The morning after the Sports Festival smelled like broth. That was not symbolic. It was actual broth. Ren woke to the smell of it, warm and salty and impossible to ignore, and for three seconds his fever-thick brain interpreted it as a medical intervention more aggressive than the IV.
Then he opened his eyes and found Hana sitting beside the bed with a thermal container in her lap, Daichi asleep badly in the chair near the wall, Recovery Girl reading a report with open disdain, and Kurose standing by the window with a tablet under one arm and a cup of tea in her other hand. No stadium noise. No crowd. No match feed. No commentators turning pain into excitement. Just broth. Ren stared at the ceiling.
"Status?" Kurose asked without turning. Ren swallowed. His throat hurt less than yesterday. Progress.
"Pain three at rest with medication. Five if breathing deep. Left shoulder six with movement. Fever lower. Scar heat mild. Tremor minimal. Hungry" Hana opened the thermal container.
"Good" Ren looked at her.
"I said hungry""Yes""That was not a request""It was a medical report with culinary implications" Recovery Girl said "Correct" Ren looked toward Daichi.
"He is asleep" Daichi's eyes opened.
"No" Hana did not look at him.
"You were asleep""I was conducting horizontal vigilance" Ren said "In a chair" Daichi sat up.
"Vertical vigilance failed around four in the morning" Kurose turned.
"Noted as parental fatigue" Daichi pointed at her without energy.
"No file""Too late" Ren almost smiled. His ribs warned him. He stopped. Good. That was good. He had stopped before pain taught him. Recovery Girl saw anyway.
"You are improving" Ren looked at her.
"I did not do anything""You almost laughed and chose not to. That is more self-preservation than several students displayed yesterday" Kurose said "Some professionals too" Recovery Girl did not deny it. Hana handed Ren a spoonful of broth after Recovery Girl approved the angle. He took it slowly. The heat went down his throat and settled badly, then better. His stomach woke with immediate interest and no patience. Food as protocol. Absurd. Useful. He took another spoonful.
Kurose waited until he had eaten enough to make Hana less sharp around the eyes before she spoke again.
"The award ceremony concluded last night" Ren looked at her.
"I know Bakugo won""Correct""Todoroki second""Correct""Third?"
"Tokoyami and Iida shared formal recognition due to bracket structure and match outcomes" Ren absorbed that.
"And Bakugo?" Kurose's expression became almost invisible.
"Dissatisfied" Daichi rubbed his face.
"That is a kind word" Ren looked between them. Hana said "They did not show you""I gathered" Recovery Girl muttered "No one is showing him that ceremony until his ribs can survive laughing or despairing" Ren blinked.
"Both?" Kurose said "Bakugo received his medal with poor acceptance behavior""Poor acceptance behavior" Ren repeated Shinso's voice came from the doorway.
"That is the gentlest way anyone has ever described being restrained on national television" Ren turned his eyes. Shinso stood there with a paper bag and two drinks. His hair looked like he had slept on a moral argument. Aizawa stood behind him in the hallway, wrapped in bandages and disapproval, which seemed to be his natural post-disaster habitat. Recovery Girl looked at the clock.
"You are early" Aizawa said "You said eight""I said eight if he was stable""He gave status" Recovery Girl narrowed her eyes at Ren.
"Traitor" Ren took another spoonful of broth.
"Medically expressive" Shinso stepped in after Hana waved him inside. He put the bag on the side table.
"Your mother sent me to buy normal food" Hana said "I asked""You implied I would disappoint civilization if I returned empty-handed" Daichi said "That is family communication" Shinso looked at him.
"Concerning" Aizawa entered last. He stopped near the foot of the bed, far enough not to crowd, close enough to remind everyone that the room had become official. Ren straightened by half an inch. Recovery Girl pointed.
"Do not sit up" Ren froze. Aizawa said "Good reaction time""Was that a test?"
"No" Kurose said "In Eraser Head, that means yes, incidentally" Aizawa ignored her. He looked at Ren.
"Do you remember what I said last night?" Ren nodded slightly.
"My Quirk is not a license. It is an emergency system. If I build a fighting style around emergencies, I build a career around failure" Aizawa nodded.
"And?"
"There may be a boring part" Recovery Girl said "Hypothetically" Aizawa said "Boringly" A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. Hana said "Safely" Daichi said "With food" Shinso sat down.
"Your Quirk has more adult supervision than some governments" Ren whispered "Unfortunately necessary""Growth" Recovery Girl checked the monitor and then turned to the others.
