Chương 23: The Morning After
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 124 chương · ~46 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
Ren Akiyama woke before dawn because his body had mistaken sleep for negligence. For a moment, he did not move. That was partly medical advice and partly fear. The living room ceiling sat above him in the dim blue of early morning, familiar and flat and offensively ordinary. A thin line of light showed beneath the kitchen door. The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere outside, a scooter passed too fast for the hour. The blanket over his legs had shifted during the night but not fallen.
His left arm rested on pillows exactly where Hana had placed it. His ribs hurt with the deep, patient cruelty of injuries that had decided to stay longer than adrenaline. He was home. Not USJ. Not the staff shelter. Not the white interview room. Not the hallway where students passed wrapped in blankets while adults spoke in low voices. Home. The body did not accept the distinction immediately. Ren listened. No alarms. No static. No door impacts. No black fog. No heavy footsteps beyond steel.
The refrigerator clicked. He breathed in. Pain answered. Good. Painfully means yes. The phrase arrived in Daichi's voice and made Ren close his eyes again. Not to sleep. Just to hold it still. On the low table beside the couch, his notebook lay where Hana had placed it before he fell asleep. The pencil sat beside it, dull and soft, deliberately harmless. Three lines waited on the page. USJ. Alive. Not alone. Scar Tissue. In daylight, they would probably look melodramatic.
In the dark, they looked like the only words that had survived the night. Ren lifted his right hand slowly. His palm complained where the old exam injury had not fully healed. He ignored the notebook. He reached for the water bottle instead, because Recovery Girl's restrictions had included hydration and because he could hear Hana's disapproval in advance. The bottle cap resisted. Only a little. Enough to make his ribs tense. A hand reached from the chair beside the couch and took it from him. Ren froze.
Daichi unscrewed the cap, handed the bottle back, and sat forward out of the shadow.
"You're awake" Ren looked at him.
"You were sleeping?"
"Poorly""That is not the same""No" Daichi's hair was flattened on one side. His shirt was wrinkled. His face looked older than it had yesterday morning, as if USJ had not only injured students but aged the people waiting for them outside. Ren drank. Small sips. Recovery Girl had been very clear. Daichi watched him like the bottle might attack. Ren lowered it.
"You should sleep properly" Daichi leaned back.
"Interesting advice""It is still true""So was most of your advice yesterday, apparently. That does not mean I enjoyed watching where it came from" Ren looked at the ceiling. Fair. The kitchen door opened. Hana stepped out with a mug in both hands and stopped when she saw his eyes open. She had changed clothes but not slept enough. Ren could tell from the skin beneath her eyes and the way her hair had been tied back too tightly.
"Pain?"
"Manageable" Her expression sharpened. Ren corrected "Ribs five at rest. Arm three. Shoulder four. Cheek one. Head no pain. Dizziness absent. Breathing painful but stable" Daichi looked at Hana. Hana looked at Daichi. Then she looked back at Ren.
"I hate that this is better""It is more precise""I know. That is why I hate it" She walked closer, set the mug down, and touched his forehead with the back of her hand before he could object.
"Temperature normal""I could have told you""I know" She did not move her hand immediately. Ren let it stay. That was new data. Not for the notebook. Not yet. Daichi glanced at the table.
"Did you write more?"
"No""Do you want to?"
"Yes""Are you allowed?" Ren looked at the pencil.
"Not analysis" Hana sat on the edge of the coffee table, ignoring its intended purpose.
"What would it be?" Ren did not answer immediately. If he said report, they would say no. If he said memory, they would worry. If he said I need to put it somewhere before it starts moving inside me, that would be accurate and too exposed. He said "Containment" Daichi's face changed. Hana's too. Ren regretted the word. Then Hana picked up the notebook and pencil. She opened to the page with the three lines, turned to a clean page, and placed both on his lap.
"Five minutes" Ren looked at her.
