Chương 64: Not His Argument

The morning after Hosu, U. A. did not feel relieved. It felt braced. That was worse. Relief should have loosened something. It should have made corridors louder, shoulders lower, breathing easier. Instead, the school moved with the rigid discipline of a body that had survived impact and was waiting for the second injury to declare itself. Teachers spoke in lower voices. Students watched screens they were not supposed to watch. Phones disappeared when adults passed and reappeared when footsteps faded.
Every hallway seemed to know more than it was allowed to say. Ren arrived with Hana and Daichi instead of taking the train. This had not been framed as a negotiation. Hana had stood by the door with his bag in one hand and breakfast in the other and said "Car" Ren had looked at Daichi. Daichi had already been holding the keys. No institutional appeal available. The drive had been quiet. Not empty. Quiet.
Hana had checked his status twice, Daichi had watched traffic with the focused suspicion of a man convinced every red light was personally slowing down medical stability, and Ren had eaten because refusing food would have produced a coordinated parental response he was too tired to survive. At the U. A. gate, Hana stopped him before he stepped out.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Tired. No heat. No fragment. News anxiety. I ate""Good" Daichi leaned over the steering wheel enough to see him.
"If anyone shows you looping footage without clearance, call Kurose""Yes""If you decide not to call Kurose because you think you can handle it, call Kurose""Yes""If you decide that calling Kurose is unnecessary because you are handling it calmly""Call Kurose" Daichi nodded.
"Excellent" Hana touched Ren's shoulder lightly.
"Alive first" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" He left the car before the sentence could become too warm to carry. Shinso waited near the side path with a paper bag in one hand and his own exhaustion in the other. His hair looked less arranged than usual, and there was a faint bruise near his wrist from Aizawa's falling drills. He held out the bag.
"Emergency breakfast two""I ate""Your mother predicted that you would say that and told me to say secondary nutrition protocol" Ren stared.
"The food network has ranks now?"
"It has doctrine" Ren took the bag.
"Status?" Shinso asked"Yellow. No heat. News anxiety. Parentally transported""Same except no parents and no heat. Aizawa transported my dignity into the floor yesterday""Did it improve on impact?"
"Unfortunately" They walked together. Not touching. Close enough that the hallway felt less like an open field. Class 1-C was quieter than usual. Kenta sat with his hands folded on his desk, looking at nothing in particular. Arai was reading an official summary instead of social feeds, which meant Kurose had gotten to her early. Sano had not made a joke since Ren entered. That was how bad things were. Kurose stood at the front board. No greeting. No easing in. Only three columns.
VERIFIED UNVERIFIED DO NOT FEED Ren almost smiled at the third one. Almost. Kurose turned to the room.
"Hosu facts first" Everyone straightened.
"Verified. Multiple villain incidents occurred in Hosu City. Nomu-type creatures attacked civilians and heroes. Pro heroes responded. The Hero Killer was subdued and taken into custody. Pro Hero Ingenium remains hospitalized from the prior attack. Native survived. Midoriya Izuku, Todoroki Shoto, and Iida Tenya survived and are receiving medical review, disciplinary review, and welfare support" A breath moved through the room. Not relief. Something close. Kurose continued "Verified.
Students were involved in direct combat with the Hero Killer. This creates legal, disciplinary, safety, and media consequences. None of you will speculate about punishments" Sano's mouth closed before it opened. Growth.
"Unverified. Most footage circulating online. Most supposed eyewitness accounts. All anonymous claims about student motives. Any post claiming to know classified U. A. information" She tapped the last column.
"Do not feed. Hero Killer praise. Student blame mobs. Scar Hero comparisons. Vigilante fantasies. Hero purity arguments. Any post that turns blood into a ranking system" Ren's right hand tightened around the edge of his notebook. Scar Hero comparisons. So it had started. Of course it had. Kurose's eyes did not stop on him. That meant she was choosing not to make him the lesson in front of the class. Good. Terrible.
"Phones away during class. Anyone who needs verified updates asks me. Anyone who feels tempted to doom-scroll says so before they turn fear into appetite" Sano raised his hand. Kurose looked at him.
"Is doom-scrolling a technical term?"
"It is now in my classroom" He nodded.