"We are not training" Aizawa said "Correct" Ren felt disappointment before he could stop it. The monitor did not change enough to expose him. Small mercy. Recovery Girl continued.
"We are observing whether there is any low-level residual controllable response under medical conditions. If I dislike what I see, we stop. If he dislikes what he feels, we stop. If any of you says something encouraging in a stupid tone, you leave" Daichi lifted a hand.
"Can parents ask anxious questions?"
"Quietly" Hana said "Can mothers glare?"
"Therapeutic" Kurose typed.
"I am noting that as unofficial" Recovery Girl rolled a small cart closer to the bed. On it sat objects so unimpressive that Ren distrusted them immediately. A soft rubber grip pad. A textured wooden block. A pressure gauge attached to a handle. A strip of smooth plastic. Three adhesive sensors. A bowl of warm water. A bowl of cool water. No weights. No restraints. No dramatic equipment. No ice. No blood. No reason for the body to become miraculous. Ren hated the relief.
Recovery Girl began attaching sensors around his right palm and wrist, not the left arm with the exposed scar-lines. The right hand had abrasions from the ring but fewer active lines.
"Why right?" Ren asked"Because your left arm is currently a complaint wearing skin""Fair""Also because if your Quirk only responds where trauma is loudest, we learn one thing. If it responds faintly in a less active area, we learn another" Kurose said "Do we have consent recorded?" Recovery Girl looked at Ren. Ren said "Yes. I consent to low-level observation. I can stop it" Hana's expression softened with pain. Kurose typed.
"Recorded" Aizawa leaned against the wall. Not relaxed. Never that. Resting by force. Shinso watched the cart.
"This is less dramatic than expected" Recovery Girl said "That is why it might be useful" Ren looked at the rubber grip pad.
"What do I do?"
"Nothing heroic""That is broad""Place your fingers on the pad. Do not squeeze. Do not brace. Do not visualize the stadium. Do not think about Todoroki. Do not think about being seen. Do not think about proving anything" Ren stared at her.
"You listed every thought""Yes. Now fail quietly" He placed his fingers on the pad. The sensor screen showed pressure. Low. Normal. His scar-lines did nothing. Recovery Girl waited ten seconds.
"Lift" He lifted.
"Again" He placed his fingers again. Nothing. Again. Nothing. Again. The skin warmed slightly from contact. Not Quirk. Just body. His frustration rose. Not much. Enough. Aizawa said "Stop trying to make it happen" Ren's jaw tightened.
"I am not""You are" Recovery Girl said "He is" Hana said "You are" Daichi said "A little" Shinso said "Loudly" Ren looked at him.
"With my hand?"
"With your entire tragic academic presence" Kurose said "Accurate" Ren closed his eyes.
"Hostile room" Recovery Girl removed his hand from the pad.
"Good. We stop for thirty seconds""I did not spike""You started converting observation into performance. We stop before your body mistakes your ego for an emergency" That hit. Ren looked away. Hana's hand did not move toward him this time. She let him sit with it. That helped. Worse. Aizawa spoke after the thirty seconds passed.
"Your Quirk did not appear because you wanted classification" Ren looked at him.
"It appeared because of hazard""Because of trapped body plus hazard plus stress""Yes""Then wanting it is noise" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" Aizawa's visible eye remained on him.
"Useful Quirks do not always answer want. They answer conditions" Shinso, quieter than before, said "Unfortunately" Ren looked at him. Brainwashing answered when someone responded verbally. Not when Shinso wanted people to stop fearing him. Not when he wanted the world fair. Conditions. Not want. Ren breathed. In. Hold. Out.
"Again?" Recovery Girl asked Ren looked at the rubber pad.
"No" Everyone paused. Recovery Girl's eyebrows rose.
"Explain""I am trying to activate. That is wrong. Ask me to do something ordinary" Aizawa's mouth twitched by less than a millimeter. Recovery Girl looked pleased in a way that threatened future suffering.
"Good" She replaced the rubber pad with the smooth plastic strip and set a small ball at the far end of it.
"Slide the ball toward you with two fingers. Slowly. Do not let it fall off the strip" Ren looked at the setup.
"That is childish" Recovery Girl smiled.
"Yes" He placed two fingers on the ball and began to pull. The plastic was slick. His fingers trembled. The ball drifted sideways. He corrected too fast. It fell off. Shinso said "Hero society trembles" Ren said "I am injured""Excuses from the fallen" Hana looked at Shinso. He lifted both hands.