"That was not in the discharge instructions""No. That is my instruction" Daichi said "More dangerous" Ren took the pencil. His hand hovered over the page. For several seconds, nothing came. Then he wrote: Not report. Not map. Not sequence. Then paused. His fingers tightened. The pencil point trembled. He wrote: Door held. Kenta stayed. Shinso answered. Arai heard. Nana moved. Fujimura flashed. Tamura climbed. Sano blocked. Reina walked. I did not keep them alive. We did. His chest hurt. Not ribs. Or not only.
Hana read silently. Daichi stood and moved to the kitchen without saying anything. He returned with a box of tissues and placed it on the table like an offering to a species Ren did not belong to but might one day study. Ren stared at the box.
"I am not crying" Daichi sat.
"Preventive logistics" Hana covered her mouth. A sound escaped. Not quite laughter. Good. Maybe. Ren set the pencil down before five minutes. Hana did not comment. That was also good. Morning arrived improperly. It should have asked permission. Instead, the room brightened, the city grew louder, and the world outside the apartment began to behave as if yesterday had already become something it could discuss. The first official message from U. A. arrived at 6: 42.
Hana read it aloud because Ren's phone had been confiscated by family consensus after he tried to check it before breakfast.
"Dear parent or guardian. Following yesterday's villain attack on U. A. training facilities, all first-year classes are suspended today while student welfare checks, security review, and incident documentation are conducted. Students will receive department-specific instructions from homeroom faculty. Medical restrictions issued yesterday remain in effect. Counseling and support services will be available beginning today. Please monitor students for physical or emotional distress and contact U. A.
medical staff if symptoms worsen" Daichi leaned against the counter.
"No school" Ren looked toward his phone. Hana said "No""I did not say anything""You looked at it""I need department-specific instructions""You need breakfast""Both can be true""Breakfast first" That was the day's first defeat. There would be many. This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it. Breakfast occurred at the coffee table because sitting at the dining table hurt more.
Hana made rice porridge with egg and fish, soft enough that chewing required little effort and warm enough that the first spoonful made Ren realize his body had been waiting for permission to be hungry. He ate with his right hand. Slowly. Not because he wanted to. Because Hana watched each movement, and Daichi watched Hana watching him, and the apartment had become a place where everyone pretended not to monitor everyone else. At 7: 15, Daichi turned on the television at low volume. Hana's head snapped toward him.
"Why?"
"We need to know what they are saying" Ren looked up. Daichi met his eyes.
"Not for analysis. For exposure control" That was a very Ren answer. Ren disliked hearing it from someone else. The morning news had already built the first layer of narrative. Aerial footage of U. A.' s outer perimeter. Police vehicles. Security barriers. Reporters in dark coats speaking seriously into microphones. File footage of All Might smiling in daylight. Older footage of U. A. students at festivals, cropped to look inspiring. A headline repeated across the bottom of the screen. Villain Attack at U. A.
Rescue Training Facility Then another. Students Injured, No Fatalities Confirmed Then, inevitably: All Might Repels Villain Group Ren's spoon stopped. Hana noticed. Daichi did too. The reporter spoke quickly, carefully, and not carefully enough.
"Details remain limited, but official sources confirm that a group of villains infiltrated a U. A. rescue training exercise yesterday afternoon. Several students and faculty members were injured. No student fatalities have been reported. The Symbol of Peace, All Might, was seen entering the facility during the incident and is believed to have played a central role in repelling the attackers" Believed. Central role. Repelling. The words arranged themselves into a shape the public could survive.
No mention of Aizawa holding the line before All Might arrived. No mention of Thirteen down. No mention of General Studies students in civilian roles. No mention of children hiding in a staff shelter while a principal asked one of them for tactical recommendations because the building was still shaking. That was good. That was terrible. Another panel appeared showing a commentator.
"Questions are already being raised about U. A.'s security procedures, though many are praising the swift response of pro heroes and faculty members. Parents across Japan are asking whether the nation's top hero school can still be considered safe" Hana turned the television off. Silence snapped into the room. Ren looked at the black screen. Daichi set the remote down. Hana's voice was steady in a way Ren distrusted.
"Not during breakfast" Ren said "The public narrative will""No" He stopped. Hana looked at him.
"Not during breakfast" This was different from not analyzing. More specific. More human. Ren lowered his spoon.
