All Might requested a private meeting three days after the Sports Festival. The request arrived properly. That mattered. It came through Kurose, who received it from Principal Nezu, who had received it from All Might with medical clearance requested before scheduling, which meant that at least three adults had been involved in preventing the Symbol of Peace from simply appearing in Ren's doorway and turning his nervous system into a public event. Ren appreciated the bureaucracy. This worried him.
Kurose delivered the request after afternoon classes, holding her tablet with both hands and watching Ren over its edge.
"All Might has asked to speak with you under existing controlled protocol" Shinso, seated beside Ren and pretending not to listen, stopped pretending immediately. Kenta looked up from his notes. Sano inhaled. Kurose pointed at him without looking.
"No" Sano exhaled sadly. Ren kept his hand still on the desk.
"Today?"
"If Recovery Girl approves""Topic?"
"His note. Your match. Midoriya's match. Language. Possibly mentorship boundaries" Shinso leaned back.
"That sounds like a meeting designed by guilt" Kurose looked at him.
"It may be" Ren looked down at his notebook. The page contained three lines from that morning's reflection. Release is not failure. Dropping the disk was a choice. Small answer first. His right index finger had not activated again. He had wanted it to. He had not tried. That had become the most annoying form of progress possible.
"Who will be present?" Ren asked"Recovery Girl and Principal Nezu. I will coordinate outside unless requested. Your parents have already been informed and gave consent for the meeting if you also consent" Shinso's eyes flicked toward him. Not obvious. Obvious to Ren.
"Not Shinso?" Ren asked Shinso's head turned. Kurose's expression did not change.
"No" Shinso looked away first.
"Obviously" The word carried too much. Ren looked at him.
"This is a protocol meeting""Obviously" Shinso repeated Kurose watched them.
"Shinso" He looked at her.
"Not being in this room is not being excluded from the hallway" His face went flat.
"I know""Say it like you know" He inhaled through his nose.
"I know" Kurose nodded once. It was not comfort. It was structure. Ren appreciated that too. Worrying trend. He said "I consent" Kurose typed.
"Meeting after final period. Medical wing, secured room two. Fifteen minutes maximum unless Recovery Girl ends it earlier" Sano raised his hand. Kurose looked at him.
"Can we send emotional support snacks?"
"No""Can we send non-emotional support snacks?"
"Hana already did" Sano lowered his hand.
"Defeated by maternal logistics again" Shinso muttered "She is inevitable" Ren did not smile. He wanted to. Good. After final period, Ren walked to the medical wing with Kurose on his left and Shinso on his right until the hallway split. Shinso stopped before the secure corridor. He shoved his hands into his pockets.
"So" Ren looked at him.
"So""Do not let the Symbol of Peace turn your injury into a motivational poster""I will attempt resistance""Attempt harder""Yes" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"And if he says something actually useful, write it down" Ren nodded.
"I will" Shinso looked at the door. The envy was there. Not ugly. Not clean either. All Might had sent Ren a note. All Might had asked to speak with Ren. All Might was part of Ren's protocol because Ren knew things he should not know and had survived things he should not have had to survive. Shinso did not say any of that. Ren did not insult him by pretending it was not in the air. Instead he said "Aizawa tomorrow" Shinso's face shifted.
"He said movement basics""Future inconvenience""He called it conditioning""Threatening""Yes" Ren said "Tell me after" Shinso looked at him. Some of the tension left.
"Maybe""Good" Shinso groaned.
"It is everywhere" Kurose opened the secured corridor door.
"Process while walking, Akiyama" Ren stepped through. The door closed behind him. Secure room two did not look dramatic. U. A. seemed determined to make every important room look like a place where paperwork could survive a fire. The table was plain. The chairs were padded but not comfortable. A monitor sat against one wall, turned off. There were no windows. A medical cart waited in the corner beside Recovery Girl, who was already glaring at Ren's gait before he had fully entered.
"Too stiff" Ren looked at her.
"My ribs object to theatrical walking""Your ribs object to being ribs under your management" Kurose stopped at the doorway.
"I will be outside" Ren nodded.
"Thank you" She closed the door. The room locked with a soft click. Recovery Girl attached a small monitor to Ren's wrist.
"Status" Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.
"Pain two at rest. Four with movement. Left shoulder four. Scar heat absent. Fatigue moderate. Emotional anticipation yellow""Yellow is not a decoration""I know""Do you?"
"More than before" She studied him. Then nodded grudgingly. Principal Nezu appeared on the monitor after Recovery Girl activated it, seated somewhere private, paws folded over the table.
"Good afternoon, Akiyama""Principal" Nezu looked toward Recovery Girl.
"Are we stable?" Recovery Girl snorted.
