Chương 50: The Hallway Begins

The hallway began with tape on the floor. Ren had expected something more dramatic. Not much more dramatic, because Recovery Girl had made it very clear that any environment containing drama within five meters of his ribs would be treated as an attack, but still. Some part of him had imagined a training room that looked like a test of worth: padded walls, observation glass, professional heroes standing with clipboards, maybe one machine quiet enough to imply expensive danger.
Instead, Gym Gamma's auxiliary assessment room contained yellow tape, gray mats, three low platforms, a table covered with harmless objects, a whiteboard, two cameras turned deliberately toward the floor rather than his face, and Kurose standing beside a folder labeled Cross-Course Evaluation Block 1. The title alone was hostile. Aizawa stood near the wall with his arms folded, scarf absent, bandages still present, and visible eye half-lidded in a way that suggested he had achieved advanced irritation at existence.
Recovery Girl stood beside the table. That meant this was not training. It was training wearing a leash. Shinso stood next to Ren, hands in his pockets, expression blank enough to qualify as active resistance. He had spent the walk from 1-C pretending not to be nervous and failing in exactly the way people failed when they believed they were succeeding. Ren had not commented. That was friendship. Probably. Kurose looked at both of them.
"Welcome to your first Cross-Course Hero Candidate Evaluation block" Shinso looked at the tape on the floor.
"This is a hallway" Kurose's eyes narrowed.
"A metaphorical hallway""No. I mean physically. You made a hallway with tape" Ren looked down. The tape formed two parallel lines across the mat, wide enough for a person to walk through but narrow enough to make every step feel intentional. Aizawa said "Observation begins" Shinso's mouth closed. Kurose wrote something. Ren looked at her pen.
"What did you write?"
"That Shinso identified the obvious under stress" Shinso stared.
"That was not stress""You objected to tape""Reasonably" Recovery Girl said "I am surrounded by future professionals" Aizawa pushed off the wall.
"Today has three goals. One, establish baseline movement under restriction. Two, establish whether Akiyama can perform low-level tasks without converting them into Quirk provocation. Three, establish whether Shinso can follow physical instructions without acting like help is an insult" Shinso said "That last one feels targeted""It is""At least you admit it""I prefer efficient cruelty" Kurose said "Pedagogy""Same hallway sometimes" Shinso muttered Ren breathed through the almost-smile. No rib pain. Good.
Recovery Girl noticed. Also good. Annoying. She pointed at Ren.
"Status""Pain two at rest. Four with deep breath. Left shoulder five with movement. Scar heat absent. Fatigue moderate. Hungry in a normal way" Hana would be proud. Daichi would ask what normal meant. Recovery Girl nodded.
"Your normal is under review, but acceptable" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"Status" Shinso blinked.
"I'm not the medical one""You competed. You were stressed. You are entering supervised training. Status" Shinso's face tightened at the word supervised. Then he looked at Kurose. Then at Ren. Then away.
"Tired. Not injured. Annoyed. Ate breakfast because apparently opportunity has calories now" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Acceptable" Shinso looked mildly horrified.
"I passed a health check?"
"Barely""Good. The universe remains stable" Kurose stepped toward the whiteboard. Written there: BASELINE BOUNDARY SECOND ANSWER Ren read the third line twice. Shinso did too. Aizawa said "You both survived the festival by making one answer visible. That answer is not enough" Ren looked at him. Aizawa continued.
"Akiyama. Scar Lattice is emergency-only. Scar Tension is untested and medically restricted. Your first answer cannot be body finds miracle under catastrophe" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Shinso. Brainwashing is powerful. It is also conditional. Your first answer cannot be opponent speaks and obeys" Shinso's jaw moved.
"Yes" Aizawa's eye narrowed.
"Try again without swallowing glass" Shinso inhaled.
"Yes""Better" Kurose tapped the board.
"Second answer does not mean abandoning your strengths. It means building what remains when your preferred condition fails" Ren wrote that inside his head. Preferred condition. Not power. Condition. Shinso had always needed a response. Ren had always needed a hazard. Both of them had mistaken condition for destiny more than once. Kurose continued.
"This block is not pass-fail. It is observation. If you attempt to turn it into a verdict, I will write that down and then make you read it aloud" Sano would have called that psychological violence. Ren privately agreed. Aizawa pointed at the taped hallway.
"Walk" Both boys looked at him. Aizawa said "Akiyama first. Normal pace. No Quirk. Stay between the lines. Stop at the far tape marker. Turn. Return" Ren stepped forward. His body catalogued the motion with excessive detail because that was what bodies did when recently betrayed by ice. You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. Right foot. Left foot. Ribs stable. Shoulder protected. Breath shallow but sufficient. No scar heat. No tension. Tape too narrow but not truly narrow.