"Understood" The class began. It should not have. Grammar should not have existed the day after three students fought a serial killer in an alley. But grammar existed. So did mathematics. So did civics. So did lunch. This was either cruelty or survival. Ren suspected both. By mid-morning, he had written four separate times: Do not feed. Then: Stain is not solved because he is captured. Then: An ideology can escape a cell faster than a body. That last one made him stop. Too clean. Too dramatic. Possibly true.
He circled it once and did not underline it. Kurose passed his desk and saw it. Her hand paused on the corner of his paper. No comment. Again. The first restricted debrief happened after second period. Kurose walked Ren to secure room two, where Recovery Girl waited with tea, Nezu waited on the monitor, and All Might was present through a secure screen in hero form. Not thin form. There were too many institutional lines today. Aizawa was not present. He knew the student safety elements.
He did not know the fragments. He did not need this room. Ren sat. Recovery Girl attached the small monitor before saying anything.
"Status""Yellow. No heat. News anxiety. Anticipated ideological contamination" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"I hate that phrase""So do I""Good" Nezu folded his paws.
"Then we proceed with appropriate caution" Kurose placed a tablet on the table, screen down. Ren looked at it.
"Footage?"
"Transcript first" Kurose said Good. Safer. Worse in a different way. Nezu's voice was calm.
"After the Hero Killer was subdued, he made several statements before fully losing consciousness. Only fragments were captured by body cameras, civilian phones, and pro hero reports. Most public clips are incomplete. One phrase has already begun circulating" Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings. All Might's expression darkened. Ren's stomach sank. Kurose turned the tablet and showed him text, not video.
A CHILD WHO CHOSE THE FALLEN OVER VICTORY STOOD CLOSER TO HEROISM THAN MOST LICENSED FRAUDS Ren read it once. Then again. The room waited. His left forearm remained cool. That felt wrong. Some sentences should have burned.
"Status" Recovery Girl said"Yellow-red. No heat. Anger. Disgust. Recognition of reference. No activation" Kurose nodded.
"Do you recognize the likely reference?"
"Yes""Say it""My Sports Festival match. Falling ice. Camera technician. Todoroki. Losing the match" All Might's hand closed on the edge of the table visible through the screen. Nezu said "Public viewers are making the same connection" Ren stared at the transcript. A child who chose the fallen over victory. Not his name. Not Scar Hero. Still him. Stain had found him without needing him in the alley. That was the most invasive part. Ren said "He used it" Kurose said "Yes" Ren's voice came flatter.
"He took a choice I made to prevent harm and inserted it into his murder theology" Recovery Girl's mouth tightened.
"Yes" All Might spoke carefully.
"Young Akiyama" Ren did not look at the screen.
"Do not say he is wrong about me being heroic" All Might stopped. Ren looked up.
"That is the trap. If we argue only that he misjudged whether my action was heroic, we accept his right to sort people by purity" All Might's expression changed. Kurose's pen moved. Ren looked back at the transcript.
"I did not save that technician to become evidence in a killer's argument" The room went very quiet. Recovery Girl said "Good sentence" Ren almost laughed. It came out wrong.
"Please do not call it good" Recovery Girl's face softened by a fraction.
"Fair" Nezu leaned forward.
"Your distinction is important" Ren breathed.
"Yes""State it" He hated that everyone kept making him state things. He needed it.
"Stain is not wrong because hero society is clean. He is wrong because he thinks blood can clean it" All Might's face tightened as if the sentence had struck something old. Kurose wrote it down. Ren continued before he could stop.
"He did not hate that society wastes people. He hated that sacrifice was spent on people he considered unworthy. That is not correction. It is triage performed by contempt" Nezu's eyes sharpened. Recovery Girl looked at him for one long second. Then said "Stop before you turn disgust into autopsy" Ren closed his mouth. Good. Necessary. Kurose turned the tablet face down.
"Media strategy. U. A. will not confirm that the phrase refers to you. We will not release student commentary. We will not allow interviews. Your provisional hero name direction remains internal. Scar Tissue remains restricted. Any direct request for your reaction is denied" Ren nodded.
"Will people keep using it?"
"Yes" Honest. Bad. All Might said "Publicly, the Hero Killer's ideology will spread. Some will condemn him. Some will imitate the language while condemning the violence. Some will praise him outright. Some will turn students into symbols because symbols are easier than children" Ren looked at him. That had not been a Symbol of Peace sentence. That was Toshinori speaking from inside the armor. Ren said "You know that one" All Might's smile was small and sad.
