The bus doors opened, and Ren Akiyama stepped out beneath the shadow of a memory. The Unforeseen Simulation Joint rose ahead of them in a vast curve of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete, enormous enough that the morning sunlight slid across its surface without softening it. From the outside, it looked almost serene, a dome built to contain catastrophe and make it educational. The name was printed near the entrance in clean block letters beside U. A.'
s emblem, official and harmless in the way institutions named dangerous things so people would not notice they had done it. USJ. Ren had written those letters before he knew what they stood for. At six, he had built this place out of blocks. At eight, he had drawn it in the margins of notebooks and then torn the pages out because the zones made his hands cold. At twelve, he had filed the fragments under unreliable data. At fifteen, he stood before the real structure in a U. A.
uniform, assigned as a simulated civilian, with a sealed role card in his pocket and a scar prickling under his sleeve. The air was clear. No storm. No warning sirens. No obvious crack in the world. That made it worse. Class 1-C gathered beside their bus under Kurose's supervision. The other General Studies teacher, a broad man named Okamoto, checked attendance with a tablet while two U. A. staff members in dark uniforms stood near the entrance road. Their presence was not unusual. Their placement was.
Ren noticed one near the path from the parking area. Another near the service gate. A third on the upper exterior walkway. More than expected. Kurose had reported something. Or U. A. had increased security because of standard protocol. Or both. A useful change. Not enough. Shinso stood beside Ren with his hands in his pockets, eyes half-lidded, shoulders loose in a way that did not quite hide the tension in his jaw.
"You're counting guards" Ren did not look at him.
"Yes""How many?"
"Visible? Five. Likely more inside""Enough?"
"No" Shinso exhaled through his nose.
"You always answer like that?"
"When the answer is no" Across the parking area, Class 1-A spilled from their own bus with far more noise. They looked different outside a classroom. Not better. Not exactly. But more immediate. Hero Course students wore expectation in their posture even when nervous. Some moved like they had been waiting all week to do something real. Others stared up at the dome with wide eyes and open awe. A few tried to hide fear under jokes, excitement, irritation, or volume.
Izuku Midoriya stepped down carefully from the bus, one hand near his right arm as if the memory of breaking it had remained inside the joints. Uraraka followed close behind, smiling at something he said badly enough that Ren assumed he had not meant to say it. Iida immediately began organizing people who had not asked to be organized. Bakugo jumped down from the bus with a scowl that made the clean morning seem personally offensive.
Todoroki descended last, silent and self-contained, half-white hair catching the light like frost. Aizawa stood in front of them with a sleeping bag rolled under one arm and the expression of a man who had already regretted becoming responsible for children. Thirteen waited near the entrance. Their rescue suit caught the sunlight, round and white, the helmet reflecting the dome behind them. Ren had researched them extensively. Space-related Quirk. Rescue specialist. Public reputation strong.
Instructional tone gentle but serious. Dangerous capacity contained by ethics and control. A person whose Quirk could erase things and had chosen rescue. Ren liked that in theory. Today, theory had teeth. Kurose called Class 1-C to attention.
"Final reminder. You are here as simulated civilians. You will not break role without cause. You will not interfere with Heroics instruction. You will not try to impress Class 1-A. You will not improvise injuries, disasters, villain attacks, personal speeches, transfer auditions, or tragic backstories" Yabara raised a hand. Kurose looked at him.
"No""I didn't ask yet""You were going to ask whether tragic backstories already possessed by students count as improvisation" Yabara lowered his hand. Several students laughed. Kurose did not.
"If an actual emergency occurs, roleplay ends. You follow faculty and staff instructions. If faculty are unavailable, you prioritize evacuation, grouping, and communication. You do not attempt heroics unless failure to act would create immediate harm and no safer option exists" Her gaze stopped on Ren. Not long. Long enough. Ren nodded once. Shinso noticed. Of course. Aizawa's voice reached them from the other side.
"Class 1-A. Stop looking around like tourists and move" Kaminari made a sound of complaint. Ashido said something bright. Iida chopped the air. Bakugo muttered. Aizawa ignored all of it with professional efficiency. The two classes approached the USJ entrance separately, but the paths converged at the doors. That meant General Studies and Hero Course students stood together for a brief moment beneath the facility's name. Ren felt the shape of the moment immediately. Hero Course students in front.
General Studies behind. Not by rule. By gravity. Shinso saw it too. His mouth curved faintly.
