Chương 77: Conditional

Results at U. A. did not arrive like judgment. That made them worse. Judgment should have thunder. It should have doors opening, names called, scores posted in dramatic columns, students collapsing in relief or shame with the clean brutality of a story that understood how endings worked. U. A. did not do that. U. A.
placed results into folders, color-coded them by category, sent students to conferences, and made teachers say phrases like continued candidacy and training adjustment while everyone's future changed by administrative increments. Ren respected the efficiency. He hated the feeling. Friday morning, Class 1-C entered homeroom to find no scores on the board. Only a sentence. RESULTS ARE INFORMATION. INFORMATION REQUIRES ACTION. Sano stopped in the doorway.
"No" Kurose looked up from her desk.
"You have not read the rest""There is rest?"
"Yes""I reject the sequel" Arai stepped around him and entered.
"The sentence is correct""You always side with the sentence""I side with function" Kenta passed them quietly, then paused by his desk.
"Information requires action" He said it as if testing the load. Ren entered behind Shinso, bag over one shoulder, body tired in the dull post-practical way that felt less like injury and more like the shape left after restraint. His palms were cool. His scars under both sleeves were quiet. He had slept badly but honestly, which Recovery Girl had once said was better than pretending good sleep had happened because he liked tidy reports. Shinso sat beside him and dropped his bag to the floor.
"Status?" Ren looked at the board.
"Yellow. Result anticipation. No heat. Mild urge to interpret silence as danger""Same without heat. Also urge to insult the board" Kurose said "Both logged emotionally if not administratively" Shinso closed his eyes.
"She hears everything" Ren sat. The room filled with the strange quiet of students waiting for private outcomes inside public space. The Cross-Course practical candidates had completed their exams. Written exam preliminary reviews had been cleared. Some students had passed cleanly. Some had passed narrowly. Some had failed categories and would require retests or training adjustments before any continued pathway could be discussed. U. A. did not say failure like a door slamming.
That did not mean the door stayed open. Kurose stood once the bell rang.
"Today you receive threshold result conferences. Some will happen individually. Some in groups where the assessment concerns team function. No one will ask another student for a numerical score. No one will make pass, fail, or adjustment into social hierarchy. Anyone attempting to turn someone else's result into gossip will spend the afternoon alphabetizing incident reports from the Sports Festival" Sano's face went pale.
"That is cruel beyond discipline""Yes""Understood" Kurose's gaze moved across the room.
"Practical results measure demonstrated performance under defined conditions. They do not measure your total worth, your final future, your moral quality, or whether you deserved to try" The room went very still. Ren kept his pen above the page. He did not write that down. He already knew he would remember it badly if he wrote it too carefully. Kurose continued "Some of you will want to treat passing as arrival. It is not. Some of you will want to treat adjustment as expulsion from possibility. It is not.
Some of you will want to pretend you do not care. You do. Do not waste staff time performing otherwise" Shinso looked at his desk. Target hit. Ren did not look at him. Friendship, possibly. The first conferences began before lunch. Ren's was not first. Of course. Waiting remained data. Kenta was called early. He returned with a green-edged folder and an expression somewhere between relief and new responsibility. Sano leaned forward.
"Route?" Kenta sat.
"Held. Pass-level. Continued Cross-Course candidacy. Required training adjustment in verbal uncertainty reporting" Arai nodded.
"That matches observed data" Sano whispered "We are becoming people who say that" Kenta looked at his folder.
"I spoke before certainty felt complete" His voice was quiet. Then he added "I have to practice it until it is less heroic to me" Kurose, from the front desk, said "Correct" Kenta did not flinch from the word. Progress. Arai returned next. Her folder had a green edge and one yellow strip.
"Pass-level. Continued candidacy. Required adjustment in compression under systems overload" Sano looked at her.
"That means quiet knife shorter?" Arai considered.
"Yes""Terrifying""Useful" Then Sano went. He was gone longer. When he returned, his folder had a green edge, a yellow strip, and a handwritten note attached to the top. He placed it on his desk face down. No joke. The class noticed the absence. It became loud. Kurose's eyes moved toward him. Sano inhaled.
"Pass-level. Low pass. Continued candidacy. Required adjustment in signal clarity. Humor cannot replace warning" His voice cracked on the last sentence. No one laughed. Arai turned slightly.
"Signal first" Kenta added "Humor after" Sano nodded once.
"I know" He looked at the face-down folder.
"I hated that the joke worked for one second" Ren understood that. Too well. A thing could help and still be wrong. A thing could comfort and still block rescue. Sano swallowed.