"Yes" Nezu said "There is another consideration. Villains may notice the same public discussion" Garaki. A file. Hands. Not clear. Ren's monitor ticked faster. Recovery Girl leaned forward.
"Status""Yellow-red. Threat association. No image. No heat. Public visibility concern" Kurose wrote. Nezu nodded.
"We are tightening existing protections. No change to your movement restrictions except increased review of public exposure. Internal modules continue" Ren looked at the transcript again even though it was face down.
"I hate that continuing normally is the right answer" Kurose said "It is often the least satisfying correct answer" All Might nodded.
"Hero work contains many of those" Recovery Girl muttered "So does medicine" Ren rubbed his thumb against his index finger. No thread. No tension.
"What about Iida?" Kurose's voice became careful.
"Alive. Injured. Under medical care and disciplinary review. He sent you a message. You received it?"
"Yes""Any further contact must wait until his school and medical teams clear it" Ren nodded. That was correct. He hated that too.
"Midoriya?"
"Alive. Injuries minor compared to previous patterns, though still unacceptable in context. His mentor has been informed. He is under review" Ren exhaled. No broken bones? Kurose did not say. Maybe not. Maybe some. Better not to ask.
"Todoroki?"
"Alive. Arm injury. Heat and cold strain. Emotionally monitored. Endeavor Agency involved in broader Hosu response, not student debrief" Ren's eyes flicked to All Might. All Might's jaw tightened.
"Endeavor performed well in public response" Ren heard the second sentence without it being spoken. That did not make him safe.
"Good" Ren said The word tasted strange. All Might nodded.
"Yes. Good and insufficient are allowed to coexist" That sentence had been practiced. Ren appreciated it anyway. The debrief ended with restrictions. No footage. No public comment. No unsupervised searches of Stain. No reading comment threads. No tactical reconstruction alone. If exposed to Stain praise, report. If scar heat or fragment response occurs, report. Eat. Always eat. Recovery Girl's empire expanded.
When Ren returned to 1-C, Shinso was waiting at his desk with an expression that claimed indifference and failed under scrutiny. Ren sat. Shinso did not ask immediately. That mattered. Kurose began the next lesson. That mattered less. At lunch, Ren and Shinso stayed in the classroom instead of going to the cafeteria. Kurose allowed it because the cafeteria would be full of Hosu whispers and Ren did not need public whisper exposure before food.
Sano, Kenta, and Arai remained too, not because anyone asked, but because classes sometimes formed around pressure without declaring it. Arai placed a printed official summary in the center of the table.
"No footage" Sano placed a bag of crackers beside it.
"No doom-scrolling carbohydrates" Kenta placed his water bottle down.
"No dehydration" Shinso stared at all of them.
"This is becoming a cult" Arai said "A support structure" Sano said "With snacks" Kenta said "And water" Ren looked at the table. It was ridiculous. It was not nothing. He opened his lunch. Shinso waited until Ren had eaten half before speaking.
"Did Stain say something about you?" Ren paused. The room stayed quiet. Kurose had not said he could not tell them broad impact. Not classified content. Not exact transcript unless cleared. But they would see public discussion eventually. Better a safe sentence than rumor.
"Likely. Public phrase. He referenced a child choosing someone fallen over victory. People are connecting it to my match" Sano's face changed. Kenta's hand closed around the water bottle. Arai looked down at the official summary as if it had betrayed her. Shinso's expression went flat.
"Murderer likes your decision" Ren's throat tightened.
"Yes" Shinso looked furious in a very quiet way.
"That does not make the decision his" Ren looked at him. Arai said "He is stealing framing" Sano whispered "That is a horrifying phrase" Arai nodded.
"Yes" Kenta said "Can you refuse?" Ren looked at him.
"What?"
"If someone uses your action as their argument. Can you refuse it?" The question entered cleanly. Not legally. Not publicly. Not completely. But internally. Ren picked up a cracker because Sano's system apparently had power now.
"I can refuse ownership of his interpretation" Shinso said "Say it worse" Ren blinked.
"What?"
"Say it in a way you would write in the notebook when no one is watching" Ren looked at him. Shinso held his gaze. Not cruel. Demanding precision. Ren breathed.
"I am not his argument" The table went still. Arai said softly "Good" Ren closed his eyes. Of course. The word again. This time he accepted it. Sano reached for his own notebook and wrote the sentence down. Ren looked at him. Sano froze.
"Is that allowed?" Ren considered.