"Morale" Daichi said "Strange morale""General Studies morale" Ren tried again. This time slower. The ball moved halfway down the strip before his fingers slipped. Not Quirk. Again. Again. On the fourth attempt, he stopped thinking about activation because annoyance had become more immediate than proof. The task was stupid. The ball was stupid. The plastic strip was offensively smooth. His right index finger trembled at the wrong moment, the ball slid sideways, and Ren focused on one simple requirement.
Do not let it fall. The skin of his fingertip tightened. Not visibly at first. A sensation like a thread pulling under the skin. A tiny line of heat across the pad of his index finger. The ball stopped slipping. The sensor chirped. Recovery Girl's hand rose.
"Stop" Ren froze. His fingertip held the ball against the plastic with almost no pressure. For one second, nothing in the room moved. Then the ball shifted. The sensation vanished. The ball rolled off the strip and dropped into Recovery Girl's waiting hand. Ren stared at his finger. The skin looked normal. Maybe slightly pale. Maybe imagination. His pulse had jumped. The monitor confirmed it. Recovery Girl looked at the sensor screen. Kurose was already typing. Aizawa straightened.
Hana covered her mouth with one hand. Daichi whispered "What happened?" Recovery Girl did not answer him yet. She looked at Ren.
"What did you feel?" Ren swallowed.
"Thread. Under fingertip. Heat. Small. Like tension. Not pain exactly. Not pleasant. Grip changed""Did you command it?"
"No""Did you want activation?"
"No. I wanted the ball not to fall" Aizawa said "Condition" Ren nodded.
"Task condition. Not proof condition" Recovery Girl smiled. This time there was no softness in it. Only dangerous satisfaction.
"There. That is the part we can train without killing you" The sentence entered the room and changed its shape. Ren looked at his hand again. Small. Ridiculously small. A fingertip had gripped a ball. No ice cracked. No crowd roared. No one was saved. No one clapped. His body had answered without needing disaster. The disappointment came first, because he was a worse person than he wanted to be. Then relief. Then fear. Then want. Again. Always want.
"Status" Kurose said Ren breathed.
"Pain unchanged. Scar heat local right index finger, now gone. Emotional spike. No spreading. No fever change perceived. Hungry" Hana made a sound that was almost a sob and almost a laugh. Recovery Girl nodded.
"Excellent final category" Daichi sat down slowly.
"His finger gripped better?"
"Yes" Recovery Girl said "For approximately one second, with no visible systemic activation. That is not combat. That is not proof of safety. That is not permission. That is not a technique yet" Ren whispered "But it is repeatable?" Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened.
"Do not reach" He stopped. She continued.
"It is potentially repeatable under controlled conditions after rest and with careful logging. The word potentially is carrying a lot of weight and will sue you if abused" Shinso said "Your Quirk has a lawyer now too" Kurose said "Several, if I have my way" Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Name" Ren stared at his finger. Scar Lattice had been the whole body making a net from old damage. This had been nothing like that. A single thread. A single tension line. A small response to a small need.
"Scar Tension" Recovery Girl typed it into her own notes.
"Provisional" Kurose typed the same. Aizawa nodded.
"Boring enough" Ren looked at him.
"Thank you?"
"Don't" Shinso leaned forward.
"Can he do it again?" Every adult in the room said "No" at once. Shinso sat back.
"Good safety culture" Ren looked at Recovery Girl.
"Not once?"
"No""Scientifically""No""Baseline comparison""No""Data reliability" Recovery Girl leaned closer.
"Akiyama" He closed his mouth. She smiled.
"Good" Aizawa pushed away from the wall.
"Observation concluded" Ren's disappointment returned. This time he recognized it before it became argument. He did not ask again. Recovery Girl noticed.
"Better" Ren looked away.
"I dislike being rewarded for not being foolish""You will survive the discomfort" Shinso said "Personal growth is ugly to watch" Hana looked at him.
"You are next" He blinked.
"What?" Aizawa looked at Shinso. The room changed focus with surgical precision. Shinso's posture straightened.
"No" Aizawa said "Yes""This was Akiyama's medical thing""Now it is over""I am not medically interesting" Recovery Girl said "Lucky boy" Aizawa took a capture weapon strip from somewhere beneath his coat. Ren had not seen him bring it. Of course he had. He tossed the strip lightly toward Shinso. Shinso caught it badly. Not terribly. Badly. Aizawa said "That is the problem" Shinso stared at the cloth.
"The problem is catching?"
"The problem is you have one opening move and no second plan with your body" Shinso's face closed.