Do not perform. Do not optimize. Do not make walking a statement. He reached the far marker. Turned. Returned. Aizawa said "Again" Ren did.
"Again" He did.
"Again" On the fourth pass, frustration rose. Not because it was hard. Because it was not. He had crossed ice in front of a stadium. Now he was walking between tape lines while adults watched whether he could refrain from being stupid. The worst part was that the adults were correct to watch. His right index finger twitched. No tension. Aizawa said "Stop" Ren stopped.
"What changed?" Ren looked at his hands.
"Frustration. Performance impulse. Finger twitch. No activation" Aizawa nodded.
"Good report" Shinso groaned.
"The word again" Recovery Girl looked at him.
"You'll live""Unconfirmed" Aizawa pointed at Shinso.
"Your turn" Shinso stepped into the taped hallway. He walked like someone trying to prove walking could be sarcastic. Aizawa said "Stop" Shinso stopped mid-step.
"What changed?"
"Apparently my walk offended you""Yes" Shinso put his foot down. Aizawa walked closer.
"You are making your body say you don't care" Shinso's expression froze. Ren looked at the floor. That had gone straight through armor. Aizawa continued.
"You do. So stop wasting movement pretending otherwise" Shinso's hands came out of his pockets. Slowly.
"Again?" he asked"Again" He walked back. Less slouch. More tension. Aizawa said "Too much. You are not marching to your execution" Shinso's shoulders stiffened.
"Do you teach everyone like this?"
"No. Some students are less annoying" Kurose said "This is not true" Aizawa ignored her.
"Again" Shinso walked. This time, his posture landed somewhere between defiance and function. Aizawa said "Better" Shinso returned to Ren's side. His face was red near the ears. Ren did not look. Friendship. Definitely. Recovery Girl moved to the table.
"Next. Object interaction. Akiyama, no Scar Tension attempts. You are moving items from one side of the table to the other. Smooth objects, textured objects, weighted objects under two kilograms. If you feel thread sensation, heat, or grip change, you stop and report. Not after finishing the task. Immediately" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Shinso, you observe" Shinso blinked.
"Observe what?"
"A patient with a self-destructive academic streak trying not to turn a cup into destiny" Ren said "That seems unfairly accurate" Shinso said "I can observe that" Ren started with a wooden block. Ordinary. Then a rubber ball. Ordinary. Then a metal cylinder. Cool. Slightly slippery. His fingertips adjusted. Ordinary. Then a smooth plastic disk. The same category as yesterday. His body remembered the ball. Or maybe he did. He lifted the disk. Halfway across the table, it slipped.
For one instant, the old need appeared. Do not let it fall. His fingertip warmed. He released the disk immediately. It hit the mat below with a small flat sound. Everyone went still. Recovery Girl said "Report""Right index heat. Thread beginning. Stopped before grip change. No pain. No spread" Kurose wrote. Aizawa looked at the disk on the floor.
"Good" Ren disliked how much that meant. Shinso leaned forward.
"You dropped it""Yes""On purpose""Yes""Because keeping it would have activated the Quirk""Possibly" Shinso looked at the disk. Then at Ren.
"That sucks" Ren looked at him. The bluntness helped.
"Yes" Recovery Girl picked up the disk.
"Again later. Not now" Ren's jaw tightened. He wanted the disk back. He wanted to prove stopping had been choice, not fear. He wanted to prove he could hold it without activation. He wanted to prove he could activate exactly one thread and stop. He wanted. Aizawa said "Name the want" Ren closed his eyes. Everyone waited. He opened them.
"I want to do it again because stopping feels like failure" Aizawa nodded.
"Good. That is why we don't" Shinso whispered "Brutal" Kurose said "Accurate" Recovery Girl put the disk away. Ren's right hand remained open on the table. No tension. No thread. A dropped disk. A successful failure. Awful phrase. Probably Kurose would like it. Aizawa turned to Shinso.
"Voice trigger drill" Shinso's expression changed. Not fear. Readiness. This was his ground. Then Aizawa ruined it.
"No Quirk activation" Shinso blinked.
"What?"
"No Brainwashing""Then what is the drill?"
"Not using it" Shinso stared. Aizawa pointed to the taped hallway.