"Yes. But do not make it mine only" Sano nodded, unusually serious.
"Noted" Kenta wrote it too. Arai did not write it. She looked like she had already placed it somewhere more durable. Shinso leaned back.
"There. Refusal" Ren ate another bite. Food before becoming someone's ideological counterargument. Hana would approve. Probably. The afternoon brought the first public wave. U. A. tried to contain it. Hero society tried to frame it. News outlets did what news outlets did when blood, children, heroes, villains, and ideology collided. The Hero Killer's capture should have been an ending, but the clips multiplied faster than official statements could catch them. Stain's glare. Stain's voice. Stain facing heroes.
Stain saying the word false. Stain saying only All Might was worthy. Stain collapsing under restraint and still looking more certain than the adults around him. And the phrase. A child who chose the fallen over victory. It appeared on analysis blogs. Hero forums. Commentary channels. Reaction clips. Some people called it proof that U. A. still produced real heroes. Some called it proof that licensed society needed shame. Some called Ren Scar Hero again. Some called him a victim of a corrupt system.
Some called him a real one. Some suggested he should be in the Hero Course immediately because even Stain could see it. Some said the Hero Killer had recognized purity. Kurose blocked most of it from Ren. Not all. No system blocked everything. The phrase reached him through a whisper near the vending machines. Two second-years he did not know.
"Wasn't Stain talking about that scar kid?"
"Yeah. The one who lost to Todoroki""Kind of wild if the Hero Killer thinks he is legit" Ren stopped. Shinso stopped beside him. The hallway became too clear. The first student noticed him and went pale.
"Sorry" Ren looked at him. His forearm remained cool. Good. His voice did too.
"Do not call that legitimacy" The second student swallowed.
"We did not mean""I know" That made it worse for them. Good. Maybe not good. Ren continued "He is a murderer. He does not get to certify heroes" Both students nodded too fast. Shinso's voice cut in.
"Leave" They left. Ren stood still. Shinso looked at him.
"Status""Yellow. Anger. No heat. Wanting to say more""Useful?"
"No""Then don't" Ren closed his eyes.
"Good""I hate when you use it""I know" Kurose found them two minutes later. Of course. She listened to the report. Then said "Controlled response. No escalation. No physical reaction" Ren looked at her.
"Do not call it clean""Controlled response""Better" Shinso muttered "He is becoming picky about praise categories" Kurose looked at him.
"He should" That sentence stayed with Ren for the rest of the day. Praise categories. Heroism categories. Purity categories. Worthiness categories. Stain's whole ideology was a sorting mechanism with blades. The thought followed him into the evening debrief. This time, the meeting included 1-C. Kurose wrote on the board: IDEOLOGY AFTER INCIDENT Under it: When violence uses a true criticism, the criticism does not become false. The violence does not become true. The room was full.
Everyone had heard something by then. Everyone had seen something or been told not to see something. Kurose turned toward them.
"The Hero Killer's ideology is spreading. You will hear versions of it from classmates, media, comment sections, possibly adults who should know better. We are addressing it directly because silence makes simple narratives sound stronger" She tapped the board.
"Hero society has flaws. Commercialization, ranking pressure, unequal opportunity, media spectacle, agency exploitation, public neglect of inconvenient Quirks, inadequate welfare structures. Those criticisms can be true" The room was silent.
"Stain murdering people does not purify those criticisms. It corrupts them into an excuse for violence" Ren wrote every word. Kurose continued "When someone says only true heroes deserve to stand, ask who gave them the knife that measures truth" Sano whispered "That is terrifying" Kurose said "Good. Be terrified of anyone who wants moral purity to have an execution method" No one joked after that. Kurose turned to the class.
"Examples" Arai raised her hand.
"If someone says a hero is fake because they accept money, that ignores labor and public systems""Good" Kenta raised his.
"If someone says injury proves commitment, that creates pressure to get hurt""Good" Sano's hand rose more slowly.
"If someone says a murderer recognized something noble, that does not make the murderer a judge" Ren's pen stopped. Kurose nodded.
"Good" Sano looked at Ren only after the word. Not before. Ren nodded once. Sano breathed again. Shinso raised his hand.
"Can true criticisms be used by unsafe people because safe people ignored them too long?" Kurose's expression shifted.
"Yes" That answer mattered. Shinso leaned back.