"Because if it worked a little, then I wanted to defend it" Kurose's voice was firm.
"That is why we train it" Sano looked up. For once, he did not answer with a bit.
"Yeah" Shinso's conference was after Sano's. He stood when called with deliberate boredom and failed to convince anyone except perhaps himself. Ren did not speak. Shinso stopped beside him anyway.
"Status?" Ren looked up. He had not expected the question.
"Yellow-low for me. For you, visible performance mask" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"Annoying""Role?"
"Responder-adjacent misery" Ren waited. Shinso sighed.
"Disruption Support. Move before perfect answer. Ask before isolation becomes proof""Good enough""Barely" Kurose said "Shinso" He entered the conference room. The door closed. Ren stared at the board. RESULTS ARE INFORMATION. INFORMATION REQUIRES ACTION. He thought of his own exam. The red line. The second dummy. Bakugo stopping. Kenta looking. Yaoyorozu deciding no. His own voice saying examiner intervention requested. He did not feel like someone who had won.
He felt like someone who had not made the worst thing worse. Maybe that was a form of passing. Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon. He disliked that the sentence was true. Shinso returned twenty minutes later. His folder was green with yellow strips. He held it loosely enough that Ren knew his grip was deliberate. He sat. Ren waited. Shinso looked at the folder.
"Pass-level" Ren nodded.
"Continued candidacy?"
"Yes""Adjustments?" Shinso's mouth flattened.
"Assistance request timing. Ethical purpose statement under pressure. Physical obstruction technique. No external field clearance yet" Ren nodded again. Shinso looked at him.
"Say it""Good enough" Shinso exhaled.
"Good enough" Then, quieter.
"It did not feel fake when they said I moved before the answer" Ren looked at him.
"Because you did" Shinso opened the folder. Closed it.
"I hated asking Uraraka for height on the barrier""Yes""I hated that it worked""Yes""I hate that the part I hate is probably the part they trust" Ren thought of the red line. The buried dummy.
"Yes" Shinso leaned back.
"Terrible system""Effective system""Worst category" Ren almost smiled. Almost. His own name came before lunch.
"Akiyama" The room shifted. Not much. Enough. Ren stood. Shinso looked up.
"Status?"
"Yellow-high. No heat. Red-line memory present. No activation""Role?"
"Communication Anchor""Not?" Ren breathed.
"I do not need to reach it to affect it" Shinso nodded.
"Good enough" Ren entered the conference room. Inside were Kurose, Recovery Girl, Aizawa, and Nezu on the monitor. The same configuration as before. No All Might. That absence again made the room about Ren, not Symbol, not prophecy, not the impossible weight of someone else's legacy. A folder sat on the table. Green edge. Yellow strip. One blue tab. Ren sat. Recovery Girl spoke first.
"Status""Yellow-high. Result anticipation. Red-line memory. No heat. No fragment" Kurose wrote. Aizawa slid the folder toward him.
"Read the first page" Ren opened it. CROSS-COURSE HERO CANDIDATE PRACTICAL FINAL Candidate: Akiyama Ren Role: Communication Anchor Result: PASS Threshold Level: PASS-LEVEL WITH HIGH-STRESS COMPLIANCE Continued Candidacy: APPROVED Training Escalation: APPROVED WITH RESTRICTIONS External Camp Consideration: CONDITIONAL REVIEW OPENED Ren read the page once. Then again. The words did not change. Pass. Continued candidacy approved. Training escalation approved with restrictions.
External Camp Consideration: Conditional Review Opened. Not camp approved. Not transfer. Not Hero Course. Not arrival. But the door had not closed. In fact, another door had appeared behind it. His throat tightened.
"Status" Kurose said"Yellow-high. Relief. Fear. Hope spike. No heat" Recovery Girl watched his hands.
"Good" He looked at the page.
"The yellow strip?" Kurose answered.
"Areas requiring continued adjustment" He turned to the next sheet. Adjustment Required: Delayed exit after impossible casualty trigger. High emotional cost during red-zone refusal. Ongoing tendency to interpret restraint as abandonment. Risk of post-pass overcorrection through additional self-imposed standards. Camp association unresolved. Ren read the fifth line. Camp association unresolved. There it was. Not hidden. Not forgotten. Not exaggerated. Kurose let him finish. Then said "The blue tab is new" He turned.
Blue tab. CAMP CONDITIONAL REVIEW — PRELIMINARY ELIGIBILITY DISCUSSION He did not touch the page at first. Recovery Girl noticed.
"Report""Yellow-red. Camp page trigger. No heat. No image. Anticipation and threat association" Kurose wrote. Nezu's voice came from the monitor.