"Natural sorting" Ren said "Habit pretending to be order""Same thing?"
"No""Close enough?"
"Dangerously" Izuku turned at the sound of Ren's voice. His face brightened, then tightened, then attempted a neutral expression and failed.
"Ren""Midoriya" Uraraka waved from beside him.
"Hi, Akiyama. Hi, Shinso" Shinso looked faintly surprised she remembered his name.
"Uraraka" Iida stepped closer.
"Good morning. I hope your civilian role participation will contribute meaningfully to our rescue education" Support the creativity of authors by visiting Royal Road for this novel and more. Shinso stared.
"Do you practice sounding like a brochure?" Iida stiffened. Uraraka made a tiny noise. Izuku whispered "Shinso" Ren said "He does not practice. It is likely natural""That was not better" Izuku said Iida adjusted his glasses with great dignity.
"I will interpret that as an observation rather than an insult""Good choice" Shinso said Bakugo looked back from ahead.
"You extras done flirting with paperwork?" Ren turned his head.
"That sentence is less structurally weak than your previous attempts" Bakugo's eye twitched.
"Don't review my insults""Then improve independently" Aizawa's capture weapon flicked lightly through the air and snapped against the ground between the groups. The sound was quiet. Everyone stopped. Aizawa looked at them without visible emotion.
"If you have enough energy to socialize, you have enough energy to waste. Don't" Bakugo clicked his tongue. Ren looked at the capture weapon. Range. Control. Sound minimal. Precision high. Aizawa's eyes shifted to him.
"General Studies student""Akiyama Ren""I know" Ren stilled. Aizawa's expression did not change.
"Observe if that's your role. Don't interfere unless instructed""Yes" Aizawa held his gaze for one second longer. Then turned away. Shinso murmured "He knows you" Ren said "Apparently""Bad?"
"Unknown""Your favorite" Ren did not answer. The entrance doors opened. Inside, USJ expanded beyond the scale the exterior had promised. The first view was the central plaza, a broad circular platform beneath the dome's high ceiling.
Walkways branched outward like spokes toward different disaster zones, each environment visible in pieces through distance and artificial atmosphere: a flood zone with still water and half-submerged structures, a fire zone filled with controlled heat shimmer and fire-resistant architecture, a landslide zone of tilted rock and broken terrain, a mountain zone rising under simulated cliffs, a storm zone with wind generators dormant for now, and a ruins zone built from collapsed walls, fractured streets, and unstable-looking structures designed to fail safely.
Designed. That word did no work here. Ren stood at the entrance and felt his body remember a place it had never been. The central stairs. The open plaza. The distant water. The zones like separated wounds. The dome above. The place where black fog would open. His scar prickled again. Shinso's voice came low beside him.
"You're doing the thing""What thing?"
"Looking like the building insulted your ancestors" Ren breathed out slowly.
"Layout matches""Your pattern?"
"Yes""How much?"
"Too much" Shinso's eyes sharpened. Before he could answer, Thirteen raised one padded hand.
"Welcome to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint" Their voice carried through the space with warm clarity, amplified but not harsh. The sound settled over both classes, drawing attention without forcing it.
"This facility was built to train heroes for rescue operations under a wide range of disaster conditions. Floods, fires, landslides, storms, collapsed urban environments, and unstable evacuation scenarios can be simulated here under controlled supervision" Controlled. Ren looked toward the upper observation points. Cameras. Speakers. Emergency lights. Reinforced shutters. Where were the staff? Too few visible. Maybe behind glass. Maybe remote. Maybe enough. Maybe not. Thirteen continued.
"Your Quirks are powerful. Many of you have spent your lives being told that power is what makes you special. Today, I want you to remember something else. A Quirk can harm as easily as it can help. Strength without judgment becomes another disaster. Rescue begins when you understand that the person in front of you is not scenery" Ren stopped breathing for half a second. Civilians are not empty space. Kurose's words. Thirteen's words. Same truth. Different department.
"Class 1-A, you will be working through guided rescue scenarios with civilian variables provided by General Studies volunteers. These volunteers are not obstacles for your convenience. Treat them as people. Ask questions. Give clear instructions. Check mobility before moving someone. Do not assume silence means consent, panic means stupidity, or compliance means safety" Ren glanced at Kurose. She stood with arms folded, face unreadable. Had she influenced this briefing?