"Then saying Stain is wrong cannot become saying everything he criticized is fine""Correct" Ren looked at him. That was the part that would make Stain dangerous beyond fear. If adults responded to him by defending the entire system as clean, students would hear the lie. If students heard the lie, some would go looking for the person who sounded less like one. Kurose looked at Ren.
"Akiyama. Voluntary" Every student avoided turning too quickly. Ren appreciated it. He stood. Not because he wanted to. Because some sentences needed to be placed where rumor could not shape them first.
"Stain's statement about a child choosing the fallen over victory is being connected to me" The room tightened. He continued "I cannot control whether people make that connection. I can control my response in this room" He looked at the board.
"I am not his argument" Silence. The sentence held. Ren continued "My action during the Sports Festival was not pure. It was scared, painful, partially involuntary, and directed at preventing immediate harm. I lost the match. I collapsed. I needed medical care. That choice does not give anyone permission to rank other heroes by how much they bleed" Kurose's eyes softened by less than a millimeter. Enough. Ren looked at his classmates.
"If someone uses me to praise Stain, do not defend me by accepting his measurement. Refuse the measurement" Kenta nodded. Arai wrote something. Sano's eyes were bright. Shinso did not look away. Ren sat. Kurose let the silence remain for a few seconds before speaking.
"Good. And documented as voluntary statement" Sano whispered "The word survived" Shinso whispered back "Barely" The lesson ended with an assignment. Not homework exactly. A refusal statement. One paragraph beginning with: I refuse the idea that Ren wrote: I refuse the idea that heroism becomes truer when suffering is more visible. Then: I refuse the idea that a murderer can certify a rescue. Then: I refuse the idea that being seen by the wrong person makes my choice belong to him. He submitted the page.
Kurose read it and placed it into the file. Not the public one. The useful one. That night, Class 1-A returned to U. A. under partial medical and disciplinary restrictions. Not all at once. Not publicly. Ren did not see them arrive. He received three messages. Midoriya first. Back at U. A. Alive. In trouble. Less hurt than previous worst. That is not a defense. I know. Ren stared at I know. Then replied. Good. Trouble later. Rest now. Midoriya answered. Trying. Todoroki next. Back. Arm treated.
Father spoke to staff. No direct discussion with me yet. Stable. Ren replied. Good. Stable counts. Todoroki answered. I dislike that too. Then Iida. Short. Back. Medical review complete. Disciplinary review pending. I am not ready to speak yet. Ren read the message several times. Then answered. You do not have to be ready quickly. Iida replied after a long pause. Thank you. Ren placed the phone face down. At home, the television stayed off again.
Hana had already prepared dinner for four before Shinso arrived, which meant she had either predicted him or decided reality could adjust. Shinso came in with Bentaro under one arm and a folded official summary in his bag. He sat. Ate. Did not ask for details. Eventually, Daichi said "People online are idiots" Hana looked at him.
"Specific?"
"Many" Shinso nodded.
"Broadly accurate" Ren looked at his plate.
"Stain used me" Hana's hands stilled. Daichi's face hardened. Shinso looked up. Ren continued "Not by name. Enough" Hana breathed in. Then out.
"What did you say?" Ren looked at her.
"I am not his argument" Hana's eyes shone. She blinked it back.
"Good" This time, the word did not hurt as much. Daichi leaned back.
"Accurate" Shinso pointed with his chopsticks.
"See? Better category" Ren almost smiled. Almost. After dinner, Ren opened his notebook under the twenty-minute limit. He wrote: Stain was not wrong because hero society is clean. Then: He was wrong because he thought blood could clean it. He paused. Then wrote: I did not save that technician to become evidence in a murderer's theology. Then: I am not his argument. The last sentence looked different on paper than it had in the classroom. Less like defiance. More like a boundary.
He closed the notebook before the words could become a performance. Outside, the city kept talking. Screens kept replaying. Commentators kept sorting children and heroes and villains into easy shapes because easy shapes sold better than difficult truths. Somewhere in U. A., Iida sat with consequences. Somewhere else, Midoriya tried not to apologize himself into collapse. Todoroki carried his own flame through another room full of adults who wanted to tell him what it meant.
Stain sat in custody, body restrained, ideology already moving without him. Ren sat at the kitchen table with food in his stomach, scars cooling under his sleeve, and a name card tucked safely inside his notebook. Anchor. Not Scar Hero. Not Painproof. Not pure. Not his argument. For tonight, that was enough to refuse with.
