Chương 42: Expensive
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 124 chương · ~46 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The first thing Ren Akiyama learned after becoming visible was that visibility did not make pain more organized. It made pain documented. Light struck his eyelids before he opened them. Not stadium light. Medical light. White, controlled, merciless in the way clean rooms could be merciless because they did not need cruelty to expose everything.
The smell came next: antiseptic, cold packs, warmed plastic, adhesive, the faint metallic edge of equipment, and something sharper beneath it that Ren realized after three breaths was himself. Fever-sweat. His body had become data around him. A monitor counted his pulse. A cuff hugged his right arm. Temperature patches lined his neck and ribs. His left sleeve was gone from shoulder to wrist.
His old burn scar lay exposed under a transparent dressing, red at the center, pale at the edges, with faint threadlike lines branching outward in patterns no ordinary scar had a right to make. The lines had faded since the ring. Not disappeared. Faded like something waiting under skin. His ribs hurt. Not four. Not five. Beyond useful number until he breathed shallowly and forced categories back into place. Resting pain six. Movement unknown. Breathing shallow but possible.
Left shoulder seven with movement attempt. No dizziness while lying down. Fever present. Scar heat diffuse. Hands trembling. Present orientation— Room. Medical bed. U. A. After match. Lost. Saved technician. Scar Tissue visible. Red condition active. He did not move. That was new. Or maybe he simply could not. A shadow crossed the light. Recovery Girl's face entered his field of vision like an accusation with glasses.
"You are awake" Ren tried to speak. His throat scraped. No sound. Recovery Girl held a straw to his lips.
"Small sip. If you try to turn drinking water into a heroic act, I will sedate you out of principle" He drank. Water touched his tongue, went down badly, and made his stomach remember it was attached to a body currently filing complaints from every department. He swallowed.
"Report" The word came out rough, barely useful. Recovery Girl's eyes narrowed.
"Absolutely not. I report first. You listen" That seemed illegal. She continued anyway.
"Fever. Inflammatory spike. Worsened rib strain, no displaced fracture on first scan. Left shoulder soft-tissue strain. Hand abrasion reopened. Localized frost injury risk on right foot, mild so far. Old burn scar reactivated. Multiple raised scar-lines across left arm, shoulder, lateral ribs, right palm, right foot, and parts of the back. Muscle rigidity. Tremor. Metabolic crash starting. No loss of consciousness long enough to make you less irritating" Ren processed. No displaced fracture. Good. Not good enough.
He forced the next question out.
"Technician" Recovery Girl's mouth tightened.
"Minor sprain and panic. No major injury. The camera operator is fine. Cementoss contained the ice. Todoroki is uninjured. You lost the match. You are not responsible for continuing the bracket, the stadium, or civilization" Too many answers. He closed his eyes. The relief was not clean. Relief rarely was. It came mixed with nausea, heat, shame, want, and the horrible soft thing in his chest that had heard applause and tried to keep it. Recovery Girl placed two fingers against his wrist.
"Do not make that face" Ren opened his eyes.
"What face?"
"The one where you try to decide whether this was worth it while still attached to monitors" He looked away. She clicked her tongue.
"No. Look at me" He did. Her face was severe. Not angry in the simple way. Worse.
"You made a correct priority decision in an emergency. That does not make the biological cost acceptable as a training model. That does not make the suffering noble. That does not make your body a public resource. Do you understand?" His throat hurt.
"Yes""Too fast. Again" He breathed shallowly.
"I chose correctly. The cost is still unacceptable as a model""Good" The word landed like a stamp on a bruise. She looked toward the foot of the bed.
"Kurose" Ren had not seen her. Of course she was there. Kurose stood near the monitors with a tablet hugged close to her side, formal jacket still on, hair slightly out of place in the only visible sign that the day had damaged her too. Her expression was contained enough to be dangerous. She stepped closer.
"Status as person, not case" Ren swallowed.
"Red""More""Tired. Fever. Pain high. Wanting unclear. Afraid of wanting applause. Afraid of not wanting it enough to be honest" Kurose's jaw shifted.
"Good report" He hated the phrase. Needed it. Recovery Girl looked at the monitor.
