Chương 53: Allowed to Say Yes

Midoriya Izuku asked to speak with Ren through the correct channels. That was new enough to count as growth. The request did not arrive as a frantic hallway ambush, a text message with too many apologies, or a trembling figure appearing at the edge of Ren's lunch table with the expression of someone carrying a moral disaster in both hands.
It arrived through Kurose, who read it aloud after class with the same tone she used for weather warnings, agency disclosures, and Sano's attempts to classify dramatic entrances as morale support.
"Midoriya Izuku has requested a supervised conversation with you" Ren looked up from his notebook. Shinso, seated beside him, also looked up. Sano stopped mid-sentence across the room, sensed the atmosphere, and lowered his hand without being told. Kurose continued.
"He requested it through his homeroom teacher, who routed it through Recovery Girl because of medical restrictions, then through me because of protocol. He included a topic summary" Shinso leaned back.
"That sounds like Midoriya suffering in paperwork form" Kurose looked at him.
"It was a very thorough topic summary""Of course it was" Ren closed his notebook.
"What topics?" Kurose checked the tablet.
"Apology regarding public use of your match during his match with Todoroki. Clarification of intent. Concern about your medical condition. Desire to discuss restraint training and the phrase not a model" Ren's right index finger pressed lightly into the desk. No thread. No heat. No need.
"He wrote not a model?"
"Yes" The phrase from All Might's note had traveled. Good. Dangerous. Both. Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Do you want me to stay?" Ren looked at him. The question was too casual to be casual.
"No" Shinso's eyes shifted. Ren added "Not because you are excluded. Because this is between me and Midoriya" Shinso looked away.
"Obvious""Say it like you know" Shinso glared at him. Kurose made a small approving sound. Shinso's glare moved to her.
"I know""Better" Kurose said Sano whispered "Everyone is becoming teachers and I feel unsafe" Kenta said "You were unsafe before" Arai nodded. Sano looked wounded. Ren looked back to Kurose.
"Conditions?"
"Fifteen minutes. Quiet recovery room. No training. No Quirk discussion beyond agreed boundaries. No replay description. No apology spiral. Either of you may end it. I will remain outside. Recovery Girl has approved it after lunch, assuming you eat" Ren looked at the lunch schedule taped inside his folder. Hana's handwriting had become school policy in miniature.
"I will eat" Shinso muttered "Opportunity has calories" Ren said "Your training has breakfast rules""Your family is a contagion" Kurose said "A useful one" That ended the discussion. Lunch came before the meeting because apparently everyone had agreed that meaningful emotional exchange without calories was a form of negligence. Ren ate under the combined surveillance of Kenta, Arai, Shinso, and a message from Hana asking whether he had finished the rice.
Sano attempted to declare the table an emotional nutrition zone and was removed from naming authority by unanimous vote. Midoriya did not approach during lunch. That mattered. He sat with Uraraka, Iida, and Todoroki at a nearby table. His fingers were bandaged neatly, splinted beneath light support. He ate with visible concentration, as if chopsticks had become another training exercise and the rice bowl was a moral exam. Once, he looked over. Ren met his eyes. Midoriya flinched, then did not come. Good.
Progress looked like someone respecting a boundary and suffering visibly about it from twenty meters away. After lunch, Ren walked to recovery room three with Kurose beside him. His ribs were less painful than before, but the left shoulder still objected to the weight of his bag, so Kurose had taken the bag after a thirty-second argument she won by saying medical compliance in a tone that made refusal sound like civic decay. Midoriya was already waiting outside the door. He stood too straight.
His bandaged hands hung at his sides. All Might was not with him. Good. This did not need the Symbol in the room. Midoriya bowed too quickly when he saw Ren.
"Akiyama" Ren looked at him.
"Midoriya" Kurose opened the door.
"Inside. Both of you" The recovery room was small, with two chairs, a low table, a water pitcher, and a wall clock visible from every seat because Recovery Girl believed time limits should intimidate people directly. A small monitor sat on the table for remote medical observation, but the screen was off. Kurose placed Ren's bag by the wall and remained at the doorway.
"Fifteen minutes. I am outside. If either of you starts trying to save the other from discomfort, I will enter" Midoriya swallowed.