"Yes" He ate. The porridge tasted different after that. Not worse. Just less protected. At 8: 03, Kurose called. Hana answered on speaker with Ren beside her because Kurose had apparently anticipated the possibility of him hiding symptoms and requested a parent present for all official communication.
"Good morning, Mrs. Akiyama""Good morning, Kurose-sensei""How is he?" Ren said "Present" Kurose said "I did not ask whether he remained in the apartment" Daichi coughed. Hana's mouth twitched. Ren adjusted.
"Pain stable. No dizziness. Breathing painful but not worsening. Ate breakfast. Slept intermittently""How many hours?" Ren hesitated. Hana answered "Maybe three, broken""Nightmares?" Ren looked at his mother. Hana did not look away.
"Yes" she said Kurose was quiet for one second.
"Expected. Still important. Akiyama, do not classify expected as irrelevant" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes, sensei""Today's instructions. No schoolwork unless specifically sent. No independent incident report. You will submit a factual statement tomorrow under supervision. You may write personal notes if they are not maps, tactical reconstructions, villain classifications, institutional failure analysis, Sports Festival planning, transfer planning, Quirk testing plans, or lists titled anything like errors, improvements, failures, or variables" Ren stared at the phone.
Daichi murmured "She is thorough" Kurose continued "I heard that" Daichi said "Good" Ren said "That leaves limited categories""Excellent. Use them""What personal notes are acceptable?"
"Feelings" Ren opened his eyes.
"No" Hana covered her face. Daichi turned toward the kitchen. Kurose said "That was not a negotiation""Feelings are imprecise""So is blood loss before measurement. You still had it" Ren had no response ready. Kurose continued "You may also write sensory notes if needed. No tactical conclusions" Ren considered.
"Acceptable""How generous" Hana looked like she might laugh and cry simultaneously. Kurose's voice softened slightly.
"Ren" The name, not surname, made him still.
"You are not responsible for reconstructing yesterday today" He looked at the notebook.
"Someone has to""Yes. Adults. Investigators. Faculty. Police. Medical staff. Security staff. You may contribute later. Not today" He said nothing. Kurose waited. Then Hana said "Ren" He exhaled.
"Yes, sensei""Good. Shinso will also be checked today. He has been instructed to rest and document only basic physical symptoms. Do not encourage him to violate that""I would not""Convincing delivery remains a skill you lack" Daichi said "That is also true" Ren looked at him. Betrayal was becoming a family activity. Kurose added "There will be a class welfare meeting tomorrow, likely remote or in controlled small groups depending on medical clearance. No discussion of classified event details in public channels.
No posting. No interviews. No speculation on group chats. If students contact you, keep responses brief""Understood""And Akiyama""Yes""You kept saying not alone yesterday. Apply it today" The line went quiet. He understood what she meant. He wished he did not.
"Yes""Good. Rest" The call ended. Ren looked at the phone. Hana took it before he could.
"I need to check messages""You can check with us""That creates social inefficiency" Daichi said "Tragic" Hana sat beside him and unlocked the phone. Messages had accumulated overnight. Some from classmates he barely knew. A few from 1-C students in the shelter group. One from Sano. Still alive. Knee sucks. You? Ren responded: Alive. Ribs inefficient. Rest. Sano replied almost immediately: You text like a medical receipt. Ren wrote: Accurate. Sano: Annoying. Ren did not answer. One from Kenta.
Don't write some stupid report saying you did everything. I will correct it violently with footnotes. Ren stared at it. Hana read over his shoulder.
"I like him" Ren said "Violently with footnotes is structurally unusual" Daichi said "I like him too" Ren responded: Noted. I already wrote we did. Kenta: Good. Eat. Ren looked up.
"Why is everyone" Hana said "Because you need to eat" He stopped. There were messages from Nana and Reina, both too grateful and too apologetic. Ren did not know how to answer them without making things worse. Hana watched him struggle.
"What do you want to say?"
"That they do not owe me. That they moved. That they helped. That fear was not failure. That gratitude is unnecessary. That I am glad they are alive" Hana nodded.