"You will walk the line. Kurose will ask questions. You will not answer unless the question is operationally necessary. You will not bait her. You will not perform villainous menace. You will not overcorrect into silence so hard that you stop processing information" Shinso's face said this was absurd. His eyes said it was not. Kurose took a position beside the tape. Ren stepped back to observe. Recovery Girl said "Akiyama, you sit""I can stand""I know. Sit" He sat. That too was training, apparently.
Shinso entered the tape hallway. Kurose's voice became conversational.
"Shinso, did you sleep?" No answer. He walked.
"Did you eat breakfast because you were ordered or because you wanted to?" No answer. His jaw tightened.
"Do you think silence makes you safer?" His step hit the tape. Aizawa said "Reset" Shinso stopped.
"I didn't answer""Your body did" Shinso looked down. His foot had crossed the yellow line. He stepped back. Kurose watched him without cruelty.
"Again" He walked. Kurose asked "Are you angry that Akiyama's Quirk was written into a file before your transfer was approved?" The room froze. Ren looked at her. Shinso stopped walking. Aizawa did not interrupt. Shinso's face shut down. Kurose said "Operationally necessary?" Shinso's voice was tight.
"No""Then continue" He walked. One step. Two. His foot stayed inside the tape. Kurose asked "Are you relieved there was no one seat?" Shinso's shoulders rose. He did not answer. Kept walking. Reached the far marker. Turned. Kurose asked "Are you afraid that if Aizawa trains you and you still fail, you will have no one left to blame?" Shinso's foot hit the line. Not over. On. Aizawa said "Hold" Shinso held. His hands curled. Ren felt the urge to speak. Do not. This was not rescue. This was not falling ice.
Shinso breathed through his nose. Then moved his foot back inside the line. He continued. Kurose said "Good" Shinso's laugh came out sharp.
"I hate this" Aizawa said "You answered" Shinso stopped.
"Damn it" Kurose wrote. Aizawa said "Again later. Not now" Shinso looked at him.
"Because I want to prove I can do it?"
"Yes" Shinso looked furious. Then, slowly, he looked at the plastic disk on the table. Then at Ren. Ren lifted one eyebrow. Shinso said "I hate parallels" Ren whispered "Same hallway""Shut up" Aizawa pointed at the mat.
"Both of you. Sit" They sat on opposite sides of the taped hallway. Kurose stood at the whiteboard. Recovery Girl checked Ren's monitor remotely and then allowed him to remain on the mat, which felt like a minor treaty. Aizawa picked up a marker and wrote: STOPPING IS DATA Ren stared at it. Shinso stared too. Aizawa said "You both think continuation proves more than stopping. It doesn't.
Continuing under bad conditions often proves the conditions were bad and you ignored them" Recovery Girl muttered "Frame that" Aizawa continued.
"Akiyama dropped the disk. That gives us information about threshold. Shinso stepped on the line and did not answer. That gives us information about emotional bait and physical leakage. Both are useful. Neither is a failure unless you repeat it without learning" Kurose added "This is why the evaluation track exists. Not to reward spectacle. To create controlled evidence" Ren looked at the words. Stopping is data. He wrote it in his notebook later. He knew he would. Shinso said "What if stopping looks weak?"
Aizawa looked at him.
"To who?" Shinso's mouth closed. Aizawa waited. Shinso said "Everyone""Too vague""People watching""Which people?" Shinso looked down.
"The ones waiting for my Quirk to be wrong" Aizawa's voice did not soften.
"Then make them wait while you build a second answer" Shinso's hands went still. Aizawa turned to Ren.
"What if dropping the disk looks weak?" Ren said "It did""To who?" Ren looked at the floor.
"Myself""Too vague" Ren almost smiled. Then did not.
"The part of me that thinks useful means completing the task regardless of cost""Make that part wait" Ren breathed.
"Yes" The room settled. Not comfortably. Productively. That was probably worse. The next hour contained more small humiliations. Ren walked the tape hallway while holding a half-full cup of water and was told that spilling before Scar Tension began was success. Shinso practiced catching a soft cloth thrown badly toward his left side and discovered he turned his head before moving his feet. Ren practiced placing a palm near a textured block without gripping it.
Shinso practiced answering only operational questions and failed twice when Kurose used his first name unexpectedly. Ren sat through five minutes of guided breathing without correcting the pacing. Shinso learned that Aizawa considered sarcasm a resource and, like all resources, poorly managed under fatigue. No one did anything that would make a festival highlight reel. By the end, both boys looked as if they had lost an argument with themselves. Kurose seemed satisfied.
Recovery Girl seemed less murderous than usual. Aizawa looked exactly the same, which Ren interpreted as either approval or organ failure. At the end, Kurose distributed reflection sheets. Shinso stared at his.