Or did competent rescue teachers simply say competent things? Both possible. Thirteen's helmet turned slightly toward Class 1-C.
"Class 1-C, thank you for participating. Your role matters. Real civilians are frightened, confused, injured, angry, unhelpful, brave, stubborn, quiet, loud, and everything between. Your job is to help these students understand that rescue is not performed on empty space. It is performed with people" Several 1-C students stood straighter. Sano looked less irritated. Arai nodded to herself. Shinso's expression did not change, but his hands shifted in his pockets. Ren looked toward Izuku.
Izuku was staring at Thirteen with the expression of someone having a belief refined rather than created. Good. Dangerous. Aizawa stood off to the side, eyes moving between students. Bored on the surface. Watching beneath. Ren noted the absence again. All Might was not here. Not late in a normal way. Absent. The pattern tightened. Thirteen finished the initial safety explanation and gestured toward the General Studies staff.
"Class 1-C will be placed first. Class 1-A will begin when all civilian roles are active and staff confirms zone readiness" Okamoto began calling groups. Students split according to role cards. Sano to the landslide zone as a trapped heavy civilian with limited cooperation. Arai to the storm zone as a frightened witness with sensory overload. Yabara to the flood zone as a noncompliant civilian refusing evacuation because of a fictional missing sibling. Morita to the fire zone as a calm but misleading observer.
Shinso to central plaza transition. Ren to ruins zone initial placement. Shinso looked at Ren.
"See you after?"
"Maybe""That's comforting""It was not meant to be""Obviously" Shinso held his gaze for a second. Then said quietly "If your pattern starts becoming less maybe?"
"I'll move""Toward?" Ren thought of Hana. Move. Not toward danger. Away if you can. With people if you must.
"Correctly" he said Shinso looked unimpressed.
"That answer sucked""Yes" Then he walked toward his assigned staff member. Ren watched him go. Purple hair. Slouched shoulders. Hands in pockets. A boy whose Quirk had been useless against robots and might be terrifyingly useful if the day became real. A staff member approached Ren.
"Akiyama?"
"Yes""Ruins Zone. You're with Group R-2. Minor mobility limitation, disoriented observer. You've read the card?"
"Yes""Good. You'll be placed near a partial facade collapse. Stay within marked boundaries. If a Hero Course student asks what happened, provide incomplete information unless they ask clear follow-up questions. If they give safe instructions, comply gradually. Do not self-evacuate unless staff signals or conditions change" Conditions change. Ren looked at him.
"If actual emergency occurs?"
"Roleplay ends. Follow staff evacuation orders""Primary evacuation route from ruins zone?" The staff member blinked.
"Marked green lights along the west corridor""Secondary?"
"East service path, staff only""Tertiary if blocked?" Now the staff member looked toward Kurose. Kurose, without turning, said "Answer him" The staff member hesitated.
"North maintenance passage behind the collapsed office structure. It should not be needed" Nothing that should not be needed ever comforted Ren.
"Communication points?"
"Zone speakers and emergency wall panels. Staff carry radios""Are radios on an isolated network?" The staff member's expression tightened.
"That is beyond your role" Ren nodded.
"Understood" The man looked as if he wanted to say more, decided against it, and gestured for Ren to follow. They entered the ruins zone through a side walkway. The environment changed immediately. The central plaza's open air gave way to broken vertical lines, artificial dust scent, cracked pavement, tilted concrete panels, exposed rebar made from safe composite, shattered window frames, half-collapsed stairways, and narrow gaps between structures that created blind spots every few meters.
The ceiling above remained the dome, but the zone lighting simulated partial obstruction, casting long shadows under fallen facades. Good training design. Terrible emergency design. Ren mapped. Entry from central plaza: broad but exposed. West corridor: marked green evacuation lights. East service path: staff door, partially hidden behind a collapsed bus prop. North maintenance passage: behind office facade, narrow, likely locked unless emergency override.
Vertical hazards: unstable-looking walls, probably sensor-monitored. Line of sight: poor. Sound distortion: moderate due to surfaces. Cameras: visible at corners, two overhead, one damaged-looking but likely functional. A real villain could hide here easily. A real civilian could die here quietly. The staff member led Ren to a collapsed storefront near the mid-zone. A foam-concrete slab leaned beside a half-buried doorway. A yellow boundary line marked the area where Ren was permitted to move during the simulation.