"Medically? Acceptable. Philosophically? No one at this school is stable""Fair" A knock came from the other door. Not the corridor door. The private access door. Recovery Girl opened it. All Might entered as the Symbol of Peace. That was the only way to describe it. Tall. Golden. Smile present. Shoulders broad enough to carry a skyline and foolish enough to try. He wore a loose version of his hero suit under a long coat, likely for controlled transit through less public corridors.
His presence filled the room before he spoke. Ren's monitor betrayed him by increasing. Recovery Girl looked at the numbers. All Might saw it too. His smile dimmed. Not disappeared. Adjusted.
"Young Akiyama" Ren breathed.
"All Might" All Might looked at Nezu on the screen, then at Recovery Girl.
"Is the room secure?" Nezu said "Yes" Recovery Girl said "If anyone tries to enter, I bite them first and ask credentials later" All Might's smile twitched. Then his body changed. The Symbol collapsed inward. Not dramatically. Not like defeat. Like a held breath finally released. Steam puffed faintly from his shoulders. Height vanished into angles. Muscle emptied into a thin frame. The coat fell too large around him. His face became sharper, older, tired in ways the stadium was never allowed to see.
Toshinori Yagi stood where All Might had been, one hand briefly against the chair to steady himself. Ren's monitor climbed again. Recovery Girl pointed at him.
"Breathe" Ren did. Toshinori looked pained.
"I can remain in my hero form if that is easier" Ren shook his head once.
"No. The lie is heavier" The words came out before he could filter them. Toshinori went still. Nezu's eyes sharpened with interest. Recovery Girl muttered "There goes the gentle opening" Ren closed his eyes.
"Sorry" Recovery Girl said "Illegal word" Ren corrected.
"Thank you for not making me look at the Symbol while discussing what the Symbol does to people" Toshinori slowly sat. The chair looked too large and too small for him at once.
"That is one of the reasons I asked for this meeting" Ren looked at him. Toshinori folded his hands on the table. The fingers were long, bony, too human after years of watching the world's strongest smile punch through disasters.
"I wanted to speak about the note" Ren's eyes moved to the table. The note was not here. It was at home now, because Hana had decided anything that important should not remain in a school building overnight unless copied, sleeved, and legally witnessed. Kurose had made a copy. Recovery Girl had complained. Daichi had bought a folder. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. Ren looked back.
"It helped" Toshinori exhaled. Some of the fear left his face. Not all.
"I am glad""It also hurt" The fear returned. Toshinori nodded.
"I expected that it might""Then why send it?"
"Because not saying the first word would have been cowardice, and saying only the first word would have been harm" Ren absorbed that. Heroic. Too expensive. Not a model. Not praise alone. Not warning alone. Three words bracing each other. Like scar tissue, maybe. No. Too poetic. Dangerous. He said "You wrote it before Midoriya broke his fingers""Yes""Then you had learned it before failing again" Recovery Girl closed her eyes. Nezu's ears tilted. Toshinori did not flinch. Good. Maybe.
"Yes" Ren watched him.
"That was too sharp""It was accurate""Still" Toshinori's mouth moved into something that was not a smile.
"I have been hit by gentler villains" Ren almost smiled. Stopped. No rib warning. Progress. Toshinori continued "Young Midoriya's match was progress. It was also harm. I have to learn how to hold both without using one to excuse the other" Ren said "You told him that?"
"Yes""How?" Toshinori looked down at his hands.
"I told him I was proud of his control. I told him his broken fingers were not tuition. I told him reaching Todoroki did not require paying with bone, even if he believed that was the only coin he had in the moment" Ren stared. The room became quieter. Recovery Girl opened her eyes. Nezu's expression softened by a fraction. Ren's throat tightened.
"Good" Toshinori huffed once. The sound was almost a laugh.
"The word continues to haunt us""Yes" Ren leaned back carefully.
"Did he believe you?"
"Not fully""Did you?" Toshinori looked up. For a second, the room saw the man who had carried the Symbol so long that he no longer knew where his spine ended and the pose began.
"Not fully" Honest. Painfully. Ren looked at the table.
"Then say it until one of you does" Toshinori nodded slowly.
"I intend to" Nezu spoke from the monitor.
"That is an improvement in instructional model" Recovery Girl said "That is principal language for finally" Toshinori bowed his head.
"Deserved" The room held the admission without applause. Good. Ren's right index finger rested on the table edge. No tension. No need. Toshinori looked at it.
"Recovery Girl told me there was a small observation" Ren's hand stilled. Recovery Girl said "I told you there was a medically restricted micro-response. Do not turn it into hope with muscles" Toshinori coughed lightly into one hand.
"I will not" Ren watched him.