"His pulse went up when you said applause" Kurose looked at him. Ren said "It did""No analysis""I did not begin""You were about to" He was. Maybe. The door opened quietly. Hana entered first. Daichi followed half a step behind her. Ren had seen them after the match. Heard them. Felt Hana's hand near his hair and Daichi's fingers around his wrist. But that had been fever and tunnel and pain in fragments. This was worse because the room was clear now, and their faces had nowhere to hide.
Hana stopped three steps from the bed. Not because she did not want to reach him. Because Recovery Girl had likely threatened laws of physics if anyone jostled a patient. Daichi looked at the exposed scar-lines and went still. Ren could not move his left arm enough to cover them. The shame was immediate and irrational. Hana saw it. Her face changed before he could look away.
"No" Ren's throat tightened. She came closer, carefully, eyes never leaving his.
"No hiding from us""I did not""You tried inside your face" Daichi made a sound that might have been a laugh if it had not hurt. Hana reached the side of the bed. She did not touch the scar. She touched the sheet near his hand first, giving him time to refuse. He did not. Then her fingers settled lightly over the back of his right hand, above the IV line. Warm. Alive. Too much.
"You are alive" she said Ren breathed in. The monitor betrayed him.
"Yes""You reported red""Yes""You stopped when stopping became possible" His eyes burned.
"I was out of bounds""That is also stopping""It was not voluntary" Daichi moved closer on the other side.
"Take the win" Ren looked at him. Daichi's mouth trembled once. Then steadied.
"Not the match. The stopping" Ren closed his eyes. The wetness escaped anyway. One tear slid sideways toward his hairline. Awful. Hana saw. Of course. Her hand tightened by one careful degree.
"You chose the people""I heard you say that""I am saying it again" Recovery Girl muttered "Good. Repeat it hourly" Hana did not look away from Ren.
"You chose the people. Not the applause. Not the match. Not the proof. The people" Ren's voice failed twice before becoming words.
"I wanted the proof" Hana's face hurt.
"I know" That was worse than denial. Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
"I still want it""I know""The stadium clapped""I know""I hated it""I know""I needed it" Her eyes filled.
"I know" The monitor did not know what to do with that. It counted anyway. Kurose wrote something on her tablet. Ren tried to turn his head toward her. Recovery Girl said "No unnecessary movement" Ren stopped. Kurose looked up.
"I am documenting that you verbally distinguished correct emergency action from harmful reinforcement. Noting affective conflict. Noting family support. Noting that you are not to be shown replay footage without medical and psychological clearance" Ren blinked.
"No replays?" Hana's expression sharpened.
"No" Daichi said "Absolutely no" Recovery Girl said "Not while your nervous system is trying to turn itself into soup" Kurose said "The first public replay has already circulated" Ren's pulse jumped. Recovery Girl looked at the monitor.
"Akiyama" Ren forced breath back under control. Kurose continued, voice even.
"Which is why you will not watch it yet""What are they calling it?" Hana closed her eyes. Daichi looked at Kurose. Kurose's answer came too carefully.
"Many things. Most inaccurate" Ren stared at the ceiling. Painproof. Scar Boy. Unbreakable. Heroic. Stupid. Useful. He could imagine too many. Kurose stepped closer.
"Principal Nezu is preparing a statement. U. A. will not release medical details. The broadcast commentary already named it as a Quirk. That will create pressure. We are managing it" Recovery Girl snorted.
"Managing is a generous verb" Daichi asked "Can they stop the clips?" Kurose's silence answered first. Then"Not fully" Hana's hand went very still over Ren's. The room changed around the knowledge. The stadium had seen him. Now the world could replay him. Again. Again. Again. Moving inside ice. Scar-lines rising. Falling. Being carried out. The body as footage. Ren closed his eyes. The fever made darkness pulse red.
"Ren" Kurose said He opened them.
"Your body is not evidence that belongs to strangers" The sentence was very Kurose. Legal and impossible. Ren wanted to believe it. He did not yet.
"Yes" She watched him.
"Noted as aspirational understanding" Daichi said "That sounds like a grade""It is not""It sounded like a grade""It is a legal shield wearing a sentence" Hana looked at her.
"Good" Recovery Girl checked the IV.
"Enough talking. Fever is climbing" Ren's body seemed to hear permission and immediately worsened. Heat rolled under skin. Not like Todoroki's ice aftermath. Not like ordinary fever either. More textured. The scar-lines along his arm tightened, then relaxed in small waves. His left shoulder spasmed hard enough to make his breath break. Hana stood. Daichi's hand moved. Recovery Girl's voice became iron.