"Yes ma'am" Ren nodded. Kurose closed the door. The room became quiet. Midoriya looked at the chair. Ren sat first because standing too long to prove psychological dominance would be exactly the type of stupidity Recovery Girl documented. Midoriya sat opposite him. For three seconds, neither spoke. Midoriya broke first.
"I'm sorry" Ren closed his eyes. Midoriya stopped. If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it. Apparently he had learned to fear that reaction. Good. Ren opened his eyes.
"One sentence only. Then explain what you mean" Midoriya nodded rapidly.
"I'm sorry I used your match as part of my argument against Todoroki without asking you" Better. Specific. Not sufficient.
"Intent?" Ren asked Midoriya gripped his knees carefully with bandaged fingers, then let go when pain reminded him that gripping was also movement.
"I was trying to make him see that refusing his left side was not control. I thought your match showed that. Your choice showed that his ice had consequences beyond him. I wasn't trying to make you a symbol, but I did use what happened to you in public, and I did not ask" Ren listened. No apology spiral yet. Good.
"What did you want from saying it?" Ren asked Midoriya looked startled.
"To reach him""Only that?" Midoriya looked down.
"No" Good. Ren waited. Midoriya's voice lowered.
"I wanted to prove I understood what your match meant" Ren's right index finger pressed against his knee. No heat.
"Why?"
"Because I was angry""At Todoroki?"
"At him. At myself. At the way everyone kept acting like winning was the only thing being measured. At the way you lost but made the more heroic choice. At the fact that I won my first match and still felt like Shinso had exposed something ugly in me. At the fact that you were in the infirmary and the tournament kept going" Ren looked at him. Midoriya's words came faster, but not uncontrolled yet.
"I wanted Todoroki to understand. I wanted the crowd to understand. I wanted myself to understand. That was too many wants for one sentence" Ren breathed.
"Yes" Midoriya winced.
"But relevant" Ren said Midoriya looked up.
"The argument was relevant. Consent was missing" Midoriya nodded.
"Yes""Do not make the guilt larger than the action""I'm trying""I know" That sentence landed strangely between them. Midoriya looked at his hands.
"I don't know how to apologize without trying to make the apology big enough to cover the damage" Ren looked at the bandages.
"That is because you think if you feel guilty enough, you become less responsible" Midoriya flinched. Ren continued.
"You do not do it on purpose""That does not make it better""No. But it makes it trainable" Midoriya stared. Then, very slowly, he nodded.
"Trainable""Yes" Ren leaned back carefully.
"Guilt is not repair. It is information. Use it, then act" Midoriya's face shifted with the familiar dangerous light of someone discovering a sentence he could turn into a notebook page, a training plan, and possibly a spiritual crisis. Ren pointed at him.
"Do not worship that sentence" Midoriya froze.
"I wasn't""You were about to""I was going to write it down""That can be the same thing with you" Midoriya flushed. Fair. The clock ticked. Five minutes had passed. Ren decided to cut toward the thing both of them were orbiting.
"You broke your fingers" Midoriya looked down.
"Yes""Less than before""Yes""Still broken""Yes""Did All Might praise the control first?" Midoriya's head snapped up.
"He told you?"
"No. He told me he told you""Oh" Midoriya's shoulders lowered.
"Yes. He praised the control first. Then he told me the broken fingers were not tuition" Ren let the phrase settle. Good. All Might had used it. Midoriya stared at the table.
"I still felt proud""Of changing Todoroki?"
"Yes""Of the damage?" Midoriya's answer came slower.
"Some part of me thought the broken fingers proved I had gone far enough" Ren nodded. There it was. The shared disease wearing different clothes.
"My body did a miracle when I was half-trapped in ice" Ren said "Part of me thinks the cost proves the miracle was real" Midoriya looked at him with open pain.
"That's not""I know""But it feels""Yes" Silence. Not comfortable. Useful. Midoriya said "All Might said reaching Todoroki did not require paying with bone, even if I believed that was the only coin I had in the moment" Ren's throat tightened.
"He practiced that one" Midoriya gave a small, startled laugh. Then immediately looked guilty for laughing. Ren said "Allowed" Midoriya smiled faintly. It vanished quickly.
"He's changing""Yes""Because of you" Ren's expression sharpened. Midoriya corrected quickly.