"Scar Tension""Yes. I heard the provisional name""It held a ball for one second""That sounds" Toshinori stopped himself. Ren waited. The old All Might might have said amazing. The old All Might might have smiled too brightly. The old All Might might have made one second into a flag. Toshinori took one breath. Then said "Usable, if protected" Recovery Girl looked at him with open suspicion. Ren's monitor stayed steady.
"Better" Ren said Toshinori lowered his head.
"I practiced""That is both reassuring and concerning""It is also true" Nezu's paws folded tighter.
"Language is training too" Recovery Girl said "Everyone is discovering this late" Ren looked at Toshinori.
"Does All Might have to relearn language or Toshinori?" The question landed harder than expected. Toshinori's thin shoulders rose with breath.
"Both. But All Might has had more practice getting it wrong loudly" Ren nodded.
"Midoriya hears All Might louder" Toshinori closed his eyes.
"Yes""So do others""Yes""So the safer words have to be public eventually" Recovery Girl said "Careful" Ren looked at her.
"I am not asking him to reveal anything. I am saying the Symbol praises damage in a language people copy" Toshinori looked at him. No smile now. Only listening. Ren continued "If All Might says a student was amazing because he broke himself, the world hears permission. If All Might says a student was heroic and the cost was unacceptable, the world has to hear both" Silence. Nezu's eyes gleamed.
"That is sharply phrased" Recovery Girl said "It is also correct" Toshinori's hands closed slowly.
"For years, people have told me I made them brave" Ren said nothing. Toshinori continued "I did not ask often enough whether I also made them reckless" The sentence was too large for Ren to answer quickly. It belonged to All Might more than to him. But he was in the room because his body had become evidence of the question. So he answered anyway.
"Both" Toshinori looked at him. Ren said "Always both" Toshinori smiled then. Small. Tired. Not Symbolic.
"I am learning that phrase from you""Shinso uses it better""I will ask him one day" Ren imagined Shinso being told the Symbol of Peace wanted to learn a phrase from him. He almost smiled again. Safe. Small. Recovery Girl saw and did not interrupt. Toshinori's expression changed after that. More serious.
"May I ask about the agency inquiries?" Ren looked at Nezu. Nezu nodded.
"Within restricted scope" Ren said "You may ask""The Endeavor Agency inquiry troubled you" Ren's left forearm warmed beneath the wrap. Mild. Recoverable.
"Yes" Toshinori saw the movement in his face. Not the heat, probably. The reaction.
"I understand why" Ren looked at him.
"Do you?"
"I understand some of why. I will not pretend to understand all of it" Better. Ren breathed.
"They used clean words""High-stress survival response?"
"Field persistence. Compatibility with extreme-environment training" Toshinori's face tightened.
"Endeavor sees through training categories even when he is looking at children" Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened. Nezu remained silent. Ren asked "Is that why he is Number Two?" Toshinori did not answer immediately. Good.
"Yes" he said finally "And no. He is powerful, disciplined, relentless, intelligent, and effective. He is also a man who has treated the people nearest to him as extensions of a goal. Both truths matter. His rank does not erase the second truth. The second truth does not make his professional danger less real" Ren absorbed that. Endeavor was not a cartoon villain in a hero ranking. That would have been easier. He was effective. Legitimate. Dangerous.
A request from him could not be burned for satisfaction without consequences. Kurose had known. Of course she had. Toshinori continued "If you are ever offered proximity to him, do not evaluate only what he can teach. Evaluate what he will ask you to become in order to be taught" Ren wrote that inside himself.
"What he will ask me to become""Yes" Recovery Girl nodded once.
"Acceptable sentence" Toshinori looked oddly proud of being medically approved. Ren asked "What did he ask Todoroki to become?" The room froze slightly. Toshinori's face became older.
"I cannot answer for Young Todoroki""No""I can say this. A child should not have to turn half of himself into rebellion just to keep one adult from owning the whole" Ren looked down. Small fire. One answer too large. Ownership without consequences. Consequences without ownership.
"He came to see me" Ren said"I heard""From who?"
"Recovery Girl provided a medical summary. No details beyond safety" Recovery Girl lifted her chin.
"Correctly" Toshinori looked at Ren.
"Did it harm you?" Ren considered.
"No. It cost" Toshinori nodded.
"That distinction again""Yes""Was it worth the cost?" Ren almost answered. Stopped. He looked at Recovery Girl. She looked pleased against her will. Then he looked back.
"I do not know yet" Toshinori's expression softened.
"That may be the healthiest answer in the building" Nezu said "A low bar today, but yes" Ren looked at him.
"Principal" Nezu smiled.
"Encouragement should be accurate too" Toshinori coughed into his hand. A red speck touched his palm. Recovery Girl's face changed instantly.
"Time" Toshinori looked at the blood with irritation rather than alarm. Ren looked away because the thin form was not his to witness more than necessary, and because the body in front of him had also been made into a public resource for too long. Toshinori wiped his hand with a cloth from his pocket.