"Do not crowd him" They stopped. Ren bit down. Pain flared along the old burn, then down toward his wrist. The raised white lines became sharper beneath the dressing for three seconds. Kurose watched. Not coldly. Carefully. Recovery Girl snapped "Time" A nurse answered "Thirty-six seconds since visible tightening""Temperature""Thirty-eight point nine""Rising rate?"
"Slowing""Good. Cooling pack left shoulder. Not directly on scar. Adjust anti-inflammatory drip. Prepare muscle relaxant but do not push unless spasms repeat" Ren tried to breathe through it. In. The ribs refused full expansion. Out. The monitor climbed. Recovery Girl leaned over him.
"Look at me" He did.
"Not healing. Holding. That is what it did. Now it is letting go. Let it" Let go. Horrible instruction. Useful. He stopped trying to help the pain make sense. The spasm passed. The fever remained. His body shook after. Not dramatic. Small tremors. Undignified. Hana looked like she would have traded anything to take them. Daichi looked like he wanted to break something and had chosen the floor as his enemy by staring at it. Ren whispered "Sorry" Three adults reacted at once.
Hana said "No" Daichi said "Don't" Recovery Girl said "Illegal word" Kurose, quieter, said "Not accepted" Ren almost laughed. It became a cough. Recovery Girl glared.
"Do not joke internally either""I did not externally""I know your type" Shinso's voice came from the doorway.
"She does" Ren turned his eyes, not his head. Shinso stood half inside the room, posture defensive, hair worse than before, face paler than it had been after his own match. He held a vending machine drink in one hand and a paper bag in the other. The drink was unopened. The bag looked like it had been crushed and then reconsidered. Kurose looked at him.
"You were told five minutes" Shinso said "It's been four and a half""And?"
"I rounded heroically" Recovery Girl said "No one in this building rounds heroically anymore" Shinso stepped in only after Kurose nodded. He stopped at the foot of the bed. His eyes went to Ren's arm. Stayed there. The scar-lines were visible through the dressing. Shinso swallowed. Ren waited for the joke. It did not come. Instead Shinso said "That looks awful" Ren's mouth twitched.
"Accurate""Good" Hana looked between them. Daichi rubbed one hand over his face. Shinso lifted the paper bag slightly.
"Your mother sent food earlier. Then threatened me with food. Then I bought extra because apparently I'm easy to condition" Hana said "I did not threaten you" Shinso looked at her. She smiled gently. He looked away first.
"Hostage negotiator" Ren whispered "You ate?" Shinso scowled.
"You're in a medical bed and asking that?"
"Yes""Unfortunately, yes""Specific""Two rice balls. Tea. Half a protein bar that tasted like sidewalk" Daichi said "That brand does" Hana looked at him.
"You bought those""Emergency sidewalk" Ren's breath hitched with almost-laughter. Pain warned him. He stopped. Shinso's face tightened at once.
"Idiot""Yes""Don't agree when I insult you. It ruins things""Noted" Kurose watched the exchange with the faintest shift in her expression. Then her tablet buzzed. She read. Her face closed. Recovery Girl noticed.
"What?" Kurose looked at Hana and Daichi first.
"Principal Nezu requests permission to brief the family and student on immediate institutional response. Not now if medical condition worsens" Recovery Girl checked Ren's monitor.
"He gets three minutes. Remote only. If he says one interesting thing too many, I disconnect him" Kurose tapped the tablet. A moment later, Nezu appeared on the room screen. Small. Calm. Impossible to read.
"Good afternoon, Akiyama" Ren did not know what time it was. The phrase felt hostile for that reason.
"Principal" Nezu's eyes moved across the room.
"Mrs. Akiyama. Mr. Akiyama. Kurose. Recovery Girl. Shinso" Shinso looked uncomfortable being included and proud being included and furious that both were visible. Nezu continued.
"First, the technician is safe. Second, the match result stands. Todoroki Shoto advances. Third, U. A. recognizes that Akiyama Ren displayed an observed Quirk manifestation during an emergency hazard response" Ren's pulse rose. Recovery Girl looked at the monitor. Nezu's voice softened by a degree.