"Not only because of you. I know. But you said things to him that made him see something he had missed""Do not make me his conscience""I'm not""You are tempted" Midoriya swallowed.
"Yes" Ren appreciated the honesty. Hated the need for it.
"I am not the person who should have inherited responsibility for making All Might healthier" Midoriya went still. The word inherited sat too close to power. Too close to secrets. Ren did not look away. Midoriya's voice came carefully.
"I know""Do you?" Midoriya's bandaged fingers twitched. Ren lowered his voice.
"I am not asking for names" Midoriya looked at the door. Then at Ren. Ren continued.
"I am asking about shape. Not secret" Midoriya's breathing changed. He nodded once.
"Okay" Ren chose each word.
"You received something from him" Midoriya did not answer. He did not need to. Ren continued.
"You chose it?" Midoriya closed his eyes.
"Yes""Before knowing the full cost?"
"Yes""Could you say no?" Midoriya opened his eyes. The answer mattered to him.
"Yes" Ren watched him.
"Say that again" Midoriya looked confused.
"I could say no""Again" Midoriya's voice became quieter.
"I was allowed to say no" The room shifted. Not because the sentence revealed the secret. Because it defined the moral difference around it. Ren nodded slowly.
"And you were allowed to say yes" Midoriya's eyes shone.
"Yes""Good" The word did not feel clean here. It felt necessary. Midoriya looked down at his hands.
"I didn't understand what yes would cost""No one does fully""That doesn't excuse""No""But it matters?"
"Yes" Midoriya swallowed. Ren looked at the water pitcher. He did not drink. Instead he said "The difference between gift and violation begins with whether you were allowed to say yes" Midoriya stared at him. Something in the room went colder. Not from Quirk. Not from memory exactly. Ren did not know why the sentence felt heavier than the conversation required. A pressure moved behind his eyes. A dark room. A file. A gloved hand. Not clear. Gone before it became image. His pulse rose. Midoriya noticed.
"Akiyama?" Ren breathed.
"Yellow. Brief threat association. No clear fragment. Resolved" The door opened instantly. Kurose stood there.
"Continue?" Ren looked at her.
"Yes. Two more minutes" She looked at Midoriya. He looked terrified that his existence had caused a medical event. Kurose said "Do not make that face larger" He straightened.
"Yes ma'am" She closed the door again. Midoriya whispered "I'm sorry" Ren looked at him. Midoriya stopped himself.
"Information. Not repair""Better" Midoriya nodded like he had been given a live grenade and told it was educational. Ren returned to the point before it could grow teeth.
"You sometimes act like being chosen means you must justify the choice with damage" Midoriya's eyes lowered.
"Yes""Do not""I'm trying""You being chosen did not steal my years" Midoriya went completely still. Ren had not planned to say it. Apparently the sentence had been waiting anyway. Midoriya's face crumpled before he caught it. Ren continued because stopping now would make it worse.
"It did not steal Shinso's years either. Or Todoroki's. Or Bakugo's. Or anyone else's. Your opportunity can be unfair without making you a thief" Midoriya's voice broke.
"It feels like I took someone else's place""Yes""I was Quirkless""Yes""You were still fighting""Yes""You knew so much""Yes""All Might could have" Ren's voice cut in.
"No" Midoriya stopped. Ren's ribs hurt because his breath had gone too sharp. He controlled it.
"All Might choosing differently in another world is not evidence in this one" Midoriya stared. Ren continued.
"Do not turn me into the punishment for your yes" Midoriya's eyes filled. He nodded once. Then again.
"I don't want to""Then stop when you start""How?"
"Name it" Midoriya wiped one eye with the back of his wrist, careful of bandages.
"Guilt trying to become debt?" Ren considered.
"Good" Midoriya made a broken sound that might have been a laugh.
"The word again""Yes" The clock clicked toward the end. Ren looked at him.
"My turn" Midoriya blinked.
"What?"
"I am angry that you have a power I wanted the world to prove I did not need" Midoriya looked wounded. Good. Ren kept going.
"I am angry that you were Quirkless and then not, because it makes an old part of me feel abandoned by the category we shared" Midoriya's mouth parted. Ren's voice remained steady.