"Say that, but shorter" Ren wrote: You do not owe me anything. You moved when it mattered. Fear was not failure. I am glad you are alive. Hana read it.
"Good""Too emotional?"
"No" He sent it before he could revise it into something colder. Then Izuku's message. Sent at 2: 11 a. m. Ren, I know Kurose-sensei probably said not to talk about details yet and maybe Recovery Girl told you to rest, but I wanted to say I'm glad you're alive. I'm really sorry I couldn't get to your group or help with 1-C. I know that probably sounds arrogant because there was so much happening and I could barely handle where I was.
I just keep thinking if I had moved differently or faster or understood sooner then maybe more people wouldn't have gotten hurt. Please don't answer if you're resting. Actually please rest. Sorry. I'm glad you're alive. Ren read it once. Then again. Hana did not read over his shoulder this time. Good. Daichi watched his face. Ren's ribs hurt. His arm hurt. His patience hurt too, though that was not medical. Izuku's guilt was familiar enough to irritate because it mirrored things Ren refused to name.
If Ren answered badly, Izuku would carry it. If he answered too gently, Izuku would turn that into permission to apologize more. If he ignored it, Izuku would think he had been rejected. If he said what he wanted to say fully, it would become a conversation neither of them could survive through text. He typed: I am alive. You are alive. Do not apologize for not being in two places during a coordinated attack. That is not responsibility. Rest first. We can talk later. He stared at it.
Then added: Do not send sorry before alive. He sent it. Izuku responded three minutes later. You're right. Alive first. I'm alive. I'm glad you are too. We'll talk later. Please rest. Ren put the phone down. Hana touched his hair. He allowed it. Then came Shinso's message. It contained only: Alive? Ren looked at it for longer than necessary. Then typed: Alive. You? The reply came slowly. Unfortunately. Ren almost smiled. Pain prevented follow-through. He wrote: Kurose said rest.
Shinso: Kurose says many terrible things. Ren: She said not to encourage you to violate rest instructions. Shinso: You're encouraging by existing. Ren: I will reduce output. Shinso: Don't. It's weird. A pause. Then another message arrived. Food was bad. Ren read it. Then looked toward Hana, who was pretending not to look. He typed: Did you eat it? Shinso: Define eat. Ren looked at Hana. She took the phone from his hand.
"Hana" She ignored him and typed with terrifying speed. This is Hana Akiyama. Eat something real today. Not as a moral victory. As maintenance. You saved people yesterday. Maintenance is allowed. Ren stared. Daichi leaned over.
"Add that he can call if needed" Hana typed again. Also, if you need anything practical and U. A. cannot help quickly, call this number. Practical means food, transport confusion, adult forms, or not wanting to sit somewhere alone. It does not need to be dramatic. She handed the phone back. Ren read the message. It was too much. It was exactly enough. Shinso did not reply for two full minutes. Then: Your mom types like a hostage negotiator. Hana laughed once. Actually laughed. Ren wrote: Accurate.
Shinso: I ate half. Hana took the phone again. Better than none. Eat the other half later. Shinso: Is this legally enforceable? Hana: Emotionally. No reply. Daichi smiled into his tea. Ren looked between them.
"This may be too direct" Hana handed the phone back.
"Maybe" Daichi said "Good things can be slightly too direct" Ren looked at the message thread. Shinso did not write again for seven minutes. Then: Thanks. No punctuation. No expansion. No defense. Ren showed Hana silently. She looked at the screen for a long moment. Then nodded and stood to wash dishes that were already clean. The rest of the morning stretched strangely. Ren expected to become restless immediately. Instead, exhaustion rose from beneath pain like a tide.
He slept for forty-three minutes and woke with his hand clenched around the blanket. Hana was still in the room. Daichi had moved to the table with a laptop, reading official parent documents with the expression of someone preparing for war through PDF files. At 11: 30, U. A. sent an updated statement to families. Daichi read silently first. His jaw tightened. Hana asked "What?" He hesitated. Ren opened his eyes fully. Daichi said "They are preparing students and families for media attention.