Another 1-C student, Morishita Kenta, had been placed farther down the street as a panicked civilian with simulated leg pain. Two mannequins represented unconscious civilians under debris. A third student Ren did not know well sat near a cracked wall, reading her role card with visible anxiety. The staff member pointed.
"You begin there. Sitting. You saw a collapse and are confused. You have minor difficulty walking. When rescued, favor your left leg. Do not run unless emergency is declared" Ren looked at the boundary. Too restrictive if real. Useful if simulation. Deadly if people obeyed too long.
"Yes" The staff member's radio crackled. He touched it.
"Ruins R-2 placement active" A voice answered with static beneath it.
"Copy. Stand by for full readiness" The static lasted half a second too long. Ren looked at the radio. The staff member did not notice or pretended not to.
"Remember, Akiyama. Stay in role" Ren sat beside the tilted slab. The artificial concrete was cool through his uniform. His left leg extended slightly to support the role. He placed one hand on the ground, arranged his posture as disoriented but not dramatically injured, and looked around through the eyes of someone who might need rescue. The perspective changed things. From standing, the ruins zone was a map. From the ground, it was walls. Sightline reduced. Exits less obvious.
The green lights were partially hidden by a collapsed sign. The staff door disappeared behind debris. The mannequins looked uncomfortably like bodies. Civilians were not empty space. They were people sitting too low to see the plan. Ren breathed. In. Out. Again. His scar prickled. No heat. No cold. The staff member moved to the zone edge. Other placements confirmed over radio. Storm active. Flood active. Fire active. Landslide active. Central transition active. Ruins active. Class 1-A ready.
Thirteen's voice came through the facility speakers.
"Civilian placements confirmed. Hero Course rescue exercise will begin shortly" A pause. Then Aizawa's voice, lower, flatter.
"Class 1-A. This is rescue training. Treat it seriously. Anyone who grandstands fails my evaluation even if they technically complete the objective" Bakugo's distant voice was not amplified, but somehow still audible enough to sound offended. Ren almost smiled. Almost. Thirteen continued "You will enter in teams assigned by your instructor. Remember to assess before acting. Rescue is not a race unless delay creates danger" Delay created danger now. Maybe. Probably. Ren scanned the ruins zone again.
Kenta gave him a nervous thumbs-up from farther down. Ren returned a smaller one. The girl near the cracked wall whispered "This feels creepy" Ren looked at her.
"Good" She stared.
"That was not comforting""Creepy means you are paying attention""Oh" She looked around again. Better. A faint vibration passed through the floor. Ren froze. Not the normal hum of the facility. Different. Low. External? Internal? The staff member at the zone edge touched his radio.
"Central, did we begin environmental systems?" Static. Then "Negative. Stand by" Ren slowly turned toward the central plaza. His line of sight was mostly blocked, but he could see a narrow slice of open space between two broken building props. The air there looked wrong. At first, it was only a darkening. A bruise in the center of the light. Then the darkness turned. Not smoke. Not shadow. Fog. Black and purple, spiraling inward and outward at once, as if space had been punctured and was bleeding night.
Ren's body knew before thought completed. Kurogiri. A shape emerged within the vortex. Tall. Dark. Mist-wrapped. Gold eyes like warning lights. The radio erupted in static. The staff member turned fully toward the plaza.
"What the" The speakers crackled. Aizawa's voice cut through the facility.
"Stay together! Thirteen, protect the students!" That was not roleplay voice. That was command. The girl near the cracked wall stood.
"Is that part of it?" Ren stood too. His role card said minor mobility limitation. His mother had said move. His teacher had said if actual emergency occurs, roleplay ends. His body said wrong. His memory said now. From the central plaza came the first scream. Not simulated. Ren looked at the boundary line painted on the floor. For one second, years of rules collided. Stay in role. Do not self-evacuate. Follow staff. Look first. Move. Survive clearly. The black fog expanded across the central plaza.
Villains began stepping through. Dozens. More than the facility should hold. The staff member grabbed his radio.
"Emergency! Intrusion at central" The radio screamed static and died. Ren turned to the other 1-C students in the ruins zone. Kenta was standing now, face pale. The girl near the wall had both hands over her mouth. Another student stumbled backward into the mannequin debris. Ren's voice came out calm. Too calm.
"Roleplay is over" They stared at him. The facility lights flickered once. In the central plaza, the first villain laughed. Ren stepped over the yellow boundary line.