"We will be careful with language" Kurose said "We will be extremely careful with language""Yes" Nezu said "Extremely" Hana's hand tightened. Nezu continued.
"The public statement will not include medical speculation. It will state that Akiyama is receiving care, that no serious civilian injury occurred, and that further comment on student Quirk classification will not be made today" Daichi asked "Can you stop them from using him?" Nezu did not pretend not to understand.
"Not entirely. But we can make it more difficult for institutions to use him officially without consent" Hana's voice went sharp.
"Institutions?" Kurose answered before Nezu could.
"Media. Agencies. Commission. Schools. Analysts. Anyone who sees a child and writes a category before a person" Ren looked at the ceiling again. There it was. Being seen. Being handled. Nezu said "This is why we must establish documentation before rumor becomes structure" Recovery Girl crossed her arms.
"You are not classifying him while febrile""No" Nezu said "We are preserving observations. Classification waits until medical stability" Ren forced words through the heat.
"Provisional" All eyes turned to him. He swallowed.
"Use provisional. Conditional. Observed. Not final" Kurose's pen moved. Nezu's ears tilted slightly.
"Agreed" Recovery Girl frowned.
"Stop helping bureaucracy" Ren whispered "Defense" Kurose nodded.
"Unfortunately, yes" Nezu looked at Ren.
"The phrase Eraser Head used on broadcast has already carried weight" That was a Quirk. Ren remembered. Not as sound now. As a door. Hana said "He should not have had to prove it like that" Nezu's eyes lowered.
"No. He should not have" Silence settled. Not enough. Never enough. Nezu looked back up.
"Akiyama, I will ask one question. You may decline. Did you experience the manifestation as voluntary?" Recovery Girl said "Careful" Ren closed his eyes. Voluntary. Did he choose the lattice? No. Did he choose the priority? Yes. Did the body answer because he wanted proof? No. Because the ice was falling. Maybe because all of it. He opened his eyes.
"Trigger involuntary. Direction partially voluntary. Priority voluntary" Kurose wrote each word. Nezu nodded slowly.
"That distinction may become very important" Shinso muttered "Sounds like everything does" Nezu looked at him.
"Yes" Shinso seemed displeased to be correct. Recovery Girl reached toward the screen.
"Three minutes" Nezu said "Of course. Rest, Akiyama. You have done enough for one day" Ren almost answered. Recovery Girl disconnected before he could.
"Excellent timing" she said Ren looked at her.
"I was not going to say anything self-destructive""Your face disagreed" Shinso said "It does that" Hana turned toward Shinso.
"Sit" He blinked.
"What?"
"You look like standing is the only thing keeping you from feeling something. Sit before you fall through your own sarcasm" Shinso stared. Daichi pulled a chair slightly away from the bed, leaving enough distance to avoid crowding. Shinso looked at the chair as though it had threatened legal guardianship. Then sat.
"Hostage negotiator" he muttered Hana said "Eat the other half of the sidewalk bar""No""Later""Worse" Ren's eyes drifted closed. Voices softened around him. Not gone. Hana speaking to Recovery Girl about fever. Daichi asking Kurose about statements and whether parents could refuse interviews. Kurose saying yes, and more importantly that U. A. would refuse on their behalf. Shinso opening the vending machine drink too loudly and then freezing when the monitor changed.
Recovery Girl telling him the monitor was reacting to fever, not bottle noise. Sano's voice outside the door arguing that eliminated national symbols deserved visitation rights. Kurose saying no. Kenta saying he was not with Sano. Arai saying they were all with Sano because he had followed them. Sano saying betrayal again. The room kept existing. That was strange. Ren had expected the world to narrow after the match. Instead, it multiplied. People. Systems. Consequences. Reports. Food. Anger. Care.
He slipped under for a while. Not sleep exactly. Fever made time granular. He surfaced when a cool cloth touched his forehead. Hana. The room had dimmed. Daichi sat beside her now, elbows on knees, hands clasped. Shinso slept badly in the chair with his head tilted against the wall, arms crossed, mouth set in a frown even unconscious. Kurose was gone or outside. Recovery Girl stood near a counter reading a tablet with the expression of someone preparing to declare war on an organ system.
Ren watched Shinso for three breaths.
"He stayed" Hana looked down.
"Yes""Why?" Daichi answered quietly.