They say no student names will be released. They say families should avoid public comment. They say rumors are already circulating online about students involved" Ren's stomach tightened.
"Which rumors?" Hana said "No" Daichi looked at him.
"Not today""It may involve Shinso" Hana's expression shifted. Daichi looked back at the screen.
"There are no names in the official message""That does not answer""No" Daichi said "It doesn't" Ren looked toward his phone. Hana blocked the line of sight with her body.
"Ren""If Shinso's Quirk use becomes public without context""Then U. A. and Kurose deal with it today" Hana said He stopped. She looked tired. Kind. Terrified. Immovable.
"You are not his public relations department from the couch" Ren stared. That sentence was absurd enough to work. Daichi said "Also, he has the hostage negotiator now" Hana looked at him.
"Daichi""What? I am supporting" Ren leaned back carefully. The idea of Shinso facing rumors alone made something in his chest tighten. Not ribs. Again. Annoying. Maybe necessary. After lunch, Kurose sent a short class-wide message. Class 1-C. Today is for rest and family contact. Do not discuss incident details in group chats. Do not post. Do not answer media accounts, unknown numbers, or students asking for classified details. Tomorrow we will hold a controlled welfare meeting. You are not expected to be fine.
You are expected to follow instructions. A second message followed. If you need help, ask. Needing help is not a disciplinary issue. Ren read the second message twice. Then a third message appeared privately. Akiyama. This applies to you. He stared at it. Daichi laughed softly when Hana showed him. Ren wrote: Understood. Kurose replied: Too fast. Suspicious. Ren did not respond. That seemed safest. By afternoon, the media had become unavoidable even with the television off.
Neighbors messaged Hana after seeing the news and knowing Ren attended U. A. Some were kind. Some were intrusive in the way kindness became when curiosity wore concern's clothing. Hana answered little. Daichi answered less. Ren was not allowed to answer at all. At 3: 00, the official public U. A. press conference began. They did not watch live. They lasted twelve minutes before Daichi checked a summary on mute. Ren saw only still images at first. Principal Nezu at a podium. Faculty behind him.
Present Mic visible at one side, unusually grim. Police representative. No All Might. That absence was wise. Concerning. Necessary. A headline appeared. U. A. Confirms Villain Group Targeted First-Year Rescue Exercise Another. All Might Intervened, Faculty Injured Protecting Students Another. Sports Festival Status Under Review Ren sat up too quickly. Pain corrected him. Hana turned.
"What?"
"Sports Festival" Daichi's eyes closed.
"Of course" Hana looked at both of them.
"What about it?" Ren read the headline again. Sports Festival Status Under Review. Under review did not mean canceled. Under review meant public debate had already begun. The Sports Festival was not just a school event. It was reassurance. Recruitment. Spectacle. Ranking. Society watching future heroes perform controlled danger after uncontrolled danger had entered the school. Kurose's lesson returned. A society that depends on heroes will forgive systems for failing as long as someone photogenic arrives afterward.
Ren whispered "They will want it to continue" Hana's face tightened. Daichi looked at the muted screen.
"After yesterday?"
"Especially after yesterday" The words sat there. Hana looked almost sick. Ren regretted saying them. Not because they were wrong. Because they were too early. Nezu's instruction had been clear. Leave analysis to adults for at least a few hours. Had a few hours passed? Technically yes. Spiritually no. Hana turned off the screen.
"Not today" Ren let it go. That was becoming a skill. Painful. Necessary. Evening came slower than morning. Ren's body grew heavier as the day passed. The adrenaline debt collected interest. His ribs pulsed. His forearm throbbed beneath clean bandages. The old scar itched in a way that felt too deep for skin. Recovery Girl's limited healing had closed enough to help but left exhaustion behind, and the exhaustion had teeth. At 6: 20, Shinso texted again. Ate the other half. Tell hostage negotiator. Ren showed Hana.
She smiled. Small. Real.