"My Quirk works""Yes""It worked at USJ""Yes""It almost worked on Midoriya""Yes" Aizawa's voice did not change.
"And when it failed, you had to wrestle a stronger opponent with worse physical options" Shinso's fingers tightened around the cloth. Ren watched him. Not pity. Recognition. Shinso said "So I'm weak" Aizawa said "You are untrained" The difference landed harder than comfort would have. Shinso looked down at the cloth. Aizawa continued.
"Your Quirk is not villainous. It is not heroic either. It is a tool. Your choices matter. Your conditioning matters. Your body matters. You want the Hero Course? You need a second answer" Shinso swallowed.
"Are you offering training?" Aizawa's expression stayed flat.
"I am informing you of future inconvenience" Kurose said "That remains Eraser Head for yes" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren said nothing. This was not his moment to interpret. Shinso looked at Hana. She smiled gently and said nothing. That was worse. He looked at Daichi. Daichi gave him a small nod. Not pressure. A place to put his eyes. Shinso looked back at Aizawa.
"What kind of training?"
"Movement. Capture weapon basics eventually. Strength. Falling. Grip. Silence discipline. How not to answer obvious bait. How not to look like a kicked dog when someone says villain" Shinso's face went red under the eyes.
"That last one is not physical training""It affects your face. Your face affects fights" Ren whispered "Medically expressive" Shinso pointed at him.
"You are not allowed to use my suffering as callback" Recovery Girl said "Both of you stop enjoying being patients""I am not a patient" Shinso said"Everyone in my room is a patient until proven useful" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Tomorrow. Not today. You competed yesterday. You eat and sleep first" Shinso's mouth twisted.
"Everyone keeps attaching food to opportunity" Hana said "Good opportunities do not require starvation" The sentence hit Ren too. Hana did not look away from Shinso. He looked at the capture weapon strip in his hands. Then nodded once. Small. Real.
"Okay" Aizawa turned to leave. At the door, he looked back at Ren.
"You too. Tomorrow is not training. It is recovery" Ren said "Yes, sir""Day after tomorrow is also recovery" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes, sir""Good" Shinso muttered "He weaponized the word" Aizawa left. Kurose followed him after collecting copies of the observation notes. Recovery Girl stayed, because no god had yet been invented with enough authority to remove her from an active patient. Shinso remained seated with the strip of capture weapon cloth across his lap. He looked at it like it had become a future and a threat. Ren looked at his right index finger. It looked normal. Too normal. One second. One stupid plastic ball.
One small thread under skin. Scar Tension. Not heroic. Not beautiful. Not expensive enough to be celebrated. Maybe that was why it felt more dangerous. If the big miracle nearly killed him, everyone could say no. If the small answer helped, everyone would have to decide what yes meant. Hana touched the side table near his hand. Not his hand. Near.
"You are thinking loudly" Ren stared at his finger.
"It was small""Yes""Very small""Yes""I wanted more""I know""I am relieved it was small""I know""I hate that I am relieved""I know" Daichi leaned back.
"Most good news arrives mixed" Hana looked at him.
"That is usually my line""I married into licensing rights" Ren almost laughed. Stopped. No rib warning this time because he stopped early enough. Recovery Girl saw.
"Better" Ren did not look away from his hand.
"Boring progress""Yes" Recovery Girl said"Useful progress""Yes" Shinso said "Annoying progress" Ren looked at him. Shinso held up the capture weapon strip.
"Contagious progress" Ren's mouth twitched. He let it stay small. A small smile. Not enough to hurt. Not enough to perform. Just enough to exist. The monitor remained steady. Recovery Girl saw that too. For once, she did not comment. Outside the infirmary, the festival grounds were being cleaned. Banners would come down. Commentators would go home. Clips would continue moving through phones and screens and articles and arguments. People would name things they had not earned the right to understand. U. A.
would write careful records and still fail in ways no record could prevent. Somewhere, Todoroki would be deciding what second place meant when he had not fought fully and had fought more than before. Somewhere, Bakugo would be furious at a victory that felt stolen by refusal. Somewhere, Izuku would stare at broken fingers and learn again that changing someone was not the same as surviving unchanged. Somewhere, All Might's note existed in a plastic sleeve, the Symbol of Peace learning to put warning beside praise.
And in a medical room too small for the size of what had begun there, Ren Akiyama looked at one ordinary finger that had gripped one ordinary ball for one ordinary second. His body had answered a small need. No one clapped. Good. For the first time since the ice, that word felt almost clean.