"Because he wanted to" Ren considered.
"Terrible reason""Most important ones are" Hana smoothed the cloth once.
"Your classmates came. Kenta, Sano, Arai. They could not all come in. They left messages" Ren's throat tightened.
"Did Arai""She said the crowd was loud, but the quiet room is here" Ren closed his eyes. Good.
"Sano said?" Daichi's mouth moved.
"Sano said Team No remains undefeated in emotional damage" Ren made a sound that barely avoided laughter. Pain punished less this time. Progress? Maybe not.
"Kenta?" Hana said "He said you are an idiot and he is proud and if you make him say that again he will deny it under oath" Ren opened his eyes.
"Acceptable" Hana looked at him for a long moment.
"You scared them""I know""You scared us""I know""You scared yourself?" Ren stared at the ceiling. The honest answer moved slowly.
"Yes" Daichi leaned forward.
"Good" Ren looked at him. Daichi's eyes were tired.
"Fear is not failure. Fear means some part of you still understands danger" Ren whispered "I liked when it worked" Hana's face folded around pain.
"I know""The lattice""Yes""It felt" Words failed. He tried again.
"Not good. Not painless. But clear. Like the body finally had an answer" Daichi listened without interruption. Hana's hand remained steady. Ren continued.
"I hate that" Hana said "Of course you do""I want to use it again" Daichi inhaled slowly. Ren looked at him because hiding would be worse.
"Not now. Not like that. But I want the answer again" Recovery Girl's voice came from behind them.
"And that is why you are not allowed to train it without six adults and possibly a priest" Ren closed his eyes.
"I am not religious""Neither am I. We need witnesses, not theology" Hana almost smiled. Almost. Recovery Girl came closer.
"Listen carefully. What happened in the ring was a systemic emergency activation. If you chase that state, you will damage yourself. Possibly permanently. Scar tissue can stabilize. It can also restrict, deform, harden, and trap. A body that overbuilds repair can become its own cage" Ren absorbed each word. A cage made of healing. No. Not healing. Holding. Recovery Girl continued.
"If there is a trainable part, it will be small. Local. Controlled. Boring. You will hate it because useful survival often looks boring" Ren whispered "Scar Tension" Hana looked at him. Recovery Girl's eyebrows rose.
"You already named the hypothetical safer version?"
"Before""Of course you did" Daichi asked "Safer?" Recovery Girl held up one finger.
"Hypothetically. Not safe. Safer. Very different words. A small local tension response might be trainable in controlled conditions after recovery. Grip. Bracing. Stabilization. Nothing dramatic. Nothing public. Nothing that makes commentators scream" Ren stared at his left hand. The fingers trembled. The idea was smaller than the lattice. Less beautiful. Less terrible. More useful. Maybe. Recovery Girl saw the thought.
"Do not look hopeful without permission" Ren closed his eyes.
"Understood" Hana said "No training until cleared""Yes" Daichi said "No secret testing""Yes" Shinso's voice came from the chair, eyes still closed.
"No calling it observation" Ren turned his eyes toward him.
"I thought you were asleep""I was briefly dead. Your nonsense resurrected me" Recovery Girl said "If you are awake, drink water" Shinso opened one eye.
"Why is everyone in this room medically authoritarian?" Hana said "Drink" He drank. Ren watched and felt the room steady around him. Not safe. Not simple. But steady. Later, Kurose returned with printed statements. Hana read every line. Daichi read the parts about parental consent twice. Recovery Girl crossed out three phrases and replaced them with worse ones. Nezu joined once by audio only and accepted the edits with suspicious cheer. The final statement said little. Akiyama Ren was receiving medical care.
The match result stood. A safety incident had been contained. No serious civilian injuries occurred. U. A. would not discuss a minor student's medical or Quirk classification publicly. Speculation was discouraged. The Sports Festival would continue under reviewed safety conditions. It was careful. Too careful to survive contact with the internet. But careful mattered. Careful became record. Kurose placed a copy in Hana's hand.
"This is the public version. The internal version is sealed for now. Access restricted to medical, principal, homeroom, and necessary safety staff" Ren looked at her.
"Aizawa?"
"Yes""All Might?" Kurose paused.
