.
"Useful is good when it does not replace being a person" Ren looked at him. Simple sentences. Again.
"I dislike this family's recent thematic consistency" Daichi smiled.
"Good" Ren groaned. Hana laughed. That night, he wrote for five allowed minutes. All Might asked how to train Midoriya. Recommendations: success = no damage, not visible output mundane activation pain as failed parameter, not payment refusal training praise restraint belief not conditional on becoming the Symbol He paused. Then added: Make small feel heroic. He stared at the sentence. The room was quiet. His ribs hurt less than they had in the morning. His scar remained quiet.
His phone buzzed once with a message from Izuku. Today's success: no breaks. Small output. Still hard. Ren typed: Small can be heroic if it is repeatable. Izuku replied: That sounds like All Might today. Ren looked at the message. Then at his notebook. Then back. Perhaps that meant the conversation had already done something. Perhaps not. He typed: Then listen. Izuku: I will. A second message arrived from Shinso. You alive after Symbol guilt? Ren: Alive. Shinso: Good. Ren: Contagion. Shinso: Unfortunately.
Ren closed the phone. Outside, U. A. continued building the Sports Festival. Somewhere, workers installed barriers, checked lights, tested cameras, placed seats, reinforced gates, and prepared a stage where children would be asked to reassure a country by being extraordinary on schedule. Inside, Ren turned off the light on time. Small. Unimpressive. Repeatable. Possibly heroic. He hated that. He needed it. Both.