"No""Yes" Kurose said"I already suffered""And now you will metabolize it into language""That sounds illegal""It is education""Same hallway sometimes" Ren said Shinso turned.
"Betrayal" Ren took his sheet. The first prompt read: When did you want to continue after a stop condition appeared? Ren stared at it. Rude. Useful. The second prompt read: What did stopping protect? Worse. The third: What second answer became visible today? Ren did not write immediately. Shinso did not either. Aizawa leaned against the wall, silent now. Recovery Girl packed the harmless objects with the satisfaction of someone storing weapons. Kurose waited.
Ren wrote: I wanted to continue after dropping the plastic disk. Stopping protected the difference between observation and performance. The second answer was release. He looked at the sentence. Release. Not grip. That was annoying. Correct. Beside him, Shinso wrote with aggressive pressure. Ren did not look. Then Shinso shoved the paper sideways. Not all the way. Enough. Ren saw: I wanted to answer when Kurose made it personal. Stopping protected my Quirk from becoming my temper. The second answer was walking.
Ren looked at Shinso. Shinso looked at the ceiling.
"If you say anything, I will deny literacy" Ren said "Good report" Shinso turned slowly. Ren kept his face neutral. Aizawa said "He deserved that" Shinso looked betrayed by adults, peers, and language. Kurose collected the sheets before retaliation could occur.
"Evaluation Block 1 complete" Sano would have applauded. No one here did. Good. Ren stood carefully. His ribs held. His left shoulder complained. His right index finger remained ordinary. Aizawa stepped beside him as the others began packing.
"You did not get what you wanted today" Ren looked at the table where the plastic disk had been put away.
"No""Good" Ren looked at him. Aizawa continued.
"If every session gives you what you want, the adults are failing""Encouraging""No. Accurate" Ren watched Shinso argue with Kurose about whether reflection sheets counted as emotional homework or tactical documentation.
"Aizawa-sensei" Aizawa's eye moved to him.
"Thank you for training Shinso""Not training yet""For the future inconvenience" Aizawa looked at Shinso.
"He has potential""Yes""He also has an attitude problem" Ren looked back at him.
"That seems survivable at U. A." Aizawa's mouth twitched.
"Unfortunately" Ren hesitated. Then asked "Do I?"
"Have potential?"
"Yes" Aizawa did not answer quickly. That helped.
"Yes" Ren swallowed. Aizawa continued.
"But potential is not a moral quality. It is a workload" Ren closed his eyes briefly.
"Of course it is""You wanted honesty""I did""You still do?" Ren opened his eyes.
"Yes" Aizawa nodded.
"Good" There it was again. The word had become less clean and more necessary with each repetition. They left Gym Gamma together, though not like a team. Not yet. Kurose walked ahead with the folders. Recovery Girl walked beside Ren long enough to remind him that he was not to touch plastic disks, rubber balls, smooth pens, wet trays, textured walls, or philosophical metaphors without supervision.
Aizawa walked behind Shinso and corrected his posture once without touching him, which somehow annoyed Shinso more than a physical shove would have. The corridor outside Gym Gamma caught the late sun. Students moved between buildings. The festival banners were gone now. The walls looked ordinary again. That seemed rude too. Ren slowed near the window. Shinso slowed with him. Below, a support student carried a box of broken bracket signage. Someone had discarded a strip reading FINAL near the maintenance door.
It looked much smaller off the stadium screen. Shinso said "Today was awful" Ren nodded.
"Yes""Useful""Yes""I hate that combination""Yes" They stood there for a moment. Then Shinso said "Release" Ren looked at him. Shinso was still facing the window.
"Your second answer" Ren looked down at his right hand.
"Yes" Shinso's mouth tightened.
"Walking""Yes""Stupid""Very""Probably important""Unfortunately" They did not smile. Almost. Enough. Kurose called from ahead.
"Both of you. Process while walking" Shinso muttered "She keeps saying that" Ren started moving. The hallway stretched in front of them. Not metaphorical. Not only. Tape would come later. Forms would come later. Medical checks, food logs, agency filters, Aizawa's future inconvenience, Recovery Girl's prohibited object list, Kurose's legal shields, Nezu's locked doors, All Might's careful note, Izuku's broken fingers, Todoroki's small fire, Endeavor's inquiry waiting behind delay. All of it waited.
The door had not opened. The wall was not gone. But there was a hallway now. Ren walked it slowly. Shinso walked beside him. For today, no one asked them to run.