"Yes. Limited access, because of prior protocol and relevance to student safety" Ren nodded. That mattered. All Might needed to know. Not everything. Enough. Kurose added "He asked for an update" Ren's pulse shifted. Recovery Girl glanced at the monitor but did not interrupt. Kurose continued.
"He did not ask to visit yet. He asked whether visiting would burden you" Ren stared. A strange ache opened under the fever. All Might had learned something. Maybe.
"Later" Ren said Kurose nodded.
"I told him that would likely be the answer" Daichi looked at Ren.
"You can say no""I know""Do you?" Ren looked at him. Then nodded.
"More than before" That was true. Small. But true. Evening arrived behind blinds. The tournament continued somewhere beyond walls. Ren heard pieces when doors opened. Crowd roars. Announcer echoes. A match ending. Another beginning. The world continued without him. It bothered him less than expected. More than he wanted. At some point, Izuku came to the door. He did not enter. Ren saw him through the glass panel, green hair messy, face pale, hands intact.
All Might stood behind him in thin form, mostly hidden by angle and shadow. Izuku looked at the bed, at the monitors, at the people, then stepped back without knocking. Respect. Or fear. Or both. Ren was too tired to decide. Shinso saw too.
"He came""Yes""Didn't come in""Yes""Good" Ren looked at him. Shinso shrugged.
"You need fewer people looking directly at you" Accurate. Later. Not now. The fever peaked after sunset. Thirty-nine point three. Recovery Girl used medication then. The muscle relaxant came through the IV cold and heavy. Ren hated the loss of control. His body hated the relief less. Hana stayed. Daichi stayed. Shinso was eventually removed by Kurose under protest, then returned fifteen minutes later because Hana had given him a blanket and somehow that counted as logistical inevitability.
Kenta and Sano were banned from singing anything. Arai sent a message written in small careful letters. Quiet room exists. Ren asked Kurose to save it. She did. At night, when the room had finally become dim enough for exhaustion to matter, Ren woke from a short fever dream of ice bending into applause. He did not gasp. Progress. Maybe. He turned his head slightly because the pillow allowed it now. Hana was asleep in the chair, one hand still near the bed.
Daichi was awake, watching the monitor like he could intimidate numbers into obedience. Shinso slept with the blanket over his shoulders, chin tucked, looking younger than he would tolerate awake. Kurose stood by the window. Ren had no idea when she had returned.
"You should sleep" he whispered She turned.
"So should you""I am in bed""Your brain is not" Accurate. She came closer.
"Do you remember what you said before the match?"
"Many things""Not chasing an awakening. Not chasing a miracle. Not chasing a diagnosis on live television" Ren closed his eyes.
"I failed""No" He opened them. Kurose's face was severe.
"You did not chase it. It occurred under emergency conditions. You directed it toward hazard mitigation. Then you reported red""I wanted it""Yes""I still want to understand it""That is allowed""I want it to mean I belong" Kurose's expression changed. Small. Painful.
"That is not what proves belonging" He looked away.
"What does?" She took longer to answer.
"Not one thing. Not one match. Not one Quirk. Belonging built on a single proof can be taken away by a single failure" The sentence entered him slowly. He disliked it. Useful. Kurose continued.
"You are not transferring tonight""I know""Do you?" Ren breathed shallowly.
"Yes""Good. Because tomorrow the world will act as if something final happened. It did not. Something beginning happened. Beginnings are inconvenient and badly protected. We will protect this one anyway" His eyes burned again. The fever made everything easier to leak.
"That sounds difficult""It is""Sorry" Kurose's stare sharpened. Ren corrected.
"Thank you""Better" She turned to leave. At the door, she stopped.
"One more thing" Ren looked at her.
"You were seen today. That does not mean you are understood. Do not mistake one for the other" Then she left. The room settled. Ren lay awake in the dim medical light. Seen. Not understood. Alive. Not safe. Recognized. Not transferred. Quirk. Not answer. The scar-lines under the dressing had faded to faint raised threads, visible only because he knew where to look. His body had spoken in the ring. Now everyone else would try to translate. Doctors. Teachers. Parents. Classmates. Media. Heroes.
Villains, perhaps, though he did not let that thought stay long enough to become shape. He had wanted U. A. to look at him. Now he had to survive what looking meant. Ren closed his eyes. For once, sleep did not feel like negligence. It felt like part of the cost. So he paid it.