"I apologize" Recovery Girl said "You will after I see your vitals" He nodded. Then looked at Ren.
"One more thing, if permitted" Recovery Girl glanced at Ren's monitor.
"One minute" Toshinori leaned forward slightly.
"Young Akiyama. You have a gift for seeing the cost inside heroic language. Do not let that gift become contempt" Ren went still. Toshinori's voice remained quiet.
"There will be students who still need big words to move. There will be civilians who survive because they believed a simple thing. There will be moments when the Symbol's language saves before it harms. If you see only the harm, you will become unfair in a different direction" The sentence entered like a blade turned sideways. Not to stab. To separate. Ren looked at him.
"You are saying do not become cynical""I am saying cynicism is often pain trying to feel intelligent" Nezu made a small delighted sound. Recovery Girl muttered "I hate that he said something good while bleeding" Ren stared at Toshinori. The words hurt because they were aimed at a future he could recognize. It would be easy to hate the language of heroes. Too easy. The crowd. The agency letters. The headlines. The applause. All of it had teeth.
But a child under rubble might still need someone to say I am here and mean something too large to be clinically precise. Both. Always both. Ren whispered "I will try" Toshinori smiled.
"Then I will too" Recovery Girl pointed toward the private door.
"Out. Vitals. Now" Toshinori stood carefully. He did not transform back. Not yet. The room was secure. The Symbol could remain outside for one more minute. At the door, he paused. Ren said "All Might" Toshinori turned. Ren had used the name on purpose. Not Toshinori. Not here. Not for this.
"When you praise Midoriya, make sure he hears he exists before the power" Toshinori's face changed. The blood, the age, the thinness, the failure, the Symbol, all of it seemed to pass through one expression and leave something raw behind.
"I will" Ren nodded.
"Good" Recovery Girl groaned. Nezu smiled. Toshinori left through the private door. Recovery Girl followed him with the medical cart and the moral certainty of a predator. The monitor screen remained on. Nezu looked at Ren.
"You handled that well" Ren leaned back, suddenly exhausted.
"Did I?"
"Yes""Did he?" Nezu's ears tilted.
"Better than before" Ren closed his eyes. Better than before. The only kind of progress that seemed to exist lately. Kurose entered after Recovery Girl cleared the outside corridor. She looked from Ren to the empty chair to the monitor.
"Meeting completed?" Nezu said "Yes" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Status""Pain unchanged. Fatigue increased. Emotional state complicated. Scar heat mild during Endeavor discussion, resolved. No activation" She typed.
"Any immediate concern?" Ren opened his eyes.
"Cynicism is often pain trying to feel intelligent" Kurose stopped typing. Nezu looked delighted again. Kurose said "Who said that?" Ren looked toward the private door.
"All Might" Kurose's eyebrows rose.
"Annoying when they grow" Ren almost laughed. Stopped. Small smile only. Safe.
"Good sentence" he said Kurose stared at him. Then at Nezu. Then back.
"I see the word has fully escaped containment" Ren's smile remained small. The monitor stayed steady. For now, that was enough. Later, when Ren returned to Class 1-C, Shinso was waiting near the window with a rice ball he claimed not to have bought for Ren and therefore placed on the windowsill with great hostility.
"Well?" Ren picked up the rice ball.
"You bought food voluntarily""Don't change the subject""Did you eat one too?" Shinso glared.
"Yes""Good""I walked into that""Yes" Shinso crossed his arms.
"How was the Symbol?" Ren looked through the window. The sky over U. A. was beginning to darken. Training fields stretched below, ordinary and waiting.
"Practicing" Shinso's eyebrows shifted.
"Words?"
"Yes""Did he say something stupid?"
"Yes""Did he say something useful?"
"Yes""Both?" Ren looked at him.
"Always" Shinso sighed.
"One day we will encounter a simple person and not know what to do" Ren unwrapped the rice ball.
"What did Aizawa make you do?" Shinso's expression went distant with fresh irritation.
"Walk. Catch cloth badly. Eat. Reflect. Be perceived""Difficult day""Awful""Useful?" Shinso looked out the window.
"Yes" Ren took a bite of the rice ball. Tuna. Acceptable. Maybe Shinso had remembered. He did not comment. Friendship. The hallway outside 1-C filled with students going home, going to clubs, going to training, going to places where the Sports Festival was already becoming story. Ren stood by the window with Shinso beside him and thought about safer words, second answers, big symbols, small grips, and the danger of becoming clever enough to dismiss hope before it could help anyone.
All Might had asked him not to let cost become contempt. Ren hated that he needed the warning. That made it worth keeping. He took another bite. The rice ball was not a metaphor. That also helped.