"Proceed only if you choose" Ren looked up. Choice. He could say no. To the page. Not to the future, necessarily. To this moment. He placed his hand on the paper.
"Proceed" He opened the tab. The page was not approval. It was architecture.
Potential Participation Category: Controlled Cross-Course Candidate Primary Camp Role: Rescue coordination observation / hazard communication drills / low-risk adaptive environment training Excluded Activities: High-intensity combat sparring, unsupervised forest route, night movement without staff escort, deliberate Scar Tissue provocation, external patrol simulation, direct villain-response exercise Required Conditions: Guardian consent, medical clearance, daily recovery checks, staff escort parameters, fragment reporting protocol, no isolation policy, emergency extraction authority, communication device redundancy, peer anchor assignment Ren read peer anchor assignment twice.
Aizawa said "That part is under discussion" Ren looked at him.
"Peer anchor?" Kurose answered "Not babysitter. Not handler. A student cleared to remain within awareness range during lower-risk camp blocks, to support reporting compliance and prevent isolation" Ren's mind moved immediately. Shinso. Then he stopped himself. Not assume. Not impose.
"Candidate?"
"Not decided" Kurose said "Possibilities include Shinso, Midoriya, Iida, Uraraka, or rotating staff-approved pairings. Shinso is also under conditional review. His inclusion is not guaranteed" Ren nodded. Good. No building futures with someone else's consent missing. Recovery Girl leaned forward.
"My position. You are not medically cleared yet" The page stopped feeling like a door and became a cliff. Ren looked at her.
"Yet""Yes. Yet. Do not make me regret using that word" He breathed.
"Conditions?" She lifted her own sheet.
"Two weeks of stable recovery reports. No unreported scar heat. Sleep compliance. No high-trigger training outside approved blocks. Practical stress response improving. Final family conference. Camp association reviewed again. If any lattice signs appear before approval, review resets" Ren nodded slowly.
"That is reasonable" Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"You hate it""Yes""Good. Reasonable things are often hateful" Aizawa said "Camp is not a reward" Ren looked at him.
"I know""Say what it is" Ren looked at the folder. A controlled external environment. A test of evidence. A door that could still close. A risk. A want.
"A conditional training escalation" Aizawa nodded.
"And?" Ren swallowed.
"Not proof that I am almost Hero Course" Kurose wrote.
"And?" Ren's hands tightened. Then loosened.
"Not proof that I am safe" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Good" Nezu's ears lifted slightly.
"And not proof that danger is acceptable because it is managed" Ren looked at the monitor. That sentence mattered. He wrote it down. Not proof that danger is acceptable because it is managed. Nezu continued "Risk management is not risk worship" Ren added that too. Aizawa looked like he wanted to complain about Nezu producing quotable phrases in conferences, but did not. Probably because the phrase was useful. Kurose turned the folder to the final page.
"Your action item. Before family conference, write a camp consent position. Not yes. Not no. Position. What would need to be true for your yes to be real rather than pressure?" Ren stared at the page. That was unfair. Precise. Necessary.
"What would need to be true""Yes" Kurose said "Wanting to go is not enough. Being afraid is not enough. We need the conditions under which consent is valid" Consent. For camp. For training. For being seen. For being at risk. He nodded.
"I can do that" Recovery Girl said "One page" Ren looked wounded. Aizawa said "A page limit is not persecution""It is if the subject is complex""Competency threshold" Ren shut his mouth. Kurose's mouth almost moved. Almost. The conference ended with the official result. Pass. Continued candidacy. Conditional review opened. Medical clearance pending. No camp approval. No transfer. No arrival. When Ren left the room, Shinso was waiting in the hallway. Of course.
He stood from the bench without pretending he had not been waiting. Progress, maybe.
"Status?" Ren held up the folder.
"Pass. Continued candidacy. Training escalation with restrictions. Camp conditional review opened. Medical clearance pending. No approval" Shinso's eyes sharpened at camp.
"Association?"
"No new image. Still unresolved""Peer anchor?" Ren looked at him.
"How did you know?" Shinso held up his own folder.
"Same page. Different wording. Mine says possible peer support participation if camp-approved" Ren blinked.
"They opened your camp review too?"
"Conditional. No external field clearance yet. Aizawa apparently thinks controlled camp observation may be less stupid than uncontrolled ambition""That sounds like him""He also said if I call it babysitting, he will make me babysit Bakugo's emotional regulation" Ren almost smiled.
"Impossible assignment""Critical failure by design" They stood in the hallway. Both holding green-edged folders. Both not in Hero Course. Both still outside the door. But not where they had been before. Shinso looked at Ren's folder.