"I am angry that you can break less and still learn faster than I can safely train. I am angry that All Might's attention on you makes sense. I am angry that I do not hate you" Midoriya stared. Ren breathed. In. Hold. Out.
"I am telling you because if I hide it, I will turn it into philosophy and call myself mature" Silence. Then Midoriya whispered "Thank you" Ren closed his eyes. Accepted. He opened them. Midoriya's face had changed. Still hurt. Less confused.
"I'm envious of you too" Midoriya said Ren blinked.
"That is irrational""Yes""Explain" Midoriya looked at his bandaged hands.
"You built so much before anyone gave you permission. You made people see with almost nothing. You know how to think when you're scared. You say things that make adults stop. You can look at a system and name what it is doing wrong" Ren stared at him. Midoriya continued.
"I know your way hurts. I know I shouldn't envy it. But sometimes I do because I feel like without the power I would still be standing on a beach waiting to become possible" Ren did not answer. He had no immediate weapon against that kind of honesty. Midoriya looked up.
"I'm telling you because if I hide it, I'll turn it into admiration and call myself kind" Ren's mouth twitched.
"That was mine""I adapted it""Plagiarism""Sorry" Ren looked at him. Midoriya corrected.
"Thank you?"
"Not applicable""Right" The door opened again. Kurose looked at the clock.
"Time" Neither boy moved immediately. Kurose's gaze took in their faces.
"Status" Ren answered first.
"Yellow. Stable. No scar heat. Emotional fatigue" Midoriya answered after him.
"Yellow? Is that allowed for me?" Kurose considered.
"For today" Midoriya nodded seriously.
"Yellow. Stable. Guilty but not spiraling. Fingers hurt because I forgot not to grip my knees" Kurose looked at Ren. Ren said "Good report" Midoriya smiled weakly. Kurose looked heavenward for patience.
"Both of you out" They stood. Midoriya moved toward the door, then stopped.
"Akiyama" Ren looked at him.
"I won't use you as punishment for my yes" Ren held his gaze.
"I will try not to use you as proof my no was stolen" Midoriya nodded. The agreement did not feel like friendship exactly. It felt like placing two dangerous tools on the table and agreeing not to pretend they were harmless. Outside the room, Shinso waited against the wall. He looked up when they emerged. Midoriya froze slightly. Shinso looked at him.
"Did you apologize with structural integrity?" Midoriya blinked.
"I think so?" Shinso looked at Ren. Ren said "Mostly""Miracle" Midoriya bowed.
"Shinso, I also wanted to say""No" Midoriya stopped. Shinso pushed off the wall.
"Not now. You get one emotional renovation per day" Ren looked at him.
"Renovation?"
"His face looks like a building where walls got moved" Kurose said "Disturbingly accurate" Midoriya looked as if he might write it down. Shinso pointed at him.
"Do not" Midoriya lowered his hand, which had already twitched toward a notebook he was not carrying. Ren almost smiled. Safe. Barely. Kurose escorted them back toward the main hall. Midoriya split off toward the medical wing for his hand check. Before turning the corner, he looked back once. Not apology. Not debt. A promise under construction. Ren nodded. Midoriya nodded back. Then went. Shinso walked beside Ren in silence for several steps. Finally he said "You look tired""I am""Did he make it worse?"
"Yes""Did he make it better?"
"Yes""Both?"
"Yes" Shinso sighed.
"I walked into that" Ren said "You usually do" They reached the window overlooking the training grounds. Students crossed below in late afternoon light. Somewhere, All Might was probably trying to praise restraint loudly enough for a boy with broken fingers to hear before the damage did. Somewhere, Aizawa was preparing to make Shinso fall better. Somewhere, Recovery Girl had likely sensed a patient considering bad decisions and was turning in that direction like weather. Ren looked down at his right hand.
No thread. No tension. He did not need it. Not for this. He opened his notebook when they returned to 1-C and wrote: Gift begins where yes is allowed. Then: Do not make Midoriya punishment for being chosen. Then, after a long pause: Do not make myself punishment for not being chosen. The last sentence took the longest to write. Shinso glanced at the page and did not comment. Friendship. Definitely. At the next desk, Shinso opened his own notebook. Ren did not look. For once, he did not need to.