"Tell him good" Ren typed: She says good. Shinso: Terrifying. Ren: Yes. A minute later: Placement transport came. Back now. Ren stared at the words. Back. Not home. Maybe he was reading too much. Probably not. He typed: Safe? The answer took longer. Safe enough. Ren disliked that. Hana read the screen. Daichi did too. No one said adoption. No one said rescue. No one said poor boy. Good. Hana said "Ask if he has what he needs for tonight" Ren hesitated.
"That may be too much" Daichi said "Practical" Hana nodded.
"Practical" Ren typed: Do you have what you need for tonight? Food, medication, charger, school instructions. Shinso replied: Yes. Then: No charger. Ren looked at Hana. Hana was already standing.
"We have an extra""He is not here""Tomorrow then" Daichi said "Or U. A. can deliver if Kurose is coordinating" Hana looked at him. Daichi raised both hands.
"Practical" Ren typed: We have an extra. Can give it tomorrow if allowed. Shinso: Why do you have extra chargers? Ren: Daichi labels cables by room and use category. Shinso: Of course he does. Daichi looked offended.
"It prevents conflict" Ren typed: It prevents conflict. Shinso: I hate that I believe you. The conversation ended there. But not badly. Later, after dinner, after medication, after another check-in from U. A. medical staff, after Hana changed his bandage under remote instructions while Ren recited pain levels and Daichi looked at the ceiling because watching his son's wound cleaned made his hands shake, Ren was allowed five more minutes with the notebook. Hana sat beside him. Daichi across from him.
Not reading over his shoulder. Not not reading either. Ren opened to the page from morning. Not report. Not map. Not sequence. Door held. Kenta stayed. Shinso answered. Arai heard. Nana moved. Fujimura flashed. Tamura climbed. Sano blocked. Reina walked. I did not keep them alive. We did. He looked at the words. They still felt true. Incomplete. But true. He turned the page. His hand was slower now. He wrote: Media says All Might repelled the attack. True. Incomplete. Media says students were injured. True.
Incomplete. U. A. says no student fatalities. True. Minimum miracle. He stopped. The pencil hovered. Then he added: Aizawa stood before All Might arrived. Thirteen stood before All Might arrived. Iida ran before reinforcements arrived. 1-C moved before rescue arrived. Shinso used his Quirk before anyone could give permission. Useful things happened before the Symbol arrived. This does not make the Symbol less important. It makes the delay visible. His hand tightened.
Hana touched the edge of the page, not covering the words.
"Is that analysis?" Ren looked at it.
"Yes" Daichi leaned forward. Ren closed the notebook.
"I'm done" Hana did not scold him. Daichi did not take the notebook away. That felt like trust. Or exhaustion. Maybe both. Before sleep, Ren received one more message. Izuku. Alive first. I'm alive today too. I hope you are. I keep thinking about what you said. We can talk when you're ready. Ren answered: Alive today too. Later. Then, after a moment: Do not decide today what yesterday means for the rest of your life. He stared at the sentence. It was Kurose's, mostly. He sent it anyway. Izuku replied: I'll try.
You too. Ren did not answer. Because trying was already more honest than promising. Night settled. This time, Ren slept in his own bed after Daichi helped him move and Hana rearranged pillows until his ribs were supported from three directions. The apartment lights dimmed. His parents left the door slightly open like he was younger than fifteen and like maybe all children became younger after almost not coming home. Ren lay awake longer than he admitted. Black fog came when he closed his eyes. So did the shelter.
So did the door. So did All Might's light. So did the headline. Sports Festival Status Under Review. He opened his eyes. The ceiling above his bed was not the living room ceiling. Home had layers too. His phone buzzed once on the nightstand. Unknown? No. Shinso. Still alive? Ren looked at the message. Then typed: Yes. You? A pause. Unfortunately. Ren let out a breath that almost became a laugh and stopped before the ribs punished him. He wrote: Good. Shinso replied: Don't get sentimental. Ren: Too late.
Hana has your charger. Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again. Then: Terrifying. Ren set the phone down. Outside his room, Hana spoke softly to Daichi. He could not hear the words. He did not need to. Their voices were there. That was enough. For now. Ren closed his eyes. The fog waited. The shelter waited too. And this time, when the door shook in memory, it did not open before he remembered that other hands had held it closed.