"Good enough?" Ren breathed.
"Good enough to discuss next risk" Shinso nodded slowly.
"That is a terrible kind of good""Yes" Lunch became a results containment zone. Kurose's phrase, not Ren's. Students sat in mixed clusters again, because after enough shared stress, scheduling separation seemed more decorative than real. Hero Course students arrived with their own results. Some looked relieved. Some looked wrecked. Some looked like they had passed by being emotionally dismantled in a controlled environment, which was apparently U. A.' s preferred educational style.
Todoroki and Yaoyorozu sat across from Ren and Shinso. Yaoyorozu's folder had a green edge and a yellow strip. Todoroki's too. They had passed. Ren did not ask for details. Todoroki volunteered one sentence.
"We passed after Yaoyorozu chose the plan and I followed it" Yaoyorozu looked down. Then said "We passed after he gave me time to choose it" Todoroki considered.
"Yes" Ren nodded.
"Sequence existed" Todoroki looked at him.
"It did" Yaoyorozu's fingers rested on her folder.
"Aizawa-sensei removed certainty. I thought that meant I had no right to lead" Shinso said "That seems to be his hobby" Todoroki said "Removing certainty?"
"Making people move anyway" Yaoyorozu smiled faintly.
"Yes. That was the exam" Midoriya and Bakugo arrived later. Midoriya's folder was green with enough yellow that it looked heavily annotated by concern. Bakugo's was similar, though he held it as if paperwork had insulted his family. Uraraka followed with a clean pass and a note requiring nausea-threshold awareness under emotional stress. Iida had passed with a route-discipline note and a family-call compliance note that made him look simultaneously proud and embarrassed. Kirishima leaned over Bakugo's shoulder.
"Mine says resilience is useful but not a plan" Bakugo snorted.
"They needed an exam for that?" Kirishima grinned.
"Apparently" Midoriya sat beside Ren.
"Your result?"
"Pass. Continued candidacy. Conditional camp review opened" Midoriya's eyes lit up.
"Camp?" Bakugo's head snapped toward them. Kurose, from three tables away, said "Conditional review is not approval" Midoriya startled.
"How does she hear everything?" Shinso said "Government training" Kurose said "Homeroom" Bakugo glared across the room.
"Stop teleporting into conversations""I am seated""That's worse" Uraraka looked at Ren.
"Are you happy?" The question was simple. That made it difficult. Ren looked at his folder. Happy. Afraid. Relieved. Suspicious. Hopeful. Threat-associated. Medically pending. He said "Conditionally" Uraraka stared at him. Then laughed.
"That is the most you answer" Todoroki nodded.
"Accurate" Midoriya smiled. Bakugo muttered "Nerd disease" Ren said "Administrative strain" Shinso said "Terminal" The table relaxed by small degrees. Then Iida spoke.
"If camp becomes available under proper conditions, it would represent a meaningful training opportunity" Everyone looked at him. He adjusted his glasses.
"I am attempting not to make it sound like destiny" Uraraka smiled.
"Good job" Iida looked relieved. Bakugo leaned back.
"It's camp. We train. We don't die. Stop making it poetry" The table went quiet. Not because he was wrong to resist poetry. Because no one at that table trusted the phrase we don't die enough to let it pass untouched. Ren felt the low pressure drop in his chest. Trees. Dark. Smoke. No image. No heat. He reported quietly.
"Camp association flicker. No heat. No new detail" Bakugo's eyes cut to him. This time, he did not snap. Midoriya's face tightened. Todoroki went still. Uraraka's smile faded. Iida sat straighter. Kurose appeared beside the table within three seconds. Not teleporting. Walking very fast.
"Status""Yellow. Flicker only. Trigger phrase camp plus death mention. No image. No activation" Kurose wrote. Bakugo looked away. His jaw tightened. Then he said "Bad wording" It was not an apology. It was not nothing. Kurose nodded once.
"Corrected" Lunch resumed, but the table carried the flicker with it. That was the problem with conditional doors. They existed. They also cast shadows. After school, the family conference was scheduled for Monday. That gave Ren the weekend to write his camp consent position. One page. He considered suing for cruelty. He did not. Kurose would win. At home, Hana and Daichi had already received the official summary. Of course.
The subject line on the printed email read: CROSS-COURSE RESULT AND CONDITIONAL CAMP REVIEW Daichi had printed it. Hana had highlighted it. Shinso, arriving with his own folder because Aizawa training had apparently ended near enough to dinner that the universe did what it now did, stopped at the sight of both parents seated at the table with documents. He looked at Ren.
"This is a hearing" Hana said "It is dinner with paperwork""That is worse" Daichi gestured to a chair.
"Soup first. Due process after" Shinso sat.
"Your father is learning legal intimidation" Ren said "He has a checklist background now" Daichi looked proud. Dinner happened before the documents. Hana insisted. Ren ate. Shinso ate. Daichi explained that he had looked up camp packing lists and then stopped because it was not approval yet. This became its own family achievement. Hana said "I opened the list and closed it" Ren looked at her.
"That was probably harder for you than for me""Yes" No one made that softer. After dinner, the folders opened. Hana read Ren's result page again. Pass. Continued candidacy. Training escalation. Conditional camp review. Her hands were steady. That did not mean she was calm. Daichi read the excluded activities list aloud.
"No unsupervised forest route. No night movement without staff escort. No deliberate Scar Tissue provocation" His voice changed on the last one. Good. He should hate it. Ren did. Hana looked at Recovery Girl's medical conditions.
"Two weeks stable recovery. Sleep compliance. No unreported heat. Family conference. Emergency extraction authority" She exhaled.
"Emergency extraction authority means staff can remove you from camp?"
"Yes""Without your agreement?" Ren paused.
"Yes. If medical or safety threshold triggers" Hana nodded.
"Good" It hurt. It helped. Shinso looked at his own folder.
"My conditions include no external route without staff or assigned group. No unsupervised Quirk application. Aizawa review after each block. Assistance request compliance" Daichi looked at him.
"Assistance request compliance sounds painful" Shinso stared.
"It is invasive that you know that" Daichi nodded solemnly.
"I am learning" Hana turned to Ren.
"What do you want?" Ren had expected the question. He still hated it.
"I want to be allowed to want camp without using wanting as proof" Hana's eyes softened. Daichi looked down at the paper. Shinso did not speak. Ren continued "I am afraid of it. Not only normal afraid. Fragment-adjacent afraid. But fear alone cannot be the entire answer either" Hana asked "What would make yes real?" The assignment. Already in the room. He swallowed.
"I have to write that""One page?"
"Yes""Good" He looked betrayed. Hana smiled sadly.
"You would hide in five pages" Daichi whispered "Ten" Shinso said "Appendices" Ren looked at all of them.
"I am surrounded" Hana reached across the table. Not taking his hand. Offering. He placed his hand in hers. No scar heat.
"Good" she said "Then we keep the page honest" That night, Ren sat at his desk with the blank page. CAMP CONSENT POSITION Not yes. Not no. Position. What would need to be true for yes to be real? He wrote the first sentence. I want to go. He stopped. Too naked. Too simple. He left it. Second sentence. Wanting to go is not evidence that going is safe. Good. Third. Fear of going is not evidence that staying is right. Also good. Then the conditions came. Medical clearance must be based on behavior, not optimism.
The camp role must be specific before departure. Restrictions must be enforceable, not decorative. I must be allowed to report fear or fragment association without automatic shame or automatic removal unless threshold requires it. No one may treat my participation as proof that I am almost transferred. No one may use my presence as evidence that danger is acceptable because it is managed. Emergency extraction must be real. Peer anchor assignment must include that student's consent.
I must not be alone with a trigger I have already reported. If I say yellow-red, the response cannot be "push through" by default. If I say stop, there must be a procedure. If staff says stop, I obey. He paused. The page was almost full. One more line. He knew it before writing. My yes is real only if I am allowed to remain a person after giving it. He placed the pen down. His hand shook once. Not heat. Not scar. Just truth moving through muscle. He did not add anything else. One page. Complete. Not perfect.
Enough. Across the hall, Hana did not knock. She asked through the door.
"Done?"
"Yes""Do you want me to read it tonight?" Ren looked at the page. Not yet.
"Tomorrow""Good enough" The phrase held through the door. Ren folded the page once and placed it inside the green-edged folder. Outside his window, the city moved without knowing that a school had opened a conditional door for a boy who had once been told there was no door at all. Somewhere in U. A.' s files, his name now sat beside pass, candidacy, restrictions, and camp review. Somewhere else, beyond U. A., people watched public clips and waited for larger student events. Ren did not know that. Not clearly.
Only the low pressure remained. Trees. Dark. Smoke. A hand reaching. No new image. No heat. He wrote one final note in his notebook before bed. Conditional is not safe. Then: Conditional is not no. Then: My yes must leave room for me to remain a person. He closed the notebook. The door was not open. But someone had unlocked the room before it. For tonight, that was enough to be afraid of. And enough to want.
